Default Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions

Madam Malkin's the premiere location for quality robes. Although predominately known for providing Hogwarts students with uniforms, Malkin's also provides other robes to the Wizarding World for all functions -- formal and informal. Once in the doors you'll notice all of the racks around the shop, as well as heavy wooden furniture throughout for resting while looking for robes.

The space may look cluttered, but upon further inspection you'll notice that there is an order and flow making it easier to find the items you seek. In the back of the shop you will find dressing rooms to try on your latest find. Along the wall you will find Hogwarts apparel and accessories. Along the opposite wall are dress robes. In the middle sits a heavy wooden counter top, a glass bowl filled with candies sits beside a pad of paper where the shopkeeper will write up your total.

Can't find what you are looking for? Ask the shopkeeper and they'll be more than happy to help you find exactly what you're looking for. Still can't find what you’re looking for? Talk to the shopkeeper and they may be able to figure out how to do a customized order for you. Don't forget your socks.

"Thanks, guys, I'm not used to wearing dresses like this, but I thought I'd make a change, and it's really more comfortable than I had imagined," Violet began, smiling at them both. "Uh, well Ashley...there's certainly a lot of irregularity in the universe, that's for sure," she continued, looking over at Ashley with more than a little concern, "but I'm pretty sure you don't need clothes to be different, you're pretty much one of a kind."

"You're welcome, Violet. I enjoy wearing dresses and skirts when I'm in the mood to." She smiled a little bit. There was nothing at all wrong with wearing a dress just like there was nothing wrong with wearing jeans and boots.

Speaking of clothing, the younger girls attention was pulled back towards Ash when she spoke of one of the robes hems being a touch longer than all the others? She agreed with Violet though and quickly nodded her head. "Everyone's different in there own way, it's not what we wear that does that for us. It's our mind, hearts and soul that do that... and from what I recall, yours speak loud and clear Ash." Means that as a large compliment. "But if you really want your uniform to stand out from all the rest, I say to make it your own without really being over the top though... umm... subtle but fantastic." Nothing that would go getting her into trouble for breaking any school rules.

"It doesn't have to stand out though. I don't care about looking different. I just want it to be different." She didn't care if her robes looked exactly the same as everyone else's to an unobservant passerby. She just needed them to be different in some minor way. To prove to herself that she wasn't the same. Everybody else already thought so, apparently.

"I'm not gonna break any rules, I'm just gonna find something slightly irregular. It's not breaking any rules to get a robe that's quirky on accident." She frowned. "Or at least I don't think it says that anywhere..." But it didn't matter. Ash wasn't much of a stickler for rules. Detentions and point losses didn't even hurt her anymore. Was there torture involved? No? So she didn't have to follow along. "I think this one might have sleeves that are a teeny tiny bit different lengths." She picked that one up too. "And this one just feels different. I dunno why but it does." She picked her final robe. There was SOMETHING different about it, but she couldn't quite place it. She hugged the robes close to her. "I think I have everything I need." She looked a lot like a small child right then. Despite being 5 foot 6 and looking intimidating, despite obviously being a teen, there was something in her posture or appearance that looked like a small abandoned child hugging their stuffed animal for dear life. Perhaps that moment was telling. But it was fleeting, as Ash switched positions and draped the robes over her arm. "Yeah, dresses are comfortable and stuff. Especially in the summer." Look at how there she was. There in this conversation. She wasn't off in her own world at all. Just kidding, her mind was far away. Of course it was.

Somehow Violet felt taller then Ashley right now, even though she was several inches shorter--that happened to Violet quite a lot, actually, and she was always surprised when she passed a mirror or window and saw she was actually shorter than most everyone. She sympathized with Ash on one level, but at the same time was starting to feel a bit impatient--hadn't they all (well, most of them) gone through a horrible time this past year at Hogwarts? But it wouldn't do for everyone to fall apart because of it.

"Well, sure, your robes can be a little different if you like. You could even--you know, embroider something on them, your initials or symbols or something, in black thread so it wouldn't really show, but you'd know it was there." Violet paused a moment, looking back and forth from Dahlia to Ashley, wondering how to continue this conversation, and missing the old days when she didn't feel obligated to talk to people.

Finally she burst out, "Well, no matter how you look at it, it's no good pretending everything is just the same as usual and go on like nothing's happened. Not after this past year. They try to pretend it's just another summer before another school year, but it's not, and everyone who was at Hogwarts last year knows it." Violet felt herself getting a bit worked up and tamped those emotions down--she could see Uncle Helicanus out of the corner of her eye, looking up from his book at her in concern. She'd written an editorial letter to the Daily Prophet about the past school year and was still waiting to see if they'd have the nerve to publish it.

Turning back, he biffed the hat off his brother's head so he could get it on him easier. He could put it back on when when they were done, and then Lucky would get his camera from dad and they could save the memory forever.

"Arms up," he commanded, then pulled the sweater over the Ruari's head for him, continued to talk as he helped wrestle him into it. "How many of the knitted hats do you think we can get on you?" And also how ridiculous would he look if they got as many sweaters on him as possible, and then added a set of robes?

And know who the old lady's mean look was wasted on? This kid. Lucky (and Ruari) never had to deal with Mum Looks, or really even Dad Looks though they obviously had one of those, so they were both totally immune. Well. Lucky was immune. Well. Mostly. More than anything, he was very good at tuning out adults when it suited because, unless they were dad, they were usually trying to ruin something fun. And that was all he wanted, to have fun.

That was it. She was absolutely not going to deal with this. She set down the set of robes she had been getting read for an order that had been placed last week and turned toward the young boy. He didn't look familiar which means that he was maybe all of going into his first year or would be soon. She was ready to hang him upside down, well that wouldn't be a horrible idea. Flicking her wand he had the sweaters over his head in no time flat. "And exactly who do you think you are young man?" It made Victoria slightly queasy having to put on her no fun pants because it reminded her of her mother when she used to do things like this in places. Why did he have to make her be this way, one or two sweaters was kind of funny, mentions of hats on top of sweaters made it not so funny

Those trips still happened right? Everything felt off after this last year. "Okay," she smiled at each of the girls, "anyone need anything from me? Measurements, alterations, something special?" Her smile reached her eyes where she felt the skin near her eyes crinkle.

Honestly Lia was confused. She didn't quite understand what the big deal was with the robes having to be different in order to buy them. Robes were robes and if they fit it was fine. Once they were paid for and brought home then Ash could do whatever she wanted with them. At least that's how Lia saw it.

Perhaps whatever was upsetting Ash was going right over Lia's head. Maybe they had two completely different ways of thinking. Whatever the reason was, she didn't know but all of this was confusing. Shifting her gaze towards Violet, she nodded. That was what she sorta suggested earlier too. A little something to symbolize a change in the robes that only Ash would know about.

"That's great." She offered a little smile when Ash said she had found everything she needed. As quickly as the smile appeared it was gone to be replaced with a frown. Could they not talk about last term, please? Everyone knew it happened. Nothing was going to change it. She didn't need the reminders though.

When the shopkeeper joined them, Lia tried to push all other thoughts out of her head. She placed a kind smile on her face. "I don't, thank you." If Ash or Violet needed assistance she was sure they would answer for themselves.

They didn't get it. They didn't understand, did they? They didn't understand that sameness=compliance=not speaking up when the alliance came=terrible war. They didn't get it. They didn't. Get. It. And so what if she needed to be different? That wasn't their problem. Ash was half-convinced that the two of them were either judging her or pitying her. She took a deep breath to keep her 'emotional temperature' from going crazy.

Ash just looked at Violet with big, deep, void-like eyes. "Who's pretending?" Certainly not her. She just didn't mention her problems because nobody cared. Sure she was lying to herself and everybody else, but deep down she knew. She knew. She KNEW that nothing was fine. "Maybe adults are pretending." Seeing as the whole war thing was mostly their fault.

Ash smiled at the shopkeeper, but it wasn't real. "No thank you. I would just like to purchase these robes." Her robes. She hugged them to her chest again, with her chin resting on top. She didn't care if she looked like a little kid or not. These robes were different, and they were therefore special and Ash was sure that they would never sit around and accept pureblood supremacists. Never.

While that look hadn't been directed at her, Dahlia didn't miss it. She also didn't miss anything that was said or the way that Ash hugged her new robes to her chest as if nothing else in the world mattered but those robes. And maybe right then, to Ash that may have been the case even if Lia herself didn't understand it. Perhaps she wasn't even meant to understand. Everyone was different and therefore so was their thought process, their feelings and how they reacted to things.

Huh? Maybe the adults are pretending? What was that supposed to mean? Lia fidgeted a little uncomfortably tugging at the hem of her shirt. She felt like she should say something but at the same time she had no clue what to say. "Do either of you have anything fun played for the rest of the summer?" Yes, this was her way of trying to hopefully change the subject onto something a little lighter once again.

Okay, Ashley had definitely gone off the deep end, Violet thought to herself, looking into those hypnotized-looking eyes. All that had happened during the past year had obviously had a bad effect on her, but whatever was wrong seemed more than Violet felt capable of dealing with. Especially not now, Violet had her own problems--hadn't she spent half the year locked into that cramped little dungeon room, too, and fought in a battle, and now was worried about her Uncle Horatio, still in a coma in St. Mungo's from some undiagnosed spell? Violet hoped Ashley's family would do something to take care of her, it was more than another teenager could help with.

Yes, this was her way of trying to hopefully change the subject onto something a little lighter once again.
And turning to Dahlia, Violet thought, this one seems to be totally unaffected by the war, or is doing a great job of pretending. Well, Violet was all about working on her nonexistent small talk, so why not?

"No, nothing special, just enjoying being home." For a change. Violet had never appreciated her home fully enough, she was thinking this summer. And she'd even had some long talks with her grandfather, of all people. He'd always seemed so distant and cross before, but the war seemed to have opened him up, and he'd sat over tea with her asking questions about everything that happened during the past school year and, it seemed, actually listening to what Violet had to say. Uncle Helicanus was bookish and funny and often incomprehensible, as usual, but there seemed to be a lot of tension between her Uncle Hamlet and both her grandfather and Helicanus, though Violet had no idea what was causing it. But for once, not her fault, so she didn't dare to pry too much, for once.

"My Uncle Horatio has been in the hospital since the...fighting at Hogwarts; he's unconscious and they're not sure what spell he was hit with, so we're kind of worried about that." Violet pictured her amiable, plump uncle, pale and still in his bed in the Spell Damage Ward at St. Mungo's and was suddenly afraid she might start crying. None of that! she told herself, Violet P. Blackthorne did non cry!!

Afraid she still might, though, she turned back to the nice lady who ran the shop and went over her order for new, larger-in-the-chest-and-hips robes and the dresses she'd picked out.

Dahlia nodded, letting out a small breath in relief when Violet at least went along with what she had been trying to do. The war was ALWAYS on her mind. It was there and it was never going to go away no matter how hard she tried or pretended. She knew that, she really did but sometimes.. just sometimes she didn't want to be reminded of it every single moment. So she would try to do what she could to not think about it, even if most attempts failed.

"Being at home is nice." It was her favorite part of summer so far. Being home with all of her family. It was also hard. All of them had been affected by the war. Each of her siblings that still lived at her were Hogwarts students, each were in that dungeon room with her. Her papa had fought in the battle for them alongside her aunt, uncle, much older sister and brother-in-law. So while being home was great.. it was hard. Everyone dealt with their pain and fear differently.

Hearing Violet speak about her uncle being in Mungo's made her think of her brother-in-law Frankie being there after the war as well. He had gone home after about a week or so. That had been scary, so she could only imagine what Violet was feeling. "I-.. I hope he wakes up soon, Violet and they figure out what's wrong. Mungo's is the best. They'll help him." She wanted to offer the older girl a hug but she wasn't sure if that would help or make them both end up crying.

She finally needed new uniform. It felt like ages since she'd been taken into Malkin's, mostly because she hadn't seemed to be much of a grower in her second year, and her third year was as embarrassing. Granted, her mum still let her get a few new things, but it wasn't the same as actually needing them.

The skirts were too short now, too and the stockings were done for. Her shirts--bless--they were finally feeling a little tight. It was enough for a celebration and that was what uniform shopping was going to be.

Emmerson proudly led the way into her Madam Malkin's, making a beeline for the Hogwarts standard shirts first. They were what she was most eager to try on, the robes and everything else would come after. There was just...something about shopping. Handing over money, taking home a ton of new things, looking at those new things, wearing those new things, SHOWING OFF THOSE NEW THINGS.

Emmerson Cambridge was truly here for it.

As she walked, she picked up a few more things she would like to try on. Shopping was absolutely what she needed this summer, even if it WAS for school supplies.

Ash was ALWAYS HERE. Come on. It was ridiculous. She needed her first uniform, then she set her robes on fire, then she couldn’t wear her second year clothes anymore because it was traumatic, then she grew a bit and her clothes were too short and too tight. Bruhhh. Honestly, she kinda wanted to just get her clothes adjusted. She was sick of spending money on them all the time, and she had taken extra care picking them out last year. So... fingers crossed that she wouldn’t have to buy all new clothes. Of course, it would have been better if she didn’t have to come at all. Because of course Cambridge was here. Of course she was. Ash would really love to punch her in the face, but unfortunately she had restraint. She walked towards the counter, avoiding looking at Cambridge at all.

Unlike one Ashley Fox, Emmerson didn't notice the girl's presence in the shop at all. There was something to be said about the Emm's tunnel vision when you took her shopping and threw in a sprinkle of it leading to further maturity--perceived or otherwise.

Picking up a shirt, she moved to the counter with a question--an important one, one important enough that while she did finally see Fox, the Gryffindor had no time to dwell on this. Rather, Emm nudged Fox clear out of the way, trying to push herself in front to get the shopkeeper's attention. "Excuse me, are these the only set you have in this size?"

Whatever Ashley needed could wait. This was her summer, she was becoming a woman and it involved getting bigger clothing that testified to this fact.

"I'm sure they've got plenty in your size." She commented dissmisvely, sparing only the shortest glance at the Ravenclaw.

What was with Cambridge and pushing people? She was always doing it. Whether she was calling people mudbloods and trying to kill them or simply going shopping, she did NOT know when to keep her hands to herself. Ash nudged her in the other direction, back behind her. "I'm trying to get my clothes modified," she said coldly. "So I really do need to speak to the shopkeeper. And I'm in line first. You can't just shove me out of the way." Unless, of course, Cambridge wished to be pushed into a rack of clothing. Because Ash was not in the habit of putting up with nonsense or letting people step on her, especially if people meant Emmerson Cambridge.

Victoria glanced up from the running check list she'd been writing down to make sure she had enough of the necessary items for the start of summer, when all the kids would come in hounding her to get what they needed for a new term at Hogwarts.

Oh for the love of Texas. "Excuse me children, when ya'll are done fighting over who was here first.... maybe I could help you." She sighed because she did not like when little girls got a little attitude in the shop it brought the whole excitement of shopping down a notch. "Oh Ash, you're back? You two settle who was here first, Ashley let me go grab my notes from last summer darlin" She had the notes somewhere, she was sure of it. That poor girl was always needin new robes or a fix on her robes. Victoria was fairly certain this girl needed a friends and family discount.

Was...was Ashley Fox still talking?

She honestly wouldn't know, not with how well she was ignoring her. Calm as all get out, Emmerson simply side stepped the Ravenclaw to reclaim the spot at the front. There was no shoving or pushing or hitting--not now with the shopkeeper giving her the attention she was looking for. Emmerson simply moved to stand directly before the counter, by Fox, side by side. She didn't mind it, because she knew she could be and was far more demanding. Sharing the front was the same as only her being at the front in the end.

"I was here first ma'am, I walked in first." She knew, because when she'd walked in, she'd taken a cursory look about the shop and there wasn't a Fox in sight. "And I have more important needs if she's here all the time anyway."

Elbows on the counter, Emm nudged at Ashley, willing her to move further down the counter and away.

Ash didn’t shove Emmerson. Instead, she just rolled her eyes and wished with all of her heart that Cambridge would fall flat on her face, lose all of her friends especially Sammy and Kinsay, and/or make a fool of herself in some other way. Because that would make Ash really happy. Sorry.

“But you weren’t at the counter first. You pushed me out of the way.” She thought about it. “You know what Cambridge, you can go first.” She grinned. Maliciously. This way she could spend a lot of her time in the shop without Cambridge, but Cambridge would have to spend the WHOLE time right next to her. It wasn’t as fun as it would have been to punch Cambridge in the face, but it was better than nothing. It was definitely better than ruining her day.

Ash grinned and waved at the shopkeeper, slightly less maliciously. Hiii.

Rolling her eyes and huffing, "Now, now. Neither of you needs to start a brawl over some robes, now do we?" Her eyes narrowed at Emmerson and Ash. She would not have to clean up a tussle. She refused.

Glancing back at one Emmerson, "Well since dear ash is willing to let you go first, what's got your britches on fire that you need so bad?" She really sounded like she'd spent the last week with her family in the southern United States. Phew she needed to take a deep breath and just remember that these kids would grow out of this phase eventually.

Glancing back at Ash she smiled and nodded at the girl, seeing as she'd been a great customer so far in spite of her issues with not destroying her clothing...

She was... a mess of emotions, at best. Most of the people in her life, her friends, she just hadn't put as much effort into keeping her relationships strong with them and communication open after the emotional pit she'd fell into following the war and her father's passing. Life had been... a roller coaster since then. She'd had ongoing guilt for not telling her Dad about her pregnancy before he'd died, or how serious her relationship had been. And then when she should have been incandescently happy and planning a wedding.. instead she had spoken to the most understanding man in the universe and he'd agreed to stretch their engagement until she was ready.

Because while she knew without a doubt Jigger was the right person for her, she really would have preferred to have only tears of happiness on their day.

But now, a year and a half later, they'd agreed it was time. Once again, Jigger showed how amazing he was by agreeing to small, family only. So small that they were just going to go to a city hall, dressed nice and perhaps a hosted dinner at her Mom's after if she was willing. But still... small or not, she needed a decent dress. And she wanted Cressida to have something new as well, which was why she'd brought the toddler with her - currently perched on her hip. The little one was now taking slow tentative steps, but Naia found it went much faster if she just carried.

Stepping inside the store, she went towards the section with nicer looking dresses - skimming through them for something suitable, her daughter babbling at her throughout with the occasional 'mama' thrown in.

Her cousin really had no sense of style when it came to his daughter. In fact, Winnie was convinced that if it wasn’t for her cousin-in-law, Radhika would have been dressed in nothing but rompers and booties when she was now old enough to wear dresses and sweaters and shoes and bows. Which was why she and her god-daughter were wandering around the shop.

Well, there was also the fact that Winnie was nursing a slightly hurt heart with a shopping trip. If one looked close enough, they might see slightly puffy and red eyes under Winnie’s well-done makeup and hair. She planned on buying herself at least a new scarf and maybe a new dress because, well, maybe she felt the need to look pretty. ”Radi,” she asked the toddler holding onto her finger, while one of her own fingers was stuffed into her mouth. ”What color are we thinking? Pink? Blue?” The little girl made a face as if she was seriously thinking about the question and then shook her head. ”No!” Radhika said forcefully. Winnie laughed. ”I think that’s your new favorite word. Your fathers must just love it.” Radhika giggled like Winnie had said the funniest thing in the world and let go of Winnie’s fingers to wander off a little. Winnie let her. She was fine. She couldn't get fair and they were alone.

And then they weren’t. A bell tinkled in the room and another lady with a child close to Radhika’s age (Winnie thought at least) walked in. She gave her a big smile and a wave. ”Hello!” From somewhere by the cloaks Radhika’s voice echoed a very childish sounding ”Hello!” followed by a giggle as if she was playing a game.

Questions of color were floating through the current Amstern's head, as she debated if she wanted to find something traditional and white for herself, or a pale purple - one of her all time favorite colors. And if she went purple, what would be a good color for Cressida? Perhaps a pale green? Lavender and mint were always a cute combo in her opinion. "Mhmm, is that right baby?" She threw the occasional comment back as her daughter continued to babble, playing with a strand of her long brown hair as the little one did so. She'd been so wrapped up in her own thoughts, Naia hadn't even noticed the other people in the shop until she could hear two hello's.

Rotating her head to find them, she smiled back when she caught sight of the other woman, a small giggle escaping when she heard the chirp of a child too though she couldn't see where the little one was at. "Hi there." Seeing it was just the four of them, and the employees, Naia decided it should be safe to set Cress down so she could practice her steps and cruise next to her mum. "Playing hide and seek?" Every day seemed like a game of hide and seek.

Even if the parents and guardians were not aware of it.

Horatio Blackthorne stood just inside the doorway of Madam Malkins with a look of uncertainty on his plump, benign face. Tired of his family trailing after him all the time as if he were an invalid (which he had been until recently, but they needed to get over that), he'd set off on his own today, without thinking until now that he knew absolutely nothing about women's or girl's clothing. And he wasn't really quite sure which category his niece Violet fit into.

Seeing a lady with a girl over in the section of nicer clothing, he hesitantly approached her and asked, "Pardon me, Madam, for intruding, but I wonder if you could tell me--if one were buying a dress for a girl who had just turned seventeen, would one go to the girls' or women's section?"

Playing hide and seek? She blinked and was about to look around when she realized the lady was talking about Radhika. She laughed. "Sure seems like it, Radi, sweetie come here please." There was a pffffttt sound from somewhere and another giggle, but a moment later Radhika appeared near the mom and other little girl. She stood there for a moment, then waved before toddling off towards Winnie. "How old is yours?" Winnie asked, because that was what people did right?

She leaned down and scooped Radhika up as an older man began talking to the other lady. As she stood up, she gave the gentlemen a smile. "So missy, we still didn't decide on a dress for you....how about green? I think your daddy would like that." Radhika was leaning in a way that felt like she was going to flop out of her arms. She sighed. Were all children like this? All of her cousins had boys before Radhika and she hadn't really been expected to spend much time with them. Especially since they were all now in school.

Oh dear, now there were two of them. And a child. It was all a bit confusing, especially after spending so long in the solitude of St. Mungo's. But he was determined to do something nice for Violet, who had spend most of her summer nursing him and reading to him, and being remarkably gentle for an adolescent.

"Um...excuse me again...do either of you ladies know anything about seventeen year old girls?" Because Horatio certainly didn't felt like he did.

Victoria had heard the bell jingle a fair amount more than she was used to when it came to a non-summer day. It was a bit odd and brought her out of the back room in a hurry. Was that a Child's no she heard? She loved children they were so sweet and pure. She was just about to go swing by and tell them how cute the baby was when she heard a very confused voice. Oh.

Swooping over by the two women she smiled, "Lovely toddlers, need anything you give a holler." Giving a quick wave to the children and a smile to the women a gain she turned back toward the older gentleman. "Alright, sounds like you're trying to search for someone you don't normally buy for. Find anything in here and if you've got a picture I can custom make it for them. If you'd like more help let me know I'll be over there." She pointed behind her to the counter in the middle of the store.

The thing people often commented on about Naia was her enthusiasm for people, so anyone approaching her was always a fully welcomed event in her book. She wasn't even surprised at all when the other gentleman had approached her, asking for advice for what section to search for a 17 year old girl. There was .... a lot to consider for that question, like build for one. But she'd stick to simplicity for now. "Well, there should be a young ladies section. Usually in between girl's and women's that will have style's more like what a 17 year old wants, but also be a little bit larger than girl's clothes for a more comfortable fit." She certainly hoped that was at least a little helpful.

She had to bite back her own small giggle at the woman's blink, wondering momentarily if she thought Naia had been asking to play. Not that she wasn't secretly still a child at heart and liked games as well. Part of what she most looked forward to with getting to play with Cressida as she got older. Which speaking of, as the other little girl appeared near them, Cress gave a small startle before clinging more to her mother's leg which just caused the Amstern woman to laugh softly. "We're coming up on a year in November." How quickly time flew! "And yours?"

She could hear the gentleman ask another question about seventeen year olds and Naia's head turned towards him, as she considered the question. Kimberly was the youngest of her sisters and she was just now 18, so Nai was trying to remember what it was she liked. Not that she usually shared that information with her but... from what she could remember, it was all athletic wear and purple for the younger sister. Actually, think about it, comfortable had always been the trend for all of them. "Do you know her favorite color? If you don't know too much about her style, I would recommend a simple dress. But with pockets. All girls go crazy for pockets." Especially ones that could actually hold something. The novelty of that!

Thankfully after that attempt to be helpful, the shopkeeper appeared, which Naia was sure she would be far more useful than could provide information wise. She smiled at the woman, and at the compliment regarding toddlers, reached down to smooth Cress' hair again. She really did love motherhood and her little one. "Whenever you have a moment, might you be able to point me in the direction of something that might be good for a wedding ceremony? White isn't necessary, it's just a small affair."

Horatio gave one of his owlish blinks, which, added to his round glasses, only enhanced his resemblance to a large owl. He was only in his mid-forties, still young for a wizard, but he often read as somewhat older due to his old-fashioned manners. He looked from the woman who had finally spoken to him to the shopkeeper and back again. Of course, this lady wanted to talk to her friend and not be advising a stranger about girls' clothing. He shouldn't have intruded in the first place, but he so wanted to get this right. But it was all so confusing, much more complicated than gentlemen's clothing.

"Ah, um, yes, thank you, that's all very helpful, I'm sure. Thank you very much and I'm sorry for interrupting your visit." And with that, he gave an small, rather courtly bow to both women and retreated over to where the shopkeeper had directed him.

Arriving at the counter, Horatio tried to collect his thoughts. "Well, ah, no, I don't usually buy clothing for my niece. But she's just had a birthday--her seventeenth, all grown up, you know--and she was so kind to me when I was ill, I wanted to do something special for her. I used to know just what sorts of things she wore--well, they weren't really her choice, she was a child and they were ordered for her. But now she's practically grown up, or thinks she is, and I don't know quite what to get. Something rather nice, not just an everyday dress. Not too girlish--she'll get annoyed if I treat her like a child." Horatio thought a minute of just how mad Violet could get nowadays when really provoked--the way she was starting to resemble his father was a bit frightening, actually. "But...but not too adult, either--she's not completely grown up, I don't care what the law or she thinks, and I don't want her to look ridiculous. Just something...oh, seventeen is just so in between, I don't at all know the right sort of thing to get."
