Which do you prefer, the films or the books?
And why?

Both hold special places in every Potterhead's heart, but which do you prefer? Do you enjoy revisiting Hogwarts on paper in the original 7 novels written by J.K Rowling or as a feast for the eyes in the 8 screen adaptions? Let us know and why!

Like the books but really love the movies more. Just loved to see it all brought to life.

What they said. Seeing all the work that went into the Wizard world is still one of the best cinematic experience I can recall.

My ultimate favorite HP book is Order of the Phoenix. Sirius Black is my favorite character of all times and I am awaiting JK Rowling to create a new book on James Potter and Sirius Black from when they were at Hogwarts. It would be a dream come true.

Overall I prefer books, but this is one of the only fantasy series that I haven't read the books yet.

Post Books or Movies

I prefer the books. JKR does such a brilliant job of worldbuilding. The Potterworld is so detailed that there is no way of showing every aspect on film. Also, movies based on books are rarely better than the source material.

I definitely prefer books. So many details have been missed in the movies, but I guess it would take much more time to record and direct. Also they obviously separated Deathly Hallows for financial reasons, but oh well

Books. Because Harry's not as annoying in them. And there's just more in them.

Books, mainly due to its emphasis on secondary characters who aren't as prominent in the films

Although the movies do have a 'sense of magic' that the books don't

I agree, also I find it hard to watch the movies without remembering scenes from the books that were left out

Hello there. I like books more than movies because usually in books everything is written more precisely, picturesque and colorfully. Also when you read a book and then watch a movie you can find lots of differences.

I like the books more simply because there's more detail in them. Plus I can tolerate Ginny Weasley a lot more than I can when watching her in the films, as she isn't my favorite character.

I'd rather watch the movies than read the books, because reading takes longer and it's exhausting sometimes with those endless pages... but, I have to know the full story and the right order of events, which only the books can give me...

The books for sure, always.
I like the films, but the books have all sorts of small humours details that just help really bring the world to life.
I also think the books have almost always got a sort of iron clad logic to them when it comes to the rules of magic and the way muggles and wizards coexist - the films are a lot looser on this logic, which i think makes it way easier for plot holes to form! x

I loved the movies bit I prefer the books because of the details they always contained and allowing me to use my imagination. But hey enjoyed both.

I prefer both, but if I had to choose, I rather like the books because it's easier to imagine in every scene in the book

The films are amazing cinematic portrayals.... the casting in 75% is spot on, special effects well done.... but the books... they created visions of each of the landscapes and inserted the drama of each conversation and dangerous place and person. Too much to overcome the brain's own imagery imho. However the heart forgives, and with so much happening, the films are still a successful medium.

As someone who is currently re-reading the series for the tenth time, I have to say I enjoy the books better than the movies. So much more detail, and much more humor!

I love reading, sometimes too much, I think. The books just spark that imagination in me that made the books so special when I first read them. It brings back that old wonder. I'll always love the movies, but the books are kind of inspiring as an aspiring writer.

I love both, I really do. And I honestly believe that the movies are good, they are entertaining and easy enough to follow if you haven't read the books. However, nothing will ever top the books for me. The background stories we get, the characters that we never got to see in the movies, and all the layers that the movies didn't portray accuately... it has to be books.

I like the books better, only because As a kid, I enjoyed imagining the entire world of Harry Potter as I saw it. Although it was also fun to watch that world come to life when the movies came out

I love books more because there aren't story lines cut out. For example Hermione turned Rita Skeeter into a bug and kept her in a jar for an entire term and the books don't cover that. Or how about in the fifth book when there are all these rooms the kids have to go through in the Ministry, and yet the movie only covers two. The books are so much more in depth than the movies.
