Default Charms Lesson: Gripping Charm (Queritorto)

Today's charms lesson has been planned for the grounds today. Fortunately the time is in the afternoon so hopefully if you forgot and headed to the third floor - when you were greeted with a locked classroom door and a reminder note - you still had enough time to head to the grounds.

There are no chairs waiting for near the edge of the grounds, but wooden benches have been arranged if you need to sit. Although don't get too comfortable because you won't be sitting long. Professor Mancini is standing in the middle of the circled benches, juggling a small kickball (12.7cm size), as she awaits your arrival.

ooc: note that this is NOT your first charms lesson of the term, so your characters should be familiar with Mancini by now (and vice versa). Also, your students would have been instructed to wear comfortable clothes prior to today's lesson. We'll start in about 24 hours from now....

Lesson Progression
* Question ONE: What do you know about the gripping charm? Can be anything from uses to who/when it was invented.
* Mini activity: Incantation/wand movement practice!!
* Main Activity: Climbing trees and egg hunt!
numbers found already: 4, 38, 294, 174, 331

Since Charms was going to be outside today, Adam had taken it upon himself to dress for the weather and was wearing a few more layers of clothing than normal. Just to be safe. He could always take off an extra sweater if need be! It WAS November after all. He grinned at Mancini as he walked in. "Hello Professor!" he greeted her as he eyed the kickball she was currently juggling.

The instruction to wear comfy clothes had presented Al with a lot of ~options~. But ultimately, he had decided to go with the safest one of a green pullover hoodie over a plain white shirt and matching track pants and running shoes. After all, the comfy clothes instruction usually meant an active lesson and he wasn't going to be that idiot. You know, the one that had chosen style over comfort and ended up running in jeans, or shoes that seemed to be athletic but really weren't.

Walking into the circle of benches, he found that his instincts with the clothes were seemingly correct if the kickball was anything to go by. Which, what did kickball have to do with Charms? Anyway, Al flopped dramatically onto an empty bench in a lying position, heaving a dramatic sigh for effect. Was anything wrong? Not particularly, just Alfred being Alfred.

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

Ig had definitely been one of those who'd gone up to the Charms classroom. How was he supposed to keep track of all of these changes to things?!

And by 'all these changes' he literally meant this one. This was the only change in his timetable this week and he'd still managed to forget about it. Not to worry, though, because he'd chosen Converse this morning, instead of his usual school shoes, and pulling his tie off basically made his uniform sort of comfortable. He was stuffing it into his pocket as he jogged down to the gathering place, and offered the Professor a wave before taking a seat.

Because he was having one of his better days today, Jude offered the woman a small smile.

“Good afternoon, professor." It still wasn't his usual enthusiastic greeting but it was still a polite one. Selecting one of the benches at random, he planted himself on it to wait for things to get started.
The interesting thing about holding a lesson in a different location from normal was gauging how student's interests changed. Although if it was one thing that Leanne knew it was that Hufflepuffs were generally happy to go along with whatever, wherever. "Good afternoon, Jude, welcome" She continued still juggle the ball, waiting for more arrivals.

His eagerness seemed to indicate that he was early, Phoenix noticed, as he was one of the first students to arrive. "Hello, Professor," he greeted Mancini politely, noting the ball in her hands before looking for a place to sit. "Hi," he greeted the older boy already sat there, then took a seat a couple spots away.
To be honest the classes other than the respective classrooms was new to her as well, but here she was, trying new things!!! She did take note of the politeness of this first year, acknowledging him with a "Hello, Phoenix"

Perhaps when she specified comfortable clothing, she should have said athletic wear. Though she supposed teenagers these days could make athletic wear cute? Fortunately it wasn't too intense of activities planned for today.

"Valentina," She acknowledged.

Dressed appropriately for the weather, hair plaited for practicality, and her trusty pair of charmed gloves in her pocket (just in case), Margaret headed outside.

As she approached the circle of benches, Margaret spotted first Val, to whom she gave a little wave, and Jude, who got a smile, and some little first year, who also got a wave. "Good afternoon, professor!" she said brightly, noticing the ball. "Are we playing a game today?" she asked. If so, this class was going to be even better than she'd expected (and she always expected good things in charms).
Margaret was definitely one of the students that Leanne expected to be excited for today's outdoor lessons, so she was the least bit surprised to see her enthusiasm. She chuckled at her question. "A game, of sorts, yes. You can say that."

Of course, the notice had said 'comfortable clothes,' but seeing as the opportunities to dress out of uniform were so few and far between, Kins never took these moments for granted. Which meant that she would prioritize style over comfort if it ever came down to it. But, fortunately, she knew how to expertly do both at once. And so, she made her way down to the grounds wearing a comfortable pair of worn-out, high-waisted jeans, a lavender strappy top with a white, long-sleeved button down (which she left unbuttoned and half tucked) over it, and her favorite pair of chunky, white trainers. Comfortable and cute. Get you a girl who can do it both!

Except ... Her eyes widened a bit when she saw the ball in her professor's hands. "... Are we running today, Professor?" Because. Because if they were, that's really something that ought to be written on the notice too. Denim wasn't super ideal for a run. But Kinsay would make it work if she had to. She was nothing if not committed to the fit. So.

That concern aside, she went to sit next to Val.
Note to self: definitely specify athletic wear when specifying comfortable clothes. At least Kinsay was technically wearing trainers which would sufficient enough for today's lesson. "Not running," She looked the girl up and down. "I think you should be okay." Just hopefully she didn't mind if the denim got dirty, but it was nothing a good cleaning spell couldn't fix and fortunately even if Kinsay was not proficient in, Leanne happened to excel in such charms good thing she was the professor, amiright?

The Gryffindor had dressed comfortably, as had been instructed. She wore black training pants with a red shirt (with a little unicorn on the bottom hem) and a grey vest that was charmed to keep her warm. She did, however, regret sporting her white sneakers now that she was out here.

"Hi there, Professor Mancini!" she waved energetically with both hands before reaching for the back of her head to tighten the ribbon in her hair. The darn thing kept sliding down her ponytail, but she refused to remove it!
Perhaps Kinsay and Val should have taken a page from their dormmate's fashion trends. "Hi there, Trissa. Welcome! Need some help tightening the ribbon?" She offered, because sometimes it was definitely easier to have someone else do these things.

Braids were TRENDING!!! Which Leanne supposed was a good thing because it kept the hair tidy and out of the face. "Hello Ash, welcome." Yes, they should get some good exercise. And hopefully learn a little something in the process. But as she was talking Margaret, Leanne kept those thoughts to herself.

"Hello Caes," She greeted simply enough of the older Slytherin boy.

With a few minutes to spare and his owl perched on his shoulder, Enzo approached the forming group at a leisurely pace, observing who was already there, and who he'd sit next to.. or stand. Nearing the closest student, Enzo turned to his owl, and gestured for it to fly to the nearest tree-- didn't want the professor to be telling him off now, yes?

And so, with his trusty companion eyeing the whole thing from its perch way above them, the second year Slytherin finally joined the circle, giving their teacher a quick and quiet greeting as he passed her by. "Professor, hello." the ball she was juggling was noted as well, promptly reminding him of his older brother across the pond living his best life. With a sigh, Enzo picked an empty spot at one of the back benches, and scanned the trees around, wondering what they will have for dinner that evening.
Yes, Leanne would have definitely told Enzo off for the owl, so good thinking on his part to gesture for it to fly off. Even though this lesson was being held outdoors, that didn't give them reason to bring their pets. Although it did give her the idea for future lessons to possibly include one with pets.

"Hello Enzo."

Were they going to be playing a sport today? He was athletic enough, but perhaps not mentally prepared for that kind of thing. Group sports could get a little intense. Also loud, so…yeah. He guessed he’d just wait and see and try to go with the flow.
That was the intent to give a change in space. Plus they needed the height clearance that the traditional classroom didn't allow for. "Hi Luca, welcome." Also, he shouldn't fret because hopefully today's lesson would be lowkey enough that people of all athletic abilities could feel comfortable participating.

“Hi Professor!,” she greeted the woman brightly, glancing around to see who had arrived before her. Hence who she could glom onto while they waited for the lesson to start. Lots of older kids, not that it bothered her. No twins or Logan that she could see yet, but… oh hey there’s Enzo and his owl.

The smol blonde bounced her way over to the Slytherin, skidding to a stop even as her eyes followed the owl’s flightpath to the tree. “We can bring pets to lessons?” Not that she had hers even at the castle to bring even if they were allowed.
"Hi Sable, welcome," She grinned, appreciating the small blonde's pep to her step. She didn't give Enzo a chance to answer Sable's question, interjecting it with an answer, "Not officially, unless specified, but technically he didn't bring the pet to the lesson." Smart of him.

She was just glad she’d been practicing cleaning charms since last year, so hopefully if she did get dirty, she wouldn’t stay that way for long!

As per the directions, she arrived wearing jeans, glittery pink trainers, and a very princessy pink sweater with a tiara on the front, which matched her hair clip. A waterproof (and hopefully mud-proof!) pink jacket completed the outfit. Slowing as she approached, she noticed the kickball. Was that what they were doing today? No thanks! She always hated kickball in muggle gym class! Or maybe…

She watched, mildly intrigued, as Professor Mancini juggled the ball. Maybe they were going to learn to juggle instead. Was there a juggling charm she didn’t know about? Now that would be cool! “Hello, Professor!” she greeted the woman with a bright smile and a small wave. She took a seat on the nearest bench, eagerly waiting for the lesson to begin.
Another wearing jeans, which was the child of a former charms professor. For some reason teaching her always made Leanne nervous because she felt like Desiree might have been comparing herself to her father. Which was a ridiculous notion since Leanne knew that every teacher had their own styles and even if she was being compared, what difference would that make?

"Hello Desiree." Was the tiara a bit extra? Perhaps, but she would let the Hufflepuff decide if she wanted to remove it once the activity began.

That was actually the BEST news, because who didn't prefer being outdoors?!

Another few skips and Professor Panini Mancini and all her classmates came into view. She kept her skips going, until she was close enough to jump in front of her Professor and give a bright smile. "Hi Professor M!" Now where to stand? The obvious answer was Sia but she was standing next to a boy V didn't know so... She'd rather not.

So instead she focused in on Trissa, the fun older student from her own house and bounced over to pause next to her. "hi!!" She chirped, before bouncing between her two feet. Hearing one of the older students ask about running, V perked up even more so. "OOOOOH that sounds fun! Can we do that? Go running?" Professor M WAS involved with the health group thing right??
She grinned when Vera called her Professor M; so the first year was okay with that? Good. Because using an initial was definitely better than being called a Panini. "Hi Vera. No running today, I'm afraid. But hopefully something better," She smiled, a mischievous gleam in her eyes.

Her mood could change in a matter of moments based off a comment or someone’s body language. She had begun to read into things in more depth which led her to stay up late overthinking things.

So she was glad to be out in the crisp weather.

Appropriately dressed for the weather, she joined the group and nodded her head towards their Professor in greeting. “Hello Professor. Should we stretch before today’s activities?” she asked having picked up on the comments around games. With that, she made her way to stand near Kinsay and Val. “Hi”, she whispered.
"Hello Lisa, oh yes that's maybe a good idea... Stretching. If you feel it's necessary you can definitely do some stretching, but it's not required by any means," she nodded

It had also been a reminder that class was not to be held there this day. By happy accident, she had arrived early and therefore there had been no need to rush or otherwise hasten her steps to arrive outdoors and make her way over to the group. The only unfortunate snag in it all was the fact that she had arrived in uniform which, to be fair, was not all that different from what she constituted as comfortable clothing. Dark skirt, blouse, knee socks, foot coverings. The only notable difference was that her outer black robe was now folded over her bag.

Giving the group a glance around, the second year pondered briefly over where to cease her movements...when she found herself distracted by a bit of dandelion fluff floating by on a breeze.

It was one of those days.

Her hand moving in tandem with the movement of the delightful fluff until it landed on Luca's shoulder. Plucking it from his shoulder, she held it in the palm of her hand and gently pushed it around there while settling into a seat beside her yearmate. The rest of the set up and potential hints of the lesson ahead? Completely lost on her. There was dandelion fluff, you see.
The snag to wearing the uniform was that Leanne wasn't sure that a skirt would be suitable for today's activities. But she was sure that they could work something out when the time came. If nothing else, she did happen to know a powerful summoning charm that could get her some shorts to slip on under the skirt. Also, she definitely was unaware of auras circulating around the charms classroom; divination had not been Leanne's forte. But if there was a negative aura, she was glad to not be around it. She gave a curt nod at the young ravenclaw, who seemed quite distracted which was fine for the moment.

However, she had learned that the term "comfortable clothes" was school code for "we're going to do something outdoorsy or athletic" so she had dressed accordingly. "Hello, Professor Mancini," she greeted the teacher dutifully.

She gave a shy but inviting smile to Caes, but did not go over to stand with him just now, because she didn't want to seem pushy and she was still not quite sure how he felt about her. Walking over to stand near Ash she commented, "Hi, Ash. Like the braids--good look."

Looking around her, Violet noted how close they were to the Forbidden Forest and tried to suppress a slight shiver. When she'd first come to Hogwarts, Violet had been consumed with the desire to go out and investigate the Forest, partly out of curiosity and partly because it was forbidden. But ever since Headmaster Trent (no, not Trent, she reminded herself) had led them out there into a trap and left them surrounded by Acromantulas to make their way out as best they could--well, that tended to dampen one's enthusiasm for investigating a place. So Violet really hoped that their lesson did not involve going in there.
"Hello Violet." She was glad that at least someone learned comfortable clothes meant outdoorsy or athletic, since it was something that Leanne had conveniently overlooked.

Leaving the professor ungreeted, as was his wont, Milo didn't acknowledge the ball in her hands either. He was instead preoccupied with Mercer's comment, yet another indicator of all his two friends were susceptible to and all they were oblivious of, and all that they did to vex him. Most of it apparently intentional, though the motive was less clear.

For his part, Milo had been feeling strange all day, the kind of strange which often led him to avoid the grounds, and the kind of strange that occasionally led him to find himself out there all the same. There was nothing to be said for now, so he shredded a fallen leaf into tiny pieces of confetti foliage and waited for something to happen.
It was the completion to the M trifecta. This one, like Mitsuki, didn't bother with any greetings, which to be honest Leanne was okay with. She knew that not all the students were social humans and some had different levels of chattiness. All that she hoped for was respect, particularly when it came to paying attention. She merely gave him a nod of acknowledgement.

Charms class normally would have every potential to cheer her up, but it being on the grounds only made her frustration worse. Especially the sight of Professor Mancini with a kick ball.

Major shuddering.

Remy slumped quietly onto a bench and was upset about the lack of desk to rudely place her elbows onto.

Hopefully she'll cheer up once they got started.

Arriving on the grounds a polite smile was given to the professor. "Good afternoon, Professor." He eyed the ball she had for a brief moment before choosing to stand near his sister. If they needed to work as a team or something they might actually be able to handle that. Maybe?
Even though Vasco wasn't in her house, Leanne had felt like she knew him more because of Vera. The blue house, she had said. She wondered sometimes if Vera felt resentment for her brother being sorted into Ravenclaw, similar to her own sister's resentment at not being a ravenclaw. His eyes caught sight of Ash and her braided hair. Sirius felt his cheeks flush a little and quickly turned to look at something else...like this bench, where he will sit, yes.
She hoped that today's lesson would be appealing to even the non-athletic of students. Leanne smiled warmly at the Sirius, hoping he'd be okay with what was planned. Which shouldn't be too sweaty.

"Hello Professor!" he greeted her as he eyed the kickball she was currently juggling.
"Hello Adam," she greeted, noting the extra layers of clothing he was wearing. Always better to be prepared, but fortunately today was a lovely day.

Good choice in attire. She supposed it wasn't surprising though, as Alfred wasn't ignorant when it came to the meaning of comfortable clothes. Still, Leanne learned that she need to be more specific in specifying athletic attire. She stopped juggling the ball now, tucking it under one arm, as she narrowed her eyes at the fourth year. "This isn't naptime, Alfred. Please sit up, you have a backbone." And that was all she was going to say on the subject.

She was about to get started - which fortunately for Ignacio there was no door to close - when she saw him jogging down to the gathering place. She gave a nod back to him as he took a seat.

"Right, let's get started than shall we." She continued to hold the ball at her hip, as she looked around to address the lot. It seemed as if people had fortunately remembered the location of charms class today, even if not all interpreted comfortable clothing to be athletic attire. It was something she needed to rectify for future lessons, for sure. Her fault though, not the students.

"So today's lesson we'll be focusing on a particular charm which is that of the gripping charm. Let's start by telling me what you know about the charm. Which conveniently, this ball here, I've cast the gripping charm on." She proceeds to toss the ball to the first person to raise their hand, to demonstrate how easy it is to catch. "I have another ball here without the gripping charm on it, if you want to see the difference." She tossed that out on the other side of the group, so they could pass it around. It's also a different colour so they could tell them apart easier.

ooc: welp. i meant to post here sooner and then life happened, but hiii ... thanks for bearing with me ANYWAY, lesson officially commencing now, so pretend as though you've been here the whole time if you didn't get a post in first.
ALSO, Mancini tossed two kickballs out on opposite sides. One that she was juggling had the gripping charm cast on it (which is RED). Feel free to claim as your character catching it and then TOSS it to someone else....... Maybe the person who posts before you tosses it to you? Keep it vague who you're tossing at so that anyone can post after hope this all makes sense.
The other kickball (let's say it's BLUE), has no charms cast on it and this is just one you can freely pass around as a way to compare and feel the difference.
we'll continue tomorrow night :3

Default Catching the red ball from Mancini then tossing it to someone else!
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

It was times like Jude decided his dad was right: he should have a haircut. That breeze milling about kept blowing the dark strands right into his face and no matter how much he tried to push them back, they stubbornly refused to stay. In the end, Jude gave up so he ended up peering out at everyone through a curtain of his hair. “Hi,’’ he warmly greeted Phoenix. Then there was his sister’s dorm mate - Val - who got a return wave. Margaret was someone he usually kept a distance from for reasons but he gave her a smile today. As did Ash and Desiree {the latter who always wore the cutest outfits!}.

And then they were off to a start. The Gripping Charm. Nice! It made sense that Mancini had cast the spell on the ball; it was why she had expertly handled it. Not that he doubted your athletic abilities, professor! The Hufflepuff raised his hand, and at the same time became aware that the same ball was heading his way. He quickly caught it and immediately noticed how different it felt than a regular ball. This red ball was certainly easier to hold onto. “Uh, I think the charm was invented in the late 1800s.” The exact year slipped his mind, okay? Done with providing his answer, Jude tossed the ball towards someone else.

Birdbrain got a smile when he joined the group and stood next to her, as well as a salute in hello. She would have spoken, perhaps tried to shout things to embarrass him, except the lesson was starting which meant there was no time. He was safe from her for now. The gripping charm, hm??? Could she cast it on gloves for better climbing? That would probably work WONDERS on her future Whomping Willow climbing escapades! It couldn't throw her off if she had sticking gloves to keep her in place right?!

V really really wanted to catch the blue ball because it was pretty but but... The older Hufflepuff was tossing the red one and she was under the impression now that you could only talk if you were holding the red. And in case anyone hadn't noticed, Vera really liked to talk.

Jumping for a ball, she caught it with a giggle, throwing it from hand to hand for a moment before offering something about the charm. Which she knew nothing of. "The gripping charm is good for climbing walls! Like a lizard!" Her little tongue flicked out to demonstrate her point, in case anyone didn't know what a lizard was.

Done talking, she took the opportunity to YEET the ball to the next person. This was fun!

At the Professor’s reply, Lisa began stretching. If they recommended it, she’d be doing it. She began with a quad stretch as she listened to their set of instructions. Jude had caught the ball first and offered a fact about the gripping charm. Then a ickle first year offered an idea and related it to a lizard which earned a chuckle from Lisa. She liked lizards. Pascal was still her faithful companion even if he preferred to stay in her dorm room underneath her lamp.

She caught the red ball next not sure where it had been headed. “I think the charm has something to do with Quidditch and Chaser’s. I think it helped Chaser’s catch and hold onto the quaffle more easily than before?” Maybe that’s what her Quidditch obsessed friends had been recounting tales of over the summer. She swore it had something to do with a quaffle but her mind was more hazy.

"Oh, I'm having a ball!" Mercer grabby-handsed at the blue ball at it was tossed generally in his direction. Granted, he still hadn't replaced his sacrificed glasses, so the ball bounced off his face and further into the crowd of his classmates.

"Um. If that was grippy, would it have stuck to my face? Is it better to grippy charm the ball or your hands?" Mercer rubbed his sore nose, but it wasn't bleeding... so that was a big old win in his book.

Jocelyn looked up when Professor Mancini addressed the students. Zipping up her running jacket - it was getting a little cold - she nodded as she took note of the charm they would be focusing on this lesson. The first year had never heard of the gripping charm before, so she felt that could not say anything in response to the first question.

She did, however, want to try catching the ball that had the gripping charm on. A Muggle-born, Jo was still constantly amazed by magic. She raised her hands, caught the red ball, and noticed that the object was easier to hold on to than usual. "Can it help people with weak hand strength, Professor? Maybe if they grippy charm their hands they can hold everything better," she suggested, thinking about Mercer's answer.

Summer was listening to the Professor, she wasn't sure what the charm was or what she was supposed to do at the moment, so she just stayed still and silent... like seriously what charm was this. She had never heard of it before. Maybe she should have listened to her mother more, when she was younger.

Jacoby had come in his comfiest of clothes ready for whatever was to come. Oh a gripping charm man was his sisters not going to like him much once he figured out how to make it work like a charm. Him and Zeek would be causing a ruckus with that. He watched as people looked at the ball he raised his hand, "It can help grip things to walls right?" He swore this was the charm his dad taught him before he came back this year so his bunkmate Aiden would have glow in the dark stars hanging around. He glanced around some more trying not to bring too much attention to himself.

Professor M's up and down look did not go unnoticed. Kins wasn't embarrassed though. Her outfit was suuuper cute. Maybe Professor M was admiring it too. See, dressing out of uniform was sooo much better. Professors should really encourage it all the time. The uniforms were itchy and hideous.

Anyway. Kins wasn't planning to answer the question, but when one of the balls were tossed her way, she made a quick move to catch it. And then the attention was on her. So. So she had to answer the question.

Except. Something Lisa had mentioned caught Kinsay's attention... Because she had heard the thing about quaffles too and it got her thinking. "Are quidditch players allowed to use gripping charms on their brooms?" Kinsay James, of course, had opinions on this, but she kept them to herself as she tossed the ball to someone else.

Luca had decided Mitsuki was probably the most peculiar person at this school. In a good way. Like, he pretty much never understood what she was doing, but he always found himself wanting to learn. Just ‘cause. Like the whole fluff situation. He watched her toying with it, eyebrows raised. It could just be that it was soft and stuff, but maybe she was able to like, gauge how the day was going to go based on the texture or something. You never knew with her.

The whole passing the balls back and forth thing wasn’t so bad except when that Mercer kid got hit in the face, Luca winced a little and hoped he wouldn’t suffer the same fate. He’d be just a little more watchful from now on. You know, ready to catch. With his hands. Not his nose.

When he found himself with the red ball safely in hands, he smiled a little because yeah, it was easier to hold on to. ”Using the gripping charm probably helps with confidence. Like maybe you’re not as worried about or more willing to pull off a catch or a risky throw with the charm in place.” He shrugged a bit and tossed the ball on to the next kid.

For one who did not care about the grace and insight of a dandelion, someone was certainly drawing much attention to it. Though, presently, Mitsuki was entirely too enthralled with the way it softly tickled her skin and lay across a particular line in her palm. Curious. Interesting. But mostly curious.

Looking up at Mercer's accusation, she simply stared at her friend while trying to assess just how he had drawn such a conclusion. "If I had a second mouth," she replied calmly. "It would not be in my palm but the back of my head beneath my hair." So, no, she certainly was not eating her dandelion fluff because there was no mouth in her palm with which to do so. Hopefully such clarification was beneficial to both Mercer and the professor, who both seemed confused at present. Milo's arrival signaled a spectral comfort and she may have offered him a smile were it not for the breeze that suddenly swept the area and took the pappus along with it.

Her lips twitched downwards ever so slightly and her skin felt lonely, which was why she pressed her palms together. And her palms stayed together as class properly began and Professor Mancini provided a bit of framework to today's lesson - even if she had nothing to really contribute to the particular discussion. In fact, she was far too distracted by the two balls being tossed around and eventually Mercer tried to catch with his face. Perhaps he thought he had hands on his face like he seemed to think she had a mouth in her palm.

Watching as the blue ball bounced and rolled away after its encounter with Mercer, Mitsuki folded her hands in front of her and clasped them there as Luca's toss of the red ball lobbed itself in her direction...to which she sidestepped it and avoided any effort in trying to catch it. Nothing against him nor was his toss inadequate, she simply sensed it was not the time. The red ball rolled to a stop and Mitsuki considered it a moment before looking back at Luca with a small shrug and weak half smile before her attention returned to Mercer.

"Will you try to get hit in the face with the red ball as well to observe the difference upon impact?" she inquired. If so, she could perhaps fetch the red one she had just dodged.

Caes' eyes wandered over to the Forbidden Forest, occasionally glancing over to see others walk by. He did see Violet, which got him to return the smallest of smiles he could manage with a pinky wave before he turned his attention back to the surroundings. He felt a motion towards him causing him to turn his face, immediately grabbing onto the flying ball.

"...The charm is attractive to others." That did make up the gripping, right? He tossed the ball over to whoever was next or neaby.

Oh it was okay if he did doubt her athletic abilities! While she might have been able to hold her own in sports once upon a time, she'd be the first to admit that she was no longer 20 years old!! Mancini observed as Jude carefully handled the red ball, nodding at his answer, "Exactly. It was invented in 1875 particularly for use in quidditch, although it is definitely not limited to that."

"Funny you should mention climbing walls. Because while not originally intended as such... well, yes we will hopefully be climbing." Which now that Mancini was thinking about it, maybe wasn't such a good idea. Oops. Too late now to change the plans?

"This was exactly the original intent of inventing this charm!! It eliminated the use of finger holes and straps, so chasers to could hold onto the quaffle one-handed!" Did Lisa play quidditch? Leanne didn't think so, but perhaps she knew enough about the sport to know that much.

Leanned smiled at the young ravenclaw. She watched the blue ball bounce from his face towards his peers, noting any negative effects. But Mercer seemed unfazed.

"A gripping charm doesn't mean that it's sticky, so no it wouldn't stick to your face. It just makes it easier to hold without the use of straps of finger holes." Which was a bit complicated to explain so hopefully someone could pass the red ball to him soon and he could see it firsthand.

She didn't have to do anything at the moment and if she didn't know anything about the charm, that was okay too!! Fortunately the gripping charm basically had what it did in it's name. Although the incantation wasn't so straightforward.

Kinsay should have seen the uniforms like forty years ago. She would have been in a state of horror. And while they hadn't changed THAT much in appearance, she knew even from when her children attended Hogwarts that the material had improved triple-fold since her own hogwarts days. So comfort-wise, these kids had a lot going for them when it came to the uniforms.

She blinked at the question, taken aback. "Well, I don't believe it's technically against the rules... although I've never really heard of quidditch players casting the gripping charm on their brooms." Interesting point though.

"You could say that. It's like training wheels. And while you could definitely still drop the object, the gripping charm makes it less likely."

She noted Mitsuki sidestepping to avoid contact with red ball, which Leanne had to wonder if it was self-preservation in not wanting taking a ball to the face as her friend did. Or because she had nothing to add to the discussion. Regardless, it seemed as though this discussion was wearing thin. She did hope that no one else took any balls to the face though, because the next person might not be so lucky as Mercer.

"...The charm is attractive to others." That did make up the gripping, right? He tossed the ball over to whoever was next or neaby.
Wait. What? Leanne had to blink at Caes' answer because she wasn't sure what he was talking about? OH. He meant attractive in that it was like static cling, attractive.

"Not quite. The gripping charm doesn't really give magnetic properties, but instead merely allows you to not drop an object."

Leanne went to retrieve/intercept the balls from being passed around more, setting them on the ground beside her. "Good, good... so it seems some of you have a basic understanding of the gripping charm, or at the very least have heard of it. It's a charm that was invented in 1875 for use on the quaffle to eliminate the need for straps and finger holes. It allowed chasers to throw and catch the quaffle easily and one-handed."

"While not originally intended for use on climbing, it's how we're going to attempt to use it today." So kudos to Jacoby and Vera. "But first we need to practice. Which i have a box of gloves here for to practice on. You may practice alone or with a partner."

She turned and moved a box of balls that had previously been concealed behind the tree into the clearing.

"The incantation is Queritorto.... Khere-it-or-to." She emphasized on the syllables and pronunciation. "The wand movement is a circular movement around the object, in this case gloves. So go ahead and come get yourselves a pair of gloves and let's practice for a few moments before we move on. If you didn't get the chance to handle the red and blue balls we were passing around earlier, you're welcome to come and hold them each to compare. You'll need to cast the charm on each glove."

ooc: moving on to practicing the incantation on a pair of gloves!!! Note the gloves are magically charmed so they'll size adjust to accommodate different sized hands, so no worries about sizing. Example of the gloves provided here. if you need help, holler !!! We'll move onto the activity in a day or two depending on how things go with charm practicing.

Another note: so it's been brought to my attention that a different incantation was utilized back in term 30 which I had overlooked. We will be continuing forward with learning an alternative/second variant of the gripping charm. We'll develop some canon in the coming days to discuss it further IC. If your character happens to have heard of the other variant and wants to bring it up, please ask

So the charm was initially invented for Quidditch, the sport. Jo hoped to fly well enough to play someday, so the history of the charm just made the lesson a whole lot more interesting for her. She went to get a pair of gloves for herself, and took out her yew wand upon returning to her bench.

"Queritorto ... Khere-it-or-to," the Slytherin practised the incantation first, concentrating on the pronunciation of each syllable. Then the wand movement, which was a circular movement around each glove. "Queritorto!" she said, while drawing a circle around the left glove with her wand.

... Nope, still felt like a normal glove. It seemed that she needed more practice with the charm.

"Ah, but it's the perfect weather for it!" Not really, but you know. "And how do you know I have a backbone? I am a Slytherin according to the hat, after all...." No offense, just Alfred being Alfred. Though, his house did appear to produce some spineless people on the regular. He did sit up, however, though straddling the bench, so that he was sitting sideways.

The gripping charm? They had already covered this back at Beauxbatons, but everything he thought of about the spell was already said by someone else before it could come out of his mouth. So, he sat there silent, whacking the blue ball away quickly as it sailed in his direction. And cringing a little when that one kid got whacked in the face.

Climbing? Climbing what, the trees? Not that Alfred had a problem with that, really. Just that it was relatively easy to climb trees without a charm. Not that he would know anything about it or anything.

He got up, grabbed a pair of gloves, and returned to his bench, this time sitting on it the correct way. Of course, having already encountered the spell he didn't need to practice. "Queritorto." There, now his gloves had a better grip. And he was bored.

Oh, we're climbing today. Caes thought. Something he was very used to. He glanced again at the trees nearby, wondering if they would be climbing them or not. He eventually went up to get some gloves to put on before muttering the spell. Khere-it-or-to..

He withdrew his wand out to mimick the circular motion around the gloved hand, Queritorto... Queritorto... After some time he began to feel something constrict in his hand. Did it work? Hm. Interesting.

Kinsay made her way over to fetch a pair of hideous climbing gloves and set them down on one of the benches so that she could properly cast the spell over them. Not wanting to look silly, she did make sure to take the time to practice repeating the spell in her head. Several times. Just in case. If only she felt confident in her ability to perform nonverbals. It'd certainly lessen any embarrassment that came with mispronunciation. But. But she just wasn't there yet. So. So yeah.

Instead, she quietly rehearsed. Khere-it-or-to. Khere-it-or-to. Khere-it-or-to. The wand movement was easy enough, so rather than practice it separately, she simply went ahead a cast the spell on each glove, circle her wand around them as she did so. "Queritorto... Queritorto..."

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Indeed Jude had a basic understanding of the spell. Since it was mentioned that they were going to use the spell for climbing, Jude immediately thought of the Muggle Superhero, Spiderman. And he couldn’t help it: he grinned. While not a huge Superhero nerd, he had watched every Spiderman movie to date with Keigh. Yep, even the ancient ones.

Practicing on gloves was a good start, especially since the gloves were of the cool type. Jude grabbed a pair and pulled it on; the pair fit snugly on his hands. And yeah. He actually admired his hands for a bit because they looked rather nice with this type of gloves. It was this lesson, in fact, that influenced his love for them and in turn influenced him in using the things when he played the piano as an adult for his future concerts. As for practice, he was already repeating the incantation in his head. The Hufflepuff was worried about his spell work as lately it had been absolutely atrocious.

Eventually, he began saying the words out loud but softly to himself. “Khere-it-or-to. Khere-it-or-to. Queritorto.” A circular wand movement was easy enough. No need to practice that bit.

Wait. WAIT.

Did Progessor M just say they were going to be... CLIMBING!? Like for REAL!? Vera's comment had been more wishful thinking than a true guess, but she was absolutely DELIGHTED she'd been on the right track and that was the activity for today. She wasn't even disappointed any longer that they wouldn't be running!

She rushed to grab herself a set of gloves for practice, plopping herself down on the ground near the rest of the supplies as she was SO anxious to start. Wiggling a bit, she pulled out her wand and began to draw the wand movement over her gloves. "Quierototoro!" ... Wait, they didn't seem right. And she was lucky nothing seemed to happen either. "Kharetoto?" The glove just made a feeble movement at that, which she was also fairly certain she was NOT right then. One would think she would have realized by now that just because she had a wand that was good for charms, didn't mean it could make up for poor pronunciation of the booooooring incantations.

Pushing herself up, she moved closer to some other students to observe them for a moment, paying SPECIAL attention to the way they said it. After hearing it a few times from eavesdropping on her classmates, she was ready to try again. She drew the wand movement over her glove and tried again. "Queritorto. Queritorto. Queritorto." She was pretty sure she had the word right this time, and she must have since after about seven attempts it seemed like maybe she'd had some success.

A Quidditch charm, eh? No wonder Violet had never heard of it. She shrugged and adjusted the glove onto her hand, and then circled it with her wand several times, chanting "Queriorto. Queriorto. Queriorto." Curiously, she looked closer at her gloved hand--didn't it feel different, somehow? Violet wished she could test it on something to be sure, before trusting it to hold her up while climbing.

She glanced over at Caes, who had returned her smile, but just barely. Had she done something to offend him somehow? Or maybe he was just tired of her; maybe he was feeling like he didn't want this friendship to go any further. Violet saw him looking eagerly toward the trees and remembered some of the stories he'd told her about recreational activities at Koldovstoretz, riding trees like they were brooms! She bet Caes would be great at climbing, gripping charm or no gripping charm. She just hoped she didn't embarrass herself in front of him today.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Of all the objects in the world available that they could practice the gripping charm on and play catch more, Mancini had decided that climbing was a good idea? Margaret was disappointed. Still, learning about something useful like the gripping charm was cool.

Maybe she could use it to do Quidditch training with a football in the summer--because yes, by next summer she'd be of age and actually able to do magic at home.

But first, practice. "Queritorto," she muttered several times on her way to get a pair of gloves. What a weird word, Queritorto. She donned a pair of gloves and pointed her wand at one hand. "Queritorto," she said firmly, ignoring her classmates' sounds as she focused on circling her wand around her gloved hand. She flexed her hand, testing the charm. Then something occurred to her.

She raised her grippy, gloved hand. "Professor, is there a special incantation to remove it or do we just use Finite?" she asked. Some spells had special opposites, like engorgio. Though she supposed that was because the action they did had an obvious opposite.

Climbing was something Luca could actually do, so it was probably pretty obvious by his expression that he was relieved. Now he could focus entirely on the whole glove task without worrying too much over team sports coming into play.

"Queritorto....quer-it-or-to...queritorto," He murmured quietly to himself, practicing as he went up to retrieve a pair of gloves from the box. He waited until he'd returned to his spot before slipping the gloves on and considering how his wand felt in each hand. You know, before the whole charm thing came into play. It was the only way he figured he'd know that his spell had worked. Knowing the before feel and then the after. Once he was satisfied with his mini experiment, he took the gloves off and focused on the one for his right hand.

"Queritorto," He said firmly, brow furrowed as he circled his wand around the glove. Had it worked? He hesitated for a moment before actually slipping the glove on, clenching and unclenching his now gloved hand before holding the wand with it. It felt a bit stronger. His grip, that is. But it wasn't the sort of life saving climbing glove miracle he'd hoped for. Maybe he needed to try again..
