Default Muggle Studies Lesson 2: Let Them Decorate Cake

The door to the classroom is open, allowing you to enter. Even with the warm spring sunlight streaming in through the windows, the room is a comfortable temperature. The desks are lined in their usual neat rows, and Professor Applewood has done her best to keep the intrusive vines confined to the walls.

Speaking of the professor, she can be found standing beside her desk, ready to greet you as you enter.

Come on in and have a seat. Class will begin shortly.

OOC: Hi! Welcome to Muggle Studies Lesson 2! Class will begin in approximately 24 hours.

The cake part tasted good but... The frosting. Remembering that gave him an idea, so he raised his hand and waited to be called on. "A lot of bakers use fondant for frosting on a cake because it's sturdier than like a buttercream and can be used for molding. I personally don't think it tastes very good though." So no, he did not like fondant though it seemed the most popular.
"Excellent, yes, fondant is very commonly used. Very useful and versatile in adding certain decorations or sculptures, even if the taste is not always up to par with the rest of the cake." It wasn't her favorite either, truth be told, though it was very nice to look at when done well.

And some of them were decorated so prettily that often Claudien found herself reluctant to even eat them.

Not really having an answer for this question, the seventh year opted to sit out on answering. She’d just be listening this time around.
No answer from Miss Blaze this time, it seemed, which was okay. She looked to still be paying attention, so Rosalie offered a smile before moving on to the next student.

"Our chef makes cakes from time to time" when they had a birthday party or any party really. "I never cared about the techniques or designs though, I just want to eat them" which is as far as his cake decorating skills went. "But he uses this weird tube (cake icing nozzles) to make flower shapes" at least he guessed they were supposed to look like flowers?
Rosalie could appreciate the honesty in Mister Yoon's answer. Eating cake was certainly the part that would excite people the most. "Flowers are a very common decoration that people use on their cakes, yes, excellent."

He grinned over that one Hufflepuff boy, Daniel's answer, cause honestly he had the correct answer and the only answer that mattered to the third year. "I'm with him. If the cake doesn't taste good, then what difference does the design make." Also, it was going to be destroyed via cutting within minutes, so it seemed like an awful lot of wasted energy on designs and techniques?

Still, Kins was doing a pretty decent job at NOT answering things. Or asking things, for that matter. But when Apollo offered his answer, Kins frowned. It made all the difference! People always judged books by their covers. Or people by the way they dressed. Or cakes by their designs. Or or or. She understood the point Apollo was trying to make, but it was silly.

"No one wants to eat an ugly cake."

..... Did she say that out loud?

Mister Adara-Stark raised a question about taste vs. decoration, and Miss James jumped in with a reply just as quickly. "Taste is certainly an important to consider when baking a cake, Mister Adara-Stark. And Miss James makes an excellent point. There's a reason for the saying that goes, 'you eat with your eyes first.' If something looks unappealing or unappetizing, people are much less likely to eat it, even if they're told that it tastes wonderful."

"I like any cake that has a lot of frosting on top." Val liked any and all kinds of cake, honestly. Who didn't? She did like ice cream a little more but yeah.
Rosalie smiled. "Certainly can't go wrong with including frosting on a cake." There was such a variety of frosting types too, so there was something for everyone.

She didn't really remember noticing any cake that much, except for how it tasted when she ate it. Then she remembered a cake she'd seen several years ago in the window of a New York deli. "I saw this cake once. It was rather a tall cake, with chocolate frosting, rather plain on the outside, but the really unique part was the inside. The cake had had a piece cut out of it and laid to one side on a small plate, so that the onlookers could clearly see the cake's inside. It had been made of many, many thin layers--16 of them.' (Violet had stood there and counted them). "The layers were chocolate and white, alternated one after the other and with custard or red filling in between each one. It looked splendid!"
"Yes, excellent! Sometimes bakers not only decorate the outside, but even the inside can be done creatively with differing flavors, sizes, and colors for the cake layers." Those were very impressive too.

"You have all covered a nice variety of ways that cakes can be styled differently. Cake decorating can take many forms, all depending on the creativity and skill level of the baker.

"And so today, we're going to be trying some hands-on practice with the art of cake decorating. We'll be moving down to the kitchens for this, so please follow me."
And once everyone was lining up, Rosalie led the way down to the kitchens, keeping an eye out for any vine obstacles along the way.

Fortunately, they didn't have far to go with the kitchen being a couple floors down, and the vines didn't take this opportunity to stand in their way, and so after tickling the pear, they were inside. She led them over to a part of the kitchens that had been sectioned off with tables lined up in rows, one for each student. On the table they would find a cake turntable, an offset spatula, a round cake board, a flat plate with two small layers of cake on it, and a few containers of frosting.

"Please take your spot at one of the tables, one student per table." And she did the same, taking the table set up in the front of the rows. "The elves have kindly let us use this area of the kitchens and assisted in preparing a few things ahead of time. I want you all to get a basic, general overview of cake decorating for this lesson; over the next few weeks, we'll cover certain aspects in more detail. The cake layers have already been baked and cooled, and the tops have been cut to provide a flat surface on top.

"I will demonstrate the first part of your tasks, but there is also a paper at your tables with these instructions listed out if you want to follow along."
It was up them whether they wanted to watch a little first or if they wanted to complete each step as she did.

"First order of business when handling any kind of food, of course, is to wash our hands and make sure our hair is out of our face and tied back if necessary." Hers was indeed already pulled back, so she moved on to washing her hands at one of the nearby sinks for 20 seconds, then returning to her station once dried.

"Next," she continued, completing the steps as she went along, "we'll place this cake board on the turntable and the first cake layer on top of it. Then, using the offset spatula, we'll add some frosting to the top of this layer, spreading it evenly, and then we'll place the second layer on top of that. Then we can apply more frosting to the top of that and around the sides of the two layers. You can turn the cake with the turntable as you do this to make it easier to spread around the sides. It's okay if this layer is a bit thin and doesn't fully hide the cake. It's called a crumb coat, and it'll help keep the crumbs from mixing with the final coat of frosting you'll add in a few minutes.

"In order for the frosting to harden, you'll need to put it in the enchanted ice box for about 10 minutes. With an ordinary Muggle refrigerator, this time can be longer, but as we don't have access to one here, we'll use what we have."
Ice boxes had been used by Muggles once upon a time too, before refrigerators were common, so the function was still the same, even if this particular one worked through magic.

"While you wait, you may wish to plan out how you want to decorate your cake. On the counter over here are several piping bags ready to go in a variety of colors and with a few different nozzle shapes. Perhaps you'll want to add a border to your cake, or write a message, or draw a flower, or anything else you can think of."

And with her cake in the ice box, she would go ahead and talk about the last two steps without demonstrating. "And so the final two steps are simple: once the crumb coat has hardened, take it out and add the top layer of frosting, smoothing it out over the top and around the sides. And then you may begin decorating."

And with that... "If you haven't already, you may begin!"

OOC: Hopefully everything is clear, but here's a simpler list of the instructions as well:
  • Wash hands; ensure hair is out of your face and/or tied back
  • Place cake board on the turntable
  • Place first cake layer on top of the cake board
  • Apply frosting to the top of the cake layer with offset spatula
  • Place second layer on top of the frosting
  • Apply a crumb coat around the sides and the top of the cake
  • Refrigerate in enchanted ice box for 10 minutes
  • Apply a top layer of icing, smoothing it around evenly
  • Decorate with piping, sprinkles, etc.

If you have any questions, please feel free to VM/PM me Class will continue in approximately 48 hours.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine joined the line to follow Applewood down to the kitchen. This was going to be fun. Maybe. Either way, she found herself anticipating the activity to come. Once they were there at the kitchen, Claudine took some time to observe the set up and the equipment. Yes, definitely cake stuff. She silently made her way to one of the tables as instructed, taking a spot at one of the rows at the back.

Her eyes were fixed on the prepared cake before her. Claudine was thinking to herself that since she was such a good artist, decorating shouldn’t be too difficult for her. And yes, she was definitely going to be watching Applewood’s demonstration before getting started.

First, Claudine tied her hair in a messy bun before washing her hand, making sure to get under her nails as well. With the cake board on the turntable and the first cake on it, Claudine began applying frosting with the offset spatula. She dalloped a healthy amount of it onto the cake then began spreading the goop around. This wasn’t so bad and she immediately felt a bit more comfortable. She turned the turntable this way and that to help things even out. The girl even found that leaving her spatula still and allowing the turntable to spin helped with that. That done, the second layer of cake was placed onto the frosted one. More goops of frosting came, plus more turning and evening out. By this time, the Snakette was having the time of her life. Her crumb coat was thin, but it was perfect.

Into the icebox it went.

Oh dear. Another assignment involving artistic ability. Violet began the first few steps, which she felt she could handle, and trying not to worry about the decorating. She washed her hands expertly, just as she did before preparing potions, and twisted her hair back into a bun and held it with a nifty little spell which her friend (no longer governess, for Violet was quite grown-up) Jane Howard had taught her a few years ago. That was all easy enough, but doing it calmed Violet's nerves.

Next she placed the cake board on the turntable and carefully placed one of the cake layers on the board. Taking about 3 dollops of frosting with the offset spatula, she dropped it into the center of the layer and began gently spreading it from the center to the edge. Even more carefully lifting the second layer with both hands, she gently set it on top of the first, and repeated the frosting-spreading on the top, then moved to the sides. She found it a bit tricky at first to deal with all the crumbs that stuck to the frosting, but she soon got the hand of it, and using the turntable, eventually coated all the top and sides with frosting. This wasn't so bad--it was like brewing a potion, only with less disgusting ingredients.

Violet popped her cake into the magical refrigerator and prepared to wait the required ten minutes. As she surveyed the decorating items laid out on the front table, she began to to get nervous again. Art had never been her strong point and she was beginning to worry that her cake would wind up looking like a troll had made it.

OOC: This is a great lesson! Maybe MadAlice will finally learn to frost a cake properly, too.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash was less than enthusiastic about cake decorating, and that dampened her earlier excitement about getting to be creative. But that excitement returned when she realized they didn’t have to MAKE the actual CAKE. Because decorating was the only part of baking that she was good at.

She wrestled her long hair into a ponytail and washed her hands, which was very very easy. She put the cakeboard on the turntable, which would have been easier if she didn’t absolutely need to center the cakeboard in the middle.

Putting the cake on the cakeboard was probably the hardest part, because it involved actual food. Luckily Ash had a steady hand, and it wasn’t too difficult if she went slowly.

Now came the fun part! Ash carefully frosted the cake, making sure it was absolutely perfect. Sure the frosting wouldn’t be seen in the final cake, and it was just plain frosting, but that was no reason to not do a good job. A perfect job. Okay, nobody was perfect, so maybe an almost perfect job.

Ugh, she had to move the actual cake again. She went extra EXTRA carefully this time, because if she had to adjust the cake, it would mess up the frosting underneath and then it wouldn’t be perfect and she’d have to redo it which probably involved starting from scratch and looking incompetent in front of the whole class.

She applied the crumb coat, trying to be as even as possible. Was there a way to make crumbs look artistic? Ash was trying. Decorating food was harder than regular art, in her opinion. She respected the cooks in her household a lot. And Alex too, even though he wasn’t technically a cook.

Ash thought that if the kitchens didn’t have a refrigerator, they ought to get one. Really? An icebox??? Was this a renaissance fair? Victorian England? The 1900s? Ash was dying to know if all wizards used iceboxes. Seriously. She needed to know! She put the cake in the icebox, suppressing a smirk.

Waiting was soooo boring. Ash entertained herself by scribbling notes on the back of her hand and stressing about waiting for exactly ten minutes. She figured that this was potions, where you had a window of several seconds to do things OR ELSE. She was probably wrong.

When the waiting(for ten minutes and one second) was done, Ash removed the cake and added the icing. She decided to make a very simple cake, because it would look tasteful and also because she was not awesome at this. She frosted it in white, made a couple of designs in the frosting, then added a border around the top with whatever was in the piping bags.

...

“Professor, do you have any strawberries I could put in the middle of my cake?” Ash thought it would look very pretty.

He really wasn't sure if he'd be telling his cousin he'd learned how to do this or not. Maybe he would, because if this was fun it might be an easy way to spend time with the.... louder of his cousins, or maybe he'd just stick to following Chase around. Probably that.

Once instructions had been given and he was comfortably settled at a table towards the back, Evan located the sink. He paused before starting the washing, eying his hair which.. was getting pretty shaggy these days and easily fell into his eyes. He'd probably look ridiculous, but he reached into his pocket for a hair tie he kept in there and gathered some of the hair at the front of his head and put it in a small pony tail. It still flopped onto his forehead, but at least the small tail made it so it was out of his face. With that finished, he went ahead and washed his hands.

Back to his station, he picked up his cake board and put it on the turntable, before then also grabbing his first layer and setting that down as well. Grabbing his offset spatula, he eyed it for a moment before also glancing at the frosting. Professor Applewood had made it look so easy and yet... He attempted to scoop some with the spatula which... was not very successful. So then he picked up the bowl to use the spatula to scrape some out which worked too well. He put the bowl back down and attempted to smooth out the giant glob, turning the table in order to make it easier on himself.

Once the large frosting layer was smooth-ish, he placed down the next cake layer. Now for the crumb coat. More frosting on this one didn't seem like such a bad idea, so he went for the second technique and again scraped out frosting onto the cake, getting a much more manageable amount this time around. With that done, he set it down again and went to smoothing out the frosting to the best of his abilities. It was... rough looking. But... smooth-ish again. After having tried to get it entirely smooth a few more times, he decided it would have to be good enough and it was time for the icebox.

He carried it over, carefully setting it down in the icebox, careful to not mess with any of the others on accident, and reached into his pocket for his timer that he'd grabbed before leaving class. Lucky he hadn't removed it after potions.

Now to wait 10 minutes.

With her pattern in mind, the Snakette removed the cake from the icebox. Indeed it had hardened and seemed perfect for decorating. She dolloped on more goops of frosting then began evening it out with the spatula. Used to this by now, the seventh year got through this round faster. Soon the cake was looking quite proper and ready to be designed.

Using the appropriate colours, Claudine decorated the top of the cake first. On it was a huge Slytherin emblem. As for the cake itself {around it}, green wavy lines brightened up the white. At intervals along each line, she stuck those edible silver ball thingies. Dragées, she thought they were called.

Once done, Claudine stood back to admire her work.

Not bad for a first timer, she determined.

While waiting for her own crumb coat to harden, Rosalie moved around the area to check on everyone's progress. Things appear to be going smoothly, and she noted Miss Blaze, Miss Blackthorne, Miss Fox, and Mister Nam were working through the steps very well. And then there was a question about strawberries.

"Ah, yes, here they are." She picked up a container of strawberries from a nearby counter and set it carefully on the fourth year's table. "Nice work, Miss Fox." There was a nice, simple elegance to her design, and the strawberries would be a nice touch.

Noting that Miss Blaze had also completed the design of her cake, Rosalie paused by her station as well. "Wonderful job, Miss Blaze." Showing one's house pride was always fun to see, and her hard work on the cake was something to be proud of too.

And with a glance at her watch, it was time for Rosalie to remove her cake from the ice box. And perhaps...yes, perhaps it would be good to introduce the final activity of the lesson. The students were progressing well with the instructions, and she wanted them to have plenty of time to work on the next section too.

So once she had moved her cake back to her table, she continued, "Excellent work so far, everyone! Once you've finished up with your cakes, you can move on to our final activity for today. I want to go ahead and introduce it to you, so you'll have as much time as possible to work on it before the end of the lesson."

Kneeling down, she pulled out from under her table a large photograph and foldable poster stand. She set the stand out, propping the photo on it so that everyone could see it.

"This is just one example of the many kinds of cakes people can create. And I want each of you to try your hand at recreating just one of the tiers on this cake, whether it's the bottom tier, top tier, or any of the three in-between. I don't expect a perfect replica, especially with the amount of time we have left here. I just want you to get a feel for what goes in to designing even just a small portion of these cakes, and hopefully you have a little bit of fun with it too."

She gestured to another one of the ice boxes. "In there you'll find two cake layers similar to the ones you've just completed, with the crumb coat already covering them. You'll need to add the top layer of frosting yourself, and you'll find them on the counter over here," she gestured to it, "in all the colors you'll need in their containers and in piping bags, as well as rolled fondant icing you can use as well."

And that about covered it, yes? There weren't as many specific steps to this, since it utilized some from the first activity, and part of it was just in seeing their creativity and work in tackling the recreation.

"If you have any questions, or if you need any help, I'll be around to assist. Otherwise, you may begin!"

OOC: Posting a little early so there's a little more time for both activities. Please feel free to continue with/catch-up on the previous activity if you want to complete that before moving on, or jump into the final activity if you prefer! Class will begin wrapping up in approximately 50 hours.

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina was excited as she headed down to the kitchens along with her classmates - feeling a little impatient too. So, were they going to be able to eat cake?? She pulled her hair back in a ponytail as she entered - didn't want it getting in the way of cake decorating - before washing her hands, listening to the instructions. She placed the cake board on the turntable first before setting down the cake layer carefully. OOOH. She applied the frosting to the top of the cake with the offset spatula - it looked so yummy and she wanted to try it but later, maybe. She added the second layer of cake on top of the frosting.. so far so good. It didn't look very neat somehow.. um.. but she was going to keep going. Now for the crumb coat. She applied it slowly around the sides and on top of the cake.. and it looked better ish. Maybe. She picked it up and set it inside the ice box.. now to wait for ten minutes.

Once the time was up, she removed the cake from the ice box and walked back to her table, making sure she didn't drop it. Setting it on the turntable once again, she added a lot more frosting this time around using her spatula, trying to spread it as evenly as possible. Now, to decorate. Ummm. She wasn't good at this stuff.

Claudine beamed. “Thank you, professor.” This lesson was turning out to be such a fun one. She hoped they’d get to take at least a huge chunk of the cake they designed for themselves after the lesson was done. She took some time to observe her classmates, admiring all the creativity happening. Creativity was one thing Claudine could appreciate even if she didn’t appreciate the ones bringing forth said creativity.

The photo Applewood propped up took the Snakette’s breath away. It was quite a beautiful cake. Already she knew she wanted to try a hand at the middle tier - the one with all of the flowers. And so it was time to get to work once more. As Applewood instructed, Claudine got herself a crumb coated layered cake.

Claudine dolloped frosting onto the new cake and began to spread it around evenly. Was it natural that she felt that she was a pro at this sort of thing already? Because she certainly felt like it.

Violet's cake had hardened in the refrigerator right on schedule and she had successfully added the second layer of frosting. But now for the hard part. She went up to look at all the decorations, trying to decide what she could do that wouldn't muck it up too much.

She wound up taking a decorating bag filled with green frosting and making a snake (or what was meant to be one) curling around the top edge of the cake, ending with its tail under its head. Well, the head looked more like a blob, so she took a couple of raisins and stuck them on for eyes to make it clearer. There. It was not that good, but it was something that looked somewhat like a snake.

Now she felt there should be something in the center, but couldn't think of what to put that she could do at least a passable job on. She wound up using black frosting to trace the outline of a Bain Marie pot, which looked kind of like an archaic double-boiler with feet, and added some steam coming out of the top. It was cartoonish, but at least she didn't smudge it.

Feeling fairly satisfied with her work, which wasn't brilliant but represented her best effort, she sat back and listened as the teacher went on to the next assignment. Violet's spirits fell when she looked at the sample cake they were supposed to replicate (or at least one layer, which was bad enough). It was so intricate--Violet felt she could never do it.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Soon enough, the top layer of frosting was added perfectly. Or rather, as perfect as Claudine could get it to be. Adding the flowery design was what Claudine was both nervous and excited about. The colours she wanted to use - two different ones than the ones that were actually in the photo, which she hoped Applewood would not mind. One was a dull purple and the other a rosy pink.

The Snakette got to work. She realised it was more difficult than she anticipated to accomplish the task using the piping bags since the flowers had to be drawn on the sides. Purple roses were added first. The first rose took a while because Claudine wanted to get it neatly down. But once it was done, she skipped a bit of space then added the next purple rose. As she progressed, Claudine got the hang of the task until she was able to add each rose in a shorter time.

With there no more space left for purple, pink roses were added to fill the spaces. Overall, the results weren’t bad for someone who had their first dabble with cake decorating. And no… Claudine didn’t want to have a bite out of this one; it was too pretty.

Walking about the area once more, Rosalie saw that Miss Nichols looked to be hard at work, progressing well through the steps.

And Miss Blackthorne had moved on to decorating her cake. She paused by the Slytherin's station once it appeared she was finished. "Well done, Miss Blackthorne." A little bit of house pride with the snake, and the creative pot/cauldron in the center was a nice touch.

And Miss Blaze soon had finished her recreation of one of the tiers. "Excellent work, Miss Blaze." The colors of the flowers were different than the photo, but it was still clear which tier she had attempted, and the finished product was still quite impressive.

And soon, with another glance at her watch, it appeared the time for the lesson was up. Rosalie turned to speak to the whole class. "That'll be all for us today, everyone. Great work, all of you! I love seeing your creativity.

"You may leave your cakes here; the elves will include them for dessert tonight, so you all will be able to share and taste your creations.

"Homework will be posted on the bulletin board later this afternoon. Class is dismissed."

OOC: The lesson thread will remain open for another 24 hours so you may still continue and wrap up with either of the activities if you want or you may post your character leaving. Thanks for coming, everyone!

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina staaared at the photo. UM. That cake looked so beautiful but she felt pretty sure that she couldn't recreate any of those tiers. It seemed too difficult. Hmmm, wait. Maybe she could try the second tier.. it would be a lot more easy to recreate.. compared to the other ones at least. She headed to the ice box nearby and picked up a crumb coated cake before heading back to her desk, placing it on the turntable.

She got to working on the next step, which was to apply frosting. She spread it as evenly as possible on the top and sides with a spatula.. and it looked good, not as messy this time around. She looked at the photo again.. a straight line, a wavy line and little dots. Uh. Easy enough. Taking a deep breath, she started to draw the blue and yellow lines as slowly and carefully as possible before adding the dots in red frosting. She repeated this until she'd gotten all the sides before stepping back to look at her cake... it could be a LOT better but it also could be a LOT worse. Honestly, it wasn't as bad as she thought it would be. Phew.

... Oh, wait. Lesson was over. Already?? She washed her hands before giving the professor a bright smile. "Thanks for the cool lesson, Professor! See you next time."

Er .... yea... but sometimes just because a cake looked aesthetically pleasing didn't mean it tasted good, which was pretty much all Apollo had been trying to get at with his answer. To the fourteen year old wizard, he wanted things that tasted good. Of course they would be baking a cake, a lesson that he knew his cousin would have loved but also made him really miss her baked goods. Maybe he should owl her and she can like send him some cookies or something.

Right. Time to bake the cake. Wash his hands, frost the cake... which was probably the worst frosting job ever ... definitely not picturesque unless you wanted a picture of worst frosting job... it was messy like his hair after waking up. And carefully he added another layer ... slightly off kilter from the first ... okay, yea he definitely wasn't going to try add more than two layers. Wasn't there a spell that could make this process go a lot smoother??

Oh wait. Muggle studies. Doh. Sighing, he sprinkled some red sugar on top cause red = gryffindor = the most superior of all the houses. Into the ice box his cake went .... and oh. Time to go?

"Thanks Professor!!!" He exclaimed, unbothered by the cake frosting that somehow seemed to be all over his hands. And out the door, probably leaving frosting on the door handle as he left.

Class certainly had seemed to fly by. And what today's lesson had most taught him... Cake decorator was not in his future. The first layer which they had been allowed creative freedom on looked... rough. He'd attempted Ravenclaw colors, and tried doing that fancy thing where frosting was melted and then poured over the top of a cake to make it have a marbled effect. But... he was thinking he used the wrong type of frosting or something, because instead of nice layers of blue and bronze... it had just combined to a murky, dark brown making it look truly entirely inedible.

And the recreating one of the layers she'd presented really did not go any differently. He'd thought the top layer looked easy enough (just black and white right?) but knowing how he already felt about fondant, he'd tried just covered the crumb layer with another layer of a white buttercream. And the black lines as well? Truly an unforgiving color. The longer he had the layer out to work on (which was awhile considering he kept scraping off the black since it looked so horrible), the meltier the white got and by the time class was mercifully dismissed, the black and white frosting had all mixed together now creating a weird gray effect. Which... sort of looked like the marbling he'd been hoping to go for earlier, except that was not what he was going for.

When Professor Applewood announced the cakes would be eaten at dinner, he physically grimaced as he looked back at both and briefly considering knocking them onto the ground er... 'accidentally'. Well... at least they were fondant free and should test decently. If anyone tried them.

Gathering his belongings, he headed towards the front with his peers, pausing to give a nod at his Professor and a polite, "Thank you, Professor Applewood. See you next class." And slipping out the door with the others.
