Default Flourish and Blotts

About halfway down the north side of the Alley stands Flourish and Blotts, the shop noticeable by its wide picture windows displaying all sorts of gold-embossed spellbooks, any new releases warranting advertisement and the occasional sleeping cat, as the shopkeeper’s two cats occasionally decide to make the window display their chosen napping place when they aren’t underfoot. Upon entry, all that seems to be visible are bookshelves, stacked to the ceiling and absolutely filled with books of all shapes and sizes. While it may look like chaos, there is a sort of order to the shelves and various stacks of books scattered throughout the main floor in addition to those shelved. A table sits close to the door which regularly holds sets of Hogwarts’ required textbooks every summer for the ease of students who may not want to hunt them down on their own, and a staircase, even more shelves filling the space underneath, leads up to a second floor that contains shelves of the various works of fiction from the Wizarding world and beyond.

Near the center of the shop stands the counter, where the shopkeeper can usually be found and which is also the location for the occasional book-signing or other book-related event. Surrounding the counter are displays of newspapers, magazines, diaries, journals and other small items that might interest the literary-minded customer. In addition, a large, leather-bound book rests on a small stand to the left of the counter: an index of all the books sold in the shop for the use of the customers who are in a hurry or simply don’t want to search through all the shelves on their own.

Toward the back of the shop, a door leading to a storage area and the small office used for paperwork and any other business the shopkeeper needs to take care of in private, a cat-door installed as well as the cats’ food and water while they’re in shop are there. Tucked away in various corners of the shop, half hidden by shelves and very cozy, are small reading nooks containing squashy chairs and small tables for a lamp, and a larger reading area including a fireplace can be found near one of the front windows. Enjoy!

She really didn't want to be out and about. Honestly all she wanted to do was go back into hiding in Hope's room, but her dad told her she needed to get out and do something so here she was with her brother. Walking around the bookstore Gemma searched the novels and then moved on to the school books, she wasn't sure why she picked a bookstore when her dad owned one, but she just felt like going in knowing it would have the least amount of people. The summer just started and no one was thinking of school books already.

In her haze she found herself in the self help corner and staring at a book about grief, she picked it up and turned the pages. Getting emotional she quickly put it back before almost running away from the section, she didn't want to be near there, she didn't need the help.

She was fine, everything was fine.

Jackson stood in the comic book section browsing the comics on sale. He did it just to do something. His dad had persuaded him to go along to Diagon Alley with his sister. They both needed to go out and do normal teenage stuff and see their friends, his dad had argued. Staying cooped up in the house just thinking about their dead mother wasn’t healthy for either of them. Jackson didn’t really feel like seeing any friends or doing anything, but he was still here with Gemma inside the F & B bookstore. Picking up a comic book at random about quidditch, he turned around to go see where his sister was.

With the comic book tucked under his arm Jackson soon found his sister in the self help corner of the bookstore looking sad. "Gemma, are you all right?" he called out worriedly as he approached her. "Have you found any book you'd like to buy?"

Why did he seem so okay? She wondered if he was better at his feeling than her, but she wasn't going to show anything was wrong, no, she was fine, it was fine, everything was fine. "Yes, I'm great, just don't see anything really worth getting. Might see if they have any different photography books than dad has. Cooper might like something new." She hadn't really seen her friends since everything happened, but it was the first thing that had come to her mind.

"I think I'll go over there real quick. Did you find everything you wanted?" She headed towards that section but found the origami section first. "Oh, Hope might like these. Maybe I'll get her a couple that we can work on this summer." She had been spending most her time over there with her and Aunt Nessa anyway, so maybe she could at least bring things over.

"You can pick the next spot after this if you want."

Cooooooooome onnnnnn, Maya!! Let’s gooo quickly before Noah or Evan notice we’re gone. We can check out the books by the time they notice!” she cried, running as fast as she could down the street and into the shop. Heh. Noah was going to be in SO much trouble which would be SO MUCH FUN to watch him get out of it. Hehehe.

She quickly crouched behind a bookcase to catch her breath before leaning over to her sister and whispering.

Do you think they noticed?

"I'm coming!!" Maya called from behind Lisa. Huff, huff. She didn't have the same level of energy her younger sister had and running after her was not easy. And running inside of a bookshop? Well, that was practically a sin. She followed Lisa and hid behind the bookcase as well. "I don't think so... let me take a look," Maya said, peering from behind the bookcase and looking out the shop window. "I don't see them," she whispered before hiding back behind it.

"I think the coast is clear," she said, a little sparkle in her eye. "Oh hey!" She quickly pulled out a book from the shelf they were hiding behind and beamed. "I was looking for this," she told Lisa, "Armando Dippet, Monster or Mor-" Maya quickly caught herself before saying the next word. She cleared her throat and put it back in it's place. "Nevermind." She didn't need Lisa asking what a moron was or start calling people one.

On the inside he wasn't okay, far from it actually, but Jackson couldn't show that to his little sister now could he? Nope, he had to act brave and seem like he was dealing with feelings like a grown up. Jackson couldn't start crying in a book shop in front of Gemma and whoever else might wander in. No he had to show that things were fine, peachy even. Gemma couldn't know or maybe she'd think less of him for not dealing well with grieving. Dad knew he wasn't dealing well, Gemma didn't need to know.

The 'I'm great.' sounded hollow to Jackson's ears, but he decided to let it slide for his sisters sake for now. If she wasn't fine then she should know she could tell him. Raising a hand to scratch his head Jackson shrugged in response. "Can't you buy Cooper a new camera instead?" Because he honestly thought Cooper had enough of those photography books anyway. Showing Gemma the thick comic book he said "I got a cool new comic about quidditch adventures."

Tagging along after his sister Jackson wasn't surprised when she made a detour on the way to the origami section. "I bet Hope will like one of these a lot, but I've never understood why you too like folding papers into different forms so much?" It was a girl mystery.

"Dad has bought all our new books right? Then I want to go to the tattoo place or the quidditch shop next." Jackson commented as he stole a glance at a origami book with a folded snidget on the front.

Lisa had crouched down further against the bookcase as Maya looked around. She shot a glare at anyone who gave them a strange look. They were on an important mission and hiding from their SIBLINGS. Important business! Please move on KINDLY or NOT! Sheesh. When Maya whispered back to her that she couldn’t see them, Lisa let out a loud whoop for joy before realizing that she had been too loud. “Oops.. Sorry...” she whispered.

Her eyebrows raised at Maya as her sister found a book that she had been searching for. Lisa sidled up to Maya and went on her tippy toes trying to figure out what the title was. “Armando Dippet, Monster or Mor? Mor’s not a word. OOH is it a bad word?” she asked smirking, thinking it was sweet of Maya not to say it. Heh. Now she just wanted to know more. “Mort? Mormon? Mordant? More Ice Cream Please? More On?

Hogwarts RPG Name:
Ashley "Ash" C. Fox
Third Year
Default for natekka. sorry this took so long

It was sad that it ended like this. Ash used to be an avid reader. She used to buy tons of books at a time. Now she seldom read unless it was necessary. She used to be a bright personality, bouncing around and making people smile. Now she was gloomy, and rarely made the room a happier place. Such was life.

Well, she was determined to at least not make this store a sadder place right now. She picked up a couple books for school, toying with the idea of buying a book for fun. 'toying' as in, it's not gonna happen.

She turned and looked at the door. If she didn't buy school supplies, she wouldn't have to go to school. But she was DEFINITELY going to school. So she really did need to buy these books.

Actually, maybe she should buy an extra book. Poetry? Too deep. Genealogy? Boring, unless you wanted to see how many purebloods were married to distant relatives. Dragons? Traumatizing. Flesh-eating trees? Alright. She picked up the book. Now she didn't have to pick out anything else to read for fun. Good. Time to go home, apparently. 'Home.'

Little Noa Jourdan was seeking out her happy.

She wasn't sure where or what it was yet but she was determined to find it. After everything that had happened during her first year at Hogwarts, a lot of the excitement she felt towards life had been drained. Slowly (but surely) though, she was starting to find that excitement again in little things. Small moments that made her smile and forget, even if only for a moment, the horrors she had seen last year.

Today she had decided that it was time to get school books for next year. It didn't take her long to find them. Then she began browsing other books. Some of them seemed interesting and, if she was feeling like her 'normal' self, she would have been much more tempted by them. But she wasn't. She decided to take a look at them anyway. As she reached for one of them, though, she almost bumped into someone who had reached for a book on the same shelf. "Sorry," she mumbled, drawing her arm back, and looked up at them.

Oh.

Noa recognised this girl. It was Ashley Fox... One of the students who had been..... Noa didn't finished that thought. She really didn't want to think about it. Awkwardly, she tried to rearrange her expression from one of fear and pity to something... kinder. "That book looks interesting," she said quietly, offering the girl a little smile, her eyes friendly.

"It was Armando Dippet, Monster or Mortal." There. That made sense right? No need to keep asking! "Wanna look for some books on mind control?" she asked quickly, trying to change the subject.

Lisa gleefully hit her hand against her sister’s as they high fived. “Oh yes they are. I don’t feel bad at all. The two of them deserve it especially Noah. Then again maybe we’ll get a smile out of him?” she asked, quirking her eyebrow at her older sister. She couldn’t WAIT to hear their parents tell them off. It’d be so much fun to watch it.

She totally felt like Maya was hiding something cause Maya was acting really really strange by putting the book way out of her reach. Lisa pouted when she heard Maya’s reply. Hmph. Hang on. “Wait. How can he be either a monster of a mortal? Not all monster’s are immortal. Only vampires are..... So that doesn’t make sense.” And then Maya turned bright red after the words she had posed so Lisa figured that it had to be one of them. She wasn’t exactly sure which word was the right one. “Mormont? More On?” she repeated but quickly lost focus as her sister changed the subject to mind control.

OOH. She liked this topic. “Do you think Noah will fall for it?” Would their ultimate plan to reunite people work or would it be all futile? “There has to be a spell for that.

"Nah, no need to be sorry." Ash was in a "chill" mood today. If Emmerson Cambridge bumped her, it would be different. Actually, the idea of Emmerson Cambridge apologizing to Ash for even the smallest thing was laughable. So if that had happened, Ash would have laughed. Instead, there was a girl who she wasn't close to, didn't know well, and was not her enemy yet. So instead of punching her(enemies) or apologizing too(friend), she just stepped back (so the girl could get her book or whatever) politely, smilingly, and in a hard-to-read sort of way. "Whoops."

That's when she caught the look. Surprise, then recognition. Fear and pity, into "friendliness" and pity. Yeah, Ash didn't find that surprising. And in her current mood, she wasn't inclined to care, as long as the emotions remained unsaid.

Oooh, small talk. Angry Ash would be insulted, happy Ash would be friendly, and chill Ash... well, chill Ash did not hate small talk. Even small talk that came from a place of pity instead of curiosity. Chill Ash was happy to talk, provided the correct questions were asked. Unlikely to share unprompted information, but freely answering any questions. A very "meh" kind of mood. But asking about books was easier than asking about family, wellbeing, or "recovery". Much better type of small talk. "Yeah, it's like poetry I think. Or musings. Something like that." Ash liked poetry. It was art. Just like painting, or singing, or playing sports. Sad poems were her particular favorite. Not that she was going to mention that. "I like poetry. What are you looking for?" Was she also looking for poetry? That would be a funny coincidence. Well, depending on the person. Some people doing the same things as you were stalkers. Probably not this girl though. Still, better to make sure. "I don't believe we've met. I'm Ash." Ashley Calder Fox. Ash tree, rough waters, Fox. Even her official for-people-she-didn't-like name suited her. Ash trees were strong and resilient. Rough waters were tumultuous and dragged you around in them. Foxes were smart and cool. Her father wasn't a great father, but he sure came up with some very applicable names (with applicable possible nicknames) for his firstborn. Ash extended her hand to the girl. Ash didn't feel like asking, but the greeting she gave was probably enough to elicit a response. If not, she would actually have to ask. Which was unlikely but occasional. Ash found it mildly interesting to see if she was right. Only mildly.

Ash today was pretending she thought about anything mildly. Nah, Ash varied between extremes. There was no such thing as a chill Ash. There was the "I have an emotional void" Ash, and that was closer to her current mood than "chill". But that was a rare Ash. It was, in fact, quite probable that the newcomer was experiencing Bored Ash. That was a common one these days. Y'know.

"Why would I buy him a new camera? I'm not dating him or anything. Wouldn't that be weird to buy someone such an expensive gift that you are just a friend with? Especially if it isn't their birthday or a holiday?" She was confused by that, but maybe she was wrong. She hadn't really bought tons of gifts for friends, maybe that was something you bought. Now she was in thought about this as she walked around the origami.

"Comic books? Are you 5?" She never understood boy and their comic book obsession and didn't know why teenage boys still liked them. They looked like they were for little kids. She just shook her head as she picked up a few new books. "I think these ones will work." She thought they would be good ones, at least she hoped they would be. "It's fun and calming. Something we can do together but on our own." Hope was so much better at it than her, but she always had enjoyed watching her.

"The tattoo place? What are you getting there?"

Jackson inwardly sighed at himself. Good work, now his sister thought that he thought that she was dating Cooper. How did he get himself out of this hole? "I know you aren’t dating Cooper okay? I just suggested a camera since I bet Cooper has more than one photo book already, and a camera would be different. You're right though, it’s not his birthday or anything so pick some cool glowing pencils or something instead. It’s up to you Gemma, you know Cooper best." Jackson was just trying to be helpful, but if she didn’t want his suggestions then he could go look at quidditch books just saying.

Getting a little defensive and hurt by Gemma’s comment Jackson muttered back "Dad reads comics too you know? You are never too old to read a really good comic book dad says." Turning his back on his sister Jackson turned the comic book around so he could read what it was about. Focusing on that he didn’t respond to Gemma’s explanation about origami. He instead turned back to answer his sister about the tattoo place. "I was thinking about getting a tattoo with mum’s name on it, but now I'm more interested in candy. Shall we go to Sugarplums and buy some chocolate frogs and jelly slugs?"

Noa smiled, a little nervous but also grateful that the girl wasn’t mad about her almost knocking into her.

Whoops indeed.

Noa listened intently as Ashley explained what the book was. She hadn’t personally read a lot of poetry in her life. Growing up, she’d had the occasional class that required you to read a poetry book, but she didn’t really remember any of them. “What’s the difference between poetry and musings?” Noa asked curiously because she honestly didn’t know. She knew what the verb ‘to muse’ meant, but she didn’t know how that could relate to poetry in any way. Musings made her think of diaries more than anything. The twelve-year-old smiled and nodded when Ashley said she liked poetry. It was cool but maybe not her thing. “I’m not sure really,” she answered honestly. “Something interesting.” It was a vague answer but it was true. She wouldn’t know what she was looking for until she saw it and she hadn’t seen it yet.

“No. We haven’t,” she confirmed. Noa hadn’t much been one for socialising last term, so there were many students she hadn’t met. Well, of course, it was probably impossible - or at least improbable - for anyone to meet every single other student. There were just too many students for that. She snapped out of that thought, though, and smiled at Ash. “It’s nice to meet you, Ash. I’m Noa,” she said and shook Ash’s outstretched hand politely. She felt a little more relaxed now but she was still trying not to think about last term. It was hard to do, though. Especially with this particular person.

This was actually not a book of poetry. It was a book about flesh-eating trees, and her mind had just blanked. But, she was not presently going to admit that to someone who already thought she was crazy. So, Ash picked an actual poetry book of the shelf too. "Oooh I think I'll also get this one on flesh-eating trees." Now the girl would not be able to notice unless she was paying super close attention. Problem solved. Ash could relax. "Musings are like deep thoughts or whatever, and poetry is like deep thoughts, but with rhyming and intentional literary devices. At least that's what my muggle school told me." Hogwarts had not told her anything on the subject, actually. Too bad. Missed opportunity. "Maybe you should pick a novel. Or like, a CoMC textbook. I dunno." Different types of books, but both were pretty popular. So reasonable guess. "Nice to meet you Noa." Introductions are kinda pointless these days, Ash thought. People should just tell me their name and get on with it, since we both already know what my name is. Still, pretending she didn't know why they knew who she was was fun. She could just pretend to be a regular person. It was better that way.

Maya felt her heart make a slight dip when Lisa mentioned Noah deserving it. She kept her smile on her face and nudged her sister lightly. "More like Evan deserves it," she giggled, "We should say Ev told us to run away while he distracted Noah." Because then Evan would definitely get in more trouble.

Maya paused for a moment trying to find a way to get out of this one. She could feel the pressure to answer this correctly and her palms started to get a tad bit damp. As she ran her fingers along the spines of the books, she thought carefully. "Well, yes, not all monsters are immortal. Maybe there's a monster we don't know about and they are immortal? We could find a book on it..." she said, hoping it would deter her younger sister from wanting to poke into more.

A little breath of relief came from Maya when Lisa dropped the subject. "Of course, why wouldn't he fall for it?" Maya was fairly sure that Noah would go along with it just to amuse Lisa. "Maybe you can also learn how to mind control the other students and you can be empress of Hogwarts."

And they could find her a crown to complete the whole look. Maya could see Lisa now - running around Hogwarts with a wand, a giant crown and a fluffy cape.

She knew her mother would have been so nosy and had her cats following her throughout the term if she liked someone and all these were making tears go down her cheeks without her realizing it at first. She wasn't even going to remark about the glowing pencils, were they little kids at one of their dad's book fairs?

She wiped her eyes really quickly and hoped he didn't see before turning and grabbing a few books. "Yeah, yeah, boys and comics." She didn't get it, though she liked a few of them. She rather read wizarding mystery novels or even some nonfiction travel books. Those were more interesting and took longer.

A tattoo was interesting, but Gemma wasn't sure she could think about it. "Are you old enough?" Honestly she wasn't even sure how old you had to be for those, she never thought about them. Candy sounded okay, but would she see people there that would look at them with pity? She nodded an okay about going, "Chocolate Frogs sound good."

It was like he turned his back for TWO SECONDS and his sister's managed to slip away to who knows where. Two. Seconds. And now it was like playing Hide and seek in a place FAR too large for his current level of comfort. He had his wand in his back pocket, the first time he'd kept it on his person in a very long time even though he technically couldn't DO anything with it. Figured it was just time to start getting back into the habit, no matter how much he didn't want to.

He scoured Eyelops Owl Emporium thoroughly first, wondering if maybe they had decided to go take a look at the birds, before making his way next to Flourish and Blotts. That probably should have been his first place to check given the fact they all were who they were, but honestly he did also doubt his ability to concentrate in a book store.

Which was a safe bet. Because as soon as he stepped inside, his worry and fear from the last few months decided to give him reprieve and wait outside. He even almost gave an actual SMILE seeing the rows and rows of books, just begging to be taken home and read. Maybe they had a really good astronomy section? He could even get Lisa a new book on black holes, and maybe something about bandaging or organization spells for Maya.

He started browsing shelves before noticing his sisters and skirting around them to look closer at the shelves. "Hi Lisa, Hi Maya."

Entirely forgetting he came in here for the sole purpose of FINDING them.

Had he upset her? Jackson mentally kicked himself when his sister suddenly got very quiet. Did he stick his foot in it when he mentioned Cooper and dating in the same sentence? Well he thought that Moira could possibly in the future be his girlfriend. He liked her and she was cool and could make him laugh. If Jackson had mentioned those thoughts to his mother just a few months ago then her cat’s would have followed him everywhere and she would have scryed the waters of the future.

Jackson saw how Gemma hastily wiped her eyes even if she did her best to hide it and that made him instictively big brother worry. "Are you okay Gem? Sorry if I said something about Cooper that upsetted you…" He had no idea that his sister had cried because she had thought about their dead mother.

Shrugging Jackson said "I don’t know if I’m old enough to get a tattoo. I guess the age limit is 18 like everything else is…" He wasn’t planning on actually getting a tattoo today, he just wanted to look.

"Have you got all the books you want, so we can pay and go to Sugarplums?" At least she was okay with going to the candy place. Jackson knew they’d meet friends from school there that would look at them with pity but they had to face that eventually anyway. It was best to get used to it right now.

Books.

Dahlia really liked to read. If it could capture her attention, she would read it. Sometimes more than once. Okay, most times more than once. She wanted to know things. Not only about the subjects she enjoyed most but about other things too. Things that could help her in life, help her... with her magic. Help her with her feelings. With cooking. With boredom. Learning new crafts. Books could teach her everything.

That's how the past two hours were spent in Flourish and Blotts going through each section that could possible contain a book of interest. Yes, she was taking her sweet sweet time. Dahlia had nothing better to do today.

That's how the past two hours were spent in Flourish and Blotts going through each section that could possible contain a book of interest. Yes, she was taking her sweet sweet time. Dahlia had nothing better to do today.
Ollie didn't really care for books all that much. She was more of a trial-and-error kinda girl. But, if she wanted to be prepared, she better do the proper preparation. So she did. She had all her required books in her hands and decided to grab a few herbology books for her own pleasure. If she was going to have to read about something, might as well make it beneficial to her.

However, Ollie had the worst sense of direction and seemed to lose where she had seen that section.

Default DUN DUN DUN!! The brother who found us and the sister in criiiime!!

Lisa beamed at Maya as she mentioned that they ought to blame Evan instead of Noah this time. Yeah... it was becoming less and less fun to blame Noah for things since the whole him being sad.... It made her sad thinking about it and Maya was much more kinder to that so it made Lisa nod her head. “You’re right. It’s Evan’s fault.

She tilted her head as she listened to her sister’s rationale. It was true not all monsters were immortal. She raised her eyebrows, wondering if Maya was just trying to brush it to the side. To Lisa’s dismay, this distraction tactic was working.... and working ALL. TOO. WELL. “Let’s find one.

Lisa paused at Maya’s question. She paused again, contemplating her response. She sighed, feeling surprisingly guilty about this idea. “Well the whole mind control thing... what if he really likes his new girlfriend?” she asked her older sister with big wide eyes. What if they made something go horribly wrong... Also what if Kimmie liked someone else. “What if Kimmie likes someone else???” Their whole plan would be ruined.

The idea of being Empress of Hogwarts was very appealing to this four foot two tiny girl. “I love it. All the peasants will bow to me.... I mean....” she glanced at her older sister and smirked. “Us.” Their moment of dreaming of ruling the school was ruined shortly as she heard a voice that she thought they had managed to avoid up until this point.

Ru oh Scooby Doo. They found you.

Lisa turned around with the biggest grin on her face AS IF Evan was meant to meet them here all along. “Hi Evan! What took you so long?” she asked, curiously and casually of her brother. Heh. “Where’s No?

She smiled when Lisa agreed with her and nodded. Now that they had their story straight... Maya's eyes darted around the bookshop. Being in here made her heart happy. And what made her feel a little extra giddy was how she had seemingly tricked her sister and convinced her to look for a book instead of continuing to poke holes in her feeble lie. She hummed a song she didn't quite know the words to but was fairly certain she had heard it over the radio or from Noah's room as she took her sister's hand and walked along the aisles.

Maya stopped in her tracks when she heard her younger sister sigh and looked at her big eyes. The ones that often convinced their brothers to do her bidding. "Well... what if we just use mind control just so he tells us the truth about how much he likes his new girlfriend?" she asked. Though they wouldn't need to use mind control for that. Maya had read in one of Noah's textbooks about a potion that could do that very thing. Her heart sunk at the mention of Kimmie liking someone else. "But... what if Noah tells us he actually misses Kimmie and Kimmie tells us the same thing? Then we could make them get back together... and they'll be happy and we'll be happy too." There. That solved it.

She giggled at Lisa as she mentioned peasants bowing down to her. "Of course they'll bow do-"

Oh no.

They didn't need to turn around to know who that voice belonged to. Like Lisa, Maya turned around, smiling innocently as though they hadn't just run away from their brothers. "Evan!" she exclaimed, feigning shock. "We thought you guys were right behind us," she said as she peered around Evan, just to be sure Noah wasn't following.
