Welcome to Diagon Alley! Please read through this boring yet necessary FAQ before you RP in this forum.

What's the point?
Diagon Alley has been set up for three major reasons. First, we wanted to give students a place to spend their time between terms. We know you get bored waiting for us, so this is an alternative. Second, we hope that new students will fine-tune their RP skills and start to develop their characters in this forum by RPing with advanced players. This forum is a taste of the school RP. Third, we wanted to give the Ministry RPers a place outside of the Ministry walls to spend some time interacting with each other in a non-work environment.

Wait! Ministry RPers are here too?
This is our most recent change to Diagon Alley. Diagon Alley will be open to student characters much the same way it has been in the past - in between terms ONLY, while Ministry employees will be allowed to post their Ministry characters here year-round. All members will be allowed to post both their student and Ministry characters during the appropriate times (breaks between terms).

How will I know when I'm not allowed to post my student character anymore?
As soon as the Hogwarts Express threads are posted in the School RPG forum, posting your student characters in Diagon Alley should cease; however, you will still be allowed to post your Ministry character in Diagon Alley after this point and your student character in the School RPG forum. Likewise, when the Hogwarts Express threads close at the end of term, feel free to begin posting your student characters once more in Diagon Alley!

What do I do here?
Chat with your friends, buy your school supplies for your student characters, purchase household goods for your Ministry character, RP to your heart's content. As always, SS forum rules apply. Don't spam, swear, post inappropriate content, or harass your peers. You CAN be banned from this forum.

Some member is telling me what to do! Should I bother listening?
All the school staff are spending their time getting the school ready and Ministry Department Heads are engulfed in overseeing their departments, so we picked our shopkeepers from those who are most experienced in the school and Ministry RP and have proven themselves reliable. These people are equivalent to Ministry Department and Division heads and their word is law, so follow their directions and advice or face lemondrop13's and my adminny wrath. If in doubt, all keepers have their title below their name.

In addition, you may want to listen to other members simply because they're knowledgable and often are just trying to make your RP experience more enjoyable and realistic.

I want to be a shopkeeper! Can I make up my own position?
While we appreciate your enthusiasm, we have all the staff and shops we need at this time. Your suggestions are always welcome, however, and you can PM lemondrop13 and/or me directly with them.

Can I RP as someone other than my school character?
You are free to RP as anyone you want (other than a shopkeeper). We recommend you RP your school character and/or your Ministry character simply for the sake of clarity and continuity. Please note: you may ONLY RP as your own character(s). Don't RP as yourself and then someone else's character. It isn't proper RP protocol and is considered very rude.

Why exactly aren't we RPing our student characters in the school right now?
The school closes between terms to get ready for the next term. Soon enough, the Diagon Alley will close to student characters and you'll be headed off on the Hogwarts Express.

Is there a list of supplies I need to get for the School RPG? What if I don't get everything?
At this time, there IS a supply list in the thread just below this one. Your staff has listed all the books and supplies you will need. Never fear... even if you are playing a first year, you may buy supplies for any class. You don't have to 'purchase' anything to attend the school. Just play it like you have the supplies you need.

There is also a lot of information about the School RP, in general, in the Hogwarts School FAQ that you might want to take a look at.

If you have any other questions, please ask. Of course, if you ask when the sorting starts/ends, when the Express starts, when the term starts, or anything I just answered above, I'm free to thwip you. All important dates are posted on the front page of the site.

You can go to Gringotts and RP taking out some money, or exchanging muggle currency for wizard currency. But if you don't want to do that, then you can just RP having money, assume you've already gone to Gringotts.

And don't worry, it's not a stupid question at all.

You don't HAVE to choose a name, but you're welcome to. You may use your own name if you want to, but you can create a whole new character with a personality of his/her own. Many people do this in the RP, and it's quite fun when you play a whole different person than yourself.

And it's not stupid, don't be afraid to ask questions.

You can decide what year your student character will be, but many members prefer to begin as first year students. However, the choice is ultimately yours to make.

When you decide which year your student character will be, it helps to remain in that year for the duration of the school term (avoids confusion).

I agree. What I did was I RP'ed that my charrie (Shane Prince) got sorted in the Great Hall much like Draco was in the movie. (I RPed details like: the hat had hardly touched his head when it blurted out "SLYTHERIN!" and Shane smirked as he strutted off to the corresponding table.)

Just to add to what Lizzie said, we really discourage people from using OOC comments. If you have to tell someone something, even good-bye, you can do it via PM. It really clutters up our threads to have OOC comments.

No not stupid nor weird. ^^ What you actually do here, is practice your RPing skills and if you've never RPed you could try it out! Just make up a Character of your own, and control it's actions. Like let's say you want your charrie to pick up something. You may type it like this:

Walking down the street, Jasmine dropped her purse. Sighing, she bent down and picked it.

See it's very simple. And not that hard to write ^^

As for the train. A forum for the Hogwarts Express will be opened the day the train leaves. You RP your character riding the train. The train opens for a few days then closes for the classes and grounds to open

RP stands for Role Play. And RPing is just taking up a role and playing it (quite simply

) It's not stupid, don't worry, you'll figure it out. Think of it like acting, but in words instead of out loud. You take up a role (your character) and play them out =) It's quite fun, really.

That's alright =) Think of it as if you're telling a story, except the story is comprised of numerous characters and you control only one of them (with exception of your family during Diagon Alley). You've created a character and the first thing they want to do is shop, right? So you RP them walking down the street. For example. My school character is Jamie:

Jamie was bored as he wandered down the street. There was so many people around him it was hard to squeeze through with all his bags in hand.

It can be as simple as that or as complex as you want. You can use your posts to describe their physical attributes:

Jamie shook his dark curls out of his eyes. They always bounced around and hid his eyes. It was mostly habitual now that he even pushed them up.

If you want to know how other's make their characters, click here where many others have posted their way of creating a character. if you still need any help or just can't be bothered reading through those posts, feel free to PM me, other experienced RPers or Mods and Admins and they will tell you more about it.

And about the dating issues. You can again PM me, experienced RPers, or mods and admins anytime you want.

You don't need to do anything and there is not internet in the wizarding world so no online shopping. It depends on the background of your character.

If your character is a muggleborn, then they could bring muggle money 'i.e. Pounds, Dollers' into Gringotts Wizarding Bank and ask them to exchange it for Wizarding money and if your character is from a poor wizarding family, then they have money, but they tend to buy only how much they can afford. And say your character is from a rich wizarding family, you just assume that you have all the money to buy everything you want.

Oh no, we don't have an inventory system here in SS. So the stuff you'd buy wouldn't show up anywhere. Except for you wand where when you buy your wand you can go to your Control Panel and edit your profile and see that it has a description of your wand. You can put up the wand that you've bought there.

Well, you can choose to RP going to Gringotts and taking money out if you like, but you can also just assume that your character already has money in his/her pockets. As for buying things, you don't HAVE to go into every store and buy the things you would need for a year at Hogwarts, however, feel free to go into all the threads (shops) and RP buying the wand, books, uniforms, stationary and potions supplies if you want to.

In RPG, the purchase of items is pretend. YOU are the sole person who chooses whether you find all your items or not. So, you may roleplay that you bought the cauldron or---well, not. However, let it be known that in the books going to Hogwarts without a cauldron would most likely mean not being able to take potions.

When witches and wizards first get their acceptance letter from Hogwarts they are supplied with a list of items they need to buy for First Years. Every summer after that, the students would receive a letter with a list of new items they needed to purchase.

According to the HP books:
Cauldron: Cauldron shop
Telescope, set brass scales, glass/crystal phials: The second hand junk shop
Potions ingredients kit: Apothecary

However, we don't have those shops in the SS RP Diagon Alley. But don't panic! You don't have to RP buying every single thing on the list... just like we don't RP professional quidditch matches, or Obscurus Books the publisher, the second hand robe shop, stationary supplies, street peddlars, Knockturn Alley, Terrortours, Twilfit & Tattings, Gambol & Japes, the Daily Prophet offices, etc. BUT we do just assume they are there, pretend as it were.

Like we've always said, you do not need to RP yourself buying everything to have them. We don't keep track of everything your character owns, so just pretend... Like post on the street that you just bought your cauldron, but you don't actually have to do it, you know?
