Default Scribbulus Writing Implements

In the end north side of the street of Diagon Alley, sandwiched between Quality Quidditch Supplies and an intersecting alley that leads to Knockturn Alley, sits a small building made of light grey stones. A peal of small bells made of gold tinkle together in a rather quiet unison as the glass door of the shop opens and reveals the stationary supplies store, which is brightly lit thanks to the front glass window that allows sunlight to filter inside the shop. The smell of the store is a surprisingly pleasant combination of wood, old parchment, ink and, shockingly enough, scented candles.

Every single inch of the store seems to be crammed with shelves full of the artifacts sold at the shop, and though it might look and sound messy, the place is surprisingly organized, and whatever item that costumers might be looking for, can undoubtedly be found easily; rolls of parchment, stationery sets, quills made of the most unthinkable and exotic feathers, and every imaginable sort of decorative paper -– you think of it, and this store has it. Inks are the place's specialty, and as such, here you'll find ink of every colour and style that you could possibly imagine.

Behind the tall and smooth wooden counter, the shopkeeper can normally be found. With a frown on his forehead, the shopkeeper is usually busy sorting through piles of parchment, which would be stock orders, bills, magazines, or just plain letters that have been addressed to him. This is the place where you come if you are in need of help, or to pay for the items you wish to acquire at Scribbulus Writing Implements.

Charlie tucked a curl behind her ear and slipped inside one of her favorite places in Diagon Alley. She always felt extremely comfortable hanging out among the ink lining the walls. It was her nerdiest qualities. She was into inks and using different colors for different things. Although she hadn't used much of her letter paper the previous year because of the whole no owl things, but she wanted something nice if she was going to be returning to Hogwarts in the fall. As much as it worried her she figured if they were going to harm people like her they would do it anywhere. Following the wall around the room she continued to glance at all the options in front of her.

With her hair officially down past her shoulder again after last years escapade into short hair territory, Aurelie couldn’t help but plait her hair into an elaborate weave for today’s escapade into Diagon Alley or more specifically, Scribbulus Writing Improvements.

With the sun bearing down on her slender shoulders, she had finally decided to make her way over to the shop and dip in briefly to get the supplies she needed for her last year at Hogwarts. She had planned on spending more time in the different shops around Diagon Alley but the sun was simply too nice to waste and besides, the summer dress that she was wearing itself just didn’t belong surrounded by tomes and old pieces of parchment.

Surrounded by the shelves full of various artifacts sold at the shop, Aurelie walked with determination through the isles with determination only stopped every so often to gather the few things that she knew she needed.

Phoenix Tail Feather Quills? Check
Everlasting Inc? Check
Enchanted Planner? Check

And now to find parchment. If only…she could find it. Sighing, she stopped for a moment and turned to another Hogwarts student that she thought she vaguely recognised. “Hey, excuse me? Hi. Do you know where the parchment is? I’ve left my glasses at home and I’m just blind without them honestly”. It wasn’t often that she actually wore them but that was besides the point.

Charlie was thumbing a turquoise ink that would disappear after being read, which she found very interesting. She thought about how she could send her brothers secret messages to gear up for them going to Hogwarts in a year. How had that time already come.

Sighing she set the ink down she didn't want to make that purchase today, but she would eventually. She turned at the question from the student she thought she had seen before. Older but she recognized her. Wait, no glasses? What would possess someone who needed glasses to see wouldn't wear them?

Yet she couldn't let the girl wander around like she was lost. "What sort of parchment? Hogwarts parchment or different parchment?" That was an important question because type of parchment mattered.

Aurelie paused for a moment because the truth was it didn’t really matter to her what type of parchment she had. Parchment was simply parchment to her. All she needed was to be able to write on it for lessons and other various things that weren’t all that exciting. “I think just some regular parchment. Unless you’d recommend anything else?”. Luckily for her, money wasn’t exactly an obstacle, not that she really threw it around at all. The clothes she wore did tend to be made of the finest material but, you know, who wouldn’t do that if they could afford it? It was an easy decision.

“I love your hair by the way” smiling now as she eyed the girls curls with admiration. It was a look she’d tried on several occasions and it just simply, didn’t suit her. It made her look childlike. Not an option at all which was part of the reason why she’d cut her hair short last summer in the first place. That and the fact that she wanted to rebel against her parents. Little good that did her.

Recommend something else? Oh she absolutely could do that. Smiling she nodded, "I personally use the stuff over there--" she pointed about three aisles over. "Mostly for my notes for classes and papers. I don't want to waste my good stuff on papers. But for my letters to friends I use the stuff along the wall over there." She pointed to the stuff that was just a few feet in front of her and the other girl.

Her curls, putting a hand in her hair she smiled, "Thanks..." She smiled her hair was something she was really starting to love. Sometimes it was big and in your face other days not so much. She wondered what the other girl looked like with glasses since she wasn't wearing them. "How come you don't have your glasses? Not that you don't look great without them." Wow she sounded mean when she didn't mean to.

Part of Aurelie felt a little stupid. She had left her glasses at home, if somewhat on purpose, simply because she didn’t like wearing them. They didn’t quite sit right on her nose for whatever reason and made her eyes look as if she were some kind of bug. Not at all attractive. Not that she’d ever admit to that however. Happy to be helped, her eyes followed to the area where the curly haired girl had pointed, which she’d obviously walked past and somehow missed. “Oh. Yes. There” she replied simply before flashing an embarrassed smile. “I don’t really mind which I use. I do like to keep my notes organised and they absolutely have to look neat and proper so maybe I’ll just get a bunch of the good stuff, her eyes now on the higher quality parchment. How much would she really need was the key question? Enough for a whole school year and then some?

Giving compliments was something that she’d been working on a lot as of late and it was honestly bringing her so much joy. Sometimes, there were people who looked at her silly for her seemingly random compliments but she neither had time for those or actually cared. The world was a far better place with kind words and compliments in her opinion, case and point, the smile of the younger girl in from of her. “You’re welcome” she replied back, a happy smile of her own across her face until she mentioned the glasses. “Oh you know, I just forgot them. I’d forget my own head it wasn’t attached to my body” or rather, they were left sitting on the chest of drawers in her closet because they didn’t go with her outfit today.

“I most likely should go and see someone about it and try to get them fixed or something but father won’t let me” sighing slightly. That statement in itself was strange because he barely said a word to her these days. “Never mind though. What are you here for anyway? Getting anything uh…special? Can you get anything special here? laughing a little as she whispered at the end, her eyes now moving shiftily around the shop as she searched for a shop keeper of some kind. Leave it up to her to offend the owners. Then again, it wouldn’t be for the first time.

Charlie smiled as she watched the girl notice where she was talking about for the parchment. "The good stuff is my favorite. Colors, thicknesses..." there was the inner nerd Charlie was so often afraid of unleashing. It always seemed that people didn't understand her obsession with pens, inks, parchment. She really blamed it on her parents. If it hadn't been for her growing up along dig sites she probably wouldn't appreciate parchment as much as she does. "Can't say that I blame you there. I love it, I have a whole bunch of it."

Compliments were Charlie's favorite, but honestly she liked giving them just as much, well only if she means them. "oh." Or was it that the older girl didn't really like them. "I've never worn glasses, but you look like you'd pull them off." There you go Charlie the kindness she knew was true because her face just screamed I can pull off some retro cat eye glasses, oh or maybe some of those cute little round ones. Now she was just running off with all the ideas for the older girl.

Smiling she nodded at hearing her father wouldn't let her fix her eyes. She kind of understood, only her mother wouldn't let her do anything fun with her hair. Parents. Anything special here? Was she joking? "Yeah I'm going to get disappearing ink for my younger brothers. They think it's really cool that I can write them letters and it disappears after they've read it. Makes me being away feel less horrible." Although she supposed she was glad that they weren't at Hogwarts with her last term. But next term they would be at Hogwarts with her and she actually couldn't wait.

On the inside, Aurelie was laughing at the idea that the good stuff was referring to parchment because, it was parchment. But still, the fact that the girl had helped her look for the parchment when she couldn’t find it was enough for her not to poke fun. At least not right now anyway. “I mean what else can you ask for in a piece of parchment?” her tone friendly with only the slightest teasing. Then again, she went gaga for a lovely dress and a set of complimentary earrings so how could she judge? For her, it simply had to be neat and organised which was funny really because that was somewhat the opposite of what her parents were actually like. Sure, their house was neat and tidy thanks to the help but his work notes and writing was simply dreadful.

“Never? Honestly, they’re not too bad, I guess. Maybe I’ll dig them out later” or buy a new pair. That would be so much easier. The squared framed glasses that Walker had picked out for her simply didn’t suit her delicate features. It was her own fault for letting him decide though. Poor man, he really did have simply the worst style. If only he’d let her give him a makeover, he might actually find someone. “You’re lucky. I used to have to wear them all the time growing up. I looked like a right dork”.

Unsure if she should be amused or worried for her new friend, Aurelie simply laughed softly at the idea of something cool being on offer although… “That does sound pretty cool I guess. Anything invisible is always interesting and I’m sure your brothers will love it. Why would you feel horrible?” a look of slight confusion crossing her face now. It couldn’t simply be because she was away from them? “I don’t have a brother or sister or anything like that really but it can’t be that bad for them?. People who missed their family simply befuddled her. The best part of Hogwarts was getting away from them and all of their drama. Why could no one understand that?

Charlie felt the slight awkwardness at being into paper and ink. Sure she was fashionable and would often strive to be fashion forward. This was one of the few things she was kind of dorky about and she wouldn’t be ashamed by that, “eh, its one of the weird things that I like. Dorky but when you can usually only communicate by owl parchment matters.” She smiled thinking about all of the small little villages she had lived in during her life.

Honestly the glasses couldn’t be that good could they? “I’m sure you didn’t. But… kids are mean are mean when they’re young.” She said that as if she was 25 not 15. Big Sigh. Her smile hit her face at the mention of invisible ink being cool. Oh she forgot that she probably didn’t know this girl very well and she would have no idea how closer her family was… oops. “My family spends a lot of time off the grid. So I felt bad not being able to send letters to my brothers last term.” Twirling a curl around her finger, “I guess it’s not horrible but makes me miss the little heathens less.” She couldn’t imagine her life without her three younger siblings. They were seriously a part of her as much as her curly hair was.

It was dorky. There was no way around it but Aurelie didn’t really have the patience for people who didn’t own their own dorkyness. She herself didn’t always wear normal things or act properly as she had been brought up to be but she wasn’t about to pretend to be anyone else either. “There’s nothing wrong with it” she smiled earnestly. “It’s not my thing but you do you girl. I support it” he smile a little wider now.

Nodding and rolling her eyes, she replied “Yeah, I mean…yeah”. The truth was it was a little bit more than just name calling and the glasses weren’t the real issue. They were simply the symbol of a time that had been bad and now, using them was a painful memory. “It’s fine though. I’ll get over it. Everyone is a dork really”. As she listened to the girl talk about her family, it took Aurelie a moment to remember that not all families were like hers. She’d had this epiphany so many times and yet it still happened literally everyday to her. Like, how could she still be surprised that other families liked each other? And yet, here she was again. And what exactly did off the grid mean? “Oh. So you uhh…go camping a lot together or something? Like muggles?”. What did families do together? Trying to sympathised with her a little, she did her best impression of Walker, her family helper, and gave a small nod of understanding. “Whatever helps. I guess they’ll feel like some kind of secret spies or something with those letters too”.

With all of the things off her list in hand, she pulled out the crumpled piece of parchment from her pocket and mentally ticked the last thing off the list. “Well, I think I’m done in here. Thank you for your help er…I’m Aurelie” and doing her best despite the fact that her hands were rammed with various objects, she outstretched her hand with the crumpled up piece of paper on. Maybe her father did have a point. Maybe she should have gone to that all girls finishing school because right now, she was making an absolute fool of herself. Aurelie St Clare, the Hogwarts clown.

Going to Diagon Alley had been a task he was not at all looking forward to having to complete. But he wasn't much of a procrastinator, so even for something that he did not want to do... he had still reached his limit on how long he could go without. So here he was, his supply list tucked away into his jean pockets.

He'd decided to start with stocking his writing instruments first, deciding starting close to Knockturn Alley where he was extra anxious and working his way away might give him some semblance of relief while he went through the day. Goodness, the anxiety in the pit of his stomach told him everything he needed to know about how hard this upcoming term would be for him. But first and foremost, he was an older brother. So where the sisters went, he went.

Oh how he did envy Noah and his new freedom though. He had a good reason to not return -- he couldn't.

Browsing through the shelves, he opted to migrate towards the muggle materials. Notebooks were easier to keep organized than parchments anyways, and pens were what he was most comfortable with. Though he did grab some inkwells as well and was currently browsing the quills, trying to decide which he'd like the feel of best.

Okay. So Lisa wasn't totally following her older brother around Diagon Alley.

Okay. She totally was... She was trying to see two things. One if he'd notice her. And two why he was going into a writing implements store. She understood that Maya had a thing for organising, Noah a thing for dance, she had a love for chaos but she was yet to understand what Evan's thing was....... Was it pens and quills?

Lisa was a little perplexed by someone for having a love of writing implements so she followed her eldest brother into the store - tip-toeing behind him until she tapped his shoulder twice lightly. "AhemAhemAhem..... You dropped this."

For someone so jumpy, one really would think Evan would have been better at detecting someone following him. But nope, nothing, nada. He hardly even registered the sound of the bell behind him, indicating he was not the only one who entered. He just went about his business, grabbing the things he needed yet still standing here stalling at what type of quill he should get. Quills were fancy, and made him feel like he was signing some big important documents when he used them which was why it was something he was still interested in purchasing for the upcoming term.

Because who didn't sometimes want to feel fancy? Feel like they were in an important moment of history, signing some big important treaty? Instead of probably what was just really his muggle studies homework. Some times Evan Nam could have imagination too.

Picking up a tawny owl quill, he weighed it in his hand before his eyes kept also drifting towards one of the peacock ones. He had to admit it was rather pretty to look at... He was just reaching out for one when a tap on his shoulder sent the ink in his opposite hand flying on instinct towards the person who touched him, while he readied to run.

Until he saw who he'd just inked.

O__________o

"LISA. Uh... um.... oops."

Hogwarts RPG Name:
Ashley "Ash" C. Fox

Default Wednesday

Ash wrote a lot the previous term. She had filled several journals, that she had then put in a special locked box that was not going to be opened until she was grown up or she was dead. Maybe she'd have them published. Put a name on the cover. The lives of phoenixes. It would make a good book. She would get her art journals published too. I can't look away. Yes, those would be good books.

And those books had used up all of her ink. Hence why she was here. She needed to buy more ink. She was going to buy black and blue ink for important school stuff, of course. But she also wanted something different. She wanted different ink, special for her. A writer's signature. But she didn't know what color she wanted it to be. Maybe a royal blue shade. Ash stood off to the side of the shop, watching people come and go, looking for a color being bought or sold that would be the right color to mix.

Why did she want her own special color ink? Because she didn't like to be the same as anyone else. She couldn't explain why she had to be different in as many ways as possible, but perhaps it had to do with not being able to tell the difference between one pureblood supremacist and another. Or even one Hogwarts student with their back to her and another. She wanted to stand out. She didn't want there to be a question of who she was, what she was, or where her loyalties were and why. She wanted to be her own person, not a mindless follower. And special ink, different robes, unique tattoos, all of it made her feel different from everyone else. And that's what she wanted, really.

Ollie was nervous. She had never ventured into the wizarding world with her father before and, of course, he sent her in all alone on her first trip. Not to mention her father had kept the whole "You're a wizard" thing a secret from her until last year. All these other Hogwarts students roaming the streets made her uneasy, they were all so advanced compared to her!

Looking through her very detailed list of supplies, She stepped through the doors of the shop, the jingling bells catching her off guard causing her to look up. The shop was nice and comforting, unlike some of the others, she didn't feel as out of place.

She stepped off to the side and breathed in the sweet aroma of the store. "Okay, what do I need?" She murmured to herself looking through her list once again.

Ash noticed that a younger girl who looked kinda lost off to the same side of her. She felt bad for people who felt lost. Feeling lost = alone = bad, in her experience anyway. She made an almost-smile at the girl. "You can get quills and ink in here. You're gonna need a lot for the school year. Some of the inks and quills are more expensive than others." Being helpful was an important part of Ash's persona. Happy people were usually helpful. In order to appear happy and make herself at least feel like an actually GOOD person (if not a happy one), she must be helpful. She expected nothing from whoever she was talking to. Maybe they would punch her, or thank her, or recognize her immediately and start walking on eggshells so as to not make her fall apart. It hardly mattered. She didn't know the girl, and the girl didn't know her. But maybe... "What's your favorite color of ink?" For research purposes. She must find an ink that was beautiful, special, and unique. Find a shade that practically everyone liked, and make it slightly different in a cool way. Because she wanted to be likeable, but she could not be the same. The idea of appearing just like everyone else was painful, because everyone else often disappointed her in their uncaring. This ink thing was important and REAL and- and- she needed it.

Ollie looked up to the girl in front of her. She looked older - maybe a second or third year. "Oh, well..." She looked down at her list again. "My dad says I need to get AT LEAST one blue, black, and red." She looked back up to the girl in front of her.

She seemed nice enough. This was the first person to actually talk to Ollie. The only things she had heard on the way earlier were "watch out" or "excuse me".

"He didn't specify how much of each I should get but I figured one of each... Do you think I should do more?" Her cheeks got hot. It was very apparent she had no clue what she was doing here.

Ash shrugged. "It depends, I guess. If you like to write letters and journals, maybe you should get more. And if you are planning to use one color the most, you should get more of that color and less of the color you are planning to use the least." Of course! Deviations on standard colors were better. Sparkly black. Royal blue. Deep red. Rich purple. Yes. Those would be good. They would be unnoticeable unless you were looking, unclear who they belonged to unless you were observant, and most importantly, different. Perhaps talking to this girl was not a waste. She actually smiled a little this time, happy that she had found another way to be just a little different. Almost imperceptibly different, but that was the best kind. Ash extended her hand to the girl. It wouldn't hurt to show a greeting, since they weren't enemies yet. "I'm Ash. Short for Ashley." Although by this point Ash was almost her introductory name and Ashley a rare nickname. She never really expected 'Ash' to catch on, but after the whole arson thing, it really stuck and eventually she just thought of herself like that. Her life was funny like that, making her life match almost perfectly to her names. It was a shame that her middle name meant 'rough waters'. It had CLEARLY made her life like rough waters. She didn't intend to change it though.

She reached out and accepted the girls hand. "I'm Olive or Ollie if you prefer. I'm a first year." She felt at ease knowing the girl wasn't really judging her... or at least she didn't seem like it.

"What colors do you buy? I don't want to be missing supplies for my first class. My father would have my neck for sure." She didn't want to disappoint hom, ut it had been years since her father had attended the school, things had definitely changed!

"Cool. I'm a Third year Ravenclaw, whatever that means." Time was funny. Her time at Hogwarts was eternal. And it kept her soul in eternal torture. But her best times, when she was surfing, or painting, or playing the piano, or talking to her boyfriend in French- Those moments were short and fleeting. Few and far between. Just like happiness.

Even unhappy people can have happy moments. That was a song Ash had heard. It was true. But those happy moments were hard to find, and even harder to remember.

"I used to buy all the standard inks and stuff. Those are what I would suggest. I'm getting some different ones now, but that's just- ... -a personal thing. Y'know. The standard colors are fine." How was she supposed to explain to Ollie that standard ink colors made her go on a deep brain spiral that had a lot to do with a certain cult? How was she supposed to explain that "standard" anything kinda freaked her out? Answer: She wasn't supposed to. She took a deep, calming, slow breath. "Standard is fine." For normal people.

Ash laughed. Well, really what she was doing was "laughing". In quotation marks. Laughing just as part of her persona. Her persona was Ashley, as she used to be. She didn't think that girl existed now, but that was not anybody else's business. "I promise, if you're short on supplies on your first day, nothing bad will happen. I mean, bad things might happen, but they won't have anything to do with your lack of standard black ink." She might like, die or something... but she didn't have to worry about school supplies. Other people could cover it. "On your first day though, try not to duel anybody or defy any evil cults, especially not at 8 AM when you aren't even fully awake yet." That was a joke... actually, it really wasn't. Ash never had a good first day before. "I'm sure it'll be fine and you'll love it." Well, maybe Ollie would like it. Hopefully she would like it. Ash had never liked Hogwarts, but maybe Ollie would. Fingers crossed that not every kid would get traumatized.

Ollie was perplexed at her reply. duels? People actually fought each other? She thought that was a story her dad just told her so she wouldn't cause trouble... Not that she would.

She had always been a goodie two shoes. It was in her blood. "My father was a Ravenclaw. He was one of the... whats it called... perfects?" She furrowed her brow. Maybe this is the type of person she should make friends with. Based off that info alone, her father would already approve of Ash. "Do you mind helping me ordering my supplies? I know I shouldn't be worried about missing a few things, but I'd rather be prepared than not." She shrugged.

It wasn't that she cared really. She would get around to gstting more supplies later in the year if she was missing anything. But she was always battling for her father's approval and if he got word that she was unprepared for her classes... well she didn't really wanna think about that just yet.

If Ollie was goodie two shoes looking for parental approval and wanted to continue down that particular path, than perhaps talking to a certain "Ashley Calder Fox" was not a great idea. But Ash didn't know that Ollie wanted to not get in lots of trouble, so she didn't have to feel guilty about befriending her. "Sure I'll help. It's always good to be prepared." Although if she really wanted to be prepared for Hogwarts, she should practice getting hit by crucio. Just kidding. Or maybe that was the unfortunate truth. Nothing but pain could prepare you for Hogwarts, which was a sick thought that Ash personally thought was the clear truth. "Even if you can never truly be prepared, you can try and get close." You could be prepared. But if life before Hogwarts was like life at Hogwarts, then life in general was just ridiculously sad. It was better to be unprepared, because what would it mean to be prepared? It would mean having already suffered too much. Or at least it meant that to Ash. Maybe happy people had it different. Maybe preparation for them involved picking out uniforms and promising to write letters home.

"I'm gonna get some specially blended ink. It's gonna be special, it's gonna be my own, and it's going to annoy people who can't figure out why the ink I use looks just slightly different from everybody else's." Humor and anger were the best ways to hide tears. Why were there so many funny people and angry people in the world? Because there were too many people in pain. Duh.

Although if she really wanted to be prepared for Hogwarts, she should practice getting hit by crucio.

Ollie smiled at this. It was clear this girl was very headstrong. Maybe Ollie could take a few notes. She had always been very submissive in life. Sometimes she even felt like she wasn't her own person. One year at summer camp, during end of summer awards, she received the award for "Nicest". That's the award they give to people who have no personality - bland people. Maybe coming to Hogwarts was how she could become her own person.

"What's a custom blend?" Ollie inquired. Her father hadn't really given the best description of all the things she could buy for herself. And of course her mother was no help. For Ms.Elaine Burke was a muggle. But don't take that to mean she was boring, she was anything but. Ollie took after he mother a lot. But you'd never know. Ollie didn't know her mother all too well. Her parents had separated when she was young and her mother had moved back to the states.

She walked further up to the counter to look at all the wonders she could purchase.

Ash smiled. "It means that they mix it special just for me. So it's different from all the other inks." She didn't really explain WHY she wanted it to be slightly different, but she wasn't in the mood to explain why anyway. "I just like having something special, y'know? Like, I want my robes to be slightly irregular, and I want my ink to be different, and I want to have tattoos that I came up with myself." And her own surfboard and her own clothes and her own everything. Was it a little bit of an obsession? Maybe. Could she help it? Not really. She wasn't trying to be *different* for the sake of it. It was just that the opposite of difference was similarity, and Ash didn't like similarity. You know what was similar? The robes of cultists. The robes of Hogwarts kids. The days of her life. Her daily nightmares. Basically all of her least favorite things. She had noticed all the similarities in the mirror-time, and she had lots of time to think about it. Which led to her hating it. You could bet that she hated anything remotely to do with mirrors. Made sense.
