Default Potions Lesson - Wiggenweld Potion

At first, you might have thought Javier was sitting on his desk - but that wasn't the professor propped up on the surface in a sitting position. It was a plain white dummy without a face, because that would be weird, in Javi's opinion and the dummy seemed to have fallen into a bit of bad luck. Its arm was in a sling, it had a bandage on its leg, and a fake gash on its other leg. It strongly resembled one of those muggle medical dummies - but again, without a face. Javier could not stress enough how much that weirded him out.

The professor himself was standing behind his desk, arms folded as he leaned against the blackboard as he waited for the students to file in.

OOC: hello hello hello! Welcome to your potions lesson! This is NOT your first potions lesson with Javier - students will have had at least a handful already at this point. Be sure to please review the SSRPG rules and the Potions Classroom Rules prior to posting. We'll move on in about 24 hours!

CLASS PROGRESSION:
Mini Activity - what's in your magical "first aid kit"?
Question 1 - What healing potions exist in our world and what do they do?
Question 2 - Why is the Wiggenweld Potion one of the more commonly used healing potions? Why is it so popular?
Main Activity - Lets Brew Us a Wiggenweld Potion!

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

When Brandon had finished heating his potion, he took it away from the heat and let it cool. While he waited, he finished his notes on the potion, and wrote a little about his feelings while making it-- this soothed him. He waved his wand over the potion, once. Counterclockwise. "Curatio." He wrote that in his notes too, and added that he thought he'd brewed it right. Even though he felt awful in several places, like his chest and his hands and his brain. This made him feel very proud of himself. It was like he could do anything. "I'm done," he shared, to nobody.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Colours could be SO mesmerising! It was all Jude could do to not be completely sucked into staring. Right! So the remaining five lionfish spines… in they went. These were immediately followed up by half a teaspoon of mucus, the point at which the potion turned purple. Yet again with the stirrer, everything was stirred - five times counterclockwise. Back to red then! Goodness! The Hufflepuff was having a grand time with this!

And when the remaining half teaspoon of the flobberworm mucus was added, orange appeared just as Hernandez’s recipe said. More counterclockwise stirring ensued - no, his arms didn’t hurt; if they were strong enough to do lifts during dance routines, then they could definitely manage rounds of stirring. Soon, the potion was yellow again. The three cups of Honey Water went in which made the liquid in the cauldron turn turquoise. Precisely five drops of boom berry juice joined the mix then ten counterclockwise stirs were done. While the potion was simmering for the required thirty minutes, Jude busied himself by tidying up his workstation and making any other notes that he had accidentally omitted.

Once the minutes had expired, the potion was left to cool. Five minutes on the button, the seventh year made a counterclockwise wave with his wand. “Curatio!’’ came the muttered incantation. Was that it? No more bright colour changes accompanied the word?

That was cool.

...But Mercer, apparently, wasn't. Not in a class. Was it because there were other people around? Was he embarrassed that a first year was talking to him? She knew enough about life to know sometimes people got weird as they got older. But she was in disbelief over this. She trusted him enough to come to him, and he wouldn't teach her? He was against helping anyone? "Even me?" Mia looked like she might cry, confusion and hurt on her features, but as he offered to fill the cauldron for her, she grabbed the cauldron from the tabletop and turned her whole body angrily, holding it far away from him. "I'm telling Aunt Cat," she informed him coldly, shooting daggers back at him as she carried her cauldron back to her own work station.

Fine. She didn't need him to teach her. She especially didn't need his water. She didn't need him at all. Fine.
Mercer was ready to have the HARDEST heart against sad faced little Mia, but he wasn't prepared for tiny fury. When she clutched her whole cauldron to herself and stomped off, he was left flabbergasted. How in the world was he supposed to keep working when there was someone in the world who was mad at him? At. Him. Mercer Doyle Branxton, who no one had ever been mad at before.

His potion turned red again, and he dropped the stirrer to scurry after Tiny Fury. "Stop that, you're making me feel like a monster." He dragged her back to his work station, set up her cauldron, and filled it with water before she could slosh off again in a huff. "Don't tell my mom, okay? I can't deal with angry women. Of any size." Mercer eyed this particular angry woman-child as he added more flobberworm mucus and started stirring again.

"Just stand there and get to work already. We have to sacrifice some more salamanders to the great cause of fake injury juice." His potion went yellow and he added honey water, followed by boom berry juice. Again, ingredients that didn't make him want to throw himself off a cliff. "I'm basically done, okay? You can stand there and glare at me while you work."

Mia couldn't help it. Mercer was being rude, and he wasn't even listening to her, so she DID think he was being a monster. Her little face was set in a semi-permanent glare as he dragged her back, took her cauldron, and proceeded to fill it himself. After she'd refused. She had WANTED to do it HERSELF. "I didn't need you to do it for me, I just wanted to learn," she reprimanded. She knew all along she could have done what the other first years did, but she wanted the challenge. And Mercer had taken that from her. Her ears burned with betrayal.

But it was Mercer. She loved him. She was mad, mad, mad, but there was the teeniest, tiniest voice in the back of her brain that told her he was now trying to be helpful, in his own Mercer way.

But then there was the louder voice that told her he was being a jerk, here, at her new school, in front of all their classmates. In front of her Head of House. He was treating her like a bother, like she wasn't worth listening to, like she couldn't have learned if he'd taken a second to show her.

His ordering her around - to stand there and get to work - was the final straw. If she hadn't known potions could go horribly, horribly wrong - from an explosion hospitalizing her mum once - she would have sabotaged his potion then and there. Instead, she gritted her teeth and settled for manifestation of failure: "I hope your potion sucks, Mercer."

Annoyed that she was stuck here now that her cauldron was full - she wasn't strong enough to carry it back, and she didn't know how to levitate it safely yet - Mia took a couple trips to transfer her ingredients from her old workstation to Mercer's. She took a long minute to readjust everything to the way it had been, her parchment of notes in front of her, and - after shooting a stern look at Mercer, daring him to tell her what to do again - she dumped the half cup of salamander blood into her cauldron, checked the minute on her watch, and began to stir counterclockwise. Three whole minutes. She fought hard to avoid Mercer's gaze.

Sure enough, as the nearly five minutes had passed, and his heating potion was turning indigo. So, he was free to move onto the next step with a touch of relief, adding the last of the salamander blood into his cauldron. The dark bluish color lightened to a pink in reaction so he turned the heat down to a lower flame as instructed. One…two…three minutes and the potion had deepened again, this time into a rich red once more This potion really did go through the entire spectrum of colors like it was marking off a checklist. Into his potion went some of the lionfish spines.

One…two…three…four…five.

And the heat went back up to medium and Rajesh waited for the potion to once more be a yellow color. When it did, the other five lionfish spines went into his cauldron as the next step. He then carefully measured out the ˝ teaspoon of flobberworm mucus and added that as well, watching as the potion turned to purple. A color they hadn’t hit yet. Grabbing the stirring rod once more, the Ravenclaw stirred his potion five times clockwise.

One…two…three…four…five.

Back to red.

SPOILER!!: Steps
  • Add the final 1/2 cup of salamander blood, causing the potion to turn pink.
  • Heat on low flame until the potion turns red (about 3 minutes).
  • Add five lionfish spines.
  • Heat on medium flame until the potion turns yellow (about 2 minutes).
  • Add five more lionfish spines.
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon of flobberworm mucus. Potion should turn purple.
  • Stir 5 times counterclockwise. The potion should now be red in color.

Uhhh... Nora was nowhere near confident enough to feel she'd brew the potion well enough to keep an effective vial of it after the class was over. SHe'd keep one anyway, but as for being confident about it? That was a probably not from her. As she listened to the lecture, her eyebrows rose in mild fascination. Yes, she had indeed heard of Sleeping Beauty. It was interesting to know that a Wiggenweld Potion was behind it all. Magic had been every where her whole life, and she'd been too clueless to realize it.

The rest of the lecture was somewhat lost to Nora as she mentally prepared herself for the brewing process. It was still something that took her by surprise every time she did it, but then again, the whole magical world took her by surprise.

Once her cauldron was clean and in place, she pointed her wand toward it. "Aguamenti!" she said. The water filled the cauldron until it reached the brim. She then measured out a half cup of salamander blood (Eww) and added it to the water, causing it to turn a shade of red. Double eww. She then began the process of stirring counter-clockwise, all the while watching as the shade of red turned more orange. She frowned at the crushed unicorn horn. It made her sad to think of a unicorn losing its horn, and then it being crushed on top of that. Regardless, she poured it in, as well.

More salamander blood--eww. Did people ever get used to this? She had a feeling it didn't phase the professor one bit. She'd get to that point someday, too, but the newness of mixing up all these animal parts still hadn't sunk in yet. She poured it in and watched as her brew turned a shade of yellow this time. With a bit more stirring, though, she was looking down at a green mixture of ingredients. Things seemed to be coming along decently, but then again, they could just be because Nora was enjoying the rainbow of colors she'd seen.

Rajesh looked over his notes from the board to see he was over halfway through the brewing process which seemed to be going just fine. Even with all the color changes. He measured out another ˝ teaspoon of flobberworm mucus and added it into his cauldron, causing the liquid inside to turn orange. Then he took up his stirring rod once more and began stirring counterclockwise. Stir…stir…stir…stir…stir, the Ravenclaw sighing softly as it seemed to take forever to turn yellow once more. But turned yellow it did, so he added the honey water which made it turquoise again.

Round and round they went.

And in went five carefully measured drops of boom berry juice. Back to stirring counterclockwise, except this time only ten complete stirs. One….two….three…four…five…six…seven…eight…nine…ten . Raj looked at his watch to see what time it was as he finished the last stir and took note of it on his parchment before sitting back to wait out the next thirty minutes as directed as his potion simmered. He took the time to double check that he had written down all his notes and everything he needed to reference back to it as well as exploring the other ingredients Professor Hernandez had mentioned in the textbook.

SPOILER!!: Steps
  • Add an additional 1/2 teaspoon of flobberworm mucus. Potion should turn orange.
  • Stir counterclockwise until the potion turns yellow (roughly 4 minutes)
  • Add Honey water. Potion will now be turquoise.
  • Add 5 drops of boom berry juice.
  • Stir the potion 10 times counterclockwise, then let it simmer for thirty minutes.

It really was a pity that Mitsuki found herself so distracted today seeing as brewing this potion would be something she would find incredibly useful especially considering how versatile the brew was. Everything became less distracting when she found that she could add no more to her parchment without it becoming too busy and she was a Ravenclaw who enjoyed the simple pleasures for the most part. There was no telling, to herself at least, how much time had gone by before her shoulders straightened and she looked around the classroom to see everyone busy and hunched over their cauldrons in varying degrees of stress. The normal, or expected, response would be to feel a surge of panic and immediately jump to action. Mitsuki, on the other hand, felt a calmness as her eyes fell on the board and a very clear set of instructions as to what needed done and it was easy enough to follow instructions.

Most of the time, at least.

First was filling her cauldron with water. She knew perfectly well how to use Aguamenti for this and yet a bit of burnt something wafting in the air around her head started to float over in the direction of the sink. Today she was clearly meant to fill her cauldron up in the sink.

*CLACK*
*CLANG*
*PING*
*THUD*

It was quite the task getting her cauldron down off its burner and to the floor, thankfully neither it nor any of the equipment or the floor getting damaged in the process, and then she was rolling it over towards the sink since it was quite heavy for her to carry all the way from her station by herself. Hoisting it up was something she could more easily manage, however, and she did so with a couple of muted squeaks and grunts...and another loud PING and KLUNK. Humming to herself, clearly unbothered by it all, she turned on the tap and watched the water fill her cauldron up to the brim. Problem now being that it was significantly more heavy than before and there was no way she could roll it back to her station now.

"...I cannot carry it," she noted, pursing her lips while she tilted her head from either side to examine her cauldron some more. Perhaps she could levitate it back to her station...hmmm...

Apollo had realized after he stated his potion that he was probably supposed to give a use for it, since that's what everyone else did. But instead he just sat there feeling terrible at himself for not really paying attention until it came to brew the potion. He could do potions, couldn't he? People in his family were good at potions and he was a seventh year. He just needed to focus on the steps and not on the fact that he poorly answered a question (even if Hernandez still seemed positive in his praise)

"Aguamenti," He cast, a stream of water filling the cauldron up with water. He added half a cup of salamander blood (wait, there was 2 cups on the list but only half a cup now??). It looked like a cauldron full of blood. Counterclockwise stir - would be easier if his mother would have shown him the spell she uses to automatically stir things ..... until it hinted at orange, then it was time to add the crushed unicorn horn. Why was he only just realizing how much animal parts were in potions? Is this why his mother was vegetarian?

Another half a cup of salamander blood and the potion turned yellow. It was truly a potion that showcased the colours of the rainbow, wasn't it? More stirring this time clockwise until the potion turned green. And another half a cup of salamander blood. Turquoise. Okay, so far so good. Chizpurfle fangs (Apollo pre-counted his seven) and then proceeded to add them to the cauldron one at a time. Casting incendio to create a flame under his cauldron, it was time to wait. He decided to look around to see how his peers were doing while he was waiting, casually looking at his potion deepen in colour to a rich indigo.

As he was looking around, he heard noise from Mitsuki's direction. "Try the levitation charm," he suggested to her. He'd offer to do it for her, but wasn't sure how she felt about people doing things for her. Ravenclaws always seemed to prefer doing things themselves and the hard way, because why didn't she just use aguamenti in the first place??

And the final half cup salamander blood, where the potion instantly lightened to a pink. How did he lower the flame? He should know this by now, but time was ticking and once three minutes went by, he decided it was just enough time anyway and went ahead and added five of the lionfish spines. And waited for yet another colour change, before adding the remaining five lionfish spines. And the 1/2 teaspoon of flobberworm mucus, now he had a purple potion. Another stirring, this time counterclockwise again. Now the potion was red again. He added an addition 1/2 teaspoon of flobberworm mucus (ingredient he almost missed cause it wasn't on the list???). More counterclockwise stirring.

Honey water. Boom berry juice. More counterclockwise stirring (hopefully only ten times but he might have done an extra stir or two for good measure). And just wait and let it simmer now.....

Alas. The brewing part.

Sailor took it as a consolation that they could take their potions back to their dorms and actually use them when they need. It would save him from visits to the healer, if ever, and the Ravenclaw much preferred keeping his business to himself. Despite not being a very good listener and participant of the discussion earlier, he was at least focused and determined enough to want to do this correctly.

With his tray of ingredients now on his work station, as well as everything else he needed, Sailor started with a quick whispered "Scourgify" on his cauldron and followed that with a stream of water from his wand to fill it to the brim. Sailor moved fast, wanting to be finished with his potion as soon as he could, so he dumped half a cup of the salamander blood into his cauldron and started to stir it counterclockwise. Three minutes wasn't long, but the enemy here was keeping his focus. While he waited, he looked around to see if anything interesting was happening. Unfortunately, the injured dummy was still lifeless but also, fortunately, he had overheard a little exchange between the older Ravenclaw boy and the tiny Slytherin girl (Mercer and Mia). Sailor acted casually as he stirred his solution, but his eyes followed them briefly as he listened. Worthy entertainment, that was.

Ah, there was the orange colour.

Briefly glancing back at the board to see the next set of instructions, Sailor took crushed unicorn horn and dropped that into the cauldron, as well as another half a cup of the salamander blood. That's a lot of blood, he noted. When his potion turned yellow, Sailor took his stirrer and did that clockwise this time...until it was green. Shorter span of time compared to the last. Then, he added yet another half a cup of the blood which turned it turquoise in colour. Potions were dramatic like that, aren't they? With all that colour? Sailor was ready to dump all the chizpurfle fangs in one go, but remembered to do that one at a time until all seven of them were inside.

And more waiting. Sailor put the heat on medium flame and waited for things to happen, specifically for the potion to turn indigo now. It could maybe speed up, though. This took longer than his liking.

More waiting.

Waiting.

Brewing time was the best part of a potions lesson, the actually getting to use her hands and try to create something from scratch. Once they were released to work, Mouse pulled today's brown curls back from her face and secured it with a clip she kept in her bag before opening up her textbook and flipping to the page for today's potion. Taking note of all the needed ingredients, she took a moment to collect them all and lay them out in the order in which she would need them. Once she was all organized, it was time to start.

Alright, first things first. Pulling her cauldron closer, she unholstered her wand. "Aguamenti." With that filled to the brim, she grabbed her measuring cup and the salamander blood. Measuring out 1/2 a cup, she added it to her cauldron and watched as the current contents turned red. Grabbing her stirrer, she began to stir counter clockwise, quietly counting the rotations as she did so. "one, two, three." A smile stretched across her face at the new orange color, and she reached for the crushed unicorn horn to add a teaspoon to her mix. Another 1/2 cup of salamander blood - and now she had orange!

Another consult to the book told her she was looking for green next, so she began to stir clockwise as instructed - keeping an eye on it while she monitored the color instead of the time spent. Once she had finally gotten to green, another 1/2 cup of salamander blood was added and she had to stop herself from squealing at the new color. Turquoise was one of her favorite colors, so she almost wished she could stop here and yet... obediently she still began to drop each of her seven chizpurfle fangs into the concoction. "one, two, three, four, five, six... and seven." With that step completed, she brushed off her hands and lit her cauldron to a medium heat, looking up at the clock to note the time so that she could allow it to brew.

Once the 5 minutes were up, she looked down and confirmed the indigo color, before pouring in the last of her original 2 cups of salamander blood. Another smile as the potion turned pink, her other favorite color, before lowering the heat intensity to let it brew for another 3 minutes - this time again monitoring the color instead of the time. Once she was back to red, 5 lionfish spines were added and heat was increased again. And then... more waiting.

Oh look, yellow! In went the remaining 5 lionfish spines and 1/2 teaspoon of flobberworm mucus. Purple! Another couple stirs counter clockwise, "one, two, three, four... five." After the rotations were complete, once again the contents of her cauldron were red. Which had Mouse wondering if this potion was going to end up red at the end given how often it went back to this particular color. Another 1/2 teaspoon of flobberworm mucus went in and now she was at orange again. Her shoulder was beginning to protest, but now it came for more counter clockwise stirring - where she was looking for yellow once again. Mouse set to work, eyes darting between the potion and the clock. The latter primarily because she was anxious to be done with the stirring portion of today's potion.

Once she was at yellow, she poured in the 3 cups of honey water, smiling again as the potion was once more turquoise. Maybe she'd get lucky and that would be the final color! 5 drops of boom berry juice went in and 10 more counterclockwise rotations. "one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine... ten." With that completed and 30 minutes to go, she set herself a timer, pulling out her notes on the Wiggenweld again and ensuring she'd notated everything from the discussion earlier as well as adding some commentary regarding the brewing process. Once she'd finished that, she also started to doodle a wiggenweld tree before she heard the timer go off. Slipping on some gloves, she lifted the cauldron from the heat - extinguishing it in the process and set it aside to let it cool - another 5 minutes added to the timer.

Once that went off again, she picked up her wand again, moving it counter clockwise over her cauldron and speaking the incantation. "Curatio!" Once that was all done, she smiled pleased with her result before taking a vial and filling it full with her contents. She figured she'd let it be checked before heading out of the room with it, but she was feeling fairly confident.

Now... clean up.

So her answer was way off. Desiree was mildly disappointed about that, but she was more excited to finally get to the brewing process. She was even more excited when she learned they’d be able to actually use this potion… assuming she brewed it correctly, of course. Now she was more determined than ever to do a good job! She opened her textbook to the appropriate page and read the recipe. Whoa, there were a lot of steps! Merlin, she hoped she didn’t get confused and do things in the wrong order!

First things first, she set out her cauldron and equipment, cleaning each piece with a quick Scourgify. She next pointed her wand at her cauldron and cast Aguamenti, closely monitoring the water level until it reached the brim. Setting her wand aside, she picked up a measuring cup and poured ˝ cup of salamander blood. She added it to the cauldron, watching as the concoction turned red. So far, so good. Now she had to stir counterclockwise until it turned orange. She set her timer for three minutes, watching the potion as she stirred.

By the time the timer dinged, Desiree’s potion had turned a pleasant shade of orange. She carefully measured a teaspoon of crushed unicorn horn and added it to the mixture, followed by another ˝ cup of salamander blood. She smiled to herself as the potion turned yellow, her house color. Boy, Jude wasn’t wrong about the pretty colors! She set her timer again, this time for 1 minute, and stirred clockwise until the potion turned green. As the color change took place, she wondered if the potion was going to follow the full rainbow spectrum. Wouldn’t that be cool?! She consulted her book again, half-expecting the next color change to be blue, but it was turquoise instead. Well, that was sort of blue, right?

Desiree added another ˝ cup of salamander blood, watching as the color change described in her textbook took place. When that was done, she added the chizpurfle fangs. One… two… three… four… five… six… seven. As she did so, she wondered where those fangs came from and how one went about defanging a chizpurfle, and she imagined a poor little creature unable to eat because someone took its teeth. How sad! She had to look at her textbook again to keep from getting distracted by that thought. Next came the heating process. She aimed her wand at the burner, producing a medium flame with a quick Incendio, and set her timer for five minutes.

While the potion was heating, she measured out the final ˝ cup of salamander blood and set it aside. When the timer dinged, the potion had turned indigo, and she added the salamander blood. She positively beamed as the mixture turned pink, her favorite color. Could it stay that color, please? She checked her textbook again. No? Okay then. She reduced the flame and set the timer for three minutes, watching with mixed feelings as the concoction changed from pink to red. She was slightly sad to see the pretty pink color go, but she was happy that her potion was so far progressing as it was supposed to. When the timer went off, she added five lionfish spines.

Now what? Back to a medium flame. Sheesh, there were a lot of flame adjustments in this recipe! Desiree wasn’t sure she could keep up with them, had it not been for her proficiency in charms. She magically increased the flame and set her timer for two minutes, keeping a close eye on her cauldron all the while. Ah, there was her house color again! She added five more lionfish spines and a ˝ teaspoon of flobberworm mucus to the pretty yellow potion, watching as it turned purple. She liked that color too! It was her mum’s favorite color and the color of her dad’s house at Beauxbatons.

After Desiree made five counterclockwise stirs, her potion turned red. Again?! This was like the third time. Apparently the Wiggenweld potion likes the color red, she thought as she measured and added another ˝ teaspoon of flobberworm mucus. The mixture immediately turned orange. What next? More counterclockwise stirring. She set her timer and stirred for the required four minutes, closely monitoring the cauldron as its contents turned yellow. Looked like the potion was back to repeating the rainbow spectrum… so next should be green? She checked her book. Nope, turquoise. She measured out three cups of honey water and added that, watching as the color change took place. Okay, turquoise was a pretty color too!

Picking up her dropper, Desiree carefully added one, two, three, four, five drops of boom berry juice to the potion and gave it ten counterclockwise stirs. Now it had to simmer for thirty minutes. Wow, that was a long time! After setting her timer, she decided to take advantage of the wait time by cleaning and putting away the equipment she wouldn’t need to use again. When the thirty minutes were up, she extinguished the flame and set her timer for five minutes to allow the potion to cool. As she consulted her textbook again, she was pleased to see there was only one step left and even more pleased that it involved wandwork, something she was good at!

Brandishing her wand, she waved it counterclockwise over the cauldron and said the incantation clearly and firmly, “Curatio!” Was that it? Did she do it right?

Nora would be happy when the steps involving salamander blood were over and done with. As if was, though, the next step needed another half cup of it. The first year measured out the next half cup and poured it into the mixture. Once the potion was a turquoise color, she started adding the chizpurfle fangs one at a time. Once that was done, she put the flame on medium heat and waited out the five required minutes.

She was happy to see the next step involved adding in the last of the salamander blood. She poured it in, causing the potion to now be a shade of pink. She turned the flame down to a low setting then waited for about three minutes. Then it was time for the lionfish spines. In a way, potion ingredients were disgusting. Never in all her life did she think she'd be handling salamander blood, chizpurfle fangs, and lionfish spines, yet here she was. She added the five lionfish spines, and with a quick look at the instructions, she noticed she was about halfway finished.

Raj heard the sound of a certain younger Ravenclaw, turning to see her struggling with moving her cauldron. Was it just him or was something up with Mitzuki? Surely she was used to filling it up and handling it with magic rather than trying to move it which got him all confused. However, before he could inquire his timer went off pulling him back to his own potion. Apollo at least seemed to be talking with her, so he could do his final steps. He grabbed his gloves and took the cauldron off the heat that he had turned off, noting he wasn’t far behind Mouse in his work. Now it was another five minutes of waiting.

One…two…three…four….five.

Finally, he could finish it up. Rajesh took out his wand once more and gave it the counterclockwise wave while casting “Curatio.” It certainly seemed like everything was alright and correct in his brewing. Color wise and all. One would have to wait for the ultimate confirmation from a certain professor, the seventh year cleaning up his work area in the meantime.

SPOILER!!: Final Steps
  • Take the potion away from the heat and allow it to cool for 5 minutes.
  • Wave wand once over the potion in a counterclockwise motion while stating the incantation "curatio" to finish the potion

With the lionfish spines added to the brew, Nora changed the heat under the flame back to medium. She timed the two minutes and watched as the brew turned a shade of yellow. Once it was the color it was supposed to be, she added in five more lionfish spines. With a quick glance at the instructions, she made a face. Eww. Mucus. Flobberworm mucus, to be exact, but it didn't really matter where the mucus came from. It was disgusting either way. With a face of disgust still on her face, she measured out a half teaspoon of the mucus then added it to the potion. it darkened into a shade of purple.

She began stirring in a counter-clockwise motion, watching as the purple shade of the potion turned to a red color instead. She then measured out another half teaspoon of the mucus and added it to the cauldron. She couldn't be sure, but she was pretty sure that she was brewing this correctly. She hadn't blown up her cauldron yet or caused the potion to turn some weird kind of shade. Speaking of shades, the potion had now turned orange. She stirred in a counter-clockwise motion once again, and finally, after the required four minutes, the potion was yellow once again.

The yellow didn't last for long, though. Once the honey water had been added, it darkened into a shade of turquoise. She raised her dropper above the cauldron and squeezed in five drops of boomberry juice. She then stirred ten times counter-clockwise then settled in for the thirty minute wait. When it felt like an eternity had passed (ahem, thirty minutes), Nora removed the potion from the he burner and waited five more minutes. She picked up her wand and waved it over the cauldron. "Curatio!" she said.

Default big catchup post

Hope was immediately struck by the strange, battered dummy when she first entered class. She wondered what happened to it, but refrained from asking, as she'd already learned that her potions professor could sometimes be a bit grumpy. "Hello, Professor Hernandez, I'm sorry about your dummy" was all she said as she continued on into the room to take her place. She really badly wanted to draw a face on the poor dummy, though.

As the class progressed, Hope felt very outclassed by her more sophisticated classmates. Her answer of red cedar, sage, and sweetgrass as the 3 ingredients she'd have first in her potions first aid kit were not anything like the magical potions the the others mentioned. And she supposed her answer to the magical potion question, foxglove tea (useful for heart problems) was not really a magical potion (though it really was useful!). And she'd never heard of the Wiggenweld potion, though it now appeared they were about to make it.

Hope had done a lot of cooking and remedy preparation at home, but was not familiar with some of the equipment or ingredients of the well-stocked potions lab at Hogwarts. Nevertheless, she would attempt it!

Filling the cauldron was easy--at least she knew the water charm well enough. Then she added the first 1/2 cup of salamander blood and her potion turned red, just like the recipe said. When she started stirring clockwise, she thought her potion would never turn orange and that she'd done something wrong, but at last, just when she'd nearly given up, it did turn orange--orangeish? sort of red-orange? well, hopefully good enough). Then came unicorn horn and more salamander blood, and the potion turned--a shade of yellow--or was it still orange? no, it was definitely more yellow. Then more stirring, clockwise this time, till it turned green (or was it yellow-green?) Then yet more salamander blood. Did it hurt the salamander to have its blood taken? did they have to kill it? These questions bothered Hope so much that she nearly missed when her potion turned a light greenish-blue (that was turquoise, right?), and she added her 7 chizpurfle fangs (oh dear, poor chispurfles!).

Hope set her flame to medium and waited for it to turn indigo while contemplating the ethics of using animal ingredients in potion making. When her magical alarm went off after 5 minutes, she saw that it had and added the last 1/2 cup of salamander blood (not all from the same salamander, she devoutly hoped) and waited while her potion turned a sort of purplish-pink (that was pink, though, wasn't it?). Turning the flame to low, she waited till it turned red again (really red this time, she was certain). Now came the lionfish spines (oh dear...). Then the flame went back up to medium till the potion turned yellow, then more lionfish spines (maybe they just picked them up from where the fish shed them or something). Now...flobberworm mucus--at least she knew you could get that easily enough, and the worms didn't even notice. It was rather disgusting, though. But it did turn her potion purple. Then stirring, and it was red. Then more mucus, then orange; then stirring and yellow again--this was like a strange rainbow!

Finally she added honey water--at last a normal ingredient!--and her potion was turquoise again. Then boom berry juice, five drops---ooops! was that an extra drop that fell in? Hope wasn't sure, but it wasn't like she could take it out again, so she went on and hoped for the best. Then she had to stir it 10 more times counterclockwise, and she could finally put it on to simmer and relax for a while. This was a lot more complicated than the remedies she was used to making in her mother's kitchen.

Finally it was done and she could take it off to cool. Then came the magic, with her nearly new larch wand! Carefully she took it in her hand and pointed it over her cauldron while saying, as clearly as she could, the strange word, Curatio! to finish it. There, it was done. Hope didn't know if it would work or not--she was still uncertain about some of those colors and especially about that possible extra drop of boom berry juice--but at least it hadn't exploded, so that was something.

OOC: The big catch-up post I did yesterday seems to have gotten lost in the internet and I almost didn't have the heart to start over.

be curious, not judgmental

Around the 3-minute mark of stirring, Mia's potion was orange-ish, so she added the teaspoon of crushed unicorn horn, trying not to give much thought to how, when, or where it was harvested. Then went in the other half cup of salamander blood, and she stood a little straighter, pleased with herself when the concoction turned yellow. Cool. She double-checked the parchment before stirring clockwise this time, different from their first stirring, and watched it attentively for it to turn green. She could see the appeal in potion-making; she imagined her mum here in this classroom all those years ago, falling in love with this. The process was a little too tedious for her liking, but Mia was starting to understand it - it was almost a little bit fun.

She squinted a bit as the potion's color changed, wondering just how deep of green it needed to be before she moved on. She had left her textbook back at her old seat and wondered if the recipe had pictures that would have helped her gauge the right shade of green it needed to be - that was something to investigate later - but about a minute had passed, so she assumed it was fine and added the next half cup of salamander blood. The potion changing from green to a very pretty turquoise made her eyes sparkle with delight, and the tiniest hint of a smile remained on her face as she added the 7 chizpurfle fangs, one by one.

The instructions indicated that the change from turquoise to indigo was going to take a little while, so after lighting the burner the old-fashioned way - she knew better than to ask Mercer to teach her incendio - and taking about 20 seconds to try to gauge what was a "medium" flame, she started shuffling around her ingredients, lining up what was to come next in order: the last half cup of salamander blood, half of the total lionfish spines, then the other half, and-- oh. Flobberworm mucus would be next after that, but it hadn't been on the ingredient part of the list, so she'd neglected to pick that up from the front of the room before she began brewing. She wondered if the professor was seeing who had been paying attention during the initial explanations as she went to retrieve the mucus, eyeing him a little suspiciously as she went. He was a tricky one, wasn't he?

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

The clock struck the top of the hour, which meant that class was officially over - as was their time to brew. Everyone seemed to have done fairly well - aside from the small little disruption from Mitsuki dropping the cauldron and giving him a heart attack before he went to help. "Alright class, time is up!" Javier announced, clapping his hands. "Those of you who finished your brew, please bring up a vial for grading. Everyone else, leave your potions where they're at. I will come by and collect finished potions that are brewed correctly to help stock the Hospital Wing, should we ever need any Wiggenweld," he explained with a smile. AND he'd make good on his promise to give the students who'd correctly brewed the potion their own vial at the next class, once he went through and graded the correct ones. It was going to take him a good amount of time to get through all of these.

"For homework - an essay on THREE of the variations of Wiggenweld Potions and what their main differences are in preparation for next lesson," he announced. "12 inches at the MINIMUM. Class dismissed!"
