Default MadMadamMalfoy's Beautiful Broadway Bracelets

Welcome, friends! For those who don’t know me, I’m Rhi, and this is my third year participating in Seektober. I was on the fence about participating this year because I have less time and resources than in years past. I’m not good at drawing or graphics, and my usual art form, doll customization, takes a lot of time and money to do. It took me some time to come up with something I could do with the materials I have on hand, which is why I’m starting so late in the game, but I’m up for the challenge (I hope!).

I’ll be attempting the Apparecium Challenge with a series of handmade friendship bracelets, and I’ll be incorporating my love of musical theater by tying each prompt to a song from a musical. To further challenge myself, I’m going by the following rules:

- All songs must have been written for a musical. This means that shows using pre-existing music, like Mama Mia or Moulin Rouge, won’t appear on the list. Neither will many songs from Disney musicals which first appeared in movies.

- Multiple songs from the same musical will be limited. There will be a couple of repeats on the list, but for the most part, I’ve tried to avoid using multiple songs from the same show.

Without further ado, on with the show!

Thank you so much! I hope it live up to the hype!

Challenges 1 - 4: The Legacy Collection

This set is inspired by history, both magical and muggle. All songs used for these prompts come from musicals based on historical figures. I’d originally planned to do a set of bracelets inspired by Harry Potter characters whose personalities matched the historical figures referenced in the songs, but while I was compiling my prompt list and corresponding songs, I heard about Robbie Coltrane’s passing and thought a tribute was in order. So instead of just any Harry Potter characters, I decided to do bracelets inspired by the ones brilliantly brought to life by actors we’ve lost over the years.

*disclaimer* When referencing real historical figures, I’m referring to their portrayals in the musicals.

Challenge 1: Nurturing

No matter the cause
She moves with such skill;
She seems to know secrets
Which I never will
She stands still and listens
For what seems like days
She moves in the most modern ways

- She Moves in the Most Modern Ways; Diana: the musical

Colors used: black, brown, pink, and purple

Inspiration: Of all the bracelets in this set, this one was the most challenging! Finding the right song was a huge challenge, but I went with this one because Diana’s actions as described in the song sounded to me like things Hagrid would do. There’s not much overlap between Hagrid’s color palette and Diana’s, so it was hard finding colors that fit the characters and fit together. In the end, I went with 1 color inspired by each character (brown for Hagrid as a nod the ; purple for Diana because it appears in the show’s logo and is associated with royalty) and 2 colors that fit both (black to for Diana’s revenge dress and Hagrid’s hair & eye color in the books; pink for Hagrid’s umbrella and because that color is used a lot in in the Diana musical promo). I also made this a triple-strand bracelet to make it appear larger than life like both people who inspired it (Hagrid’s stature & Diana’s persona).

Dedicated to Robbie Coltrane

SPOILER!!: Hagrid bracelet

Challenge 2: Loyalty

When the fire's burnt
When the wind has blown
When the water's dried
You'll still find stone
My heart of stone

- Heart of Stone; Six

Colors used: black, white, silvery-gray; heart charm

Inspiration: This is my favorite song from Six, and the character who sings it, Jane Seymour, is so underrated! I relate so much to her quiet strength and loyalty to her loved ones, no matter what the cost, and these are traits that also apply to Narcissa Malfoy. For this bracelet, I used black and white to match Jane’s costume in the show and Narcissa’s hair in the movies, and silver (or the closest color I had to it) for its association with Jane on the Six merchandise and with Narcissa’s Hogwarts house. The heart charm is a nod to the title of the song, as well as Narcissa’s reputation for having a “heart of stone” in the more traditional sense of the phrase meaning “cold or unfeeling”.

Dedicated to Helen McCrory

SPOILER!!: Narcissa bracelet

Challenge 3: Eccentric

‘Cause there is magic here in my imagination
Just believe and it can be a creation
The stories we invented
All the fun that we found
Appearing here before your eyes
The world is upside down!

- The World is Upside Down; Finding Neverland

Colors used: red/white/purple tie-dye, blue gradient, purple gradient; moon & star charms

Inspiration: Albus Dumbledore and J.M. Barrie were seen as eccentric figures in their respective eras, but there’s a layer of wisdom to their eccentricity. I chose this song because I thought the line “There is magic in my imagination” sounded like something Dumbledore would say. For the bracelet, I used gradient and tie-dye threads so the changing colors would make it look more unique, or eccentric. I chose blue and purple because they appear a lot in the Finding Neverland promotional material. The blue also matches Dumbledore’s eye color, and purple is a color I’ve always associated with Dumbledore because a lot of the pre-movie merchandise had Dumbledore wearing purple robes. The red is a nod to Dumbledore’s Hogwarts house and his costume in the first two movies, and the white is a nod to his hair color. I added the moon and star charms because there are a lot of celestial motifs in Finding Neverland, and the moon is also a reference to Dumbledore’s half-moon glasses.

Dedicated to Richard Harris

SPOILER!!: Dumbledore bracelet

Challenge 4: Patience

Death doesn’t discriminate
Between the sinners and the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
History obliterates
In every picture it paints
It paints me and all my mistakes

- The World Was Wide Enough; Hamilton

Colors used: black, green gradient, silvery-gray

Inspiration: Both Severus Snape and Aaron Burr can be seen as the villains in their respective stories, and it’s easy to write them off as such, In this case, the prompt refers to patience not so much as a shared character trait but the patience it takes to see the good past the villain image. I made this a double-strand bracelet to represent the duality of both characters. For the colors, I used black because it’s a color traditionally associated with villainy, and it matches Snape’s hair, eye, and outfit color as described in the books. Green is one of the colors of Slytherin, of which Snape was Head of House, and it’s also associated with envy, a trait which both characters share. Silver, the other Slytherin color, is often associated with coming in 2nd place, which relates to Burr feeling 2nd best compared to Alexander Hamilton.

Dedicated to Alan Rickman

SPOILER!!: Snape bracelet

I love this concept, and the execution is perfect! I particularly loves the colors and ties you've made between the characters for Hagrid's bracelet, but I think they're all so lovely. The charms are a nice touch too!

Thank you so much! It means a lot to hear you like the Hagrid bracelet. That was the one I was least confident about!

Challenges 5 - 11: The Fairytale Collection

This set is, as the name suggests, inspired by fairytales. Since magic is an integral part of most fairytales, each prompt will be a spell that reminds me of a specific fairytale character or story. All of the songs used will come from fairytale-inspired (mostly Disney) musicals. Challenges will be listed in the order in which the musicals premiered, not the Disney movies upon which they were based.

Challenge 5: Wingardium Leviosa

In the arms of my love I'm flying
over mountain and meadow and glen
and I like it so well that for all I can tell
I may never come down again
I may never come down to earth again!

- Ten Minutes Ago; Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella

Colors used: white, lavender, light blue

Inspiration: Wingardium Leviosa is the levitation charm, and I thought this song had sort of a light, airy quality, both in lyrics and music. The most iconic version of Cinderella’s ball gown is blue, and that color, along with white and purple appear frequently on the logo for the 2015 Broadway production of Cinderella. To further reflect the light, airy nature of the prompt, I used the lightest shades I had of those colors.

SPOILER!!: Cinderella bracelet

Challenge 6: Evanesco

You promised you'd be there
Whenever I needed you
Whenever I call your name
You're not anywhere

- Endless Night; The Lion King

Colors used: gray gradient, blue gradient, orange gradient

Inspiration: This is my favorite song from The Lion King because I can relate to Simba losing a parent at a young age. I knew I wanted to use this song, but finding a spell to fit was hard. I went with Evanesco, the vanishing spell, because this song falls at a point when Simba has lost his father, and the life he knew has vanished. I used black and blue gradients for this bracelet to represent the night referenced in the song title. The orange gradient is a reference to Simba’s orange coloring in the animated movie and to the colors of a sunrise as referenced in a line at the end of the song, “I know that the night must end and that the sun will rise”.

SPOILER!!: Lion King bracelet

Challenge 7: Dissendium

This girl appears
And she is kind
And we're admitting
We'd give three cheers
To see you both forever sitting
Look at you sitting
On top of the world...

- Top of the World; The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Colors used: stony gray, olive, teal, purple

Inspiration: In the Harry Potter books, Dissendium opens up the one-eyed witch statue, and in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Esmeralda gets Quasimodo to open up by showing him kindness. I used teal and purple to represent Esmeralda’s color scheme, olive to represent Quasimodo’s, and a stony gray color to represent Quasimodo’s gargoyle friends.

SPOILER!!: HOND bracelet

Challenge 8: Confundo

I want to know where I belong
I want to know where I came from
I want to know the reason why I'm here
The way I am
Feeling the things I feel

- Everything That I Am; Tarzan

Colors used: dark green, green gradient, purple/yellow/red tie-dye

Inspiration: Tarzan spends most of his story confused as to who he is and why he doesn’t fit into the only family he’s ever known, so I thought Confundo was the perfect spell for him. In a different context, it could also relate to Jane Porter’s confusion upon meeting him. For this one, I wanted a lot of gradients and tie-dyes so the bracelet would look like it was confused what color it was supposed to be. I used greens to represent the story’s jungle setting, and the yellow and purple match Jane’s dress.

SPOILER!!: Tarzan bracelet

Challenge 9: Accio

It feels so right here
Warm as love...
Life seems to be
Almost calling to me
From this strange new world above!

- The World Above; The Little Mermaid

Colors used: sandy yellow, sky blue, green/blue/purple tie-dye, purple

Inspiration: Ariel is one of my favorite Disney princesses because I can relate to her wanting to be part of a world she wasn’t born into. She wants to be part of the human world; I want to be part of the nondisabled world. Like myself, she has a physical limitation (her mermaid tail) that hinders that dream, but she still finds a way around it. Whether or not that way was right is a moot point; my point was that she found one at all. I chose Accio for her spell to represent the human world summoning her. For the bracelet colors, I used a sandy yellow and sky blue to represent the land and blue and green to represent the sea. Green is also one of the main colors of her mermaid form, and I used purple to represent the other one.

SPOILER!!: The Little Mermaid bracelet

Challenge 10: Orchideous

I've wasted time
I've wasted me
So say I'm slow for my age
A late bloomer, Okay, I agree

- Proud of Your Boy; Aladdin

Colors used: white, red, purple, pink

Inspiration: I’m sort of bending the rules with this song, but since it didn’t appear in the final version of the Disney movie, it technically counts. I chose Orchideous for this prompt because it makes flowers bloom in a sense by conjuring them, and this is the quintessential late-bloomer song. I used white, red, and purple for this bracelet to represent Aladdin’s costume color palette and added pink for the color light Orchideous emits.

SPOILER!!: Aladdin bracelet

Challenge 11: Immobulus

'Cause I can't show you
I'm not as cold as I seem
There are things you cannot know
And it's dangerous to dream

- Dangerous to Dream; Frozen

Colors used: sky blue, blue gradient, white

Inspiration: Full disclosure, Elsa is one of my least-favorite Disney characters, but this spell seemed like a given for her. Immobulus is also known as the Freezing charm, which not only relates to Elsa’s ice powers but also to the way she became frozen in her old habits and allowed her emotions to become frozen over her years in isolation. I used a blue gradient for this bracelet because Immobulus produces blue light, as well as white and a lighter shade of blue to match Elsa’s ice dress.

SPOILER!!: Frozen bracelet

Challenges 12 - 15: The Monochrome Collection

This set is exactly what it says on the tin, bracelets in varying shades of the same color. Each bracelet is inspired by a different student character I’ve played in the school rpg, and the songs are sung by characters associated with a particular color.

Challenge 12: Yellow

There’s been a change in me
A kind of moving on
Though what I used to be
I still depend upon

- A Change in Me; Beauty and the Beast

Colors used: sandy yellow, bright yellow, yellow gradient; rose charm

Inspiration: I was originally going to do a Beauty and the Beast inspired bracelet for the previous collection (in case anyone was wondering why I had every Disney musical but that one), but when trying to come up with a musical character associated with the color yellow, the only ones that came to mind were Belle or Heather McNamara from Heathers. That got a certain Disney-obsessed Hufflepuff screaming at me to do a Belle bracelet, so this one is dedicated to my current student, Desiree Marchand. Belle is Desiree’s favorite princess, and her dress matches Desiree’s house color so it was a perfect fit. I chose this song because it reflects the changes Desiree has gone through this term, both the physical changes of randomly turning into a wombat and the emotional ones that come with it. She’s always strived to be a living version of a Disney princess, but now she feels she’s no longer beautiful enough to be that so she’s not sure what she’s supposed to be.

SPOILER!!: Desiree/Belle bracelet

Challenge 13: Blue

We start with stars in our eyes
We start believing that we belong
But every sun doesn't rise
And no one tells you where you went wrong

- Waving Through A Window; Dear Evan Hansen

Colors used: light blue, purplish-blue, blue gradient; star charm

Inspiration: This prompt was practically tailor-made for my former Ravenclaw, Heathcliff Jones. His favorite color is midnight blue, and it’s one of his house colors. Not only that, but blue is also associated with the title character in Heath’s favorite musical, Dear Evan Hansen. I chose this song because it fits Heath’s hidden insecurities and reserved nature, and it’s his favorite in the show. The star charm alludes to the above line from the song, as well as Heath’s love of astronomy and all things Star Wars and his dreams of someday becoming a theatrical star.

SPOILER!!: Heath/Evan Hansen bracelet

Challenge 14: Green

I'm through accepting limits
'Cause someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But 'til I try, I'll never know!

- Defying Gravity; Wicked

Colors used: dark green gradient, sea green, light green gradient, lime green; moon charm

Inspiration: As soon as I saw this prompt, my mind immediately went to Elphaba, the green-skinned witch from Wicked. Elphaba is intelligent, independent, and unafraid to question authority or stand up for what she believes, and that sounds like my former Ravenclaw, Fantine (Tina) Dantes. Tina was a Beauxbatons transfer, and while green doesn’t match her Hogwarts house color, it does match her Beauxbatons one (Bellefeuille). I used sea green to match Tina’s post color and lime to match Elphaba’s complexion. I was going to add a star charm to represent the sky and “defying gravity” but went with a moon instead because I didn’t want to give Tina’s bracelet the exact same charm as Heath’s.

SPOILER!!: Tina/Elphaba bracelet

Challenge 15: Scarlet

Have you asked of yourselves
What's the price you might pay?
Is it simply a game
For rich young boys to play?
The color of the world
Is changing day by day…

- Red and Black; Les Misérables

Colors used: red, dark red, red gradient

Inspiration: Fiyero Jones is Heath’s older brother and my first ever school rpg character. Although he shares a name with a Wicked character, he reminds me more of Enjolras from Les Miserables. Every production I’ve ever seen of that show has Enjolras wearing a red vest. Red represents the two characters’ fiery passionate natures, not so much in the romantic sense but in theri passion for their respective interests and causes (quidditch for Fiyero, revolution for Enjolras). It’s also the color of Fiyero’s Hogwarts house (Gryffindor) and one of the colors of his favorite quidditch team (the Ballycastle Bats).

SPOILER!!: Fiyero/Enjolras bracelet

my gosh, so many neat bracelets in here already. I have to say too, I really like the explanations and thought processes for the colours you choose for each one, really nice touch and love to see where you're going with it. the eccentric one is so pretty, the way the colours blend together and the way it's been made.

and I am particularly drawn to the loyalty bracelet because I always think black/grey/white look so nice together, especially with the charm here, but the mix of colours in the patience bracelet is my absolute fave. the green one is probably a close second (can you tell I like the colour green).

Omgee, thank you so much for commenting! lol yes, I can tell you like green, and btw, you have excellent taste. The green bracelets are among my favorites too!

Challenges 16 - 20: The Horror Collection

I knew going into this challenge that I’d eventually do something horror-themed because I’m a huge fan of classic horror, and many of my favorite musicals are based on those stories. It also fits with October being Spooky Season. Last set was inspired by my student characters; this time it’s my adult rpg characters’ time to shine. All songs come from a horror-themed musical, and the prompts are all magical objects, tangible or otherwise.

Challenge 16: Mirror of Erised

A new life -
What I wouldn't give
To have a new life!
One thing I have learned
As I go through life:
Nothing is for free
Along the way!

- A New Life; Jekyll & Hyde

Colors used: sky blue, magenta, pink/purple/blue/white tie-dye, red gradient

Inspiration: Katja Westergaard was one of my former ministry characters and my first ever SSRPG character. She was a member of a despised Danish wizarding family, and like Lucy from Jekyll & Hyde, she wanted a better life for herself… which she eventually achieved through her years in the DIMC. I chose this song and this prompt to reflect both characters’ desire for something better. I used Katja’s favorite colors, blue and magenta, and red to match Lucy’s costumes in the original Broadway production of Jekyll & Hyde. I didn’t have colors to match the Mirror of Erised exactly, so I used white because it’s a color that reflects light, similar to a mirror reflection. The white strand also had shades of blue and magenta too.

SPOILER!!: Mirror of Erised bracelet

Challenge 17: Time-turner

The moment time stands still
Is the moment that the writing's on the walls.
The words are clear as ringing bells
That pride is present right before the fall

- Sail Me Away; Lestat

Colors used: gold, yellow gradient, red gradient, sandy brown

Inspiration: Like the title character of this musical, my former shopkeeper Vitani Kama had a taste for the finer things, and like the show itself, she wasn’t as known as she deserved to be. Prior to her Diagon Alley career, Vitani was a famous artist until she was cheated out of her money and notoriety by a dishonest partner. I thought the time-turner fit her because all she wanted was to go back to the life she had before, and this song comes at a point when Lestat, like Vitani, has lost everything. I used a lot of gold and yellows for this bracelet because gold is Vitani’s favorite color, and the time-turner was gold in the movies. The sandy brown is a reference to the sand inside the time-turner and the sandy desert climate of Senegal, Vitani’s birthplace. The red represents Lestat’s costume color palette in the show, his appetite for blood as a vampire, and Vitani’s anger at her loss of notoriety.

SPOILER!!: Time-turner bracelet

Challenge 18: Elder Wand

Demons will charm you with a smile
For a while
But in time
Nothing can harm you
Not while I'm around

- Not While I’m Around; Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Colors used: orange gradient, red gradient, burgundy, brown

Inspiration: Normandie Carton, my current Ministry character, grew up believing she had no living family. She had to learn to defend herself at a young age, and she always wanted to put those skills to use by becoming an Auror like her dad. I thought the Elder Wand was a good match for her strength and desire to vanquish enemies, and this song fits with her protective nature. For the bracelet colors, I used reds and oranges to match her red hair and fiery personality, burgundy to match her dad’s post color as a nod to her desire to follow in his footsteps, and brown for the wand wood. The elder wand is kinda knotty-looking in the movies, so I added a series of knots to this bracelet.

SPOILER!!: Elder wand bracelet

Challenge 19: Unbreakable Vow

To dim the sun before the summer ends,
to burn the castle down,
Before the princess is awake,
To kill our love when it`s still so alive,
I`ll keep my word and
My heart will break

- Before the Summer Ends; Dracula: the musical

Colors used: red, burgundy, blue, black gradient

Inspiration: I originally had this song in mind for a different character but thought it was a better fit for my current professor, Norman Carton. He started teaching at Hogwarts the same year the Neo-Alliance took over. Although he’d never willingly show any vulnerable emotion, he blamed himself for failing to protect the students, and he was so guilt-ridden that he vowed to stay at Hogwarts until all the students present that term graduate so he could protect them from further trauma. This song from Dracula is essentially a promise Jonathan Harker makes, and the Unbreakable Vow prompt refers to the promises made by both men. The Unbreakable Vow is described as fire-like in the books, so I used red and made the bracelet a wrap-around design to represent the way it wraps around the participants’ hands. The burgundy matches Norman’s post color, and it looks similar to Ilvermorny’s (his former school) cranberry, Blue represents the other Ilvermorny color and Ravenclaw, of which Norman is Head of House. Black is commonly associated with evil, sadness, and loss, all of which fit the mood of his first term at Hogwarts that led him to make that vow.

SPOILER!!: Unbreakable Vow bracelet

Challenge 20: Blood Pact

However far you roam
Or what you do
There always is one person
Who believes in you
It matter not the road you choose
For one thing you can never lose
You’ll always be the light that shines
Within your father’s eyes

- Your Father’s Eyes; Frankenstein: a new musical

Colors used: black gradient, blue gradient, pink gradient, red gradient

Inspiration: When I heard this song, my thoughts immediately went to my former charms professor, Gaston Marchand. He was known for his nurturing, fatherly nature, and these lines sound exactly like something he’d say to his daughter. Funnily enough, the actor playing Alphonse Frankenstein on the soundtrack, Richard White, is also known for voicing the Disney character who inspired my professor’s name, so this was meant to be! In this case, the blood pact prompt was meant to represent the bond between parent and child, and the double-strand design was meant to resemble an infinity symbol. There’s a lot of blacks, grays, and white on the Frankenstein logo, so I used gradient threads that had those colors. I added pink to represent Desiree (her favorite color) and red for cohesiveness with the other bracelets in this set and as a reference to the wizarding world version of a blood pact. The blue is Gaston’s favorite color, and it also matches his eye color, which alludes to the song title.

SPOILER!!: Blood pact bracelet

Thank you so much! I'm glad you like the Elder Wand bracelet. I wasn't sure about that one because the knotwork didn't turn out as symmetrical as I wanted.

Also, you need to see the DEH play if you ever get the chance. So much better than the movie!

Challenges 21-24: The Literary Collection

From here on out, all the prompts will be traits associated with a particular musical character. These ones won’t be tied to anything Harry Potter-related in order to give these characters a chance to shine in their own right. The four musicals featured in this set are, as the name implies, all based on classic literature. The order of the challenges is meant to tell a story of how my discovery of one musical led me down a research rabbit hole to the others and ultimately to my favorite Broadway star.

Challenge 21: Unrequited

She took my love
But now it’s plain to see
She’s no time for one
As lowly born as me

- I Will Have My Vengeance; Wuthering Heights: the musical

Colors used: black, blue gradient, green gradient, green/blue/purple tie-dye

Inspiration: I found this musical completely by accident in 2020. One of my friends had watched a Wuthering Heights movie but couldn’t remember which one it was when I asked, and in the process of trying to identify that movie, I learned that this show was a thing. This musical has one of the most confusingly structured soundtracks I’ve ever heard, but I do like almost all of the songs on it. I chose this one because it describes Heathcliff’s belief that his feelings for Cathy are unrequited. For the bracelet colors, I used black and blue to reflect Heathcliff’s dark nature, and the blue is also a subtle nod to that other Heathcliff (my charrie). I thought the green gradient and tie-dye colors looked like colors one might find on an English moor, and the twisted double strand design represents how inextricably linked to each other the two main characters are.

SPOILER!!: Wuthering Heights bracelet

Challenge 22: Cold

The man inspires a thousand lies
The lover makes his choice
Remaining coldly in control
Aware that sadly on the whole
It is the fool who bears his soul
I’ll give the man a voice

- A Misunderstood Man; Heathcliff: the musical

Colors used: black, blue gradient, purple gradient, white

Inspiration: Same source material, same character, different show! When I learned about the other Wuthering Heights musical, I thought, how cool would it be if my actor kid Heathcliff someday played this Heathcliff? So I researched as much as I could about that show and in the process learned about this lesser known but better structured musical adaptation. I kept the same black and blue colors from the other Heathcliff bracelet for cohesiveness’s sake but added purple and white for a cooler color palette to reflect his cold nature.

SPOILER!!: Heathcliff bracelet

Challenge 23: Brave

I will never lose faith
I will never lose heart
For you have restored my trust
And I know you're afraid
I'm as scared as you are
But willing to be brave
Brave enough for love

- Brave Enough for Love; Jane Eyre: the musical

Colors used: black, blue gradient, gray, cream; flame charm

Inspiration: We can thank the YouTube algorithm for me discovering this show! After researching the two Wuthering Heights musicals, I started getting a lot of recommended videos of other shows based on classic literature, including this one. I was never much of a Jane Eyre fan and have mixed feelings about the musical itself, but I love the songs. This one is my favorite because its message can apply to all forms of love, not just the romantic kind, and it inspires me to be brave for my loved ones. There’s a lot of blue and gray in the Jane Eyre promotional material, so I used those colors in the bracelet. I added black and cream/beige because those colors are prominent in the main characters’ costumes, and the flame charm represents the fire that occurs near the end of the story and the use of fire imagery/foreshadowing throughout the show.

SPOILER!!: Jane Eyre bracelet

Challenge 24: Kindness

The low companions, low desires
I scorn but yield to every day
Make me unworthy of your caring
Yet you still don’t turn away

- If Dreams Came True; A Tale of Two Cities: the musical

Colors used: burgundy, black, gray, light gray

Inspiration: This is another musical that I discovered thanks to the YouTube algorithm, and it couldn’t have happened at a better time. I found this song at a dark time in my life and saw so much of myself in this version of Sydney Carton. Seeing the way he became a better person inspired me to do the same, so this is not just my favorite song from A Tale of Two Cities, but my favorite song from any musical ever! I knew going in that I was going to do something with this; it was just a matter of finding the right prompt to fit the song. I chose this one because it was Lucie Manette’s kindness that transformed Sydney Carton. For the colors, I used burgundy because Sydney wore a burgundy tie in the video I saw of this song. He wears a lot of dark colors, black in the Broadway version and gray in the PBS concert version, so I incorporated those colors and ordered them from dark to light to represent his lightening outlook and in a way, turn to the light.

SPOILER!!: ATOTC bracelet

Default Challenges 25-30
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Challenges 25 - 30: The Tribute Collection

The final six bracelets in my 2022 Seektober challenge are dedicated to my favorite Broadway actor, who I had the honor of meeting last year. He inspired me with his art at a low point in my life and treated me with kindness and encouragement when even my own family did not. Each bracelet in this set is inspired by a different character he’s played over the years, going in chronological order, and the song lyrics are sung by each corresponding character.

Challenge 25: Regret

Now I've lost
Soon I will go in the mist of day
And you never will know
How I loved
How I loved you…

- If I Loved You (reprise); Carousel

Colors used: red, black, white; horse charm

Inspiration: Billy Bigelow, the main character of Carousel, makes a lot of foolish choices in his life and is ultimately left with regrets when one of those choices causes him to die before his time. For his bracelet, I used red to reflect his hot temper and because his costume for the 1994 Broadway production has a red shirt. The black represents his death and misspent life, and the white represents his quest for redemption. I also added a horse charm to represent the titular carousel, where Billy works at the start of the story.

SPOILER!!: Billy Bigelow bracelet

Challenge 26: Cursed

How long must this go on?
This cruel trick of fate?
I simply made one careless wrong decision
And then the witch was gone
And left me in this state
An object of revulsion and derision

How Long Must This Go On?; Beauty and the Beast

Colors used: blue gradient, light blue, yellow gradient; rose charm

Inspiration: This prompt was a no-brainer, as the Beast spends most of the story cursed to remain in that form. Every version of the Beast’s costume I’ve ever seen, including the original Broadway production, is blue and gold, so I used those colors in the bracelet. I added a rose charm to represent the enchanted rose, and I chose this particular charm design because the background looks like an inverted bell jar.

SPOILER!!: Beast bracelet

Challenge 27: Bitter

They promised me a prize
What about my prize?
I want my prize!

- Another National Anthem; [musical name redacted]

Colors used: black, olive, beige

Inspiration: I’m not going to go into much detail about this character or the show so as not to inadvertently say something against the SS rules, and I’ve redacted the title out of an abundance of caution. All I can say is Leon Czolgosz does a terrible thing, and his actions are motivated by bitterness. His costume in the 2004 Broadway production uses an entirely neutral color palette, so I used beige and olive for his bracelet. Black is associated with villainy, darkness, and anarchy, which all fall in line with Leon’s personality and worldview.

SPOILER!!: Leon Czolgosz bracelet

Challenge 28: Secrecy

If ever I would leave you
How could it be in springtime?
Knowing how in spring I'm bewitched by you so?
Oh, no! Not in springtime!
Summer, winter or fall!
No, never could I leave you at all!

- If Ever I Would Leave You; Camelot

Colors used: blue gradient, teal, gray, pink

Inspiration: I’m really not a fan of this character, this song, or this musical in general, but I was running out of time and ideas and this one fit with the set. I chose this prompt for Lancelot because he falls in love with Gwenevere, and for most of the show, their love affair is shrouded in secrecy. There’s a different song from Camelot that better fits with the prompt, but I couldn’t use it because it wasn’t Lancelot’s song. So this one won by default. Sorry for the clunky association! Lancelot’s costume in the 2007 US touring production has a lot of blue, teal, and gray, so I used those colors and added a pop of pink to represent Gwenevere.

SPOILER!!: Lancelot bracelet

Challenge 29: Love

Yet why did I allow that man
To touch my soul and teach me love?
He treated me like any other
He gave me his trust
He called me brother

- Valjean’s Soliloquy; Les Misérables

Colors used: navy, blue gradient, red

Inspiration: I almost gave this prompt to another character but decided it was a better fit for Jean Valjean because his whole character arc is about love. He’s inspired to do good by an act of love and spends the rest of his life spreading love to others. Valjean’s most recognizable costume is the army uniform he wears in the first half of Act 2, so I used that navy and red color scheme for the bracelet. It looked a bit boring with just those two colors, so I added the blue gradient as well (no symbolism behind that color, just an artistic choice!)

SPOILER!!: Jean Valjean bracelet

Challenge 30: Lonely/solitude

Say you'll share with me
One love, one lifetime
Lead me, save me from my solitude

- Point of No Return; The Phantom of the Opera

Colors used: black, white; skull charm

Inspiration: If there’s one Broadway character that exemplifies this prompt, it’s the Phantom of the Opera! He was born with a facial disfigurement which caused him to be bullied and ostracized by society, so he lived a life of solitude. I made this bracelet black and white because the Phantom’s most recognizable costume consists almost exclusively of those two colors, and the black and white also represents how the Phantom’s morality isn’t all one or the other. He’s not all good (white), nor all evil (black). Probably should’ve arranged the colors differently because this bracelet looks like zebra stripes! I couldn’t find a charm to match the Phantom’s half-mask, but this skull one looks a lot like the red death mask he wore in the Masquerade scene.

SPOILER!!: Phantom of the Opera bracelet

Congrats and wow, you did it! I can't believe how many bracelets you made in such a short amount of time, and they all look so thoughtful and well executed. I know I already told you that I love seeing how your brain works, but this has been such a cool way of organizing and explaining things all along the way.

Can you say who the actor is? Should we guess? Also, I think it would be ok to mention the name of that musical, just in case you wondered. <3<3

Thank you so much for your lovely comments! And so sorry for the confusion! The actor's name is James Barbour (also my professor's FC, so he's in like half my siggies). I swear I thought I had his name on there somewhere... that's what I get for postinf while sleep-deprived!

The redacted musical title was Assassins, but I know that word comes with a lot of family-unfriendly implications, which I tried to avoid explicitly referencing in the lyrics & explanations.
