Default Flourish and Blotts

About halfway down the north side of the Alley stands Flourish and Blotts, the shop noticeable by its wide picture windows displaying all sorts of gold-embossed spellbooks, any new releases warranting advertisement and the occasional sleeping cat, as the shopkeeper’s two cats occasionally decide to make the window display their chosen napping place when they aren’t underfoot. Upon entry, all that seems to be visible are bookshelves, stacked to the ceiling and absolutely filled with books of all shapes and sizes. While it may look like chaos, there is a sort of order to the shelves and various stacks of books scattered throughout the main floor in addition to those shelved. A table sits close to the door which regularly holds sets of Hogwarts’ required textbooks every summer for the ease of students who may not want to hunt them down on their own, and a staircase, even more shelves filling the space underneath, leads up to a second floor that contains shelves of the various works of fiction from the Wizarding world and beyond.

Near the center of the shop stands the counter, where the shopkeeper can usually be found and which is also the location for the occasional book-signing or other book-related event. Surrounding the counter are displays of newspapers, magazines, diaries, journals and other small items that might interest the literary-minded customer. In addition, a large, leather-bound book rests on a small stand to the left of the counter: an index of all the books sold in the shop for the use of the customers who are in a hurry or simply don’t want to search through all the shelves on their own.

Toward the back of the shop, a door leading to a storage area and the small office used for paperwork and any other business the shopkeeper needs to take care of in private, a cat-door installed as well as the cats’ food and water while they’re in shop are there. Tucked away in various corners of the shop, half hidden by shelves and very cozy, are small reading nooks containing squashy chairs and small tables for a lamp, and a larger reading area including a fireplace can be found near one of the front windows. Enjoy!

As chance would have it, who should be slingshotted back into Nina Castillo's orbit at that moment but an old friend, by name and by nature. How fortuitous that Nemesis, too, had cause to make a beeline for this particular section of Flourish and Blotts.

But it took only a moment for their objective to change, the same moment it took to recognise Castillo and remember the good old days they had almost forgotten. Five years it had been; funny, really, how much and yet how little could change in that time.

Waiting until Castillo had quit bustling about straightening the shelves and begun busying herself with something in her bag, Nem quietly stepped up on her other side, in the temporary blind spot. They plucked a book from the shelf, tipping over those lined up beside it with the slightest of nudges. "Oops."

No sooner had she found her list than the stack of NEATLY (thanks to NINA CASTILLO) (and NOT the Flourish and Blotts Staff) arranged books hit the shelf with a flat thud. And Nina, now very upSET, whipped her head around to berate the culprit. As one does. "Didn't you see I—"

.............................. No. Simply no. No. No. N O. Running into a former classmate in public is the seventh circle of hell. And seeing one of four particular former classmates in public? All seven circles of hell combined. Nemesis Upstead belonged to the latter category. In case anyone was unclear.

Five years was not enough.

And there was ~ n o t h i n g funny about it! For! The! Record!

And yet, Nina plastered the laaaargest smile on her face, for their benefit. Just because some people hadn't matured even an ounce in the past five years, did not mean that everyone experienced the same stunted growth :) "Nemesis!" Her voice oozed insincerity. She couldn't help it. "What a surprise!" Nina hated surprises.

Thrilled as they would have been to hear that they belonged to a super extra special category in Nina Castillo's obviously singular mind, such information was left unspoken. Perhaps Castillo wanted to protect their feelings, knowing how terribly irrational such thoughts were. She had always been so very sweet like that.

Nemesis met her smile - it was very convincing - with an easy one of their own, and mirrored her tone as easily as a looking glass might have mirrored her tragic... well... everything. "Nina! Wow, so good to see you again." They adjusted their tone then, to one of near utter sincerity, as easily as if they slipped on a comfortable old jacket. "Such a surprise. I had no idea you worked here."

Since when did Nem have feelings?

They'd have to try very, very hard to convince Nina Castillo, who had already made up her mind a long time ago. As far as she was concerned, Nemesis Upstead was a menace to society and though she looooooved to give second chances ... No ❤

So when they spoke, she frowned deeply. Few people could elicit such a scowl so very quickly -- though their next words elicited an even bigger reaction.

.....................

"I don't work here!" She sputtered, clearly offended. "I'm a healer." Junior healer, technically, but Nemesis did not need to know this. All they needed to know was that she was far too qualified to work in a bookshop! And in in grimy Diagon Alley, no less! AS IF! And yes, she realized they were looking for such a reaction, but she was thoroughly offended. Nemesis deserved to be told off.

Taking a deep breath in attempt to regain her composure, she plastered on another big smile! "Actually, I'm surprised I haven't seen you in St. Mungo's yet!" It wasn't surprising at all. They'd likely keep Nemesis in solitary confinement.
