Default Joint Lesson: Flying + Potions

The weather is brisk as you head down to the pitch, autumn firmly taking hold with the leaves on the trees starting to turn coppery hues. The sky might be clear and the sun out, but there’s definitely still a chill in the air. At least the dew on the grass present when you arrived for this morning’s SORE exercises has cleared, so there’d be no need for soggy bottoms when you eventually sit down.

Under the hoops at one end of the pitch stand Professors Baldvinsson and Noble, chatting about the latest Quidditch results. Lines of mason jars containing bluebell flames radiate out from them, forming several concentric semi-circles. “Find yourself a jar,” Noble instructs, “And put your cauldron on it ready.” They had remembered their cauldrons, yes?

She nodded her head in understanding, point her wand at the area and say glacius, it seemed simple but she was just a little shotty on her wand work. Sometimes even the simplest of spells she struggled with. All wrapped up Kaitlynn beamed and after the older girl cast the spell she could feel the cool air, but it wasn't too much of an uncomfortable cold. "Pretty good. I'd be in good standing, I think, if I got hurt and you helped me."

It was her turn now wasn't it...to wrap up a body part and use the spell. "Why don't I wrap your knee as well?" She grabbed the extra bandage that wasn't being used. "I think I know what to do now." She obviously hadn't accounted for the fact that it was stretchy. First though...the spell.

She pulled out her wand and pointed it at a grassy area away from the two of them. "Glacius." Nothing. Taking a deeeeeeep breath she tried again a little less uncertainty in her voice. "Glacius." And there it was the blue light at the tip of her wand and an icy patch on the ground. "Cool."
Juni smiled, really though she still wasn’t sure what she wanted to do yet. ”You have plenty of time to decide.” Wasn’t she like a second or third year? ”Thanks. I kind of want to do to cursebreaking too. Or maybe teaching. She had plenty of time to figure all of of that out. Juni did too. She knew she would figure it out where the time came. Right now she was just trying to enjoy her sixth year. At least she didn’t have to worry about OWLs this year with all of these new rules and changes.

Now that Juni had tended to the other girls fake knee injury it was her turn to get wrapped up. She hoped that she had explained it well enough for the other girl to understand. She nodded when she asked about wrapping her knee too. May as well. It was probably one of the easiest body parts to wrap. Juniper stood up after her knee had been wrapped up. ”That’s a great job wrapping my knee.” See it was so much easier to wrap someone else up.

”That’s it! Good job!” She did teach the other girl to do a spell. She was proud of her and herself for that. The sixth year give the younger girl a encouraging smile.

It was time to remove the bandages. She unwrapped her knee and rolled the ace bandage back up in and sit it off to the side out of the way. Listening as Professor B explained in more detail about what to do after the RICE to regain the strength back in the affected area.

What potion would they be working on, noticing that the flying professor was closing out his part of the lesson. Sadly but she was getting a bit more comfortable with her potions. Which was something she was going to have to work harder at if she wanted to be a healer. She was working on it.

With that being said, Juniper started writing down her potions notes. She listened carefully to everything that the potions master was saying. Oh so they were making a bruise paste. That might be good for her after practices and matches. She wouldn’t have to visit the healer as often if she had her own bruise paste. Yes that would be handy.

Just on the off chance that her cauldron hadn’t warmed up she put her hand just above the top of the cauldron. Seemed warm to her. So she was all good to go. First she added a cup of water, and the well packed half cup of arnica root. She sit there for three minutes as it seeped, after the three minutes were up she added the petal of the three dandelions.

She smiled at Juni after it was all said and done. "Thanks for your help." She was grateful for the older Ravenclaw. She wasn't sure what she would have done if she had failed to do something so simple. She unwrapped her own knee and rewrapped the bandage in the roll that she had initially received it in. "I really appreciate it and I hope you get to do whatever makes you happiest." The RICE lesson all wrapped up they moved onto the potions part. She gave the girl one last smile and shifted to stand in front of her cauldron.

Potions she could handle a lot better than wand work honestly. She took notes and nodded to herself as she wrote. This would come in handy because she was prone to being part of team mysterious bruise. It didn't seem to matter if she sat in one spot on the couch all day or not. She'd go to bed wondering where the bruise on her arm came from.

One cup of water. Half a cup of arnica root. Three dandelions worth of loose petals. Simple enough.

She held her hand to she side of her cauldron without touching it and felt a small bit of heat coming off of it so she was fairly certain it had warmed up enough. She packed the half a cup of arnica root real quick so that after she poured her water she wouldn't spend the extra time packing it. Slowly she added her cup of water then dumped the arnica root right in.

She had three free minutes to just stare at her watch and her cauldron. Three minutes that seemed to tick kinda slow but at the same time went by really fast. Afraid that if she blinked her eyes should would miss it but feeling impatient waiting for that second hand to tick all the way around three times. Times up!

She held out the petals of the dandelions over the cauldron and watched as they fell down into it.

Default Steeping... mention of Zac and Max again
Sardines ♥ BHB ♥ Dallie ♥ Grumpy ♥ MY SUN AND STARS ♥ i love julia

Okay, well, Natalie had really, honestly, been eavesdropping on Zac and Max's conversation because she just, like, didn't want to be totally alone on that assignment. She didn't expect Maxton to get... upset. She was teasing him! Didn't he know? Natalie looked at Zac with a sheepish expression, right as the Groundskeeper picked up the lesson again and moved them onto the next bit, which Professor Noble picked up.

The potions part. She was probably going to be better at this. Natalie perked up at the mention of bruise paste, which was what she had mentioned at the beginning of class. After returning her bandage to the bin, Natalie went to a cauldron and followed instructions. It was amusing to her that his arm was still floating.

Okay, water, then arnica root, packed.

Natalie carefully poured the cup of water into the cauldron and then carefully packed half a cup of the root into a measuring cup before dumping it in with the water. Now to steep it and wait...

It was a relief to know that Madison hadn't done a bad job of treating Hanna, and Professor Noble must have agreed because he hadn't said anything to them about it. A smile was sent to her friend, and she was about to comment that she would trust her with any injuries as well, when Professor Baldvinsson started talking.

Right, they were moving along with the lesson.

As she removed her bandage, rolling it up carefully, she listened to everything the man had to say. Some of it she knew from common sense and experience, but it was still good to make note of things. What she was REALLY curious about was the more magical aspect - something that the potions professor was getting into now.

Bruise paste. Now THAT was sure to come in handy over the years, especially with all the craziness that she and her sister got up to.

After making sure that her measuring cup was clean, she filled it with a cup of water using her wand. This was poured into her cauldron and followed by a half cup of arnica root. Madison made sure that it was definitely WELL PACKED before adding it in. That done, she needed to wait for three minutes, which actually wasn't too bad for potions brewing; some potions had her waiting FOREVER between steps, and they were so unbelievably tedious. It was the WORST. But these three minutes seemed to fly by and she was not complaining about that.

In went the loose petals of three dandelions.

What next?

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

Zac wasn't sure what had been said that made the nerd prefect was upset. He noticed the older boy's flushed skin, Zac wanted to roll his eyes - because WHY? Everyone had different interests. It was okay.

Nonetheless, when he was done wrapping him up, he gave Maxton a pat on the back, just like he had in the beginning and added, "good job"

Moving on.

It was time for the Potions bit of the lesson, and surprisingly Zac still wasn't bored. Something was probably in the air. After listening to the instructions, the boy kept his bandages away, before making his way back to his cauldron, which was fortunately next to Natalie. Because he had pretty much forgotten the order in which the things were suppose to go into his cauldron.

So following her, he poured the cup of water in his cauldron, before adding in the well-packed half cup of arnica root. There. Looking into the cauldron, he watched as the root began to seep into the water. "We add dandelions next, yeah?" he asked, the brunette besides him - since that was the only ingredient left out of the three the professor had mentioned.

....Three or maybe four minutes in, Zac noticed the other kids adding in the petals to the mixtures, so he went ahead and did it too.

Max was just glad that the group work was over for the time being. And glad that he was able to get the bandage off of his leg because it had started to get uncomfortable.

He always felt a bit conflicted when it came to Potions. He enjoyed it.... he just wasn't great it at and more often than not something with his mixture went wrong. It didn't help that Professor Noble made him nervous.

He was determined to get it right this time though, and the first set of instructions were too straight forward to screw up surely. Max added the cup of water and half cup of arnica root. And while that was busy doing its thing, he gave his calf a little rub to try and get the blood flow back again. Zac's bandaging skills had been a tad too good.

He checked his watch, and when it had been roughly three minutes he added exactly three dandelion petals to his cauldron.

There. So far so good.

Hanna turned to Maddie with a grin as well. They hadn't been corrected so... hopefully they had done it correctly. She started to undo her bandage, and then spend a few extra moments making sure the bandage was perfectly wrapped up, and secured it in the packaging, after scourgifying the contents.

Turning her attention to Professor Noble as he started speaking about what they were doing, she found herself impressed about a bruise paste. That would be pretty handy!

With her own cauldron nice and warm, near Maddie's, Hanna got to the potion. She got her measuring cup out, "Scourgify," was cast at it, to get rid of any debris. "Aguamenti," she cast, until she had her cup full. She added it to the cauldron. Next she pulled out her half cup measure, and from her potion-making kit she extracted the arnica root. She measured, and packed, the half cup, before adding that to her cauldron. Putting her little timer on for three minutes to allow it to steep, she pulled out three dandelions, and pulled off the petals gently so as not to bruise them. She put them aside waiting for her three minutes to go by, and then added the petals to the cauldron.

"So first you would rest it, right? Then ice it?" Rylee glanced up at him for reassurance. "I cast Glacius, right?" This she knew how to do already having used the charm many times to cool down the wax when making her flower crowns. "I'll be careful, don't worry." Pulling out her wand she cast 'Glacius near his left arm so as not to cause any harm to his skin. "Not to cold?"

"Now compression." Using an ace bandage she gently but firmly went ahead to wrap Derf's left arm. When she was all done she look at him. "How does that feel? Is it to tight?" She smiled softly. "Lastly you should keep that elevated." She grinned up at him. How did she do?
Chuckling a bit as he settled into a better position for her to handle his 'injury', Derf hammed up the performance for his own amusement mostly. "Was testing out my new pads and such. Got cocky thinking they could handle the blunt impact." Or so the story he was making up on the spot went at least. Derf wasn't particularly worried about Rylee's abilities. She did always seem to be ahead of the curve even as a first year. "Nope, this feels great," he nodded as he flexed his muscles a bit just to check how her wrapping and ice work had managed. "Outstanding work, Rylee. Reckon I'll be pounding bludgers again in no time."

And maybe...he should have been a bit more aware of just how much time their role playing was taking...because just has he had begun to undo the wrappings Rylee had administered in favor of him having a go at things - though he really did not NEED it, per say - Professor Noble was addressing everyone and giving some brewing instructions...which meant he needed to go aaaaaaall the way back to the front where his cauldron was.

Quickly removing the bandages and rolling it up neatly to be returned, Derf thanked his Gryffindor companion and then scampered back over to his station to grab his textbook to flip through it for the recipe since, er, he hadn't been able to write ANY of that down while being away from his things. Finding the correct page, Derf took a moment to read over the entire brewing instructions before following the first few steps. All the while making nervous glances towards Professor Noble because...yikes. Using Aguamenti for the water, he caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarefully measured out one cup and poured it in before setting his attention to the arnica root.

Well packed...what exactly did that mean.

He reckoned, given his close proximity, that if he were WRONG...he would hear about it. So he soon began measuring all that out, using his fingers to press the root down into the measuring cup and squishing things a little. That was what one did when really packing a suitcase anyway. Well, one without an extension charm on it. Pour, tap tap, squish, pour some more...and soon Derf had a VERY well packed cup of arnica root. So much so that he had to tap it a bit firmly against the side of his cauldron to get it to fall out and into the water with a gently kerplunk.

And now to wait for those three minutes to pass...which meant he was sitting there with those dandelion petals on a small dish WAITING for the time to pass and, well, for whatever commentary the Potions Master was going to offer him.

Hopefully it would be....good? He felt ANXIOUS not standing next to Abey for all this...even if it was maybe, for the best, that they were not for one reason or another. And, well, the individual attention for a subject he severely struggled in was honestly....nice. And he NEEDED to improve in this if he had a chance in Hades at a successful career in magizoology healing.

Zoryn and young Lucas were quite the dramatic team. ”A little less acting, a little more healing.” He noted when he passed them just in time to spot Anna casting a levitation charm on Patrick. His brow furrowed. Anna Meriwether.” Yup. He was using her full name to reeeally show how much he disliked what he just saw. ”You only needed to practice the ice and the compression. Not the elevation part. Two points from Gryffindor for not following instructions and for disregarding Professor Noble’s instruction to inform and warn before you’re casting a levitation charm.” Now, he didn’t WANT to deduct points but he was sure she could earn them back. Eventually. Still carefree and blissfully ignorant of his colleague still wrapped up in the sling, he continued to walk around among the students, careful not to accidently knock one of the cauldrons over. It seemed like most of them were getting the hang of it already. ”Very good everyone, make sure it’s not too tight.” He glanced over at Max’s leg as he passed by. Maybe it was looking a little too snug for comfort there, Zachary. It was definitely time to move on.

”Time to remove the bandages.” Haraldur announced as he made it in front of the class again. ”Please roll up the used bandages as neatly as possible and put them aside.” Now would be your time to do so. ”Once you’ve rested and reduced swelling with ice, compression and elevation, you remove your bandages and start to work towards regaining full mobility and strength. Many of you mentioned stretching as a way to speed up recovery after an injury, which is very important indeed.” Haraldur clasped his hands over his stomach as he continued. ”Normally when we’re talking about rehabilitating exercises, it consists of; range-of-motion exercises, stretching, strengthening exercises and balance and control exercises. Of course, every situation is different and some of these rehabilitation exercises can actually delay recovery rather than speed it up so you should always consult with a Healer if you're unsure.” He nodded towards the mason jars and the cauldrons, which as of yet hadn’t been used. ”However, there are also magical ways to deal with minor injuries. Something Professor Noble will walk you through.”

Professor Noble who was still tied up that was.

So hopefully they were all paying attention and could figure it out themselves. If not, they'd likely find themselves starting over before too long. “Off you go!”

He turned to Haraldur now, looking down at his arm expectantly. “If you wouldn’t mind…”

Patrick let Anna finally wrap his leg but he was unprepared for her levitating his leg and fell promptly to his butt. "Hey easy on the up in the air thing. Can I get my leg back now?" He was watching as she got points taken, "Well good that I can have my leg back but stinks you lost a few points for a laugh." he muttered under his breath at Anna.

Turning his attention back toward the professors he heard he should be stretching. Now though he needed to get his potion going. He was enjoying all of these classes with the old professors. Most of them cared deeply about the students unlike his other courses with the cold professionals from the board.

"You have a cauldron near by?"
he asked Anna as he began to add a cup of water to his cauldron as well as the arnica root. He pressed the arnica root into the measuring tool one more time before adding it to the cauldron. Now he had three minutes to wait. What was he supposed to do for three minutes before he had to add those dang dandelion petals.

Ummmm.... Had it been three minutes yet? Natalie had zoned out a bit there and lost track of time. But she had put the root in around the same time as a student near her and they were adding the dandelion petals in now.

... Sure. It had probably been three minutes. So Natalie grabbed the dandelions and plucked the petals off of all three of them before dumping them into the cauldron. Well, nothing had exploded yet, so she was probably safe.

Natasha made her way back to her cauldron. She almost forgot which one was hers for a minute. She took care to make sure she had the right cauldron before she began. Taking out her potions kit from her bag, she slyly pulled out a bottle of water. She hadn't mastered the spell yet and didn't want to end up soaking a classmate.

She added the water and arnica root. While waiting for the time to pass, she prepared the dandelion petals. When the three minutes ended, she added them to her cauldron as well. Nothing terrible had happened....but was it the right colour? Was it supposed to smell like that? She knew these things were very important, but they hadn't been told what a correctly brewered potion would look like. She tried to glance over at the Professor's cauldron, but she couldn't see the contents from where she was. All she could do was wait, and not panic.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh...

AaAH.

Abra gave a sudden jolt of surprise as Professor Noble spoke to him from over his shoulder. Heart hammering wildly, he opened and closed his mouth for a moment as though he were about to say something until, having realised the words weren't coming, he slammed it shut and settled for nodding his head. Loosen it up and try again, got it.

He unravelled the bandage, and then re-wrapped his arm, doing his best not to pull it quite so tight. It was actually surprisingly difficult; on his second try, he realised very quickly he wasn't wrapping the bandage tight enough to offer any compression, which called for starting again a third time. That seemed to do the trick, more or less. It was rough and messy but his arm felt duly compressed and his fingers didn't feel like they were about to fall off, so Abra considered that a success... and just in time for class to move on. To... Professor Noble's section.

With a glum expression on his face, Abra unravelled his bandage once more and rolled it up as neatly as he could and as quickly as possible; he didn't want to lag behind in the Potions portion of class, because rushing and panicking only made him mess up even more. Every time, actually.

Once the bandage was set aside, Abra turned his attention to his cauldron... at which point he realised that he was in... a very unfortunate situation. Verbal instructions. No demonstration. Combined, those approaches made life/school/potions very difficult for Abra; his brain was not very good at storing verbal instructions and already he was mixing up what he had been told to do. Was it half a cup of water and a cup of arnica root, or the other way around? How long did it need to seep for again? Did he say dandelions or daisies?

Already, Abra was becoming flustered, and when he became flustered, he ceased to think straight. His breathing sped up and his heart rate along with it, and he clenched his hands into fists while he looked wildly around at everyone else to see what it was they were doing.

One person nearby was adding a cup - it was definitely one full cup - of water to their cauldron, so Abra quickly did that, using Aguamenti and all, before looking around at the others again. But he really was stuck at this point, because now he couldn't remember what order the other instructions had been in, so he couldn't be sure of who to copy.

Except for Derf. Abra laid eyes on his Hufflepuff and immediately saw that he had his textbook out, and it occurred to him that he could do the same and look at the instructions... though reading them out of a book was likely to be almost as difficult as remembering something he had been told to do. It was better than nothing, except for the fact that they hadn't been told to get their books out, and, what with the strictness of certain new professors in the school, Abra was basically terrified of doing something he had not been explicitly told he could do...

... so he raised his hand, very hesitantly, cleared his throat lightly, and addressed the Potions Master. "Uhhh... Professor Noble?" Breathebreathebreathe. "Is it okay if I... if I follow the instructions from my, uhh... my textbook?" He might also have gone a little red in the face as he spoke; he was essentially admitting out loud in front of everyone that he couldn't even follow a few simple spoken instructions without getting confused, and could only really hope that Noble didn't ask him to explain why he couldn't just remember what was said.

“Of course, Lukey,” she smiled, playing along. “Anything for you. I’ll sign something for you after this appointment.” She’d actually do it too. It’d be good practice for when she actually has to sign them ALL the time. Being a famous Quidditch STAR and ACTRESS would mean having to sign autographs for plebeians ALL the time. If she didn’t get enough practice, her hands would cramp!! Y’know?

Anyways, that’d have to wait for after class because unfortunately they had to swap roles now.

When she said patch of grass, she really meant for him to try the spell… Buuuuuuut, this worked too. “Oh no! Not YOUR KNEE,” she gasped, dropping down to the ground, putting a hand on his shoulder and assessing the situation. “Lukey, it’s gonna be alright! I know how to fix this!!”

RICE.

“It’s all a part of the process, Professor!” Zoryn called back to Coach B, who clearly didn’t appreciate their dramatics as much as he should have. Not everyone appreciated talent it seemed.

Was Professor Noble SEEING this? They were FANTASTIC! “Okay, this might hurt just a bit, but you’ve gotta stay strong, okay?” Technically icing came first, but she had already done the spell once so was there really a need to do it again? Probably not. So instead, she began wrapping up his knee, pretty nicely if she did say so herself.

Before she could say anything about it, however, Professor Nobel happened. Zoryn gave Lucas an apologetic look because really, he did do a nice job. The bow added PIZZAZ.

…. FIVE POINTS???

-_________________-

“He’s such a jerk,” she rolled her eyes as he walked away and whispered when she thought he was out of earshot. “Congratulations, though Lukey! Losing points is the official Gryffindor initiation. You’re officially part of the COOL kids club!!!” SHE BEAMED AT HIM. It wasn’t entirely accurate, but she didn’t want him to feel all bad about it. He seemed like the type. And Zoryn quite liked him. Plus, Professor Noble was stupid. Lucas was just trying to get ahead of the curve here, practicing what he’d have to do in real life. As far as Zoryn was concerned, he ought to receive 5 points.

Once they were told to remove the bandages, Zoryn helped Lucas with his before working at her own.

Lucas didn't really know if she was ACTUALLY going to sign something for him but the promise was still nice and he liked it and did want one secretly inside. So he gave her a smile, as if to say thank you. And there was an even bigger smile when she played along with his broken knee and said she was going to fix it. He didn't really know a lot about her - except that she knew this Alice Odessa person - but he was SURE that she would do a much better job on his knee than he had done on her arm.

A little less acting and a little more healing? WELL. He had to agree with Zoryn here, which was why he was nodding a lot when she spoke. They were still doing the task, right? They weren't doing anything BAD. Look, Zoryn was even putting a bandage around his knee and it looked MUCH better already. "You're a natural at this!" And yes, he could be strong. Not as strong as some of the older kids he bet but he was still stro-

........

.................

Oh. Uh........

Lucas blinked a couple of times when Noble started talking. He'd...... done it wrong? Biting his lip, he looked down at the bandage on Zoryn's arm. It didn't LOOK wrong. It was still covering her fake wound, wasn't it? And Zoryn is a gift, he was very sure about it. He didn't have any proof but he knew and that had to be enough.

And then things took a turn for the worse when he..... got points taken off? He looked down at the grass as an uncomfortable feeling started to settle in and he tried hard not to squirm where he sat. There was....... no way he could save himself from that one. And worst of all, it was done in front of Zoryn, who was probably going to think he was dumb for not listening to instructions properly and and......

........ this was an initiation?

He looked up at her and gave her a small smile. She was trying and he could tell because this sounded like something you'd say to a little kid when you're trying not to make them cry. And he wasn't going to cry. He was STRONG, remember? "Thanks, Zoryn! Guess that makes me one of the cool kids who ties bows on bandages and you're a cool gift." He could...... make a joke about this, right? Make it easier to swallow.

When she had taken off his bandages, Lucas got up to his feet again. "Thanks! And, uh, sorry. For.... you know, the points." And everything. "Thanks for being my partner. You're the coolest." He gave her a smile before going back to his cauldron to work on the next part. He...... kind of wanted to keep acting with Zoryn but they were moving on with the lesson so he'd have to as well.

He sat down by his cauldron again and tried to pay attention to the instructions being given but..... there was a lot. Or maybe it felt that way right now. There was only one thing for it: split up the instructions. First, he had to add a cup of water, which was easy enough. He filled up the cup of water and poured it into the cauldron. Next, half a cup of arnica root which, uh, looked weird. And he didn't know if it was well-packed or not but it didn't look like it was loose (?) so he decided to trust it. That went into the cauldron as well.

Now. Seep for three minutes? Easy.

Lucas looked down at his watch and then sat back. Three minutes, this didn't sound so bad. He sat there, taking some deep breaths and trying not to think about anything that could upset him. But it was hard because the more he tried NOT to think about it, the more he ended up thinking about it. And before he knew it, he was staring off into space, lost in his own thoughts.....

........

Oh. Were the three minutes up?

Turns out that the answer was no.

He waited out the last few seconds before adding loose petals of three dandelions into the cauldron. These instructions were really specific, weren't they? LOOSE petals. THREE dandelions. What would happen if he only added two? Or two and a half? He didn't really want to ask Noble but he really wanted to know as well.

Trinetta nodded at Noble's instructions on Glacius, but before she had a chance to put it in to play, they had already moved on. Which was good, because Nettie was much more looking forward to the potion brewing part of the lesson as opposed to the healing part. She was NOT looking to follow in her parent's footsteps when it came to healing, thank you very much.

She listened to the instructions and took notes, since there wasn't a whiteboard this time around to consult, and then looked at her cauldron. She pulled out her wand and waved it, muttering "Scourgify" over it as she usually did to prep it for her potion. Next..."Aguamenti," she said, waving her wand and filling the cauldron and measuring out a cup of water. Next, her cup of arnica root. She packed it in neatly to her measuring cup so she had a half a cup, then added that to her potion as well.

Now to let it seep for 3 minutes. She consulted her watch, since she didn't have a clock on the wall to look at, and waited. And waited. And waited. After what felt like an HOUR she finally had timed out 3 minutes, then took her loose dandelion petals and dropped them into the cauldron.

Potions and Flying… What a combo, right? Two of his worst subjects put together… He imagined having to try to brew a potion where you had to swoop in on your broom for each ingredient. That sounded way too dangerous for either professor to even consider, but man did the thought make Jackson anxious. He picked up a broom from the shed and gathered with his classmates. “Good morning, Professor Noble. Good morning, Professor Baldvinsson.” He could feel a bit of adrenaline rushing at him, and he realized that it was because he was now more used to coming out here for morning runs than he was for class. Not that he didn’t already get anxious when he had to fly, since he wasn’t very good at it. Finally class was ready to begin, and Jackson stifled a yawn. He meant no offense, Professors! When SORE was mentioned, Jackson had to hold back a chuckle. It was no wonder that most professors had still not come around to the activity. It didn’t really bother Jackson, if he was being honest. He sat, nodding slightly as the dangers of flying were mentioned. Jackson flying was in fact a danger. CAUTION.

Home remedies? Hearing the last instruction caused Jackson to make a slightly shocked face. Just… different. He stopped himself, as he had been about to speak, and raised his hand instead. “I used to play a lot of uh, well, Muggle sports, so I have a lot of experience with injuries. I’ve had a concussion, which is basically bruising your brain, and to treat that… well, my mum told me to just stay awake and practice logic puzzles. When I tore my ham string, I did a lot of exercises in the water to increase my endurance and whatnot. I’ve also used a lot of pain medicine, Neosporin…” Did those count as home remedies? He nodded as he listened to some of the other things that were said. Yea, he did some of those but he had never thought of it as a remedy. Can you imagine being such a small kid and having a Healer just patch you right up?! Rest, ice, compression, elevation… Yea, he remembered hearing those before…maybe. Wait, haha… Professor Noble was being the volunteer? Hm… hehe. You go, Sir.

Then it was time to either partner up or work on your own. Jackson was able to make a brace for himself easily enough, but he had to remind himself not to cast Glacius directly on his person. HE’D LIKE TO KEEP THAT LIGAMENT THANKS. He tried different levels of “snugness” to make sure that he was compressing correctly until finally he was satisfied. He looked around to offer help to those nearby that were either used to magic remedies or who may not have gotten hurt as much as he did growing up. BATTLE SCARS! As he looked around it looked like most that wanted any help had already been looking for a partner… Oops. Maybe he should have done that first? When it was time to move on, Jackson did his best to get the bandages off nicely. They weren’t terrible, but they were a bit messier than his aunt would ever allow at home. As Professor Noble introduced his side of the lesson, Jackson could finally make sense of what the potion would probably be for. Would they ever be made to attempt Skele-Gro??? Jackson didn’t think he had the skills to literally grow someone’s bones back. He definitely agreed that they should all know basics of first aid. Bruise paste… well, that was definitely new ground for him. Time for notes!

He put his hand a bit over his cauldron to make sure it felt warm enough, and he was pretty confident. As the Professor instructed them, Jackson was quickly scribbling down notes so as not to forget. He added the cup of water and a… half cup of arnica root. Jackson packed his cup halfway, but packed it as tight as he could. Hey, he said “well-packed” right? …Right…? He added to the potion and started his timer. He played with the dandelions a little, spinning one in his hand while he waited.

a bit of madness is key | miss chanandler bong | those cunning folks use any means

As the students began rolling up their bandages, Haraldur took a step back to let Noble continue with the potion they were brewing. That is, Noble would have continued with if he had both his arms free.

... Whoops?

The flying instructor might have forgotten him completely and no student had offered to help their Professor out? Amused, Haraldur ended the levitation charm and proceeded to help with the bandaging. Did he mind though? Well. It would have been funnier to leave him hanging. With LOVE of course. "There you go. Free as a bird." He took a step back, dropped the sling to the ground and began to roll up the bandages.

As he did, he took a casual stroll around to watch over the students' shoulders. Not that he could offer them much guidance. Potions had never been one of his strong subjects. Seeing as how the bruising paste was a relatively easy potion, they didn't seem to need much guidance after all. He walked by Jessa and Juniper who were both quick to follow instructions. Unsure on how much he could disturb the students by chatting about well, anything flying-related he kept quiet after noticing how focused Kaitlynn was on getting the timing exactly right. Maybe he shouldn't say anything. Jackson had completed the RICE exercise as well and began taking notes of the instructions after removing the bandages so he brushed past him towards Natalie and Madison who were already putting in their petals after the 3 minutes. "It helps to stand and walk around, Max." He noted as the Slytherin Prefect worked to get some normal blood flow back in his leg. "Wiggle your foot a little, it'll feel better." His partner for the RICE exercise, Zachary was also moving forward, following the instructions from Noble along with Patrick and Lucas who had left the dramatics and Zoryn to start brewing. It wasn't a major surprise to see how much Derf and Abra hated not working next to each other but the boys were both always flying around, looking fairly confident in flying class so it was still a little unusual to hear the nervousness in Abra's voice when he asked Noble if he could use the book. Was it because Noble usually had discipline in his class and Haraldur had anarchy? Was it because Haraldur kind of allowed his students to do almost anything in class and stay a while after with complete freedom? Maybe. Either way, the flying instructor couldn't decide if it was allowed or not to check the book, the question was directed at Noble. "A little water and then arnica root, my boy." He murmured to you know help the kid out because he was h e l p f u l. OK. So maybe Haraldur hadn't completely listened to Noble's instructions either but how precise did they have to be? What was the worst that could happen? Really?

And with those words of wisdom, Haraldur passed Hanna and Trinetta and raised an eyebrow at the girls. They had both used Scourgify before adding the water. Smart, smart, smart. "Mmmhm." He just nodded along at them. He would never have thought of to use it before starting but then again, it was a looong time since he'd brewed anything other than a good cup of tea.

Once he was done helping everyone who was clearly in need of help, the flying instructor took a few steps back to allow Noble to continue. He also wondered if he could just sit down to rest his knee or if the new Headmaster would hear about it and come knocking on his Hut door. He'd rather push through the pain for a little longer. Besides, how could he help to clarify the next set of instructions if he was sitting down? Helpful.

Stuck inside with Sirius | *Splish-Splash* | bamBAM | ☁ Spooktacular ☁

There was a disgruntled look on the Potions Professor’s face as his friend finally released him from the sling. “About time,” he murmured quietly, flexing his arm a little before flicking his wand from the holster. “You better watch your back, old man.” There was a smirk on his lips, as he turned back to his cauldron and measured the cup of water and half cup of arnica root into it.

Having set his timer for three minutes, he glanced across the semicircle of make-shift workstations. The first to catch his eye was Jessa, who was getting on quietly and competently as usual. Nearby, however, there were still the tail end of some dramatics going on with Zoryn and Lucas. Noble grumbled, but left them be for the moment as Lucas settled into his potions work. Really, though, the older Gryffindor was lucky Noble hadn’t heard that comment under her breath.

His gaze now moved to Juniper and Kaitlyn, who both seemed to have things well under control. Not that adding some water and two ingredients was all that difficult, but this was Hogwarts, and he never knew what to expect. He was quietly impressed by the pair carefully testing whether their cauldrons were warm.

Nearby, it seemed like Zachary was just about keeping up by copying Natalie. Probably not person he would have chose to copy, but it could have been worse, he supposed. The Slytherin needed to keep up though, or he might find himself starting over on his own. His partner for the previous activity, Max, seemed to be lacking a key piece of key though. “Use your timer next time, Maxton,” Noble warned. It was part of his kit for a reason. And actually…had Natalie set hers? “You too, Natalie. I said three minutes. Not roughly three minutes.” Did it matter? Well…only time would tell.

His own timer now going off, Noble plucked the petals from the three dandelions as sprinkled them in his cauldron. A slight smile appeared in the corner of his lip as his saw Hanna scourgify her cauldron before getting started. Precise work indeed. Madison was already looking ready and raring to go with the next part. All in good time, of course. This potion was one where a pause didn’t hurt too much.

Good job too, since Derf hadn’t added his dandelion yet. Noble peered inside his cauldron, not giving very much away at all. Perhaps it was his close friend that saved him from a scathing comment, as it was right then he asked the question. “You may supplement my demonstration with the text, yes, Abraham,” Noble said with a frown. It was curious that the boy felt the need to ask to use his textbook of all things. “Although perhaps you might like to come use the jar here, if you can’t keep up from over there.” He pointed to a free jar right at the front of the class, on the opposite side of the semicircle to Derfael.

A final glance round told him Trinetta and Natasha were ready to move on, and he took that as his cue. Patrick and Jackson would just have to catch up if they were still waiting on seeping to happen.

“Right then!” He raised his voice to regain their attention. “Next we’re going to add three level tablespoons of dried comfrey leaves and stir three times clockwise. At this point, the potion should turn a faint lilac.” Now able to demonstrate, he took full advantage, showing the students how to properly level the level of the dried leaves using their knife. “We’ll follow that up with five white willow leaves. Crush them lightly between your fingers and drop in the potion one at a time, stirring anticlockwise between each.”

Were they still following? He hoped so.

“Finally add a one inch piece of willow bark, and simmer until it turns into a thick yellow paste. That should take eight minutes.” A glance at his watch showed that had about 15 minutes remaining – in theory, plenty of time to get finished up and packed away. "When you think you're done, put a sample in a vial and bring it to the front. The rest you can do with as you wish."

Clean cauldron, check. 1 c. Water, check. Petals of 3 dandelion heads, check. Now Bettie needs 3 Tbsp of dried comfrey leaves (leveled), done. Then she stirred the potion 3 times clockwise and watched it turn a faint lilac.
The Bettie crushed 5 willow leaves between her fingers and dropped then into her potion one leaf at a time stirring anticlockwise between each one. Then she added the 1” piece of willow bark and simmered it until it became a yellow thick paste.
When Bettie was done brewing her potion/Simple Bruise Paste she put it in a few of vials. The first vial she wrote:
Simple Bruise Paste
Name: Bettie Blackwell
House: Slytherin
Year: 1st

Then she took it up front and the others she just wrote Simple Bruise Paste and put them away for herself. Then she cleaned up.

They were moving on. Awesome.

Madison cleaned her measuring spoon with Scourgify before measuring out a tablespoon of dried comfrey leaves. That was leveled out and added to the cauldron before the process was repeated another two times. That done, she stirred the potion 1... 2... 3... times clockwise. As she did so, she noted as the colour started changing to a faint lilac. That meant that she was doing things correctly. She smiled.

Next, five white willow leaves were set aside, and Madison worked on crushing one with her fingers and sprinkling it into the cauldron. The potion was stirred counter-clockwise, and then Madison proceeded to crush another leaf and added that in as well. She repeated the process of alternating between adding a crushed leaf and stirring until all five had been added. That done, she carefully dropped in a one inch piece of willow bark and now all she had to do was wait.

She waited and waited and waaaaited what felt like forever, but was really less than ten minutes. It was more like what the professor mentioned, and took about nine, Madison was just slightly impatient. It was something that she needed to work on.

FINALLY her potion had turned into a thick yellow paste. She was done!

Madison doled her potion into a few vials, figuring that it would be silly of her to dispose of whatever she didn't hand into the professor. Who knew when it might come in handy?? There was plenty for her to use now, and she put all but one vial into her bag. The other vial, she wrote a label on:

Hanna heard a 'Mmmhm' from near her and looked up at Professor Baldvinsson as he was doing his rounds. She gave him a smile, before returning to her work. With her wonky writing in the absence of something solid to lean on, she jotted down the ingredients and instructions thus far, before turning her attention again to Professor Noble.

She pulled the comfrey leaves from her kit, as well as her measuring spoons. Cleaning those, too, before measuring out the three level tablespoons with aid of her knife as Professor Noble demonstrated. She brought each measure up to her eye to inspect the levelness of it, before adding it to her cauldron. Now to stir, she extracted her stirring rod, cleaned that, plopped it into her cauldron and stirred three times clockwise. To her eyes, she saw her potion turn light lilac. So far it seemed good. Next step was adding white willow leaves. She crushed each leaf before adding it to the cauldron with an anticlockwise stir between each addition. She peeked up a few times to make sure her crushing wasn't too much, comparing it to how Professor Noble's willow leaves appeared.

The final step was adding the willow bark. She pulled put a little measuring stick, which she rarely found useful, and checked that it was one inch, before adding it to the cauldron. She just had to wait for her potion to simmer into a thick yellow paste now. Setting her timer for eight minutes, she set about half observing her potion, and half cleaning her area. Scourgifying her equipment before packing it away, and putting her potion ingredients back into her kit, and jotting down the rest of the ingredients and instructions, still keeping an eye on her potion. No use having it turn into a bubbling green.

Once her timer went off at eight minutes, she added a sample of it to a clean vial, adding a label with her name on it, and taking it to Professor Noble. "This is a neat one, Professor! It will definitely come in handy." With the remaining potion, she added it to more clean and labelled vials, and carefully put them into her kit. Her knees and elbows had plenty of bruises now that she was forced to practice her dancing in her robes. Tripping over was a constant issue.

Were she more easily distracted, Jessa may have paid attention to the shenanigans and reprimand going on around her. As it stood, Jessa took potion brewing very seriously and liked to maintain her focus. It may have been a weaker form of the typical bruise healing potion but that didn't mean she would botch it up.

Save that...er...Valentine's Day mess, Jessa hadn't botched a potion in literal years and wouldn't grow complacent just because this one wasn't as potent.

When instructed to, Jessa added the three tablespoons of dried comfrey leaves after using the knife to make sure the measurements were level. She had a habit of following along word for word, so even while Abra was opting to use his book, the Ravenclaw was moving nearly in sync with the man's words. She knew the recipe and could go it on her own but the last time she'd moved ahead of the man, he'd gotten deep into his feelings about it. This was the closest she could get to moving at the pace she was used to. The fact there were timed elements also impeded her ability to go at a faster pace but again, she would not be botching this potion so she would exercise the necessary patience.

A lot of potions required some degree of patience.

Once added, she stirred three times in a clockwise motion. There was no surprise when the solution began to turn a faint lilac colour. There wasn't a chance she'd be getting it wrong.

Jessa crushed the white willow leaves, all five of them, lightly between her fingers then dropped them into the cauldron. Between each, she gave a stir in an anticlockwise motion.

Up next, the inch of willow bark. Jessa dopped it--not literally--into her cauldron and began the wait. Again, a lot of potions required patience. Right now she'd need 8 minutes of it or so.

Jessa sat by her cauldron, occasionally glancing down at her watch before looking back to her brew. Slowly the colour was beginning to change. 10 minutes later, she was satisfied with the thick yellow paste it had become. Good. Jessa scooped some into a vial with her name, year and house on it then brought it to the front. The rest she supposed she would keep, for science.

5. Add the willow bark.
6. Simmer for 10 minutes until the potion resembles a thick, yellow paste.

Stand and walk around? That would’ve been okay if he didn’t have a potion to keep an eye on. Still, Max mumbled a quick word of thanks to Baldvinsson as the man did his rounds and he gave his foot a wiggle as instructed. He wasn’t wrong, it did help a little.

And then it was the other Professors turn to comment and Max found himself nodding obediently when Noble reprimanded him for using his watch rather than a timer. Right. Yes. The timer…. that was probably a good idea. Oops.

He was determined to get this right, so brow furrowed in concentration, Max checked and then double checked the recipe and the method in his textbook.

What were level tablespoons and did it really matter???? He glanced around at his classmates before simply adding three heaped tablespoons of dried comfrey leaves to his mixture. Max then set about stirring three times in the direction instructed.

Lilac???? His potion wasn’t lilac.

Why did this always happen???

Ummmmmm.

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

She set to work on following the next steps given to them. Pulling out her knife, Kaitlynn ran the smooth edge against the tablespoons of dried comfrey leaves making them level and dumping them in one at a time. She then stirred the contents three time in a clockwise manner watching as it turned a faint lilac color as the Professor said it would. She then pulled out five white willow leaves. Lightly crushed leaf. Counterclockwise stir. Lightly crushed leaf. Counterclockwise stir. Lightly crushed leaf. Counterclockwise stir. Lightly crushed leaf. Counterclockwise stir. Lightly crushed leaf. Counterclockwise stir.

She pulled out a one inch piece of willow bark and with a deep breath that was completely unnecessary, she dropped it into the cauldron while staring at her watch. Eight minutes to simmer. Eight minutes to clean up and write out her label. She cleaned up all the ingredients she just used and packed them back up in their rightful places. She then pulled out about four vials and had them at the ready. She decided to make a few labels. One for the class and others for her own use. After all, if she did this right she was going to keep some of this paste handy.

A quick glance at her watch and then into the cauldron. It looked like the color was changing but it wasn't ready just yet, there was still about two minutes until it was supposed to be done. So she waited. and just stared into her cauldron with the occasional glance at her watch. Finally, the second hand landed right where it needed to be and in her cauldron sat a thick yellow paste. She placed the paste in the vials tossing the labels on them. She set them aside for a moment so that she could clean up her cauldron, "Scourgify". She looked into it and was satisfied that it was clean.

Zoryn was a cool gift. She nodded in agreement with lil’ Lukey and gave his head a nice lil’ pat. “Points don’t really matter anyways,” she winked. Not to her, at least. Honestly, losing points was a much bigger accomplishment than gaining them. Most everyone could GAIN. But it took a hint of rebellion to lose and most non-Gryffindors weren’t about that life. If anything, they were trailblazers. As for blessing him with her partnership, the older Gryffindor just smiled at the younger boy. “Anytime, Lukey.”

Anyways, they were made to go to their cauldrons now and despite the fact that Zoryn REALLY just wanted to fly (this was also FLYING class and it was false advertising at the moment) (she wasn’t a fan), she did do as was told. Shocker. Taking out her wand she added a cup of water into the cauldron with a well-practiced “augamenti.”

And also the arnica root thing. Half a cup of that went into the potion too. See? She was doing JUST FINNNNNEEEE. What could possibly go wrong!? Zor set her timer for three minutes, looking around at the rest of the group while she waited. It didn’t help that she hadn’t actually gotten her dandelion petals ready yet, but nothing to worry about! She managed to figure that situation out in the last ten seconds of the timer. And in they went!

At this point in the program, she was caught up with whatever Professor Noble had been trying to demonstrate for them (and maybe she did snicker a bit as his arm was still tied up until now, if only Coach B left it like that). Three level tablespoons of dried comfrey leaves? Zoryn had NO idea what a level tablespoon was. So she just did whatever Noble was doing to her best ability. Eh. Close enough.

Annnnnnd to stir. Her least favorite part of ALL potions.

Cloooockwise.

She could do that. Threeeee times, to be exact.

Zoryn wasn’t sure she’d call her potion ‘faint’ lilac. But it was definitely lilac so that was a good sign, right? Which meant next she had to add the five white willow leaves. Using her index finger and thumb, she crushed each one light-ish-ly and added them in one at a time, making sure to give the whole potion a whirl in the anti clockwise direction between each drop.

She hated stirring. Had she mentioned that yet?

And FINALLY she added willow bark and let the potion start to simmer. Which meant EIGHT WHOLE MINUTES. Of course, she set her timer to the eight minute mark and watched everyone else during that time. Her favorite hobby was watching the first years struggle. Ah. She was once that young and naive and bad at potions too.

Oh how the turntables turn.

AND by the time the eight minutes were up, her potion had managed to turn into a deep, murky yellow. Which meant she could take a sample and y’know, turn her in or whatever. Yeah, she began to do just that.

Juniper was quite proud of herself and the way her potion was going. Everything was going so far so good. Really though it wasn’t hard to do. That was saying a lot for her. Potions wasn’t one strongest points, it never was. But this wasn’t too bad. She continued along writing down the instructions and following along with them.

Next she took the measuring spoon, with a silent scourgify she cleaned it of dirt or anything that wasn’t supposed to be there. Measuring out three tablespoons and leveled it out with the knife. Adding that to her cauldron and stirring it three times in a clockwise motion. A faint liliac? It was always nice to get those little color descriptions. Well it looked like a light lilac. That was a faint wasn’t it?

Now it was time to take the willow leaves. She crushed them between her fingers. Each leaf was crushed one at a time. One Stir Two Stir Three Stir Four Stir Five Stir. After that the willow bark was added. Willow must be something that was really good for taking care of business. A natural healer of some sort.

Simmer time. Juniper went ahead and labeled her sample vial, and since she was allowed to do whatever she wanted to do with the rest she labeled another vial with bruise paste. When the contents of the cauldron turned to a thick yellow paste, she filled both of the vials. Taking the vial labeled with her name and info up to the front.
