Default Astronomy Lesson One : TBA

The nice April weather is a welcome change to the winter chill that has surrounded the high tower for months. The charms to keep it away from the space have been tuned down thanks to the appearance of full spring. The night sky outside the windows darkened with the occasional grey cloud but thankfully its not much a deterrent for tonight's class.

Upon entering the astronomy classroom for this evening’s lesson, the circular room near the top of the tower resembles how it usually looks. The only difference is a series of charmed pictures of the night sky that are placed occasionally along the stone walls. If you look at one long enough, you might notice what at first looks like the streak of a meteor moving across them much like what was seen during the meteor shower activities held earlier in the year, but the eagle-eyed might notice a difference. Also on the professor’s desk lay a few covered boxes containing what might be needed for the lesson.

No peeking as Professor Gert is in the classroom, standing between her desk and the door to greet students as they enter. But don't worry, you likely wont be waiting long to find out what the curly haired woman has in store. Soft hoots occasionally heard from the rafters above alert you to the presence of her familiar whose decided to visit for the moment.

ooc: Hello and welcome to Astronomy. With the IC time of year, remember this isn't their first lesson. So come on in and the lesson will be moving on in about 24 hours to begin

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon stuck the dowel(handle?) into the sphere, and deftly tied on his ribbons. That was the easy part. This was the hard part. Glacius. He practiced the wand movement, which felt complicated, and repeated the word glacius several times. Even after practicing, it took him a while to cast the spell right and two tries to fully encase it in white. "Glacius. Glacius? Glacius. Glacius. Glacius." There. He looked around to see how other people were doing, and was relieved when he wasn't the last person to finish.

Brandon stood, moving to the side of the room. Were they going to walk in circles? That's where he thought this was going. "Um... I think comets have tails because the sun vaporizes part of the comet and that part trails behind the comet." He hesitated. "Is that the same as what Jude said?"

Oh goody, they were handling the spell without too much trouble. Had there been struggle, she would have gladly helped, but she hadn’t wanted to be too overshadowing. And voila…a fun, new spell they now knew. “Correct, Mr. Anders, “Celeste confirmed, taking note that while he had mentioned the two tails but only described one. Helpfully letting his fellow students contribute to the answer.

“Essentially, yes, Ms. Marchand,” she said with a nod to the girl’s attention, no matter how tentative she was about her dust answer. “And partly. What we see is from both the curved path of the comet and because we’re seeing it along the curvature of the earth’s atmosphere.” It distorted the way they saw things all the time as if constantly reminding humans that the earth was round.

“Exactly, Mr. Fox!” she remarked enthusiastically to encourage the younger boy. “Not entirely...and yours technically covered both tails,” she assured him before continuing on. “The tails are a product of the sun or whatever star the comet is orbiting around as it comes to the closest point of its orbit. The ions created by the ultraviolet light of the star and the dust a result of the heat of said so the star.”

And soon enough they had a perimeter of students with their icy ‘comets’ around the astronomy classroom. “Now as you may have guessed, I’d like you to start moving around the room, holding your comets out so the momentum can affect them.” Essentially representing the ultraviolet light that created the ion tail represented by the ribbons. “I’ll be the sun,” Professor Gert remarked, moving closer to Jude to start. Taking out her wand, she cast a hot arm charm to generate the warmth that would melt their comets and create the dust tail in the water droplets generated.

(ooc: You're all so wonderful. Wrapping up by the end of the weekend.)

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jude was pleased that some of the other students had picked up where he purposely left off. Jude wouldn’t have to worry about making much notes from this lesson, which was great since it left him to focus more on the activity. An activity which he was quite enjoying, by the way.

He offered Gert a wide smile when she moved closer to him to kick things off. Okay, she wasn’t the professor for the time but the sun. As instructed, the Hufflepuff started moving around the room. Jude did feel a whoosh of hot air but his focus? His focus was upon the handmade comets.

He couldn’t wait to see the effects the ‘sun’ would have on them.

So her answer wasn’t entirely correct? Desiree was neither surprised nor disappointed about that. Mostly she was relieved that her answer wasn’t as far off the mark as she thought it would be! She listened to Professor Gert’s explanation, though most of it was lost on her. Ugh! Why couldn’t she get this?! Was she really as ditzy as people thought?

At least she understood the instructions for the next part of the activity! They were supposed to hold their comets out as they walked so momentum could affect them… Hmm, would it matter how fast she walked? Maybe the faster she walked, the faster the tail would appear… She had no idea, but she supposed there was only one way to find out!

Desiree started walking around the room, holding her “comet” as far out as she could. Hopefully the water droplets would stay on the tail and not get on her! Yeah no, she didn't feel like getting wet today, thanks! As she walked, she gradually picked up speed as the hot air hit her. She looked at her comet and saw that the ice was starting to melt. Ooh, she hoped that meant she’d see the tail soon!

Interesting. So it was both positive and negative, which probably made sense when Apollo thought about it. Since there was good and bad in everything, even humans. So they were going to be mimicking a comet now? Taking the items from each of the boxes, Apollo returned to his seat as he considered what prediction to make. Was it supposed to be vague enough to be able to apply to any of them? Or specific to what he wanted to happen to just him? Deciding to go with vague, he wrote: You will find success in the near future. Rolled it up and inserted it into the foam sphere.

He then stuck the dowel into the sphere and attached five ribbons to the end of the dowel. "Glacius". He knew the freezing the charm but having a review was always good, he watched as the foam ball became encased in ice. As far as why comets have tails, he was going to say something about how it was to help with momentum. But apparently not quite?

Apollo started to get up to walk around and hold his comet like a flag, but then decided last minute to cast the levitation charm on it and watched it hover alongside him. But wait, he needed it to move. So he added the locomotor charm as well to get it to move through the air, and the seventh year moved along beside it, waiting for Professor Gert to cast the hot air charm on his comet...

Summer had been just paying attention to the lesson and she had been listening to what everyone else had been saying, she though had kept quiet throughout the lesson, she didn't really have anything to say about comets.

She then heard what the Professor said about holding up their comets, she started to move around the room, like the Professor had asked them to.

Brandon never understood why professors did fun things at the end of class. But he wasn't about to tell them to be mean and punish them all instead... he liked doing fun things! Please continue! He was just unused to it. These professors weren't at all like his tutors. He walked in a slow circle around the room, holding his comet out and watching its dust and "light"(ribbon) tails in action. Oh... wow. This was cool. He stared at his comet, particularly fascinated by the melting of the water turning into a tail. Magic was fun sometimes, he had to admit.

Making sure to keep the charmed air warm enough to melt the ice but comfortable for the students to move through, she watched as the succession of students moved past her and the ‘sun’s rays’ she was aiming their way. First Jude…then Desiree….Apollo….then Summer…Brandon…and the rest. All the comets and the caretakers moving in orbit and letting the ion ribbons flow and ice and ash melting onto the ribbons as they went. Mr. Adara-Stark certainly was getting into it, making his ‘comet’ levitate and float around on its own creating more natural movement of the faux celestial object.

Of course the more they moved around and came near her, the more the comet would melt from her spell but class time was coming to an end before there was a mess on their hands from slush. Cancelling her spell once they had each gone around a few times, she moved back to the center of the room to address them all. “Unfortunately, there wont be any comets visible this year for us to see, with their far less frequency than the meteor showers we’ve been watching this term. On average a major comet can be seen from Earth every 5-10 years.” Alas it just wasn’t in the cards to match up this time around.

“I would advise either melting your comets in the dorm bathrooms tonight before you go to bed or outside tomorrow to avoid any surprises." The warming spring weather wouldn't let them stay much. And with that…class is dismissed. Good night, everyone.” The woman moving back to her desk to sit on its surface to wait out her students and any questions they may have before they left.

(ooc: Thank you all for coming. Hope you enjoyed learning about comets. I'll leave the thread open for about 24 hours for catch ups and exits)
