Default Astronomy Lesson One : TBA

For an early December evening, there is a touch of frost in the air. The astronomy tower however, is charmed as always this time of year to keep the room a nice and toasty warm. As exposed to the elements as it is. Professor Gert stands just inside the astronomy classroom door ready to greet students as they enter for this evening’s lesson. The room is set up much as it normally is, the desks mostly facing towards the woman’s desk and the exterior of the tower. Visible through the stone archways is the darkened night sky, the stars of the season quite clear upon their backdrop but if you pay enough attention, you’ll notice something is missing.

“Come in and sit doon,” she instructed with a welcoming smile. “We’ll begin in jos a few minutes. Help yerself to some hot chocolate,” the professor added nodding to the pot residing on the corner of her desk charmed to refill and stay hot, mugs stashed beside. Celeste knew how some of her students might need a boost to stay awake with her evening classes. The curious student might notice that there is nothing readily noticable inside the classroom to hint at what the lesson's topic might be for once.

ooc: Hello and welcome to Astronomy. With the IC time of year, remember this isn't their first lesson. So come on in and the lesson will be moving on in about 24 hours to begin

When Desiree heard what the correct answer was, she was so glad she hadn’t voiced either of her ideas. The lunar eclipse one would’ve been wrong, and the new moon one would’ve been repetitive. Either of which would’ve been lowkey embarrassing! She jotted down some notes on the new moon, taking a sip of her hot chocolate here and there, and listened to the next question.

Okay, so moon phases. Desiree liked this question a lot better because there was more than one right answer this time. She listened politely to her classmates’ answers while trying to come up with her own. Wait, Maria said there were four phases? Desiree blinked confusedly. She thought there was more than that! She sat quietly until something Brandon said jogged her memory. She tentatively raised her hand and said, “Does gibbous count as a moon phase? That happens when the moon is more than half visible, but not yet full. It can also be waxing or waning.”

Was that anywhere close to correct? Merlin, she hoped so!

Okay, it was the new moon--the dark o' the moon, as folks called it sometimes back home. But it could have been full, all the same, Hope thought to herself. Well, maybe she'd do better on the next question.

"I believe there are eight phases, and most of them have been mentioned already, but the other two are the waxing gibbous and the waning gibbous--that's when the moon looks sort of full, but not quite, because it's either just about to be full, or it's just finished being full. It looks kind of lumpy in that phase." Granny had all sorts of rules about when to plant and when to harvest certain things, all depending on the phases of the moon, so Hope was familiar with them by now.

Celeste had resumed her slow path around the tower room as she awaited the answers she would get, some likely certain while others could be unexpected. “Aye,” she said, confirming Aurora’s answer as the first one to speak up. “The full moon is the exact opposite point of the new moon in the lunar cycle. Where the sky is much brighter because you have the full circle of light refracted back to earth.” The mention of the full moon definitely one of the expected parts of the cycle.

“Aye and nah all at once,” she remarked to Maria who was next. “There are four primary phases which are the quarters like the first quarter ye mentioned. The full moon is the second quarter and the new moon is the fourth.” And then Charlie mentioned the third quarter gaining a smile and a nod from the professor. “Correct, Mr. Bergstrand” she accepted before looking bemused at Anna’s answer.

“Not quite…” Celeste mused, debating what to say on the topic. “The blue moon and that phrase usually refers to the last full moon of the year when, by the way the days fall, there happen to be thirteen over the course of the year rather then the usual twelve.” Which was always an interesting time, especially when other celestial phenomena coincide with such an occurrence. “This happens about once every two to three years.”

Ah there were a couple of phrases she wasn’t sure she could get. “Very good, Mr. Fox,” she remarked as the crescents were brought up. “Waxing crescent happens between the new and the first quarter…it’ll be what the moon will be working towards when the first sliver appears tomorrow.” The moon growing from its empty form. “The waning crescent before tonight as the moon slowly disappeared.”

And then Desiree and Hope rounded out the last of the phases, including the second near correctly numbering the phases as eight all total. “Aye to both of you. The gibbous are the mirror of the crescent moons. Waxing coming between the first quarter and the full and waning coming between the full and the third quarter."

--------------------------------

Stopping back at her desk, a train of thought came to mind as they moved on. “Interesting point of information, the blue moon I mentioned in answer to Ms. Wallas isn’t actually blue when it occurs.” It was first transcribed as such as a filler to go with the other names attached to full moons that happened every year. “But there are in fact times when our dear satellite looks like its changed color to a shade of blue. Can anyone share when this happens?”

(ooc: Pardon the momentary detour. I'm dealing with a personal tragedy and didn't have the spoons to finish writing up the activity but didn't want to leave all you lovely people hanging. Hope to have it up by Sunday.)

There were so many facts coming forth now. Char scribbled away as Gert confirmed or corrected responses. Granted, some aspects left him confused but these could easily be cleared up by a little reading from his textbooks later on. Or even seek clarity from the professor later on.

Maybe this Puff was overthinking about the blue moon topic but in his mind, he thought there was some great complicated explanation. Then again, it could be a simple explanation. Which was it? He was definitely unsure and in the end gave up on trying to untangle the mess in his mind to seek out an answer.

He’d just skip providing one for that question then.

This was confusing. She was right and she was wrong too? Maria was unsure as took up a prachment and busied herself with scribbling down all the different moon phases that Prof DeVries and her class mates mentioned. The third question had her stumped for an answer since Maria had never seen the moon another colour than it usually was. If she tried to think of it logically then maybe the moon changed colour when it was a special event like the lunar eclipse. Raising her hand Maria hazarded a guess "Um does it happen in august professor?" It was something that came to mind at least.

Desiree positively beamed upon hearing that she was actually correct about gibbous phases. Well, what do you know? Maybe she wasn’t completely terrible at this subject after all! Eager to keep her streak of correct answers going, she listened intently to the next question.

Hmm… blue moon. Desiree vaguely remembered reading that a blue moon was the third full moon in a season of four full moons, but that had nothing to do with color. Bit of a misleading name, honestly! That probably wasn’t correct, as Professor Gert had mentioned a blue appearance to the moon. What caused that? She sat quietly until a thought occurred to her. Raising her hand, she said, “Would dust particles or volcanic ash cause the moon to look blue?” She thought she recalled reading that!

Brandon's hand was very nice and he was very good at holding hands - he could be a professional hand holder! Anna didn't mind the awkward position in the least since it made her feel more ironically more comfortable and less anxiety about the missing-but-apparently-not-really-missing moon. Unfortunately, it did not not improve her understanding of the material since she had no idea what a satellite was and wondered if there was a difference between reflected and refracted...but none of that really seemed to matter once Professor Gert confirmed that the moon did in FACT turn blue AND it did so once every two to three years.

Which...still sounded like a cycle to her, especially since the moon phase things (lots of words she did not remember at all right now outside of full moon and new moon) was not really precise and had a window in which they would start and all that. Blue moons just...happened to have a bigger window!

Oh oh! She had an answer because Professor Gert had just said it! So her, free, hand shot up. "It happens every two to three years," she chirped with wide sparkly eyes. She was trying, we promise. Only the Ice Princess of Ravenclaw Tower was talking about volcanic ash...which didn't seem to match up with the two to three years thing she realized after the last syllable had left her lips. Not like them happening in August would. "Or...er...maybe...it's...um...blue...like how...the sky looks blue to us...or the ocean...light wavelengths...scattered more than the other colors..."

Remarkably she did know a little about THAT sort of thing because COLORS and lights. Which also meant that she DID know the difference between reflected and refracted and had simply forgotten in the moment.

She also really wasn't fussed by the professor getting her last name wrong. With sooooooooooooooooooooooo many students and herself only a third year without any real astronomical prowess, the Hufflepuffle was likely easy to muddy with other students and names - good thing Anna liked mud!

Professor Gert wondered briefly if she had thrown them for a loop since she had decided to expand upon the blue moon concept when it hadn’t originally been part of her lesson plan. But then she had just gone with the flow to further explain what had come up and they would definitely still have plenty of time for her planned activity. Most had remained quiet which was quite alright, though Ms. Dolph ventured a thought. “Nay,” she said with a polite shake of her head. “It is not something determined by time of year…though I suppose it had happened at some point during August.” She would have to look that up herself to be sure.

But for now Ms. Marchand had spoken up with a correct answer and she couldn’t help the smile. “Aye…dust particles in the air, either from volcanic eruptions or other sources, is what would make the moon appear blue when it does.” Celeste looked mildly confused when Ms Walles repeated back what she had previously said, though figured the young girl might be confused herself. “Nay, the non-color changing blue moon is the one that happens every two to three years. But ye are correct with the wavelengths….the light being refracted off the dust particles Ms Marchand had mentioned.”

--------------------------------------------------

But enough of her detour, back to the topic at hand. “Now for something creative…” she mused, slipping out her wand and removing the disillusionment charm that she had placed over eight stations placed around the exterior portions of the tower room. Take that for hidden in plain sight like the new moon while also not distracting students with their curiosity like the thought she originally had to just cover them with fabric. A thought she had corrected after remembering a situation during previous lessons.

SPOILER!!: Rough Station Look

“Each of these stations has a 3D model of the moon at one phase of its circuit hanging with it. The light within representing the sun,” she informed pointing them out. They would see it in earnest when they each took their turns. “They are in no particular order so that won’t necessarily help you in the activity.” Celeste hadn’t wanted to make it too easy for them by simply following the moon models from one point to the other. She wanted to see if they could pick up things by what she had mentioned so if they had listened they should be okay.

SPOILER!!: moon model

“What I would like you to do for the rest of the class period is to take a clean piece of parchment and go to each of the stations…it doesn’t matter which one you start as long as you go to all eight.” So, the easiest way for them to remember which ones they had done already was probably the way they should handle them. “You will draw each of the circles, coloring in the shadow how you see it at the station and see if you can identify what phase of the moon is being shown, writing it below your drawing. Don’t worry, they don’t have to be perfectly round or be an exact replica of the model or even all correct, I’m looking more for seeing if you understand what I’ve been teaching and give it a shot.”

(ooc: Hey all, thank you for your patience. I think Celeste’s instructions are pretty clear, though feel free to ask questions either to Professor Gert or VM me. Take your time and do it in as many posts as you would like and if you feel creative, add art as long as you follow size rules of posting images on SS.

Most of all have fun with it. I’ll keep this open for the next four days.)

Charlie set about making his notes, his mind a little clearer about the answer to the question that had been asked shortly before. Thankfully they were moving onto the activity because he was sure that he was beginning to have a headache. Or maybe he just wanted to sleep. Whatever the case was, he was ready to move away from questions.

The 3D models looked pretty neat to the Puff. At least the activity was simple enough, and maybe he would be able to use his textbook to assist him. Char got himself a clean sheet of parchment, labelled his name and House on it then processed to the first station. No, he wouldn’t be using his text book at this moment; it would be used to confirm his work afterwards.

The first station of his choice was approached. A circle {it was more like an oval, oops} was drawn then half of it was shaded in with the pencil. Below the oval, the words ‘third quarter’ were noted down. Easy peasy. Here’s to hoping that he wouldn’t get mixed up with the phases.

The biggest problem that Aurora had with Astronomy was that she would simply switch off half way through the lesson when it got entirely too scientific and complicated and there were discussions of spacey things she didn’t quite understand. Anna seemed to have somewhat of a grasp in what was going on despite clinging to Brandon’s hand in fear of the disappearing moon. She was only half listening to the whole conversation, instead doodling a picture of a smiley faced flower on her parchment paper rather than answering the question.

She only just came out of her daze when the sound of other students standing up brought her back to reality. She had barely taken in any of the instructions Professor Gert had given and quite frankly had no idea what on Earth she was supposed to do. She turned to her Bestie with a slightly alarmed expression. “Umm.. Anna. Can we work together?” she asked. Mostly because Aurora found she worked best with other people, especially one she considered her ‘soul sister’ and therefore loved being around but also because she hoped that Anna knew what she was doing. Professor Gert hasn’t specified that they could work in pairs but she also hasn’t explicitly mentioned that they couldn’t.

If Anna remembered to do her homework more often than not AND were she to arrive on time for lessons...more often than not...then maybe more of this would be sticking in her thoughts. Maybe. Probably? She was pretty confused still but knowing the moon could change colors was really exciting and special. Which, unfortunately, may be the only bit of information that she took from this evening's lesson: THE MOON CHANGED COLORS SOMETIMES. Maybe she should try throwing ash from the fireplace up into the sky and see if she could get it to look blue. Hmmmm.

When it came to activity time, her eyes brightened and she immediately was nodding her head when Star Soul Sister Aurora asked if they could work together. As to whether or not Anna actually knew what was going on...well...she could say with full confidence that she did not. BUT, she knew someone who diiiiiiiiiid and he was still holding her hand. "Of course! Brandon can help us too. He knows loads about this stuff. OH! Did you know that there are things hidden on the moon! Like...there is a rabbit...and a man! I think there is a dog too and maybe a woman and child. We should look for those too! I really want to see the rabbit on the moon."

At the next station, the shadow took up a quarter of the model moon on what would be his right side. Char busied himself by drawing a rather crooked circle and filled in the shading. But um… what name was given to this particular phase? Beneath it and after some thought, he wrote ‘waxing crescent’ {this was actually incorrect - the phase was Waning Gibbous}. Gosh, was his headache intensifying? It was. Must be due to all the thinking he was doing. He rubbed at his forehead as he drifted to the next model. Well, this one was easy: there was no shadow. That meant it was the Full Moon! Charlie very confidently drew and labelled this representation.

Next up, the shadow of this moon filled a quarter of it but on his left side. Oh! Then this must be the Waning Crescent! {It was not. It was the Waxing Gibbous}. This was also drawn and labelled with confidence. The fifth model reflected a moon covered equally in shade {on his left side} and light. Another oval was printed, shaded and labelled: Third quarter.

Whoa, two correct astronomy answers in a row! That was a new record for Desiree! Confidence boosted by her success, she listened intently to the instructions for the activity. So she was supposed to go to each of the eight stations and draw the moon model as it appeared. Sounded simple enough - and fun! She loved art projects!

Taking out a fresh piece of parchment, she decided to make her moons pink with purple shadows. Not super accurate, she knew, but it would look pretty! Colored pens in hand, she moved to the closest station to her seat and peered at the model. The whole thing was in shadow… must be the new moon. Well, that was easy! Desiree completely filled in her first circle with purple and moved on to the next station. What was this one? Gibbous, she knew. But waxing or waning? The shadow was only a small sliver on the left side. Must be waxing! She colored in a sliver of purple on the left side of her moon and moved on.

The next model she came to was halfway in shadow. Definitely a quarter! The shadow was on the right side this time, so that made it a… last quarter, right? Moving along, she saw that the next model was almost entirely in shadow. That made it a crescent, and the shadow was on the left so… waxing crescent, right? She colored her moon about three-quarters in purple on the left side.

With the first half of the moons done, Desiree could use the process of elimination to help her fill in the rest. The fifth station she came to was another quarter, this time with the shadow on the opposite side. If the other was a last quarter, this one had to be a first quarter. Station six was super easy! There was no shadow on this model at all. Must be a full moon! Moving on to station seven, Desiree spotted the other crescent moon. The previous one was waxing, so this one had to be waning. One more station and one more moon phase left, the waning gibbous.

Desiree peeked at the final model to confirm her suspicion, and sure enough, the moon had only a sliver of a shadow at the right side. Filling her final moon in, she returned to her seat and labeled each moon accordingly.

SPOILER!!: Desiree’s work

1. New moon
2. Waxing gibbous
3. Last quarter
4. Waxing crescent
5. First quarter
6. Full moon
7. Waning crescent
8. Waning gibbous

With five models down, there were obviously three left to complete. Char moved onto another one and immediately felt his head increase a smidge as he pondered on what this one might represent. To stall for a moment, he drew an okay-ish, round-ish thing. Clearly he was improving on his freehand circles. It was filled three quarters of the way with shading on the left side. “Uh…I think you’re the Waning Gibbous.” {It was really the Waxing Crescent.}

Must he be so bad at Astronomy? Was it too late to stop pursuing this at a NEWT level? Could he get Jude and his big brain to coach him on the subject before exams? So many questions, so little answers at present. The next model was easy: the New Moon. And by way of elimination, the last model where three quarters of it was shadowed to the right meant that the model represented the Waxing Gibbous {in reality, it was the Waning Crescent}.

But hey, no matter how much he got wrong, Char had given the activity his best shot.

Celeste paused at her desk and watched as the students split off to take care of her little project. Ms. Ackerly and Ms. Walles appeared to be working together, perhaps with Mr. Fox since he seemed…attached to the Hufflepuff. The professor fought the urge to raise her eyebrow at the gesture but she wasn’t going to cause trouble as long as it didn’t cause trouble. Then there was Mr. Bergstrand who jumped into the activity with full aplomb, but his best effort into it, even if she wasn’t sure he’d made the right guess on the last one as he spoke up.

But then she hadn’t memorized what each station had been holding which model so she wasn’t entirely sure what was what from the front of the room.

And then there was Ms. Marchand and her work. It seemed her positive reinforcement of the girl’s correct answers might have worked for the better as the fifth year was also quite enthused with her progress through the stations. “Quite creative drawing ,” Celeste mused with a smile as she noted the colorful combination on the parchment while straightening up from her perch. A glance at her watch made the professor realize it was about that time.

“Alright with that you should all be wrapping up your work,” she remarked to the entire class, strolling casually around the classroom to take a look at their work. “Decent work everyone…be sure to keep your drawings safe as they’ll be sure to help you with your homework.” In some way…whether showing you the right or wrong way, but they could surely use their textbooks to verify what was actually what.

ooc: Awesome everyone. Obviously no real homework to give out. I'll be leaving this open for about 24 more hours for catching up and wrapping up.)

Hope had gotten sidetracked by her attempts to make all her moon-circles exactly round. So she had to rush a bit, getting the shapes for each of the phases drawn on each. "Full, new," she muttered to herself, doing the easiest ones first--a white circle and a black one. Then two not quite round (that she could manage), one with a dark sliver to the right and one to the left, for waning gibbous and waxing gibbous, respectively. Then two cut exactly in half, the first quarter with the dark part on the left side and the third quarter with the dark part on the right. There, that was six, that left the two crescents, two white bow-like shapes with waxing open to the left and waning to the right.

Hope sat and looked at her work. It seemed correct, as far as it went, but it still bothered her that her shapes weren't perfectly round. Then she had an idea and picked up her pencil and made some changes to each one. She had drawn faces on her moons, like the pictures of the Man in the Moon she'd seen in old story books. The faces seemed to distract from the not-quite-perfectness of her drawing, and besides, they made her smile. She hoped this was all right with the professor--well, she hadn't said anything about not drawing faces, had she?

Finally satisfied, Hope gathered up her things and took her work up to the professor to turn in. "Thanks for class, Professor," she said, stifling a yawn. Merlin, it was late, and she was tired. Good thing she didn't have to walk far to get to Ravenclaw Tower from here. "Good night."
