Listed here is more information pertaining to each division within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and more specific duties and expectations of each role within those divisions. Any training or additional qualifications will be included here. Here you will also find active cases and important tasks being completed by Level Two at this time.

All information here is intended to supplement your RPing around the ministry, and in some cases serve as a reference for subplots or ministry-wide plot. Feel free to use it to inform your RPs and as a reference for what your character might be getting up to at work, or as inspiration for an RP set on Level Two.

ADMINISTRATION
Administration staff deal with day-to-day running of the department. All other divisions in Magical Law Enforcement work with the administration staff. Work is predominantly office and Ministry based, and involves a range of administrative tasks, including liaising with other departments in the Ministry of Magic.

Department Head of Magical Law Enforcement
  • Responsible for the day-to-day running of Level Two
  • Must be familiar with all aspects of every Law Enforcement division
  • Liaises with the Minister for Magic
  • Makes independent decisions in the area of Law and Law Enforcement which affect wizarding Britain
  • Responsible for all particulars which fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement
  • Sits on the Wizengamot and other interdepartmental committees on boards as a consultant (on occasion)
  • Approves and arranges individual training of Level Two employees (except where training is a job requirement already arranged)
  • Sets objectives for all divisions in the department
  • Signs off on department-relevant requests and reports
  • Follows up on concerns raised by team leaders and other Level Two employees

Personal Assistant to the Department Head
  • Answers directly to the department head; follows all direct instructions
  • Interacts with many employees and officials across the Ministry, in various contexts
  • Schedules meetings on the department head's behalf where necessary
  • Keeps track of the department head's schedule and makes adjustments where necessary
  • Handles any tasks or general errands delegated to them by the department head, for example:
    • Assisting in meetings
    • Taking minutes
    • Paperwork
    • Coffee runs
    • Hand-delivering messages or files
    • Fetching people or items

Department Receptionist
  • Based at the reception desk on Level Two
  • Handles specific assignments given to them by the department head
  • Handles general mail addressed to department; passes along individual mail to the recipient
  • May assist in the writing and distribution of notices and letters from and within the department
  • Greets and directs visitors
  • Responds to general questions and enquiries

Department Liaison
  • Facilitates communications between the department and the Internal Liaison Office
  • Assists in resolving any interdepartmental conflicts that may arise
  • Serves as a point of contact for Level Two employees with issues concerning other departments

IMPROPER USE OF MAGIC OFFICE
This office is tasked with monitoring, preventing and containing any and all instances of the magical misuse. As a result, there are several divisions in this department, dedicated to some form of surveillance, detection, or investigation. Careful records are kept in this department and field work becomes a must when matters concerning the improper use of magic are concerned. The Improper Use of Magic Office deals with offences that are more regulatory in nature than criminal, but will cooperate with MLES where required if offenses escalate or are committed by a wanted criminal. Both field work and office-based work occurs in this division.

IUMO Laboratory Supervisor
  • Ensure laboratory is kept in working order and required equipment is provided
  • Oversee IUMO specialists within the laboratory and give aid where required
  • Liaise with other departments to provide necessary services
  • Sign off on requests made by employees in other departments to use the lab and equipment (along with the relevant Department Heads)
  • Lab-based but may be required to work with IUMO Investigative Team in the field on occasion

IUMO Counterfeit Magic and Charmed Artifact Identification Specialist
  • Analyse any and all evidence brought in for testing by Magical Law Enforcement (and any other Ministry Department as required)
  • Assist the IUMO Investigative team
  • Identify and safely handle dark or dangerous magic and safely restore artifacts to their original, non-magical state
  • Lab-based but may be required to accompany the Investigative team where indicated by the IUMO Chief Inspector

The IUMO will occasionally work alongside the Auror Office or MLES when the situation calls for their areas of expertise, as well as the Department of Accidents and Catastrophes (particularly in cases involving incidents caused by counterfeit magic, or the need for Obliviators or other specialist roles). This office will also often liaise with the Department of International Magical Cooperation where necessary in the prevention of illegal magical trade.

Training offered in this division is compulsory for members of the IUMO Investigative Team, and must be undergone by all new hires and completed on their own time within a general, given period. Those on the Analysis and Assessment team are not required to complete the full training course, but certification in individual modules may be requested depending on the individual and their job placement. Those not required to pass this training for their job role may choose to undertake any training modules.

The MLES ensures that wizarding law is followed to the letter and works with other specialty divisions within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement where required, if the criminal activity overlaps.

Magical Evidence Retrieval and Review Team
Evidence Collection and Preservation Supervisor, Crime Scene Photographer, Evidence Retrieval Officer, Pensieve Review Specialist

Evidence Collection and Preservation Supervisor
  • Directs those who are at the scene to find evidence
  • Ensures everything is left untouched and preserved for the case
  • Archives every item of evidence
  • Makes sure that all the paperwork is completed and turned in to the Department Head
  • Responsible for the entire team's correct handling and preservation of evidence

Crime Scene Photographer
  • Takes photographs of the crime scene before anything is disturbed and before evidence is retrieved
  • Records as much detail from the scene as possible before investigative teams can get to work
  • Must not touch or move any object on the scene
  • Develops the pictures that have been taken

Evidence Retrieval Officer
  • Collects and bags every item on or in the vicinity of the crime scene
  • Must not compromise evidence by touching it with bare hands, or by using magic ill-suited to the situation
  • Assesses when evidence should not be disturbed, due to defensive and protective charms, potions, or objects

Pensieve Review Specialist
  • Studies and analyses memories collected from witnesses and suspects
  • Keeps detailed records of memories
  • Studies the structure of the memories to check for any tampering
  • Must possess a keen eye for detail that is not tempered by familiarity

Those holding an entry level position within this division or those seeking some form of advancement must take on further studies, or make specific applications and undergo review, as required. The criteria for each division/specific area are as follows:

Hit Wizard/Witch

All Hit Wizards and Witches must show proficiency (at least a pass) in Defensive Charms and Counter-Curses, Advanced Magical Combat, Arrest and Take Down, Magical Law and Legislation, Covert Magical Operations, Questioning and Interrogation, and Magical Criminal Profiling. Below are the modules covered in Hit Wizard training. Additional specialist modules are available.

Hit Wizard Training modules are regularly reviewed and subject to change. Content is occasionally adjusted, new modules added, and basic requirements updated. Established Hit Wizards and Witches are not expected to retrain with every change in the training modules, but in the case of significant additions to the training, they will be required to undergo assessment to ensure they are up to scratch.

Updated or refresher courses in all modules, plus additional specialist training courses, are available to members of the MLES during regular testing periods. Access to Hit Wizard Training can be made available to those placed elsewhere in the department who are interested in a move to this division. This can be arranged by the department head upon request, individual suitability permitting.


Patrol Officer, Patrol Officer-in-Training

Patrol Officers-in-Training undertake their initial required training during a three month orientation, before progressing onto the Patrol Officer training course. Core modules covered in this course are:
  • Arrest and Take Down
  • Control and Restraint
  • Critical Incident Response
  • Crowd Control
  • Magical Combat
  • Magical Law and Legislation
  • Observation and Situation Assessment
  • Patrolling

MLES Patrol Officers may apply to train in any Hit Wizard courses as they become available. Upon gaining the core Hit Wizard subjects and demonstrating applied competence in each, a Patrol Officer may apply for Hit Wizard certification which will be accepted or declined at the department head's discretion. This upskilling process is expected to take approximately 4-5 years.

AUROR OFFICE
Aurors are an elite Magical Law Enforcement unit tasked with protecting the wizarding world from dark wizards and witches. They specialise in the identification and defence against dark magic and are taught to use any means necessary to take down a dark wizard; they are licensed to use even Unforgivable Curses if a situation calls for it.

There are various Auror ranks (see below). Aurors may move up in rankings with experience and years of service.

Junior Auror
  • Provides shadowing experience to YATI Trainees on patrols or when working cases
    • Provides YATI Trainees with productive and experience-appropriate tasks during shadowing
  • Leads and guide YATI Trainees while working cases and building skillsets
  • Opportunity to advance to Senior Auror with experience and years of service and the appropriate training (usually after at least three years in the role of Junior Auror, and/or exceptional performance)

YATI Trainee
  • Focuses on training and ultimately testing out of the YATI programme
  • Partners with Aurors to shadow during patrols or when working cases in order to learn on the job
  • Provides input in investigations and the planning of operations
  • Engages with those employed in the Auror Office in order to further learning and understanding of procedure and the career as a whole

The YATI programme offers comprehensive training in a range of modules, many of which are studied formally off site, while on-the-job training and shadowing occurs within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

All Aurors (whether they go through the Ministry's YATI scheme or another Ministry approved Auror Training programme) must meet the minimum requirements. They must show proficiency (at least a pass) in Stealth and Tracking, Advanced Magical Combat, and Concealment and Disguise, plus a minimum of five other specialist subjects. Auror training modules are regularly reviewed and subject to change. Content is occasionally adjusted, new modules added, and basic requirements updated. Established Aurors are not expected to retrain with every change in the training modules, but in the case of significant additions to the training, they will be required to undergo assessment to ensure they are up to scratch.

Updated or refresher courses in all modules, plus additional specialist training courses, are available to members of the Auror Office during regular testing periods. Access to Auror Training can be made available to those placed elsewhere in the department who are interested in a move to this division. This can be arranged by the department head upon request, individual suitability permitting.

MINISTRY SECURITY
There are many roles in Ministry security ranging from the Wand Weighers who work in the atrium, to special event security, internal liaisons and internal investigations specialists, sentinels and level guards. Some of the security work requires specialty knowledge while other positions are entry level. The Security Office is heavily relied upon, and required to operate at the highest of standards to provide internal protection to the British Ministry of Magic.

  • Focuses on the security of the Ministry environment, rather than of the employees
  • Defends the Ministry from outside forces as well as preventing security issues within
  • Performs routine surveys and assessments of the Ministry premises to ensure this
  • Ensures restricted areas remain restricted
  • May be called upon by any department head across the Ministry in order to check, establish, and enforce restrictions

Security Officer
  • Patrols and guards particular areas of the Ministry
  • Patrols and guards sites of Ministry interest around wizarding Britain
  • Works with Ministry Sentinels and Internal Investigations Liaisons as necessary
  • Works at direction of Head of Security and Department Head

Wand Weigher
  • Assesses, examines and identifies all wands coming into the Ministry of Magic
  • Records anomalies such as unregistered wands, or wands not registered to the bearer
  • Registers wands of new Ministry employees
  • Distributes temporary or replacement wands as necessary (at the discretion of Department Head)
  • Keeps a current list of employees who are licensed to carry a second wand
  • Follows up on all Ministry accounts held at Ollivanders
  • Keeps up to date with new cores and woods
  • Maintains the upkeep and condition of all Ministry spare wands
  • Based at the Security desk in the Atrium

WIZENGAMOT
The Wizengamot is wizarding Britain's judicial and legislative authority and serves both as high court of law and parliament. There are fifty members in the Wizengamot at any one time, made up of important personages of wizarding society. They are only summoned to the ministry when required and in most cases, only a selection of the fifty will be called upon at any one time. The Wizengamot wear plum coloured robes embroidered with a silver letter W when court is in session. The Minister for Magic, Senior Undersecretary to the Minister, and Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement have been known to attend significant trials and hearings.

The Wizengamot Administration Services office employs a court scribe to sit in on Wizengamot sessions, manage the Wizengamot roster, and work with all departments across the ministry, via the Department of Magical Law Enforcement in regards to setting court dates and hearings for offenders. They also help source mediators, lawyers and advisors as required by the public. The British Office of Wizarding Law provide courtroom prosecutors, mediators, documentation experts, and legislators as required by the ministry.

Wizarding Director of Prosecution
  • Oversees the British Ministry legal team
  • Liaises with outside legal representation where necessary
  • Requires a close working relationship with the Ministers Office and the Department of International Cooperation, as well as within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement itself
  • Runs prosecution on high profile cases
  • Provides support to the Wizengamot Commissioner, the Wizengamot Chief Warlock and the Magical Law Enforcement Department Head as required
  • Ministry based

Ministry Prosecutor
  • Requires a close working relationship with the Ministers Office and the Department of International Cooperation, as well as within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement
  • Runs prosecution on criminal cases as required
  • Works at the direction of the Wizarding Director of Public Prosecution, Wizengamot Commissioner and Dept. Head of Magical Law Enforcement as indicated
  • Responsible for bringing evidence against the accused in such a manner that there is no room for reasonable doubt. The following are considered circumstantial evidence and must be backed by other forms of evidence:
    • Testimony of ghosts and other spirits
    • Testimony extracted under Veritaserum
    • Information gained via divination or the Sight
    • Information gained via Legilimency
    • Extracted memories
    • Information gained through the use of a Time-Turner

Ministry Jurisprudent
  • Advises on magical legal matters for individuals and/or the Ministry when new laws are being passed
  • Researches potential far-reaching effects of new laws and legislation; advises relevant parties regarding these matters
  • Requires a close working relationship with all Ministry departments
  • Works at the direction of the Wizarding Director of Public Prosecution, Wizengamot Commissioner and Deptartment Head of Magical Law Enforcement as indicated
  • Ministry based

Ministry Legislator
  • Works directly with the Minister for Magic and the Wizengamot in regards to drafting, presenting and passing new laws and legislation
  • May be required to review old laws and suggest amendments
  • Works closely with others in the division, particularly the Ministry Jurisprudent and Scrivener
  • Works at the direction of the Wizarding Director of Public Prosecution, Wizengamot Commissioner and Department Head of Magical Law Enforcement as indicated
