Every 1st September, new first years arrive at Hogwarts via boat, travelling from the outskirts of Hogsmeade, across the lake, and into the boathouse. This structure stands, logically enough, at the edge of the lake, and can be reached via a pathway from the courtyard, consisting of a long and winding stairway down the cliff face. A hidden passageway accessible from the inside of the boathouse leads up through the cliff itself, and emerges onto a patch of lawn which lies in the shadow of the castle.
All of the Hogwarts boats are stored here when not in use. You are free to take them out onto the lake, as long as you have permission from the groundskeeper to do so. Everything you might need for a trip out in the boats is hanging up around the walls, including oars and life jackets. Be sure to put everything back where you found it once you're done with it. Including - and especially - the boats themselves.

With the first week of lessons behind her, Claudine was looking for a way to recharge her batteries. She hadn't realised just how many friends she had made over the past few years and socialising had always been draining for her. Her bag was slung over her right shoulder but it contained her sketching materials as opposed to her textbooks. There was also a rat poking out of her jeans pocket. The seventh year had her left hand shaded over her eyes against the early morning sun.
"Do you see him, Samm?" she asked the rat. "Do you think he's sleeping in? I don't want to wake him if he is..." Samm made some seemingly uncaring chattering noises. Claudine regretted not asking Kazmi sooner in the week about using a boat. She'd hoped that he'd be up and about early given the fact that he was now Groundskeeper.
She'd give it a few minutes here before she went looking for him.
Kamran was indeed doing his usual morning rounds, checking in on each area of the founds and making sure all was in order for the day ahead - and ensuring there were no signs that students (or anyone else, for that matter) had been out here undetected through the night. He didn't put it past anyone to sneak down here for a night-time boat race or an oh-so-romantic glide across the lake.

“Found him,” Claudine informed Samm, as though the rat couldn’t see that. “Hi, professor. Good morning.” Yes, she was in a good mood despite the challenges of that week, the main one being the very first DADA lesson. There’s nothing better than having a lesson on acromantulas - her boggart. “I usually am up early. I seem to focus best on my sketching then.” Claudine figured that Kazmi would be extra busy given his extra responsibilities but it would be rude of her not to ask how he was finding said responsibilities. “Not burning yourself out with the additional work, are you, Professor?”
And if Kazmi was busy, that meant he didn’t have time for her waylaying him. “I was wondering if I could possibly borrow one of your boats…?” It had been a long while since she’d been out in one.

She leaned back against the wall, deciding to take a short break to breathe and make sure she wasn't feeling upset or tense.

"Not so far. I'm one of those who likes having a lot to do." Which, by the way, made teaching an ideal job. Especially teaching at Hogwarts. Ah, but the boats? Always refreshing when the kids were respectful about these things, but he always knew of Blaze to be just such a student. "Of course. I can help you get one ready to take out, if you'd like." Even if not, perhaps they could catch up while Blaze set up and Kamran checked on everything else. "Are you planning to sketch out on the water?"

Everyone talked to themselves in their heads anyway, it was okay if she gave herself a pep talk out loud so she could remember it better. "It's not stupid, I'm just being insecure. I'm allowed to be vulnerable. I am saying this because I am afraid. I'm afraid because I think that nobody cares about me. That is not true. There is evidence that this is not true. I have friends who care about me and want me to be happy." Okay. She looked up again.
"No... I'm actually trying to remember things better right now, cause like. Patronus stuff... I find this memory easier to hold onto when I see it outside of my head. I guess. I really need to focus on it." She looked at Quinn uncomprehendingly. What were they asking for? She looked at their hand. Then the drawing. Then their hand again. Oh."Here. It's me, and that's my surfboard, and that's his hand, see?" She handed it over and looked at them hopefully. Did they like it? Was it good? Were they going to, at the very least, NOT start the next sentence telling her to forgive Emmerson? Ash would really appreciate it. Please.

Claudine did not doubt it: she had figured that Kazmi would have liked the extra outdoorsy activities since he was the Flying professor. Not that you had to like the outdoors a lot in order to be a Flying professor. Um… were her thoughts making sense? Probably not. But this was not the time for that. “I’m glad to hear it. Not that I don’t have faith in you, professor, but it did cross my mind that you might get too busy with the grounds to plan the usual fun lessons.’’ Claudine squinted at Kazmi as though trying to decide if this might be true.
The seventh year’s face lit up. “That would be great, thank you.’’ She’d be lying if she said she was confident about getting a boat out on her own. “Indeed I am. Samm’s also very excited to take in the views.” Claudine indicated to the rat whose upper body was sticking out of a front pocket. “Say hi to Professor Kazmi, Samm.” Her pet turned beady little eyes up to the man and twitched its nose as though sniffing Kazmi.

Quinn took a moment to process what Ash had said. It seemed like she was really talking more to herself than to Quinn, and they didn't want to make things awkward by talking about it. So they simply said: "I care about you and want you to be happy. And being vulnerable... that's something I'm working on, too. But I know that it's necessary even if it's scary. So... I'm proud of you for being vulnerable." They gave her a little smile. "And I've realized that being vulnerable can make you closer to your friends! Who knew that being open and honest could let people get to know you better?" they joked with a grin in an attempt to lighten the mood a bit.
Quinn nodded in understanding. They were excited for when they would be able to conjure up their own Patronus.... it sent their mind wandering a bit for what their happiest memories were. Baking with Gram for sure... they wanted to say gardening with Mum, but... that one was a bit sad now.... maybe.... the day they met Atlas...

Ash looked up, startled to know that Quinn had heard her talking to herself out loud... although in hindsight, she was talking OUT LOUD and it made perfect sense that they’d heard her. She relaxed her tense posture and gave them a small smile too. Proud of her? That made her heart happy. Very few people(excluding her bodyguards and her boyfriend) said they were proud of her... other than Father. He said it to her sometimes as an afterthought, and she was never quite sure why. He clearly thought it was important for her to know that, but if he was REALLY proud of her, then how come he shut himself in his room and didn’t talk to her? That didn’t even make sense. But Quinn... they said they were proud and she didn’t hesitate to believe it. She would totally hug them right now, only she didn’t know if they liked hugs. She laughed. “You’d think that because I’m an oversharer, I’d constantly talk about my feelings.” Actually, it made perfect sense for her to cover her emotions with useless nonsensical information, but they were both laughing right now and Ash didn’t wanna ruin the moment by mentioning it. It could be dealt with later. For now, she just wanted to hang out with her friend Quinn.
She slid down the wall until she was sitting down again. ”That’s my best friend and boyfriend. But he used to just be my best friend. And in this memory, he’s only a stranger. Some random person.” And she saved him anyway. You know, that was the first time she showed signs of magic, so it often felt like she was trading his life for hers or something. Despite the fact that they were both very much alive. But... it was worth it. Even if they weren’t dating. Even if they weren’t friends. Theodore was a good person. She couldn’t just let him DIE or something. That would be wrong. “I know it doesn’t sound like a happy memory, but it’s the strongest positive memory I have. Better than sitting alone in my mansion by FAR. And patronuses are all about your will to live and things like that... I don’t know. All the pieces fit together fine in my head.” It just... felt right. And every time she really thought about it, it caused the feelings that made her feel like she could cast a patronus. That meant she was on the right track, yes?

But it’s not the same as an emergency, y’know?” ‘Being friends’ or ‘dating’ was easy when nobody was dying. Being a stranger was twice as easy. But in emergencies, you found out how much you REALLY cared. As it all turned out, Ash cared a great deal.
She shrugged and looked away, unsure of what to say. “I- I have Dustin and Alex.” They were practically family. “I have brothers too.” Brandon was always following her around, and although she hardly saw Charlie, she was pretty sure he liked her. “My real mother has been dead since forever. So it’s not like I can be close with her.” She knew Quinn was probably asking about Megan Olivia and Father... but they didn’t specify which family members they wanted to know about, and you always had to ask very specific questions if you wanted Ash to answer. Cause she didn’t lie. She just tried to find every single loophole in every single personal question.

Kamran opened his mouth to say that he didn't think there was such a thing as too busy, but fortunately thought better of it before a single syllable could escape. He knew it wasn't actually true, was just one of those things he said, but he also knew better to say it to the students, who might decide to agree and promptly take on too much. Blaze was a seventh year; she had enough to do.
