Default Transfiguration I: Halloween Costumes

TRANSFIGURATION SEMINAR

For today’s Transfiguration seminar, the class is being held in one of the larger classrooms, to allow extra space and for ease of all involved. Don’t worry too much though, that just means your classroom is closer to the Great Hall and you have a few extra minutes to eat your sandwiches. Remember, Professor Eris’ expects you to have built up plenty of energy for today’s lesson, especially considering we have just finished lunch and it is Monday. You are still feeling refreshed after the weekend, yes?

As you step into the class Professor Eris is waiting for you, wearing a deep navy set of robes. He’s leaning on the front of his desk, relaxed and waiting for you all to arrive. There is a large rail to the side of his desk, as tall as the Professor and easily two arm spans long. Upon looking it over further though the only thing you can see past the purple velvet cover, are the feet - and unfortunately that doesn’t give you much clue towards the lesson today.

Today, the tables are set up for group work, 2x2 desks create four spaces per area and there are piles of a5 and a4 cut pieces of parchment in the middle of each cluster. Between the piles, is a tub filled with a wide variety of colouring pencils.

As you get comfortable, if you look past the covered rail and Professor Eris himself you will see that there is a single word written on the blackboard behind his desk.

IC-wise please remember that we are almost two months into classes with Professor Eris’ so this wouldn’t be your first time meeting him.

Before joining us, please make sure you have read the rules and expectations for Transfiguration this term.

Class will officially start in roughly 24 - 36 hours from this post.

As Carwyn moved around the classroom, he noted that most of the students had decided to take off their shoes so that they could achieve the best results and form fitting shoes. Very sensible, especially if they decided to dance in them on Sunday! Walking behind Miss Bellchant, Carwyn nodded, grinning at her shoes. ”Very nice, I can’t wait to see the outfit to go with them.”

As he moved around the classroom, he helped with pronunciation until he found himself with Miss Blaze who also had two perfectly formed shoes on her feet and her school shoes placed slightly to the side. ”Great work, Miss Blaze.” He said with a nod, his eyes keenly on her shoes. ”White shoes are so often underrated.” His eyes twinkled as he moved around the classroom.

And on his last stop on the way back to the front of the class, he noted Miss McCarthy’s shoes. ”Very good, Miss McCarthy. Heels can be difficult to pull off if you haven’t practiced lately.” Though, she seemed to have quite a knack for transfiguration from what he had seen so far this term. ”I especially like the tones of black.” He nodded, grinning at her. Very, very nice.

As he moved back to the front of the classroom, his hand motioned to the second spell on the board, and the rail of clothes. ”Now, for your main outfit. The wand motion is somewhat similar, in that you lower your wand in a straight line to the piece of clothing you wish to transfigure, before tapping it three times with your wand, then say the incantation. For this, it is multicorfors. Exactly as it sounds. Now, make sure that from the instant you move your wand, you have the new item of clothing in your mind. You can’t change the item once you have cast it, you would need to try again.”

He nodded and picked one of the remaining items from the rail - a bright pink shirt that was obviously for a teenager, with no sleeves and purple flowers. ”As lovely as this shirt is, it isn’t fit for me.” He grinned at them, before picturing the vintage style pale, off-white cotton shirt in his head. With only a few buttons around the neck, long sleeves and no collar. His wand lowered to the pink shirt, he tapped three times and then said clearly; ”Multicorfors.” The change seeped from where his wand was held against the material until he was holding a 1920’s shirt in his hand.

”Now you try.” He nodded. ”If you have any questions, hand up and I’ll come to help.”

Hiya! Last part of the main activity now. We have roughly 24-30 hours left, so have fun. Any questions, post them up and I’ll reply as soon as I can after work tomorrow. <3

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine was only too pleased with the praise from the professor. She sent him a nod and a small smile. It was true she had expected to not have much luck as this was the case with new spells. Thinking back, she tagged the success down to the fact that it was all or mostly because of her focus and determination. “They’re very comfortable,’’ the girl added to the man, referring to the shoes.

Eris made it seem so easy, the way that he transfigured that shirt. But Claudine already sensed she was going to have some trouble. Still, she was determined to do her best. She opted to remain standing and spread one piece of fabric, a bright yellow one, on the table she was using. The Snakette looked at her sketch once more for inspiration. A deep breath wouldn’t be so bad either so she took one.

“Multicorfors.’’ Claudine pronounced the word clearly as she pictured the shirt she had in mind. At the same time, the wand movement was made exactly as Eris had demonstrated. The girl waited impatiently… but nothing happened. She was not surprised. “Multicorfors.’’ The process was repeated.

However, after a few more attempts, Claudine was getting nowhere. The fabric remained stubborn as ever.

How frustrating.

Hmm, Bernadette didn't really want new shoes just for this activity. She actually had grey boots up in her dorm that would go nicely with her leggings. But speaking of grey leggings.... wouldn't they be so much more comfortable right now than her uniform pants? Yes, yes they would.

Bernie pictured the grey and black striped leggings she had drawn on her paper for her kneazle costume, and then tapped the side of her leg three times with her wand. "Multicorfors," she cast, watching as her pants became leggings and the stripes were mostly there. They were faint, but they were there!

Isla smiled. "I can't wait to see it either!" she exclaimed, seeing as she'd only ever seen her costume in pictures. She picked up the sea-green fabric that had first caught her eye when the rail had been revealed. This would be her leotard. She didn't have to do anything about the color of the fabric. It was already so very close to the color she'd imagined, that she wasn't even sure if there was a difference in coloring at all. All she had to do was picture the shape of the leotard. It was sleeves, form-fitting, and stopped just after the two holes that were meant for her legs.

"Multicorfors!" she called out, moving her wand in a straight, downward movement. She tapped one...two...three times. With her eyes wide and jaw slightly dropped, she watched the magic happen. The fabric shrunk a good bit, because it was super big to begin with, and Isla was only eleven-years-old. Pretty soon, all the shrinking, twisting, and turning had produced a a leotard, one that seemed like it would go great with the rest of her costume!

Now it was time to try and transfigure her tutu, which seemed like it would be a lot harder to transfigure than a simple leotard. The one she'd imagined had been multicolored with silver strings here and there. Concentrating a little harder would hopefully do the trick! She picked up the second fabric she'd chosen, and then she thought long and hard about the alternating colors...sea-green, blue, sea-green, blue... Then she thought about the silver strings and the fluffiness of the tutu. Again, her wand moved in a straight, downward motion. "Multicorfors!" she said again, as she made the three taps. It took a full minute of transforming for the full tutu to be made, but there it was! Right there in front of her and a perfect magic to the leotard.

"Professor?" she asked, raising her hand. "How do I make my butterfly hair clip and the muggle-style wand?"

How had she sketched out her entire phoenix costume but forgotten the shoes? One of the most important parts of an outfit! Avalon grabbed her quill and quickly added a pair of black, spindly heels. Normal phoenix talons weren't that cute, but she wasn't about to give herself shriveled up bird feet for an accessory. Then, she headed over to the rack of clothing, where she picked up two plates and a hideous, oversized jumper with ghastly, multicolored paisley pattern. It would take some serious concentration to turn this into something wearable.

Avalon practiced the incantations a few times under her breath as she jotted down notes on her parchment. This would be a handy transfiguration spell to remember for the future. She decided to start with her shoes, so the young Ravenclaw removed her stylish black boots. Balancing herself carefully on the plates, she pictured the pair of strappy black heels.

"Pedestis," Avalon said as she bent down to tap the plate with her wand. She felt the plate conform to her right foot and tighten around her sole before creeping up her ankle. It worked! She repeated the process for her other foot, only to find that the plate transfigured into a flat rather than a heel. Thankfully, a quick reversal spell and a retry did the trick. After a few moments, she had two fabulous-looking shoes.

Now for the dress. This could definitely be difficult. In her mind, she pictured her sketch: the flowing scarlet gown with orange and red feathers. She tapped the ugly jumper three times while saying, "Multicorfors," closing her eyes to focus on her dress design. Her mouth dropped open as the garment transformed into a beautiful, shimmering gown. Okay, it definitely wasn't perfect (it was missing a few feathers around the sleeves), but it wasn't anything she couldn't fix.

Tom was still trying to figure out what else he would need, like a shirt, tie, trousers, shoes. It would be epic to make something so cool, though he still wanted to go trick-a-treating.

Tom used the Pedestis spell to make the shoes, that was an amazing spell and he would be using it all the time when he was older, would save the cost of buying shoes ever.

Now though the main spell, he tried to focus on the outfit he wanted, but he was too busy thinking about trick-a-treating. "Multicorfors!" All those sweets they would be amazing.

"Eh Professor!" Tom's shirt didn't look like he wanted it too. "What is this?" He looked at the shirt.

Alessandro had feelings about wearing other people's clothes. Mostly negative feelings. Scratch that. All negative feelings. He wore leather gloves every day as a contact barrier to the world around him. Pulling something off of the rack and transfiguring it to wear was not something he was keen on doing. At all.

It being transfigured did not change it was not his clothes.

He dampened his discomfort and set about the first task. He could stand on a plate and transfigure a set of shoes. The pair he was wearing now were black and polished and very smart. They would have more than worked for his costume, but he still slipped them off and did the assignment. Al stood on the plates, tapped it with his wand and said clearly, "Pedestis." He felt the plate begin to transform and wrap around his feet snugly. They were nice shoes. Not dissimilar to the ones he wore to class.

Albeit the shoes he owned were made by a master craftsman and Al transfigured a plate. But they had a similar vibe. He was pleased with his work.

Until he was faced with the next task.

The seventh year stared at the shirt. The shirt that did not belong to him. The shirt he retrieved from the rack. And...he couldn't do it. He raised his hand and quietly, discreetly, asked the Professor, "Sir, whatever I transfigure...I don't have to actually wear it, right?" Because the very thought made his skin crawl.

So Naya was right. They were going to be transfiguring things into their costumes. She listened carefully as the instructions were given. She had a vision for her outfit and she wanted it to look good. When the professor had finished speaking, Naya went to look at the selection of clothing items. She figured that she would need to things to make her blouse and skirt. She chose a plaid pair of pants and a white sweater. Hopefully she would be able to make them work. Grabbing two paper plates, Naya went back to her work area.

As instructed, Naya began with the paper plates. She took her shoes off and placed the plates on the floor. She made sure to stand in the middle of the plates. As always, the hardest part for her was maintaining her concentration. That would be very important for this task. Closing her eyes, Naya pictured the ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz. They were very clear in her mind. If she could only keep that picture in her mind, maybe the spell would work. Naya opened her eyes, bent down and tapped one plate with her wand. “Pedestis”, she said clearly. She looked down at her newly formed shoe. It was red and that was good, but it wasn’t quite as sparkly as it should have been. Tackling the second shoe, Naya repeated the spell. “Pedestis” Well that one was a little better. The shoe had a little more glitz, but now she had two shoes that didn’t match. The Gryffindor decided that she would move on to her clothing and try to fix the shoes if she had time. Better to have mismatched shoes, than not to have clothes.

Naya picked up her white sweater and as she held it she pictured Dorothy’s white blouse. Short sleeves, ruffles......she had the details in her mind. She moved her wand down in a straight line toward the sweater. Then when she was sure she had the vision clearly in her mind, she tapped it one, two, three times. “Multicorfors”. The result was close, but still not quite all the way right. What could she say? She was a perfectionist, but it would have to do for now.

The most important part was the dress. Naya had to get this right. She picked up the plaid pants and took a deep breath. Concentrating as hard as she could, she pictured the blue and white gingham dress. When she thought she couldn’t possibly be thinking any harder, Naya moved her wand downward toward the pants. Blue and white dress, blue and white dress. She tapped the pants three times and said, “Multicorfors”. And the dress was........not bad. Maybe practice did make perfect. This was her best effort yet. Now if the could just fix the shoes and make her accessories.

Heath was having so much fun brainstorming a Halloween costume that he nearly forgot this was transfiguration class… until Professor Eris revealed the odd assortment of clothing on the rail and began explaining the spell. Oh, so they weren’t doing props today? Heath frowned. Darn! He wanted to learn how to transfigure something into a lightsaber! He blinked confusedly at the mention of paper plates. That seemed like a weird choice of item to turn into a shoe, but who was he to question it? He was no transfiguration expert by any means!

Heath watched in awe as Professor Eris turned an ordinary paper plate into a shoe. Whoa! That was so cool! Probably harder than it looked, though… knowing his luck with transfiguration, probably a lot harder. But Heath wasn’t going to let that stop him from learning. He hung on to the professor’s every word, carefully copying down the information on the board. Think how much time and money he’d save on costumes if he could master this spell! He eagerly approached the rail, looking over the clothing choices. For the Luke Skywalker vest, he picked an orange and green striped jumper that looked like something his grandpa would wear, and for the utility belt, a little girls’ pink glitter belt.

After grabbing a couple of paper plates from the basket, Heath returned to his seat. He unlaced his school shoes and placed them neatly under his desk before standing on the plates. Okay, tap the plate once, and… “Pe-des-tis!” Heath looked down, and… nothing happened. Why? Did he say the spell wrong? He checked his notes. No. Maybe he didn’t tap it hard enough. He tried again. “Pedestis!” Was it just him, or did the plate look a bit more fitted to his foot this time? Maybe if he tried again, the third time would be the charm… or in this case, the transfiguration.

“Pedestis!” Heath cried, a little more forcefully this time. He managed to make the plate turn black, but it still hadn’t molded into the shape of a boot. He heaved a frustrated sigh. Ugh! Why couldn’t he get this spell right? He knew exactly what Luke Skywalker’s boots were supposed to look like, so why wouldn’t the picture in his mind materialize in reality?

Before Heath could attempt the spell again, they were moving on to something else. Oh, great. Another spell I’m going to mess up in front of everybody, he thought as he watched the demonstration. Might as well get it over with! He looked from the jumper to the belt, silently debating which one would be easier to transfigure. He decided to start with the belt, thinking maybe its smaller size would make it easier. Picturing the black Luke Skywalker utility belt clearly in his mind, he moved his wand down in a straight line to the belt and tapped it three times. “Multicorfors!”

Did that do anything? Heath scrutinized the belt. Hmm… it did look a little longer and thicker if you squint, but that wasn’t good enough! He tried again. “Multicorfors!” Now the belt was definitely longer, and it had turned black. It was definitely an improvement, but it still didn’t have the pouch or the lightsaber clip… and the belt buckle was all wrong. Now what was he doing wrong? Heath thought for a minute. Maybe a utility belt was too complicated to start out. He decided to try the vest instead. Concentrating as hard as he could on the image of Luke Skywalker’s long black vest, he moved his wand straight down and tapped the ugly orange and green jumper thrice. “Multicorfors!”

When Heath looked again, there was a black vest where the jumper used to be. The V- cut wasn’t as deep as it was supposed to be, and the sizing was a bit off. Still, he was calling this a win for now. Maybe he could do this after all! Now if only he could fix the utility belt and figure out how to do the boots, he’d be set!

OOC: you are all doing so well! Im running out the door to work after a shift change and unfortunately I don't have time not to reply to everyone individually. I'll leave the thread open for another twelve or so hours before closing it, so you can all finish up with your transfigurations. Thank you all for coming and I hope you had fun!

Also - he would have made sure they knew that they didn't have to wear or keep their outfits if they already had something else in mind. If they aren't keeping their work, simply post them leaving their work behind on their desk or Carwyn's.

Carwyn was so proud. Did they know? Even as he moved around the classroom, helped with their pronunciation or gave them pointers, none of the students in the class seemed to be phased when their spell work didn't work first time. And Transfiguration with a tricky subject, cut required practice and concentration. He could ask for nothing more than the dedication they were all showing.

As he made it back to his desk for a second time, He caught a look of his watch and blinked. When had the time moved on so quickly?? "Time is moving on, everyone... We have five to ten minutes left before we need to pack up. he looked at the single brown shoe on the desk, before picking up a second paper plate. He couldn't wear one brown shoe to the party on Sunday.

~~~~
Ten minutes later, Professor Eris clapped his hands and called the attention back to him. "Well done everyone! If anyone would like to continue to work on their outfits, I will be here after dinner for one hour each night this week and you are welcome to come in and practice." he was smiling again.
"The reason I am offering extra time, is because between 2pm and 4pm on Sunday -which is Halloween- I will be hosting a Gathering in our normal Classroom. Dancing, some games, cdecorations and a chance to show off your hard work from this week. Obviously it is not compulsory, but it should be fun before we all head to the Halloween Feast."
He stood up and moved to open up the door, his usual sign that they were all free to leave when they were ready. He stood beside it and wished them all a good day, that he would see them soon or that if they popped in past later he 2ould help them to transfigure their props for their outfits.
What did she need to pull off her costume? Honestly, most of what she needed she could probably use what was in her dorm, but perhaps hair pieces. A wig. A headpiece. But the camisole and a cute skirt were things that she already had, so really it was just changing her hair and maybe transfiguring a pair of fun genie-ish sandals???
Hmm, so the two spells they were learning today had nothing to do with hair. She'd perhaps have to get some extra assistance on learning a hair color changing charm. Or one to temporarily cut her hair.
For now though, she took two plates from the designated area and brought them back to her desk. Pulling off her socks and shoes, she set the plates on the ground, carefully stepping one foot onto each one. Tap of each plate with her wand .... kinda made her feel like a fairy godmother????? "Pedestis." She said at one, imagining a cute gypsy-style strappy sandal. And then repeated on the other one. Perfect.
Oh, she was meant to practice the other spell too?? Although she didn't really neeeedddd a clothing outfit, since she had that she could already use, perhaps using something to make a headpiece?? Like that scarf might work .... Placing the scarf on her desk, she drew a straight down motion with her wand and then three taps, picturing the fancy headpiece in her mind, "Multicorfors," really concentrating on the intricate detail and then ... success. Sort of. Because trying it on her head, she frowned when she realized it was actually too small for her head.
