Default Review: 'Bookworms United' with Jessie Cave

by Milo

Bookworms United gathered again on Saturday evening at the Soho Theatre in London, for what would be the first of two sell-out weekends, following a successful stint at the Edinburgh Fringe. Jessie Cave plays host to this fictitious book club, and from the moment she emerged from behind the curtain, I was grinning like a cheshire cat. Such is the effect that Jessie has with her booming persona. She immediately immerses the audience into her 'Pindippy' world, with a barrage of fast paced dialogue and quirky pop humour. The character that Jessie plays is somewhat of a slightly more eccentric caricature of herself. She gives us a brief fast paced run down of how she came to play Lavender Brown in Harry Potter and how novels like Narnia started her crazy obsession of being a bookworm. Indeed the show features many references to random books that are placed around the stage area like props, which she uses to comic effect. The show however is not a one-girl show, and features the ever so angelic and sweet-looking Bebe Cave, Jessie's younger sister, whom she has seemingly forced to play her assistant.

The two have great chemistry together and Bebe's involvement add's another dimension to the quirky fun that is Bookworms United. You could even say she is the protagonist in the show, as we are left 'awwwing' her after Jessie constantly refuses her request to perform a Hunger Games segment.

All in all, Jessie and Bebe are fantastic, energetic and thoroughly entertaining, and you don't even need to be a bookworm for them to make you laugh. It is an hour of warm fun entertainment, and you can certainly see big things on the horizon for these two.

Editor’s Note: Jessie Cave: Bookworm has been extended due to popular demand. Tickets are now available for 21 & 22 June. You can book them here.
