Default Welcome to Ollivanders

Welcome to Ollivanders! Every young witch and wizard's most important step into the magical world is getting their first wand. Their life long (and other times, not so long) tool in helping them become the wonderful and brilliant witch or wizard they are! Since 382 B.C. Ollivanders has helped all kinds of people be matched with the perfect wand, and it is very rare for someone to be sent away empty handed. Although passed down to one shopkeeper after another and no longer owned by the Ollivander family, the shop itself and quality of wands is still much the same as it was when it first opened, perhaps even better!

ooc: please note, if you missed getting your results at any point, or need a reminder of one of your character's on-site wands, you can PM Felixir to receive them - we have all results recorded since 2067 in the school RP!

Display Shelves
Entering the shop, you'll notice a cozy little area to the left, filled with a couple of sturdy and actually pleasant looking chairs in front of the rather large window with a rug underfoot. Not to mention an array of flowers in vases of varying colors and shapes. From here you can watch the chaos of children being matched with their first wands. Tea and coffee is available for parents while they wait for their children to be matched with their wands.

There is a display of wands here in a glass case, some of them once owned by famous witches and wizards and labelled as such. Recognize any names? That's fine, but don't touch. They are part of a personal collection, on loan to Ollivanders, and are not for sale. There is also a display of holsters, polishes, and other bits and pieces. Nearby is a shelf of books on wand-related topics, also on loan to Ollivanders. You are permitted to read them if you like, but they are not for sale. If you attempt to take them out of the store they will snap at your fingers, so be warned.

Of course if you are here for repairs or inquiries, you'll be able to bypass the line that tends to form over the summer months, and come to the counter. Here you can see about your damaged wand being fixed, or find out about customizing your wand if you are the sort who likes things a little fancier. Engraving prices are listed on the inventory board.

Wand Fitting
Just as you enter the shop, in between all the chaos that may or may not have been going on, is a rather open area with a measuring tape that seems to be hovering in mid air. It wiggles and flies around, ready to measure the next customer to walk into it's range. The measuring tape will eagerly measure your height, the reach of your arm, and maybe even other strange measurements to help the wandmakers find the best wand for you.

In front of the counter there is the empty space that is designated as the fitting area. Here is where wands are fitted. After being measured by the magical measuring tape, you will be assisted by a worker who will then endeavor to fit you with your perfect wand and start pulling boxes from the shelves.

The shelves with wands on them stretch back impossibly far and up so high that even the tallest people have to tip their head back to see the tops. Long sliding ladders are attached to every stretch of shelves, and the wandmakers make great use of these to reach those wands which are tucked away high up. There seems to be a filing system of sorts, some kind of method to the madness, though most of the boxes are unmarked. Is it a colour code? Or is it shape? size? smell? Something else? Well you'll never know unless you get a job here. Luckily, and out of sheer necessity, these shelves have been bespelled so that wandboxes are not in danger of flying everywhere due to errant spells cast by children wielding their new wands.

Wand Weighing
Large and made of brass, the wand-weigher machine has a scale in front where you can place your wand. There is a small plaque on the front which states it was made in Paris in 1860, which begs the question, why does it print out little cards in English? Well that would be because the machine has been recently modified with brand new charms. There's a coin slot on the front. One sickle will get you an assessment of your wand's condition. A flick of a hidden switch will return it to its regular function, in which case the card which it spits out will state the wand components, and the age of the wand, instead of recommending products for it.

Originally housed at the French Ministry of Magic in Paris, this Wand-Weigher Machine began to act up a decade or so ago and had been sitting in storage until previous shop owner Ira Banner acquired it, fixed it up, and gave it new purpose. It no longer simply tells what a wand is made from (since the wandmakers themselves are perfectly able to do this without magical help), instead it assess the condition of a wand and suggests what product might benefit it. Of course, you can always get a second opinion from one of the wandmakers...

Counter
Ollivanders is a long and narrow shop, with impossibly tall and crooked shelves making up the majority of its space, but this is as far as the Wizarding public are permitted to go unaccompanied. Here is the counter, a thick, rustic slab of darkest mahogany, worn smooth from years of use. On top of the counter sits an old fashioned brass cash register which seems to have a mind of its own. It toots and whistles and lets off steam as purchases are entered into it and the drawer pops out jauntily to receive payment, and if anyone tries to get into it, an obnoxious caterwauling charm will go off. Best not to try, it knows how to defend itself.

On the wall next to the counter there is an inventory board, which lists every product sold and service provided at Ollivanders aside from the wands themselves. If you wish to buy a holster, or any polishes or wand care products, this is where you should look. The products themselves are displayed on the racks and in baskets attached to one side of the counter.

ABOUT
Zeke was born into a family of muggles, the second oldest of five siblings, and was the only one of his siblings to display signs of magic and to be given a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. However, far from expressing amazement and pride at having a wizard in the family, Zeke's parents made it clear they did not approve of his magical ability, and Zeke made the difficult decision to leave the family home and cut ties in favour of studying magic. He lived instead with an aunt, who cared deeply for him as a mother would have.

At Hogwarts, Zeke easily made plenty of friends and did well in school, but although he had an intense love of learning and was in awe of Hogwarts, he disliked formal education. He pursued many of his topics of interest outside of the classroom, while being sure to keep his grades up. One of these interests was wandlore, and Zeke knew as early as his first year at Hogwarts that this was what he wanted to pursue when he left school.

Zeke's aunt had been a short-term foster carer since before he'd gone to live with her, and as she dealt with many sensitive cases, it was often necessary for Zeke to spend several weeks each summer holiday staying with different friends of his, which he did quite happily. He spent a lot of time with his friend Eden and his family, and was soon considered another member of the family there, warmly welcomed into the fold. For a short time he dated Eden's older sister, Willow, though the relationship was generally lukewarm and never became serious. Having grown so close to Eden's family, Zeke officially moved in with them after he graduated from Hogwarts, though he still regularly visited his aunt.

Although Zeke had secured a place on a Wandlore course at Wizarding University, and it was still his dream to be a wandmaker or a wandlore researcher, he lacked enthusiasm about higher education. Zeke started having serious doubts, and was lost on how to deal with them. He expressed this uncertainty to Camden Mitchell, Eden's father, who promptly advised him to chase his dream from a slightly different angle. Camden was a wealthy and well-known businessman, who had a number of connections across the global wizarding community, and so it was simple for him to set Zeke up in a paid apprenticeship with a specialist wandmaker. Zeke was endlessly grateful, gave up his place on the university course shortly before term started, and dove right into the practical side of wandmaking. In his spare time, he read and studied on his own, researching wandlore and as many secondary and tertiary subjects he could cram into his brain. He and his mentor produced wands for customers, researched, travelled around the world, and experimented with new combinations and cores.

During this time, Zeke moved out of the Mitchells' home and into a new place with his friend, Mathias Kruus, shortly after Mathias graduated from Hogwarts. Mathias was Eden's cousin, and he and Zeke had become good friends, having known each other since school. Zeke and Mathias had decided it would be fun for them to have their own place together. Neither expected to fall in love with the other, but that was exactly what happened. Within eighteen months, they were married. After a few years, they decided to adopt a child, and after a long wait, Zeke and Mathias adopted two year old twin girls, Bailey and Sage, in September 2099.

By 2102, Zeke had worked his way up through the wandmaking profession and was working as a partner to the woman who had previously been his mentor. As fulfilling as his work was, Zeke wanted a change, something that was a little closer to home, required less travelling, had a steadier income, and allowed him more time to work on the books he had been wanting to write for several years. Just when he was considering a slight career track correction and working towards being a professor of Wandlore, the opportunity to take over management of Ollivanders opened up. Zeke knew that, while it was just about possible for him to buy the business on his own, it was too much of a risk for him to take when he was helping support his family. But, once again, pseudo-father and part-time deus ex machina, Camden Mitchell, came swooping in to save the day. He joined with Zeke and they bought Ollivanders together in 2103, with Camden acting as a silent partner. Zeke and his family moved to the apartment above the wand shop, and began the newest chapter in their lives.

The Magical Measuring Tape:
If you are here for a new wand you will encounter this measuring tape which will take all sorts of measurements from you, including arm length, inseam, height, and sometimes measurements of other seemingly odd areas. Bridge of your nose? Maybe. Length of your jaw? Perhaps. Girth of your knee? Sometimes. Best thing to do is cooperate, and it'll be done faster.

SPOILER!!: Magical Measuring Tape, NPC

Name: Magical Measuring Tape
Age: 16 in Measuring Tape Years, as it is now a teenager, it sulks periodically.
Current Occupation: Measuring tape at Ollivanders
Description: Made entirely of an off-white, almost cream coloured cloth with large numbers in black marking its measurements -only these measurements seem to be more than meets the eye, they even change depending on exactly what it is measuring.
Personality: Much like an overeager puppy, the measuring tape gets a little too enthusiastic at times. It really wants to help you though and loves showing off the measurements it has collected. Often tries to give 'hugs' which, because its a measuring tape, sometimes results in near-strangulation.
History: This measuring tape used to have an antique wind up leather case, but once it was charmed to become a MAGICAL measuring tape and put to work at Ollivanders, it decided that it was far too constraining for it and has ever since whipped, wiggled, and weaved around in its full glory.

The Old Brass Wand-Weigher Machine:
If you linger near the entrance way you will see an interesting looking brass contraption. It looks very old and yet there seems to be a few newer attachments here and there, including a coin slot. This machine will, if you put your wand on the scale, recommend which wand care products your wand could use to better its condition. The machine will whir and pop and squeak and then it will spit out a little gilded card with product recommendations on it. Lucky for you said products can be bought right here at Ollivanders.

SPOILER!!: The Old Brass Wand-Weigher Machine, NPC

Name: Wand-Weigher Machine
Age: It has a small metal plaque on it which states it was made in Paris, in 1860.
Current Occupation: Wand-Weigher Machine at Ollivanders

There is a small plaque on the front which states it was made in Paris in 1860, which begs the question, why does it print out little cards in English? Well that would be because the machine has been modified with brand new charms in order to serve the Ollivanders customers. There's a coin slot on the front. One sickle will get you an assessment of your wand's condition. A flick of a hidden switch will return it to its regular function, in which case the card which it spits out will state the wand components, and the age of the wand, instead of recommending products for it.

Polishes, Salves, Rubs, and Oils:
Wand Polish - 1 Galleon, 8 Sickles
This is the most common and effective applicable wand product. Most people polish a wand for purely cosmetic purposes, as the polish allows for a nice shine to come up on the length of the wood. Aside from the shine, it also smooths a wand and allows for a more comfortable grip without making the wand slippery. This should be rubbed into the wand wood at least once a month or after a sustained duel. A soft polishing cloth should be used to apply the polish and it should be buffed until the polish is no longer visible.

Wand conditioning oil - 4 Galleons
Wand conditioning oil is your best bet if your wand has sustained a few cracks, scrapes, scratches or marks as it prevents the wand from drying out and stress fractures from forming as a result of apparently minimal damage. It helps to repair these small damages and when it does not do so 100%, often means a full repair by a wandmaker will work better due to the conditioning treatment having been applied already. It also has the added benefit of allowing the natural shine, colour and tone of the wood to come through, and should be applied a few times a year or more often if your wand sees a lot of use.

Wand Strengthening Oil - 4 Galleons
Strengthening oil, unlike wand polish and conditioning oil, helps to make sure a wand will not snap or crack under pressure. Over time it also increases the quality of a wand, though never more than a degree or so in the flexibility classification scale. A strengthening oil should generally be applied every few years and left to soak into the wood overnight.

Wand Waterproofing Rub - 2 Galleons, 20 Knuts
particularly good for those who spend a lot of time underwater, it primarily is a way of ensuring the wand core does not sustain water damage. Using wand waterproofing rub on the length of the wand helps to ensure that any miniscule channels to the core are sealed up. It lasts 6-8 days per application. Wand conditioning oil should always be applied beneath the waterproofing rub to be sure that the wood itself does not dry out.

Wand fireproofing rub - 4 Galleons, 12 Sickles, 1 Knut
While a wand has a certain amount of protection from fire on its own, for anyone who works with magical fire creatures, this rub is a must. It protects against charring and ensures the wand will not catch on fire. Each application lasts up to six weeks.

Magical Resonance Protection Salve - 4 Galleons, 15 Sickles, 2 Knuts
The salve will help protect a wand from absorbing and discharging potentially damaging negative and emotionally-charged energy. For overly emotional individuals or those with particularly sensitive wands, this salve is a must have. It should be massaged into the wood daily, and buffed out with a soft cloth. When applying, it is important that you are calm and quiet, and not in a hurry. After the initial treatment process, it can be reapplied once every 3-4 months to maintain a healthy wand.

Wand Barrier Oil - 2 Galleons, 1 Knut
This is an all-purpose oil to protect sensitive skin against wood allergies or against specialty woods such as poisonwood. It also is an excellent product to apply to your wand if you work with potions regularly and wish to ensure your wand is not compromised during the brewing process.

Wand boxes and cases
A wand box is important for storing or carrying a wand that is not in use. All Ollivanders wands are stored in boxes in order to prevent wands from cross-contaminating one another magically or from warping with time and age. When applying any treatments, it is often a good idea to apply it and then store your wand in its wand box over night to allow the product to settle and take effect. Unlined cases feature a wooden mount which will hold your wand safely. Engravings are extra.

Cardboard boxes - free with wand or 10 Sickles
wooden boxes - 2 Galleons for the basic box, to match your wand wood ask for a Quote.
Leather Cases (choose your colour) - 6 Galleons

felt lining - 1 Galleon, 10 Sickles

fur lining - 3 Galleons, 10 Sickles
