Default Transfiguration Lesson: TBA

It’s an ordinary November afternoon at Hogwarts, but there’s nothing ordinary about the setup for today’s transfiguration lesson. The usual student desks are gone, replaced by several wooden workbenches, like one might find in a tool shed or garage. The lack of desks may be the most obvious change, but it’s not the only one. There’s a mysterious large object at the back of the room, covered by a cloth. How does it relate to the lesson? Only time will tell.

Even Professor Carton’s desk looks different today. While it remains in its usual spot in the front left corner of the room, the normally tidy workspace is littered with boxes of varying sizes. THe boxes are full of buttons, pipe cleaners, and assorted sizes of cardboard. Supplies for an art project, perhaps?

The professor himself stands at the front of the room, waiting to welcome the students. “Hello, welcome in!,” he greets each arrival. “As you come in, collect the materials you’ll need today from the boxes on my desk. There’s a list on the board.”

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

It was very difficult for one not to be curious about the rather noticeable changes in the Transfiguration classroom. Not to mention there was something covered by cloth towards the back. Jude rather liked it when the professors took the time to pique his interest. “Hi, professor!” he greeted cheerily. Oh? Materials? They were going to be doing some creating today then? Jude knew better than to ask but instead read the list quickly before moving from box to box at Carton’s desk.

Arms loaded with the materials, the Hufflepuff moved off to find himself a place to sit. In the end, he settled for a workbench somewhere in the middle of the room. But yes, his brain was actively attempting to figure out what today’s lesson was about based on the materials collected.

Hope was still new enough to Hogwarts that any changes in the appearance of the classrooms failed to surprise her--everything was new and different as it was. But she was happy, and a little excited, at the instructions. "Good afternoon, Professor Carton. Are we going to be making something?" she greeted him, as she happily collected her supplies. Hope loved making things with her hands, she felt much more confident about that than some of the bookwork at Hogwarts.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

"Hello, Professor Carton." Brandon tensed as he entered the classroom, thrown off by the difference setup. It was out of the usual. Not bad, but it made him more observant. This... this sounded like one of his sister's crazy surprise art ideas. "Are we doing an art project?" he asked carefully. He collected 1 large cardboard, 2 medium cardboards, 2 small cardboards, 4 pipe cleaners, and 20 buttons. Just like the instructions said. He took his place next to Jude, uneasily wondering what they were doing and how it was related to Transfiguration.

It could be fun. Or not. He hadn't decided yet... but he had good experiences with art projects. So he'd give it a shot.

Freddie strutted in for another Transfiguration lesson. Though he wondered if he had entered a different class with the whole setup. But that thought washed away immediately with the sound of Professor's voice, "Hiya Professor Carton!" Beaming at bright as he felt today.

Now they just had to gather the materials. So he went over to pick xollect the correct amount of different-sized cardboard, pipe cleaners, and buttons each.

Another week…another transfiguration lesson.

Rajesh made his way to Carton’s classroom after lunch with plenty of time to spare, entering in to see then changes made. Seemed like they were definitely going to be having an interesting lesson. “Good afternoon, Professor,” he greeted the man at the front of the room. The seventh year depositing his bookbag on one of the workbenches before following his head of house’s instructions, gathering the listed materials from the various boxes on Professor Carton’s desk before returning to take a seat. Several cardboards, pipe cleaners, and buttons were added to wooden surface along with the parchment, quill and ink he took out of his bag.

Now to await what the lesson was all about…and what was hidden under the cloth at the back of the room.

Arts and crafts? Hmm. That was...different. Nancy was down to try anything the professor felt was useful for learning, though, especially since transfiguration was turning out to be one of her more difficult subjects. "Hello Professor Carton!" she said with a smile as she walked in and headed to his desk. She paused and stood on her tip toes to look in all the boxes, collecting each of the items outlined on the board.

Cardboard, medium cardboards, small cardboards, purple pipe cleaners because purple was her favorite and the handful of buttons she needed...check, check and check. Once she had everything, she headed to the back and situated herself at one of the desks, spreading her supplies out in front of her. She had literally NO clue where this could be going, but she was EXCITED to find out!

Relieved it was November and one of the absolute worst days of the year over, Atlas made his way to the Transfiguration classroom after spending entirely too much time in the Owlery sending off a couple (read: one) essential correspondences. Unaware that an owl or two had left him a couple of watery white presents in his hair and on the back of his robes just between his shoulder blades, the Gryffindor took a look at the board and all the props for the day. As tired as he was of the gimmick of a covered box to be revealed later, the Gryffindor was nonetheless intrigued by the rest of the materials along with the workstations and he actually felt hopeful that today's lesson just may be in his wheelhouse.

Not to jinx it or anything, the seventh year knocked on the wooden door a couple of times just in case and headed over to the vacant seat beside Freddie where he dropped his bookbag on the workstation with an unceremonious thump. It was a remarkably deeper sound than one would expect from a school bag but...never anyone mind about that.

Tucking his cardboard under one arm, pipe cleaners in his left hand and buttons in his right, Atlas offer Professor Carton and chill wave of the hand as a greeting before moving back to his seat and arranging all his pieces on his workstation. "I really hope we are turning this lot into metal and not wood," he whispered to Freddie. Though he would always prefer the real deal over transfigured items, it would still be nice for practicing techniques and builds.

Transfiguration was a class that Keighley really enjoyed. Not that she was perfect in that class, in fact she had trouble with new specials quite regularly but that didn't keep her from paying very close attention and trying her best each lesson. Learning was why she was here in the first place.

With a bright smile and a spring in her step, the Hufflepuff walked into the room. "Good afternoon, Professor Carton!" Cue wiggly fingers in the mans direction as she bounced towards the front of the room to collect the days needed materials. Her gaze taking in the worktables as substitution for their usual desks and chairs. That was a little curious but not so much as to make her question it.

Without really much thought as to why yet, she collected 1 large cardboard, 2 medium ones and 2 small ones. Then she got herself four pipe cleaners, each different color. And lastly was the buttons, counting out around twenty different ones before taking everything to a work area nearest to her brother. A big smile was aimed right at Jude along with wiggly fingers. Hi, Juuuuuuuude!

Yukie always took notice of any changes in the classroom setup, so to see some significant changes done to the Transfiguration classroom did make her mind zoom through the possibilities of what they would learn today. Especially without the desks! Were those workbenches? What's that thing hidden beneath the cloth at the back? She always hoped their lesson would be something that could help switch things up with her hair or something, but she'll take anything. Yukie had grown fond of transfiguration and charms class.

"Afternoon, professor!" Yukie greeted the Ravenclaw head of house with a smile and moved towards the boxes to collect her needed supplies and finding a workbench for herself. She went for twenty buttons because she was feeling it. Feeling maximum. Maybe they were going to make some art with all these.

Either way, the Hufflepuff was looking forward to it. Still curious about the hidden thing too.

Entering the classroom, she didn't notice too much different from the usual set up - though perhaps the mess of boxes really should have been a clue in. She smiled at Professor Carton, offering a soft, "Hello, Professor." to her head of house before heading off in search of a work station. It was only after Mouse had seated herself that she realized the others had heard and were following the instructions to get materials together. Jumping back up, the girl scurried back to the front - carefully examining the list as she started with the smaller materials to slip into her robes pockets - selecting pipe cleaners in two different shades of purple, a red and a white, trying to coordinate her buttons in similar color as well. If they WERE making an art project, she was feeling Dr. Facilier vibes today.

With those all collected, she grabbed her boxes and headed back towards her work station, sending a small smile towards all the people she knew as she did so. All these supplies certainly had her intrigued for today's lesson.

Norman hadn’t been waiting long when the first student arrived. Someone was certainly cheerful this afternoon! “Hello, Mr. Anders,” he replied with a smile that matched the boy’s level of cheeriness.

Here was another cheerful student! Just the sort of attitude Norman liked to see… well, as much as he was capable of having any preference for emotions. “Good afternoon, Miss Archard,” he said, smiling slightly. “Yes, we are.” As to exactly what they were making, that would remain a mystery for now. He didn’t want to give too much away!

Norman noticed the contrast in Fox’s demeanor compared to the previous two students, but he wasn’t fussed about it. “Hello, Mr. Fox,” he greeted, giving a barely perceptible nod in response to the question. “We might.” That was the only answer he could give without revealing the lesson subject early on!

McLeod’s strutting did not go unnoticed. Norman was secretly amused, though he showed no outward sign of reaction. “Hello, Mr. McLeod,” he replied with a smile. Clearly someone was in a good mood today!

"Hello, Mr. Flamsteed,” Norman greeted, acknowledging the Gryffindor’s wave with a polite nod. There were two things about the boy’s arrival that caught his attention. One was the unusual sound that his bookbag made when dropped, to which the professor paid little mind. As long as it didn’t cause distraction, the bag’s contents didn’t matter. The other thing he noticed was the white… substance on the boy’s hair and robes. Did he know that was there? Better tell him, just in case.

Crossing the room to Flamsteed’s workstation, he whispered, “You have something in your hair and in your robes, just so you know.” What the boy did with that information was his choice.

Another cheerful Hufflepuff. Rasting’s arrival was likewise greeted with a smile from the professor. “Good afternoon, Miss Rasting,” Norman replied.

Norman acknowledged Durand’s arrival with a slight smile and polite nod. “Hello, Miss Durand,” he replied, watching as she gathered her materials. Interesting color choices!

Following Durand’s arrival, Norman’s bluish-green eyes flicked toward the door, watching for any sign of stragglers in the hall. When there were none to be found, he pointed his wand at the door, and it closed with a soft click. He checked his watch: exactly 1:00. Perfect timing!

“Good afternoon, class. Let’s get started,” he addressed the group. He paused for a minute or two to allow time for the students to focus on him. “Here’s a hypothetical scenario for you: Imagine you’re stranded in the wilderness somewhere, and you need to build a shelter. How might you use magic to help you?”

As his eyes scanned the room, he noted the number of younger students present. “We won’t be reenacting that scenario,” he added with a slight reassuring smile. Just in case anyone was worried. “It’s just a question to get you thinking.”

OOC: Thanks for coming! Class has officially started. Feel free to jump in at any time. Just pretend your character has been here the whole time, unless you want IC consequences for a late arrival. We’ll move on in ABOUT 24 HOURS.

Shelters were the topic of today, were they? That was certainly interesting. Mouse glanced at the materials they had all gathered now and wondered if that's what they would be doing today, but as Carton was assuring kids they were not reenacting being stranded and shelter being a necessity, she thought perhaps not. Besides... how would buttons tie in? Focusing on the question at hand, she raised her hand and waited to be called on.

"Could Incarcerous work, sir? If memory serves, it's mainly used to bind people but... it does sound out rope to whatever the castor is pointing at so if one were to use that on... some pieces of wood or something, would the spell work to bind it?"

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jude soon forgot about trying to brainstorm possible lesson topics. Instead, he focused on his friends as they arrived; the first being Brandon. He grinned at the younger Puff. “You doing okay?” For Brandon seemed a little… off. The youngest Anders got a huge smile {because Jude adored her SO much}. “Hey, Keigh!”

Okay… so, being stranded out in the wilderness and a shelter was needed… the boy put himself in that scene using his imagination. He figured that any of the forms of Transfiguration would be useful and Jude cast his mind around for helpful spells before raising his hand. "Temran Madera, Professor, which turns leaves into lengths of boards or planks."

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Summer was listening to the Professor as they spoke about the surving in the wildness, well there was two things you could do, build a massive fort, which would be easy, surely if you had wood that's all you need so how would using a spell work, oh that right.

"Could you do like they do on that game fortnite and make objects like wood fly and go into different places, to build something cool." Summer asked, she couldn't think of anything else to say.

Ok, stranded in the wilderness. Nancy tried to imagine it - ignoring the fact that she probably wouldn't have been in the wilderness to BEGIN with - and tried to think of what she'd use magic to help her accomplish. After a moment she raised her hand, thinking she had a pretty reasonable answer.

"Well, first thing I would do would probably be send up some of those sparks into the air to see if anyone is around to come save me," she explained. Building? Who wanted to BUILD, and what was a Fortnite? "I'd do that before even attempting to build anything. Why waste time if someone is literally like, half a mile away to come save me?" she continued.

And if that didn't work, THEN she'd think about the whole building a shelter thing. But he'd asked what she would do in that situation and, welp, that's what she would do!

Nora had just finished gathered all the required materials and hauled them back to her workstation, when the lesson got underway. Seeing as she was situated near the door and hadn't been expected it to be closed with the help of magic, she was somewhat startled to hear the soft click and close. Oh, magic. When will I ever get used to you?

She listened to the hypothetical question then looked back at her cardboard. Well, she wouldn't get very far with this, would she? One good gust of wind or rainfall and down it would go! She had a feeling the cardboard was just for the lesson, though. She reddened a little as she raised her hand. "So, uhh, I don't have a really big background in magic, so I don't know any spells to use," she admitted. "If there's one to turn these pieces of cardboard into a tent or something, though, I'd use that one." Others seemed to know actual spells and incantations, but Nora had zero magical background whatsoever.

Well, that was an interesting scenario. Yukie thought it over because....because she honestly would not think of building shelter right away if she were stuck in the wilderness. So you know, while she appreciated any scenario to help her think, Yukie did not exactly resonate with it at the moment, and also because she'd never put herself in that kind of situation. She liked adventure, but even that is too much. Sorry, professor!

But it didn't mean she wouldn't try. Yukie knew some spells that would be helpful in building generally, not just for lost-in-the-wilderness purposes, so she raised a hand. "Vinea Funiculus, professor. The spell turns vines into ropes, useful for holding and tying things together," the Hufflepuff offered. It had been similar to what that older Ravenclaw girl (Mouse) said. Though, truthfully, she'd try to find her way out using a navigation spell like the Four-Point spell. If there was a way in, there was definitely a way out. Oh, and also apparition...if she knew how to do that.

Freddie simply dropped the contents on his desk slightly reckless, since carrying it all in one go left him rushing in an effort to not drop any on the floor and possibly trip over them. Once they were set down, he separated them by type as fast as his hands could, pausing to hear words in his ear.

"I agree. We should also keep some extra samples behind," Freddie whispered back to Atlas. Double taking at his appearance, "Also, you missed a spot," Particularly on his upper back, so he took his wand to Tergeo it away before lightly swiping it with his hand. "That's better," Turning away feeling good as usual as Professor Carton began the lesson with the question.

"Well, I would have to cut some wood with Diffindo to help make a fire and the basic walls for shelter." If he knew he was stranded, then he would just make something comfortable until planning an escape.

Jasper was busy balancing a pipe cleaner under his nose when the first question was posed. Wanting to see if he could manage his balancing act whilst moving, he raised his hand and offered a question with the pipe cleaner still in place. Heh. Talent.

"If I had magic, sir, I'd just grab my broom and get the hell out of there." He wasn't meaning to be difficult. It was just the honest truth. And what if he didn't have his broom with him? Impossible. It was always on his person.

Damn.

He dropped the pipe cleaner!

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon nodded at Jude, surprised that he'd asked. But then again, Jude was a very caring person. "I'm fine." He paused. "The set up is different." It bothered him. But at the same time, it gave him more clues about the lesson. So that was good? They appeared to be going down an art-project-meets-survival-scenario idea. It sounded... interesting. "You could build a shelter the muggle way. But one thing it's harder to do without magic is keep the shelter warm, dry, and in other ways safe. Especially if you don't have supplies to help. You could use a spell to hide your shelter, or to insulate or waterproof it."

His answer done, Brandon realized that his answer- and most answers- didn't involve transfiguration. What sort of transfigurations could help with building a shelter??? He thought about it, sorting all of the responses into 'transfiguration' and 'not transfiguration' in his notebook.

Seated next to her housemate (Mouse), Lisa pondered the Professor’s question. Stuck. In the wilderness? What would she do? The thought reminded her of some nightmares she had the first few times the Nam’s had gone camping when she was between the ages of six and seven. The one where the really scary creature tried to eat her. Meep… well if she had had magic back then or knew of it, the nightmares could have been much, much different.

This scenario she had to build the wilderness. A few of the answers that she heard caused her to nod. She did chuckle at Jasper’s comment. Naturally he’d get on his broomstick and fly away.

Professor, I believe there was a sleeping bag conjuring spell. Then I’d conjure a blanket or something to use overhead as a makeshift tent?” she supplied. Conjuration seemed like the best path forward.

Keighley's smiled towards her brother only brightened all the more in response to his. That boy could brighten up her life even on her worst day. And the professor's chuckle at her greeting hadn't gone unnoticed either.

With her supplies laid out neatly on the table in front of her, Keigh put all of her attention onto the professor when he began the lesson. What would she do if she was stranded in the wilderness and needed shelter? Well, honestly there was so much that she would want/need to do. "Not wanting to repeat what's been said already, maybe the cushioning charm to use on the ground where I'd be sleeping so it's more comfortable?" Magic would be extremely helpful if she had her wand available to her during a situation such as that.

As with all the hypothetical questions he asked in his classes, Norman expected some creative answers with this one. Right off the bat, he was not disappointed! Durand’s answer earned an approving nod. “Theoretically yes,” he replied, “though you’d need to be very careful with your aim since you’d be working with a smaller target than Incarcerous usually handles.”

For the record, Norman had no idea what game Valentine was talking about, but the girl was on to something with the idea of making objects fly into place. “You could,” he said with a nod. “A levitation charm could help you with that.” Not a spell they’d be learning in this class, though. This was transfiguration, not charms.

Every time Norman used a hypothetical question in class, there was always at least one answer that reminded him he should’ve been clearer with the scenario. Schultz’s answer had him stifling a chuckle. “Valid point, Miss Schultz,” he replied. Not exactly what he had in mind with this question, but it wasn’t wrong. “What if there was nobody around to see your sparks, and you had no choice but to build a shelter? What could you use then?”

For someone without a background in magic, Collins was on the right track. In fact, she had very nearly guessed one of the spells they would be using today. “Good idea,” Norman said with a slight smile. “What you’ve described is an example of a transformation spell. Transformation can be useful in a situation like that.” But he’d come back to that later.

Speaking of transformation spells, Rasting also provided a good example of one. The answer got an approving nod from Norman. “Yes, that spell can be useful for building,” he said. Assuming one was in an environment with vines, of course.

Norman half-expected the next student’s answer to continue the pattern of transformation spells, but that didn’t happen. McLeod went in a completely different, though still pertinent direction. “Sound reasoning,” he replied, nodding.

Between Botros’s pipe cleaner balancing act and answer to the question, Norman once again had to stifle a laugh. These kids and their loopholes! The faintest smile cracked his usual stoic expression as he replied, “Yes, that’s one way to go about it. What if you couldn’t grab your broom though? When Fox mentioned building the non-magical way, Norman thought this was going to be another loophole answer. He was pleasantly surprised when the boy tied in a magical element at the end. “All good uses of magic in that scenario,” he replied.

Here was an answer Norman hadn’t expected! No matter how many years he taught, he never ceased to be amazed by these kids’ outside-the-box thinking. “That could work, yes,” he said with a nod. It wasn’t technically building anything, but still a reasonable use of magic in that situation.

While all of the students’ answers had been more or less correct, only one had guessed the lesson’s subject. Norman nodded, giving the elder Anders a slight smile. “Yes, that’s a very useful spell for building,” he said.

Norman’s bluish-green eyes scanned the room in search of any more hands in the air. When he saw none, he took it as his cue to move on. “Excellent answers!” He addressed the class. “When building with transfiguration, there are two ways one can go about it. You can conjure materials, or you can transform something else into them. Today we’ll be focusing on transformation. We’ll be working with three spells, each designed to transform objects into a specific type of building material. The first is one that Mr. Anders mentioned, Temran Madera.”

He paused for a few moments to allow time for that information to sink in before continuing, “This spell turns an object into a wooden board or plank. To cast, make a horizontal line with your wand and say the incantation, Temran Madera.” He picked up a piece of cardboard from the box on his desk to demonstrate. “Temran Madera,” he said, moving his wand in a decisive horizontal line. In an instant, the cardboard was gone, replaced with a wooden plank of the same size.

Setting the cardboard aside for now, he flicked his wand at the chalkboard, and the spell information appeared on the board. “Take the next ten minutes to practice this spell on your cardboard - only the cardboard. We’ll be doing something else with the pipe cleaners and buttons. You may begin NOW!”

OOC: Sorry for the delay... got super sick last night. This is the start of the main activity. This activity will be divided into three parts, each focusing on a different spell, to avoid an overwhelming amount of info all at once. There is no post requirement; whether you choose to make multiple posts or a single one after all 3 spells have been revealed is up to you. The only rule is you must attempt each spell at least once for credit. After that, you don’t have to rp each subsequent attempt, since there are many multiples of each item. A brief reference (e.g. Billy cast Temran Madera X more times until all his cardboard had turned into planks) is fine.

For part 1, your student must cast Temran madera on their pieces of cardboard. You’ll have about 3 DAYS for this activity in all; the next spell will go up in ABOUT 24 HOURS. If your student needs help, indicate in the title of your post; Norman and I will be checking in throughout. As always, feel free to VM or PM me with any OOC questions.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jude wouldn’t be a good friend to Ashley and Brandon, would he, if he didn’t ensure that the younger Fox was alright. The set up? He spared the room a glance, reasoning that perhaps Brandon took time to adjust to changes in general. The little Puff need not worry though; Jude was quite good with younger kiddos and was confident he could provide Brandon with any form of help if needed.

The boy looked down at the supplies they all had been asked to gather prior to the lesson. So, what? They were transfiguring stuff that was going to be useful in the wilderness? Or someplace else? Whatever it was, colour him intrigued! Okay, at least he had gotten one of the spells correct with regard to what they’d be learning today. There were vivid ideas about what the others may be but for now, it was practice time!

“Nudge me if you need help,’’ Jude told Brandon. Like… literally nudge him since they were right next to each other. “The same goes for you, Keigh.” And with that, the practice began. “Temran Madera. Temran Madera.” It was kind of nice, the way the incantation rolled off of his tongue. The horizontal line with the wand was even easier.

“Temran Madera!’’ Despite being a seventh year, Jude still had trouble with certain spells especially when it came to Transfiguration. The subject happened to be his weakness so there was always that extra mile he had to go when practicing. “Temran Madera!’’ Four tries later there still was no transfigured cardboard. This made him all the more determined. “Temran Madera!’’ Finally! A board! Triumphantly, it was set aside so that the other cardboards could be worked on.
