Let's face it. I have the best intentions when it comes to making art. Not only is it my joy, but it's also my livelihood. But I also have shiny object syndrome and I have a difficult time finishing what I start. I get very excited about starting a project and I'm normally pretty ambitious about ideas and what I want to create. But before I'm halfway through something I have another exciting idea I want to try. And who can blame me? With all the amazing inspiration and creative ideas out there, there is always something I want to do next. And I'm often too impatient to wait, so I'm on to something else, intending to still finish what I started... maybe later. Couple my shiny object syndrome with all the things that keep me busy in a day, and... well.. all my unfinished artwork could fill a museum no one wants to visit.
......but I have good intentions.
This is my third year joining in on Seektober and I have yet to complete an entire month. But I am ambitious enough to think that this is the year!! I will once again work on the Aparecium challenge, completing whichever prompt that day speaks to me most. I might try to use my characters as inspiration and it's my intention to use pen and ink, maybe with a pop of color in another medium.
so first of all, don't even worry about the toad in the frog choir because it turns out that the "frogs" in the frog choir are, in fact, toads. SO IT'S ALL GOOD. as is the toad here, which are smh honestly such a pain to draw so I really admire what you've done here. I enjoy the shading (of course) and the shaping on those round little toad limbs, and the pop of the regal royal purple cushion.
I'm always in awe of your character art too, I'd love to be able to depict my own characters with the skill that you do one day. particularly drawn to karleigh's hair, and the shading on the cauldron, and all the little details. ugh. beautiful.
Henryyyyy, what a pal. true bestie. harrowing other dimension experience, but uhhh... at least the kitten was spared? cats are HARD to draw (at least in my experience) but this one is so well done and so cute, I would like to pet it for many hours. the detailing and shading on the bow is excellent too. i love this so much and i love the journey of the prompt too (except for. yk. the aforementioned harrowing experience for poor henry)

That video was actually really helpful in like...calming my nerves a little I remember actually giving the whole random lines a try for my Extendable Ear prompt during the first Seektober and I think that was at your encouragement
I love the frog choir story. Legend has it that some of those descendants have still wiggling and hopped their way into the chorus to this day I really like the coils...tendrils...the drapey thingies on the pillow.
Oh my heart. Sweet Karleigh but hey, got those goldfish like bits leaping out of the cauldron! Doing a mighty fine job I love all the details here, from the cutting board with its knife and little bits to her HAIR. I love her hair and how much movement and texture it has. Also, that cauldron is really nice looking...like really really nice
That kitty is SO cute. I just want to pluck them right out of that box and cuddle them. So fluffy and those little paws that ribbon too though. Like. Wow. Gorgeous line work.

I love that little kitten! The eyes are so good, and I feel like the colored pencil texture on the fur really makes it look so soft.
Aw thank you! I was worried that the colored pencil made him look flat, but I will take soft!

Oh thank you! I do like how her hair turned out too. Hopefully it's clear that she tried to tame her curls into a ponytail lol. Best hairstyle for potions, I think.

Ah ok, that's good then lol. I was going to say that I couldn't tell the difference and probably neither could Levi, but he'd given me a very pointed look and said of course he knew the difference. After I started shading, I kind of wished I had just gone with toad/frog markings like in the reference I used, but I suppose it turned out ok regardless.
Aw thank you! You are too kind to me. I did use a reference of Alisha Boe when working on Karleigh and her prompt and I wasn't really sure about the likeness achieved in pen as I feel like I work better with shading in pencil and colored pencil, but I really did like her hair so I'm glad you did too. Lol yeah poor Henry lmao. It all worked out in the end. Thank you so much. The bow was my favorite part.

Oh good. I think it's a really good video for explaining the basics of some different types of shading and great to practice. I liked the video you shared with me the other day about sketching in pen and I think I'm going to try more of that myself. Lmao I think it's very possible that more than one of those toads ended up in the choir.. though at this point, might be grandchildren as I do not know how long toads live. It was meant to be fringe like in some of the pictures I saw, but thank you, I'm glad you like. Haha, I'm glad they did okay with their potion. That was the best Karleigh could hope for, though I'm not sure either of them should actually ingest it. Thank you, the hair and cauldron were my favorite bits to this. I'm glad the kitty conveyed its fluffiness, because he is very fluffy irl... or ic at least lol.
Day 6: Wizard's Chess Minerva McGonagall
Ink Pen and Colored Pencil
SPOILER!!: Wizard's Chess
It's been a little while since I posted in here and I know I am getting more than a little behind. Without going into details, something tragic happened here last week that's affected me pretty badly and I just haven't felt like posting. But I have been drawing a lot as I've been processing things and maybe to distract myself, so I have four more completed and I've pencil sketched out about 12 more that I need to ink and color. So maybe I'm not quite as behind as I thought. I'm going to post them soon, but I think I'm going to try to space them out just a bit.
For day 6, I knew I had to do wizard's chess because it is a favorite pastime of my character Phoenix to play with his buddy Mercer. There could be a lot of cool takes on this prompt, I think, since the pieces are supposed to actually look like the roles they have and are animated, but I stuck with a simple scene of Phoenix playing a game. The opponent could possibly be Mercer, but I also don't think I got a very good resemblance in that squished profile, so I suppose that is up to interpretation on who it is. I kind of struggled with this one in those poses and the perspective and the hands and the shirt and just ugh. I guess it all turned out ok in the end. The colored pencil is pretty subtle as it is just shades of grey and white on the chess pieces, but I wanted that to be more of the focus as that was the prompt.

Day 7: Teamwork Pomona Sprout
Ink Pen and Colored Pencil
SPOILER!!: Teamwork
Teamwork had me thinking of the time Hero Ramsey paired up with his mate Joshua Miller in Muggle Studies for their long term project of taking care of a baby doll. As it was simulated to act just like a real baby, it quickly became a harrowing project, causing the boys to try to alter the mechanics of the doll to make it stop crying. Hero is really into muggle technology but I'm not sure how successful they were with this endeavor lol.

Yours 'teamwork' piece is SO cool {love the colour against the pencils marks}, and I'm laughing at the story behind it. I too would like to know the extent to which the boys were successful

Day 8: Sherbet Lemon Albus Dumbledore
Ink Pen and Colored Pencil
SPOILER!!: Sherbet Lemon
I am pretty sure that Sherbet Lemon is some kind of candy, but I’m unfamiliar with that as an American, so I think of it more as Lemon Sherbe(r)t, in an ice cream sort of sense. And naturally that brought me to Mariel De La Garza, née Morgan, my very first character. When she was a child, her favorite ice cream was Lemondrop and she would always order that at Florean’s every summer. Now that she is in her mid-fifties, her taste might be a little more refined, but she still loves a good Lemondrop ice cream.

It was absolutely evident in your Karleigh piece that her hair was tied back into a ponytail, which just made it even more impressive imo!
A Phoenix piece! We certainly hope Phoenix is winning in this game you've so beautifully drawn!
And I certainly hope things are getting better for you. <3
I keep hearing about this amazing Muggle Studies project and I'm so upset I hadn't come back to site yet to be a part It sounds like it gave so many fun memories for all the characters! And I love the way you've drawn and attached your memory for this one! Those color pops with the wire are so eye catching and really brings your focus in to the mechanical side of the "baby"
The sherbet lemon! The ice cream looks so smooth and the detail on the spoon. *chefs kiss* Again, obsessed with the color pop, and the details as well in that lemon!
Thank you for continuing to share your craft with us, MJ!

Hero and Josh what a duo they are and how BAD they were with this project I'm pretty sure they passed by the skin of their teeth. The pops of color with those wires is SO nice and I really enjoy how you captured the gears and other mechanical bits.
Um...lemon sherbet is one of my favorites EVER and reminds me so much of home (it is my dad's favorite too). I would like to just...dive into that dish.

You are far too kind to me <3 Thank you so much for your lovely comments. I'm kind of glad I decided to do these pops of color with the ink drawing and especially putting a character inspired spin to them. It's making them even more fun that way. And yeah, it really was a fun project - Hero and Joshua were kind of ridiculous with it lolol

Aww thank you. I'm glad the chess scene turned out okay. Lmao, Hero is glad to have passed. When a mess of a project XD I'm glad I kept that one relatively simple. Ah yes, lemon sherbet is one of my favorites too.. I could really go for a lemon italian ice right now.

Day 9: Chocolate Frog Card Albus Dumbledore
Ink Pen and Colored Pencil
SPOILER!!: Chocolate Frog Card
“Not another Whittebrook.”
I suppose it would be pretty cool the first time you saw your dad on a chocolate frog card, but I imagine it would get kind of old after the fourth or fifth duplicate when you were trying to collect them all. Even though that’s a picture of Henry (or it’s supposed to be.. It wasn’t easy drawing tiny details in pen), this prompt is for his oldest son Wiley. He, like his dad at that age, likes to collect chocolate frog trading cards. At least the duplicates are good for trading. A little pop of color on the card itself, though maybe I should have colored Henry too.

this is SO cute (also, the details on those cards down on the table ). I seriously need to take a class from you on drawing hands and fingers I also think its kind of nice without having colored in Henry on the card - it makes the color of the card itself really really POP and feel super vibrant.
Also, would love a series of chocolate frog cards as illustrated by you

Aww thank you. I like drawing them, but I know they can be tricky, especially getting proportions right. I wasn't a fan of my Henry drawing - trying to get it tiny was tough and made him turn out wonky lol - these pictures are a little bit bigger than actual size - and I think that was part of why I didn't color him too. But I suppose it works as a color pop anyway. Oooh that sounds like a fun project... I will have to keep that in mind, because of course the cards need to be updated to our current rpg time
Day 10: Cauldron Severus Snape
Ink Pen and Colored Pencil
SPOILER!!: cauldron
I wanted to do something different than show a cauldron being used for brewing potions, so my thoughts turned towards my character Terra who is working part-time at Potage's Cauldron Shop while going to uni. It certainly isn't a glamorous job being a scum scrubber, but it's nice to earn a little extra money that is all her own. Here she is with a scrub brush because unfortunately magic can't clean everything.

So much to catch up on in here! I'm so flattered that Mercer got a mention in your Phoenix sketch, and I think you did a nice job with a challenging perspective there. I'm in awe of your ability to draw the things in your brain, for real!
The perspective and color in the robo-baby makes it so interesting to look at, especially those little pops of color in the wires. This is probably one of my favorites!
I have all the things to catch up on here. I think your wizards chess prompt came out really well, and I would not have guessed you'd struggled with those things if you hadn't mentioned it. look at little phoenix ;; and... okay, your teamwork prompt got me. what a chaotic assignment that was, but still it made them work as a team... in a roundabout way
and I loooove your sherbe(r)t lemon piece, that splash of colour and the shading really sets it off nicely and the whole thing has made me hungry for lemon sorbet. like I'm looking at it and I know it tastes good. also what witchcraft helped you get the scoops so well rounded
the colouring on the chocolate frog card is amazing, and the hAND, it's so well... I want to say rendered. let's go with rendered. all the details you got into that whole piece ;;
and Terraaaaaa. adore seeing something inspired by her in here. the details of how her fingers are gripping the cauldron and then the shaping and shading on the cauldron itself, I love it.

Lol yes, I'm really making the effort to get caught up.. but I still have a long way to go. Thank you! It doesn't always end up looking like what I have in my brain but I do try. I really liked the way the robo baby turned out too. It was more of a simple drawing but maybe that's what made it effective.

Thanks so much! I'm having a really good time trying to connect each prompt with one of my characters, without repeating any. Remembering a story or something about them, like that iconic muggle studies assignment, is fun. Thank you for appreciating my hands, I really gave them a lot of effort. And I appreciate you catching up with me and all of your compliments!
Day 11: Blood Pact Albus Dumbledore
Ink Pen and Colored Pencil
SPOILER!!: blood pact
The prompt of blood pact gave me the image of kids making pinky promises. It's taken pretty seriously by them like a sworn oath or I suppose a blood pact. I imagined my Jordan siblings - Kendra (my Ministry DH), Milo (RIP), and Lynette (mother to Remi, Brandon, and Benjee) - were really close and inseparable when they were little and just maybe they had this 3 way pinky promise. Don't know what this particular pinky promise is about, but I made myself sad. Alas, the consequences of my own actions. Not a big fan of my messy sketching here and the proportions are slightly off, but I did like the concept at least. Each sibling gets their own color.

Thanks, I really do like practicing with hands. I actually had someone take a picture of my hand in one of the poses so I could use that as a reference lol. But yes, you should definitely try drawing more in pen. I feel like I'm getting mildly better after drawing like this all month. Yeah ;_; I know.. me too
Day 12: Herbology Pomona Sprout
Ink Pen and Colored Pencil
SPOILER!!: Herbology
I chose Herbology for this day's prompt and, while Herbology could work for a few of my characters, I felt it worked best for Celyn Ashburry-Hawthorne. A few of the prompts could have worked for her really when I saw them - kindness or many of the plant or animal related ones - but I decided on Herbology. While Celyn does love the subject herself and all things nature, her mother was former Herbology professor, Seren Bentley. And when Celyn was at Hogwarts, she would often go into the gardens on the grounds near the greenhouses. There was a bench that she would sit on and be surrounded by all the flowers and greenery, imagine which ones her mother might have planted, and sometimes write her letters, in order to feel close to her family while she was there.

Day 13: Tabby Cat Minerva McGonagall
Ink Pen and Colored Pencil
SPOILER!!: Tabby Cat
Morgan McCarthy used to have a really cool cat he called Schnitzel and taught how to ride a skateboard. Unfortunately, when the Neo Alliance took over Hogwarts and had their big battle there, Schnitzel ended up missing at the end of it. It’s thought that he ran away during the battle, either into the Forbidden Forest or to Hogsmeade. Morgan spent some time looking for him when he returned the next term and even put up some lost cat posters in Hogsmeade, hoping that someone saw him. He never did find him and ended up getting another cat a while later, but he really hopes that a kind family ended up taking Schnitzel in. Ignore my messy handwriting here (let's say it's Morgan's), but I am kind of a fan of the wood texture.

Day 14: Eccentric Albus Dumbledore
Ink Pen and Colored Pencil
SPOILER!!: Eccentric
My most eccentric brain child is most likely Nessarose Glendower. Former History of Magic professor and musical theatre enthusiast, she was so quirky and fun to play. Anyone remember her "Make an Entrance" sign? Good times.. I miss playing her. She often wore her purple tap shoes to class, sometimes even broke into dance during a lecture, so of course this prompt is for her.

Oooh, you're working hard in here, MJ! I love what you're doing so much, especially the little expressive pops of color. That wood work texture on the cat poster is SO interesting and detailed, and I think Phoebe's heart is soft over Morgan losing his cat like that. Maybe they can get a hamster with shared custody.
The hands in your blood pact are also just beautifully done. And the flowers. And the bench. Ugh, all so good.

I'm really trying to get this done... but I think I'm going to fall sort lol. I'm a little more than halfway done with the prompts, but even with the extension of the event through November 4, I don't think I can get 13 done in 3 or 4 days. But I'm still going!
And thank you! They do both have their own cats now though, so they're probably fine lol. Morgan was pretty sad for a while though.
Day 15: Portrait Albus Dumbledore
Ink Pen and Colored Pencil
SPOILER!!: Portrait
Ansley Finch was another one of my History of Magic professors and his passion was painting magical portraits. I think he retired from teaching to focus solely on painting, though he probably teaches art classes once in a while in his spare time. Fun fact: I based a lot of his personality on a coworker lol. Anyway, here are some of the supplies he uses when painting portraits - his palette with paint dried from previous projects, brush, palette knife, tubes of paint, and of course his wand to infuse that magic in there.
