Default Potions Lesson #2

Although laid out in the usual format, the classroom looked unusually sparse today. The absolute minimum necessary was out on the workbenches, only a single burner and tripod per place. And that included Noble’s own demonstration area, which had none of the usual paperwork or books. A solitary piece of paper held his lesson plan, with a pencil to check things off as they did them. On the side bench, the only hint that they might be brewing today was a small black bucket, the size a child might take to the beach to build sandcastles with, and a couple of covered trays - presumably containing ingredients or equipment.

The Potions Professor is stood at the back of the classroom, undoing the cuffs of his twilight blue robes and rolling up his sleeves to nearer three-quarter length. There’s a contemplative look on Noble's face, as if he’s lost in thought.

Lesson progression:
Greetings and first question
Answers and getting ready to brew
Cleaning your cauldron and first steps
Adding the rosemary, murtlap, honeywater and tea tree oil
Adding the dittany, wiggentree bark, salamander blood, silver powder, and boom berry juice

Despite Potions not normally working out for him, so far things seemed to be going smoothly. Probably because so far it had involved more cleaning than actual potion work. He busied himself at his workstation at the back of the classroom, first scrubbing down his bench with the ethanol and then scourgify-ing and sterilising the inside of his cauldron.

Being the clean-freak he was, he spent maybe a liiiiiiiiittle too long on the whole process and quickly realised his neighbours had already moved onto the next steps. He was behind already.

Oooops.

What was next? Max readjusted his glasses and squinted at the blackboard.

The third year noticed when Noble glanced her way, no doubt surveying her work and looking for mistakes. When he looked away and continued with the lesson, Maddie smiled to herself. Yes! She collected her glass stirring rod and knife and started the process of sterilizing them. She peered at her fire, found the blue part of it, and moved the stirring rod through it once...twice. She was careful about it, too, because she had a feeling the professor wouldn't show any extra mercy to an injured student. She did the same with the knife, too, moving it through twice, just as she'd done with the rod.

With that done, she collected the rosemary and began mimicking what the professor was instructing them to do. She started at the small end and pulled the stalk through pinched fingers. Soon, she held two pieces in her hand, just like Noble did. She then began chopping finely then measured out exactly one TABLEspoon. She heard that emphasis, Professor, and she figures it's for students like her! Confident that she was still on the right track, she sprinkled the finely chopped pieces over the top of her potion then stirred twice in a clockwise direction.

Maddie collected the murtlap tentacles and laid them in front of her. She then began slicing them in half lengthways. Leaving them on the cutting board, she added the ten drops of honeywater and tossed with her fingers the way she'd seen the professor do. Carefully collecting the pile, she added everything to the cauldron then turned toward the tea oil. Five drops, yes? One...two...three...four...five.

Moving along, she quickly copied down the next set of instructions before pulling out her glass stirring rod and knife. All she needed to do was run them through the hottest, blue, part of the flame and not burn her hand. Her hand slowly reached out towards the burner flame and allowed the glass stirring rod to pass through twice before repeating with the knife. No burned fingers!

Relieved that part was over, she picked up her rosemary and made quick work of stripping the leaves. With knife in hand, she very slowly and carefully chopped the leaves and measured out one tablespoon before sprinkling it on the potions and stirring clockwise two times.

The murtlap tentacles were up. Her heart pounded a bit, knowing she wasn’t the best at knife work and, after already chopping the rosemary without incident, she was pushing her luck. She placed the murtlap tentacles on her cutting board and picked the closest one to start with. Her knife point went in easily and slid down the length of the tentacle. Her heart calmed and her breathing slowed as she realized she was getting better at cutting. A small smile stretched across her face as she finished her slicing without cutting any of her fingers.

It was smooth sailing from that point on. She mixed the tentacles with the honeywater on her board, just like Professor Noble had shown them, then added the pile to her cauldron. She counted out the five drops of tea tree oil into the cauldron, then took a small step back to wait for the next set of instructions.

Dealing with the actual flame to sterilize the tools seemed troublesome so Septimus was sure to be cautious about it. Nothing like getting burned to ruin the class…well for him anyway. The boy took a hold of his glass stirring rod and bending to better get to the flame. Blue part…blue part…there. The rod being slipped in tentatively and twisted around a few times before slowly pulling it out. Then it was replaced by his knife to repeat the whole process. He was relieved when it was all over and his tools were successfully sterilized.

Both stirring rod and knife safely put aside, the Ravenclaw moved onto the next steps. First, the leaves coming off the woody stem of the rosemary. One by one starting from the small end as he dragged it through his fingers as demonstrated by Professor Noble. Then he took up the newly sterilized knife and began chopping up the leaves nice and fine, scooping up one TABLEspoon when he was done. This was then sprinkled over his cauldron before stirring.

One…two times clockwise.

Onto the murtlap tentacles, his knife at one point, then slowly and carefully slicing it all the way down in half. Septimus added the 10 drops of honeywater on top of the halves before getting his fingers all dirty and mixed up in everything. Then it was added to his cauldron as well followed by the tea tree oil.

One…two…three…four…five.

Fire, especially hot fire, was an excellent antiseptic, as Chloe was learning. First with using the super hot flame on the cauldron, and now as Chloe ran her stirring rod and knife twice through the blue flame beneath her cauldron. Once her supplies were sterilised, Chloe turned her attention to her rosemary, stripping off the leaves just like the professor demonstrated. After the stalk was clean and the leaves lay on the table in a tidy pile, Chloe could turn her sterilised knife to the leaves. Chopping wasn't her strong suit, since it required an attention to detail she wasn't particularly skilled at, but Chloe tried her best for even, tiny pieces.

One tablespoon went into the cauldron, followed by her stirring stick, and Chloe stirred it twice clockwise. And the murtlap tentacle... ewww. Chloe grimaced as she mimicked the professor's cut, and her face was all disgust as she added the honeywater and began to toss the tentacle and water together. It was terribly squishy, even with her gloves on, and the professor was a brave man to do it without reacting. The whole mess went into the cauldron, and then Chloe cleaned off her gloves before adding the tea tree oil. At least that smelled nice.

Was the clapping really necessary? No, no it wasn't. But Ronan kept that thought off his face as he ran his glass stirrer through the blue part of the flame under his cauldron, being careful not to burn his fingers. Once the stirrer had been sterilized, he moved on to his knife, careful this time not to burn or cut himself. The next step was something he was quite familiar with, since he did it regularly while cooking. He held the small end and slid his other finger from there down the stem, separating the rosemary leaves from the stem. Once that was done, he finely chopped the leaves before measuring out a tablespoon of them and sprinkling said tablespoon over the potion. Then he stirred the potion twice clockwise.

Taking out the murtlap tentacles, he sliced each one in half lengthwise before adding the ten drops of honeywater and tossing the two together (he was half tempted to use a bowl as one would do a salad, but he didn't want his potion vanished after coming so far). Once they were well mixed, he added them to his potion, then followed that up with the five drops of tea tree oil.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Woooooooooow, Anna really wasn't up for this class at all. She did place her quill on the parchment and stared at the professor with the blankest expression she could muster just so she wouldn't give him a defiant look for telling her what to do with her quill. Really? They were being micromanaged now on quill holding? Mer-lin.

The third year decided not to take any notes because all of that information was bound to be in their textbook anyway not that she was going to read it unless she really had to, but still.

It wasn't like she was making a point or anything, but the Gryffindor was going about slower than normal because this was Potions... it only lost to History of Magic in the boring class rating. And the whole cleanliness thing... that was getting ooold.

Her hair was already up in a ponytail, so she only had to roll up her sleeves and wash her hands. And... wipe her bench with ethanol while looking bored out of her brains. The lesson had barely started and she was already wishing she was outside doing ANYTHING but this. Merlin help her.

Again, she didn't take any notes about the ingredients because she trusted it was all in the textbook. So as soon as her workstation was clean, Anna went to put away the ethanol bottle and collect the necessary ingredients. Bringing them over to where she was working, she nearly missed the next instructions, but managed to Scourgify and use Incendio Tria in her cauldron ONLY because Incendio was actually one of her favourite types of spells.

The other set of instructions felt really Muggle to her, which wasn't really a problem as she was used to all things Muggle. But it did feel strange doing all of those things at Hogwarts. Anna wasn't going to complain or even say anything about it because she didn't want to deal with any fuss at the moment. She just wanted the lesson to be oveeeeeeer so she could enjoy herself. If only the lesson would speed up if she brewed everything quicker, but alas.

Maybe for that very reason Anna chose to continue in her slightly-slower-than-everyone-else pace, because eh. The 500ml of water was added, as was the 500ml of horklump juice and she was about to toss the larvae when she saw some classmates heating up their cauldrons first. She doubled checked the instructions and let out a "Oh" before starting the fire underneath her own cauldron and waiting for it all to boil.

One... two... three... She finally started adding the larvae once the whole thing was bubbling. Anna being Anna and also being super bored right now, she was adding them by slightly tossing them in the air and watching them plop into the mix. HOWEVER, she knew professor Noble enough to not make a massive scene of this and the tossing in the air was simply from below the rim level from the outer side of the cauldron and up and over the rim itself. Then plop! into the mix they went. NOT CAUSING ANY SPLASH, CHILL EVERYONE! Not that she thought people were going to freak out or anything, but who knew.

It was only then that she realised she had forgotten the flobberworm mucus. Welp. Without looking up or giving anyone any kind of acknowledgement or letting anything suspicious give her away, she simply added the 5 drops of flobberworm mucus there and then.

As she sterilised the other equipment on the fire, Anna's thoughts were fixed on the fire she was watching. Beautiful, beautiful fire. It was amazing how it sterilised things like that, but the most fascinating thing about it was that it could both do good and harm. So interesting! She probably spent a lot longer than she needed moving her knife and stirrer on the fire, and she totally missed what professor Noble had said about how to proceed with the next set of instructions. All she could do now was to read what he had written on the board and hope for the best.

She had dealt with rosemary before, though, and she knew how to pull the leaves out without watching the demonstration. She was about to add them to her cauldron, her hand holding the leaves right above it when her gaze went back to the board and she read the rosemary leaves had to be finely chopped. "Oops!" She exclaimed, pulling her hand back and watching a tiny leaf or two dive into the Potion. Nothing to see here! The Gryffindor chopped the rosemary leaves somewhat finely and put them on a tablespoon before finally dropping the ingredient into the mix as a whole. Sprinkle who? Never mind!

Anna stirred the Potion once clockwise and THEN she realised it was TWICE, so she did a second clockwise stir. Merlin, she did need to focus a bit more, even she was aware of that. But eh, effort.

To be honest, at this point she was slightly behind everyone and had to keep reading the instructions to know what to do next. But that wasn't a problem, the instructions should be good enough to guide her.

She sliced the murtlap tentacles lengthways and stared at the instructions board for a few seconds wondering what on earth the next bit meant. Shrugging, Anna sprinkled the 10 drops of honeywater all over the tentacles and added them to her cauldron. That was probably what they were meant to do anyway.

The 5 drops of tea tree oil were added effortlessly, as it seemed to be one of the easiest steps so far.

If Noble was honest with himself, it was almost reassuring that at least two of his students were now lagging behind schedule. Things had perhaps been going a bit too well, and slow-pokes were better than an exploding cauldron. Anna’s potion was looking less than healthy, which wasn’t exactly unexpected given her general air of being less-than-enthused and more often than not, distracted. [b] “Focus, Anna.”[b] There was a warning tone in Noble’s voice. Although the potions professor didn’t take further action for now, since he’d noticed that the Maxton’s cauldron was somehow still empty. “Water and horklump juice, Maxton,” came Noble’s stern voice from the front. “Chop chop, or you’ll be spending your lunchtime here too.” And he, at least, would rather that didn’t happen. He’d heard rumours of proper fish and chips being on the menu, and soggy leftover chips were no laughing matter indeed. If, of course, Noble ever could laugh.

Seeing as everyone else seemed to be keeping up okay, albeit with some grossed out faces – here’s looking at you, Chloe – Noble finished the steps he’d just gone over for his own potion, before moving on. “Sterilise your stirring rod again, and then stir your potion once clockwise, followed by once counter-clockwise. It should be a murky green in colour.” It didn’t really look like it should become a healing ointment at all. But give it patience, precision and persistence, it’d get there soon enough. Well, for a handful of the students, anyways.

“Then you need to crush three dried leeches with your pestle and mortar. They don’t need to be too fine, but there shouldn’t be any large lumps.” He dropped three leeches in his mortar, and used a twisting motion of his wrist with the pestle. “Sprinkle that in, and then you need to be well prepared for the next step. Shred your dittany finely…” He ran his knife through the flame, rolled the dittany leaves together to make them easier to hold, and started shredding it as he spoke. “Before you add it though, grate your Wiggentree bark. You’ll need three inches, so measure that out first and mark it with a small nick on the side with your knife. Don’t cut this off…use the rest of the bark as a handle so you don’t have to worry about grating your knuckles when you get near the end.” No need for added blood in this potion; that would contaminate it for sure. He measured out his three inches, and made a small niche with the knife. He then proceeded to grate up to that point; his hands kept well out of the way on the unneeded extra bark. Clever little tip, huh? “Now you can add the dittany, immediately followed by the Wiggentree bark.” Extra emphasis on the immediately.

There were only a few steps left now, and although he disliked to overload the students knowing how absent-minded they could be, he also needed to power through for those who did stand half a chance of brewing it correctly by the end of the lesson. “Measure out 250ml salamander blood, if you haven’t already, and pour it in slowly in a figure of eight motion. If you pour it unevenly and have some left, keep going back over the line you already traced. It’ll stay on the surface for you to see where you’ve been.” The dark red just kind of lingered there, rather than dissolving or dissipating into the surrounding liquid. “Add Ľ teaspoon of silver powder to the crossroad part at the middle of the eight, and then stir the potion three times following the figure of eight shape of the salamander blood. The colour should fade to a pale silvery grey.” Which his, of course, did. “Turn off your heat, and finally add your boom berry juice…stir clockwise until the potion is thick and white. Like a face cream. “The active brewing is now complete, but the potion needs to be left for 24 hours at room temperature before it is safe to use. You have 20 minutes in which to get finished if you want to go to lunch on time.”

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Goodness, this potion was starting to get a tad complicated but Daisy was determined to stay on top of things as she wrote down yet more notes.

Daisy wasn't taking any chances so she passed her glass stirring rod twice through the blue flame of her burner. Once she had sterilised the stirring rod, Daisy stirred her potion once clockwise, followed by once counter-clockwise. It soon became murky-green in colour, much to her inner delight. She then cleaned and sterilised her stirring rod.

Daisy then grabbed her pestle and mortar, using a Cleaning Charm before placing the three dried leeches inside her mortar which she carefully crushed to a powder using her pestle, ensuring that the powder was devoid of any large lumps. She then sprinkled the powdered leeches into her potion.

Daisy then grabbed her knife and sterilised it via passing it through the blue flame twice. She grabbed her dittany leaves and rolled them together to avoid any mishaps as she carefully shredded the leaves. She didn't add the dittany to her potion but instead measured three inches of Wiggentree bark and made a little nick with her knife on the side just like Professor Noble had demonstrated. Daisy then grated her Wiggentree bark until she reached the nick she had carved. Once that had been completed, Daisy added the dittany, immediately followed by the grated Wiggentree bark to her potion. Daisy then cleaned and sterilised her knife.

Daisy then used her syringe to measure 250ml of salamander blood and slowly poured it into her potion using a figure of eight motion and then she added her Ľ teaspoon of powdered silver to the crossroad part of the figure of eight. Daisy grabbed her stirring rod and stirred her potion thrice in the shape of the figure of eight and soon the colour of her potion became a pale, silvery grey. The Hufflepuff cleaned her syringe and stirring rod and she sterilised the stirring rod.

Daisy turned off the heat and measured and added 250ml of boom berry juice via her syringe. Using her stirring rod, Daisy stirred her potion in a clockwise direction until it was thick and white just like ointment.

Daisy then cleaned her equipment, except for her cauldron because it needed twenty-four hours to brew. Daisy stayed in her seat until she was allowed to go by Professor Noble.

She almost had a moment of rest, but Professor Noble plodded right along. It was the never ending potion. Leeches were next. She grabbed the three and put them in her mortar then used her pestle to crush them. She wasn’t exactly sure how to crust them not too fine, but fine enough, so she just did a best guess.

After the leeches were sprinkled in, it was on to the shredding of the dittany, nice and fine, and the grating Wiggintree bark. After the knife was sterilized, she almost cut too far into the bark, which would have resulted in blood loss, but stopped just before the halfway point and was able to hold onto the end to get the tree inches grated.

Dittany and wiggintree were in, one immediately after the other. The end was in sight. Her stomach was protesting the lack of food and she was more than ready to be finished. A figure eight of salamander blood later and she was ready to sprinkle the silver powder on the crossroads and stir in a figure eight exactly three times. With great relief, the potion turned a mostly silvery grey color.

She turned the burner off, added the boom berry juice, and started stirring clockwise. She stirred and stirred, all clockwise, waiting for the potion to turn all face creamy looking. Just when she thought her arm may fall off, the potion finally started thickening and turning white. Done!! She stepped back and did a little dance. It was her best potion of the year. Probably her best position of her entire Hogwarts career. No fingers were cut, nothing was set on fire, and it looked super close to the way Professor Nobles potion looked. She was beyond thrilled.

Glancing around, she noticed other students finishing up and cleaning their stations, so she did as well. A clean workstation was a happy workstation. She showed great care in keeping the area around the cauldron sterile while she cleaned her supplies, no need to contaminate the potion so close to it being ready.

Maddie was pretty proud of herself. Things were going pretty well for her, which gave her a boost of confidence she didn't know she needed. It seemed like the brewing process was nearly done, too, so she shouldn't have that many more steps. The third year reached for her stirring rod then repeated all the steps to sterilizing it a second time. When that was done, she stirred her potion once in a clockwise direction then once in a counter-clockwise direction. She paused then looked over her potion. Murky green---yup.

She moved on to dropping three dried leeches (ewww) in her mortar then crushed them with the pestle. When there were no large lumps, she sprinkled the crushed pieces into the potion. Well-prepared for the next step? Ouch. That sounded like something she could really mess up on. Mimicking the professor, she ran her knife through the flame, laid out the dittany leaves before her, then rolled them together. She shredded the leaves then left them to tend to the Wiggentree bark. She measured out three inches of the bark then marked off her measurements with her knife.

She then began grating just as the professor did, and she didn't even cut anything important---ahem, her fingers---in the process. She then added the dittany, immediately followed by the Wiggentree bark. Maddie then took the time to measure out 250 mL of salamander blood, and then she checked her measurements twice before pouring in the blood slowly in the shape of an eight. When she'd poured a sufficient amount of the blood into the potion, she looked at the figure-eight shaped substance just floating there on the top of things. Hmm...

Having gotten herself slightly overwhelmed with all the steps, she sighed softly before moving on. With exactly 1/4 teaspoon of silver powder measured out and ready to go, she added in the substance to the exact part she had been instructed to add it to. It was funny how potions worked. One false move in the wrong direction, and it was all over. Just like that. She stirred three times on the path the figure eight had made. She watched as the potion turned a a pale silvery gray.

SUPER AWESOME.

With a sigh indicating to herself that she'd reached the final stretch, Maddie turned off the heat. At that point, she added the 250mL of boomberry juice and stirred clockwise until the potion was thick and white. DONE. Well, done with everything except waiting out the twenty-four hours. On that note, the third year began cleaning up her tools and work station while she waiting on dismissal.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Right. Don't be late. Easily done. Why give him one more thing to frown about while she was around? On time she could and would do.

Remembering all the times she'd gone ahead and awoken the man's ire, Jessa chose to fall in line with him as he explained the steps. Nevermind they were all in the textbook, he seemed to have a problem with anyone stepping outside the grain. Luckily, this wasn't a problem for the young girl. She hated standing out and found it much easier to simply fit in line with whatever was being expected--in most cases. The 6th year reached for her glass stirring rod and knife then ran them twice through the hottest part of the flame on her burner--didn't need him telling her it was the blue part but she assumed that was for the benefit of others. One then the other, carefully she took them through the flames until she felt it was enough.

Jessa carefully set both instruments down then reached for her rosemary. As suggested, she started at the small end, and pulled the stalk through her pinched fingers to get all the leaves off at once.Huh. It really was easy. Surely not as easy as charming it to do the task itself but she'd let the man have it.

The chopping though....would definitely be magical. She was aware she'd never get it finer than she could if the knife was animated to do this job specifically. It could not be distracted, it would not make mistakes so that was what she did. Jessa leaned against her table and watched the knife work. That done, she measured one tablespoon of the stuff. It amused her that he felt the need to emphasize the "table”. Showed just how much faith in had in them and their own reading abilities. She sprinkleed it over the top of her potion and began stirring clockwise--just the two stirs.

Jessa reached for her murtlap tentacles and again charmed her knife to get to work cutting them in halves lengthwise as the man--and her textbook--instructed. It was much more efficient this way and allowed her to give more of her attention to the Professor despite any real need for this. Next she added the 10 drops of honeywater and and charmed the whole thing to toss itself about in like fashion to salad making or whatever it was the Professor had been doing. This achieved a more thorough job. The whole pile was added to her cauldron, just before she added the tea tree oil.

Oh, they were back to sterilization? Right. Jessa sterilized her stirring rod once more then stirred her potion once clockwise, then another stir in a counter-clockwise motion. The 17 year old stared down into her cauldron for a colour check. It wasn't so much that she thought it wouldn't be the way it should be, but rather it was good practice to assess your potions as you went along, so she did. Yep, murky green, all good here.

The three dried leeches were levitated into her mortar just before she animated the pestle to start its crushing. This was also sprinkled in.

With the warning about the next step, it was also another she felt more confident carrying out with magic. Copying the man, Jessa ran her knife through the flames again while she charmed her leaves to roll themselves. The knife she charmed to begin its work of shredding.

Before adding it, she measured out three inches of Wiggentree bark. While Professor's tip was 'useful', Jessa wouldn't be grating herself and disregarded it as a result. Much like everything else, charms were again heavily at work. It just gave the job such a polished feel to it. The Ravenclaw added her dittany, followed by the grated Wiggentree bark.

Again with the emphasis, Professor.

Her 250ml of salamander blood was already measured out. Yeah. So. Slowly, she poured it into her cauldron in the figure eight the man had mentioned. Next she added Ľ teaspoon of silver powder to the section in the middle of the eight where things crossed and stirred three times following the figure of eight shape. Unsurprisingly the colour began fading to a pale silvery grey.

Jessa turned her heat off then added boom berry juice. Here she stirred clockwise until the potion became thick and white. That made her finished and in no danger of remaining here for lunch.

No thanks.

It made sense to keep cleaning the stirring stick as they put it back into the cauldron, especially since it was so easy to sterilize it in the blue flame beneath the cauldron. Chloe cleaned her stirring stick and dropped it back into the cauldron, stirring it once clockwise and then once in the opposite direction. She sterilized it again before dropping it on the counter.

The dried leeches were gross, and she didn't bother to school her features as she dropped them into the pestle and tapped their desiccated bodies lightly with her mortar. Half-hearted crushing wasnt going to get the job done, so Chloe buckled down and managed it, although she made faces the whole times. Just so the professor knew she was being particularly brave. Once the leeches were essentially gross bug powder, Chloe sprinkled the contents of her pestle into the cauldron.

Next up, the dittany. Chloe watched the professor carefully as she sterilized her knife in her flame, and then she did her best to mimic his motions in shredding her dittany. The pieces were mostly the same size and shape, and Chloe dumped them into her cauldron once she reached two cups. Another cleansing, and she grated the Wiggentree bark into even finer pieces. Also roughly the same size and shape. Very roughly.

Merlin, there were a lot of ingredients in this potion. Chloe added the salamander blood, trickling it out slowly as she drew a figure eight over the surface of her cauldron. Drip drip drip driiiiiiiip and drop. How was anyone even good at potions, when it didn't seem intuitive at all? She could still generally see the figure eight from the blood, and Chloe sprinkled the powdered silver over top of it all before tracing the line with her cleansed stirrer. One. Two. Aaaaand three.

Was it gray? Was it... turning gray...? Chloe leaned closer and decided it was definitely... chalky. Sort of light and gray. She turned off the heat and immediately added the boom berry juice, whispering "boom" as she did so. It mattered. It really did. Another cleansing of her stirring stick, and Chloe stirred the whole chalky gray mess. It was goopy and pale, and maybe that was as good as it got.

Having finished his own potion and left it to cool at the front of the class, Noble now wandered to inspect how everyone was proceeding. He crossed his hands behind his back, a stern look on his face not giving away any clues as to how he thought they were doing. Inside though, he was actually somewhat impressed. Did he expect any of their efforts to function at full potency? Not particularly. But it least there hadn’t been any catastrophic failures so far.

He headed over to the quiet Hufflepuff first, who had a quiet focus about her disposition. “Looking promising,” he told Daisy, peering into her cauldron as she stirred in the figure of eight shape. Her work showed the precision and accuracy he strived for in his classroom, and the silvery grey wasn’t far off his own. “Keep it up.” She’d have a good result if she did.

It was a good job she hadn’t verbalised that thought about this potion being never-ending, else Noble might have been tempted to award her with a month or even year long date working on a truly longwinded potion. The second year was starting to show promise with her potioneering though. “Next time, pound the leeches a couple more times,” Noble said as he watched her beat the potion. It eventually had turned – but it had taken a lot more arm power than his own. “I suspect you had a couple of lumps left hindering the reaction.”

Was it a surprise the Hufflepuffs seemed to be doing the best job? Not particularly. They were known for their work ethic, after all. He halted behind another Hufflepuff now, his eyes on her measuring. Clearly she’d learnt her lesson from the joint Herbology class, and a small smile appeared at the corner of his mouth as he watched her double-check the measurement of the salamander blood. Students might not like his methods in the moment, but it did get decent results. Noble was confident of rising standards under his watchful eye. “Good work, Maddie,” he said with a nod before moving on. The white ointment was looking promising indeed.

It’d been how many months he’d had Jessa in his class now? As per usual, he eyed her use of magic for every. single. little. single. step. He was all for precision and reproducibility in brewing, stressed it to the point of becoming a broken record as a necessity for beginner training, but potions was most accurately described as an art. It required a little passion, a little soul.

It seemed that the Ravenclaw had neither, at least when it came to his lessons. Magic was imbued in the brewing process, in the way ingredients were prepared and finessed. Ingredients by themselves didn’t make a potion, else any muggle would be able to concoct something. And the overuse of magic in preparation of ingredients could taint particularly finicky potions to the point of rendering them useless. “Next lesson,” he said as he watched her finish up and the white ointment appear, “You’re to hand me your wand at the start of class. I want you to get a proper feel for your ingredients. For the process. If a magical automaton could brew, I would have been out of a job a long time ago.” And for the last year, that’s all she’d been: a robot. For as clever a student as he’d been told she was, it was a complete and utter waste.

A student that wasn’t a robot, however, was Chloe Kettleburn. Yes, he’d seen that look at the dried leeches, and he was mildly intrigued as to what her reaction might have been with live ones. Unfortunately, she could have done with a little more accuracy in her work, and by the time he’d reached her workstation, it was a tad late. A thick, bright white ointment the gloopy mess was definitely not. Noble grunted. If he had to hazard a guess, it’d gone wrong somewhere after adding the salamander blood. With it so close to the end of the lesson though, there wasn’t much point to telling her to start completely over – and he did appreciate her enthusiasm. [b]“Next time pay a bit more attention to what you’re doing with the salamander blood and silver powder. It’s not bad though, for a first attempt."

He wandered around the other students, before heading to the front of the class. “When you’ve finished brewing, tidy up your workbench and you’re free to go. I’ll mark your potions tomorrow afternoon, and you can come reclaim your cauldron after dinner.” Anyone who was unsuccessful would find it empty when they returned. The others would be allowed to keep their results if they so chose. “If you’re still brewing…then, what are you waiting for? Chop chop!"

ooc: Thank you SO much for joining Noble and I. It's been so fun being a part of your creativity :3 And what a shocker, not a single exploded cauldron! I'll leave the thread open for a few more hours in case anyone wants to finish up.

Again, with the sterilizing. At least Septimus felt a little less fearful of the action, sterilizing his stirring rod once more as directed by the professor before moving to do the actual stirring. Once clockwise followed by another counterclockwise. Then watching the liquid, the second year was relieved at its green color. He supposed it could be considered murky green. At least he figured it was good enough to feel confident as he moved on.

Three leeches went into his mortar and he took up the pestle to begin grinding. Crush…crush…crush. Crush…crush…crush. Crush…crush…crush. When he was satisfied with the consistency of the crushed leeches, Septimus followed the directions and sprinkled it all into his cauldron. Then his knife went back into the flame to repeat its sterilization as Professor Noble had demonstrated without mentioning before shredding his dittany as directed. Next, the three inches of wiggentree were marked before grating it all and saving his knuckles. Finally he picked up the shredded dittany in one hand and the bowl of collected grated wiggentree bark and added them in order, immediately after themselves.

First dittany…then bark.

And onto the salamander blood. Septimus but the inside of his cheek as he tried to concentrate. Just because so far all had gone well. Didn’t mean it would stay that way.250 ml of the blood were measured out and the Ravenclaw carefully poured the liquid in the desired figure eight design, letting out a breath he hadn’t been aware of holding when it was done fairly evenly. The silver powder went next, into the point where the figure 8 crossed itself before he picked up his stirring rod once more. Tracing the figure 8 three times in its movements within the brewing potion.

In the end, he was greeted with the silvery grey. It was still holding. The second year turned off his heat as directed and returned to stirring clockwise until it was more white and more solid than liquid in a creamy state. Whew…he was done.

And class was over.

"Excuse me?" No really, his statement had taken her quite aback and she wasn't at all sure she'd heard him correctly. Her wand? The start of class? Her brows furrowed in obvious confusion as once again the man passed a command without any form of explanation. Jessa's hands that once busily worked to pack her things back into her bag went still. ".....I haven't done anything wrong."

She'd been one of the first to finish her brew and had followed him along so closely that she was in danger of rushing on ahead. She hadn't caused any sort of fuss. Hadn't interfered with anyone else's brew. This class by and large was one of her least eventful.

.....so.........why did it feel like she was being punished for it?

"You heard me." Noble looked at Jessa, his face unmoving. He knew she probably saw it as a punishment, but really it was about helping her become a better potioneer. "And I didn't say you had." Well, he'd told her previously in class to chop things by hand. But then afterwards, after doing exactly as she was told, she always decided she knew better and went back to using magic even though he'd demonstrated otherwise. So he was taking decisive action.

"Next lesson, I don't want you using magic to prepare your ingredients. I know you can charm a knife to do your chopping and peeling, but I want you to refine your skills and handiwork." If she actually had any. Maybe that was why she always used magic, because her knife skills were next to non-existent. "You forget that potions is an art too. It's possible to be too clinical, too controlled. Using the wrong type of magic, even if just to chop an ingredient, can taint and ruin a whole potion." He knew. He'd done the experiments at university, re-run them again, and still been shocked at the results. And honestly, it was easy for him to lose the soul in class too, when the umpteenth cauldron exploded, and half the class somehow managed to forget which way the hands on a clock moved and how to count to ten whilst stirring. They needed constant reminders to stay focused.

"You're a sixth year NEWTs student. If you have any passion for potions, it's time you stop hiding behind that shield of magic. It'll do you no favours when it comes to getting the feel of a potion...when you need to ad lib because an ingredient is unavailable." Did she understand his thinking now?

OH ....... OKAY, well good thing she hadn't done anything with the ethanol just yet. Scorgify and sterilize with incendio tria. She felt slightly abashed for not realizing that was what he meant, considering she was on seventh year of potions now. But it was likely due to her distracted state of mind that caused the momentary lapse in memory. Swallowing, Skylar nodded at Noble and followed his lead with a non-verbal scorgify and a non-verbal incendio tria, directing it around the inside of the cauldron in a spiral shape.

Sterilization complete. Using a syringe, she measured out 500 ml of water and horklump juice, squeezing the syringe into the cauldron. To be honest, use of a syringe was actually REALLY cool. And soothing, in a weird, gross sense. Right though, five drops of flobberworm mucus, ten blue-bottle fly larvae, one at a time. And just wait.

Sterilizing the stirring rod and knife through the flame, check. And then carefully, she worked to strip the leaves from the rosemary and chop it up. Rather roughly at first, but she had some aggression she was working out, so hopefully Noble wouldn't mind. It was safer to work out her aggression on the rosemary, right? Coarse, course .... eventually became finer. And she measured one tablespoon carefully, sprinkling it over the top of her potion, before stirring twice clockwise. Murtlap tentacles, and Skylar found herself smiling at the foolish things she'd said when she was just an ickle third year. Essence of murtlap being her amortentia because it reminded her of the healer? REALLY? What had ickle thirteen year old her been even thinking? She had no idea, but the lasting effects stuck with her, somehow, as she quietly sliced the tentacles in half lengthways. And added ten drops of the honeywater over the tentacles, gentle tossing them together. Slimy, yet satisfying. Was this how Cassie felt when baking? Adding the pile into the cauldron once she was done, she then proceeded to add five drops of the tea tree oil.

Picking up her stirring rod, she glided it through the blue part of the flame, as she'd done before, and then stirred her potion once clockwise and once counter-clockwise. Letting the rod lean against the cauldron side, she dropped three dried leeches into the mortar and began to work through crushing them. Once content with that, she sprinkled that in and then using her freshly sterilized knife, she shredded the dittany into a pile onto her cutting board. But didn't add it, as specified, grating her three inches of Wiggentree bark into another pile. Dittany and then promptly adding the Wiggentree bark. And then the Salamander blood, which apparently was the only blood to be added to this potion. Heh. Only problem? She was doing fine up until this point except the tracing in a figure eight pattern was more like a zero with a line down the middle. Hopefully it would be okay? Quarter teaspoon of silver powder down the middle of the zero eight and three stirs which she found easier to do the stirring motion in the shape of an eight than the arbitrary pouring of the salamander blood. It was a gray ..... not as pale as Noble's was, but it was light-ish? Turning her heat off, she added the 250 ml of boom berry juice and stirred clockwise, watching for it to thicken. Oh, so they weren't placing it in a vial just yet? Peering at her potion, she bit her lip and glanced up Noble. She guessed this was good, hopefully. It was mostly white... ish.

Tidying her work area, she left her namecard by her cauldron, in case Noble forgot the seating arrangements and nodded at the Potions Master before departing.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

It was true, Anna's mind was indeed elsewhere for the majority of the time she was supposed to be focusing on Potion making, and when professor Noble's voice came from out of nowhere - or so it felt - to warn her to focus, the Gryffindor nearly jumped out of her skin.

She looked up at him and pursed her lips, watching him without replying as he moved on to check on another student. Focus... yeeeeeah, nah, thanks. She was doing alright, given her cauldron was still in its original shape and all. Her Potion was the absolute wrong colour and texture as it was meant to be, buuut did she care? Nah. Not one bit. Sorry not sorry!

The third couldn't help but to daydream about flying outside in the great weather they were likely to have that day. For that reason, she once again missed the instructions and demonstration given by the professor. Anna was somewhat thankful the steps were being written on the board, because at least she could sort of follow those and not seem like she was just there doing nothing. She wasn't exactly looking to be top of the class, but losing house points wasn't on her to-do list for that day.

The girl did stir her Potion once clockwise and once counter-clockwise, but since her mixture was FAR from being like any of her classmates', she decided to stir it in either direction a few more times just... to see what would happen. Maybe it'd help a bit, who knew? Her hopes weren't high at all, which was good as she wasn't disappointed when her Potion looked absolutely terrible.

Anna did wonder if it was a good idea to waste the rest of her ingredients like that, but then she remembered they weren't from her Potions kit and were all provided by professor Noble. Soooo... wasting them in a Potion that was obviously not going to turn out right didn't sound that bad for her. Heehee.

BESIDES, the man said whoever hadn't finished the Potion by the time the lesson ended would have to spend their lunchtime there finishing it. "No, thank you." She said in a low tone as she crushed the leeches in her mortar and sprinkled it all in her cauldron.

After reading the next set of instructions, Anna shredded the dittany and grated the Wiggentree bark and... added them at the same time. Her eyes widened and she did lean back a little as her Potion started to raise at a somewhat alarming pace. She checked around her station to see if the others' were getting the same result, but nope. It was only hers that was raising. Well then.

Merlin, she really couldn't be bothered anymore by now. The Gryffindor had to resist the urge to just chuck the remaining ingredients into her cauldron and hope for the best, but she didn't fancy having to restart the whole thing and have to brew the Potion correctly during lunchtime. That request wouldn't be below Noble, she knew it for a fact, so she had to try her best to at least SEEM like she was making an effort.

The girl huffed as she read the next instructions on the board and got the salamander blood to pour in... a figure of eight motion. Urgh, Merlin. What a fuss. She did do it, though. Figure of eight, and all. Have a look, professor Noble, Anna doing at least one step properly over here.

The next step also included the figure of eight that had actually disappeared from the surface of Anna's messed-up Potion. Never mind, she was happy to improvise. It did annoy her that her Potion was so much near the brim and she waited until professor Noble had her back to her and cast a quick Tergeo to vanish SOME but not all of the Potion. There. It wasn't nearly overflowing anymore. Heeheehee. Nothing to see here.

Anna added the 1/4 teaspoon of powdered silver and since she couldn't follow the eight shape anymore, she stirred her Potion three times clockwise again. No need to say the colour of mixture now was more that of vomit than the shade of pale grey it was supposed to be.

She read the last step and scoffed. Turning off the fire, she added the boom berry juice, alright, but didn't take too long stirring because she know no matter how much stirring she did, it would NOT end up like a white ointment.

HOWEVER, she kept stirring and looking at professor Noble to make sure he would SEE her stirring it. After that was sorted, she stopped and was done. She genuinely had to stifle a laugh because her Potion looked horrible and she hadn't even done it wrong intentionally.

She WAS done, though. Aaaaand.... she was quickly packing her things because she wanted out of there before professor Noble decided she would brew her Potion from the start again for some CRAZY reason.

All Jessa could do was stare, mouth slightly agape and thoughts racing as the man shed some light on his train of thinking. Where she'd been confused before, she was now confused and offended.

Using the wrong sort of magic? Taint her own potion? The insinuation that if she didn't chop things with her own hands she wouldn't know what to do in a pinch when it came to her potions. For what felt like several long minutes, all the Ravenclaw could do was stare and wonder what had brought on this...new decree.

Of course, he'd told her not to use magic before, but it was such an automatic action by now that she'd hardly noticed. The fact she wasn't using the "wrong" sort of magic and didn't end up with tainted potions gave her even less reason to listen to what had at the time been a silly suggestion but was now going to be a full on rule?

Back up for a second though. He thought she'd use the wrong kind of magic???? He thought she was capable of such a simple mistake? As if hours of her time wasn't dedicated to constant improvement--if only for the sake of having her experiments run smoothly. He thought.....he thought she wasn't capable of ad lib with potions? What did he think she did half the time she ran out and didn't want to ask permission to raid his storage space???

But she wouldn't win.

Enough confrontations with the man had taught her that so rather than protest, Jessa simply collected her things and headed from the class.
