Down the end of the potions corridor, past the main classroom and linked to the storeroom, is the potions laboratory. A smaller version of their usual classroom, it’s set up very similarly - lines of benches facing the front, with access to a burner for a cauldron for every pair of chairs. Lining the side walls is storage. In the bottom cupboards you’ll find all the basic equipment, neatly laid out in trays. And on the shelves above can be found the standard potions ingredients. However, if you need anything more specialised, you’ll have to talk to Professor Noble about accessing the storeroom. If you try the door without permission, you’ll find it securely and safely locked; it might even set off a spark or two in warning. At the back of the classroom are a row of sinks and plenty of draining racks. If you use classroom equipment, you’re expected to clean and tidy up after yourselves.
At the front of the room is a sign in book, logbook and list of rules. Before touching anything, please sign in and check the logbook for updates. Professor Noble will regularly be checking, and doesn’t take kindly to unauthorised brewing. There are also several potions books for reference and inspiration.
Rules
Sign in with your name, year, house and potion being brewed.
If you need to leave your station for any reason, leave a note on your desk saying where in the recipe you’ve got up to, and how long you’ll be away. Any unattended potions without this information will be immediately banished.
Put equipment and ingredients back after use. If you’ve broken something or an ingredient is nearly gone, please make a note in the logbook so I’m aware and can get it replaced.
If you make a mess, clean it up. I will know, and extra-curricular brewing privileges will be removed for repeat offenders.
The lab will be open from breakfast and locked an hour before curfew. If you’ll need access outside of this, you will need my prior permission before you start brewing. Please bring me a timetable showing why the potion cannot be completed in normal hours.
Any questions or problems, please come and find me. I’m most likely to be found teaching in the classroom, or in my office.
Callum came into the Potion's lab a few minutes before he was supposed to meet up with his older sister. And, as per the rules, he went to sign in.

With that done he went over to a table and began to set up his burner and cauldron along with his ingredients kit and his silver knife and mortar and pestel.. Pretty much everything he had in his kit he'd brought to school.

Today was no different than any other day since the term began. Wake up and get ready, run around the pitch, breakfast, shower and dress for lessons, other meals and homework, extracurricular activities. Repeat the next day. Some in between when there was a bit of downtime like now Rylee penciled in a little bit of 'Her' time.
This morning happened to be no different except for the matter of there being no lessons. Thank you Saturday! First thing after her morning run, breakfast and shower, she headed straight for the Potion's lab to meet up with Reese. They had a potion to brew.
Entering the lap the third year took a quick look around, eyes finding her brother instantly and sending her a small grin. "I'll be right there," she told him grabbing the quill to fill in her name on the logbook.

Setting down the quill she made her way over towards Reese and laid her potions kit down on the table beside his. "Are we making a single patch together or each brewing our own?" Either way was just fine by her. Thanks to the owl that arrived this morning during breakfast from their big sister she knew for sure that they had everything they needed.
One by one Rylee began removing things from her kit and laying them out across the table neatly and in the proper order in which they would be used. "I brought the instructions too... just in case." This was laid in the center of the table in clear view for the both of them.

Effect: Transforms the appearance of the drinker into that of a mundane animal, so the drinker still retains their human mind
Ingredients
8 leeches
1.5 cm of boomslang skin, dried under sun for 7 days
2 horns of bicorn (grated)
1 scoop of frozen lacewing flies at -21°C for 7 days
6 measures of Fluxweed picked on waxing gibbous
A part (if fur is used, more than 3 strands) of the desired non-magical animal
Instructions
Fill the cauldron with 700 mL of water and light a low fire
Add the leeches after 4 minutes of heating the water
Gently lay the skin on the water surface
Once the skin disappears, stir 6 times counter-clockwise with a metal stick
Bring the fire to maximum and wait for 7 minutes for a pewter cauldron, 17 minutes for brass, and 23 for copper.
Grate the bicorn horns in the meantime.
Once the time is up, lower the fire to medium and add the horns gently
Wave your wand and say 'Permuto motus'
Add the lacewing flies
Starting in the clockwise direction, alternate between clockwise and counter clockwise and stir 14 times IN TOTAL (7 clockwise, 7 counter clockwise). Use a wooden stick
Add the fluxweed and bring the fire to low
Let the potion brew for 23 hours for a pewter cauldron, 17 hours for brass, and 7 hours for copper. Keep the fire on until it's exactly 23/17/7 hours.
Once it's time, put out the fire and either store it or add the preferred NON MAGICAL animal part (fur or other) to use

Extra notes
The drinker will be clumsy until they get used to the altered body form.
It's colourless and completely clear. It changes according to the fur colour of the preferred animal.
The taste depends on the animal.
A glass is normal dose. There is no overdose.
Duration: 15 minutes-5 hours (depends on the ability of the brewer)
Transformation process is only a little bit painful
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you wish to transform into a sea animal, REMEMBER THAT YOU HAVE TO BE IN THE WATER. OTHERWISE, YOU WILL DIE ON LAND.
The base can be stored for up to to years at room temperature away from direct sunlight, but after an animal part is added, it should be consumed in a month.

Callum gave his sister a nod as she signed in and told him she'd be just a moment. And then he watched as she unpacked her kit and took out the copy of the recipe for their potion.. She was so much more organized than he was.. All her vials and pouches were in order and neat. His were more of a jumble that he normally tossed into his kit any old way. Basically, as long as the clasps caught, he was satisfied with how he'd stowed it.
" Good idea getting the instructions, Ry.. I know I don't remember each of the steps yet.", Cal replied as he waited for her to be completely set up and ready to begin.
" Umm.. Why don't we each make our own. But we can both prepare the ingredients together. ", he suggested. " That way we both get practice brewing and get the potions brewed? "

Order and precision was always how she did things. If it wasn't an exact way it wouldn't work out. It also helped keep her levels of stress down and things just ran more smoothly if everything was how it should be.
"I always have the instructions. If not in here than in my book." Her book that held everything. The drawn out map of Hogwarts, potions, spells, and just everything. It was her very own keepsake book holding all things important.
Rylee nodded once firmly. "Okay." With that she took out a few more things allowing her to be able to work on the potion for herself.
"Let's get started." Pulling out her wand she measured out exactly 700mL of water and poured it directly into her cauldron. A low flame was than lit under it and a timer was set for four minutes.

Cal simply nodded as his sister told him all the obvious things about herself as he waited for her to set up her station." Maybe I should get me one of those books started.. "
It did seem like she had a good thing going having one source to access for all important knowledge and findings.. He also knew she liked to experiment with her flower crowns and the length of time the flower's natural aroma lasted.. Seriously, he thought his sister was practically a genius.
He followed the instructions as he measured the 700ml of water and set the small flame under his cauldron as well as his timer. He looked for his jar of leeches and set the opened jar between them. " Use mine, Ry.. I got extras from that little pool along the stream back home.. They're good and healthy."

Casting a sideways glance at him she laughed. "You have one already. The book with the map of the castle and it's grounds inside. I've had Rian charm mine into sections, each a different color for easier finding. If I run out of pages another appears when I need it." Rylee gave him a smile. "You can do the same thing. Or we can copy what you want from my book into yours." Whatever he wanted to do.
She found her book incredibly useful. Color coded for easier access, holding everything she might need all in one place. Certain portions invisible and charmed to only allow her to see what's written with a simple whispered charm. It functioned just as she wanted it to.
"Awesome. Thanks." Rylee grinned at him quickly nodding when the time was up. "Eight leeches into the cauldron now." One..two... she counted them out as she added them into the cauldron. "Now the boomslang skin..." which was laid gently on the surface of the water. Watching it sink down into the water she grabbed her metal stirrer. "Counter-clockwise stirs six times."
And go. One stir, two stir... all the way to six in a counter-clockwise motion.

" Oh.. That's right!.. ", he answered with a bit of a giggle.. " I'll have to make it a point to keep that with me at all times like you do.." Cal was honestly very impressed with the amount of knowledge she had managed to acquire within her book.
Callum worked alongside his sister. They worked almost in unison as they added their leeches and set the boomslang skin on the hot water and watched it sink and disappear. He stirred it counter-clockwise as the recipe had instructed... Round and round six times.
Next he reset the flame on his burner high and set his timer." Seven minutes for our pewter cauldrons, Ry.. Here.. Grate these.", he added as he passed her two bicorn horns. Then he proceeded to grate his own for the next step of their potion.

Rylee smirked at him. "Mm.. I shrink it down and slip it into my pocket so I always have it with me." Always. Having her book with her was like having her wand with her. She needed it there at all times.
It was funny how closely the two of them worked. Almost exactly in sync with each and every movement they made.
"Seven, got it.." Rylee mutter setting the flame on her burner to high before resetting the timer again. "Thanks." Accepting the two bicorn horns she got to work grating them into a bowl.
Once the seven minutes was up she lowered the flame to medium. "Lower the flame to medium now and then add the bicorn horns gently." Which she now did as well. "Now we wave our wand and say 'Permuto motus' okay?" she looked at Reese to make sure he was ready before proceeding to move on.
Pulling her wand from it's holster on her arm she gave it a wave and recited, "Permuto motus."

Where in the castle could she not expect to find Scrimgeour or his band of baboons? The answer to that question, she presumed would be down in the dungeons, more specifically the Potions laboratory. So that is where Nora decided to go after supper since there were still a few hours remaining until curfew.
Those few hours would be just enough to brew something. A particular potion was already in mind, though she was prepared to say she was making shoe polish if any adult happened to stop by and ask. Nora, regardless of only being on the cusp of sixteen, had a mind that was beyond her age.
Feeling at home in the laboratory, the blonde picked up the quill and, after a very brief moment of hesitation, signed her name into the book. After her name followed the required details, though she went with 'shoe polish' for the last column.
Noble wouldn't mind, right?
Wasting not another moment at the book, the girl went to fetch everything she would need for the brewing.

With her mind constantly in thought, Hanna was having great difficulty sleeping, and the only thing she could think to try, being that she couldn't go down to the kitchen to get a glass of warm honey milk, was brew a simple sleeping draught. She had all of the ingredients in her potions kit, and had learnt it in her first year. With notes in hand, she strolled into the Potions Laboratory and saw someone else already in there.
First thing, rules. She went to the sign in page and wrote in it; Hanna Newton, 3rd Year, Ravenclaw, Sleeping Draught
Then, turning to the other person in the room, she said "Hello," as she went about setting up her things nearby. She was curious, always, with potions. What were people making? Was it possible they were inventing something? Where did they get their ingredients?
First was always cleaning. She cast a scouring charm on all of the tools she would be using, and then flattened out her parchment of notes to remind her of the ingredients she needed. "What are you brewing?" she asked the other girl.

Vials, ingredients, and other necessities were gathered at her station. The only thing not present was a Potions book or even an index card listing the steps of the potion she was planning on brewing. Nora knew it by heart. Believe it or not, she was a rather experienced potioneer.
Nora made quick work of cleaning her cauldron and then lighting the burner underneath, all within the bat of an eye. It looked like she had been doing this for years.
But she was momentarily distracted from her potion when she heard the door creak open and in came Hanna. Not that she could greet the girl by name. So a simple 'hello' was given in response before she started pouring in ingredients and stirring.
On any other given day, the blonde would have been curious as to why the other person in the room was there and inquire about what was being brewed, though she was highly focused on the work she was doing. Another ingredient was plopped into the cauldron, another stir, increasing the intensity of the flames, all with the brewing was going well.
Her eyes glanced up at Hanna, who was curious about what she was brewing. For a moment Nora thought about lying but in the end decided to go with the truth. She knew somehow that the young Ravenclaw wouldn't go running off to a professor.

Hanna was pulling out her standard ingredient, flobberworm mucous, and valerian sprigs, with her lavender in hand, when Nora said she was brewing...
"What?" Hanna asked, and the lavender slipped out of her hands. "Essence of... insanity?" Hanna paused before scooping up the lavender on the floor. She set it aside and fetched more out of her potions kit. Not wanting to use floor lavender for her potion, she might just put it under her pillowcase for a nice scent. "What's in that one?" Hanna didn't even want to know what Nora was thinking of doing with it. It really wasn't any of her business, but she hoped it would be going into Professor Scrimgeours nightly glass of Student's Tears or whatever it was he drank at night.

The girl's reaction was followed with the plopping noises of a few ingredients being added to the cauldron. More stirring occurred as a bit of a grin played on her lips.
A single nod was given when Hanna repeated the name of the potion that was being brewed. Yes, Essence of Insanity. Nora wasn't sure if anything more needed to be said about that. She was sure that the young Ravenclaw was likely curious about why she was brewing such a potion, but the question wasn't asked so the blonde felt no need to tell.
Four feathers were then picked up out of her set of ingrediants. "Just a handful of your standard potion ingredients. Leech juice, some Nightshade, an Infusion of Wormwood, and Flobberworm mucus to start off with. I'm just adding some Fwooper feathers now," she continued, dropping a feather of each colour: one orange, one pink, one lime green, and one yellow.
Complex patterns of stirring then followed until the feathers disintegrated with the other boiling ingredients that were already in the cauldron. While she did this, her eyes then glanced over at what Hanna was doing. "What are you up to?"

Hanna was enthralled by Nora's brewing, and watched with all of her attention. Having not yet started to put anything into her cauldron it wasn't such a big deal. Nothing was going to explode. It didn't sound like such a complex set of ingredients, no, but the way Nora was stirring the potion seemed to be. "Is it a difficult one?" Not that she had any intentions of brewing it herself. At least not anytime soon.
"Oh... well I wanted to do a sleeping draught." She snapped her attention back to her own work, and started to add four clean sprigs of the lavender, along with two measures of standard ingredient to her mortar and commenced crushing it. "I just need something to help me sleep sometimes." The draught helped a lot, and she woke up feeling surprisingly energised.

Was Essence of Insanity a difficult brew? Well, yes and no. It all really depended. Nora continued stirring, thinking of a concise and not-so-complicated answer before speaking.
"It comes more difficult the more potent you want the potion to be," the blond replied as she stopped stirring and glanced at the few other ingredients she needed to add. "But, in general, I would say it isn't the easiest to brew. It takes a few days as it needs to simmer and there are some other ingredients that need to be added."
A hand then reached for some Billywig stings, which were carefully added to the cauldron one by one.
Her head briefly bobbed up and down when Hanna revealed what potion she was brewing. A Sleeping Draught, simple to make but quite effective. She had considered brewing its more potent counterpart, the Draught of Living Death, but decided against it because the Essence of Insanity was more difficult to provide an antidote for.
"I see," she responded, watching as the final sting disintegrated. "Need any help?" All she had remaining with her potion for the time being was to add a small amount of Lobalug venom and let it simmer in the corner all night.
