Default St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries

To enter the premises of St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, one need only find a large, old-fashioned, red brick department store called Purge and Dowse Ltd. in Muggle London and step through the glass display window featuring a dummy modelling a green dress. Upon stepping through the threshold, the world you can from will have disappeared and you will find yourself in the crowded reception area that doubles as a visitors' entrance and an emergency room waiting area. There you need to speak to the Welcome Witch or wait for a Healer to collect you.

Past the reception desk and through a set of double doors lies the gateway to the rest of the hospital. The ground floor, lit by floating candles in crystal bubbles, is the Artefact Accidents corridor where the Healers deals with cauldron explosions, wands backfiring, broom crashes, etc. At the end of the corridor is another set of double doors, which beyond is a staircase that provides access to the remaining floors -- first floor, Creature-Induced Injuries; second floor, Magical Bugs and Diseases; third floor, Potions and Plant Poisoning; and fourth floor, Spell Damage.

Each floor contains a fair amount of rooms, long-term wards, and portraits. There is also bound to be a wandering patient or two. The fifth floor of the hospital, however, is less chaotic and provides a tearoom for visitors to relax as well as a shop that sells cards, balloons, and other gifts. Also located on this floor is the Midwife/Infant Care wing, a Healer break room (with sleep pods and locker rooms), and the administration offices.

Default Post-war - for Ally & Rachie
Bathes in Maple Syrup | Dancing Lobster | Mrs. Charlie Weasley | Seneca's Beard | That's So Fetch

The war had left Frankie in quite a state. War wasn't pretty, and being an Auror after all these years had been just a taste of what to expect. He knew what was at risk by rushing off to battle. Cuts, bruises, and other battle wounds were to be expected, just like with his day-to-day work bringing dark wizards to justice. What he didn't expect, however, was needing to spend days at the hospital.

How long had he been in this particular bed? Nearly a week now? The days at this point had started blurring together. In his honest opinion, he didn't feel like he needed to be here this long. One day would have been enough. He had been tempted to sneak out and get back to his family and work, but the blond knew he would never hear the end of it if he snuck out on his healer mother's watch.

Deep down, though, he knew staying at the hospital was for his benefit. He had been badly cursed. Fortunately it had been stopped before it had spread throughout the rest of his body, though the arm where it had started had gotten the worst of it. It had healed significantly over the past few days; it still burned a little, but it was bearable.

Another benefit to being at the hospital was getting as much pudding as he wanted. Today might very likely be discharge day, so he was currently sitting up in bed and helping himself to as much pudding as he could while he waited.

The war had been more than what Hady expected. Never in her life had she thought she would ever be involved in one, especially willingly. Let alone at Hogwarts. Not when she had family there. It had been a nightmare come true.

Holding onto her siblings and cousins when all had been said and done, that's what it had all been for. How her father had been able to let them all remain there was beyond her but that man was tough. Who was even stronger where the kids. The way they had all stuck together and taken care of one another, she was so proud. All she could hope for them was that they didn't completely lose who they were because of all of this but only time would be able to answer that for them.

Unfortunately or perhaps fortunately for Frankie, Hady couldn't be at his side at Mungo's every second of everyday. Not only did she have a job that required a fair amount of her attention but they also had four children at home. Children that demanded to know when their father was going to come home and no matter what she told them, didn't work. Somehow though she always found a way to stop in everyday, today being no different.

"You act like you've never had pudding before," the brunette laughed as she walked into the room, shaking her upon seeing Frankie eating as always.

The first two weeks Charles Hollingberry had been admitted to St. Mungo's following his duel with Lucien had been ones spent unconscious. Whether this was out of medical necessity or his own body simply needing to shut down and hibernate for a while remained unknown to him. One of the healers had surely given him the full run down and lengthy analysis of just what was what, but Charles had hardly paid it much attention. He had full faith and confidence that the healers here at St. Mungo's would take care of his physical needs and have him back on his feet as soon as possible. Only going through the motions during his first week awake, Charles had begun striking up conversations and inserting the occasional grandpa joke here and there as an attempt to lighten spirits and let those assigned to him know that they were doing a fine job. And while his limb mended and he regained control and functionality to his own body, the wounds inwards (those deep metaphorical ones) struggled to mend.

Holding his grandchildren again had provided a taste of dittany to his spirit, but the weight of the rest of the wizarding world still burdened his shoulders. Particularly when he had been presented a recording of the broadcast his Acting Minister had produced. He...would have a sit down to discuss public speaking tactics and form at a later date. It was a good thing Charles had been unconscious after an intensive examination and rehabilitation session and therefore missed hearing the broadcast live. Fond of Fletcher as he was, there were certain moments during the broadcast that may have given Charles a heartattack. Then again, it reminded him of his own son when backed into a corner and forced into a responsibility they did not feel ready for. The lack of polish and candidness reflected a certain fear...and Charles respected Fletcher for stepping into this with stride.

Which only added to the guilt that burdened the Minister. Once again, when his wizarding UK was in dire need, Charles could not deliver. Yes, he had been praised for the duel...but Charles hardly felt it a victory. Lucien's demise had not been his intent and it had been an accident rather than a purposeful act. Then there was the fact that...he had never himself killed another and he felt a horrible tear in his soul because of it, guise of self defense be damned.

Out of bed and taking his 10 am walk around his private room, Charles stopped by the window to look out at the dreary weather. Visiting hours would be starting now and Charles was rather looking forward to doing something other than laying in bed 'taking it easy' and filling out the Prophet's crossword puzzle.

Kaiser's days were rough, his nights were worse, and things weren't getting any easier. Also rough? These visits. With Mr Hollingberry in St Mungo's (and guess who was blaming himself for that) avoiding him was that much easier (and guess who felt even worse for considering the Minister's need to be in hospital a good thing), so back on Level One it was mostly Mr Fletcher that Kaiser had to focus on keeping his distance from. Not literally, that was near impossible (but guess who still tried) now that he had been diverted to helping the Acting Minister instead of the Actual Minister, but other kinds of distance. Not even necessarily because he felt directly responsible for all that had happened, though that was part of it, but... No, it didn't matter. There were just... things. Reasons. Things and reasons that didn't matter.

It would have been the same with Mr Hollingberry if he were around, but instead they just had these visits, where Kaiser actively came to him. Honestly, it was almost cruel, but he still did it. Part of work, you know, and Kaiser really was just trying to throw himself into completing as many tasks as possible so he didn't have to think or feel anymore, despite knowing how risky it would be to overwork himself. Maybe he sort of wanted to see Mr Hollingberry too, just as much as he didn't, just like that was exactly the situation with Mr Fletcher. Merlin. His head hurt. Constantly.

Kaiser was, at least, skilled at keeping up appearances and acting a-okay on the job, functional and functioning, all professional all the time. Outside of work was a little more patchy, but he tried not to think too much about that when he didn't have to.

He was here to see Mr Hollingberry for work reasons, was the point; the personal assistant had become the personal owl, and today that owl brought a file with a list of detailed updates from Level One, plus other information for the Minister to cast his eye over, make comments on, that sort of thing. Could have used a real owl, maybe, but some of this stuff was a bit too sensitive to be entrusted to a bird beak. Kaiser supposed he was marginally more reliable than a bird - on his good days - so here he was.

After pausing for a long moment outside the hospital room to gear himself up, Kaiser steeled himself and knocked on the door, then poked his head around it. "Mr Hollingberry, sir," he said, finding the man in question over by the window. "Are you okay to meet today?" Please say no. Please say no. Please say yes.

Deep in thought and nostalgia, Charles watched as the rain trickled down the glass and pooled in the pavement outside. All the water pitter pattering on the pavement and grass reminded him of the walks he would take with his grandson in their wellies. That little hand in his, they would search the ground for any and all earthworms who had wiggled their way on to the pavement and roads so that they could 'rescue' them and return them to the soil. Of course, his little curious and resourceful beansprout would pocket a few of them to keep for himself. Even at age three, his grandson was already thinking about his own potions stores. He couldn't help but wonder when he would get to take those same walks with his first great grandchildren.

Soon? Soon would be good. Charles, as it turns out, was not getting any younger.

Hearing the door creak open (was it time for his medication already?), Charles averted his attention from the illusion his memory had created outside and to the young man standing in the door. Impeccable timing, considering his own train of thoughts. "Kaiser," he greeted, his expression smile warming instantly and eyes softening. "I am always okay with meeting if it means the pleasure of your company." It would always be yes for you, Kaiser

Moving away from the window, Charles moved to the little kettle and filled it with water. "We can share a spot of tea," he chuckled. "...and I'll see if I can use my sway as Minister to get us some biscuits."

Assuming he would remain Minister after all this was over.

Kaiser smiled at that, and entered the room proper. "I don't know about pleasure, sir." Okay, so he had a tendency to veer sharply towards self-deprecation sometimes, but he wasn't referring to the quality of his own company right now, per se. This time it really was just a stab at humour, with an allusion to the wake of the Neo-Alliance... situation.

That was his story, at least, and he was sticking to it.

Tea, though. Kaiser looked anywhere but directly at the kettle, and nodded. Didn't say anything. He'd known about the tea. Guessed, really, and not entirely correctly, but close enough. Shared his suspicions with the Order, even, but hadn't noticed soon enough for them to be able to do anything about it. Why he'd not been fired for that yet was beyond him, unless Mr Fletcher was simply waiting for him to do the decent thing and quit of his own accord, without actually telling him as much other than in subtle, cryptic hints. These thoughts had been returning to Kaiser over and over and over. And over. And over and over.

And over and over and over again. And yet he'd still not done it, because he'd never been good at doing the decent thing.

Kaiser was still stood just inside the door, not yet having stepped in any further. "Door open or closed, Mr Hollingberry?" He asked this question every time they met, without fail. Often without thinking, too; after what he'd let happen had happened with the Rosier woman behind closed doors, it was the natural thing to ask, even though Ch-... Mr Hollingberry generally seemed relatively comfortable around him. Kaiser just wanted him to stay comfortable, and happy, and healthy, and alive. That was all.

A grin are on his face and his blue eyes opened, however, when the sweet voice of his wife sounded.

"Doctor's orders," he replied a nonchalant shrug of his shoulders. The shrug didn't go without consequence as an annoying stinging sensation surged throughout his arm. The blond couldn't help but wince ever so slightly, but the expression lasted for mere seconds. He shoved another spoonful into his mouth, the plate in his hand now empty.

"Plus, you know, it's basically an all-you-can-eat buffet here. The perks of having a healer for a mum." The empty plate was simply set aside as he busied himself with grabbing another that was waiting for him on the bedside table. A vase of flowers and a picture of the family caught his eye before he was back to facing Hady, a different plate at hand. "Everyone ready for me to come home?"

Without hesitation, he then scooped up a bit of dessert into his mouth. As he chewed, he nodded toward his plate. "Want some?" War had not impacted him enough to forget his manners.

"Is that so? Do those orders carry over to when we get home as well because if they do we may need to stop at the store and pick up quite a lot of pudding." This was said with a hint of playfulness as she hoped the husband wouldn't take her up on this. For if he did, they would be needing a whole LOT of pudding.

Hadleigh laughed softly. "In other words, you're being spoiled. Yes, I know. You've eaten nothing but pudding everyday you've been here." She smirked at him. This wasn't at all true, she knew very well that he ate real meals and was very taken care of exceptional well here thanks to his mum being a healer but that didn't stop her from worrying anyhow.

"They are. The house is all clean or at least is was when I left." Can't say for sure if it will still be that way once they return home. As for the offered pudding, Hady shook her head. "No thanks, I can't be depriving a healing man of his recovery food now, can I?" Hady winked at him teasingly.

Unaware of the current depths to his personal assistant's self deprecation, Charles chuckled warmly in such a way that his nose seemed to turn into a ripe cherry at the young man's response. "Always our own harshest critics," he mused, though there was a heaviness to his tone that may not have been their prior to his battle with Lucien. Prior to...all of this. "A cruel sort of luck that evaluation is not entirely for us to decide." His eyes seemed to compassionately hug Kaiser in the way they looked at him.

Or perhaps the man of advanced years simply yearned for a hug himself.

Moving about with a bit of a limp, though one not nearly as prominent as it had been last week or the week before. Three weeks ago he had been almost exclusively bedridden, so Charles was pleased with this progress for what it was. The railings and bars positioned purposefully in the room, along with the furniture, assisted with any strain that came to pass. Like right ow when he paused to rest against the coffee table after setting two cups for their tea upon it. "Door closed," he nodded with another smile. "The healers know how to knock or make use of the intercom should they need to enter."

Another breath and the Minister was hobbling the rest of the way back to the kettle to check on it. "How have you been, my boy?" he inquired while patting his pockets for his spectacles before he remembered they were hanging around his neck and slipped them on so he could sort out from the little menu which number he needed to dial to get in touch with one of the welcome witches for some biscuits.

Kaiser had to nod; cruel luck was right. More cruel than luck, because he always felt that nobody else was nearly as harsh on him as they ought to be, while at the same time he put so much effort into keeping anyone from seeing for themselves exactly why he deserved it. He was aware of the contradiction, had always hated it, yet had never wanted to do anything about it. The evidence against him was forever piling up.

Another thing he had to do? Look away. Again. Kaiser could not look compassion in the eye; honestly he may as well just never look at Charles again for the rest of eternity.

Mr Hollingberry. Not Charles. Mr Hollingberry.

After shutting the door so it closed with a soft click, Kaiser finally headed for the chairs they'd occupied for these visits a number of times before. "Ah..." Question, he'd been asked a question, and it took Kaiser a moment to register the words, and then find an answer for them. "Fine." Oh yes. Great. Superb answer. Really worth the delay. "And you, sir? You're moving around better now, yes?" Not nearly as well as he had when he'd first met him, but... same spiral, different day. Kaiser set the file down on the edge of the coffee table for when Mr Hollingberry was ready for it, then straightened and looked back his way, unwilling to sit down just yet. It occurred to him that, being Mr Hollingberry's personal assistant, he should be doing all of this tea business. It didn't feel right when it was the other way around.

Anyone who knew Charles knew that subtle was not something that he did...and that included his little chat with the Welcome Witch and his request of biscuits. A simply little tin would hardly suffice, naturally, and thus he had selected the basket option that included no less than four dozen cookies. Something he was aware Kaiser likely overheard before he hung up the little room phone. That is assuming that the young man was not too consumed by his own thoughts and they not being loud enough to drown other sounds out.

Hardly in Minister mode at this point, Charles had slipped into that grandfather role as he returned his attention to the kettle and served the tea. Being a grandfather was something he was confident in, a certainty that he would not fail in that role. If his grandson could claim to despise him and then come to forgive him, then he was truly set for life. Was it too soon to start hinting about great grandchildren? He probably should not push his luck.

Knees creaking a bit as he sat, Charles looked over the rim of his glasses at the still vacant seat opposite him and pursed his lips for a moment. Ultimately he drew no further attention to the situation and simply reached for the file which he casually leafed through for a few seconds...but it soon returned to the table as well. Tea, biscuits, and a chat first.

"Your head is well?" he asked pointedly but gently. He was not trying to fuss over the young man, but that image from his office was scorched into his memory. Impossible to forget. "Physically I am making great progress," he nodded with a smile, now leaning forward again to grab his tea and lightly blew over the amber surface of the hug in a cup. "The rest will --- COME IN!" The knock that had interrupted the man's thought was the delightful Welcome Witch with that basket of biscuits. Not lingering long, she quickly set it on the table with a somewhat star struck look towards the Minister before squeaking a 'please enjoy' before scampering back out. Charles simply smiled and gestured again to the seat opposite him for Kaiser to please sit. "Don't fret about the volume. I hardly expect us both to finish all these off. Thought you might like to take some back home to that precious little bean Elio and ray of sunshine Candela."

Being a grandfather meant you spoiled your family, did you know?

Bit more color to his cheeks, Charles leaned forward and plucked a biscuit with a bit of raspberry jam and powdered sugar on top to nibble on between sips of tea.

"It's..." For a moment, Kaiser considered lying, and may well have done if Mr Hollingberry was not already as aware of the situation as he was. Kaiser had been in this very hospital at the same time as him for a while, and of course the Minister had been... present, when it happened. In a sense. After a fashion. "It will take some time, they tell me. I was still, ah... recovering, before, and now it..." They needn't get into the details. "It's fine, really."

It would have been difficult to miss the implication in Mr Hollingberry's words, or rather, what he didn't exactly say. Kaiser didn't expect that the Minister's mental - emotional, whatever they called it - recovery would be any easier or faster, but the reminder was nevertheless... uncomfortable. He tried not to make his discomfort all that obvious as he finally sat down, once they were alone again, but the thought kept tumbling around, demanding to be acknowledged, so he kept acknowledging it.

"Thank you, sir." Candela - ray of sunshine was right, too bright and warm for someone like him - no doubt would be overjoyed by the treat, and especially given where it came from. Kaiser wasn't even sure Elio was supposed to have this sort of thing, but was reluctant to make it so obvious to Mr Hollingberry that he still didn't have a clue what he was doing as a... parent... type person. Mr Hollingberry knew, at any rate; he knew this sort of thing much better than Kaiser did. "Maybe I can bring Elio to see you, if that would be okay." He picked up a biscuit for himself, turned it over in his fingers.

Home. That's how people often referred to the flat. 'Are you going home?' 'Take some back home.' 'Let's go home.' 'You should be set to have him home very soon.' Kaiser had still not managed to say it, but not because it didn't feel like his own space, and not because of that whole... 'home is other people' thing either. He just couldn't bring himself to use such a word with so much weight behind it, and didn't think he ever would. Some words held so much power; it was almost frightening, at times, just the idea of putting them out into the world.

That thought instilled a sudden impulse in Kaiser that was utterly impossible to ignore. He seized on it, acutely aware of exactly how much he was likely to regret it later. That part was always easiest to ignore. "Can I say something, sir? It's important."

It was fine. Strapping young men all too often struggled with acknowledging when they were not fine and had even more difficulty with accepting help. He ought to know, he was one of those several eons ago. "...and now being struck with Dark magic has aggravated the condition and cause a few set backs in your healing process," he nodded, feeling those were safe assumptions to have considering what he did know about Dark magic and his own first aid experience. Which, granted, was mostly limited to scraped knees and bumps of the head on the kitchen table...but he had raised four children of his own and three of them boys. "In any case, it is good to see you on the mend, my boy."

Charles was able to smile often these days, even if those smiles may not always reach his eyes nor bring out his signature twinkle...but the prospect of seeing one of his work grandchildren managed to do the trick. "That would be an absolute delight," he beamed, chest puffing out a bit. "You know, on occasion they do let me head to the children's ward for a bit of story time for those in the waiting room or for those long term patients. If you give me an idea for a when, I will see about borrowing some of their picture books." He could read a couple of stories to Elio from his bed or on this very couch. Perhaps the whole family could come together for
visit...

Reaching forward again for his cup, Charles nursed the temperature with a couple of gentle blows over the surface and took a small sip. The Minister assumed this had to do with all the paperwork that in those folders on the table, or perhaps something to do with Fletcher's surely outstanding job with being acting Minister, or anything work related at all. Perhaps Kaiser was about to tell him about his sinking approval ratings, though he had no evidence of this being true. Nor did he false. "But of course," he chuckled, taking one more sip before setting his cup back down and then folded his hands one over the other and rested them on his slightly propped up left knee. "I always value hearing what you have to say."

Kaiser was not sure he liked how squarely Mr Hollingberry had hit the nail on the head there. Or maybe he did. But he didn't. Regardless, he busied himself with turning the biscuit over in his fingers, mumbling something that might have sounded like, 'not that bad'. He didn't know what was worse, acknowledging to himself or anyone that he was not as fine as he wanted to be, or Mr Hollingberry thinking he was somehow incapable or not up to functioning as an employee or as a person. Because he was. He always was. Always had been. Always would be.

All the same, he glanced up again and nodded, smiled. "Thank you, sir. You as well."

It was also a relief to know he'd said the right thing, regarding Elio, but then Kaiser had been fairly certain such a suggestion might only have gone wrong if it turned out he couldn't bring him in - offering an impossible option would have been almost cruel. "I will. I think he'd like that." Not that Kaiser really had a very good idea - still - of what would or would not appeal to his own kid, but Mr Hollingberry just had that kind of presence. It was strange, Kaiser could picture him looking through a picture book with a younger version of himself little Elio, and Elio happy and content to sit with him, but found it harder to picture the same scene with himself and his son, even though it had already happened a few times before. Also difficult, nearly impossible, in fact, was trying to picture Mr Hollingberry at a stage in his life when he had no children or grandchildren. As for the concept of a Hogwarts-aged Charles Hollingberry, that simply did not compute at all.

Realising he was getting lost in his head again, Kaiser quickly extricated himself from his thoughts, nibbling on the edges of the biscuit but then setting it down on the arm of his chair. He'd finish it later. Maybe.

Rubbing his palms on the tops of his legs, Kaiser took a breath, fighting the urge to argue that the Minister shouldn't value his words so much, because 1. that would be an instant derailment, and 2. there were times it helped that his words were valued, times like this included, which always seemed to be the times they were instantly considered stuff and nonsense.

"I just wanted to tell you, sir," Kaiser said, relieved to find his voice was steady with conviction. "I just wanted to tell you that none of what happened is your fault." Maybe Kaiser was just projecting, but it seemed to him that Charles may well be feeling the burden of guilt after all of what had happened, based entirely on the kind of person he was. Maybe Kaiser had guessed wrong but even so, he had to say it, in case he was right and nobody else was saying it. He couldn't look the Minister in the eye while he said it, but that was more because of what came next. "It's not your fault, sir. It's mine." But most important, right here and now and in this room, was the assertion that Charles Hollingberry was not to blame.

"Thank you, my boy. With any luck I will be back in office by the new year," he smiled with a pleasant hum as his hands massaged his aching knees for a few moments. If he could have it his way, he would be back in his office at the Ministry right now. And that was not as a poor reflection on anyone else, simply his desire to resume working for his people and rebuilding what had been lost. Some nights he lay away lamenting how he was incapable of returning to his post while Trentulla was returning to Hogwarts and his post. He supposed that had to do with there being a plump generation gap between the two men, but it still left Charles feeling...inferior. Inferior and, ironically, with those same insecurities Kaiser was harboring.

How alike they were.

The prospect of a visiting Elio brightening the twinkle to Charles' eyes, he reached for his mug once again and took several luxurious sips of his tea and then dipped a biscuit into it to soak up the tea just to the point before it would crumble. Having just popped the soggy delight into his mouth, it was a wonder that Charles did not choke as Kaiser spoke.

"My bo-ho-ho-ho-oy," Charles hacked as he took another healthy sip of his tea to wash down the biscuit. "How can you possibly blame yourself for any that has happened?" The sentiments that Charles was not to blame were heartwarming, but hard for Charles to stomach when he knew how misguided Kaiser was in his projections and finger pointing. "No, no Kaiser. You are not to blame for these trespassings. In fact it is quite the contrary. Were it not for your actions in my office that day...I would dare venture to say that I would not be where I am now. They would of kept me as their pawn until I became disposable. Kaiser, my boy..." And Charles was reaching over to lay a fatherly hand on his personal assistant's shoulder and attempted to maintain a certain kind of tender intimacy with his gaze. "...you saved me."

The idea that Mr Hollingberry might be back at work so soon set off an awful and not at all unfamiliar chain of conflicted feelings, namely relief that he would be well enough to do so, and dread that they would be working in close quarters, all day, every day. Guilt over the dread. Despair from the guilt.

After all this time, it should have been easier to bear, or at least less of a nasty surprise to think the worst of those thoughts. It shouldn't have been a surprise. Not by now.

It didn't matter. It did matter, but something else had to briefly take precedence.

Kaiser's eyes snapped to the Minister, alarmed, genuinely convinced for a moment that the man would choke on his biscuit and that would be it, curtains, once and for all. Goodnight Vienna. Not only was the thought frankly terrifying on a personal level - working on that - but it wouldn't exactly end well for Kaiser either. Nudging the wizarding world's hero into the next life with a surprise statement and a tea-soaked biscuit. Merlin.

Fortunately, that didn't happen, but Kaiser still couldn't relax. He should his head vehemently even as Mr Hollingberry laid a paternal hand on his shoulder. "I should have noticed earlier. I should have been paying attention to you, to way you did to me. People got hurt, I..." Killed, people got killed. Because of Kaiser. Again and again, it always came back to that. He'd been so wrapped up in himself, the problems he'd been having, the problems he'd been ignoring because he didn't want to admit they were all that bad, and which kept domino'ing into more and more problems. From his first day at the Ministry until the day Mr Fletcher had pulled him aside to talk about Charles, Kaiser had missed everything there was to see, and then it was too late to do anything about it. It would have been so unlike him, once. In another life.

This time he did look at Charles, right into his eyes. Desperate. Imploring him to see reason. "You wouldn't have needed saving, not if I had been paying attention. If I saw what she was doing, if I had said... they wouldn't have got to Trent either." The school. All those kids, all they'd gone through. The locked up children. The battle. The deaths. His chest ached with the weight of them. Kaiser hid his face, heels of his hands pressed hard into his eyes. "I did this. I hurt you... I killed them."

Charles too had mixed feelings about his return to the Ministry, though he never doubted for a second his desire to resume his position. The guilt that he had let his people down, let down the future generation of the wizarding world, wore heavily on his aging body and even more so to his ageless spirit. Even heavier was that he was now a murderer, a line he had never crossed in his life up until this point despite coming awfully close once or twice in his youth. A murderer and his people called him a hero for it. Assured him that it was necessary to end the war and only an act of self defense. One that he had not even done directly and it was Hogwarts, in the and an in its own way, that had delivered the final stroke.

But Charles could not see it that way. To him, he saw a young man...one younger than some of his own children...who had lost his way and the world treated him cruelly. Charles had slaved over old documents and Azkaban reports, files on prisoners and those shuffled from one wizarding prison to another. He had found Lucien and Alphonsine's parents among those records, and it had shattered his weary heart to learn their fate. He could not carry the burden of the decisions of his predecessors and he would scorn none (save for a few obvious few) in their policy, but the ripples were reaching the shore now...and Charles could only imagine that this was the first wave.

There were policies to be revisited, absolutely. And he was eager to speak with Jake Upstead about these soon.

"...my boy..." Charles simply reiterated as his fingers lovingly massaged and dug into Kaiser's shoulder as he spoke on, unloading words that the Minister could sense he had been harboring for some time. It may not feel any better saying them, but better out than in. And then something seemed to shift in Kaiser, though just what...Charles was uncertain. But it was the 'I killed them' that truly had sprung Charles into action, and something in the tininess of Kaiser's voice revealed more layers to this guilt the young man was harboring.. The decreased volume and the nonverbal communication tugged at his heart so terribly that, in this moment, he cast aside the Minister entirely and enveloped the dark haired boy in his arms. An embrace much like a grandfather would give to their own grandchildren, or a father to a son, who had woken up from a horrible horrible nightmare. Which, in many ways, was what they all had and the fear of possibility of what could have been and what should have been done (all the 'if' scenarios) was truly crippling. And so his hand held the back of Kaiser head, gingerly laying it against the older man's shoulder while his other made gentle pats to his back. He would have rocked as well, but his own body would not have been able to remain upright in this situation.

And then his own voice became strained as he spoke.

"...oh my boy...my sweet boy..."

A smirk grew ever so slightly on his face at the thought of the amount of pudding he had been given at the hospital being carried over into his home life. Even though he did need to keep tabs on his diet being an Auror, he definitely wouldn't have had any complaints about there being more pudding in their home. He was, after all, recovering still. All the pudding helped. It really did.

"I would assume so. My mum would surely insist," he responded cheekily to her first question. And he made a face when Hady made the comment about him being spoiled. "It is inevitable when you're mum takes on being your healer." He shrugged again, another wince of pain came from his shoulder. He did his best to hide it by making a quick comment. "The other healers made frequent food deliveries too. Must be because I'm so irresistible."

Just to prove that point, he helped himself to another mouthful of pudding. Of course, he did make a show out of it, making sure every bit of pudding had been licked up so that not a trace was left on the utensil before he returned.

An eyebrow did raise at the mention of the house being clean. He almost laughed at the idea, knowing that their house never stayed clean for long. Organized chaos was what it was most of the time, which he didn't really mind. But Frankie did make a pouty face when his offer was denied. "I think I'll survive with one less spoonful of pudding, Hads." Of course, he wasn't going to force her to eat it. He wasn't one to force her to do anything she didn't want to do. But he did give the side of his bed a pat, inviting her to sit next to him.

The smirk, cheeky tone or whine from that shrug of his did not go unnoticed. With for children at home and two being as sneaky as Logan and Bryony were, not very many things went unnoticed by Hady. "I'm sure she would, so I'm make sure to ask her before we leave and will you stop doing that before you go and make yourself worse," she scolded him lightly frowning whenever he winced. Seeing him in pain was just as bad as seeing one of their little ones hurt, maybe even worse in a way because there wasn't anything she could. At least with their children all of their injuries she had been able to take care of and those she hadn't been.. well none had lasting damage.

"Oh? And why am I only hearing about these other healers now?" Was that a hint a jealousy in her tone right there? "So very spoiled is what you are."

Hazel eyes were rolled at him and she almost laughed at his dramatic show of cleaning his plate of all the pudding. "You're such a child." That was very much something their two younger ones would've done.

"What? It was clean when I left." That's all she can say to that one. They both knew how things worked. She smiled softly, sitting herself down beside him. "Don't give me that look, I hate it when you do that.." Dang pouty face even after all these years it still won her over and she was going to take the offered spoonful of pudding.

Of course she would ask his mum about the alleged pudding order that he honestly had bestowed upon himself. But surely his mum and the other healers would side with him. He was, after all, an excellent patient and a good eater that never complained about the many plates and bowls of food that had been handed to him during his stay. He even begrudgingly ate all of his vegetables too.

The scolding and seeing the slight frown made it very clear that him trying to cover his wincing hadn't worked at all. Frankie wanted to move again to prove to her that it was nothing, but he decided against it was the kneazle was out of the bag. The pain was still there, and he did expect it to be there for a while. "Sorry. I can't help it though!" In actuality he could, but the blond could sit still for only so long. "It's alright. I promise. I've dealt with worse." Which was, more or less, true considering some of the injuries he had over the years. Then again, he still wasn't fully aware of what impact the current injuries would have.

Pudding was a good distraction from it all. Smirk and all, he carried on and didn't utter another word about his arm or the occasional bit of pain he still felt. "Didn't feel like the other healers were important to mention. Why? Jealous?" He chuckled and then rolled his eyes at being called spoiled and a child. "And yet you married me and are still madly in love with me." See? He truly was irresistible.

The impact of his pouty face was only more proof of that. It was something he expected, considering it had worked millions of times before and even his own children had mastered it. "What look?" he asked her, playing oblivious to what she was talking about as he prepared a spoonful of pudding for her if she did end up wanting it. "This one?" He crossed his eyes and stuck out his tongue playfully at her. Yes, yes, he was a child stuck in a grown man's body. Tell him something he didn't already know.

If he thought she was really about to go and search for his mum just so she could ask her about his pudding consumption, he was clearly off his rocker. That would have to wait until later. There was far more pressing matters to deal with right now. "Mm, are you sure about that? Cause I'm sure that you don't have to keep moving your shoulder." Obviously he wasn't going to remain perfectly still but couldn't he tell she was worried about him. "I know that.. I don't need the reminder. You're dealing with worse was how we got married," the brunette joked laughed softly.

Hady eyed him when he asked if she was jealous. Nope, not at all. He was hers. That ring on his finger and the one on hers said so. "Do I need to be?" She knew she didn't. Her heart belonged to his even more now then it did when they were teens. "Let's not forget who asked who to marry them." And the very dramatic way it was done too.

She was prepared to take the offered spoonful of pudding but the face he made at her just then had her laughing instead. "Y-you know B-bryony just m-mastered that face th-the other day?" she managed to tell him through her laughter. His silly childish antics still got her even after all of these years. It was just another thing she loved about him.

Out of habit, he was about to shrug his shoulders in response to the brunnette but he managed to stop himself. He didn't need the wife glaring at him for doing something that unfortunately caused a little twinge of pain, and he didn't need the healers and his mum to turn on him either. For a little while more, he was going to have to take it easy. How long that would actually last was to be determined.

Frankie smiled when she mentioned the past and how him nearly dying for the first time as an Auror is what prompted him to ask her to marry him a lot sooner than he originally had planned. "Very true. And look at what good came of that." A happy marriage, a small army of kids, cruppies. Surely something good would come from all of this too.

Did she need to be jealous of the healers who had taken to him? No, definitely not. He did ask her to marry him, dramatics and all as to be expected. Nevertheless, that wasn't going to stop him from teasing. "Depends. Will you be offering me pudding more than they do?" An eyebrow rose, followed by his trademark smirk.

Still being able to make Hady laugh like that after all these years was the cherry on top. As childish as he was sometimes all the time, this was always the result he wanted: laughter, smiles, good times. "Why am I not surprised?" Their children seemed to have taken on more traits of his than he had expected, which was equally adorable and terrifying at the same time.

Seeing the smile on her husbands face only made her smile as well. "Umm, well I know you aren't talking about how much our families wanted to have our heads on a platter for not telling them of our marriage or for us not have a big traditional wedding." There wasn't an ounce in her body that she regretted what they had done but she knew their families didn't like that they had run off and gotten married without anyone's knowledge at the time. Frankie was right though, all these years later and they were still happily married with their four kiddos and lots of creatures to love.

Hadleigh smirked at him knowing exactly what game he was playing and she was going to play it right back. "Oh, I might.. but see.. that all depends. Will you be listening to me as well as you listened to all of the Healers here?" They both knew just how much rest he had gotten over the last several days. The true question now was, if he was going to continue to get any rest once he was at home.

The way he could make her laugh soothed her soul. Their bond was something special. Unbreakable. "Neither am I but do keep in mind she's still only four." Hady laughed.
