Default Muggle Studies Lesson 2: Highly Specific Muggle Objects

Hello, hello, hello. Another day, another lesson.

The classroom set up is nothing outlandish today. The room itself is eerily organized with a clean whiteboard, plenty of wiggle room, and nothing but the castle's new candles and a corny poster or two decorating the walls. Instead of rows of desks, there are several round tables set up for students to sit at and each has a basket of Healer Poppy's famous ~ bREaaAAaad ~ . Hopefully you saved some room after lunch so that you can have a nibble. It smeeeeeells deliiiiiiightful in here.

Your Professor is sat at his desk sans anything. Though he's usually fidgeting with some thing-a-mabob, he's actually just tip-tapping his fingers against his desk in antici-wait for it-pation this time around. What could you possibly be learning about today? Not the half eaten tuna sandwich on Schmoe's desk. That's just his unfinished lunch.

OOC: hi friends. welcome to our second ooc lesson of the term. be sure to familiarize yourself with the classroom rules if you haven't already. I’ll post in about 24-28 hours to officially start the lesson.

Lesson Progress:

+ Mini-Activity: Let's, uh, get the mess under control and find markers!
+ Question One: Pick a gadget, any gadget! What do you think it's used for?
+ Question Two: What are some inconveniences in our lives that we can fix with spells, but that a muggle might simply have to deal with?
+ Main Activity: Let's invent together!

Misa raised her hand. "Healing wounds!" she offered. "Muggles have to deal with the time it takes for the body to heal from like... a paper cut or a broken arm. We've got spells for those."

Which was one of the things she'd always choose magic over doing it herself. Cooking and baking she'd keep magic out of.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

"Fine," Ash sighed. "As long as you promise to grade our work with glitter pens." Schmoe should be more excited about sparkly glitter pens. If he didn't want them, could she keep them? Or give them to her friends? That would be cool. No? Okay.

Inconveniences? How inconvenient could these inconveniences be?

"Injures!" Her favorite subject, or at least the one she brought up the most. "To add on to what Misa said, wizards can just fix broken bones and big cuts pretty fast, but muggles can't. That doesn't mean they're not good at fixing it though. They have all sorts of medicines and inventions that are designed to help. Like tourniquets." And Ash could talk about this ALL DAY if she had the option. Did anybody here know what a tourniquet is? They would soon! And band-aids, and casts, and x-rays. And all the best ways to fix minor injuries. They were going to learn ALL THE THINGS! When Ash had the motivation to tell them. HA HA HA HA HA.

Oops, Schmoe seemed just as startled as she was about the object… that apparently could also cut pizzas? Huh… that seemed pretty smart, to be honest. Remy was pleased the Professor took it away from her.

She raised her hand quickly after the second question. She WAS going to mention the same answer that Kayne had used, the summoning of objects. But not wanting to elaborate the Slytherin’s answer, she went with something else. “My sister sometimes uses magic to finish the housework.” Remy smiled. “Cleaning, tidying, washing the dishes.” It was always impressive to see a kitchen all by itself.

Seeing the thumbs up from Professor Schmoe, Heath couldn't help but feel a bit pleased with himself. He acknowledged the gesture with a polite nod. So… were they supposed to keep cleaning or could they stop now that they'd found the markers? Unsure what to do, he placed the egg separator neatly on a shelf in the storage cupboard and looked to the front, awaiting further instruction.

He considered the question carefully, his mind buzzing with muggle inconveniences that he could use as answers. But which one should he give? Eyes landing on the egg separator once more, his thought turned to cooking. "Would waiting for one's food be considered an inconvenience?" he said after raising his hand. "We have spells to heat our food to the perfect temperature instantly, but muggles must wait for it to cook." Was that answer too out there? He felt like it was. Yeah, he was just gonna… keep quiet now.

Size of a carton? She changed the imaginary shape of the object with her hands to mimic said object. More rectangular less square and boxy but very orange.

Well that should be pretty easy to find, right?

Uhhhhh… five minutes later she wanted to take that thought back. She wished it were metal…. Well. It wasn’t as simple as she had anticipated! But Schmoe was schmoeing them on with the class.

Next she eyed the objects that the Professor pointed to and they were certainly an eclectic menagerie of things. Being muggleborn herself, she was very familiar with all the objects except the one that was like a cone. Was it a hat or an elaborate mask? She blinked, trying her best to understand it. Nothing came to mind.

Schmoe’s next question gave her pause. What can a magic spell do to solve some annoying Muggle inconveniences? She tried to think of things her parents and grandparents always asked her to find. “Well muggles have to get up to find a remote if they placed it in the wrong place. A wizard or witch can simply cast the summoning charm and it will come to them. Left your soda over at the kitchen bench- oh just wait! We have a solution. No need to get up from your cosy movie watching position!

"Lifting heavy things," Violet said, vividly remembering lugging those suitcases up and down the stairs of Muggle hotels, usually in the dead of night when her father was trying to sneak out without paying his bill. "and making a space bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside. Those little Muggle tents are really that small, inside and out."

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

There certainly were a lot of weird contraptions here. Claudine could tell that, much like her, a fair few of her classmates had ventured guesses as to what said contraptions might be used for. Naturally Schmoe sorted them all out. She looked blankly at the thingy she was holding. So that’s what it was used for. Claudine nodded her understanding at Schmoe.

Muggle inconveniences… there were quite a few and Claudine listened to a few as she thought of one of her own. She raised her hand to be called upon and when she was, Claudine said, “To fix inanimate objects. If something breaks, we can use Reparo but Muggles would sometimes have to throw out that object. Especially if it’s damaged beyond repair.’’

Nem was fine and content back at their original table, having done their part with collecting and returning the fidget spinners, ready to sit the rest of this one out. Nothing personal to Finneas Schmoe, it was just that Nem's interest waned with every passing second, no matter where they were or what they were doing, and they didn't have much to work with in the first place. Best for their professors to have no further expectations than for them to just turn up, sit quietly, and leave at the very end of the lesson. At least the Headsman had no grounds to have them make up all their missed classes - unnecessarily, mind you, and wasting their time in the process.

Suffice it to say, Nem didn't move or speak when the time came to start exploring the muggle gadgets and tools, only watched the others dispassionately and idly tried to work out if they'd have cared about any of this last week, last month, last year, or maybe the year before. Impossible to say.

Propping their chin up in one hand, and tracing triangles on the desk with the index finger of the other, Nem maintained their silence as the class continued. They could think of several things, actually, numerous annoying inconveniences that could be solved with simple spells, approximately half of which they knew were best left unsaid right now. For instance, if there was a hypothetical individual who wanted to study thestrals, it would be annoyingly inconvenient if they couldn't actually see them. One simple spell - quick flash of green light - and the problem was solved, and maybe that hypothetical individual would have all sorts of doors opened for them, even without factoring the thestrals in. It was almost immaterial in this context, because though muggles could see the creatures if they met that major requirement, most didn't know about them, let alone covet the chance to study them.

Would have been a valid answer all the same.

Her Lego Eiffel tower was coming along beautifully. It's been a while since the redhead has gotten her hands on some of these.

Thinking about Schmoe's question, Serena's mind took a trip down memory lane. She was as pureblood as old pureblood families came. She lived by pureblood standards and traditions, even some practiced by ancestors from centuries ago (which were secret), but she was also raised in muggle standards and traditions. Her godfather came from a mixed home, and so, Serena grew up in both worlds. Yet, she honored her pureblood heritage.

Her eyes skimmed the items around her and she recognized 80% of them. The weird headphones-mouth thing. She had no idea what that was, but assumed it was to hear your own breath.

As for annoying inconveniences, she had plenty of examples. Pleeeeeeeenty of them. "Accidental fires," she shared, hoping to catch Lisa's eyes. She knew this story because it was the first one Serena ever shared with her. "For example, if someone is making pancakes and something catches fire, a wizard can quickly put it out on the spot."

Ooooh, they were moving on now? Darn. She had been enjoying herself and they still hadn't located the markers yet. As Professor Schmoe spoke about gadgets and gizmos, Lia couldn't help but find herself humming a tune very very softly under her breath to herself. Then they were told to find something and explain what they thought it was. So when she spotted a lone fork, YES a FORK lying around it sent the formerly humming twelve year old into a near fit of hysterical giggles.

Lia couldn't help but pick it up along with what looked to be a toy dinosaur with its back missing but it was actually a taco holder! The only reason she knew this was because she herself had one when she was little and now her nieces and nephews had them. Returning to her desk and sitting down with the items she raised her hand and waited to be called on. She gave only her answer about the taco holding dino and not the fork which was known as a Dinglehopper to Scuttle and Ariel in one of her favorite movies. She had been so tempted to joke about it buuuuut she wasnt sure Schmoe would like that during his lesson.

When Tadhg handed her the orange pencil case she smiled at him. Opening it she saw only pencils inside. Well they could keep looking later.

"Spilling something on our shirt," Lia replied when she was called on. "We can fix that easily but they would be stuck with a messy shirt for the day."
Bless her. The help was very much appreciated. Schmoe much appreciation. Heh.

Er. AnYwAy.

"Quite true! There are, er, there are on the go stain removers, but er... Perhaps there might be more effective tools for navigating this problem, eh?" Hint hint hint. Aka. If she wanted to use this as inspiration for the next bit of class, it was a wonderful idea to go off of. Schmoe approved.

Once again, Kayne found himself smirking as the Professor's question gave himself another opportunity to riff off of the incident that had just previously occurred. Also, he was grateful for Schmoe giving the lost points back. He nodded as a gesture of thanks, and with a hand raised, the boy stated "Well I think a prime example of that is what I tried to do." A sly smile starting to cross Kayne's face. He continued by adding "Us wizards and witches can easily attempt to find a lost object or grab one that's far away via the use of the summoning. Whereas muggles would have to go find the objects themselves, just like how we did a second ago." Even though Kayne had somewhat of an obsession with himself, the boy still wasn't afraid to joke about mistakes that he made to make light of the situations.
Yes, let's not break anything today. Please. It had already been a long day, no need to make it any more difficult.

"This is, er, this is an excellent example," he bobbed his head as he thought it through. "It does save a lot of time to, er, just summon things." As they showcased just moments ago. Perhaps Kayne wanted to keep his answer in mind for the activity?

Perhaps with magic, it could be considered an inconvenience though. It just. Er. It wasn't exactly what he had in mind. BUT he appreciated the creativity. Could always count on the Ravenclaws for that!

"I, er, I will think about it," he smiled. And y'know what? He'd do it too. Maybe some glittered marks on their assignments would break up some of that monotony that could be schoolwork, eh? Schmoe didn't see anything wrong with it.

"That is, yes, that is quite true, Ms. Fox!" As always, he was very proud of the contribution that muggleborn students made in their class. Hopefully the others were listening closely. "Though, er, perhaps injuries are a little more than just an inconvenience.." Which was what he had tried to suggest in addressing Misa's answer too.

Finneas was a fan of the lego towers. Perhaps next lesson they could, er, they could take a break from the curriculum and spend a day building lego cities. Wouldn't that be fun?

But, er, anyway. He was curious to hear what Serena had to say and her answer certainly did not disappoint. "Fire extinguishers do take a lot longer than a flick of the wand, I must, er, I must agree with you there!"

Finneas made his way to center stage classroom, bumbling about and trying not to trip over any of the fallen items... that were still occupying so much space. He'd, er, he'd really have to do a deep clean after the lesson, it seemed. But, er, aNyWaY. He was very impressed by the depth of everyone's answers, and tried to smile properly to indicate as much.

"Now, er, keeping these inconveniences in mind, I'd like us all to put on our ~ thinking caps ~ today, as we step into the shoes of muggle inventors!" How exciting did this sound? He paused for all the cheering, which would obviously take place. Yes. Woo. Go class! "I'd like you all to start by deciding on a muggle inconvenience and, er, from there, you can brainstorm a new invention that could help with it. You can, er, you can design a poster or come up with a skit for the purpose of, er, explaining the invention to the class later."

He paused to look around the room. "Feel free to go back to your desks to do this, I'll, er, I'll have some poster board on my desk! And oh! Don't forget to give your invention a name and a design!"

OOC: hihi! For the main activity, Schmoe is asking your kiddos to think of a muggle inconvenience and create an invention that could help fix it! Students need to either a) make a poster or b) brainstorm a little skit about the invention. Be sure to give the invention a name!

We'll be moving on in 48 hours to do sales pitches!

Oooooooooh… projects like this were always tricky. Really having to use your imagination. The Gryffindor pulled open her notebook to sketch down some ideas, mostly starting with a brainstorm. Things that muggles needed help with… Uhhh, everything? This should be an easy task, but it was proving to be difficult.

Scribble, scribble. After lots of crossings out, Remy settled on her favourite idea Her drawing was atrocious but you got the general idea of what she was trying to portray.

SPOILER!!: “Remy’s notebook”

Portable bookcase
Portable…..
*splodge of ink*

Cotton candy pants
- a cushiony outfit that covers your whole body, protecting you from dangers such as falling from a height
- totally fashionable

*a badly drawn floofy costume, padding whole body*

Perfect. Now to start working on her poster and a witty product name. Remy glanced around to her peers, checking that she was doing this right.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

True. There was glue to help fix some things. Some things. She returned Schmoe’s smile, though it wasn’t a twitchy one. Anyway. They were moving on. So… inventors? Yet another topic that Claudine was not that educated on. Well, not the part about inventing something but rather, the names of the inventors. Luckily for her, they weren’t focusing on the latter.

Ooh. Designing a poster? Claudine was thrilled. She put the last of the vehicles that she’d been holding {another truck with ‘Ford’ printed on the front} then headed back to her seat, taking care not to injure herself, especially on any legos.

Luckily for her, her art supplies were always in her bag. But first, what inconvenience would she like to focus on? The girl took a moment to think. It didn’t take her that long to come up with an idea. Grabbing her pen and notebook, she began making notes.

SPOILER!!: Notes!
Issue: Computer keyboards usually have spaces between the keys. Dirt and other debris become trapped there.

Solution: Mini paintbrush-like device which has sticky pad-like bottoms that can be stuck between the spaces. This allows debris to be grabbed.

Simple enough, yeah?

She’d better get started with that poster now.

Evan had been here, but he'd been quiet the majority of class. Not something he usually did for Muggle Studies, as the subject and the Professor was his current favorite (well, one of two favorites anyways) but the smell of that lovely bread had him feeling so ~ p e a c e f u l ~ lately he hardly had that annoying urge to constantly try to prove himself in classes. Actually, he'd really rather curl up in the window seat in Ravenclaw tower and get some reading in. Some fiction even.

He'd cleaned up with the rest of them, never quite finding markers and at one point picking up a pizza cutter which he wrinkled his nose at and had shot a look in his head of houses direction. Muggle inventions were great, but a sharp pizza cutter in a massive amount of clutter?! Could one even imagine if that had sliced the Professor or someone else when it had fallen?! He wrapped it with a piece of parchment from his bag before putting it back.

Muggle inconveniences? Evan could think of a LOT. There was stains on t-shirts. tide only did so much, having to fetch water instead of summoning it, faster healing times, the list went on and on.

But one he did settle on, was actually while he looked at the pizza cutter he'd placed back in it's place. The biggest inconvenience was it was near IMPOSSIBLE to throw away sharp objects because of the concerns of injury that could result from someone reaching into trash and pricking themselves. Quite unsanitary, really. Maybe... there was something that could fix that? He did not provide a vocal answer to the question, and if he was entirely honest he didn't hear many other responses, but he did have an idea now for their next part of the project.

Standing, Evan went to the front to collect some materials for a poster, bringing it back and making a couple of quick notes so he could start designing.

Quote:
-- Cover for sharp objects like knives, scissors, pizza and rotary cutters, etc.
-- Reinforced with something soft (bubble wrap?) for maximum protection
-- Recyclable? Decomposable?
It was a good start. Now he just needed to make the poster presentable and.. iron out the actual details on if he wanted to include everything or if he wanted to settle for now for a cover to just protect.

Violet figured she might as well continue with the heavy furniture problem she'd already mentioned, so she pulled over her notebook, thought for a while, then began jotting down ideas.

SPOILER!!: Violet's proposal

Muggles can't use magic to move heavy furniture and may not always have other people to help them. My idea is to put smooth, flat objects under the furniture legs or bottom so that it can be slid across the floor by one person.

There. She wished she'd had something like that a couple of years ago when she'd had to move the couch away from the door in order to get out of that hotel room.

Kale was a SUPER easily distracted lil human kid. So the commotion with Schmoe really threw him off his groove. He didn't even know how to restart his brain effectively to be some kind of invention genius. And Kale did his best thinking when he was tapping anyhow, which he didn't think would be received well in classes. It was a nosy and loud irritating, and Kale figured most people thought he was nosy and irritating enough without the tap shoes.

The blonde dropped his head on his desk and slammed it three times. LIGHTLY. Think, think, think, Trent. What kind of things did Muggle find annoying that they hadn't already cracked?

OH. WAIT.

Nope. No solid ideas.

Two more thuds. To jumpstart the ol' noggin'.

And lightening struck his brain. MUGGLES HAD CRUDDY TRANSPORTATION. He could do pitch something to teleport them. It was brilliant. Surely muggle science could crack it. Mhmm.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Heath listened to the activity directions, growing more intrigued by the second. Inventions? Yes, please! He loved machinery, so this activity sounded right up his alley! Could they build a prototype of their invention? Ooh, maybe he could ask Professor Schmoe if he could use the legos to do it! Or not… His heart sank a little when he heard they'd be doing a poster or skit instead of a model, but that was okay. He could work with this! Now he just needed a concept…

He tapped his pencil against his lip as he brainstormed. First things first, he needed to think of a muggle inconvenience, but there were so many to choose from! He recalled his own experiences in the muggle world, and one annoyance stuck out at him: losing things. But what could he invent to fix it? There were already inventions to track and find some types of muggle objects, like smartphones. Maybe he could build on that.

He envisioned a device that could catalogue and track almost any object. It would need to be somewhat portable and inconspicuous… maybe designed to look like something else so it could hide in plain sight. Oh, he had it! It could look like a framed picture. That way it could hang on a wall to give the tracking sensors a better angle, and the picture part could become a touchscreen when someone needed to use it to find something. But what if the missing object in question wasn't in the same room as the tracker? He knew! It could link with other trackers in different areas of the home. That could work! He furiously jotted down his ideas:

SPOILER!!: Heath's invention

Problem: Wasted time searching for lost objects

Invention: The FastTrack, a device that catalogues and tracks personal items

How it works:
  • Product is meant to be mounted on a wall and is designed to look like a framed painting to complement any room decor
  • A series of sensors scan the molecular makeup of every object in the room
  • The device uses that information to identify, categorize, and number each object. This information is stored in a database.
  • When an object goes missing, the user touches the painting to reveal a touchscreen. Users can look up the missing object by name, category. or number using an onscreen keyboard.
  • Once the object's information has been pulled, the device will scan the room for the missing object. Device can be linked with other devices in different rooms to scan an entire house for a missing object.
  • When the object is found, the screen will display its location so the user can retrieve it.

Now he just needed to come up with a poster or skit for his presentation. Given his passion for acting and terrible drawing skills, he was more inclined toward the latter. Oh, maybe he could do one of those infomercials with the loud announcer and clumsy people who can't function without the product. Yeah, that was good… but he'd need a prop to illustrate the invention's design. Maybe he should do a skit and a poster?

Schmoe was a big proponent of IMAGINATION. Perhaps that is why he slotted in well with the Ravenclaws, despite having been a Hufflepuff back in his day. Er. AnYwAy. Yes. Imagination, quite right, Ms. Gaeltheos.

Finneas bumbled his way over to her desk, seeing how diligently she was working, he peeeeered over her shoulder in that teacher way. "An interesting concept," he smiled as he bobbed his head in approval. He especially appreciated the drawing. "As, er, as far as mobility goes, how easy is it to, er, move around in?" Years of watching ancient reruns of Shark Tank had prepared him for this moment, certainly.

SPOILER!!: Claudine

Finneas had, of course, taken notice of Evan's uncharacteristic lack of participation. But, er, he, too, was feeling ~ p e a c e f u l~, which perhaps had something to do with his lack of concern over the matter. Maybe, he'd, er, remember to feel concerned later. In any case, it did look like Evan was making some good headway on his work.

"This would be very useful, Mr. Nam!" Especially seeing as many students had found some sharp objects among the closet clutter. Yikes. "Have you, er, have you thought of any names?" He looked around, before offering him a smile. "Recyclable and decomposable?" Color Schmoe impressed! "What is, er, what is your thought process behind those particular aspects of design?" A student after his own heart.

Finneas was eager to see what Violet had come up with and was pleased to see she was running with her previous train of thought. It always helped to connect the dots, he found. "Excellent proposal, Ms. Blackthorne. What surfaces would this be the most useful for? Er, how well would it work with inclines?" The hills are killers.

Was? Kale? Okay?

Because ..................... the head slamming was. It was something. It was. Er.

Finneas approached with caution. "Errr.... Mr. Trent, how is, er, how is everything coming along?" Was his head okay? Did they need the healer? Did Schmoe need to crack some jokes to help alleviate some distress? Because he'd do it. He'd do it for Kale.

Oh, if only Schmoe knew. If only Schmoe knew that Heath had entertained the idea of making a prototype. Finneas would have encouraged it oh so very much. Especially if it involved the use of LEGOS.

But er. AnYwAy. "The FastTrack!" He read outloud with great enthusiasm. This was quite a big endeavor. He was schmoe proud. "This would be, er, this would be very useful, Mr. Jones. I, er, I like the out of the box thinking." The creativity was strong in this one. "So, er, if I am understanding correctly, each room in a house would require a FastTrack? Can they be used inside of vehicles?" He asked, thinking of some of his own troubles with losing items in his car. "Do you anticipate they would be expensive?"

OOC: There's 48 more hours until the end of class!

Lisa couldn’t wait to unleash the power of her imagination and her ability to talk like a saleswoman. Her answer to Schmoe’s question had only been the beginning. Picking up her quill before Schmoe could even conclude his sentence, she went to work brainstorming and jotting down ideas. It looked like a busy mind map with arrows and squiggles and words all at different angles. Words like teleportation app, instant snack, robotic pet, and more were written on her book. These were all fantastical but what did her parents always wish they had on them? Instant transportation or a pet to cuddle with? To Lisa, it made sense.

She moved to the bottom of the page and began adding her thoughts more coherently.

Problem To Solve: Not being lonely
Solution!: Provide a companion on demand

She stopped her quill and then scratched it out. They had apps like that already surely? And it wasn’t a great inconvenience…..

Forgetting keys would have been useful. Maybe a device like a rememberall? But you had phones that you could do that with too….

Problem To Solve: Forgetting what you were about to do!
Solution!: ….. just remember better? Be better overall? Nah, she couldn’t put that down as a solution. She’d have to narrow scope. What about her Appa forgetting things on the grocery list or forgetting said grocery list?

Idea: Say you have important tasks to do. You could use an enchanted clear non permanent tattoo sticker/paper/thing that you can put on your skin. Write the items you need to complete. The ink on your skin will be lightly coloured but as you get closer to needing to finish your task, the ink will become darker and darker and TINGLE! Reminding you to do it. Once done, the task will disappear off of the sticker/tattoo.

Mobility…

I mean… I think staying alive is more important than mobility…” she thought out loud. Like, when you wore a life jacket in the ocean your main priority was just to stay afloat, not necessarily worrying about being able to swim. But she did see the professors point, and tapped her chin with her quill to think of a solution. “Maybe the padding would just be on the important parts,” like chest padding, but she was careful not to completely rip off the idea of light armour. “It would cover the organs.” Smart.

Remy crossed out some of the arm and leg padding, and then made some pretty flowery designs on the chest piece to make it totally fashionable.

Inclines?!? Violet hadn't considered that; she'd been thinking more about moving things around in your house by yourself. She didn't think her invention would work for going uphill. Although," Violet went on excitedly as a thought occurred to her, "maybe you could have some sort of robot cart that would carry things over outdoor terrain--that you could program to react to different obstacles!"

Claudine was mighty proud of her invention, and was quite ready for Schmoe’s question. See, she had already thought of it. She smiled warmly at the man. “Thank you, professor.” Could he tell that she was thrilled with how this lesson was turning out to be? “That’s the thing. The ends wouldn’t stay sticky long term. They’ll require changing and the sticky pads as needed.”

Once she’d explained to Schmoe this bit, the Snakette set to work by using a regular pencil to draw a laptop. Now, not being fully familiar with certain Muggle devices, the laptop among them, the use of her textbook was put forth. Using the details in the book, Claudine replicated the laptop but obviously on a larger scale on the top quarter of the cardboard being used {it had been divided into four large squares; two at the top and two at the bottom}. On the screen was a huge sad face. In a bubble, much like in those comic books, the words ‘Help! I have dust trapped in the places you can’t see!’ In the second panel at the top, the laptop remained but was joined by her invention: it was about as thick as a pencil and had the length of an unsharpened, new pencil. Like some pens, at the top there was a button thing to push. When it was pushed, a long, thin extension descended with the tiny sticky pad stuck on the bottom. In another bubble, the words from the device read ‘I can help you there!’

The third panel depicted the device doing its thing by cleaning between the keys. The final panel depicted the device showing off the now dusty pad and the laptop’s frown turned upside down!

Oh dear...Kayne wasn't really an inventor, nor was he really all that good with coming up with muggle objects. This class, really took a turn for the worse. His mind just didn't simply create things, unless it was some form of plan involving pranks or other forms of mischief. However, the kid wasn't the type of person to simply give up. So, Kayne was about to make his best attempt of thinking about an invention.

The Mordrake boy thought and thought and thought. Taking a few minutes to work through what he could possibly come up with in his head. Then, something flew into Kayne's mind. Sure, what his idea was basically involved two things which were already created, and it would theoretically be extremely expensive to make, but it's not like they were actually about to bring their inventions to life. It was just an idea after all. So, Kayne got set to work, writing out the basis of his creation.

SPOILER!!: Invention
Problem- lost items
Solution- a long rod with two clamps at the bottom of it. Within those clamps are tiny cameras, which send a live video feed up to a small monitor at the top of the rod. The cameras have 3 different settings, regular, infrared, and x-ray. The rod can fold, and when unfolded is about 3 ft tall. This allows for reaching into a pile of things, or under a sofa with ease. Once the lost object has been located, a simple press of the button closes the clamps around the item, allowing for it's retrieval.

There, Kayne had prayed that would be good enough. Besides this idea, he really had nothing else that he could possibly do.

SPOILER!!: Lisa

And what an imagination she had. Finneas found himself more and more intrigued each time he walked by her table. It wasn't entirely clear which idea she was going for until his last loop around the classroom, but he did oooh and aaah, each time, regardless.

"This is an interesting concept," he bobbed his head as he read over her shoulder. "How will the tattoo know to, er, darken.... without magic?" Because, er, they were still in muggle studies, after all. Perhaps she knew a thing or two more than he did about tattooing. That wasn't exactly Schmoe's forte, after all.

SPOILER!!: Remy

Like, when you wore a life jacket in the ocean your main priority was just to stay afloat, not necessarily worrying about being able to swim. But she did see the professors point, and tapped her chin with her quill to think of a solution. “Maybe the padding would just be on the important parts,” like chest padding, but she was careful not to completely rip off the idea of light armour. “It would cover the organs.” Smart.

Remy crossed out some of the arm and leg padding, and then made some pretty flowery designs on the chest piece to make it totally fashionable.
"Quite true," Schmoe agreed. He valued safety too. Very much so. "That is, er, that is a neat solution. It would allow for wearing the Cotton Candy Pants in various settings. Not, er, not just when participating in dangerous sport?" Was that her original intention though? He had schmoe clue.

Her design was quite nice and Schmoe made sure to give her a thumbs up for all her good work. Now, er, did she plan on putting together a poster or was she more of the theatrical type? They seemed to have a good mix in this class.

SPOILER!!: Violet

Inclines?!? Violet hadn't considered that; she'd been thinking more about moving things around in your house by yourself. She didn't think her invention would work for going uphill. Schmoe nodded thoughtfully as he listened to the added explanation. "Ah, yes, very well." It was a neat idea, especially this addition of robotic carts. "I like the creativity, Ms. Blackthorne!" Made him so JAZZED.

"Have you thought of a name for the invention?"

SPOILER!!: Claudine

"Ah, now this is a good business model!" Both on the problem solving end, but also in the way that it would encourage increased business as consumers would be reliant upon more sticky pads to keep up with their cleaning efforts over tie. Schmoe was no business man, but even he could understand such a need for demand.

Her poster was coming together quite nicely too. Ms. Blaze always had a knack for artistic endeavors. "Nicely done!" He saluted her as he did another loop around the room.

There, Kayne had prayed that would be good enough. Besides this idea, he really had nothing else that he could possibly do.

On the contrary! Finneas thought Kayne to be a great inventor based upon his idea alone. "This would be very useful, heh," he chuckled, mostly to himself, as he leaned over the young man and read through some of the notes. "Can it locate markers?" Because Schmoe might need that expertise again in the future

____

After this round of checking up on students, Schmoe made his way back to the front of the room... Which was still in a state of disarray. But. Er. What can you do!? The Schmoe must go on, amiright!? Er. Anway, AnYwAy, ANYWAY. Back to the point. "Whoever would like to volunteer to go first for their presentation, the, er, the floor is all yours!"

Well. Some of the floor. Most of the floor was still....... a playground of random muggle objects.

OOC: there's about 24 hours left of class time! if you're ready to present your invention, you can go ahead and do so - just post as if Schmoe gave the thumbs up to go ahead and take your turn!

otherwise, no need to rush through things <3 students can continue to work through other people's presentations too! take it at your own pace.

Well, she supposed she couldn’t call them cotton candy pants anymore if she had removed the pants part of the outfit. Remy thought haaardd for a solution, but thinking of a witty name for a product turned out to be the most difficult part of the process. She scribbled a few ideas down, and then planned her big reveal to the class. A poster would be the easiest option, she supposed.

Remy found a clear piece of parchment and sketched her design carefully. A fluffy chest piece with flowers and pastel colours to decorate it.

She created a fancy font to write an eye catching headline, similar to the fonts of the magazines they had studied in History of Magic.

Quote:
The headline read: Want to jump from a height without squashing your vital organs?

Followed by the title of the product: Cotton Threadz
The design of the poster looked pretty cool, but Remy started to doubt the whole concept behind her product. Yeah, it might protect your vital organs, but it certainly wouldn’t stop broken bones. And she knew muggles couldn’t fix their bones with a simple spell. She decided to add a small disclaimer at the bottom.

Quote:
Disclaimer: Cotton Threadz is not responsible for broken bones.
She giggled, hoping the Professor would find it funny.

Anywho… Remy decided to volunteer to present her idea first, she was feeling brave. She took to the stage and began by holding up her magnificent poster. “Cotton Threadz. A totally fashionable alternative to a suit of armour. It comes in every colour imaginable, and it will cover your vital organs when going about your business. It’s a dangerous world out there, you never know when you could fall off a building, or hit by an automobile.” True. “Stay alive, and look good while doing it.” Dang, she should add that to her poster.

And that was it, her pitch. Remy took a bow and returned to her seat.

Violet wasn't entirely pleased with her name--she didn't think it flashy enough--but at least it got the point across. She took a last look at her poster before going up to make her presentation.

Quote:
Moving Buddies

Tired of breaking your back or paying expensive movers? Make your next move with ease with Moving Buddies!
When it was her turn, Violet stepped to the front, centered her poster carefully, and began (she wasn't quite as nervous about speaking in public as she used to be, but it still made her stomach churn).

"Moving Buddies are handy gliding pads that can be placed under furniture or other heavy objects that one wishes to re-locate. Simply slide them underneath the object and move it with ease.

A unique robotic interface enables one to even move things outside, over rough terrain or up and down inclines. Programming manual is included and is easy to follow."

Finishing her presentation, Violet neatly gathered up her materials and returned to her seat, making sure to pass by Professor Schmoe on her way back. "Pssst! Professor Schmoe! she whispered. "Could I please see you after class? It's important." Then she continued on back to her seat as if nothing unusual had happened.
