Default Arcade Area

As you continue along the second-floor corridor, you will eventually stumble upon a bust of a medieval wizard who is quietly muttering to himself in Latin. But it is the antechamber near this statue that draws in a lot of students because over the years this spot has been designated as a popular hang-out area. More often than not, those who need a break from schoolwork come here to play an array of indoor wizarding games.

Scattered around this small room are chess boards, decks of Exploding Snap cards, areas for playing Gobstones, and other wizarding games ranging from Snitch Snatcher to Wizard Cracker Pop-It to Wizard Skittles. If none of these games interest you, there is a small table where Runok Ko and Rune Riddle books can be found. Otherwise, you can go check out the suit of armour that stands off to the side -- maybe you will figure out that it is guarding a passage to a secret storeroom -- or, if you feel there's more of the castle for you to explore, take the stairway that leads up to the third floor.

You know what? Dhruv had never quite gotten the grip of Latin, aside from the use of it in spellwork. For this reason, they didn’t understand a word the wizard was muttering. Or it could also be due to the fact that some of the words were unintelligible. It didn’t matter; it wasn’t as though the DADA professor was here to the ancient wizard. They were here to explore the arcade area. What they would like even more is being challenged by a student. Dhruv’s fingers were crossed {metaphorically} for this.

After a survey of the games there, they decided they were interested in practically every game there. Exploding Snap was possibly the one they played the most as a youth and even as an adult during slow days at the Ministry. Nevermind the countless singed eyebrows they had received. It had all been great fun.

As Phoenix took Latin as one of his extracurriculars, he always paused to greet the wizard bust in Latin on his way into the arcade area. He might have only been an enchanted statue, but the third year thought it was good practice, even if he didn't always quite catch the muttering. And it was, in a sense, polite.

Today was no different as he greeted the bust before entering, though he was slightly surprised to see the professor inside. Not that it was surprising that another person would visit the arcade area, but it was usually another student. "Hello, Professor," he greeted politely as he made his way towards the gobstones. "Did you need help finding something?" Perhaps he was lost or exploring, since he was new this term.

Dhruv turned a bit the moment he heard the greeting. “Hello, Mr. Marchbanks!” Marchbanks was his name, correct? They broke into a warm smile. “Nothing in particular at the moment. I was simply re-exploring Hogwarts. You know, reminiscing about my days here.” There had been challenges, there had been wonderful moments.

Dhruv held up a deck of Exploding Snap cards. “I played many a game with my dormmmates. There was some fierce competition.” In his opinion. They missed that group that comprised of Grayson, Zachael, Ezekiel and the others. But enough about all of that! “Are you meeting anyone here? If you wouldn’t be too occupied, would you fancy a game of something? Anything you choose!”

Phoenix still found it weird that most of the professors addressed students by mister or miss whatever their last name was. It always felt so formal and impersonal to him, like stuffy colleagues at a business meeting. But he also thought it would be rude and pointless to ever say as much so he simply accepted it. Maybe it would be a good topic for him to bring up for the next Debate Club meeting.

He nodded slightly as the professor mentioned his own student days. "Is it all the same when you were here or have some things changed?" He imagined some things must have changed as it had probably been a while since he was a student, but maybe not. Phoenix didn't have any real reason to think that they just changed things around every few years or so. There wasn't all that much different since he had started himself a couple years ago, besides a new professor or two every year so far.

Phoenix glanced up at the pack of cards the professor held in his hands. "Oh, no, I was just coming in for some practice. I wasn't really meeting anyone." And he was willing to play with whomever was in here. Sometimes he found a willing partner. "Sure, we could play something. I was going to practice gobstones, but we could play exploding snap, if you'd rather." Phoenix was pretty decent with both of those and it could be interesting to see just how good of a competitor the professor was. Or maybe he could even teach Phoenix a thing or do.

Dhruv found it weird too. They had actually debated about calling the Hogwartians by their first name or by ‘Master/Miss’ plus their surname. In the end, the latter won but they’d still be willing to make the switch to the former should a student ask. Though not their first time teaching, their University students, naturally, had been older and Dhruv hadn’t referred to them by any titles {expect perhaps when the man got exasperated over a piece of homework}.

“Oh, a few things have changed but it’s all for the better.” Many things were still old fashioned around here but well, that was just Hogwarts’ heritage, was it not? Dhruv snapped out of the moment of deep reminiscing. There would be plenty of time for that later! “It’s been a while since I’ve played that, and I can’t think of a better time to take a refresher course.” Their attention went to the marble-like objects. “There are a few variations of the game, I believe. Which is the easiest?” The beginner’s lever if you will, please, Phoenix.
