Default Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions

Madam Malkin's the premiere location for quality robes. Although predominately known for providing Hogwarts students with uniforms, Malkin's also provides other robes to the Wizarding World for all functions -- formal and informal. Once in the doors you'll notice all of the racks around the shop, as well as heavy wooden furniture throughout for resting while looking for robes.

The space may look cluttered, but upon further inspection you'll notice that there is an order and flow making it easier to find the items you seek. In the back of the shop you will find dressing rooms to try on your latest find. Along the wall you will find Hogwarts apparel and accessories. Along the opposite wall are dress robes. In the middle sits a heavy wooden counter top, a glass bowl filled with candies sits beside a pad of paper where the shopkeeper will write up your total.

Can't find what you are looking for? Ask the shopkeeper and they'll be more than happy to help you find exactly what you're looking for. Still can't find what you’re looking for? Talk to the shopkeeper and they may be able to figure out how to do a customized order for you. Don't forget your socks.

After getting her measurements taken last time, Lisa needed to come back for another fitting as she had grown a little. She also wanted to get some new dress robes for a particular cousin’s upcoming wedding.... Heh. Not that the groom knew yet.... He’d find. Out.

With a bounce in her step, she skipped into Madam Malkin’s with a secretive smile ready to find the perfect outfit and fix her robes.

In the meantime- OOOOOOH WHAT A PRETTY FABRIC.

Victoria had still felt a bit odd in her shop as of late. That man who had snuck into her back room just didn't sit right with her. Instead she tried to make the absolute best clothing she could to try and forget about the fact that he hadn't been who he said he was.

It was summer after all. Her favorite time to be a shipowner in Diagon Alley.... well aside from Christmas. But all the new faces running around the alley really made her smile and she loved helping them. She tucked a few pieces here and there along racks before gliding to the large table in the center of the room where everyone paid and she took notes for custom orders.

Oh a new face. She didn't want to bombard the girl... she needed to take a deep breath and not scare her.

Default Violet Blackthorne and her uncle

"I don't know why you need more clothes, you've already got plenty," grumbled Helicanus Blackthorne as he trailed his niece into Madam Malkin's shop. He would have preferred to remain in Flourish and Blotts, browsing the latest books.

Violet scowled at him impatiently--how many times did she have to explain this? Men, and especially her uncles, were absolutely clueless and impossible. At least her grandfather seemed to understand. "First of all, in case you hadn't noticed, I have grown. Which she had, not only up, but also out--she now had definite curves in places where curves had not been before. "And also--I just need new clothes, can't you understand? I'm nearly sixteen, I'm tired of looking like a little schoolgirl."

"But you are a schoolgirl," Helicanus observed calmly.

Violet could not bear to argue about it with him a minute longer, and merely responded, "Well, I've outgrown my school robes and grandfather said I could get some new dresses as long as we were here, so I don't see why we have to keep on discussing it." Which should, and did, shut him up--none of the family dared to argue with their patriarch, Ignatius, very often.

Now Violet turned back to the shop to look around. She had been dressing sensibly, conservatively, comfortably for years and been happy with it, but she suddenly felt the desire to have some clothes that were--pretty. And she didn't really know how to begin. She wished, not for the first time, that her family included an aunt or two, along with all the uncles.

Victoria could tell when someone needed some swooping and some saving to get a few new pieces of clothing. Sliding over to the young girl and well she couldn't really tell if it was her father or uncle, either way Victoria could tell the girl needed a bit of space. "Hey darlin' what can I help you find?" She requested with a smile on her face as she glanced back at the other girl.

Violet gave one last 'don't you dare ruin this for me' look at her Uncle Helicanus, then turned to the woman who'd offered to help. "Well, I need to get re-measured for a new set of Hogwarts student robes. Because I've...uh, grown since the last time." Violet was pleased at her developing figure, but still just a bit self-conscious about it, too. "And I want...need some dresses." And not little-girl dresses, either, thank you very much.

Victoria hummed. She smiled then checked the girls height and width of her shoulders humming again. "Quick question." She tapped her pen to her lip, "You get your robes here from me?" She would hope so but there were a few places you could get Hogwarts robes... Not as great of quality but it still was a set of robes. But if the young girl had, she had likely left enough room to possibly lengthen them.

Lucky - that's Lachlan Phoenix Fuller-Thompson, but just Lucky to everyone always - had never worn robes before, unless you counted trying on his dad's Healery or fancy robes for fun, even though he'd known he was magic since forever. He'd never needed to; he'd always been around muggles and they were SUPER impractical anyway. Robes, not muggles. But sometimes muggles too, but mostly robes. 'No capes', you know? Not that they were capes, but they were basically dresses. Or dressing gowns. Which were impractical. Who even wore dressing gowns anymore? Old people, that's who.

But robes were on the list because they were part of the Hogwarts uniform, and that made them exciting. At least for today. Lucky's dad was letting him go inside and do this part on his own, because he was older and capable of doing things for himself. Lucky, not dad. But dad too. Actually, dad was arguably even older and even more capable. But also Lucky wasn't entirely on his own, he was pulling Ruari along by the sleeve because they came as a PACKAGE DEAL.

Had it occurred to him that that package deal was going to be separated for a whole year once 1st September 2104 got here? Maybe. Definitely. He wasn't stupid. But they weren't going to talk about that. It was forbidden. By Lucky. So shut up.

"Dare you to see how many sweaters you can put on at once," he said to his little bro, coming to a stop in front of the Hogwarts section, which he'd been staring at longingly from afar (and sometimes from aclose) for the last several THOUSAND years. Lucky picked up one of those daft pointed hats, and jammed it right on Ruari's head. Affectionately.

"Yes, of course," Violet replied, blushing slightly. Then she lowered her voice and leaned closer to the woman. "But, um, it's not just the length, it's...I've gotten...wider...in places." Violet gestured vaguely in the region of her chest and hips, but was too embarrassed to go on.

Victoria noticed a young boy coming in and saying something about sweaters she gave him a stern look and wondered if he was going to be a problem. But she had bigger things to finish yet.

Smiling at the young girl she turned and waved her towards the middle of the store. "No worries dear, I want to see my original measurements for you. See just how much we need to add." No need for embarrassments or anything like that she understood growing up and changing body. She had a large growth spurt right before her fifth year in school. It was very awkward.

Ashley "Ash" C. Fox
Fourth Year
Default Dahlia!

Quite unfortunately, Ash's previous robes were fireproof. Which meant that she could not burn them. But no way was she going to keep them. No way did she need those memories. Standing in the courtyard resignedly, sure that she was going to die for her defiance. Lying on the cold hard floor in the basement of Hogwarts, sure that she was going to die for her blood status. Lying on the floor in a bathroom, nerves on fire, sure that she was going to die for what she had done. Sitting alone in a void of nothing with nothing but said fireproof robes, knowing that she was going to die. Ashley Calder Fox was NOT going to die. She refused to. So she shredded those robes. She didn't want to see them again.

But Ash needed a uniform, so she was back in the robe shop for the third time in three years. Terrible circumstances caused it every year. First year, it was because she was going to Hogwarts. Second year, it was because she was technically an arsonist. And now, approaching her third year of Hogwarts, Ash needed to get rid of her memories.

She dragged her hand through the robe racks without much thought or effort, looking for something that fit her and looked fine. She would buy something, and then she would leave. That was the plan, anyway.

Dahlia didn't need new robes. In fact she didn't need anything from the shop. All of her clothing from the previous term still fit, a little too perfectly if anyone asked her. It was coming up on almost an entire year now since she had first started at Hogwarts and she was lucky if she had grown a quarter of an inch. This was pathetic really. It was, what it was though.

She entered the robe shop anyhow, figuring she could just look around. There was no harm in simply looking. And maybe if she came across something she did happen to like, well then she might just get it. There was no harm done in having an extra item or two, was there?

Walking a little further into the shop, she noticed a familiar face near one of the racks. "Ash? Hi," she spoke softly so as not to startle the slightly older Ravenclaw as she joined in looking at the some of the robes.

Malkins was usually the kind of shop Ruari would lose his head in. clothes were boring unless they were the kind you played in, and robes weren't the kind of clothes you played in. Dad had said so, he'd said; Robes somethingsomething something something, important something to remember, something, and Ruari hadn't forgotten it, he promised. he promised promised. Keeping close to Lucky, Ruari's let his fingers crawl all over each passing rack, feeling the fabrics- velvet, not-velvet, more not-velvet, pajama-y, crunchy, cold, not-velvet again, velvet!- because he was too old to hold his big brother's hand. He was nearly the same age as Lucky, very very nearly and next birthday he'd be even nearlyer, so he couldn't be seen holding hands and acting like a little baby, he had a reputation to uphold.

"You're on!" He excitedly said, the pointy pointy pointy hat hanging by a thread on his ears, it seemed eager to cover his eyes but Ruari willed it to shrink and it did until it fit just right. Sometimes his magic let him do cool things like that, other times it just made things go 'splodey- or there was that one time it had made his neck really really long and he'd felt like a big snake, it hadn't been fun. Dad had looked scared. Ruari grabbed the nearest sweater- a super neon yellow- and crammed it fast over his head, tugging it on haphazardly before reaching for the next- GREEEn apple- and pulling that one over his head too. Panting slightly, the 10-year-old (Felix, look! I fixed it) smiled super super big. "Pick one!" He couldn't have all the fun!

It was nice of Dahlia to not jump up behind her screaming bloody murder or something. That would not have ended well. The soft voice was much more soothing and much less scary. Even so, Ash stiffened until her brain did the recognizing thing where it realized who you were talking to and the cost-benefit analysis where you decided based on that info whether you were going to run or turn around. Who was it? Dahlia. She was alright. Was Ash going to turn around? Yes.

She turned around. "Hey Dahlia. What's up?" Ash looked at the girl. What was she here for? She hadn't grown(at least not in Ash's memory, although she could be wrong)... maybe she shredded her robes too. It was plausible. "Are there any differences between any of these uniforms? They're like, all the same size and color. Or at least I think they are." She could be wrong. Her eyes weren't really focusing much today, so in her mind, the robes all looked the same. Same. Same same same. Same same same, same same same. SAME. Same. You get the point. THEY WERE THE SAME. Her eyes flickered back to Dahlia. "They all look the same to me." Understatement.

Who was it?

Had it been a year or two earlier, before the war and all things prior to her first term at Hogwart, Lia may have greeted the slightly older Ravenclaw much more differently. As it was she knew better than to be going around scaring anyone right now. Why would she do that to someone if she wouldn't want it done to her? Especially to someone she didn't know extremely well? Perhaps if it were one of her siblings or cousins she may have placed her hands over their eyes of grabbed them from behind but that would've been before. Now she was much more careful about how she approached people. Many, like herself, were still very jumpy.

"Not all that much," she answered softly in reply when Ash turned around to face her. Basically wandering around trying to occupy her mind and self with something to do. Nope, the older girl wouldn't be wrong in her assessment of Dahlia's size. Unless anyone besides herself considered a quarter of an inch all that much to grow. It wasn't. It made no difference at all.

The still small but going into her second year Ravenclaw, turned her blue eyes back towards all the uniforms. "Ummm, I don't really think so?" She went ahead to check each of the tags on the uniforms. "These ones seem to be the same size. Maybe there other sizes were moved to a different rack? Or the shopkeeper can help you resize them if you that done?" There would be no resizing for her. Everything of hers still fit. Benefits of not growing much if you wanted to look at it that way? At least she was saving her parents some coins this term?

"Cool. How was your summer then? Mine was cool." A different subject of small talk. Surely the girl's summer had something interesting, even if it was 'therapy' or 'pretending to cope with trauma' or whatever other things people were doing these days. "I think these robes are all my size. That's the problem. How am I supposed to pick between them if they are all the same?" Her viewpoint was all wobbly. They were ALL the SAME. Ash didn't know why she was so bothered by this, but she just was. THEY WERE ALL THE SAME. That was the only thing that was wrong, but it was a big thing. "They're all the same." The same. Same same same same same. Same same, same same. Haha. The same. THE. SAME.

All the same.

People were all the same. Like the robes on the shelf. They covered up their differences until they were all the exact same.

Ash hated that. If she were a robe on this rack of clothes, she'd be a torn blue robe missing a sleeve with a phoenix stitched into the other sleeve. And with lots of secret pockets. And fireproof.

NOT the same.

Victoria had spun away from what she was doing and glanced back at the youngins. Excuse them. Who did they think they were she gave them the meanest mom-est look she could muster. Maybe that would deter the two young kids from trying on every single sweater they could get on. She did not need to cut them out of perfectly good sweaters. Sheesh. She kept a close eye on them.

Glancing at the two other girls in the shop she smiled, ah she remembered the one. She had required the fire proofed robes because she had set hers on fire the term before. But why was she in so soon? Her robes had fit just right, and the young girl did not look like she’d hit a huge growth spurt. Tori would know, she was great with sizing people up before the measuring tape did. She’d give the girls a few more seconds of browsing before she would meander over and ask them if they needed any help. Her eyes glanced around a second longer trying to find anyone in the store that might need some assistance.

How was her summer?

Why did everyone keep asking her that? Dahlia never really knew quite how to answer that question. Did they want the honest truth or for her to sugar coat it all and to say that she was doing much better? "It's going okay? Someday's are better than others." There. That sounded decent. There was noway she was going to mention the nightmares and how she sometimes slept in one of her siblings rooms at night. How she hide away in her room for weeks when she first got home. The constant jumpiness, fear of being alone, therapy sessions. Nope, Lia only wanted to speak about the good things today. "We went on a family camping trip and I went camping with my best-friend and his family too."

"What about you? What have you done this summer?" All the good things. Anything fun would be nice to know. Huh? Lia didn't exactly see what the real problem was with all the robes being the same size but she looked at each one again anyhow. "Umm.. well you can always choose one and when you get it home make it your own? Like sewing your initials somewhere on it or maybe something else that represents you?" Now that she had thought of the idea, she liked it. Maybe she would do the same thing with her own robes when she got home.

Lia had noticed the shopkeeper (Victoria) looking their way and gave a light smile in return.

"Cool," Ash said rather distractedly. "My summer was about the same in terms of good days and bad days, except for I went surfing, not camping." She was very distracted by the robes that were too similar. Symbolically similar. Horribly similar. She couldn't stand it. While she knew it was irrational to be upset about perfectly fine robes not being quirky, she couldn't help it. It was so unsettling. "I guess I'll just pick some then." Her bodyguards could do some embroidery later. Who knew that Dustin was so good at it? Ash wondered where he picked that up.

She said she would pick one, but she made no motion to do so. How was she supposed to pick the right ones to bring home? This was a very unimportant decision. It did not matter at all. Still... it really felt like this was the most important decision ever.

Ash smiled at the shopkeeper. More like a grimace, really. She didn't feel like smiling right now. Not when she was trying to make the most important decision of her life.

Violet was shifting from one foot to another, waiting for the shopkeeper to get back to her and glancing over at her Uncle Helicanus every once in a while to see if he was showing signs of impatience. Fortunately, he seemed to have his nose stuck in that new Arithmancy text he'd picked up at Flourish & Botts earlier (Violet had thought that it would be a good idea for them to stop there first and she was thinking now she'd been right).

Merlin, clothing stores made her feel awkward and out of place--she really wanted a few pretty dresses this term--she'd be 16 in several months, after all-- but she was also embarrassed for anyone to catch her buying them. As she looked around the shop, she spied some other Hogwarts students. Smoothing down her skirt and hoping they wouldn't think she looked stupid in this summer dress, she smiled in their direction. "Hi Ashley, hi Dahlia," she managed to get out without sounding too nervous.

Watching them for a response, she noticed how strained Ashley looked--not at all like the brash kid she'd been in first year. Actually, Violet suspected Ashley wasn't all right at all--well, neither was she, really, none of them were after the past year. But Violet had no idea what had happened to the kids who'd disappeared from class that day--maybe they'd gone through something even worse than the dark, dank room in the sub-dungeons.

Dahlia could see how distracted Ash was. Anyone paying even the slightly bit of attention to them both would be able to see it. It sort of made her feel, well, she wasn't really sure but she didn't like that there wasn't anything she could say that would help. How could she help anyone else when she could hardly help herself? Whatever Ash had gone through was a mystery to her and there was noway she was about to ask her about it. It wasn't her place to do so.

"My brother Elias likes to surf. I'm not that great at it.. I end up in the water more than I'm on the board." Which she never quite understand since she was really good at gymnastics and had balance. Shifting her weight from one foot to the other, Lia nodded her head. "I can help you choose some.. you can hold them up again yourself and see if you like them?" Maybe that would help a little bit?

Someone saying her name, had her turning to look around for the face that went with the voice. "Hi," Lia greeted the older girl Violet with a light smile. "I like your dress." It looked like it was comfortable. That's how she liked clothing to be. Comfortable. Her style varied widely by the day. She owned everything from over-sized hoodies (which were her brothers or Tad's) to perfectly fitted flower printed dresses, skater sneakers and boots to fancy shoes, overalls and athletic wear. If it was comfortable and cute, she liked it.

"Surfing is so relaxing. The water is all tumbling and rough and amazing." The feeling of balancing on a surfboard and riding a wave in was so great. And all the waves were DIFFERENT. That was important to her. "Hi Violet. I like your dress too." Actually, she had no idea what the girl was wearing- she wasn't paying attention - but Dahlia said it was a dress and a dress was infinitely better than a Hogwarts uniform. "I'm trying to find irregularities, Violet. I'm trying to find difference in a sea of similarity." Which, in the distracted and serious way Ash was saying it, sounded like a cry for help.

Aha! She found a robe that was slightly different. "This one has a hem that is accidentally a little longer. That means it's special and it's going to be mine." She picked it up of the rack, smiling for a few seconds. One down, two to go. Were there any robes with a slight tear? A incorrectly-sewn sleeve? If there was one, she was going to find it. And she was going to get it. Ash could not bear to be the same.

Oh boy, Ruari was about to get super wicked warm in these things. He was already panting; Lucky could have cackled. Instead he turned to the shelves of school things, and grabbed a grey Hogwarts sweater - with, hmm, blue trimming - big enough to get onto an already double-sweatered Ruari. Turning back, he biffed the hat off his brother's head so he could get it on him easier. He could put it back on when when they were done, and then Lucky would get his camera from dad and they could save the memory forever.

"Arms up," he commanded, then pulled the sweater over the Ruari's head for him, continued to talk as he helped wrestle him into it. "How many of the knitted hats do you think we can get on you?" And also how ridiculous would he look if they got as many sweaters on him as possible, and then added a set of robes?

And know who the old lady's mean look was wasted on? This kid. Lucky (and Ruari) never had to deal with Mum Looks, or really even Dad Looks though they obviously had one of those, so they were both totally immune. Well. Lucky was immune. Well. Mostly. More than anything, he was very good at tuning out adults when it suited because, unless they were dad, they were usually trying to ruin something fun. And that was all he wanted, to have fun.

Violet looked back down at her dress and flushed slightly with pleasure. They'd both liked her dress! And what was better, no one had said anything like, 'Violet!!! What are you doing in a dress???!!!?'

But then she was a little startled to hear Ashley's odd remark--not at all like Asnley, or what she'd seen of her so far. Violet hadn't known the other girl to be so philosophical, or poetic. "Thanks, guys, I'm not used to wearing dresses like this, but I thought I'd make a change, and it's really more comfortable than I had imagined," Violet began, smiling at them both. "Uh, well Ashley...there's certainly a lot of irregularity in the universe, that's for sure," she continued, looking over at Ashley with more than a little concern, "but I'm pretty sure you don't need clothes to be different, you're pretty much one of a kind."

Dahlia nodded. "I enjoy being in the water. Most water sports are fun." Not all of the are easy and some could be a little dangerous but she was an adventurous girl or at least she had been at one time. Normally she was willing to give most things a try at least once because how else would you know if you liked it, unless you tried it?

"You're welcome, Violet. I enjoy wearing dresses and skirts when I'm in the mood to." She smiled a little bit. There was nothing at all wrong with wearing a dress just like there was nothing wrong with wearing jeans and boots.

Speaking of clothing, the younger girls attention was pulled back towards Ash when she spoke of one of the robes hems being a touch longer than all the others? She agreed with Violet though and quickly nodded her head. "Everyone's different in there own way, it's not what we wear that does that for us. It's our mind, hearts and soul that do that... and from what I recall, yours speak loud and clear Ash." Means that as a large compliment. "But if you really want your uniform to stand out from all the rest, I say to make it your own without really being over the top though... umm... subtle but fantastic." Nothing that would go getting her into trouble for breaking any school rules.
