Default Which changes from book to film did you like and dislike most?

Many parts of the books were left out in the movies. Sometimes entire characters were left uncast (Winky, Ludo Bagman) and sometimes entire changes or lack of scenes happened (Lack of quidditch in OOTP). What changes irked you more than any? And what changes did you like or think was smart on the part of the screenwriter and director?

I can start. I was upset at the lack of house elves throughout Hogwarts, as well as there being no Peeves shown or mentioned. As for scenes though, I thought it was smart of Yates to not have a battle in Hogwarts at the end of HBP. There was "the big one" coming in the next book. Two in three movies could have been redundant and looked too similar, especially coming after the Ministry Battle in OOTP.

Discuss! And keep it civil! Everyone has different opinions that may be controversial or different than the status quo (*cough* I hate Ginny *cough*).

I think the scene where Harry and voldemort battle it out for the last time was rather disappointing, don't get me wrong it was a good scene, however in the book they were surrounded by the school. In the movie it was just them outside.. It wasn't anything major but it kind of bothered me when I saw it.

these changes from book to film are why i'm rereading the entire series. I don't want the films to brainwash their storylines into me.

Definitely the battle sequence in DH which was brilliant in the book but a let down in the movie in my eyes

The Quidditch World Cup in GoF. I was furious the first time I saw it in theaters. It could have been so awesome. But it really doesn't advance the plot all that much and from a pace/timing standpoint I can understand.

Cutting the Department of Mysteries scene by what could have been a good half hour... Sigh...

The lack of a fight at Hogwarts at the end of HBP. Yeah, yeah, "We didn't want to spoil the epic fight that will be in DH Pt. 2," Dude, I want a battle scene. I don't really care about the implications it has on Part 2. Jo managed to pull it off in the books!

They completely ruined Ginny Weasley in the movies. She's supposed to be a stunningly gorgeous, fiery, independent girl. She's nowhere near this in the films, we only get little inklings of it.

Because of cutting Dobby out, I liked how they had Neville accomplish practically everything Dobby did for Harry in 4 and 5 (Gillyweed, Room of Requirment, etc.) Very elegant.

Im missing the anger that Harry felt at Book 5... when I read the 5th book i could feel the Harry's anger because of what is happening specially when Harry and Dumbledore talk at the end of the book, i totally missed that feeling on the movie

Let me start at the start. Hogwarts. There are NO moving staircases in any of the books. This bit of "movie bling" drives me crazy. All the bits of "movie bling" drive me batty. I call it "movie bling" because it is not anywhere in the books, and it seems just thrown in to make Hogwarts seem cool to the movie goers. In the reality of the books, Hogwarts is so much more awesome.
Also, in the half blood prince, I am offended by the whole "Ginny helping Harry hide the potions book" thing. SO DID NOT HAPPEN LIKE THAT!

A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.

I personally didn't like any of the changes they made in the movie. All I wish is for all the film to be loyal to the books. A few changes or lines to make us laugh will be good enough, why change so many?

If I was to list the changes I disliked the most, it would probably go on forever (the final duel of Harry and Voldemort, the way the Half-Blood Prince was filmed, etc). Let's just say that I dislike any changes in the movie that made the plot/story...unreasonable.

I wished they'd put my favourite part in:
Snape: Do you remember me telling you, Potter, that we were using NON-VERBAL spells?
Harry: Yes.
Snape: Yes, SIR.
Harry: There's no need to call me sir, Professor.

I have three big things that irked me. 1: The exclusion of the house elves in Goblet of Fire. It was a central part of the story to me. 2: Not having Quidditch in Order of the Phoenix, that was a bit important for Half-Blood Prince, in that Ron and Ginny would already have had some experience with Quidditch. 3: The Gaunt house and sub-storyline. It was completely left out! That was one of the things I was looking forward to most in the movie, but they didn't put it in!

I think the final 'showdown' bewteen Harry and Voldemort where Voldemort finally dies could have been bigger_It's the killing of Voldemort after all!
I suppose, it it were possible they could have included as much of the book as possible in the film as they could have split some other films in two and the journey would have been longer.
Also, in Order of the Phoenix, they could have at least included Luna's Quidditch commentry because I think it expresses her personality a lot.

First, the relation Ron/Hermione in the Order of the Phoenix, when they were prefects, the tension with Harry.
Then, in the Deathly Hallows, the history of Dumbledore, and the torture of Hermione.
I like Neville in the final he's so great.

Book to movie: the battle in HBP, some Fred and George parts and a couple minor scenes.
But there are also some lines that are in the movies and aren't in the books that I liked. Tbh, I wasn't really satisfied with the ending of DH. Even in the book it felt kinda shortened and lacked emotion..

I didn't like any of the changes that were made. In GoF, it would've been better if they had given more importance to the World Cup. The exclusion of house-elves angered me as well.

In OotP, they should have given more importance to the Dept of Mysteries scene. That could've given the dreadfully boring movie an interesting half-an-hour.

And I think they completely destroyed Ginny in the movies. She's supposed to be brave, gorgeous and independent, but in the movies she's shown as an over-emotional and weak girl

The DH movies were a big disappointment for me (especially part 2). There were so many things I hated, I don't even know where to start. But overall what generally irked me was the lack of one important poltergeist: Peeves. It just made me so angry. I don't even understand why they left him out.
However if you push aside all the things I hate there are many things I love as well. For example I liked almost all the actors/actress', they fit the characters almost perfectly. Especially in the first movie. I loved the animals and magical creatures and items. And I fell in love with Hogwarts for the second time. All the magic, the portreyes, the rooms and classrooms, the dungeons and so on. İt was wonderfull.
But still, none of the movies could take the place of the books in my heart.

The FORK. Be afraid.

I definitely wished they would have kept Peeves in the movies.

And as for changes I did like, I like the fact that they hinted that Neville and Luna would get together.

1. Changes I liked

Philosopher's Stone
- cutting the Harry-Malfoy duel (too childish)

Chamber of Secrets:
- cutting the deathday party (too boring)

Prisoner of Azkaban:
- a slightly more deranged Trelawney
- the two songs: Double Trouble and A Winter's Spell (the latter I want to have so badly)

Goblet of Fire:
- Moaning Myrtle being playful (her crush on Harry should have been clearer in the books)
- no Ludo Bagman (it was, after all, a fairly unimportant subplot)
- John Williams being replaced by Patrick Doyle (what a spectacular score)
- Harry/Hermione scenes, she genuinely cares about him

Half-Blood Prince:
- the scene in the beginning with Ginny and Mrs Weasley
- Ginny feeding Harry
- Ginny helping him with the book
- the added Burrow battle scene
- no Luna Quidditch commentary
- no crazy Malfoy obsession (quite disturbing)

Deathly Hallows:
- Hermione and Harry dancing (I'm sorry but Ron is a lousy husband, she deserves better)
- Hermione being tortured, best desperate screams I ever heard

2. Changes I didn't like

Chamber of Secrets:
- the entire cheesy ending (why is the entire hall clapping for Hagrid?!)

Prisoner of Azkaban:
- the Shrunken Head waffling through the DVD interviews (kill it, please)

Goblet of Fire:
- the short Quidditch World Cup, but then again, who can blame Newell for WB's obsession with short movies?
- the third task
- no Mrs Weasley hugging Harry, it showed her being maternal towards him better than anything else

Order of the Phoenix:
- moody Harry (we need capslock Harry)
- no failed Cho and Harry date (what the hell?!)
- no Rita Skeeter
- no bigger Snape's worst memory
- no career advice
- no R/H prefect issues
- Nicholas Hooper's music, slightly too simple
- basically the entire movie...

Half-Blood Prince:
- no fiery Ginny
- no Gaunt or Morfin, we don't know anything about Voldemort's past now except him being a creepy teenager)
- no Slughorn stalking Harry
- no common room kiss
- no battle after Dumbledore's death
- no Dumbledor's funeral (could anyone please explain me how cutting that influenced DH?)

Deathly Hallows:
- no Dumbledore history (why mention it if you don't want to properly explain it anyway?)
- Ron's radio obsession
- all the awkward unscored silences while Desplat wrote music for some of them
- no discussion after Bathilda Bagshot
(oh, she jsut changes into Nagini, fair enough, no big deal...)

- no complete flashback of Harry's parents being killed (honestly, you have 4 freaking hours at your disposal!)
- Lovegood's 'NO YOU CAN'T!'
- the final showdown between Harry and Voldemort (why is V making all these primal sounds and why no applause when Voldemort is killed?)
- the Great Hall scene afterwards without music and respect for Harry (we need emotion, there, Yates...)
- the fact that two movies manage to ruin a perfect script
- DH2 being the shortest of all 8 films
- David Yates's approach in general to Voldemort: Newell gave him lines and makes him scary

As I've said in another thread, my favorite change was in DH Part 1 when Harry and Hermione dance.

Changes I disliked were:
* The Burrow burning in HBP.
* Eliminating the Gaunt backstory in HBP.
* Harry breaking the Elder Wand in pieces in DH Part 2 instead of using it to repair his own wand first.
* Eliminating Dursley scenes in GOF and HBP. Also, they should have retained the deleted scene in DH Part 1 when Harry says his goodbyes to the Dursleys.
* Making Durmstrang all boys and Beauxbatons all girls in GOF.
* Eliminating the Lockhart scene at St. Mungo's in OOTP (maybe kind of trivial, but I would have liked to see him again if only for a few minutes).

They cut out so much from OOTP and I will never forgive that fact.

They cut out a lot of the fight at the ministry and that was my favorite part of the books. I stayed up a really long time to read that part, I broke bedtime to read that part. It makes me SO mad.

Not to mention in the Deathly Hallows, there was this GREAT deleted scene where Harry says what might be his final goodbye to the Dursleys. It was great. It showed that they didn't quite hate each other, their hatred wasn't to the core. I'm so mad they cut that.

I hate how Ginny in the movies were not like Ginny in the books!! The ginny in the books were vivacious, active, fun, confident. Ginny in the movies just fell into the background.
