Default Portraits

The walls in the first-floor corridor are covered in tapestries and, hung over them, are portraits of numerous witches and wizards. Whether you are trying to get to class or are just browsing around, the portraits here will try to start up a conversation with you. If you manage to get on their good side, they'll be willing to reveal secret passageways, share the latest school gossip, and more.

If you have time to spare, definitely go on a brief tangent from whatever it is you are doing. Google Stump is your man to go to if you're looking for answers about the mysteries of the castle; Beaumont Marjoribanks can tell you everything there is to know about gillyweed; and Elizabeth Burke ... well, it would be best to just avoid her for reasons that will be obvious should you strike up a discussion with her about magical blood status. There are other portraits here as well, each with their own unique personalities, and figures from other portraits happen to invade their frames from time to time.

OOC: Please do not role-play for the Portraits.

It did not actually occur to her that Logan could have considered her actually a friend, so the eyebrow raise at the word was not so much in her usual jest. "Are you calling Vasco a troll too?" Because that was the Thanatos that was actually his friend right? She was the sister. But had he brought up the adoption idea, she would have waved a hand at it because she had considered that often for Vasco and yet... they were clearly too similar to not have shared genes. Dang, twin thing.

She did know why it would be THAT weird. And yet... if someone were to ask her too to disclose anything about her tastes to Logan, or most people honestly, she would have made an excuse and scurried away. Despite the fact she was noticing people, she hadn't even talked to Maria or Sia on that matter and she didn't really have any plans to do so anytime. Though... that certainly didn't mean she didn't like to listen when they wanted to talk. She was weird, okay? Which would not have been surprising to the present company.

His snicker got a glare turned his way, though it didn't stay pointed on him for very long as the portrait continued to speak. Oh is that what they were doing? The facade of politeness dropped, and instead her arms crossed over her chest as she straightened to her full height, intending to not look as intimidated as she had originally feared. "As magical beings, wouldn't someone with veela blood actually be magically superior than a witch or wizard?" The 'impure blood' speeches were old and tired, and she had zero patience for them. Especially when technically, she was half blooded herself - even if a second generation. But Papa was the best person she knew and any insinuation against that was intolerable. "I also don't see what's so impressive about a lineage full of inbreeding. I mean, to have fully pure blood would be pretty difficult without that at this day and age. I think it's easier if we just let the ridiculous idea of blood status die with the bitter, inconsequential old folks who thought their blood made them at all memorable." She did attempt a small sweet smile here.

She was all too happy to turn her full attention back to Logan again, giving a nod in full agreement at his words. "I think you're probably right. She doesn't look very knowledgeable anyways even if she was in a better mood."

Tell Them I'm Trapped in an Oil Painting

Elizabeth rolled her eyes, not surprised in the slightest that the boy had no idea who she was. Honestly, what was this school teaching?! "Then your time would be better spent brushing up on your history of magic," she snapped. She wrinkled her nose at the nickname. Clearly this one was in need of an etiquette lesson as well as a history one! "I'll have you know my name is not Ginger; it's Elizabeth! Elizabeth Burke, as in Borgin & Burke's. My family operates a shop in Knockturn Alley. What have you ever done?" Besides talk, she meant.

So much for the girl being the more respectful one! Elizabeth's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Who do you think you are to insult my lineage?" She spat. "In my day, people like you knew how to hold their tongue! Disrespect like that would've got you hung up by your thumbs in the dungeons. Merlin, I miss the old punishments!"

She also missed her wand and - well, being alive. It was rather difficult to teach brats like these a lesson without a body!

"Vasco? A troll? Totally not," Logan replied, not at all surprised that Vera had asked such a question. The smirk still remained. "Didn't they tell you that you were adopted? It's very fortunate that the transfiguration spells and whatnot to keep you looking human are still intact." As for her raised eyebrow, he didn't comment on it. Oddly enough, he did consider her a friend. But he had a lot of those, so her earning such a status really wasn't saying much.

Perhaps he would have pointed out the raised eyebrow and maybe make a remark to be careful before someone waltzed in and casted a charm that would make her face stay like that permanently. However, the undelightful portrait of Elizabeth Burke was taking up much of his focus. With every word she spoke, the blond really had to hold in the howls of laughter that were dying to be released. Absurd is what this woman was.

"Easy there, Ginger. There's no need to get your wand in a knot." Sure, the boy definitely needed to brush up on his history of magic. In fact, he needed to actually put a little more effort into staying awake in that class. Though he most certainly wouldn't be doing that if this lady was the topic of discussion. "And yikes. Borgin and Burkes? So you want people to know that you and your family are inbred and Dark Art fanatics? Definitely not something to be boasting about if you ask me."

The way Vera was handling herself was quite a sight. Logan had to admit that he was impressed, and he totally agreed with her. Lineage didn't really matter that much in the 22nd century. Or at least it didn't for people who had a brain inside their heads.

He was a bit caught up with the antics of the portrait to fully register that Vera had said he was probably right. Burke going on about lineage and disrespect and punishments was overly dramatic. "Definitely a waste of our time," he agreed. There was a short pause before he spoke again. "Think we should do everyone a favour and silence her?"

The adoption joke was not a new one, and she was gullible enough that were it not for the similar looks (and the fact they'd literally been together since womb) she might have been gullible enough to fall for it. She fought hard to not roll her eyes once again, instead keeping with her arms crossed over her chest. "Aren't you clever. And what transfiguration spells exactly would they even use for such a task?"

She listened to Logan talk to the portrait, her face contorting into a look as the woman bragged about being part of a family prominent in the Dark Arts. that was unsurprising given her earlier statements, but she still thought she was pretty irrelevant. At the question of what Logan's family did too, Vera considered boasting about them all for her fellow Gryffindor but decided he was more than capable of holding his own. Besides, if he chose to not divulge anything, it was probably because the old hag didn't deserve to know anything of the Paton's.

"Someone whose proud of my own." Blood didn't matter. She was certain she had more love than poor Elizabeth Burke ever received from her pureblood family - not if she was so obsessed with the idea that being 'pure' was an accomplishment. "Merlin's beard, you must be ancient. No wonder your opinion is so archaic. I guess we can cut you some slack for that. And the fact you're stuck here on this wall with no one to care enough to know your name. I guess it's more pitying than anything." She feigned sympathy, although perhaps maybe she did actually feel the smallest drop. Elizabeth Burke probably was just spewing what she'd been taught to.

"I'm open to silencing. Or maybe we stop dilly dallying and actually go work on our Transfiguration assignment?" They obviously were not going to find any veela here - and the whole purpose of the mission was a bit lost on her now that she'd been so thoroughly distracted.
