Default Mr Aguilar's Office

Located in a tower that overlooks the Training Grounds is Mr Aguilar’s office. This is where the flying instructor works when he is not teaching. One of the walls has a large window that provides an excellent view of the grounds, allowing misbehaviour and accidents to be spotted easily. Another wall is decorated with photographs of every single Quidditch team that he participated in, from his first year as a Beater in Castelobruxo to the most recent U14 team that he coached. Some of them are signed by the teammates or students who moved on to become well-known professional players. Next to this display is a cupboard that stores his personal brooms (he has quite a few) and the official school sports supplies that should not be tampered with. A shelf holding books, magazines and famous player figurines stands by the back wall, along with a rolling blackboard that will often show wiggling diagrams of broom game tactics.

When in his office, Aguilar usually sits behind a handsome desk beside the window. On the desk are some more photographs - though these are of his family and girlfriend - as well as a small flag of the Argentine team and a bowl of fresh fruits. If it is still early in the day, you may also see a copy of the Daily Prophet that he has not finished reading. He makes full use of the rest of the space by spreading out the material that he is working on. In front of the desk are two wooden chairs (that he built himself!) with cushioned seats. If you wish to speak to Mr Aguilar outside of lessons, please knock on the door and wait to be invited in.

Aguilar would have been too distracted to give a full lecture about the importance of hydration even if she said no. He looked out at the Training Grounds while he poured two glasses of water. It would only be a matter of time before the alliance followers took over the area reserved for Flying lessons too. The view outside his office window would no longer be peaceful then, he thought sadly. Returning to his desk, he handed Mamie the glass with a "here you go" and sat down.

Ah, yes! Quidditch Through the Ages. He chuckled, sensing that she was eager to tell him that she followed his advice. Despite everything, this cheered him up greatly. "I must say I'm impressed! Not many people willingly read non-fiction books about Quidditch. How did you like it?"

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Mamie took a sip of the water. Apparently walking all the way out here made her thirsty. Or maybe just...the constant threat to her existence made her thirsty.

She set the water glass down on the edge of the desk so she wouldn't drop it in her excitement, then made a face. "It was...informative," she said. She refused to say she liked it because. Well. It was boring. Non-fiction was really really boring, even if it was about Quidditch. Honestly, fiction was boring too, for the most part. Coloring books were her favorite kind of book. "Why are there so many fouls? Is it that hard to just play fair?"

The Hufflepuff in her was upset people didn't play fair. The competitive part of her was upset there were so many rules to work around. And all of her was upset that she wasn't currently playing Quidditch right now. And also she wanted to know how to sign up for those summer camps and youth leagues he had told her about, but...well, she knew she needed to ask her parents' permission first. And obviously that couldn't happen. So, no Quidditch for her in the foreseeable future, either. Real bummer, those Neo-Alliance creeps. At this point, it was questionable if she'd ever be allowed to fly again, much less play Quidditch.

"When's the next Quidditch World Cup? And how good do you have to be to play in the U17 league?" She paused for a sip of water, then remembered another. "Has anybody ever died in one of the youth leagues?" So many questions.

Camilo drank half the glass of water in one go - he had been walking around the castle for a long time - and did not see the face that Mamie made. He did notice her tone of voice (politely bored) when she said Quidditch Through the Ages was informative. That was it? The information was fascinating! Oh well, he was still glad that she gained new knowledge about the magical sport.

Like the vast number of fouls, for instance. "Easy for a Hufflepuff to say, eh? When some players get competitive in a game, they come up with all sorts of unfair ways to get the upper hand. Sometimes it's accidental though. I once committed the Snitchnip because my hand brushed against the Golden Snitch and I was a Beater," he smiled in reminiscence. None of the students had to know that he deliberately committed all seven common Beater fouls when he first made the Quidditch team at Castelobruxo. Hey, he was just a young boy who wanted to do well! He began to play fair after a detention and lesson on the importance of good sportsmanship, but just saying, he could kind of understand why some players wanted to cheat. Ahem. Anyway.

"The next Quidditch World Cup will be held in 2106. One has to try out to play in the U17 league, so only the best youngsters are selected. Many U17 players move on to play professionally." As for death ... "Nope. People rarely die playing Quidditch, and the youth leagues are particularly well monitored by, uh, good adults." He finished his glass of water after saying this. These were good questions! She must be interested in the youth Quidditch opportunities that he told her about.

Default well I'd already done the math...
Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Mamie's eyes got wide. It was still a foul if it was by accident?! She had not realized that. She should have, obviously in swimming you got disqualified for doing something wrong, and nobody ever did things wrong on purpose. Well, now she was wondering if they did do things wrong on purpose. For cheating purposes!?

"That doesn't seem fair!" she said, referencing the Snitchnip. Golden Snitches had a mind of their own, right? What if one just...flew at your hand when you were trying to catch the Quaffle!? Though . . . she supposed if that happened, a player would want to get out of the way to avoid being pummeled by the seekers. Maybe fouls did have a purpose. "Fouls are to keep people safe?"

She sighed. 2106 was a long way away. But, maybe she could ask her parents when she saw them next if she could go. By then, she'd be...fifteen! Surely her parents would let her attend if she were fifteen. "I guess...I probably won't make the U17 league," she said sadly. If she wasn't allowed a broom to practice, how was she ever going to get good enough to beat other kids for a spot. All she wanted was to do the Quidditch camps and leagues he had told her about, but she couldn't even ask her parents for permission. She barely even processed Aguilar saying people rarely die in youth leagues because of good adults.

Wait. Good adults?

Mamie raised her eyebrows at the professor. Good adults. Was there such a thing? As if good adults could protect children. Never mind that it was protecting them from falling, versus protecting them from...well. Rosier. Bad adults. Things worse than falling. Aguilar had at least kept them safe when the brooms were taking away mid-class, earlier in the year.

Luckily for him, neither of the novice Seekers had noticed when he accidentally almost caught the Snitch in that school match, so he was safe from any pummelling. As he was not thinking about the potential benefits of the Snitchnip, Aguilar initially did not quite understand what Mamie meant by fouls keeping people safe. "Accidental fouls are very rare, so I think it is right for all rule-breaking behaviour to be penalised. And ... fouls generally bring more harm than safety. But I do remember when I was watching a U14 game and this sweet little kid grabbed her opponent's broom tail to slow him down - Blagging, y'know - and a second later, lightning struck right where he would have been if he continued flying at high speed," he gestured with his hands as he told the story animatedly. She was right, some fouls did protect people!

"Hmmm. You don't know that yet," he frowned when she stated that she would not make the U17 league. Sure, it would be too optimistic of him to blindly encourage her given the circumstances ...

But this was too unfair. Not 'accidental Snitchnip' unfair, not even 'kind-hearted Blagging' unfair, this was injustice on an entirely different level, as Mamie's sad voice and raised eyebrows reminded him. Before he knew it, he abandoned all pretence of compliance and leaned forward slightly to say something that would get him in trouble had the Inquisitorial Squad been listening. "Listen, Mamie. I know it seems like this is the end of the world, but this won't go on forever, because the bad guys always lose. You'll get to fly again, you'll be a darn good flyer and you'll show them that they were wrong."

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Mamie shook her head, her braided hair thwapping against the side of her head. No, no, Aguilar misunderstood her comment about fouls and safety. "Like, 'cause it's a foul, it makes people not want to do it, so that's what makes them safe," she explained. Right? Except for the cheaters who were going to break the rules anyway. She snickered at his blagging story, though. Surely he made that up. Right? Riiiight?!?

She sighed dramatically because twelve-year-olds are dramatic as he tried to tell her she maybe could make the U17 league. Did these supposedly good adults not get it? She was never going to get to fly again, how would she ever be able to practice enough to make a competitive league?!

Her eyes widened then as Aguilar just...spoke his truth. Out loud. Did...she glanced behind her. The door was still closed, but would it stay closed? Those bad guys were everywhere. Was he trying to get them both hexed? Like...his words were nice, she appreciated the attempt to cheer her up, but like. The professors couldn't stop the bad guys. Who else would even stand a chance? "What...but...what if they don't this time? Wh-what if, what if they're right?" she asked him in the tiniest, shakiest voice. She wasn't being dramatic anymore, she was just scared. What would happen then?

"Oh, yes. You're right, the rules against fouls are to keep people safe, as well as promote sportsmanship," he nodded, correcting his misunderstanding. Honestly, common sense should be enough to discourage people from doing certain things like hitting a Bludger to the crowd or transfiguring a Chaser into a polecat, but no, they had to be threatened with penalties to show the least amount of respect for others. Unbelievable!

And then this conversation was no longer about Quidditch. Although he was certain that the Inquisitorial Squad was not eavesdropping through the enchanted office door/window/walls, Aguilar still wanted to keep this short. "They're not right and you know it. They outnumber us here, but in the outside world, there are way more people against them who will take them down and save us from this mess," he said in a hushed voice.

Did he believe everything he said? YES. Optimism kept him alive, quite literally these days.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Mamie wished Aguilar had kept them on-topic with Quidditch fouls, silly as it was that people needed fouls to keep them from being outrageously selfish in the sport, she was very very worried about the Inquisitorial Squad busting through his door. Or the floor, because it rhymed with door. They were like parents, you thought they wouldn't see or wouldn't hear but they had eyes on the back of their heads and superwizard hearing. They seemed to even know what people were thinking.

It was terrifying.

Maybe those Neo-Alliance folks just needed some Quidditch rules in real life. Like, to keep everybody safe and penalize people who did things that were not for the "greater good" but only for the good of the meanie-doxy-heads. It did not occur to her that was what laws were. Instead she sighed, again dramatically, and tried to believe what Aguilar said. It was hard to believe, though! She didn't have enough experience with the wizarding world outside Hogwarts to know if there was any truth at all in what he said.

But her little critical thinking skills were trying...if there were more people in the wizarding world who disagreed with the bad guys, they would have saved them already? It had been months! The only borderline logical conclusion Mamie could draw was that all the outside wizards agreed with them, and the bad guys had taken over the outside, too. The Neo-Alliance was in control here, the Neo-Alliance was in control there, the Neo-Alliance was in control everywhere.

Mamie did not say this out loud, though, because Aguilar seemed like he needed his li'l bit of hope. He was a Muggleborn, too, she remembered, so didn't he know everyone was terrible and there was no hope? She just looked at him skeptically, and took another sip of her water.

The fact that they were left in Hogwarts for months with the growing cult and no rescue attempt also worried Camilo. He had arrived at the same logical conclusion as Mamie that the Neo-Alliance took over the outside too, though it took him some time to accept this. There was no way to find out how bad things were in the wider wizarding world, so he kept the hope that there were still many good witches and wizards out there who had the freedom to act and speak as well as think (not under the Imperius Curse). It would be great if they would send help quickly - he was not sure what Rosier's ultimate plan was, but had the feeling that time was running out.

Mamie was right: he needed his lil bit of hope. He could tell that his words failed to convince her. If only he had some more time and evidence to back him up! For now, he had already said too much, so he would move on and hope he cheered her up a little.

"... So. What were we talking about? Oh yes, the great magical Quidditch teams of Britain and Ireland. Which is your favourite?" he changed the topic, leaning back in his chair and putting on a smile again. That conversation never happened, yes? And there was a right answer to his question Caerphilly Catapults FTW.

He was really going to go back and talk about Quidditch again like nothing was wrong? He was going to smile like everything was fine and they weren't dirt?? Mamie had missed her family for the holidays. Merlin, her family were Muggles, they probably had no idea why they couldn't contact her. She wondered if they'd reported her missing to the authorities. Donated all her clothes (she'd probably outgrown them already anyway). Held a funeral for their extended family. Put a little Margaret N. Turov, 2091-2103 headstone in their family burial plot.

She did not want to talk about Quidditch anymore.

"I don't have a favourite," she mumbled, sipping more water. Babulya said if you couldn't cry and drink water at the same time, right? RIGHT? Riiiigggghhht!??!!?

!!!!!

Clearly, he was terribly wrong when he thought that changing the topic to discuss Quidditch would cheer her up. It was one of the few things that he was passionate about these days, and he assumed the same for Mamie. If he knew that she was imagining her own headstone, then he would have known how upset she was and taken a different approach. Maybe. He felt that his usual empathetic self was oddly becoming desensitised to cruelty and suffering as the hostage situation continued. He did not even know how to react to his student trying to stop herself from crying in despair. If in normal circumstances he came across a child in emotional pain, he would offer to listen to them and give advice, but what more could be said here? It seemed that talking would only make things worse when they were both so distressed.

The smile gone from his face, he sat and gazed at Mamie for a moment before clearing his throat and saying softly, "Why don't you um, pick up another book, do some more research and come back next week? We can talk about this again in more depth." By which he meant thoughts, feelings, concerns. Not Quidditch.

Her water was all gone. Mamie set the empty glass down on Aguilar's desk, keeping her head down because she still had enough pride not to let him see her tears, even if it was super obvious she was audibly crying. So she didn't see his more sympathetic expression.

And he was gonna suggest she read more?! To cheer her up!?

Mamie nodded, she'd come back next week at least, still clutching the Quidditch Through the Ages library book, and stood up from the chair. "Th-thank you, P-pro-professor," she muttered, wiping her nose with her sleeve before turning and practically running out of the office.

That had gone downhill quickly.
