Default Eeylops Owl Emporium

Eeylops Owl Emporium strives to provide witches and wizards, young and old, with the necessities required to properly look after an owl, whether that be with packets of food or just a cage. Once you enter through the door you enter a world of chirping birds and rows upon rows of owls, ranging from the adorable tawny owl to the unique screech owl. Big or small, cute or ugly, quiet or obnoxious, each one would like a caring and loving home.

On either side of the rows of caged owls, adorning the walls are shelves. These shelves hold all of the things under the sun that you could ever what for your owl. Lining the first set of shelves are many jars of weird looking insects, ranging from stick insects to your plain ordinary green fly. The owls will eat any of these insects, so take your pick and buy as many as you want. Above the insect jars are an assortment of boxes all holding different sized packets of owl pellets. These are fun-sized little bits of food that are perfect for an owl. Dotted along either side of the shop, alongside the shelves are big boxes, contain an assortment of little cuddly toys and other little trinkets that will allow you to care for your owls every need.

Toward the back of the shop, a straight line from the door, where the shopkeeper is waiting to assist you. As you reach the back you notice that, like the rest of the shop, it looks old fashioned, maybe a bit rustic, but don't criticize for the shopkeeper loves their shop just as much as anything. When you're ready to cash out, go ahead, wait in line, and you'll be ready to leave with your new owl in no time at all.

SPOILER!!: inventory

This shop is owned by an NPC and is a part of the IC Shopkeeper initiative. For details, please see this thread.

I'm afraid I can't help you with your toad either.” She laughed lightly. “I'm not a creatures expert. The only pet I have is a cat.” Very generic, but Rowan adored her little Helix and was so relieved to find she could take him to Hogwarts with her. If she failed in making friends, she would at least have the furball to keep her company.

She looked at the army of owls again and nodded hesitantly. “I need one.” Unfortunately. “..So I can communicate with home when I'm at school.” She looked at the small owl, still with it's back to her. “I like a challenge. But I think you might be right.”

She looked from the touchy feely girl to the boy. Were these two boyfriend and girlfriend? They seemed very.. close. 'Solomon Duck' - Rowan actually grinned at that. “That is a fantastic name.” She meant it genuinely. Was Duck a wizarding name? She'd never ever heard of it before, but it was delightful nonetheless. “Do you prefer Solly or Solomon?”

“I'm starting in September.” She replied to the pair. So, no, she didn't have a house yet. The girl was Ravenclaw? She must be intelligent. “I'll be going into fourth year.” Like Solly here. “My mum was a Gryffindor.. but I'm not sure I fit the bravery requirement.” She chuckled softly. Hufflepuff material? Nahh.. “I'm pretty sure I'll be either a Ravenclaw or Slytherin.. but who knows.” A shrug of the shoulder. “So I might be seeing a lot more of one of you.”

She had almost forgotten about her bleeding finger when the shopkeeper approached. Feeling embarrassed all over again that he'd overheard things, she raised her hand, blush rising in her cheeks once again. “That was me.. Sorry.” She added the apology, knowing full well she shouldn't have been sticking her fingers into the cages. She held out her finger to him, which had now stopped bleeding, but it still stung and burned.

“I need an owl.. but I really don't know where to start.” She informed him softly.

Woops-a-daisy!

Had he forgotten to make it known that he worked here yet again? Folks, I kid you not, but Rafael was notoriously famous among his coworkers for this. Oh well. The important thing was the visitors to Eeylops eventually figured it out, much like this young lady {Aurora} who was happily telling him about her owl. “Flora sounds lovely already. How old is she?” See, one of Rafa’s absolute fave things was learning about the owls that were the companions of any human.

Was there ever the need to be embarrassed about being nipped by an owl. It happened to the best of them, even to caretakers. Rafa had a few healing wounds to prove it; one might think that being a caretaker would mean he was a pro at avoiding being nipped, scratched or pecked. “No need to apologise, young friend.” Rafael examined the finger. “Good news! It doesn’t seem as though there will be any lingering scars. May I?” He gestured at her hand, seeking permission to hold it. “I need to clean the cut first then we can put a bandaid on it.”

Unsure of the type of owl she wanted? Rafael smiled, having heard these words ever so often. “Are there any breeds you’re particularly fond of? If not, I suggest a barn, or tawny owl. Any owl of any species you choose will make a remarkable companion.” Trust him, he would know as he and the other trainers worked hard to ensure each of Eeylops’ owl were well behaved.

Solomon shot a look over towards Rowan when the shopkeeper came over asking about her bite, knowing that she didn’t want him to see or fuss. He would’ve said something but he felt that would probably cause even more fuss. See? He was smart sometimes. “Already got one, too.” He said flatly to the shopkeeper. “I just need some treats, the ones with the added vitamins.” Because they did care for it really.

Woah, woah, woah… FOLLOWING her?

I was NOT!” Solly replied a little defensively. And no, they weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend but Aurora was one of his girlfriends, if that made sense. He didn’t really have guy friends, oddly. “I saw you and thought I’d say hello, but then I got, erm… distracted.” As per. If Aurora was kidding then it had gone completely over Solomon’s head.

He chuckled a little, not because he found anything funny, though. “Uh, yeah, what she said.” Although he didn’t much appreciate the comment about his house. “Hey, being in Slytherin is cool.” Cooler than being in Ravenclaw but he wouldn’t say that to spare Aurora’s feelings. Something she should try!!!

As Rowan’s blush faded, Solly’s own cheeks reddened upon hearing the words you’re kind. It was something that came quite naturally to him, actually, he had a lot of empathy but only when he was paying attention. However, it being brought up was a little embarrassing. “Thanks.” That’s all he could decide to say really, but he smiled. “So are you.” This was improvement over his usual response to a compliment of “not as [insert adjective here] as you.” Poor Anna had received that a few times.

No,” he laughed a little, “me neither. Wait until you have to deal with the Monster Book of Monsters every creatures lesson.” Well, not every lesson, and perhaps she had seen said book before. Solomon hated dealing with the thing. He pointed to a sleeping owl beside the biting owl, “That one looks alright.” As okay as an owl could look, that is.

All this talk of books about monsters did beg the question of where Rowan went to school before starting at Hogwarts, but conversation soon changed to houses, then remembering that Aurora had already introduced his house. “Well I’ll save you a seat next to me if you did get the pleasure of Slytherin.” No doubt Aurora would smother the girl if she ends up in Ravenclaw.

His smile disappearing slightly as he wondered if she was low-key making fun of his name. He was soooooo used to that. “Happy with either but everyone chooses Solly, usually.” Apart from Anna. Everyone else were people who couldn’t make it to the end of his name.

Solomon was so very easy to wind up, even unintentionally. The little blonde giggled at his response, leaning into his side with the arm she had looped in with his. “You’re so silly” she booped him on the nose. “I was only joking and you should stop being so easily distracted or one day someone is going to turn you into a ferret!” The irony being that Aurora herself acted like a puppy distracted by a particularly great smell sometimes and didn’t linger on one thing for too long. How she finished her homework sometimes was questionable.

Once again, he was so easy to tease. “ALL the houses are great. Hufflepuff gets to be near the kitchens and Slytherin has a view under the lake and Ravenclaws and Gryffindors live in the towers where the view is spectacular!” Big word. Not that the Common Rooms were particularly the deciding factor when it came to which house was the best but it helped. “But it does mean there’s a loooooot of stairs to compete with.” She was sure she spent half her time at Hogwarts skipping up and down the staircases to lessons. It was no wonder that despite the quantity of ice cream she consumed that she managed to stay slim.

The ‘requirements’ for each of the houses weren’t exactly once size fits all anyway. She turned to Rowan who was suggesting she might not be brave enough to be a Gryffindor. “That’s okay. I’m not smart enough to be a Ravenclaw and I don’t much like reading either but the Sorting Hat put me there anyway.” Could’ve been slightly influenced by the pleading to be sorted into the same house as her mums and sister. Besides, Aurora was curious and inquisitive and what she lacked in booksmarts she made up for enthusiasm and interest.

Sorry Mr Shopkeeper Man but once you’ve started a conversation with one Aurora Ackerly, it was very hard to get out of it. If there was an award for being able to talk for England and the ability to go off on as many tangents as possible it was likely that Aurora would win. “She’s 3 and I’ve had her for 2 years now, I got her before my first year. She’s only tiny bit she’s actually really good at flying fast and it means I can fit her into small places so she doesn’t take up much room. Which is good because I also have a Pygmy Puff called Merryweather but I don’t have her right now because my best friend looks after her when we are home from school. We have a sort of co-parenting arrangement because I think my Ma’s cat might eat her if she lives with us.” See? Tangents.

As a kid, Ascella fake fed her stuffed turtle, Ella, at home and talked to her about anything under the sun, even when she knew she wouldn't get a response or a reaction. So this decision was easy to make, and she knew she won't regret it.

With the door now open, courtesy of Dad, the eldest Archer kid walked into Eeylops, gently tugging her mum along by hand. "What species would you recommend?" Ascella looked up at both her mum and dad. She had a short list of owl species that she liked, but there were many factors to consider and, since Mum and Dad knew more about taking care of owls from their experience, she trusted them.

Ascella Paige Archer was very serious about her soon-to-be role as owl owner, can't you tell? Just wait until she tells her younger siblings everything about this trip when they arrive home!

Thankfully, though, she was able to compartmentalise. No doubt she would unpack all of her emotions later that night with Brian, but right now she focused on her daughter and the look in her eyes as they approached the shop.

“Ascella makes a very good point,” she said seriously, meeting Brian’s gaze. Her tone was light, though, playing along with the joke. The things Ascella said – and all of her children, really – always amused her, and this was no exception. The way children looked at the world was fascinating. They were always making points that she hadn’t even thought of herself. Isobel supposed this was because they were able to look at things without getting caught up in all the details that adults did. They always cut right to the chase, for better or for worse.

For some reason, this was the thought that had Isobel choking back a hiccup of a sob. So much for compartmentalising, she thought. Still, she smiled through it all. Look how grown up her baby girl was! She was endlessly proud, and she would be here all day if she thought about all the reasons why.

“That depends on you, I think, love,” she said in response to Cella’s question and gave her hand a squeeze. She had no doubt that Ascella would have done her own research and, really, she wanted her daughter to trust her own instincts, but she could easily understand why she wanted their opinion. “Do you know what temperament you want?”

The chaos of Eeylops brought back so many memories, but most of all, the memories of bringing Hermes home for the first time. Brian stopped dead in his tracks at one point, looking directly at a Barn Owl who was eyeing him suspiciously. But no, Brian. Hermes was long gone, and this was just another owl.

Ascella's quip brought him back to life, and he chuckled even as Isobel conceded her point. Two-way mirrors did not hoot or ruffle their feathers, indeed. But still. "Are you sure? You could call me and I'll hoot and ruffle my hair at you, if you want."

But he did catch his wife's eye as he heard her hiccup back a sob. He heard that. Offering her a commiserating smile, he followed them both into the shop, closing the door carefully behind them.

"I don't know either, Peach," he said, nodding as Isobel asked about temperaments. "I don't have any recommendations -- it's like asking me what spell is best, or what flower is prettiest. I might have my opinions, but they're about what I like best for me. You need to see which owl you like best for you -- it's going to be your friend, first and foremost."

"Why don't you take a look at the owls here and see who seems friendliest?" he said, gently nudging her forward, towards the displays.

Default Solly, Aurora and Rafael <3 Long post! Sorry.
Yeahhh, Mr White! Yeah science!

Rowan looked between Aurora and Solomon as the blonde girl teased him and he got defensive. It was an odd feeling being in the company of two people who seemed to know each other like the back of their hands. And there was Rowan, just observing. The new kid at school. Their friendship and the way the bounced off each other was infectious though, and she liked the idea of getting to know each of them better.

Rowan was ninety percent certain she was going to be in either Slytherin or Ravenclaw, but maybe the hat knew something about her that she didn't know. Her dad—her blood father-- had been a Slytherin. The pair had a lot in common despite having never met until a few weeks ago. Aurora's description of the houses locations piqued her interest. “The views from up in the towers must be extraordinary.” The breaking dawn, the views of the grounds on a sunny day, the snow, the sunsets.. It made Rowan want to beg the hat to allow her into Ravenclaw.. she would be more than happy to contend with the stairs.. but.. “I'd rather just leave it all up to the hat. I'm sure it knows better than I do.”

As for Aurora's intelligence, Rowan's first impressions of her was that she wasn't not clever. She could talk ten to the dozen. Her brain worked swiftly in the art of conversation. A stream of constant thoughts, all flowing from her verbally. “You seem pretty smart to me. You gave me good advice in how to deal with owls.” Rowan offered diplomatically.

She noted Solly's mirroring blush and offered him a soft, reassuring, smile in return. There was no need to be embarrassed over honesty. And he returned the compliment to her. “You barely know me.” She said gently, no harshness in her voice. She was tempted to pat his arm but that would be far too familiar with someone you had just met.

She had clearly made the wrong assessment over his owl expertise, however, and her eyes widened slightly at the mention of that Creatures Book. “I have that book! I've had to lock it in a box and hide it in the bottom of my wardrobe under a pile of other books. It's terrifying.” Care of Magical Creatures was already daunting to the redhead without having to contend with man-eating books. It made bitey owls look like fluffy little angels in comparison! She followed Solly's finger to the sleeping owl. “Maybe.” Maybe. They were quite sweet when they were sleeping.

As mentioned before, this boy was kind, and Rowan thanked him saving a seat for her at the Slytherin table. There was a strong possibility she would end up there. She meant what she said about his name too, no teasing whatsoever. “Solly it is then.” An affirmative nod of the head.

The shopkeeper, fortunately, was good natured over the whole owl biting incident. His gentle manner put Rowan at ease, and she didn't mind a little bit of fuss from him. She nodded, allowing him to take her hand. “I was expecting a healing spell.” She said honestly with a small chuckle. “But a bandaid will work just as well.”

As for an owl. “I do like the little owlets.. but I'm not sure they're appropriate. I live in the muggle world and need something that can stay with me in my room during the school holidays. And something that will get along with a small cat.”

Would a barn or tawny owl fit that requirement?

"Why don't you take a look at the owls here and see who seems friendliest?" he said, gently nudging her forward, towards the displays.

Not in a smug way or anything, but Ascella did know she made a good point. When your parents are both educators, and when your dad is a huge nerd from whom you learned how to cite sources and to create convincing slideshow presentations, you pick up many things along the way, and that included being convincing. Or at least, to stand your ground when the evidence can support it well. She grinned at her mum for having her back there. "You're not an owl or a two-way mirror, Dad." He was silly. Were dads always like this? At least she knows her dad was! "And you wouldn't even fit a cage if you tried! Right, Mum?" Or her trunk, if he wanted to be a mirror instead. But that didn't matter because he was neither a mirror nor a trunk, and Ascella much preferred her dad to just be dad.

But they didn't come all the way here to joke about her dad wanting to hoot and ruffle his imaginary feathers. They came here for her pet owl! Her future pet owl, who was among many of these beautiful owls in the displays before her. How she would be able to keep herself from wanting more than one pet would be a miracle, but she knows very well that one pet was enough. She only needed one. "Maybe just an owl that's nice to everyone in the family and wouldn't mind listening to my stories all night," Ascella offered.

"Yeah, okay, I'll just..." She bit her lower lip as she attentively observed some of the owls. Mum and Dad were right, though, they always were. She might have to check out and see for herself which owl liked her enough to be her feathery friend for life. Ascella then turned towards the shopkeeper, waving at him with a smile and then gesturing that she was going to take a closer look at the owls, before she stepped forward near a pygmy owlet and an eagle owl. "Hi, there. Hi!" Ascella wiggled her fingers in a little greeting at the birds, trying not to be look too excited...but kind of failing at it. Because she was truly excited, and could they blame her?

She’s only tiny bit she’s actually really good at flying fast and it means I can fit her into small places so she doesn’t take up much room. Which is good because I also have a Pygmy Puff called Merryweather but I don’t have her right now because my best friend looks after her when we are home from school. We have a sort of co-parenting arrangement because I think my Ma’s cat might eat her if she lives with us.” See? Tangents.

Treats for the one called Solomon/Solly. Rafael acknowledged that with a nod as he continued examining Rowan’s hand. Multitasking always was a skill that was useful for a job like this. “What type do you have?” he asked the boy, not only to make conversation but also for Rowan, since she needed some assistance on the matter.

Rafael chuckled heartily as he listened to Aurora. Her chattiness made him glad he had asked her about her owl. “You’re a creature lover then? Your Ma’s cat doesn’t bother your owl? What colour is Merryweather?” Rafa had questions of his own because he LOVED creatures SO DARN MUCH! Aurora was more than welcome to continue chatting about the creature babies in her life.

Listening to the conversation the trio was having as he worked to now clean out the cut on Rowan’s finger, the adult could not help but smile. Rafa was slipping back to his own school days at Castelobruxo. Those were wonderful days indeed. He was, however, particularly interested in hearing about the Hogwarts Houses. There was always something new about that Castle to be learnt from students! Looking up at Rowan, he winked. “I figure that having a bandaid will remind you not to go putting your finger next to an owl’s beak unless you've bonded with it.” His tone was light and good natured but he certainly did not want to see her getting hurt again.

With a muttered incantation, Rafael expertly cleansed the cut of any debris and bacteria then wrapped the finger in a bandaid patterned with screech owls. “There you go! You’ll be good as new in no time.” And now, back to the head scratcher. Then again it wasn’t such a head scratcher for him. “Tawny owls are always a hit. They are right over there.” Rafa gestured to the section of the Emporium dedicated to tawnies. “I can introduce you to them. I solemnly promise there will be no pecking involved this time, my young friend.”

Oh, Rafael could not agree more there, dad.

As far as he was concerned, the girl had received the best advice: she needed to decide which owl would best suit her. There was no better way in doing this than browsing the well trained owls of Eeylops. Seeing her wave at him, Rafa’s face went into its usually cheery smile. “Hi, hello!” Ooh, he LOVED that enthusiasm of hers! “Just be careful not to put those fingers too close. The owls are well trained, of course, but every living things get startled at one point, right?”

So…

“Pygmy owlets and eagle owls are what you’re most interested in?”

Looking through the glass, her nose almost touching it, she watched them in their cages as they moved, stretching, longing for the freedom that came with the open air. She could relate. She missed her family but all in all, was happier now than she’d been in a long time, even if it wasn’t going to last forever.

Unable to simply stand outside any longer, the soon to be first year Hogwarts student gingerly entered. Unlike how she’d entered Ollivanders, she pushed the door open hesitantly, not wanting to startle the birds on show here. Even as she did so however, it became clear to her that the other families and their children were far louder than her, infinitely more annoying and definitely more distracting. Her meagre entrance hadn’t even solicited more than a glance from one or two owls it seemed. She didn’t mind. No. Soon, she’d have one of her very own!

Even from a young age, Sloane had prided herself in her ability to talk other people into doing the things that she wanted. It was a gift. She always knew the right words to say at the right time. Despite this, even she had been surprised at how easily Zoryn and Faith had agreed to buy her an owl! Sure, she couldn’t complain when they didn’t buy her something else she wanted, but there wasn’t anything else she really wanted and if there was…well, her pockets were pretty deep.

Swerving in and out of the people already in there, the dusty blonde eleven-year-old headed straight for the rows of cages. She simply had to get a better look. It was almost overwhelming how many different types of owl was on offer and the colours they came in! She really had no idea which one to get because in truth, she would have taken them all if she’d been allowed. Still, she had a limit of 10 galleons so the real question was…which two owls would she buy for 5 galleons and how long would it take her guardians to say no?

Another potential customer!

Business certainly boomed during the summer and Rafa felt he and his coworkers more than deserved a raise each year for assisting in raking in the dough for this fine establishment. The pre-teen seemed rather cautious about entering Eeylops, Rafa kept an eye on her, even though he was busy refilling water troughs at the moment since she seemed to be alone.

“Hi, there!’’ The man called to the girl as she approached the section of owls he was working at. “See any that takes your fancy?”

Alyx Stone strode into the Owl Emporium looking for a pet owl. She saw the many breeds of owls and saw that they were very unique looking but very eerily beautiful. She didn't know the first thing about keeping a pet owl, but she was excited to learn. "Hi, Can someone help me? I'd like to buy a pet owl to bring to my first year at Hogwarts." She looked at one of the Wood Owls available on the menu. "Can someone show me what a Wood Owl looks like?" She was excited to begin the first step of her quest to becoming a magical student by purchasing an owl.

Rafa pulled his dragonhide gloves from his hands to stuff them into a back pocket. The traffic into Eeylops seemed to be winding down for now and he fully was now making the most of that by taking a breather. Gulping down some water, he allowed his gaze to wander around at the cages, many of which were now empty due to all the sales done today. There would be much training to come shortly to refill said empty cages.

The water bottle was lowered when there was another youngster asking about owls; Wood owls, to be exact. “Hey!’’ Still bouncing with energy despite a tiring feeling creeping up upon his, the owl caretaker replaced the bottle cap. “Those there are Wood owls.” He pointed in the direction of the cages that held chocolate-brown and spotted with black-edged white spots. “Want to take a closer look?”

As the people around her fussed, Sloane was busy standing still, taking in the variety of owls in all of their feathery glory. It was a hard decision for her, mainly because she’d never actually had to make a decision like this in her life! This was her very own owl and making the wrong decision would devastate her! Although deep down, she knew there wasn’t a wrong decision, per say. Feeling almost overwhelmed, and without her mother’s Zoryn and Faith, she was almost relieved that someone who worked at the shop had managed to find the time to come and talk to her.

“Hello!” she replied with a bright smile, her grey eyes moving from the owls to him now as he appeared in front of her. “Well, here’s the thing, I really want an owl and my…guardians…have said I’ve got ten galleons to spend on one!” This part really seemed to please the budding witch, as he could most likely tell from the smug expression written all over her face. Brushing stray whisps of her dusty blonde hair out her face, she continued “They’re going to come in here later and I need you to help me convince them that me owning two owls would be a much better idea than me owning one,” her expression the picture of innocence now. “Do you think you could pretty please do that.”

That was quite a fair bit of galleons for one to spend on an owl, and there were owls that fell within the limits of the girl’s budget. Rafael was only too happy to show her all of the options. But… two owls? Colour him intrigued! It was with this level of curiosity. ”Why do you need two? They may not be high maintenance creatures but they do require their owner’s attention at times and balancing two might take some time for you to get used to. It might be best for you to start with just one.” This owlkeeper would not exactly recommend an eleven? year old to have more than one.

That means they can take care of themselves. They hunt, they preen themselves. His gloves? “Oh, these. Thank you. They’re regular dragonhide gloves that you’ll be required to use at Hogwarts.” The man chuckled. “Not to worry. We all have to start at one point; you'll be a pro at taking care of your owl in no time.”

This was one of those rare times when someone chose their owl fairly quickly. Rafael was impressed and quickly undid the catch on the cage. Gloves back on, he coaxed the owl onto his extended arm. “I think Isildur will be most happy being your familiar,’’ he told Alyx as they made their way to the counter. He already knew which cage would suitably house Isildur. “This size two cage is perfect for him.” With some coaxing, Rafa had the owl in its new cage. As he thought, the owl had enough room to be comfortable. As Alyx listed out all that she wanted, the owlkeeper set them on the counter beside the cage. “One perch, one food and water cup set, one claw clipper and… treats with vitamins. It’s important that your owl stays healthy.” Rafael began packing it all in a bag. “At least once a year, you should bring Isildur for his check up. That service is free.” He gave her a wide smile. “Thank you! I appreciate your kind words. Here are all your purchases; that’ll be twelve galleons, five sickles.”

If there was one thing about Rafael Melo that most persons would not believe, it was that he was not a fan of kids and teenagers. One would not know it, of course, by the smooth way in which he interacted with them. And because his boyfriend’s nephews were always trying to get their way with their adorable facial expressions, Rafa considered himself well versed in the art of resisting such cuteness overload.

Which was exactly what he was doing with this youngster, even if he was sympathetic about her plight. Was it an actual plight though? He could not tell and was not falling for the tear easily. Again… those nephews of Dash’s were the main reasons for this. “Hogwarts has a wide selection of capable owls,’’ he told Sloane gently. “Some even well seasoned in flying long distances and will meet the challenge easily. Now, I won’t stop you from having two owls on the condition that your parents or guardians give their approval.” Sorry, kiddo. But Rafael needed to make sure that any owl leaving Eeylops would be loved and well taken care of. He certainly didn’t know Sloane enough to make such a call.

[/COLOR]

As Sloane looked up at the man, her eyes with just the faintest hint of watery sadness, her face a mask of emotion, she couldn’t actually read the older man like she could with her siblings, although that was most likely because she knew them so well. His words made the situation painfully clear however. Despite this, it wasn’t as fruitless an exercise as it could have been. She may not be getting two owls but she did manage to learn more about Hogwarts, something that she didn’t know too much about.

Giving two small, sniffling nods to show she understood, Sloane looked down for a moment contemplating his words before finally looking up, only this time, the corners of her lips were a little more upturned. “Hogwarts has lots of owls?” Whilst she’d never technically lied to the shop keeper, her words now were about as true as they could be. Her brothers had told her so little about Hogwarts that most the trivial things to other kids who grew up in the wizarding world took for granted were fascinating titbits of information to her. “That sounds amazing! And can we just borrow them whenever we want?” curious now to see if she could borrow several at once for the many letters she planned on writing. “I’d still like my very own owl though, if that’s okay?! I will look after it, I promise.”

If she was being honest with herself, wanting the owl had less to do with the fact that it could carry letter and more to do with the fact that it would mean she could take a friend with her to Hogwarts. With a new home, new guardians and no brother, she felt so…alone. Having two friends would have been her preference but she’d settle with one. One owl to love and look after.

Uh…

What just happened? Did the nods mean that she was giving into his explanation? He was quite uncertain how in the world he had managed to convince her. Rafa still took pity on her though. With a murmur of an incantation, he conjured a tissue with the aid of his wand then held out the tissue. “That’s right!” he remarked, smiling broadly. It was obvious that Sloane had not been aware of this information. Nevertheless, he was only too happy to inform her; in any case, owls were a favourite topic of his. “You bet you can! There are always enough owls there in the Owlery for everyone to share. You just wait until your first owl post delivery in the Great Hall. You’re in for a treat!” Rafa would not say any more; his lips were sealed!

That we can do. Any particular type of owl you have in mind for your familiar? If not, I can introduce you to all the types we have here.”

It had been a year almost to the day since Sloane had been gifted Circe, her owl, by Faith and Zoryn. Not usually one to receive gifts from anyone, let alone a gift of this magnitude, Sloane couldn’t help but take care of Circe as best she could…by spoiling the owl.

With her longish, sandy hair up in a messy bun and a baggy hoodie coming down almost to her knees, Sloane wandered around Eyelops Owl Emporium with Circe on her shoulder, eyeing the various tonics and treats. The goal of today wasn’t to buy treats so much as to get Circe checked out to make sure that she was healthy.

Circe, as ever, was quiet on her shoulder, taking in the shop with a dignified expression, her head twisting and turning from one direction to another.
