Default Potions Lesson 2: Sweet like chocolate

Having lost his morning break to disciplinary matters, Professor Noble had brought a large cup of coffee with him into the classroom. He needed caffeine most mornings, but something told him that he’d require it even more today. Hopefully he wouldn’t regret opting for a more, er, relaxed style of class. He sipped the black nectar as he waited for the students, occasionally glancing over at the large cauldron steaming on the burner at the front of class - the burner where he'd usually be demonstrating alongside them. Those close enough to peep inside would see the potion was a bright shimmering red; those further back might have instead noticed that the side benches were unusually full today. Where they usually hosted extra equipment or ingredients, today they were laden with several large catering-style trays covered in a cloth.

Picking up a piece of chalk, Noble headed to the blackboard and started to write the overarching theme for their next few lessons, Bewitching the senses, underlining it with a flourish.

Do come in students, and get settled quickly. Who knows what temperament the less-than-ideally caffeinated Potions Professor might have?

Max perked up a little when Professor Noble mentioned taste. He was a growing boy, he was always hungry and just to confirm this, his stomach gave a little grumble. Maybe they were going to get something to eat... then again, did he really want to eat anything Professor Noble gave them? Perhaps not.

Feeling slightly deflated, Max listened to his classmates speak up about how taste was perceived. He didn't really have anything extra to add so he jotted down a few of the points on his parchment.

The returned greeting was nice enough in both tone and nod so Cassie was going to try and take that as a good sign for today. Only time would tell to see how the class actually progressed. She still wasn’t get a good vibe off what was written on the board, but she didn’t get all that much time to think on it before Professor Noble made his move and began the lesson with a literal bang. Good thing the Ravenclaw wasn’t nearly as jumpy as she had been in the first one or two classes after their encounter.

Senses…specifically taste…were the order of the day, Cass jotting down what was being said but not answering herself. There was only so much one could say on the matter and her classmates were pretty quick to bring up anything the seventh year could think of on the question. Taste buds and the effects of the other senses and all that.

Potions was a favorite of his, but still made him a bit scared every time the professor said something. He was terrified of messing up and making something go boom. He figured today would give him no different feeling. Patrick looked around as each student said something about taste buds, he had a slightly different feeling. Raising his hand he waited to be called on like the good student he was trying to be today. "It's funny that things that have a specific taste can have different properties with different things. Like salt, on most foods it makes it savory or seasoned but on fruit it makes it sweeter."

Yay, Hamlet! • Cathopper • Disney Fanatic • I was normal once...

Flynn had chosen to sit at a station in the very far back of the classroom. Just like the Professor, he was also somewhat sleep deprived, but he did not have the chance to get his morning cup of tea to wake him up. So he looked the part too. He had rummaged through his messenger bag and pulled out his textbook along with a piece of parchment and a quill. He looked like he was going to take notes, but was that really what was going to happen?

Maybe it was his sleep deprivation, but Lucifer's Noble's voice was more annoying today than usual.

He waited for everyone to say their answers before he raised his hand. He answered, "With your tongue." Duh.

Regardless, at the back of the classroom is where Natalie sat and vaaaaguely began to pay attention to the lesson. They would be... bewitching the senses? That sounded dangerous, honestly. Like, it sounded like the imperius curse or something. But what did she know? Not much. As for taste... and how they perceived it... Well.

"Well, uh... our taste buds?" Our taste buds are what... "perceived" taste... right? Maybe she should have stayed silent.

Well, it was certainly short and to the point. A bit too simplistic, perhaps, but Noble nodded all the same. “Yes, our taste buds are the primary sensor.” He was after more specifics, however.
SPOILER!!: Skylar

Which brought her to the answer of how they perceive taste, it was more than just a single sensation and just the differing taste buds in ones mouth, on one's tongue. "Taste, in our brains, is actually a food's flavors, smells, and touch rolled into one, so it can't be limited to just ... one sense." But yes, it used taste buds, along with the feel of the food and the odors. If something smelled sour, it was going to taste as such.

Noble perched against the front desk, taking a long sip of coffee. Had they bothered to read their textbooks? “Technically, taste as a sense is just the perception of a gustatory nerve being stimulated. That is, the signal that is transported from the tongue to the brain. What you’re describing…with smell and touch…is the idea of flavour.”
SPOILER!!: Jessa

Merlin's beard someone tell her she wasn't late. See, late was reason enough to run back up to bed--the faster the better to work up a 'fever'--then swallow something to make sure she was sick.

On its own, being sick wasn't the hugest deal, but this was Professor Noble and just about everything she did turned out to be wrong for him so to actually do something wrong....yeah...she'd go ahead and pass on that one thanks.

Jessa skidded to a stop at the door, slipping in just as the man appeared there
to slam it shut.

Phew, talk about a close call!

The Ravenclaw mumbled a greeting to the man before taking a seat at the very back. Now that she wasn't in danger of the man's ire, she could focus on the danger of having her lungs shut down from the sudden sprint. Jessa reached into her pocket, pulling for her inhaler and taking a few puffs while the man began the lesson. She didn't have time to look about and let her curiosity wander, that was reserved for being a few minutes early to class and being afforded all the time in the world.

For her, it was already time to settle down.

"Your taste'll be pretty skewed when you've got a stuffy nose for the reason Skylar touched on. One of its links is to smell." Breeeeeathe.

The Ravenclaw had barely made it into class on time, and didn’t do herself any favours with her first response either. Noble grunted. ”Your taste buds won’t be affected, but yes, your perception of the flavour will be.”

So they'd be bewitching the senses... starting with taste.

While he felt more awake, his reflexes had yet to return, so he'd fallen behind as answers flew here and there, his brain taking too long to function. Instead, he'd decided to jot down everything that the others had answered, and remained silent. He supposed perceiving taste differed from one person to another - maybe one thing that he found tasty, another person would not - but he wasn't sure how it all worked. His thoughts were a jumbled up mess, so for the moment, he'd settled on paying attention.

A quiet one. Well, he looked a little more alert at least, so that was something.

Yes, taste buds were the obvious answer.. but Kye nodded when Skylar spoke. Jessa as well. "Yea, our senses of sight and smell work together to tell us what kind of food we are eating," she agreed. "I would say that's why we often here phrases like 'That looks tasty' or 'That smells delicious.'" Because if you thought about it, those wouldn't make sense on their own. "Although they can trick you... If a meal looks good but tastes rotten, that's a terrible time," she added, recalling a regrettable dinner she had once been presented. Ugh... disgusting.

Of the definitions thus far presented, Valkyrie’s had to be the least bad. “They work together, yes. And you’re right, we don’t all have the same response to the chemical effects food has on our tongue.”

While the first question came, Dorian silently placed his stuff on the desk while he thought of an answer to give. After he was done placing his textbook on the desk he raised his hand in the air.

"We taste by putting food in our mouth"
he said and thought that technically he wasn't wrong. Perhaps not the kind of answer the professor was looking for...

Another Ravenclaw who’d barely made it on time…but at least he’d got straight to getting his things out and organised. Noble simply nodded at the boy’s answer. It wasn’t wrong…but he couldn’t say it added to the discussion either.

She hoped that would help her be in the know, and be able to do well with the lesson. She wanted to do well, but she was glad that the lessons seemed to be interesting, because that was always good. and they were starting with taste first. Hattie liked taste, mostly because she liked to eat and drink yummy things. But first, she needed to answer the question. she wrote some notes down, of what her fellow students were saying before she put her hand into the air, and spoke when it was her turn.

"Well, we taste by putting food into our mouth, and the foods touch our taste buds. But like a few of my fellow peers have said, the sense of taste is closely linked to smell, and I'm pretty sure that if an individual can't smell, they then struggle to taste as well"

Noble rubbed his temple, pretty sure at this point they were just going round in circles. This was why he’d brought coffee in with him. Since when had he mentioned talking about smell? He was after the different types of TASTE.

GAH.

Was the boy at the back making notes? Noble sure hoped so, and that it wasn’t doodles covering his parchment. Maybe he’d go have wander shortly to check.

He hadn’t necessarily expected an answer like that from Patrick, and a smirk curled on his lips. “That is a decent point indeed.” They still hadn’t got to the underlying factor of why that could be the case though.

Senses, yes, she had those. She remembered the song they used to sing at day camp about the senses and almost let out a giggle. She knew that song was going to be stuck in her head for the rest of the week.

After thinking a few more moments and waiting her turn to answer, she raised her hand. "Sir, we have different regions on our tongues that taste different things. One part for sweet, one for salty, bitter, and sour." She paused a moment. "I also agree with Skylar. The way we taste comes from more than one sense. My dad, he's a pastry chef, he says people taste with their eyes." That always sounded funny to her when she was little. She would picture people putting their eyes on the food to see if it tasted good before eating it.

How would they be bewitching their senses? And, what was in that pot up front? She hoped they wouldn't be made to test out what ever that potion was on themselves.

SPOILER!!: Scarlett

Either way...what was the point? Not that it really mattered to her. She was just here to practice for NEWTs at this point, lets be real.

She raised her hand. "I believe this is another sort of taste bud that has been studied more recently, that gives us that...savory sort of flavor? In addition to the other ones already brought up," she added, since she didn't think anyone had touched on that while she had been scribbling down notes.

“THANK you, Emmelyn!” Finally! A first year had done what the older students had not – give him the answer he was looking for. And Scarlett had soon followed up with the final piece. He jumped down off the table, and swooped round to the blackboard.

“Our taste buds are known to detect several tastes: sweet, salty, bitter, sour, and savoury…also known as umami.” He wrote the five tastes down as he spoke them aloud. “There might be more. But these five have been scientifically confirmed.” He put the chalk down, and brushed his hands of the dust.

Time for the next question, although, honestly he had low expectations after the first one. “The miracle berry is a mundane plant that can manipulate our tastes – does anyone know which in particular, or how?” He looked over the class. “And those of you who don’t…what example foods can you think of which might be helpful to test our different taste sensors?”

Zoryn had been here the whoooooooooooooole time, for the record. She, however, was in an awful mood and didn't want to be attending classes. Honestly, she was trying to skip this lesson, but now that she was being mad (AGAINST HER WILL, MIND YOU) to attend remedial lessons... Surely Professor Noble was now paying extra attention to her. It was the WORST thing her parents had ever done.

And now on top of having to attend STUPID lessons that she didn't want to go to, she also had to sit ALL BY HERSELF because Faith and Sylvie were HORRIBLE friends.

This was the WORST YEAR OF HER LIFE.

What was the question again?

DID IT MATTER?

No.

Zoryn didn't care, she wanted to LEEEEAAAAAVEEEEEE.

What?? She had answered something correctly in potions class? She almost couldn’t believe it. She would have to remember to thank her father the next time she spoke with him. He would be proud of her.

She carefully jotted down the flavor zones on her parchment and focused her attention back on Professor Noble. His next question sparked something in her mind. She remembered talking about the miracle berry, but she couldn’t remember exactly what it was.

“Sir, the miracle berry can switch how things taste. It’s either makes something that’s sour taste sweet, or something sweet taste sour. I can’t remember which way.” She was sure it was those two and it seemed to her it was the sour to sweet since it was her dad that had talked about it. No one would want sour tasting pastries. He’d be much more interested in something being sweet. “I don’t know how it works, maybe something in the juice of the berry reacts with what you put it on.”

Now, things they could test out, she knew those. “Lemons are sour, sugar is sweet, coffee is bitter, and salt is salty. I'm not sure what would work for umami.” She was definitely going to have to thank her father for today. She knew her answers might not be exactly what Professor Noble was looking for, but she at least had some idea after so many years helping in the family bakery.

Ronan's feelings had been teeter-tottering between grouchy sarcasm and silent contemplation lately, thanks to recent events. Unfortunately, grouchy sarcasm had managed to correspond with the king of grouch's class. While he had managed to keep those sarcastic remarks to himself so far, someone had finally said something that made the sarcasm spew forth. "Oh yes, salt is salty. Why don't we just go swallow a whole bunch of the stuff. Start gasping for water. That sounds like a party right there," he deadpanned. Merlin!

Now the miracle berry. Something he knew a bit about, but was somewhat weary of. "The miracle berry makes sour foods taste sweet because of a glycoprotein it contains called miraculin. The miraculin binds to the sweetness receptors on our tongues and reacts with the acids in the sour food to produce this effect. However, when heated above 100 degrees Celcius, the miracle berry losses this effect." Thank you, Aunt Mariane for all the cooking lessons over the years. And for teaching him about that fruit too, though he wasn't quite sure about using it. Felt like cheating.

"As for taste testing, a better alternative to pure salt would be a saltine cracker and for umami, you could use a broth of some sort or soy sauce." The last bit he wasn't sure if you could very much of in Britain.

Daehyun was gaping. Not that obvious and open-mouthed, but he was just awed by Emmalyn's knowledge, as well as others', while he was just... out of it. He was awake, sure, and he was focused, but these things were beyond his area of expertise.

... if he even had such a thing.

He was beginning to regret he sat in the front, because he knew his silence wouldn't go unobserved by professor Noble, but he supposed there was no way out now. If he was lucky enough, they'd move on to the actual potion making soon. Now that he was pretty good at. Decent, at least. Not causing explosions.

That was good enough, right?

To the professor's questions, again, he had no answer. He'd never even heard of that miracle berry before, and knew even less about other foods that would help manipulate their tastes. He just knew that oranges tasted awful after brushing his teeth, but he doubted professor Noble would be interested in talking about toothpaste.

Oh. That was what he had been looking for? Ah well... Kye still felt like she had contributed and that was enough for her today! Of course, as the year grew on, she had to think about her NEWTs next year and how she really needed to continue with at least decent marks from now on. Only because of these thoughts did she even bother with trying to contribute to the next part of the discussion. It seemed that Emmalyn had been able to give examples for most tastes... although Kye couldn't help but squint in confusion when her example for salty food was just... salt itself. Technically she wasn't wrong, but surely the professor meant something else? Hmm.. Kye had a small smile and raised eyebrows once Ronan seemed to uh... flip his lid just a teeny tiny bit. At least he added something after? There was no need to call people out like that, Ronan! Be nice! she shook her head disapprovingly.

Once he was done speaking, Kye raised her hand. "Sir, I believe meat is a good example of savory. Like if you think about biting into a juicy steak, or fish if you prefer. It makes my mouth water..." The steak of course. Fish was all fine too, but a juicy steak was the key to Kye's heart. Forever. As for her other examples... she listed them off on her fingers, looking up in thought. "Sweet, chocolate. Sour, several candy coatings come to mind of course. Not to mention things that can turn sour, like dairy." Ugh. Gross. The smell of anything that had turned was enough to make you sick. "Uhmm forrr bitter..." Kye had to think on this one because her first thought was also coffee. "Well there's also bitter chocolate." Yes she had used chocolate twice, WHAT OF IT? "And salty... Mmmm pretzels are the best! French fries are usually made pretty salty as well." Not as salty as Ronan's attitude though, that's for sure.

Harriet blinked as Ronan was suddenly being sarcastic about something someone had said, specifically one of the hufflepuffs. Was there any need for that? Yes. The answer was kind of obvious, but there was no need to be rude. She wanted to say something, but the girl just bit her tongue. No point getting into a argument. She just didn't see the need for sarcasm. The girl had said a legitimate answer. Salt was salty. That was the point of it. So it made very much sense to her. Though they probably wouldn't want to go around eating lots of salt, it would work very well to test that specific taste bud. But Hattie remained quiet on the matter. Maybe Professor Noble would comment on the sarcasm. That would be justice right?

Now to try and put together a good answer. She made some notes, making sure she got down the correct information. Who knew if she might need this information for her NEWTS next year. She hadn't heard of that berry before, so she figured that she could just answer some foods instead. "Honey could be used as a food item to test the sweet taste buds. It is a natural sugar, and therefore sweet. She said, as she popped her hand into the air. Honey was yummy too, especially on toast. Now she was thinking about toast... maybe for supper later.

Okay, to Natalie's surprised, she was beginning to find this lesson moderately interesting. She liked food, so there was that, but there was also the idea that something could manipulate how something tastes... and THAT was kinda cool. Maybe it would make her like like brussel sprouts. Then her mum's side dishes wouldn't go to waste.

She didn't know how it would work, but how it could be tested... she had an idea and raised her hand. "It might help to eat something that has a strong or, uh.. distinct taste. Like... onions or garlic or something." Two things that she did not normally eat by themselves.

Oops. So Skylar completely knew that she'd been referencing flavours, not taste. But it was kind of interesting how with one statement, she got nearly half the class off on the wrong tangent ... Carefully jotting down the five different tastes, she glanced up from her parchment on the next question.

About a miracle berry that manipulated their tastes? She blinked over at Emmalyn who seemed well conversed on this subject matter. Uh, what was up with the bitterness that she detected in Ronan's answer? Surely he wasn't still salty about his little find-himself-a-valentine event? Moving on though, she found her mouth watering as Kye just HAD to talk about a juicy steak. Really, Kye?

Also, no one mentioned the name of the fruit, which Skylar was ninety-nine percent sure she read an article about that over the summer when she was just doing some light reading. "Wait, are you talking about Synsepalum dulcificum? It's got some protein in it, um, ... miraculin... it like binds with the tate buds and acts as a sweetness inducer when it reacts with acids."

As far as examples of foods, well, her peers pretty much had that covered, but "Anything with a strong flavor would work well. Like, uh ... Wasabi." Also, umami sounded Japanese and Skylar had to remind herself that it was to signify savory.

She caught his attention on her when she looked up between notes. What? Then he moved on and Cass tried to brush it off as him looking at everyone. At least the ones that hadn’t answered his question. Still wasn’t going to make her answer. Besides…given the response to the young girl…Emmelyn, the potions master had gotten the response he had been looking for from the class. The seventh year jotted down the important pieces of information given the class before following the move onto the next question posed.

Cassie opted to answer, thinking for a moment on what foods she would pick. A few had already been mentioned, the Ravenclaw quick to find replacements. “Limes for sour…” since lemons had been given. “strawberries for sweet and peanuts for salty. Rhubard for bitter and…” Um…what would be savory? She bit her lip thinking before eventually adding “beef stew for savory.” Something cooked with plenty of spice and flavor and heartwarming.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

There, much better.

Jessa took a few, much steadier breaths while the class discussion continued around her. You never really appreciated the work your lungs did until they started acting a little wonky.

The Ravenclaw replaced the inhaler in her pocket, no real haste or inclination to continue responding. That one just now may have been the first in over two months that the girl opted to say anything during the question portion of the lesson and she wasn't entirely sure it was worth it to continue. The more she spoke was the more aware of her presence Professor Noble would be and so far she'd done what she considered a good job of cruising below his radar.

Bad enough she had to slip in by him just now, the man wasn't likely to forget that within the hour and today was one of those days where she didn't wanna hear "Prefect Eagle" in his particular brand of stern voice.

Jessa pulled for a piece of parchment and instead began to scribble everything down.

Sitting at the back, remaining quiet, if this didn't make her invisible, not even a disillusionment charm would.

Her face flushed with embarrassment at his comment. She could feel the warmth creeping up her cheeks and her eyes filling with tears. She blinked several times, trying to force the tears back, and let her hair fall to somewhat hide her face. She wasn't sure why her answer was being made fun of. She had done her best to answer the question and it was the first thing that had come to mind.

Wanting nothing more but to melt under her table, Emmalyn slouched down in an attempt to become invisible. She knew that going to potions class would be bad, but she thought the horrible parts would be from Professor Noble, not another student.

Kirk was here of course, as he listened to what was going on. Hm. The Captain thought about grapefruit in terms of bitter foods, but it had a sort of tangy-sweetness into it as well. Maybe not a perfect example to mention if it was going to be able to be listed in more than one group.

... Suddenly he was getting hungry. Thinking about some of Mel's snacks would be good right about now. Looking quite studious, Kirk jotted down some foods he considered before attempting to group them in either categories.

Zoryn was here, so that was something. He gave her an expectant look though; she actually needed to do something in class if she wanted him to send decent feedback to her parents and prevent further remedial classes. As was…well, being physically present was about the best he could say.

Emmalyn was doing well indeed today. Noble nodded at the first year encouragingly. “Makes sour taste sweet,” he confirmed. “But no, it doesn’t react with the food itself.” He’d wait to see if anyone else knew how it worked, before explaining himself. He was about to say something about her examples, when the Gryffindor happened.
SPOILER!!: Ronan

Very rapidly, Noble’s temper flared. “Not as salty as you, apparently.” He scowled, which only widened as it sounded like the boy was regurgitating the textbook. Had he asked about the effect of temperature on the berry? No. He hadn’t.

“10 points from Gryffindor for your sarcasm and poor attitude, and I expect you to apologise to Emmalyn immediately.”

SPOILER!!: Kye

Turning to return to the board to start writing up their suggestions, Noble nodded at Kye. “Steak would work, yes.” Unfortunately his budget wasn’t high enough to accommodate a good sirloin or three though. And her answer for sour was on the right track, but still wrong enough to cause grumbling to happen. “Not just any gone off sour dairy, since that'll make you ill, most likely...yoghurt would work though.”

On actually putting chalk to the board, however, he changed his mind about writing a list of food. They should be taking notes of their own, if they were paying attention, and the next part of class would cover it in more detail if they missed any.

He nodded at her question, surprised somewhat by her knowledge of the Latin name. He didn’t really recall her as one of the more avid herbologists in the class. Regardless, she was correct in how the miraculin functioned. “Correct. At neutral pH, the miraculin just blocks the sensors, but in the presence of acids, it can activate the sweet sensors when it comes into contact with the acids that make foods sour.”

The others it appeared, were too lazy to think about the flavours of what they ate. Since they were all functioning in his lesson, he assumed they consumed a variety of foods, anyways. Grumble grumble. He might have picked on them individually, had he not looked at the clock and realised it was time to move on.

“Right then,” he called them to attention. “For the rest of class, we’re going to be conducting a couple of experiments. Firstly, we’re going to go the mundane route, and try the miracle berry we’ve just talked about. As Emmalyn said, it causes sour foods to taste sweet. When I say go, come get a miracle berry from the front.” He held up the bowl of berries to show them, the bright red fruits shining under the light orbs he’d installed in the classroom at the beginning of the year. “I’d prefer for you all to try them yourselves, but otherwise you may work in a group with someone who’s willing to explain what they’re experiencing for you.” If they really kicked up a fuss, he had a contingency plan, but it wouldn’t be half as fun.

“On the side are a variety of foods for you to try. I’d recommend sour foods like the lemon and vinegar in the first instance, but you’re welcome to try the effect on other foods too.” He flicked his wand, and the catering trays were uncovered to show a variety of foods, several of them already mentioned. As well as the lemon and a few types of vinegar, there were radishes, grapes, rhubarb, pickles, hot sauce, dark chocolate, soy sauce, honey, marmite on bread, horseradish, apple sauce…all ready prepared in small taster-sized portions. Lunch was right after class, so no need to fill up here. “Try the foods without the effect of the miracle berry first, so you can really compare the difference. You have 20 minutes before we’ll be moving on.”

Why weren't they moving already? "GO!"

ooc: It's experiment time! Go ahead and try the miracle berries, with one/some/all of the foods on offer. Any hint of sourness in the taste will become sweet. I'll be moving on in 48 hours or so, but we'll be around for questions etc in the meantime

If people thought he was salty before, it was nothing compared to how he felt now that Skylar had gotten credit for basically regurgitating his answer (though shortened it was). He thought the professor would appreciate some good sarcasm anyway, considering he liked to throw it out. As for the Hufflepuff, surely she should know by now that eating a bunch of salt wasn't a good idea. If she hadn't, it was her fault, plus she now knew. Long story short, no he was not going to apologize, though he did feel slightly bad about making her cry (even though she cried about everything it seemed).

It was all of this running through Ronan's head that caused what happened next. Yes, he did approach the table as asked and picked up a lemon. But, instead of putting the sour citrus in his mouth, he flung it across the room at Professor Noble. "Ooops?"

Sigh.

Experiments, okay.

Daehyun would normally be nervous when experimenting with foods, but since the miracle berry seemed to make everything sour taste sweet, he didn't mind it. He supposed that after trying them the mundane way, they'd be brewing a potion with similar effects, so it was all the more exciting.

After walking up to grab a berry, he tried it with a slice of lemon first, his face scrunching up at the bitter taste, followed by the berry, which... didn't taste as bad. Actually, it was beginning to taste... much better. Miracle berry indeed. Then, just out of curiosity, he tried the berry with pickles, and it just tasted plain weird. An odd sweetness to it, but weird.

Okay... Kye wasn't super excited about eating some of the foods being offered, but she also felt like she couldn't do the experiment properly unless she experienced it herself. As the foods were uncovered, she tried to get a good look at what was available for them to try. Lemon... yea sure, grapes no problem, mmm chocolate! Kye got up and helped herself to the different options. She grimaced a bit when looking at the horseradish as this was absolutely disgusting to her, but she took some anyway. Who knew if the berry could actually make a miracle out of that. Kye had just returned to her seat, looking around to see if anyone who was afraid to try the foods wanted to join her, when Ronan the Grump did something to completely shock her. Kye stared with her mouth wide open as he threw the lemon in Professor Noble's direction. Was he serious right now?? What was his problem today? Still wide eyed, she stared at her plate, back at Ronan, and the professor. She was sure a detention was heading his way. She had to wonder what exactly was causing him to act up so much lately. Sarcasm was one thing, but attacking a teacher? She didn't know what to think or do. Should she start the experiment? Well... might as well have a little chocolate now that the show was about to really start. Kye took a bite of the dark chocolate and kept her eyes down. Oh, Ronan...

Rylee may not have answered either of the questions so far but that wasn't at all because she didn't know the answer. She had chosen to write down note instead, blue eyes fixed on her parchment as she wrote in a bright purple ink. Note taking had become even more important to her lately, especially in this class.

Having her house lose points wasn't a huge deal to her but the reason behind it was. Whether it had been intentional or not, making someone cry didn't sit well with her. Rylee crinkled her nose and the moment they were told to go taste the miracle berry she rose to her feet. She moved alongside Emmalyn and gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze. "Are you okay?" she asked quietly wanting to cheek on her friend. "Come up with me and we can try the foods together?" Surely Professor Noble wouldn't mind this just so they were doing their work.

"Ooops?"

Sigh.
He surveyed the classroom as people started moving to get their berries and foods to try, his gaze stern as he looked for where problems might arise. So far, all seemed to be going well with the change of pace in class. He gave little nod to Rylee going over to work with Emmalyn, and couldn't help but smirk as he saw the reactions on Daehyun's face as he tried the pickle.

Valkyrie's look gave him cause for concern though, and he followed it over first to Ronan, and then to the lemon that had just landed in a splattered mess on his robes. Maybe he should have predicted a retaliation, given the boy's attitude in previous classes. Alec was a pain, but at least he was only a disruption to himself and his own success.

Vanishing the lemon, Noble snarled. "Get out of my classroom." There was a finality to his tone; the Potions Professor was not going to have the boy ruining today's class for everyone else. Emmalyn had not said anything about trying a whole spoonful of salt; had she, Noble would have easily clarified that a small pinch would be plenty on the tongue to test the salty taste sensors. And maybe if Ronan had kept his mouth shut about that, or at least said it in a more constructive manner, he would have gotten proper credit on how the miraculin of the berry worked.

As it was, Noble would be thinking hard about whether the Lion would be allowed back into this classroom to continue his NEWTs studies. He'd noted an apology hadn't been given to Emmalyn, and he was expecting one for the gunk on his robes now too.

After taking a few moments to settle herself, and giving off a slight grin after hearing that Mr. Salty had lost house points, Emmalyn refocused herself on the day’s lesson. She updated her notes and was eager to start trying foods. Before she had a chance to get up, she felt a hand touch her shoulder. “I’m okay, Thanks for asking, Rylee.” She smiled at her classmate. “My mother always said I was the emotional one. She was right. It seems I cry about everything.” It was true. She was a cryer. Happy, sad, mad, excited, it didn’t matter, she would probably cry.

“I’d love to work with you. Plus, it will be neat to see if things taste the same to both of us.” She grabbed her notebook and pencil. Just as she was about to suggest starting with the sour foods, she saw Ronan throw something at Professor Noble. “That wasn’t the best idea.” She whispered to Rylee.

“Would you like to start with the sour items first? Then we can work our way to the chocolate!!” Her tears had almost completely dried up and her smile had wiped away any distress from her face.

A lesson where they got to taste food? Professor Noble was still completely and utterly terrifying, but maybe this class wouldn't be so bad after all. Max moved to the front of the classroom to help himself to one of these miracle berry things... and then he moved to the table where all the foods had been placed.

Obviously, he was going to go for chocolate. He studied the rest of the goodies for a moment and decided he'd give lemon a try too. Lemon's were super sour and he wanted to see if this miracle berry really could make the sourness go sweet.

Back at his desk, completely oblivious to the classroom drama, Max went for the chocolate first. It was dark chocolate and very bitter. Yummy but bitter. He let it melt on his tongue for a moment and then popped in the berry.

... and it worked!! "SWEEEET!!!" Literally.
