Default Review: "A Young Doctor’s Notebook" on DVD

‘A Young Doctor’s Notebook’ is a new four-part comedy drama based on a collection of short stories by the celebrated Russian writer and playwright Mikhail Bulgakov. It stars Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe as both the older and younger versions of a doctor working during the Russian Revolution.

Set against the backdrop of a bleak time in Russian history, Hamm’s older doctor is recounting from his notes and thus appears in his memories of his younger self as a doctor, and so this allows for both Hamm and Radcliffe to interact on screen, mostly to comic effect.

Despite the seriousness of the situations that the Doctor both young and old, finds himself in, both of them manage to make it funny so you are not constantly cringing at the gore. Some may find it too hard to take as it can get very bloody, but it’s well worth a watch if you can stomach it. Radcliffe and Hamm complement each other onscreen; they are at opposite ends of the spectrum but the chemistry is obvious, and makes this programme all the more enjoyable.

Radcliffe seems to be finding his niche. He can play serious and comedic parts, and that’s something that seems to merge in ‘A Young Doctor’s Notebook’ - ideal casting if I say so, and he seems to work even better with a well established actor like Hamm to play off.

‘A Young Doctor’s Notebook’ combines drama, comedy and occasional scenes of blood and gore, but they all work together in a way that can be possibly described as dark comedy. The episodes run at about twenty-two minutes making them very easy to watch, and all in all they are well worth the watch, and I for one can’t wait to see Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe working together again.
Preorder A Young Doctor’s Notebook, available on January 7, 2013, today.
