The Question Thread

The Question Thread

You have questions? We have answers! Please ask SITE and RULE related questions here! This thread is here to help you with the site; not your life, not Harry Potter, or anything else. This is the main site-wide thread in which newbies and members can ask questions about SS. When your question is answered by a site moderator, your original post will be deleted.

Before you ask a question in this thread, please be sure you've checked the The SS Board Rules and FAQ and checked the relevant threads in the site resources to see if your question has already been addressed. The topics most frequently asked about are linked below under the spoiler tags. If you have issues with advertisements, or you need some technical problems please go to the Technical Support and Advertising Issues thread, found in the Site Resources forum. If you do post here in error when it is a tech issue or advertisement problem, the post will be moved to that thread and any answers will be given there.

Please also give this thread a quick browse before asking your question to see if has already been answered in the most recent pages!

Please refrain from answering questions if you are not a member of the SnitchSeeker Staff Team That means only mods and admins should be giving answers here.
Members are not permitted to answer questions in this thread. It's not that we mind you helping; quite the opposite is true actually. It's more that mods are trained to know the up-to-date answers, the whole answers, and have the ability to check things not everyone is able. If you see us slacking on answering (it happens, we know) that you absolutely know you can help the members with: by all means, VM them and be your wonderfully helpfully self. The mods would appreciate it, the member would appreciate it, and that is what SS is all about anyway: community.

Site Resources & Site Rules Quick Links:
Below you will find links to the different guides here in this forum designed to help members and answer common questions. We encourage all newbies and members to check the site rules & FAQ (where you can do a keyword search) and the site resources (where there are guides and FAQs on several important topics) before asking a question as you are likely to find the answer you need on your own without having to wait for a response. If you do not check these places first you'll likely find that you'll be directed to these resources anyway when your question is addressed.

Quizzes and Questionnaires
SPOILER!!: About Quizzes and Questionnaires on SS

Snitchseeker has several different Question forms which are to be filled out for a variety of purposes. The most notable ones are:
  • The Sorting Quiz
  • The re-Sorting
  • The Ministry Placement
  • The Wand Quiz
  • The Owl Post
  • The Vault Application
  • The Daily Prophet News Submissions
  • Username Change request

There are also often questionnaires that are opened for events on site, or for specific member groups as per the needs of various sections of SS. Some of these are only open seasonally, but they all work the same way. Your submitted answers generate a thread in a holding forum that won't be visible to you. This means that you can't double check your submission after you hit that 'submit' button. We highly recommend saving/backing up what you write in a word document or similar, in case there is a problem submitting your questionnaire.

When your questionnaire submits you will see a confirmation on screen. If you do not see this confirmation, your internet connection or browser may have glitched, or we may be experiencing server issues. You can always ask an admin or moderator of that particular area of SS to check and see if your questionnaire submitted correctly, or if you did not see the confirmation, you can submit again with the information you saved.

If you have questions specific to your own fan-fiction thread please ask them in the Fan-fiction announcements, questions, and requests thread, where a FF moderator can help you directly.

Most other forums (games, graphic making, discussions etc) have a sticky thread with guidelines and information specific to that forum.

We've had a book club in the past, and had read-alongs when we had our own radio, but currently there is no active reading groups - if there's a demand something might happen though. In the meantime you can discuss non-HP books here or the HP books here

Unfortunately not at this time. However it can sometimes be easier to use 'SS Lite' which you can set as the skin from the drop down in the bottom left hand corner. You'll need to experiment with this to figure out if its right for you or not.

I would like to ask if I am able to promote and/or sell my wands on this forum? I have scoured the rules, and cannot find anything saying I cannot, but I would like to be sure.

The answer will not affect my decision to stay at all. It would just be the cream on the butterbeer if I could. Thanks!

Yes and no. We don't exactly allow advertising in an active way, but you're permitted to put links in your signature. As per the advertising section in the rules:

Quote:

If you wish to advertise another website, you may only do so through links in your signature or by making use of the 'homepage' field provided in your profile. Websites promoted in this manner must not contain any material which directly violates SnitchSeeker site rules, or a warning may be issued for linked content.
Posting advertisements in threads is not permitted, nor is the harassment of our members. You may not actively advertise via Social Group discussions, Private Messages, Usernotes or Visitor Messages. A link may be given if requested, or for reference purposes, but if it is deemed advertising by site staff a warning or infraction will be issued.
We do also have an arts and crafts forum, though its not super active right now, here, where you can showcase your work. In the long term once you're more settled you could have a chat to the admin team and we could see what other options there might be. Welcome to SS!

Looking forward for positive responding..

Can you elaborate more on your issue? You need to graduate from newbie with ten legitimate posts in order to post in our graphics forum. Beyond that it is not clear what your issue currently is.

Hi and welcome!

Yes, as we are currently in between school terms, you can RP any school character in Diagon Alley, even if you are not yet officially sorted. Once the school term is in session however, you may not play school aged characters there, but you can RP anyone else of other ages in DA.

Hello and welcome!

Our next school sorting will occur from August 12-31. Keep your eye out for a site notice at that time and there will be a link to a questionnaire that you can take to be sorted as long as you have ten legitimate posts.

As stated in the Newbie Process thread:
Quote:

The ten post rule is in place in order to keep the SS community safe for all members and to be sure that everyone who joins in the fun knows our rules. Having a ten post minimum means we can stop spammers and advertisers before they become a problem, and be sure that new members are welcomed into the community and any questions can be addressed quickly and easily.
And it's very easy to make those ten legitimate posts, so members are able to join in the fun quickly. It seems you have your ten posts now, so you should be able to fully take advantage of our site.

Do you mean in the RPG section of the site? It depends on what you mean by "anything happen"... Surely you can post muggle-born characters there but there are also plenty of dark characters played there, so it's considered enter at your own risk.

Yes! The Sorting is only applicable to the Hogwarts RPG. Diagon Alley is a free space for all RPG characters. If you have more specific questions regarding the RPG areas of site, make sure you take a peek at this post as well as the applicable threads in the Site Resources forum :pea:

Hi there!

If you have followed all the thread submission rules listed in the respective guidelines for the subforum you’re trying to post a thread in, then your thread will be approved as soon as possible (and if you didn’t, someone from the mod team will contact you). The “as soon as possible” is probably our biggest enemy at the moment, considering the state of the world right now. If you feel like you’ve been waiting for your thread to be approved for more than a couple of days/a week, we apologize. Please feel free to PM the mods responsible for the respective subforum then, asking if you did anything wrong with your submission or if the reason the thread hasn’t been approved lies with them.

So in conclusion, no, you don’t need to do anything other than follow the rules and guidelines, then your thread should be approved soon.

Hi! You can read more about it here but, essentially, those are positions are offered to members by the Hogwarts RPG Admin (as well as Heads of Houses and Flying Instructor in some cases) based on a number of factors. For example, participation/activity level in the Hogwarts RPG. I hope this helps. ^_^

I want to use the actress Joey King from Ramona & Beezus as my character and start her out as a first year. I have an idea of what sort of character she will start out as and I will fill that all out in my profile tomorrow so that isn't the issue. I want to know once that is all completed where and how do I introduce her as a new character and start role playing her with other characters? Thank You in advance for any help. ~Elise (S.P.E.W. Hello and welcome! We are very excited to have you join SnitchSeeker's RPG community!

Our Site Resources forum has a few threads of interest, specifically this one with some role playing basics for you to dip your toes into.

The school term has already begun and this means that only members who completed the Hogwarts Sorting are eligible to RP in the Hogwarts forums, so to introduce her officially you will need to wait until the next Sorting period. You can read more about the Sorting process here.

However, younger characters and adult characters (all of those who are not of school attending, first through seventh year age) are welcome to make appearances in both the Diagon Alley and Ministry of Magic RPG areas at any time. The Ministry of Magic RPG placement is currently underway and you are more than welcome to make an adult character at this time for that if you wish. You can read more about Ministry placement over here and be sure to check out the latest site notices for the Placement announcement.

You are also encouraged to check out the St. Mungo's RP forum where any and all characters are welcomed to be played at any time!

Newbies can't add signatures. You need to go through the Newbie Forum in order to become a full member, and then you'll be able to explore the rest of SS and have a signature. All you need to know about that process is in a sticky thread in that forum :)

We don't allow selling onsite. You'll have to go somewhere else to do that.

Hello, welcome to SS! ^_^

You can view the Harry Potter News forum for latest news about show tickets on sale. Please note that these news threads only direct you to official websites, as SnitchSeeker is not a platform for members to sell goods or services.

Hello and welcome to SnitchSeeker. You can find all the information you need regarding signature sizes and regulations right over here in the Gladrags forum.

For sizes specifically, I've copied and pasted the most relevant information. Be sure to read the thread in full for a thorough understanding of how signatures work here on SS.
Quote:

  • No bigger than 450 pixels in width
  • No bigger than 200 pixels in height
  • No heavier than 60kb (61,444 bytes). If you’re using multiple images in one siggy, the kbs of ALL the images together cannot exceed 60kb (61,444 bytes). For one big image, the weight requirement of the image stands the same
  • You can have up to THREE separate images that, together, form one siggy
  • If you want to use smilies, the maximum number of smilies you can use is 6. They don’t count as file size/weight but they do count towards the height of your siggy
  • Blank spaces/lines in between or before images/text do add up to your total pixel height. Their exact value is the same as the size of the text/code used to format your siggy (look below for more info)

Thank you in advance.

Hello and welcome back! It is a perfect time to jump back into the RPG as it is in-character summer and almost the beginning of a new school term. I would not recommend continuing with your previous character for the very reasons you described, but you are absolutely allowed to create a new character. That character would likely have to be in the same house you were originally sorted in if you are not eligible for resorting, but anything else would be up to you. And once you have that figured out, feel free to RP them in the Diagon Alley RPG forum until the school opens for the new term.

Hello there, it's me again. I am here with a list of questions this time, in the order of importance. Due to IRL reasons, I am able to create my new character now so I have posted on the wand fitting forum as fast as I can since I believe that is the bare minimum I have to do.

1) Is the Hogwarts biography forum a must or just for character building?
2) A part of my background is a family history in the UK which I am claiming again. So I was planning to have an "OLD VAULT" opened in Gringotts but am I too late for that?
3) Another part of my background is a house elf I grew up with after my parents' death. Can I include him in my RP?
4) I was wondering if I could play a legilimens or a parselmouth. If I could, what do I have to do and what would be the limits of these abilities, especially of legilimency?
5) Do I have to RP purchasing my books (due to time constraints)? Also, if I can be a parselmouth can I have a snake as my familiar, thus the pet I am taking to Hogwarts?

Once again, thanks so much in advance.

Hello there! Before I dive into all of these, please keep in mind that outside of maintaining and respecting the Snitchseeker.com rules and guidelines (as well as each RPG forum's respective rules), there is nothing that you must do for or in the RPG - everything it meant to enrich your experience.

1. Utilizing the biography threads is not a mandatory task, but it is encouraged. People love to read biographies about other characters and it helps enrich the lore here on Snitchseeker. It is also a good way for you to keep track of character details.

2. I am not sure what you mean by 'old vault' exactly, but the Gringotts vault application is open year round without a time limit. You can read more about the process over here.

3. You may include references to your character's house elf all you wish and even RP him if the situation suits. You cannot, however, RP them in the School RPG forum without explicit permission from the Hogwarts RPG Admin but other RPG areas would be okay.

4. These character traits fall under the category of 'special characters' (please read more about there here in the FAQ) and require explicit permission from the Hogwarts RPG admin to be played in the school RPG.

5. Again, nothing is absolutely mandatory and you can assume your character has completed their shopping just fine ^_^ as for pets, anything other than an owl, cat, rat, toad, or pygmy puff must receive permission from the Hogwarts RPG admin and Care of Magical Creatures professor. Please see this part of the site FAQ for full details.

As stated above, these things are not mandatory and instead are additional services we provide to enrich your RPG experience here on site. Please see the Gringotts information post linked above for full details. These are all little details that you can utilize however you see fit to your character as well as create RPG opportunities between yourself and other members who have employees at Gringotts and any other shop where currency is used

Like is it allowed for my character to post, say, in the Gryffindor table thread?

Good question! As a general rule of thumb, if you cannot find any explicit instructions discouraging you from posting your character in the thread descriptions or guidelines of a particular RPG forum then it is likely safe to say that you are free to post at your leisure ^_^ An example of this can be seen in the Atlantis RPG area FAQ or any of the threads in the St. Mungo's RPG forum. In terms of the feast, you are welcome to have your character venture elsewhere, though some would advise that you keep one clone (one appearance of your character) out and about at one time. This means only posting at one table, then RP them leaving, then to the next table. This is not a site rule, but simply a suggestion ^_^

If you have questions for a specific area, it is a good idea to contact the RPG admin for that area or one of the existing leaders (Hogwarts staff, Ministry department head, Diagon Alley Proprietor, site mod) and they will be glad to point you in the right direction!

Hi there!

I'd say the best place to talk about HP Lego would be under Diagon Alley (Potterdom) in Leaky Cauldron (General). Be sure to read the guidelines and you can create your own thread about HP Legos. It will not appear to you right away as the moderators of the forum need to approve the thread before it can be published. Give them some time to do that and then you can start discussing!

I am going to remove the question that you posted there as this is the place for that here, but you are welcome to post a new thread for discussing your topic there.
