Hello hello, and welcome to my scribblings.
Here I'll be attempting the Luna challenge, armed
with a new notebook, an old biro, and a pencil or two.

Feel free to come hang out a while.

im such a sneak!!!

I LOVE this experimentation with the brush pens! The blending turned out so nicely. I have a set of tombow dual brush pens but cannot for the life of me figure out how to get them to work right because i am incapable of nice things, so i am very much in awe each time you use them for prompts!! TEACH ME YOUR WAYS.

Aw, thank you Suzy! I'm looking forward to seeing your inspiration of the Luna prompts too.

As for hanging stuff on my wall, I haven't actually hung any of my watercolors. I intend to at some point, but I'm not there yet. PLENTY of room for your pretty calligraphy.

AND I KNOW BUCKEYES!
I definitely need to play around with blending these pens some more, and seeing what works best. I got some cool effects on my test page, but the pigment didn't seem to sink quite so deeply into that paper. Overall, I think the spidery edging adds rather than takes away...my original plan would have been far too clean for the mood of the quote.

You really should! I have last year's Seektober up above my desk still :3 Also, this made me think an art collab or swap would be pretty cool.

You really are...you did it to me again.

I'm very much still learning how to use them, especially for calligraphy. This was actually the first one I've used them as brush pens during Seektober, as previous prompts I've only used the fine tip end. For lettering, I have a much easier time with the Pentel Touch Sign pens. Happy Ever Crafter has a good Tombow Dual blending video though - that's how I learnt to do the gradient on the N.

thestral
|biro|

The coaches were no longer horseless. There were creatures standing between the carriage shafts. If he had had to give them a name, he supposed he would have called them horses, though there was something reptilian about them, too. They were completely fleshless, their black coats clinging to their skeletons, of which every bone was visible. Their heads were dragonish, and their pupil-less eyes white and staring. Wings sprouted from each wither – vast, black leathery wings that looked as though they ought to belong to giant bats. Standing still and quiet in the gathering gloom, the creatures looked eerie and sinister.

also also also I know of those Tombow dual brush pens!!! they're so nice when they behave but... I can never get them to behave. AND my orange one exploded smh. I agree that it turned out great regardless given the context and the luna-ness.

I'm all starry-eyed at that thestral, it's so beautiful, I don't know how you do it. I also think it was the perfect choice to use only biro for the precious death horse, it's such a stark effect (and I do always enjoy seeing great art in the simplest of mediums). ugh. I love it in here.

OH MY GOSH YOU'RE LEFT HANDED AND MAKING ALL THESE AMAZING THINGS WITH INK

been too long and just...WOW.

Can we talk about your lettering for a HOT SECOND though because oh my gosh I don't even know where to begin. I fantasize about being able to write like that but, alas, I can only make such beautiful lettering in photoshop...which is to say that I am letting the computer do it for me Just...really breath taking work

and I am so glad Ern used 'squiggles of joy' because I was wrecking my brain trying to remember what it had been and I could not for the life me me remember the phrasing so I am in AWE of your squiggles of joy and while they look amazing in black ink only (uh...that thestral?!?!!) the addition of color (that radish?!?!?!?!!) is also something really special.

I'm glad I waited to come in and comment because my eyes were just treated to such a splendid feast! A breakfast of champions. A big bowl of Wheaties, only actually scrummy. My favorite is easily the turnip.

P.S. You should open an etsy shop where I can buy those lovely lettering/prints.

Was playing conkers banned at your school too?! I think that piece is my favourite so far, and it means so much to me that it could evoke such strong memories for you too.

I think when they behave is about right! The colours are so pretty, and I've seen people do amazing things with them, but I really don't know how to get the best out of them. I've also since learned that the tips aren't so robust, especially for a left hander since we have to push the pen over the page rather than pull, and the fine tip is super important for the thick versus thin in hand lettering, so I don't know I'll be adding any more to my collection for a while. The the ink explosion wasn't too messy!

And thank you for your lovely comments on my thestral. My reaction when I finished it was 'glad that's over' so it was really lovely to come back to see everyone loving on it

I'd had the busiest few days with work, and had a pretty hard time with the thestral, so this means so much Suzy! Though lest you think I did it straight in pen...I always sketch it out in pencil first, and then remove the evidence of how out of proportion everything originally was

The big thing I learned about lettering is that it is NOT writing. At all. It's about basic strokes and forms that you combine together to make letters. And when you break it down like that, it's not quite so daunting...though figuring out how to get the pen at vaguely the right angle for the thick versus thins whilst seeing what I'm doing took some experimentation. The best advice I found as a left hander was that there's no right way, and to do what works for you - whether that be move the paper, your hand or both (I now hold the pen 'hooked' over the top, which is the opposite way to my normal handwriting).

And you spoil me with your words, Kath

Oh, Roro.... that Wheaties analogy cracked me up. I didn't eat cereal for years when I moved to the US, because it tasted so weird and gross compared to home - it's only recently I've started having it for breakfast again, and I think it only doesn't bother me now because it's been so long since I've been back.

Anywho, it's lovely to see you back here...I'm so glad you popped by! People have previously mentioned me starting an Etsy for my crochet too, but science keeps me way too busy. Hence why I'm now once again a week behind schedule on the prompts -__- I'm so flattered you'd buy my work though!

The wings were actually the first thing I drew...and then had to re-draw, because joining them on to the body was much easier said than done!

Shell Cottage
|biro|coloured pencil|

I was underwhelmed by Shell Cottage in the movies - it seemed too much emphasis on the shells, and not enough on the cottage. I always saw it with softer architecture, nestled amongst the sand, cosy and welcoming from the salty sea winds that can whip up the sand along the South England coast where I grew up.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons fans will immediately recognise the style I've opted to draw here. This cottage belongs to Sprinkle, an adorable turquoise penguin that lives by the beach on my island.

SPOILER!!: day 10 - Shell Cottage

I agree that the shell cottage from the movies isn't at all how I envisioned it, and I like your cute little cottage. It sort of reminds me of Hagrid's hut with that roof and rounded look.

I believe they did ban conkers, yes. so, so many banned games. and and and the ink explosion wasn't too bad at least, it was pretty contained other than going just all over my hands. and I can definitely see how the tombow pens would be especially tricksy for a left-hander, goodness

okay and. yes. animal crossing fan here, and I see it, and I love it (some of my faves live in houses in this style, with different detailing). I really like that you did your own take on it cause shell cottage was not what I expected in the films at all, I really expected something... well. less harsh, and more like a comfortable cottage, so... same.

your style is so pleasing to the eye, how you get the depth and colour into it, and the shading. I don't know how to explain it but the piece itself just looks so comfortable. the line work too I just. ugh. just love it.

also I stand by the precious death horse comment

Thanks, Suzy I just don't understand why they thought, why yes...lots of shells seems like the perfect building material. The shells could have been so much more of an actual feature pressed into a smooth plastered background. Sigh.

Agreed on both counts. I like to think this is a particularly well looked after precious death horse. Not completely bony and ragged.

This shape is kinda how I envisionaged Hagrid's hut too...but with more wooden supports on display, and a thatched roof.

Individually shaping and coloured those stones on the roof took a while. Longer than the rest of it put together. Your lovely comment makes definitely makes the attention to detail worth it though!

This is easily my favourite style of housing in the game, at least until November 5th. At one point I was only collecting villagers with this type house, but then Molly and Erik came along...and, well, they're too cute to turn away. And seems like consensus so far is that they did Shell Cottage dirty.

Comfortable is certainly a feeling I wanted to project, so this means so much. The depth comes from gradually building up the layers of colour, I think...using similar squiggles to that of the biro. I think there's three shades of blue, a violet and really pale green in the main colour of the walls.

Thinking about the study of magical creatures got me thinking about texts and the illustrations in medieval bestiaries (though it's worth noting that bestiaries were more about symbolism and teaching moral lessons than scientific study and knowledge of the natural world). Here's my take for an illustration on a page about the phoenix.

This quote appears to be attributed to Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), a Spanish surrealist painter. Surrealism aims to capture the subconscious mind, resulting in dream-like, bizarre and impossible scenes. The melting clock is synonymous with Surrealism and Dalí, appearing in Dalí's iconic work The Persistence of Memory.

SPOILER!!: day 12 - dreamy

and again...LETTERING...I am just in awe of that quote and not only is the letting just stunning...but then that DRAWING beside it. The melty clock is just...wow...it looks so rubbery and wibbly wobbly and I just want to flick it. But also...LETTERING. You do an amazing job at balancing fonts in size and then juuuuuuuuuuuust the right amount of bells and whistles and just...I am amazed

That phoenix is very cool! I like the style you used here.

And I agree with Kath, that lettering is beautiful. It's always so balanced and thought out, just like with your sketches. I am continuously blown away.

Now that you mention it, it does have moltres crossed with articuno vibes to it. Totally unplanned, but I'm not upset about it lol

I'm still not at all sure about all the bells and whistles, and there's a lot of trial and error when putting together a layout, but I'm glad to know my time and practice is paying off. I have another quote coming up that I'm pretty excited to do

Thanks, Ern. I realised partway through that I wanted to just use the outline and perhaps a hint of colour...and then had to try all my random pens (many of them at least a decade old...) to find any that remotely matched what I wanted. In the end the Sharpie and a completely unlabelled and quite battered red felt tip came through!

Oh, stop it, you.

sun colours
|coloured pencil|

So I know what this prompt was supposed to refer to, but my initial reaction was 'but sunlight is made up of all the colours' and followed my scientific instincts down that route. Just shows my Ravenclaw, I guess.

When light passes through a prism, it is bent, or refracted, as it gets slowed down by the denser medium. Each wavelength of light is refracted by a different amount - red the least, and violet the most - leading to a visible rainbow on the other side.

SPOILER!!: day 13 - sun colours

I know what this is, but broken brain said "RAINBOW CHEESE", so that is what it is now. Bless you, child, and your rainbow cheese.

That Phoenix is lovely <3 I love that you used markers for the lines. It makes them pop so well!

I love that you went with Salvador Dalí as a theme/quote for this prompt! He is one of my favorite artists. You drew that beautifully!

I love your thought process for sun colors. You are right though...the sun creates all colors! I love the prism and the use of light and dark to show how the prism is created.

Great job lovely

Aw, thank you :3 I'm happy with how it turned out, but it putting down all that black pigment was so messy!

It's been fun playing around with some different mediums and styles. Salvador Dalí is one of my favourite artists too, and surrealism just seemed so fitting for the prompt.

Getting the balance of the light and dark was pretty challenging...especially keeping the bright bit, well, bright when the black wanted to smudge everywhere. Luckily I have a very good eraser and could clean it all back up at the end!

dirigible plums
|biro|coloured pencil|

My parents had a Victoria plum tree in their garden when I was a child, and my mum makes the most amazing plum jam - it remains one of my favourite flavours to this day. Admittedly, fewer plums than should have made to the bubbling pan of preserve though, as they tasted best fresh and ripe off the tree after quick rinse under the nearby outdoor tap.

SPOILER!!: day 14 - dirigible plums
