Default What HP movie addition HURT the films?
Curly Haired Prefect || Rebel Scum | | Let's keep things Loki || Neville Fan Mädchen

We all know when adapting books to movies, sometimes things are added that are NOT in the books. Sometimes it helps and actually fixes issues with the original book. Other times…maybe we should have just let things be, ya know?

Which scene / detail was added to the movies that you think actually hindered the movies? Why? Could things about it have been fixed to make it better? Or should they just never have bothered with some bits in the first place?

The HP movies left out A LOT of pretty good scenes which always bothered me. There were a few additions that didn't mind. However, there was ONE that bugs me EVERYTIME: the scene in DA where Hermione fixed Harry's glasses in the second movie. Like... WHY? J. K. Rowling specified so many times in the books that underage magic wasn't allowed. With the addition of that scene, all witches and wizards should have been doing magic, at least while in DA.

I didn't really think anything they added took anything away from the story.

For me, I think the scene where Bellatrix burns down the Burrow in HBP was just so RANDOM. Like this wanted witch risks comes out to a gathering with a TON of Order members to do...what? What purpose did that serve? It seemingly was repaired quickly after that since they went back there for the wedding of Bill and Fleur a few months later. It was just so dumb and random and also no one seemed concerned that their family home and all their belongings were burnt to a crisp??

Just always bothers me

I won't mention the Ginny and Ron diabolical that the writers inflicted on their characters since the movies display it enough. But.... in the same movie (Half-Blood Prince) the diner scene with Harry in the beginning, I've no clue what purpose that scene served. Harry just looked awkward talking with the girl who would get stood up and never be seen/mentioned again. Then him going "But I AM the chosen one" when Hermione brought up why Romilda was interested in him.

I did enjoy Half-Blood Prince overall since it's entertaining to watch, but those moments that go against book canon are the main flaws that inflict the rule "Don't read before watching this".

According to my research, they probably were. I mean you have to perform a bit of magic anyway in order to find out which one has "selected" you. If your issue is why didn't we see people performing spells all over Diagon Alley, then what spells would they really be doing? Maybe wingardium leviosa for the lazy students, but then we can just assume nobody there that day was being lazy. Usually, my approach when media doesn't explain something that would involve depicting something mundane, or the answer itself is mundane, is basically Occam's Razor.
