Default Exercise Room

EXERCISE ROOM
Active, hectic job or not, a little exercise never hurt anyone. In fact, in Law Enforcement, you're expected to be in good shape, especially those out in the field apprehending bad guys as part of their contribution to keeping the wizarding world safe. This room has everything you could possibly need for a good workout. There are a number of stationary bikes, treadmills, ellipticals and weight lifting benches with different sets of weights close by. A punching bag hangs in one corner, and mats are laid out throughout the room.

Don't get dehydrated! There's a watercooler that puts out nice cool water anytime you need it. There's also a shelf full of towels and a bin for you to dispose of the towels.

Spar with a partner or take some time to blow off some steam before you head into that interrogation. Just don't overdo it.

What did you do when you had a mountain of paperwork to get through? For Frankie Paton, the temporary solution was to leave it sitting on his desk and wander off to the exercise room. While he knew that the paper work would need to get filled out and accounted for, now just wasn't the time for it. Being the overly active person that he was, he was not in the mood to just sit still in one spot for what was bound to be a lengthy period of time.

After changing into workout clothes, the Auror made his way into the room and was a bit surprised to see it empty. Though he was a bit taken aback, there were no complaints from him. He really didn't mind as it would allow him to take up as much space as he wanted and jump from machine to machine without having to wait on anyone.

So there he was, minding his own business as he did some stretches and got on one of the treadmills. Anything and everything but that paperwork was fluttering about his mind.

Scottie just needed to like...not focus on work for a second. He was still bitter...every day. It was tiring being bitter every day, and he still couldn't face his boss or even bring himself to talk to him about how UNHAPPY and irritated he was with his position. He hadn't even told his father he had been hired because he couldn't let him know he had been hired for security. Not that he expected much - he was fresh out of Uni and had been working with a PI agency for a year now, and he had never wanted to be a big shot like his father, THE WES FERGUSON. But he had at least aimed higher than security, a job that you didn't even NEED TO GRADUATE HOGWARTS TO GET. Well, technically. His hard work - his good grades, constantly doing above and beyond in his job and internships - it seemed all for nothing. His brother could have gotten this job, and he very much regretted applying for the Ministry.

It was...a lot. He couldn't turn DOWN a position...he had to get his nose in SOMEHOW. So he'd see how long he could handle the position he just...had no passion for.

Okay.

Hopefully no one's here... Scottie was a scrawny bloke, and he worked out to maintain fitness alone and not for strength. Unfortunately for him, though, someone was here. Ugh. A colleague. He couldn't walk out now - if the guy noticed him, it would be awkward. So...

Scottie just sort of...milled around the treadmills as if he were trying REALLY hard to discern which one would serve his purposes yet. Should he say hello? Should he not?

Whatever.

At first his pace on the treadmill was slow, but as every few minutes went by it got gradually faster. It definitely wasn't full speed, but it was enough to make his heart start pounding and cause little beads of sweat to take form. This he paid no mind to; it was expected when one worked out indoors opposed to going for a run in Britain's cold winter, which was something he was known to do from time to time.

He was beginning his cool-down on the treadmill and now pacing himself at a steady jog when another body joined him in the room. Naturally, his Auror instincts had kicked in and he side-eyed the man before fully turning his head toward him. He couldn't pin a name to the scrawny fellow, so Frankie figured he must've been new. He Had to have been given the way he was looking at the treadmills.

"I would recommend having a go at this one," he said, pointing a thumb at the machine to his right. "That one," -- he pointed to the treadmill at his left -- "tends to have a mind of its own."

He didn't need to wait long before the other man was speaking, which was good considering how awkward Scottie felt. He just nodded as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Mind of its own, eh?" he asked as he eyed it before stepping onto the other one. "This reminds me why I prefer to just walk...on my own...treadmills can be dangerous," he began to jog at a low, steady pace, nothing tiring.

"I'm Scott, by the way. Scott Ferguson,"
he smiled a small, passionless sort of smile as he gave the man a little wave. "New here at the MLE." And he was pretty anti-social, so it made sense he hardly knew any of his coworkers. He couldn't even remember the names of his fellow security colleagues. That was how checked out he felt.

The blond carried on his his job while the other man listened to his advice and stepped onto the treadmill to his right. A wise decision that was, considering the one to his left was rather temperamental -- it would very quickly have proven the opinion of treadmills being dangerous. "Well, good thing I was here to warn you about that one," he stated, giving a little nod in the direction of the unused machine. "It likes to stop abruptly for no apparent reason. Learned that the hard way my first year here."

Another nod followed when the fellow introduced himself. Frankie figured that Scott was new, considering he didn't recognize him. Even though the name Ferguson sort of rang a bell, he couldn't quite put a finger on it. Law Enforcement was a big department, so he couldn't exactly say that he knew everyone that worked there.

"Frankie Paton," he replied. "Which branch of MLE are you?" The lad definitely wasn't an Auror.

The treadmill was going at a steady pace, and he felt himself sink into rhythm almost immediately. It was an easy enough activity that he felt he could get used to this sort of working out...maybe. Perhaps he and his twin could sign up for a gym membership - OOOH! They could just buy the ONE and share it since they were twins! None of the gym people would know the wiser!

Sometimes, he could be brilliant.

"Yikes...that's not good. No one's tried to replace it? Surely it's in the MLE's budget...right?" he wrinkled his forehead as he furrowed his eyebrows. It was just a TREADMILL?

Okay.

OKAY?

Was it time to lie? Or just...you know, shade the truth, as Logan liked to say. "I am....you know, one of the non-auror-y branches," he said coolly, looking away from Frankie Paton and stared straight ahead. "You could call me an assistant...to....you know, safety."

A chuckle of sorts escaped his mouth when Scott questioned why the machine hadn't been replaced and if the department had the budget to fix it. "Bigger fish to fry, I'spose," he replied with a slight shrug. "And considering the nature of this department, practicing constant vigilance is very much a thing." It was good practical lesson, if you will, for the YATIs. As for everyone else, well, learning about the machine's wonkiness without warning was just unfortunate.

Scott's reaction and the way he responded to his question did not go unnoticed. It was ... anything put straightforward for such a simple question. 'Non-Auror-y branches.' 'Assistant ... to ... you know, safety.' Blue eyes glanced over at the man while he started straight ahead. Frankie didn't question him any further about his specific role within the department. The response along made him assume the lad was part of Ministry Security, maybe MLES.

"And how are you enjoying it? Working at the Ministry?"

She tried to take as many patrols that took her outside of the Ministry as possible, but inevitably, there were times where paperwork at the office had to be done. Penelope had never been a fan of it - was anyone really? - but she hated it even more with the new changes to the Ministry. Every time she had to listen to that recording of their stupid mantra in the atrium and ignore those obnoxious tapestries of Grindelwald, she felt like she was going to lose it.

But she couldn't. Not when she was still unable to check on her daughter at Hogwarts. The mysterious new "rigorous curriculum" had been odd before, but now it was suspicious. It was infuriating. If this Neo Alliance could takeover the Ministry from within, then...

She had no way of knowing. Maybe there was a slim chance that everyone at Hogwarts was safe. Maybe Headmaster Trent had seen the signs and closed off the school to keep the Ministry out.

But even if she wanted to believe that, she didn't. This wasn't a glass-half-full situation. All the conclusions that seemed likely to her were...not good.

And so she often found herself here. She normally preferred keeping her exercise routines at home, but it was more important than ever to get her anger and frustration out as soon as possible. She couldn't afford to wind up in the holding cells like Primeaux. Or worse.

After going through a few warm ups and wrapping her hands, she got to work with her personal favorite exercise - the punching bag.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Gabriel wasn't an idiot, he knew something weird was going on at the Ministry. He understood that people were upset, not fully why except maybe...his sister had said something before she left about prejudice about magical blood vs non-magical blood. And he supposed prejudice was bad, in general, when it was about something someone had no control over.

But...he was not really affected, so it was easy to forget about, as long as he didn't look up at those tapestries hanging everywhere on the days when he did actually go into the Ministry.

Days like today. Because he needed to practice ~punching things~ and he didn't have a punching bag in his flat. So here he was, and...oh, one of the Real Aurors was in here? Gabriel hesitated in the doorway of the exercise room, then proceeded in. "Hello," he said quietly, redirecting himself to a stationary bike instead since she was occupying the punching bag.

She was finishing up another set of reps when someone else entered the room. One of last year's newest group of YATI.

"Melo," Penelope said, giving him a nod in greeting. She didn't know him well, but he seemed decent enough from what she could tell last year. 'Course, last year had been far different than this one. Or it had seemed that way, until this year revealed that those people were lurking in the shadows the whole time. And so people who might have seemed decent last year had revealed that they weren't in reality.

Hard to tell if that applied to him yet. He didn't seem to bask in the glory of the so-called "greater good," so either he was good at hiding it, or he actually was decent in her eyes.

Time would tell.

She didn't like this though, doubting her colleagues. Despite the whole constant vigilance and wariness that came with this career, the people in her department were supposed to be people she could trust. Yet another thing to add to her ever growing list of reasons why the new regime was terrible.

With that thought, she got back into another set of reps, cross punching the bag.

Gabriel didn't usually like to disrupt others' exercising. It was one of those things where, sometimes he could talk and exercise at the same time, but he had to be mentally prepared for it. So he assumed others felt the same. And today he had not mentally prepared to talk and exercise at the same time. But...he also hadn't mentally prepared to ride a stationary bike, so he whirled the machine for a few minutes in silence after the Real Auror--Grimm? Was that her name? He thought so.

But then he stopped spinning, and glanced in the direction of the Auror and the punching bag whilst he worked up the courage to actually ask his question. It was a little nerve-wracking, as he didn't want to become a punching bag, literally or metaphorically.

"Excuse me, I'm sorry to interrupt--" he began, still sitting on the stationary bike with one leg on the pedal and the other dangling awkwardly. "Is, is it always like this? With everyone on edge? And angry?" He hadn't forgotten the hullabaloo at the gala.

He had only been in London for a little over a year, after all. Maybe there was always this...uncomfortableness in a society that lived so closely with Muggles. He knew his grandparents hadn't really liked Muggles, they'd even wanted his family to disown his older brother, but only a very small percent of his life had been spent in cities with large Muggle populations. He did not quite understand why some wizards didn't like them.

Another set complete... And he was speaking again.

Luckily, the exercise had been working for her. Any earlier, and Penelope knew she wouldn't have been able to tolerate a conversation, especially one leading to the very topic she'd been angry about. The anger was still there, but more at a simmer now, more manageable, no longer threatening to make her explode at the next person unfortunate enough to talk to her.

She shook her head. "No, this is new. It's not supposed to be like this." 'Course, things weren't always sunshine and rainbows either, especially in the MLE department, but all of this tension, this anger... Penelope hadn't felt it in a long time. It shouldn't have been coming from her place of work, of all places.

Not...not supposed to be like this? What did that mean? Gabriel frowned at the woman. Diid she mean...people weren't supposed to be upset? That was good? He thought? The twenty-one-year-old was deeply confused, though. If everyone being upset was new, what had triggered that? Just....so much confusion for this Castelobruxo graduate. Was it because he'd failed history? He was pretty sure it was because he had failed history.

"Has everyone been secretly given a potion or something?" he asked. What was the opposite of the draught of peace? It seemed like that was the problem. Just give everyone some Draught of Peace, everyone would relax, and things would be normal again.

Right?

Or...he thought again about some of the weird things, with the coffee cart, with those weird banners everywhere. Maybe he needed to do some research on whoever that man on the banners was. He pulled his feet onto the pedals of the bike again and started spinning the "wheels" as quietly as he could, still looking thoughtfully at the Auror. Aurors were smart. Surely she could explain what the problem was. "Why do you think things changed?" he asked, blissfully unaware of any risk to the questions he was asking.

His responses were...interesting. Penelope found it odd that he didn't seem to know, and it occurred to her that he could be playing dumb to get her to say something incriminating.

But she also wasn't convinced that that was the case either. He seemed genuine enough. Maybe it was possible he truly didn't know. Maybe he hadn't experienced wizards being cruel to non-magical people and those related to them. Maybe he hadn't paid attention in history class not that she could fault him for that one because she hadn't either, ahem.

Or maybe he was just a good actor. Young, maybe, but she never liked when people underestimated the younger ones.

"No, no potions involved." Actually... Well, that was a thought she would file away for another time. "Things changed because the people in charge now decided they would. And the rest of us... We didn't see them pulling the strings until now. And that causes tension." Especially considering what they were wanting to change, but...she was trying to choose her words carefully.

Gabriel was not playing dumb on purpose. He did, however, like to think he was a good actor. They'd done that training in disguises, right? You had to be a pretty decent actor do get away with a disguise. He really hoped he'd be able to flex these imaginary acting skills in the field someday. Like an undercover gig or something.

But, not right now. No acting today.

No? She didn't like his Anxiety Elixir idea? Paranoia Potion? It was too bad he wasn't a potioneer, he would have created some excellent names for new brews.

He was quiet for a moment as he kept riding that stationary bike, getting nowhere with either his legs or his train of thought, for all the effort he put in. The people in charge changed things. And everyone else was surprised, and that's why everyone was upset. Huh. He frowned while he thought about that. He knew from experience that some people didn't like surprises, so her explanation...logically made sense. It still seemed like there was more to it than that, but what did he know? His sister had finally ended her visit, so his external conscience was gone.

Change was good, though. Change meant you were alive. So. People were surprised by the change, and were just...adjusting. He could live with that explanation. Gabriel nodded slightly, as in a silent acknowledgment of Auror Grimm's response. Then a verbal acknowledgment, too. "Thank you, ma'am."

She probably ought to be glad that her answer seemed to suffice for him and she was ignoring his use of "ma'am" because it made her feel old, but to her it just...wasn't enough. Not at all. She wanted to explain all of it. Disguises and such were part of the job, but in general, Penelope considered herself an honest person, and she didn't like dancing around the truth. Sometimes it was necessary, obviously. But it didn't mean she had to enjoy it.

Maybe she could still do something though. It was imperative to get to know her colleagues, especially the newer ones, now more than ever. Maybe she could take a step toward that today.

"Of course," she replied with a nod. "And if you have any further questions, I usually stop by Espresso Patronum in Diagon Alley after work, if you'd ever like to join me. Their coffee is better than the stuff they serve here." Though she actually did like the stuff they served in the atrium too, at least before all of THIS. She didn't know if they'd turn her away like she had seen happen to others, but she wasn't going to bother wasting her time to find out. Not like she'd be able to trust anything they gave her anyway.

Gabriel called all of his superiors things like ma'am unless they specified otherwise, regardless of age. Given his own delayed start into the YATI program, it was entirely possible for there to be a Junior Auror around his own age...who he would also call ma'am in this situation. All this to say, his intent was not to make Penelope feel old, but rather, respected.

And he definitely respected her choice of café.

"Yes, I like that place," he said with a firm nod. He actually recommended Espresso Patronum himself, to anyone newer to London than he was. Which was not a lot of people. But he'd gladly get coffee and ask more questions. He always had questions. Though, not always relevant ones. It would definitely be easier to have a conversation not sitting on this stationary bike. He could almost pick up on the hint that she wanted to talk away from the Ministry. Because...she didn't want the people who pulled the strings to hear? Or something like that.

Though he doubted the Minister of Magic--that was who pulled the strings, right?--had time to eavesdrop on two law enforcement employees exercising. He liked the excuse for coffee, if nothing else.

Gabriel hopped off the stationary bike. "I should get going," he said. "Lots of training to do, you know." Plus. He had come for the punching bag, not the bike.

Ah, good, he already had good taste in coffee. That was a point in his favor then, in her opinion. She didn't know much about him yet, but at least there was that.

And then he was getting up to leave for training, and...yeah, maybe it was about time for Penelope to get back to her paperwork too. She'd spent enough energy in here; she could probably handle forcing herself to finish up the boring stuff now. "'Course." She nodded. "Good luck out there."
