In the newest edition of
Dear Me: A Letter To My Sixteen-Year-Old Self, edited by Joseph Galliano, a rather special someone wrote the foreward - that being the author of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling herself. Jo, as always, has a poignant and funny way of voicing her opinion, and in the instance of lending her voice as the introduction to the book offers the readers a bit of advice: "Be yourself. Be easier on yourself." She, and so many other celebrities ruminated and offered a great deal of warning and advice to their teenage selves, though some, like Alan Rickman, kept it short and concise and merely said to live life as it were.
Jo also wrote a letter to her 16-year-old self in addition to the foreward, listing a few bits of advice and what to wear and do at such a young and impressionable age. She, like so many other celebrities who lent their voices and advice, did offer a bit of caution, but at the same time insisted that the best way to learn from your mistakes was to actually have them. How else would one learn if they didn't try for a bit of trial and error? No one is perfect, and surely not at 16 years old.
Many of the adults who discussed their pasts did so in a reflective way rather than to scare off younger fans and readers. If anything, learn from their mistakes, and know that it is possible to make a few yourself and to not only move past them, but possibly achieve greatness (case in point: Jo).
The book offers dozens of heartfelt pieces of advice from those admired by millions, without the peppering of a publicist to make sure it sounds as though the celebrity in question is without flaws. Everyone has flaws at 16, or at any age, which the book itself does show. With that, the celebrities say simply to be yourself, and live life, from J.K. Rowling and so many others.
