Noah opened his textbook and read through the ingredients of the Noxious Potion, wrinkling his nose in disgust. Sulfur...TROLL DUNG and two cups of those, no less. There was even a side-note telling them to try and not pass out. Well, that's exactly what the potion was about, right? Noxious. It's supposed to be poisonous and or unpleasant.

"Aside from distraction," which by the way he had mentioned earlier, "I suppose this can also be used as a trap. From intruders and such." Noah said, lowering his hand. "Or it can also be used to subdue certain creatures...or even plants if they are resistant to wand magic, especially if they are massive. I mean, this potion contains sulphur and other acidic ingredients that can penetrate not just the body, but can spread in the air as well. It can cover so much ground, like a slow-burn kind of thing." Again, interesting stuff, but he just can't comprehend why he'd have this potion in his person.

The use of the Noxious Potion seemed quite clear in the name to him, and Evan thought Ash had defined it quite well. Noxious could technically mean harmful or poisonous, but either way would sufficiently distract anyone from being able to pursue while they just... slipped away. Considering he had nothing else to add, instead he focused on the ingredients and how to make the potion - all the while also thinking about the fact Professor Hernandez had said they would be testing this potion.

He quite hoped the effects were just on the side of harmful and made the kids... dizzy or something.

"It would help you if you faced a group of attackers, too," Violet added. "The smoke and fumes would affect more people than you could fight off at once with a wand."

The seventh year flipped her textbook’s pages until she came across the potion. “The smoke the potion emits,’’ Claudine began before lowering her hand. “It can be used to obscure an attacker’s vision. Hopefully it’s thick enough…”

"That is one way of distracting them...although the smoke is probably the least distracting aspect of the potion, once someone is exposed to it," Javier pointed out with a small smirk. No one seemed to really care about their surroundings when they felt like they were going to be sick or pass out.

She heard someone else flipping through pages and turned her gaze to her right to see the Slytherin doing the same thing. Claudine was smart. And Lisa prided herself on being smart so Lisa followed Claudine’s lead and flipped through her textbook to get to the exact page.

Her eyebrows raised when she read the text. That sounded dangerous but oh hey what was this essence of insanity? Hmmm… one to come back to later naturally… She read the instructions and then paused. “It could give you a quick escape if you’re in a pickle! Maybe even knock out your opponent for a moment or so?” she offered.

"Usually it doesn't render anyone unconscious, but they'll be too busy gagging on the fumes and will be incapacitated that way," Javier explained with a grin.

"Good thinking, Miss Fox. While the smoke isn't necessarily TOXIC, it can make you quite sick until you escape from the fumes," Javier explained. So not toxic in the sense that you'd need an antidote to prevent dying...but it certainly wouldn't be pleasant.

She understood that it was important for its practicality, but if she ever needed a potion, she could just buy one, ask Teddy to brew it for her, or follow a recipe herself! So she just looked up, taking a break from her notebook, and nodded in agreement.

Kinsay James was being...uncharacteristically quiet today. Or maybe not. It was hard to tell with that one - Javier often found most Gryffindors to be super chatty, but compared to him, EVERYONE was chatty.

"It certainly could. You could set something to open a vial of potion if an intruder trips a wire - and once it starts seeping out the noxious gas, it works VERY quickly," he explained.

Another one who was being awful quiet. Perhaps they were just thinking of all the ways they could weaponize this potion?

"Ah, good thinking Miss Blackthorne. It's certainly a better way to ward off a larger group of people than some spells," he nodded in agreement.

"As many of you pointed out, the Noxious Potion is an excellent self defense tool because the literal purpose of it is to make someone sick. It won't poison them or cause any lasting damage, but once you are exposed to it, you'll feel dizzy, nauseous, and eventually you'll be gagging uncontrollably. The effects generally don't last more than a few minutes even with exposure to the largest batches - but it's still unpleasant and takes a while to fully dissipate in the air and work its way out of your system once inhaled. As many of you mentioned, it's a brilliant way to take down many people at once, and buy you time to make a quick escape."

Javier waved his wand and the table in the front of the room was suddenly filled with the ingredients for the potion that he'd had magically concealed during their lecture. He'd pre-measured most of the items and created a tray containing all the necessary ingredients for each student. Each one contained a large jug of milk, small little vials and cups filled with various items such as armadillo bile and doxy eggs - and one whole lemon. The trays also had one very important piece of equipment - a simple cloth face mask.

"Now, brewing this potion is relatively simple, but it isn't exactly pleasant on the nostrils," he explained. "These masks are more comfortable than clunky gas masks that you've seen in other labs, but charmed to keep most of the stink out. Nothing can QUITE get rid of that mountain troll dung smell, though," he added with a small frown. The masks would prevent anyone from getting terribly sick, however - once you put them on, it wasn't any worse than some of the barns out in their Care of Magical Creatures lessons. "And don't worry - the potion doesn't release any lethal fumes until it's been fully prepared and you cast your activation charm on it."

"Head on up and grab a tray of ingredients. You may head back to your tables and begin the brewing process," he said before standing aside, signaling that they could start coming up and grabbing their trays. As he did so, he waved his wand again and the potion recipe scribbled itself on the board, although the recipe was also in their books if they preferred to follow along that way.

Procedure
* Clean cauldon (scourgify)

* start cauldron on low fire (incendio)
* Crack each doxy egg and add to cauldron, stirring once counter-clockwise after each egg
* Put gloves on, then take each gem of sulfur and crumble it with your hands before adding to the cauldron
* Measure out the 2 ounces of armadillo bile while vigorously stirring the potion clockwise until it is in a full spin
* Add the armadillo bile
* Wait for the spinning to stop on its own
* Spoon the 4 cups of flobberworm mucus into the potion with a wooden spoon
* Add the cup of whale oil from the side, drizzling it in slowly
* Using a nose clamp to avoid most of the smell, add the troll dung as quickly as possible (note: try not to throw up into the potion)
* Juice a lemon into mortar, adding a handful of poppy seeds once the juice is collected and crush everything together
* Add the lemon-poppy mixture into potion
* Cast “Dilapsus” on the potion, using a brisk jabbing motion
* Quickly, using baster, fill a 10 mL flask with potion and seal it shut with a cork, or seal it shut using magic if you prefer
* Vanish the remainder of the potion, preferably before it starts giving off gas (Evanesco)

OOC: Alright, this is actually the MINI activity, and tomorrow night I will open the MAIN activity so you have the remainder of the lesson to complete both. As Javier said, the masks he has given them will prevent anyone from getting sick - they can still smell it through the mask and will probably be a bit grossed out, but no getting sick, passing out, gagging, etc. should be happening while they're brewing. As I said you have about 24 hours to get started, I'll move us along at that time but you'll still have plenty of time to complete both activities!

Beside her, she heard Lisa flipping the pages of her own textbook but thought little of it since Hernandez had asked them to turn to the page with that particular potion. Still, she’d have been flattered to know that the Ravenclaw thought of her as smart. Claudine nodded once at Hernandez after providing her answer. She’d just been offering one possibility that not many persons would have mentioned after they read what the potion actually did. At least Valentina agreed with her.

The effects of the potion were not flattering at all. She supposed it would be a lot better to work with this type of mask. Hernandez truly thought of everything while prepping his lessons. Claudine headed up to collect a tray. Back at her workstation, she began the process, making a mental note to keep an eye out on Lisa. That girl was super hyper and the last thing they needed was for some accident to occur.

“Scourgify.” Once her cauldron and the other equipment she’d be using were cleaned, the milk was tipped into the cauldron. Claudine’s suspicion was that Hernandez had measured out the precise amount that they needed. At least in her case there was that correct amount. “Incendio.” A low fire going on the burner? You bet.Now for the doxy eggs.

Violet was not looking forward to working with troll dung, with or without a mask, so she quickly got to work on the potion to take her mind off it. "Scourgify!" she cast matter of factly--she'd done it so many times by now, it was almost second nature. Carefully she half filled her cauldron with the milk (was that exactly halfway? should she measure it? or was she obsessing over it now?) Deciding that she definitely was obsessing, Violet moved on and deftly cast an Incendio to create a low fire.

Still trying not to think about troll dung, she methodically cracked each doxy egg exactly in the middle and stirred the cauldron one counter-clockwise stir...

Valentina got up to collect her tray. Brewing potions always stressed her out on some level - but she felt determined to do it properly. She quickly read the recipe as she put her mask on, hoping this will go well.

She cleaned the cauldron first with a simply Scourgify before adding the milk slowly, making sure it was exactly halfway.. um, might be a bit more but that shouldn't be a problem. She casted Incendio next, the cauldron on low fire now. Next, she added each egg and stirred the contents counter clockwise.

Dizzy, nauseous and gagging? He certainly couldn't wait to try that out in front of all his peers. Thankfully that step was very far from fruition, causing Evan to even briefly consider delaying out his process in order to avoid it. A nice idea in theory, but he had to much pride in his schoolwork to ever intentionally sacrifice results.

Standing with the others to collect a tray, he grabbed one before carefully carrying it back to his spot. Securely fastening his mask to his face as well, Evan propped open his potions book on the recipe they were working on in order to follow precisely. He pulled out his cauldron, getting it set up properly before casting a quick "scourgify!", ensuring it was nice and clean, before beginning to pour in milk. He made sure he was pouring slowly in order to eyeball when it was at the half way mark. Once there, he put the milk back and pulled the Doxy's eggs closer to him.

Again, he raised his wand casting a quick "Incendio!" to get his cauldron on low temperature. From there, he reached for the first egg, cracking it gently against the counter top in order to open it into the beginning of his potion. One egg meant one counter clock wise stir. He then repeated that process again, and again, and again, and one last time to complete five eggs, each one separated by the necessary counter clock wise stir.

With those added, Evan reached for his gloves and slipped them onto his hands before grabbing for his sulfur gems. He used his hands to roll the gems between the two, causing them to break up into much finer particles so that he could add all 10 grams in. Next was the stirring. Evan wasn't quite sure how vigorous he was supposed to be with the potion, but putting in his metal stirrer after having measured out his armadillo bile, he went at it. It took a minute for him to actually get a good spin going, but once his arm started to ache a little he decided that was probably fast enough. He poured in the armadillo bile as well, before stepping back to let it do it's thing.

He wasn't great at patience or standing still and doing nothing whilst waiting for the next step, so he went ahead and spooned up one large wooden spoonful of his flobberworm mucus. He didn't add it yet though, as he noticed his potion was in whirlpool mode. Another minute or so of just... holding the spoon, the potion finally settled and the Ravenclaw was able to start adding spoon after spoon after spoon into the cauldron until all 4 cups had been added.

A slow drizzle of the whale oil into the mixture immediately followed, and far too soon it was the step he had been eying and dreading getting to. Troll dung. Lifting his mask for a moment, Ev secured the nose clamp before also adding in spoonfuls of the troll dung as quickly as possible. He'd tried to hold his breath in order to not take any of the scents, but he started to run out of breath before he could finish up. He gagged a little bit, but thankfully nothing came from it and he was able to take a brief step away in order to take in a deep breath. Crushing lemons was a far welcome task after the prior, and he went at it - getting as much as he could from the fruit and turning any pulp into as fine as possible, before adding his handful of poppy seeds and taking to the mortor again.

Once this task was also completed, it was added to the mixture and the wand was pulled out once again. He made his jabbing motion, speaking the needed incantation, “Dilapsus”. He could only hope he'd completed everything satisfactorily. Grabbing his flask and baster, Evan quickly filled it up and topped it off. He then wasted no time getting rid of the rest of the potion with a quick, "Evanesco!" Last thing he wanted was to have to sit there and smell the potion. He kept his mask and the nose plug on anyways though, just so he didn't have to smell any of the others either for the time being.

After Javier watched the majority of students get started on their potion, he cleared his throat. "Once you're done with your potion, I'd like to introduce the main activity to you all," he said with a grin. He raised his wand and waved it a few times - causing the back of the classroom to magically expand out about 10 yards. A moment later, all the junk he'd had piled up in the back spread out and created a playing field of sorts. The foam rocks, giant crates, and barrels all situated themselves evenly across the now expanded space.

"When you're done, take that 10mL vial that you put your finished potion in and head to the back of the classroom. Your fellow students will be doing the same, and it is your job to throw your vial at them and attempt to disarm them with your Noxious Potion. Now, this small amount will NOT make anyone sick to the point that you will need the hospital wing," he added quickly. "It WILL make you dizzy however, and if you don't move away from the cloud fast enough, you may find yourself gagging."

"Use the barriers to try and avoid the potion - but if you're within 5 feet of the vial when it explodes, you'll find yourselves experiencing the effects," he explained. "There's a protective charm over your work stations, so if you haven't finished your potion, don't feel like you need to rush - you'll be protected from the residual fumes so you can focus on working!"

"You should ONLY be using your Noxious Potion, no wands and no playing dirty, you hear?" he added with a small smirk. He'd be there to witness it all, though, in case anyone got any ideas. "Once you're done with your potion, feel free to head on over!"

OOC: Onto the main activity! As I said previously, CATCH UP WITH THE BREWING is totally OK and expected! You do not need to do more than two posts for BOTH parts. You can do one long post for the brewing, and another long post for the main activity if you would like. Or take your time and spread it out over multiple posts! You have until November 21st at 9 PM CDT to finish things up.

A few more quick notes before we get going:

-DO NOT RP for the character you are aiming for. Points will not be determined based on whether or not you make contact, so please allow the other RPer to determine if your hit was successful or not
-As Javier stated, this small amount of potion should NOT be making anyone seriously sick, even the most sensitive of stomachs. So please, don't get too crazy with your RPs. If you decide NOT to follow this advice, understanding IC consequences may happen including house point loss or detention, etc

The first doxy egg was cracked, added to the cauldron then the contents were stirred once counter clockwise as required. The steps were repeated four times for the remaining eggs. Next, gloves were donned and the sulphur gems gathered in her hands. Claudine made sure that her hands were directly over the cauldron before applying pressure to crumble the ten grams of sulphur into the mix.

Two ounces of armadillo bile did not take long to be weighed. Her attention became divided while doing that and stirring the contents of the cauldron in a clockwise direction until they were spinning and spinning. Once that was achieved, Claudine added the measured out armadillo bile. She watched as the bile got mixed with the other ingredients on its own, and gradually the spinning began to ease.

Once the spinning halted all together, with her wooden spoon, four cups of slimy flobberworm mucus were gingerly put in. Holding the cup of whale oil close to the side of the cauldron and against the rim, Claudine allowed the oil to slowly drizzle down. Then came the part she was really dreading. Now, she worked with magical creatures everyday thanks to Williamson and now Paszek, and she was quite used to the foulest of smells here at the Hogwarts barn. But troll dung? Goodness, that was on another level completely. Claudine was grateful for the nose clamp which she made full use of while adding the two cups. Even just looking at the dung grossed her out. Thankfully it was over soon.

Next up, the lemon was juiced in the mortar before a handful of poppy seeds were thrown in. Using the pestle, the Slytherin crushed it all. Once the ingredients were well crushed and mixed, the mortar was emptied into the cauldron. “Dilapsus.’’ Cue that brisk, jabbing movement. Working quickly but with precision, she added to a ten ml flask the same amount of her concoction. Using magic, the flask was sealed.

“Evanesco.” The remainder of the potion vanished in an instant.

Expertly putting her gloves on, Violet proceeded to methodically crush the sulphur gems between her hands and add them to her cauldron. next she measured out the armadillo bile and proceeded to stir the solution in her cauldron into a clockwise vortex before pouring the bile in. As she was waiting for her solution to stop spinning, she heard Professor Jernandez giving out the next instructions.

Violet was so shocked she nearly forgot to spoon in her flobberworm mucus. Was he kidding!?! A grand melee with noxious potions was the last thing this school needed this year. She just hoped she didn't turn out to be allergic to this potion like that one Healer Poppy had used last year--she was just finally starting to get over that. She mused glumly about the foolhardiness of grownups as she drizzled a cup of whale oil into her potion.

‘Rocks’, crates, barrels and a wider space at the back of the room.

Interesting.

The activity… not so much. Claudine had her misgivings about having other potions thrown on her but didn’t mind throwing it on others. At least she knew her potion was brewed correctly but could she say the same for her classmates?

The girl, with her vial in hand, headed towards the back of the class. She sized up the surroundings as she did so. Was she trying to work up a strategy? Yes, of course. She’d just take up position close to this barrel located all the way at the back. If anything, she could always duck behind it and hoped that it didn’t explode along with any vials.

After waiting a bit for more of her classmates to join her, Claudine decided it was time for her vial to fly so she drew it back in her right hand then released the vials towards one of the others.

With his potion completed, Evan headed with the rest of his peers who were also ready towards the back of the classroom. Once they were back there, even if there were others who were not yet ready, he had opted to try to find himself a more defensive position. A good idea in theory, but it was too bad that in the hunt for the best spot, he forgot to actually be on the defense.

He didn't even see the vial leave Claudine's hand as he finally found a foam rock that seemed like it would provide enough protection. The next thing he knew, the gas was within his vicinity and he couldn't stop himself from gagging as he tripped and tried to scurry further away from it. That was foul. He could see how stronger doses could make people entirely useless.

Which was pretty much the equivalency of him currently. Once he was out of the gas, he thought he could risk throwing his own potion as well but another gag as he reared his hand back and let go had him... entirely unaware of where it was actually headed.

Oops.

Hiding Taking cover behind her barrel, Claudine heard her vial explode. Or was it someone else’s? She didn’t lift her head to find out. Not right then at least. It didn’t make sense to do so when there were other vials exploding as well. She would wait until the sounds of vials breaking stopped then peek out…

Which she did sometime later.

Unfortunately for her, she had bad timing. One of the vials {Evan’s} happened to explode in very close proximity to her. Ugh. Almost immediately she felt dizzy and sick. The seventh year ducked back down behind her barrel, bracing her back to it and holding her head to steady the revolving world around her. Yeah. She officially hated this potion. She was just going to sit here for the rest of the lesson, thanks.

Violet had been dreading this part of the brewing process, which was probably why she was taking rather a long time about it, but there was no avoiding doing it now that the class was moving on. Clamping on the nose clamp as tightly as she could stand it, she got out the Mountain Troll dung (Great Merlin, two whole cups of it!) and began hastily adding it into her potion, trying not to retch in the meantime. Then she cast a quick Evanesco on the cups to get rid of any residue and turned to get her mortar and the lemon, hoping the process of juicing would take her mind off the smell. Once that was done, she mushed it together (Don't think of the smell, Don't think of the smell...) and added it into the potion as fast as she could.

The only thing remaining was to cast the spell:
"Dilapsus" she exclaimed, jabbing viciously with her wand. Finally, done! She hurried to fill her flask with the stuff and sealed it with both a cork and with magic (not wanting to take any chances). Then she vanished the rest of the mess in her cauldron--"Evanesco" and sighed with relief.

”Excellent work, class!” Javier called out as the clock struck the top of the hour and signaled the end of class. He waved his wand a few times and all fumes that had been hanging in the air vanished, clearing the air and any lingering stench from the activity.

”Please gather your things and clear out your cauldrons if you haven’t already. No homework tonight, but come prepared next lesson to do some heavy reading on our next potion!” he said to the class before dismissing them.
