Default Transfiguration Lesson: TBA

It’s an ordinary November afternoon at Hogwarts, but there’s nothing ordinary about the setup for today’s transfiguration lesson. The usual student desks are gone, replaced by several wooden workbenches, like one might find in a tool shed or garage. The lack of desks may be the most obvious change, but it’s not the only one. There’s a mysterious large object at the back of the room, covered by a cloth. How does it relate to the lesson? Only time will tell.

Even Professor Carton’s desk looks different today. While it remains in its usual spot in the front left corner of the room, the normally tidy workspace is littered with boxes of varying sizes. THe boxes are full of buttons, pipe cleaners, and assorted sizes of cardboard. Supplies for an art project, perhaps?

The professor himself stands at the front of the room, waiting to welcome the students. “Hello, welcome in!,” he greets each arrival. “As you come in, collect the materials you’ll need today from the boxes on my desk. There’s a list on the board.”

Default Steps 1 to 8!
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Indeed there were so many ways in which the answers to the question could take, and this was highlighted in most that were provided. Jude was inclined to agree fully with Carton: a combo of both methods was the best way to go. ‘Work smart, not hard’ was the saying, yes?

It came as no surprise that they would be building something. Jude’s gaze followed Carton’s in time for the great reveal at the back of the room. Oh! More materials and some equipment! A stool? Hmmm. He thought that this was something he could manage and was quite eager to get started. This eagerness was further fueled by Carton’s demonstration even if the process seemed a tad confusing. Thank goodness for the instructions and diagrams as well!

Time to get to work then!

After collecting the equipment needed, two poles were placed parallel to each other {the boy was grateful the sizes were already worked out}. Using a tape measure, the 8.5 inches from the bottom was measured. Soon each of the two poles had a deep horizontal line marking the measured out length. Jude grabbed a small plank and a nail, eyed the diagram on the board then set the plank and proceeded to hammer it all together. “Malleus!” Tap! They targeted nail embedded itself exactly where it was held. The step was repeated thrice more. More repetition happened but this time with another set of poles, plank and nails.

The leg was flipped over, making the nails facing down. With the measuring tape in hand again, Jude measured seven inches from the bottom. Another deep horizontal line was used to mark the spot. Armed with a medium plank and a nail, said nail was magically hammered in, effectively tacking it to the plank at the top. Then a nail was hammered into the bottom. The entire thing was then rotated so that the side he had been working on faced away from him. The exact steps that had just been completed were repeated.

Who knew making a stool was this complicated?

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon hadn't tried either the magical or muggle ways to build the chair. So he decided to use both, and hope to be good at one of them. It was logical. He grabbed a tape measure and hammer to go along with his wand. The notebook was open again, and he quickly wrote down the instructions. But now it was time to work.

He took two poles, and laid them parallel, using the edge of the workbench to line them up. He took his pencil, and marked 8.5 inches(he measured twice). Then he positioned a little plank between them there, and hammered it in with magic. Or... tried. "Malleus. Malleus? Malleus!" He gave up. See? This is what he meant when he said a hammer was more reliable! He grabbed the hammer, and knocked the nails into the wood himself. Then he did it again with the other sides, sticking to the hammer. Now he had two pieces, which looked mostly the same. They weren't EXACTLY the same, but Brandon tried to ignore that. It bothered him.

Ha had to connect them now. He took one piece, and measured & marked 7 inches. Why was this plank lower? He guessed it was to make sure the nails didn't all hit each other, but he really didn't know. He wrote that down. Then he hammered the plank on the other side. Taking his first piece, he measured 7 inches from the bottom and marked it. He positioned it over the open side of the planks, and hammered in 4 nails to finish off his base. He stood it up.

Here there was a problem. And to Brandon, any problem was a big problem. The Big Problem was that for some reason(imperfect measuring?), the stool was noticeably wobbly. His first thought was to cry, but he had learned never to do that. His second thought was to write the problem down, which he did. And his third thought was to actually fix the problem. Healers had to problem solve a lot. He pretended the stool was a person with one leg much longer than the other. Then he thought about it.

........................................

Taking his wand, he used "diffindo" to very, very carefully slice off a little bit of the stool legs that were put in wrong. Then he sliced a little more, and just a little more, evening and adjusting different legs, until the stool was level. Now it was a slightly shorter stool. But it was stable. He considered this a win! He grabbed the large plank and positioned it over the base, measuring five times this time to make sure there was a 1/2 inch overhang exactly. Feeling confident after his problem-solving, he tried to put in the nails magically. "M... Malleus." THERE. Excited, he hammered in the remaining nails. He did it!!!

"Can we keep these?" he asked, protectively holding onto his new stool. Because Brandon had every intention of keeping his, and he would be upset if he couldn't

Default Steps 9-15!
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jude took a break from this construction. This sort of thing wasn’t what he was best at but he was pretty happy about his work so far. He watched Brandon give a shot at the Hammer Spell, itching to jump in and assist. But his young friend seemed quite determined {even if an actual hammer was used for a bit}. In the end, Brandon was successful though and Jude, of course, was super happy about this fact. “Look at you go! Not bad, Brandon!’’

So…

Did he have the planks attached in the right manner? A quick scan of his handiwork thus far confirmed this. Plus, there were two wooden planks on each side sticking out as Carton had demonstrated earlier. With the nailed wood facing upwards, the tape was used to measure seven inches on both sides. The piece was lined up as neatly and orderly as he could possibly get it to be. Eh… it seemed okay from his point of view. If this wasn’t the case… well… that was a problem for later. With magic, more hammering ensued so that the end of the right plank to the other leg. That step was repeated for the left.

That was one handsome base!

But no more admiring because it needed to be flipped. This was easily done. The larger plank… where wa- there it was! Jude grabbed it to settle it snuggly on to base. The check with the tape told him that there was an inch overhang indeed but this was only after there was some fidgeting done to get the plank in its proper place. Magic was used to drive the nails in as instructed. With that, the mini construction project was over.

A stool!

Well, that wouldn't be the first thing Yukie would think to build if she were lost in the wilderness but hey, it was something to work on. Though she also did not know what she'd do with the stool if they were to bring them back to their dorms.

After watching the professor work, Yukie went ahead to retrieve the equipment she needed and assembled her transfigured materials. She measured two of her poles from the bottom with her tape measure, just as instructed, and marked the spot with a pencil. With a nail and a hammer, because she wanted to go muggle for the meantime, she started hammering one of the small planks. She started carefully, because the thing was wobbly and she was not that confidence with the hammer just yet. It took very long for the first nail to get right through, but nevertheless she was happy that she did it. Now, she was going to work with her spell work. For the next remaining poles, Yukie chose to do things magically. "Malleus!" She said and with each tap of her wand, the nail drove itself into the plank. It was so much easier, and it saved her from making too much noise.

With all that done, Yukie smiled to herself as she turned a finished piece over to measure the seven inches from the bottom. It was seven, right? She looked at the board for confirmation before moving forward and marking with her pencil once again. She then Malleus-ed her nail down the top of the medium plank, and another nail on the bottom. She worked quietly at first, but as she repeated the steps with the left side, she found herself humming to the tune of a Joshua Miller song. There was a lot of measuring and marking going on here, with yet another seven inches on the nailed side upwards. She lined up the leg of her soon-to-be stool to the marksshe made. With more Malleus-hammering, Yukie did that to the open ends of her planks and the leg on both sides, completing her base.

This was a lot of work. She kind of just wanted to get this over with.

The Hufflepuff then flipped the base over so her stool stood on all its four legs. Hey, look at that! She was almost done! Yukie took the large plank and rested it over the base top, checking that each side had the half an inch overhang as instructed. With her remaining transfigured nails, she tapped each of them in place with Malleus at each corner and then at each side.At this point, her humming had ceased and she was chewing the insides of her cheek.

Finished? Finished. The littlest Rasting let out a relieved sigh and half-smiled to herself for a job well done. A nap sounded nice already.

Hope was pleased to be doing another activity in class that seemed familiar to her, though the magic was a little different than she was used to. She hoped she had managed to transfigure her pieces correctly and that they were the right size. So she confidently laid out her poles, but then had a bit of trouble figuring out how to operate the unfamiliar tape measure--it kept slipping from her fingers and disappearing into its casing with an alarming snap! But finally she managed to measure 8.5 inches on each pole.

She used a hammer to set the first plank in place, because she knew how to do that already--her father used to praise her ability to hammer and saw, when she got a chance to help with that, that is. But for the second try, she decided to try to use the magical spell--why else was she in school, after all? She had a few misfiles, not managing to point her wand squarely at the nails, but finally, with a bit of practice, managed to Malleus the second plank in place.

Eventually she got the next set of planks done, measuring carefully each time ("Measure twice, cut once!" her father always said). She alternated between using magic and the hammer to nail, because she wanted to see which one worked better (if either was better, for that matter).

Finally she had the base assembled and set it on its legs--and it sat flat! Elated, she set the large plank on top (that would be the seat, of course) and used the hammer to put a nail in each corner, then magic to put the final nails on the sides. She surveyed her project from all sides--it looked pretty even to her, even the amount of overhang on the seat. Working with your hands was really the most satisfying thing!

Did Maisey catch a little bit of a smile from Professor Carton? Why yes she did, and she could not have been more thrilled. She didn’t know but it was always funny to her to see some professors, especially the more serious ones smiling. Even the smallest of smiles. She also enjoyed listening to the others' answers too. It was like everyone was just so smart. Or they had really good ideas as their answers.

Oh… they were building stools today. How neat. She really hoped that they would be able to keep it when they were finished.

She already had everything she needed laying out in front of her. All she needed was the tape measure and a hammer, just in case she really wanted to do this the magical way she had done it the muggle way several times. She took two poles and moved them closer to her, in front of her on the workbench. Laying them parallel to each other. She took the measuring tape and at 8.5 inches from the bottom, she made a small visible mark. Doing the same with the other pole. Next she picked up one of the small planks and four nails. Placing the plank at the mark she had made on the poles, she lined it up. Using her wand to hammer in the nails to the poles and plank. ”Malleus!” Tapping her wand on the nails one by one until that side was put together.

She took the other two poles, Measured to the correct length, and made a mark there on each of the poles. With the other small plank she nailed the pieces together just as before. She used her wand and said ”Malleus!” and tapped the nails with her wand again until all of the nails were in. Now she had two pieces that looked exactly alike. Following the next part of the instructions, she just about forgot where she was in the instructions but after rereading them she found her place and continued work on the stool. She turned the piece over where the nailed side was facing down.

She then measured 7 inches from the bottom right side of the leg, she made a mark there. She even measured the space between the mark she just made and the small plank she just attached. It was right at an inch and a half. She took the medium sized plank next, lined it up, ”Malleus!” As she tapped the nail at the top with her wand. With another ”Malleus!” she tapped the nails again this time at the bottom. She repeated the process of steps 6 and 7 to the other piece.

She faced the leg up so the nailed sides were up. She took the measuring tape again and measured 7 inches from the bottom and marked the spot. She lined up the marks on the left and right with the planks. Then she nailed everything together and created the base. She stood the stool up on the workbench, placed the large plank on top of the base. She checked the overhang to make sure it was even and at the half inch mark, once she decided that everything was straight and even she took the last of her nails and nailed them into all four corners and one at each side.

Finally she was done, and feeling quite proud of herself.

Default Class dismissed!
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Norman roamed the room as the students set to work, taking care not to move too close to anyone’s workbench and disturb their work. Those stools took up quite a bit of space! His bluish-green eyes scanned the area as he went, closely monitoring the students’ progress. So far, so good. It looked like everyone was correctly following the steps without his help.

Fox’s question got a nod in reply as he passed. “Yes,” he said. He had intended to make that announcement at the end of class, but he supposed doing it now would save him the trouble of repeating it later. Raising his voice so the rest of the class could hear him, he added, “These stools are yours to keep.”

Several minutes later, Norman peeked at his watch to see that the class time was running out. Reversing his course, he made his way back to the front of the room. “Right, that’s all the time we have for today,” he announced, peering around the room one last time. He was pleased to see that so many students had successfully built their stools! “If you didn’t finish, you may take your supplies with you to do so on your own time. Your homework: try out your new stool, and see how it compares to a stool built the non-magical way. Write down your observations. Class dismissed!”

OOC: That’s all, folks! Thanks for coming! I’ll leave the thread open for another 10 HOURS for those who want to catch/finish up or post their students leaving.

Okay... so this seemed easy enough. They were going to be using their transfigured pieces to put them together to make a stool. Only now that Apollo was looking at the pieces he realized he hadn't transfigured enough poles or planks. He had the large plank that he could only assume to be the 'seat'. "Palus" he said, turning three more of the pipe cleaners into poles.

And he had two differently sized planks in addition to the seat. So that meant - he needed two more of those sizes? "Temran Madera". Okay so he had all the pieces now time to put them together. Carefully laying two poles beside each other, he marked one at 8.5 inches, but carelessly not realizing that they weren't even with each other (they were about an inch off), he marked the other one at only 7.5inches. One small plank and hammered into the pole and then repeated it.

When Carton called that they were out of time, Apollo stared at his half completed stool and decided to work quicker. Which also meant more careless mistakes. Things were looking quite off kilter with him accidentally placing two of the same sized planks next to each other instead of opposite. Somehow he was still able to get the nails hammered in but this wasn't lined up the way things were supposed to be. And considering one of the holes was marked lower, well this did not look symmetrical at all. Hammer.... hammer... Apollo kept going, determined to finish and oblivious to his mistakes (for now). Okay time to put the large plank on top which was when he realized how very off the stool was. OKAY he would NOT be going to magical carpentry.

"Er... Professor, I think I'm going to need to start over. Could I maybe take some extra of the original supplies and work on this later?" Perhaps when he wasn't so rushed he'd properly line things up. Although he supposed he could maybe use reparifarge, but he wasn't sure how that would work with the nailed in pieces. So maybe best to just start completely from scratch.

So much for this being a simple stool.

Norman stood beside the door, watching the students exit. An unexpected voice caused his head to turn in the direction of the sound to face Adara-Stark. "Yes, take whatever you need," he replied, gesturing toward the boxes. "The boxes are on the floor beside my desk."

He had more than enough to spare, and he had to admire the boy's initiative in starting over from scratch on his own time. "Good afternoon. Mr. Adara-Stark."

OOC: I have to close the lesson now, but feel free to headcanon that your student took some materials to work on if you wish.
