Default Flourish and Blotts

About halfway down the north side of the Alley stands Flourish and Blotts, the shop noticeable by its wide picture windows displaying all sorts of gold-embossed spellbooks, any new releases warranting advertisement and the occasional sleeping cat, as the shopkeeper’s two cats occasionally decide to make the window display their chosen napping place when they aren’t underfoot. Upon entry, all that seems to be visible are bookshelves, stacked to the ceiling and absolutely filled with books of all shapes and sizes. While it may look like chaos, there is a sort of order to the shelves and various stacks of books scattered throughout the main floor in addition to those shelved. A table sits close to the door which regularly holds sets of Hogwarts’ required textbooks every summer for the ease of students who may not want to hunt them down on their own, and a staircase, even more shelves filling the space underneath, leads up to a second floor that contains shelves of the various works of fiction from the Wizarding world and beyond.

Near the center of the shop stands the counter, where the shopkeeper can usually be found and which is also the location for the occasional book-signing or other book-related event. Surrounding the counter are displays of newspapers, magazines, diaries, journals and other small items that might interest the literary-minded customer. In addition, a large, leather-bound book rests on a small stand to the left of the counter: an index of all the books sold in the shop for the use of the customers who are in a hurry or simply don’t want to search through all the shelves on their own.

Toward the back of the shop, a door leading to a storage area and the small office used for paperwork and any other business the shopkeeper needs to take care of in private, a cat-door installed as well as the cats’ food and water while they’re in shop are there. Tucked away in various corners of the shop, half hidden by shelves and very cozy, are small reading nooks containing squashy chairs and small tables for a lamp, and a larger reading area including a fireplace can be found near one of the front windows. Enjoy!

Still, it had to be done, especially when she kept being reminded that the big bad OWL exams were done this term. That was...also not something she liked to think about.

So. She wouldn't. She would think about...books.

Consulting her list, and not noticing sets near the doorway, she went down a couple aisles without any luck. But then as she turned down the next aisle, she stumbled over something. She grabbed one of the shelves for support, sending a few more loose books toppling toward the floor - and one that thumped her in the head on its way down.

"OW!"
Had he even been down this aisle when he was here previously? Pabu had thought he was searching in the right part, but now he was realizing that all of the bookshelves looked the same to him. Filled to the brim with books he mostly had zero interest in reading. And he wasn't even planning on taking Divination next term, so why would he have been looking in this section earlier? Shoving the book in his hand back on the shelf, he nearly groaned in frustration before he was distracted by a shout of pain from behind him.

Turning his head, the rising 5th year blinked for a moment - recognizing the red head now on the ground. And... the book near her feet.

Oops. That was his fault, wasn't it?

"Shoot, Lydia. I'm so sorry!" He rushed over towards her, bending down at her side and picking up the offending book that had knocked her head, before some of the others. "Are you alright?"

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon needed one new textbook, and he was also looking for a few books to read for fun. That should have taken no more than ten minutes for him. He picked out his textbook, three healing books, 1 nonfiction book, and 2 fiction books. And another graphic novel. The first 4 were planned purchases, so it didn't take that long to find anything. He paid at the counter, ignoring any strange looks he may have received for buying eight books at a time. He would read all of them.

It was time to leave. But when he went out to go find Megan and Charlie, he found that Charlie was having another ridiculous tantrum and Megan didn't even notice Brandon's quiet presence there. Fine. He went back into the store and sat in a reading nook with the graphic novel. He'd probably stay there until Megan noticed he was gone and went looking for him. It might take a while, he told himself. Nobody ever noticed him.

Brandon was in a bad mood this summer, and the sitting-and-thinking-about-how-he-wasn't-important didn't help. But... here he was, doing it.

As per usual, the first order of today's business was... school supplies. While their house elf could do the shopping for him, their mum insisted that he should get out of the house and participate in purchasing his supplies for the upcoming term. Besides, he was a rising fifth year. THE year wherein they go through a trial by fire. But also, as usual, Mackenzie Mordaunt was not at all bothered. If anything, socializing and mingling was the real test.

Sighing as he stepped inside, he'd handed the list back to Calen their house-elf, and the creature wasted no time to do his task. He, however, went straight for the shelves that offered wizarding chess books. He was planning on buying a new one until he stumbled upon one that was published by a chess master that he could consider his contemporary. He'd taken the book out off the shelf and sat on an unoccupied chair, glancing over to a fellow bookworm who was already there.

"Hello, Brandon Fox," he said quietly, as he started to gloss over the pages of the book.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon looked up after a moment, almost surprised that anyone would know his name anymore. Or recognize him, especially since he was being so small and unassuming and out of the way. But Mackenzie wasn't his family, so... he relaxed a little, offering half of a smile. "Hello." He leaned to see what his friend(? kind of) was reading, unsurprised that he was reading about chess. He still remembered learning chess from him, and remembered that Mackenzie was better than even Brandon's father (who was unbeatable, or at least that's what he convinced Brandon as a kid). "What's that chess book? I haven't seen it before." Not that he was always reading chess books. But he hadn't seen it on the shelves before, and he paid attention to everything.

"I'm reading my graphic novel while I wait for my family. I got my textbooks, but..." He glanced outside, feeling a little sad under his mostly blank expression. "...they're doing something and I don't think they remembered to get me."

Mackenzie flipped back the cover and read it to Brandon, "Chess Endgame by Quentin Severus," he replied and went to continue glossing over the content, "Nothing much to offer about an actual chess endgame though." he murmured and looked over his younger companion, and then followed Brandon's gaze looking outside the window, then back to him.

To be honest, Mackenzie didn't see any problem there... perhaps it was because of the fact that he was rather unbothered by a lot of things, including parental affection. But then again, he was smothered with it by his mum, enough to last him a last time. "I see," wanting to divert the conversation away from Brandon's family issue, he'd looked at his graphic novel and the stack of Hogwarts books he'd purchased. "Have you picked out a favourite subject already?"

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon frowned. "Why is it called Chess Endgame when it doesn't tell you about chess endgame?" Was it some sort of metaphor? Or was it just bad? Brandon thought that life would be a lot easier if things could be taken at face value. He never took anything at face value, but he thought he should be able to.

Why would they call it 'chess endgame' if it didn't talk about chess endgame???

"My favorite school subject would be charms or DADA. But if you mean with my books, I really like books about healing." Which was why he had three. He had a bit of a healing obsession, and really wanted to become a healer one day. The graphic novels and the fiction were for fun (and to learn things about the world), the nonfiction book was about muggle medicine, and the textbook was required (but useful). "I'm going to be a healer. Although I also hope to improve at chess." He smiled a little. Chess was fun. However, he didn't really want to read a book on it unless he was told to.

Our gal Sherlock

With her school supply list in hand Bettie and her older brother made their way into Flourish and Blotts to buy her schoolbooks. As they wandered around the bookstore, they gathered up the schoolbooks The Stargazer's Guide to the Night Sky, The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1, The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection, One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi, A History of Magic, Handbook of Do-It-Yourself Broom Care, Quidditch Through the Ages, A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration, and Magical Drafts and Potions. Bettie also picks up a poetry book called Joining Ink and her brother grabs Dragon Species of Great Britain and Ireland and Quidditch Teams of Britain and Ireland. After wandering the bookstore and gathering all the books they needed and wanted they made their way to the center of the shop where the counter was to pay for all the books.

"I think it doesn't pertain to the actual, literal chess endgame... but how to get to the endgame through other means..." Mackenzie's tone drifted off as his brows furrowed reading some of the text. "Interesting..." he whispered, then continued to gloss over the pages-- not wanting to spoil the rest of the book's content.

Charms, and DADA. That's good. "Both are very practical subjects. It's worth mastering," he said putting down the chess book finally, wondering if he should go and get it. "Healer? Hmm-- then you should be able to like Potions as well...and I reckon Herbology." yes, he'd gone through the possible careers for him already during his fourth year, but being a Healer didn't really appeal to him. It was tedious, he thought. "Chess should be able to help," he exhaled and sat back in his very comfy chair, wondering about the next tournament that was going to happen in a few weeks. "I mean it's great to keep your analytical brain functioning, even if it's a simple board game."

Having exhausted her current personal library, Mitsuki headed into Flourish and Blotts to see if there was anything on the shelves that spoke to her. The Ravenclaw found herself not having much luck and those books that did speak to her were often too loud or had rather cumbersome bindings that were not appealing to the pads of her fingers. While she perused, she also contemplated applying for a position at this particular shop in the future. Perhaps not until she had completed her secondary education though. She thought it impractical to apply for a position when she could work no more than a few weeks each summer due to her summer term at Himitsumahou. Still, she had the application in hand and had paused before the historical section while she dedicated more of her attention to reading it over.

The day before William had been in Flourish & Blotts to buy all the fifth year books that he needed for the coming year together with his father. OWL year was looming on the horizon, and he needed some books just for fun reading or he'd probably drown in revision. Pushing thoughts of exams out of his head William headed towards the back of the book shop in search of some wiz-fiction books to read for lust and fun. Maybe he could try that book his penpal Frederic had been raving about in his last letter. What was it called again "Lost city of the ancients or something.." he mumbled to himself as he passed by a familiar dark haired girl from Hogwarts standing in front of the historical section, perusing something that looked very much like an application of some sort to him. "Hi Mitsuki!" William greeted with a big smile. "Are you signing up for that summer camp that has been adverted about in the DP?"

Her ability to hyper focus often meant that she did not pay attention to the telltale signs that someone was approaching. A shift in the air currents, dust and lint swirling in her peripheral vision...the signs were all there but due to her presence in literary sanctuary being a comforting environment had her guard down and senses clouded somewhat, which meant she nearly jumped out of her boots. Mercer would be quite jealous that someone else had startled her so effortlessly. Her hand had slipped instinctively into the pocket of her skirt to retrieve more than a pinch of salt when her heartrate evened out and her eyes returned to their natural dilation when she saw it was only a peer announcing their presence and making small talk. Interesting how often disappointment and relief could teeter along such a thin line.

"Hello," she greeted politely, the same level of familiarity not present in her features as was in his. She was observant to a degree, but her own social sphere was incredibly finite and only growing more so. "Summer Camp? DP?" More DP than summer camp, both were foreign upon her ears and she did not know how to answer his question without the clarifications. "I am not certain...but I do not think so."

Nothing about summer camp nor 'DP' on her form, that much she was certain of.

Yikes! Er, okay that didn't go as Will planned exactly. He hadn't wanted to startle Mitsuki clearly, but that had still happened. "Sorry," he mouthed out a sincere apology. "I thought you saw me coming." Will lived in the same dorm as Mercer, and Milo and they were Mitsuki's friends so his name must have come up sometimes right? Plus they sat at the same hall table, and attended many classes together. It was no use overthinking it he realized. He just had to do the polite thing, and tell her his name in case she had forgotten it. "I'm William, Will remember? I'm in Ravenclaw, and a fifth year like you." He offered up in a soft tone. He didn't want to cause a new startle.

"The DP is short for the Daily Prophet. It's the wizworlds go to newspaper. And the summer camp is an activity that the Games & Sports department at the ministry organizes for kids to try sports, and clubs during the summer. It's fun!" Will shared excitedly. He had met quite a few pen pals during the last ones.

"I did not. My eyes were averted to the application form in my hands," she clarified. She certainly was not seeing much of anything else outside of the various fields she would be required to fill out. Eventually. She still had not completely decided if she was going to apply or not. "I recall." His shift in tone was curious and it was almost as though he were afraid of something. Most likely nothing bearing any resemblance to the possibilities that occupied her thoughts, but he seemed not at ease and a bit timid. There was no rain today, however, so at least he need not concern himself with that haunting.

"Yes, I know the Daily Prophet. Grandfather writes a comprehensive column for it every month with news from the Ministry." She had simply not known it in the capacity of two letters. She had not been aware of these summer camps, however. Not that she would have had the time to participate at any of them regardless. "I spend the majority of the summer in semester at Himitsumahou."

Okay, that cleared up why she had practically jumped out of her skin when he had come over. She really hadn't seen or heard him. "It must be nice to be able to block everything out like that, and just focus soley on one thing." Will commented quietly. As a quidditch player you couldn't do that, not paying attention meant that you could get hit in the head or face by a raging bludger or collide with another player. None of that lead to a good outcom in a match.

At least she knew who he was now so she couldn't by frightened by him, which made him relax a little. Eyes going wide with surprise, and a little admiration too he asked his voice suddenly dry. "You're the Minister of Magic's granddaughter?" If William had connected the dots right. Mitsuki had a famous family. Mouth dropping open now William asked genuinly bewildered and shocked "You willingly go to school even in the summer when we are supposed to relax, and enjoy the break from homework and exams?" She clearly came from another family than his.

Bee tightened the scarf around her head as she stepped into the bookstore. Despite being vaguely aware that know one would suspect Bronwen Grimaldi of book-shopping, Celi had her convinced that she'd need to disguise herself the entire time they were in Diagon Alley. Unfortunately, however, she did not consider that wearing sunglasses indoors would likely have her sticking out more than it would keep her undercover.

And so, she carried on her way, eyes shaded by her sunnies as she began her unsuccessful search of the bookstore. There were way too many textbooks on display here. Where were the cheesy booktok romances? She was looking for trope-city.

Unfortunately, she looked so so so lost in her attempts. And this, dear readers, is why Bronwen Grimaldi never ventured into bookstores on her own.

It had taken an awful lot of persuasion and a rather begrudged looking expression to convince Elias to travel to Diagon Alley with just his brother that morning. Usually the family would be accompanied by their mother and with the younger siblings in tow but considering that Eli would now be attending schooling education for the first time rather than relying on homeschooling it had seemed like the appropriate time to let the two eldest Greenwoods loose on the world without supervision.

Eli had agreed to the shopping trip provided that the pair visit Flourish and Blotts first before he was dragged around looking at broom and Pygmy Puffs and whatever nonsensical things that his brother was into. The eleven year olds priorities lay with more studious hobbies like reading and Wizards Chess and.. Dragons. The latter was of course a little of a wayward stray from the others but he was still a young child and he couldn’t help but admit there was nothing cooler than a Hungarian Horntail.

Without even looking to see whether Ezra was close behind, Elias pushed the door open to the bookshop and headed straight over to the non-fiction section.

Yeahhh, Mr White! Yeah science!

It wasn't often that the two oldest Greenwood boys were allowed out alone. Ezra, slightly taller, than his brother, Elias, was excited. He had been so happy and full of exhilaration and hugs of thanks for his mum that morning before they left home.. but things had changed since he and Eli set foot on Diagon Alley.

Eli's dour expression was enough to quash even the excitement of a five year old on Christmas Eve. He was a few feet behind Eli on the cobbled street, taking everything in that was going on around him. The hustle and bustle, the gleeful kids running around and making friends while out buying their supplies. He watched a cloud of rainbow smoke appear from a kid's new wand, accompanied by a loud BANG! and he let out a laugh at their look of bewilderment.

He lost sight of Elias for a second and had a mini internal panic before noticing him heading into Flourish and Blotts. He ran after him and straight into the shop.

“Eli! I thought I'd lost you for a second. Mum and dad will kill me if I go home brotherless.”

Ezra was supposed to be the responsible one today. But he was only twelve and was finding the task increasingly difficult.

At this rate, Moritz should basically just get a job at Flourish and Blotts, because every time he ventured in here lately, he found himself helping someone out. He couldn't help it. He just felt so bad when he saw someone looking so completely lost. Once again, he'd come in here just to get the next book in his mystery series and spotted a girl who obviously had NO clue what she was doing here. Poor kid.

"Need help?" he asked with a smile. Also, why was she wearing sunglasses indoors? Had she been crying? That was usually why people wore sunglasses indoors, from his experience.

To be fair, Eli hadn’t intentionally tried to lose his tail in the form of his brother. It wasn’t his fault that Ezra was incapable of keeping up with his strides despite the fact that he was taller than him. Perhaps he should’ve been more observant? Wasn’t ‘constant vigilance’ supposed to be one of the first things that they were taught at school? Or at least that was what Grandpa Ewan had been drilling into them since they were 5 years old.

“I can find my own way home” he stated simply. There wasn’t actually much in the way of age between the two eldest Greenwoods so why Ezra had been awarded the responsibility of keeping an eye on Elias was beyond him. In fact it was more likely to be Ezra who became wayward with his fascination with Quidditch and creatures and who came home without the necessary supplies. “Have you brought the list?” The school supply list he meant. The one he had been handed just before the journey here and told that under no circumstances should they stray from.. or that’s what their father had said. Their Mum had snuck in an extra galleon or two for a treat at Florean’s should they wish.

He picked up a book from the shelf, wrinkled his nose at the boring cover and proceeded to put it back down on a table rather than putting it away again.

They had staff for that, did they not?

You see, young Elias, that was one of the reasons Ezra didn't fit in well at Durmstrang, where they appeared to live by that mantra. 'Constant vigilance', was an impossible mandate to adopt when you were distracted by everything going on around you. But hey, when you were twelve it was difficult not to be, despite your father treating you like you were an adult person. The world was filled with far too much wonder and colour and excitement and NOISE to be concerned with 'constant vigilance'.

Or maybe you could.. looking at Eli; who was like a grumpy seventy year old stuck in an eleven year old's body. All he needed was one of those muggle zimmer frames and Ezra was sure he could pass as one.

“Yes, I know you can.. But if I go home without you they wont be happy. And it'll be ME who gets the blame.” Oh he was struggling. What on earth were the Greenwood care givers thinking?

He dug in his pocket for the list.. Oh no. Where was it?? He looked at his brother wide eyed. “I can't find it!” Had he lost it in the floo network? Had he had it when he got here? He couldn't remember. He searched his back pockets and then scratched his head.

Nope.

Oh...

“Did you bring your school letter?” He looked hopefully at his brother, sweet smile for you.

What they were thinking was that Ezra might have a shred of control over the ‘unruly’ Elias. The truth was that it should be the other way around in that Eli’s maturity levels (as so helpfully described) were far beyond his years. Being a child was beneath him, he was ready to step up to the plate and become a Greenwood.

Whatever that meant.

“Well keep up then. We have to get books and then cauldrons and owls..” And MAYBE, just maybe there might be time for an ice cream. He might’ve seemed like a grumpy old man at times but he was still only eleven and there was something a little magical about Florean’s ice cream parlour.

What did he mean he’d lost it?!

The look that Eli have his brother was something else. He knew that he was far more trustworthy and reliable when it came to keeping his affairs in order and therefore it should’ve been him who was entrusted with the important part of this. Ezra could think that he was in charge all he liked but everyone knew who reeeeeally wore the trousers.

“No because YOU were supposed to bring the list” he stared at exasperated. “Now how am I supposed to know what textbooks I have to buy?” Eli didn’t not want to be THAT person who turned up to lessons with the wrong books and the wrong equipment and be made to look like a fool in front of his peers.

Ezra was already talented at that without any need for intervention.

That was the thing about maturity levels. There was a spectrum like with most things in life. Eli was impatient and judging and he could cause trouble with just with a look. Heck, opening his mouth and speaking could cause Armageddon or Rivers of Tears. Ezra was much more suited to diplomacy and politeness around his peers. And he respected people. ALL people. Perhaps that was why their mother had insisted on him looking out for Eli that day. To make sure he Elias didn't get into bother. Although Ezra was sceptical over how much influence he had over his brother. Actually, no, he knew exactly how much he had. ZERO.

Still, he could try..

“You forgot we need to go to the menagerie too. And to look at the brooms.” They had agreed to that earlier. Ezra wasn't much of a Quidditch player, but he did love to fly. The escapism of it. The wind in your face and the fresh cold air in your lungs. Oh it was exhilarating. It was the best time for thinking and to make up stories in your head about dragons and unicorns and Wizard War and Peace.

Tolstoy aside, we revert back to paragraph one. There was that look. That stony, 'I'm going to KILL you in your sleep' look.' Well.. yes, Eli did have a point. “I had it when we left, I'm sure!” Oh...

“I'll go and look outside. You. You wait here.”

It really was no surprise that Anna had found her way into the bookshop. Stories and stories about mermaids, kings and sunken treasure...magic worlds where the impossible becomes the everyday...why WOULDN'T she end up here? There was extra appeal to bookstores these days as well, ever since a certain bestie made a very special comparison to a princess who loved stories, was considered a little quirky because of it, but unfathomably kind. Anna tended to collect books and then not always read all of them - sometimes she just couldn't resist a really pretty cover, you know?

She wasn't really looking for anything in particular today and had decided to simply peruse the selves to see what may jump out at her. You know, tempt destiny to guide her to discovery!

Humming as she skipped around, the Hufflepuffle skipped right on by a pair of fighting boys and smiled softly at them as she whooshed right on by towards the History section.

Andrea wasn’t sure WHY she was even here. Except for school and quidditch stuff, she didn’t bother with books in general. They were kind of boring, weren’t they? … but aaaanyway. She had some time to waste so why not browse?

Ooooh, look who was here. “Anna!!” She called out, spotting the familiar curls as she turned into an isle. Of course, her older sister was here. She did love to read.. such a weirdo. But the most adorable one.

Eli wouldn’t have to give people the LOOK if they all just behaved normally. Or at least his idea of normal which was probably extremely warped in comparison to most individuals views of the world. It wasn’t that Elias was a pessimist as such although he certainly wasn’t an optimist either. When living in his own little bubble amongst his siblings and parents, Eli wasn’t immune to behaving his age. Visiting the Dragon sanctuary with Great Uncle Nathan had been a blast and the eleven year olds face had been full of wonder and awe as he saw his favourite creatures in the flesh for the first time. It had been a valuable bonding experience for the brothers as well as an opportunity to socialise with a Greenwood who wasn’t exactly ‘in’ with the rest of the family.

Uncle Nathan thought too highly of those the rest of the family (well a lot of the family) considered far below them.

Elias idea of a great story wasn’t as ‘fantastical’ as his brothers, ironic considering they were Wizards and therefore their entire world was set in a fantasy land. “Do we have to look at brooms? Our Mum and Dad didn’t give us anywhere near enough money to afford one of those.” It was more of an excuse not to considering their parents had a little warped perception of money and likely have them more money than necessary. As for the Menagerie, other than the aforementioned Dragons, creatures were really not his ‘thing’ but he SUPPOSED he could put up with it for a second.

His eyes rolled as Ezra ordered him to stay put. “I’m not going anywhere, there’s too many children out there.” Over-enthusiastic children with no sense of personal space boundaries and who were incapable of controlling their excitement.

Speaking of..

Suddenly a peppy curly haired girl skipped past humming annoyingly to herself. She got a glare in response for daring to even encroach on his bubble.
