Default Potage's Cauldron Shop

As you enter Diagon Alley from the Leaky Cauldron, the first thing you might see is the assortment of cauldrons stacked out the front and decoratively dangling from the small balcony. The large window will let you peek in to find rows and rows of Cauldrons, organised precisely by style, and size. Along with the stacked cauldrons out the front is a welcoming sign that reads "Potage's Cauldron Shop - All Sizes - Brass, Cooper, Silver, Pewter, Self Stirring, and Collapsible."

Walking into the shop you will find rows and rows of cauldrons, anything you could need or want is there. Organized by size and style. The more expensive cauldrons will be found on the top shelves and the bigger cauldrons are always found in the back. Don't try to climb up the shelves to reach a silver cauldron though! The shopkeeper is there to help retrieve anything hard-to-reach. During summer months, as Diagon Alley prepares for all new and returning Hogwarts students, the shopkeeper makes it easy by having a school display right up front with the appropriate Hogwarts-approved cauldrons.

The shopkeeper also has a knack with cauldron repairs, should you have a crack, a hole, or any other damage. Still can't find what you are looking for? No problem, the shopkeeper is always ready to help out. Just head to the counter! If you don't see the anyone, just ding the small bell and it will ring to let them know someone is in need of assistance.

Lisa stood outside of the cauldron shop for a good twenty minutes.

They was a shop DEDICATED to CAULDRONS? Wow. She had only thought cauldrons were all pewter based on the films she had seen when she was younger. She had never seen a different type of cauldron before.

Realizing that she had the stares, she shook them off and headed inside. Curiosity was driving her motive. The shopping list said she’d need a pewter one buuuuut there were prettier cauldrons inside!

Being Muggleborn...and unable to use magic to do things like carrying heavy cauldrons...her cauldron had gotten dropped on its way to its summer home in her family's attic. Both summers. And, despite being supposedly sturdy, it now had a grand total of at least three dents. Her Mama was worried about its "structural integrity", whatever that meant, they had sent her to find out something about would the dents compromise its ability to withstand heat or evenly heating potions or withstanding heated potions or...something. They had used a lot of big words, and had written it down when she couldn't repeat the question after like four tries.

They were big words she hadn't heard before, okay. She wasn't an idiiot.

Mamie Margaret wandered into the store, clutching the note while she admired some of the cauldrons. She wasn't looking where she was going. She bumped into something. A cauldron? Or, a first year? "Oh...hi," she said, smiling distractedly at the shorter girl.

Lisa, once again, had somehow managed to stand in the middle of the aisle and blocked it. Merlin where was V to yank her out of the way like she had done the other day? Fortunately the girl that had bumped into her hadn’t done it at full force. It was more of a light tap or bump so she hadn’t rolled over like a cauldron running down the aisle or hill. She glanced up at the taller girl and gave her an unsure, small smile. “Hi ...?” she said. “Are you looking for a cauldron too?

And them she felt very dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb question. “I mean.... of course you are cause this is a cauldron shop.... What kind of cauldron are you looking for? I’m here to get my first one ever!” It was a BIG achievement in Lisa’s mind. Yes. Please be very impressed. Thank you.

Mamie Margaret was suddenly unsure about her assumption this kid was a first year. Was she that short when she was a first year? She looked waaaaaaay down at the child. Seriously, she was a good foot taller than her, at least. There was no way Mamie had been that short two years ago. Or possibly ever. Distracted by her doubts, she looked blankly at the kid for the first question. Cauldron?

Oh. Cauldron shop. Duh.

She smiled. "I'm actually getting my cauldron repaired," she told the girl. "It got dented." Several times...Hopefully Mamie wouldn't drop the Quaffle that much when she finally got to play Quidditch for the first time. "Your first cauldron ever? That's pretty exciting," she said, pointing to one of the standard school-size ones at the front of the store. "Are you getting that kind? That's the kind I have."

A cauldron repaired? Her eyebrows raised high. Lisa didn’t know that you could repair a cauldron ooooor dent one. “Dented? How do you dent a cauldron?’ she asked the older girl while she craned her head and neck up to look at her. Gosh. What did they feed people at Hogwarts and could she grow that tall too if she went? She’d note that argument to use later with her parents when they would suggest other schools.

She nodded several times and bounced from foot to foot. “It is!” She was glad that the older girl could see that it was exciting. It was super exciting and an important rite of passage. Not as cool as getting your wand but equally as important cause you needed a cauldron to do potions! She followed Mamie’s direction towards the pewter cauldrons. “Oh... Those are the ones on the list... I was hoping to get one of the prettier ones..

How did you dent a cauldron. How did you- Margaret gritted her teeth and took a deep breath. Hopefully this kid wasn't from one of those Neo-Alliance families. She seemed like she'd believe whatever an adult told her, so she had to be careful what she said. "Er...it's been dropped," she said simply, leaving out the helpful explanation that it was dropped because they'd tried to carry it up a ladder to the attic without magic. "A few times, actually."

Her face regained its more natural and trusting smile when the girl said she wanted a prettier cauldron. "Pretty isn't always better," she explained. "The pewter ones are really durable and easy to use." What? Was Mamie using logic? Shock. "You wouldn't learn to drive in the most expensive car, right? Because you'll probably mess up at first. Same logic for cauldrons."

Wait. Did wizards drive? Margaret realized probably not. This kid was going to know she was a Muggleborn. And, and that was JUST FINE, thank you, and she still thought this tiny girl was pretty adorable (and hopefully a future Hufflepuff) and she didn't want her to start condescending or something just because her parents couldn't do magic. BUT before she started panicking, maybe she should find out this kid's name. Maybe she wasn't related to anyone with those kind of prejudices. "My name's Margaret, what's yours?"

Lisa was curious about how a cauldron got dented. It looked heavy.... She thought it would dent other things. Her eyebrows raised. Dropped? Wait. Did Hogwarts make you carry your cauldron? “Wait so... do you have to carry it for class to class? I don’t think I can do that it looks heavy!!!” she pouted as her eyes widened almost to puppy dog level eyes. “No wonder it’s been dented. I think I may need to buy two just in case. Can we levitate them class to class?” This was something she had not thought of! It hadn’t been in the plan.

PRETTY WAS ALWAYS BETTER!! She, HERSELF, was an example. She was so CUTE AND ADORABLE that she could get away with ANYTHING!

Lisa wanted to SAY but she KNEW that she wasn’t completely right and the older girl’s logic was sound. Pretty isn’t always better that was true. It just looked better and more stylish. “Probably dents more easily too.” She listened to the analogy and found herself nodding when Margaret compared the shiny pretty cauldrons to a brand new car. “That makes sense! And that’s what my Dad told my brother this summer so he’s driving the older car. He’s going for his apparition and driver’s license.” And then once Noah got his driver’s license, he could drive them around to all places. She smirked. “My brother’s gonna chauffer the rest of us around!” Puppy dog eyes always worked on Noah.

Oh? Her name! She extended her hand towards the other girl when she introduced herself. She froze slightly at the name. Margaret seemed like a name for a much older person than this young girl. “Hi Margaret. I’m Lisa... Lisa Nam! Nice to meet you. I’m going to be a first year.

Well, yes, the cauldron dented itself AND the floor. Her parents were not very happy after the first dropping. But luckily they could hide the floor dent with a rug, and after the second floor dent, they'd cleared out the back corner of their storage shed to store it. So no maneuvering into the attic was required. "Noooo, you don't have to carry it at school," Mamie said with a sheepish smile, "this was when we were trying to store it. I don't recommend trying to store your cauldron in an attic, but I think you just need the one."

She nodded at the girl's conclusion that non-pewter dented more easily. Yes, dented, melted if you got your heat or the potion wrong, so many things could go wrong in potion brewing. Plus, first years were more likely to explode their cauldron, she guessed. But then, she wasn't very good at potions, so she was still liable to explode something if she wasn't careful.

Huh. The car analogy went over well. Kid had a brother who wanted to travel the Muggle and magical way, that was neat. They must not be a Neo-Alliance family then, Margaret realized with relief. It was very cute about her calling her brother a chauffer, though, she thought. Her brothers would be very upset if she called them her chauffer. Well, once they could drive. "That's very nice of him."

She shook the tiny girl's hand, thinking the gesture adorable and verry grown up for such a tiny eleven-year-old. "Lisa, nice to meet you," she said. Wait...Nam? Nam. She knew a Nam, didn't she? Mamie frowned, confused. "Are you related to Noah Nam??"

Oh phew! She was very glad to hear that she didn’t have to lug a cauldron from class to class. “Thank Merlin... I bet it would suck jelly slugs to have to carry it back and forth and up AAAAAAAALLLLL those staaaaaaaaairs.” Emphasis on ALL and staaaaaairs. An Attic? Oh wow. Her eyes widened as her over imaginative mind went to work and she could have sworn seeing a Margaret losing her grip on the cauldron and the cauldron breaking the floor. She jumped. “Did it go through the attic floor?

Lisa nodded in agreement when Mamie said her brother was nice. She bounced from foot to foot. She liked her siblings. “Yeppers Peppers.... He’s the best... He said he would drive me around AAAALL the time.” He had offered to drive her around. He never specified how much so Lisa was going to get him to be her personal driver. Hehehe.

Her small smile grew when Mamie asked if she were related to Noah Nam. Yep! That was her brother. “Yes! That’s my brother. He’s the best. Well he’s my eldest brother. Then we have two more siblings. Evan who’s two years older than me and then Maya,” she explained with a nod. She liked ALL of her siblings and she had to offset their quiet with HER LOUDNESS (or .... was it the other way around??) Her eyes widened at the thought that Mamie knew her brother. “Did you meet him at school last year!?!?” WAIT. WAS THIS GIRL MAMIE?!?!?!?

Do you have siblings?

She really wanted to stop talking about the dropping of her cauldron. It was embarrassing, okay? Did teeny tiny ten-year-olds not get embarrassed about things? Margaret shrugged and shook her head. No, did not go through the floor. It wouldn't be that many stairs from the Hufflepuff common room to the dungeons, either. She did smile a little at Lisa's analysis of her brother. He seemed pretty cool, especially if he offered to drive his little sister around.

But then, Lisa seemed pretty cool too. Who wouldn't want to drive her around?

And Lisa's brother was Noah!? Mamie grinned, she would have to write and tell Noah that she met his sister. And...there were more Nams? One was...she did some very difficult math and concluded Evan must be about her same age. Wait, she knew an Evan. Was that the same Evan????? Anyway, she did know Noah! "Yes, he is friends with my friend Aboli, and we...spent a lot of time together..." Did this child know about the ROOM? She didn't want to bring it up. She didn't want to remember it at all.

"I have two older brothers," Margaret said. "They're not as cool as Noah."

When Margaret mentioned being Aboli’s friend, she wondered if she could be friends with her brother’s girlfriend too. She had been trying not to ask more questions because she didn’t want to be too nosey but curiosity got the better of her. She flailed excitedly. “OH! Wait! Are you Mamie?” If this was Mamie, why was she going around but the name of Margaret.

That seemed a lot older and perhaps sophisticated but not as fun as Mamie!

Yeah.. Yeah she guessed. He was cool. Noah was pretty cool but she would never let Noah know that so openly in front of others. He was her favourite older brother and they did have a special bond but recently she was worried about her brother’s ego becoming waaaaay too big thus she wouldn’t mention a peep that Mamie thought he was cool. “He’s..... alright.” She offered Mamie a wink. “What are your bothers like? Are they wizards?

Were they...were they in the way? Margaret glanced around the cauldron shop, but it didn't seem so busy that people couldn't go around them. As long as they looked where they were going. "Errrr...yes, Mamie's a nickname," she said to Lisa, returning her attention to the tiny child.

She wouldn't think Noah needed help keeping his ego in check, if Lisa had asked, but little sisters did have a special view of their brothers' personalities, so she probably wouldn't have argued either. Like her own brothers...no, they didn't have an ego problem either. She wrinkled her nose with a smile at the kid's wink, though. How did this child have so much...energy?? Confidence?? Was this what came from not being shocked to find out one was a wizard at age eleven??

"They're fine," she said with a shrug. Her brothers weren't particularly interesting, she thought. "They're not wizards."

Lisa, being eleven, wasn’t very spatially aware of her surroundings and almost hit her elbow against a cauldron. Oof. Her eyes widened before she GLARED at the cauldron, clutching her elbow, before turning back to Marmie. Who knew cauldron’s could bite!!! “It’s nice. Do you prefer Margaret?” she asked, having a feeling this was the case. “Noah spoke of you... said you were nice.” And very studious. Little did she know that the conversation hadn’t occurred in the library (much to her imagination’s dismay) and that it had all occurred in a dusty old room somewhere in the bowels of Hogwarts.

She noted the older girl’s shrug in response to her question about her brothers. “Oh,” she said and then paused. If she had been a Muggle and had learned about all of this, she would have been thoroughly envious. She had a few cousins who had no magic in their being at all and neither she or her siblings had disclosed the truth about the magical world. “Are you close to them? Older or younger?

Mam...Margaret stifled a laugh as Lisa glared at the cauldron. Children. "Errr...yes. Yes, I go by Margaret now," she told the tiny almost-first year with an awkward smile. "Noah is very nice too...?" she said, not sure what else to say about Lisa saying Noah said she was nice. She would have argued about the studious bit, though.

"Yeah, we used to be closer, before I went away to school," she said with a nod. "They're both older. They like video games, but sometimes we all go camping together. And hiking. Or play football, that's fun too." Or it had been before the incident where she accidentally magically redirected a football into the goal...her brothers hadn't appreciated that much.

"Listen, Lisa, I hope to see you at school, right?" she said, shuffling awkwardly. They'd been standing here chatting for a while and this was the one day Mamie didn't have infinite time at Diagon Alley. "Come find me on the train, even, if you want." Yeah. See? Margaret was still friendly. She just had responsibilities now.
