Default Muggle Studies Lesson 1: Out in the Cold

A blanket of snow covers the grounds, and the sky is still mostly overcast from the remaining clouds that brought the past few days' snowfall. Occasionally the afternoon sun manages to peek out from behind the clouds as you make your way to today's Muggle Studies lesson. The pathways are clear, and an additional makeshift one has also been cleared to lead you to the place on the grounds sectioned off for the lesson.

Dressed in layers to stay warm, Professor Rosalie Applewood stands at the place where the cleared-snow trail meets the "classroom": to her left, you may notice a tarp covering something - or many somethings? - sitting on top of a second tarp on the ground. To her right are four long log benches placed around a large fire pit - though it is currently lacking a fire, and wood for that matter. On the other side of the fire pit and benches are a cluster of trees. The area is otherwise quite open. And snowy. There has been no effort to clear the snow around here, only for the path that leads the way here.

Even so, come on over and take a seat on one of the benches. Class will begin shortly.

OOC: Hi, everyone! Welcome to Muggle Studies! Although this is our first lesson OOC, please bear in mind that there would have been several IC lessons prior to this point in the term. And don't forget to check out the class rules if you haven't already. The lesson will begin approximately 24 hours from now. The lesson has begun!

Still suuuuuper cold, Kins didn’t look around too much while she waited for class to begin, though she did offer Cece a big smile as she walked by. Claudine got a big smile too. See? No one wanted class outside in the COLD weather. Why would Professor Applewood do this to them!? It was TORTURE.

Fortunately, Kins could redirect her focus on the discussion regarding camping, which helped her feel less cold. Funny how that stuff worked out, huh? She wasn’t going to question it… Mostly because she wasn’t thinking about it anymore. ”Camping is nice because you get to sleep with other people and not just alone.” Not that she slept alone at Hogwarts either, Emm and Kizzy still had their megabed. But at home she had to sleep by herself, so camping was a good alternative. "And sleeping bags are super cozy and keep in all the warmth even when it's cold... and snowing."

Here, she looked at her Professor with all the conviction. Did she get that? Warmth. Did Professor Applewood see what Kins was trying to hint at? Warmth. Did she have sleeping bags for them? Because. Warmth. As it turned out, Kinsay was still cold.

He removed his top scarf, wrapping it around Lisa to give a little extra warmth as Professor Applewood started the lesson. "That should tide you over until we're moving." He whispered to her, before turning his attention back to the lesson.

Wait. They were talking about camping??? This was certainly right up his alley. He actually grinned a little, before turning to look at Liss and catch Maya's eye as well. Camping was certainly something they knew about.

His hand raised in the air and waited to be called on. "We go camping every summer. Sometimes for the beach, sometimes in the woods. I've always enjoyed it because hiking is a great source of exercise and it gives a nice sense of solitude. It's quiet in the woods, and sometimes it's just you and some cute woodland creatures."
Rosalie nodded. "Excellent, yes. Hiking is a fantastic way to exercise, and the natural environment is also a great way to refresh your mind too."

She didn’t explain it cause she didn’t want to. She could bet that nobody here wanted to know why anyway. “I guess some people really like sleeping on the ground outside and making food with a campfire?” Ash couldn’t imagine why.
Rosalie smiled. "I appreciate your honesty, Miss Fox." No harm in admitting it was not something one wanted to do in one's free time. "Some people do enjoy those aspects of it, yes, good."

Thank goodness for Heating Charms. Speaking of… well, Heat with an H at the end… the Snakette smiled at the boyfriend. “Hi, you.” Good to see that Heath wasn’t frozen to a popsicle.

They would be moving around? Then there was a possibility that Claudine might need to lift the Heating Charm from her clothing. She’d see how that would go when that bridge popped up before her. The seventh year gave Ash a pitying look; it was sad the younger girl had negative experiences with camping. “It helps people get away from their everyday lives,” she volunteered, lowering her hand as she was called upon. “It can help them to be more relaxed and recharged.”
A hint of amusement glimmered in Rosalie's eyes, noting Miss Blaze's agreement with Miss James. She said nothing more though.

"It can, yes, good." She nodded. "Sometimes stepping away from our usual routines can be really refreshing."

To be honest, camping was not what she’d expected to be learning about today. She’d certainly never gone camping in snow before, but she had plenty of other experiences to speak on. ”I like the whole sleeping under the stars thing best. Plus when you’re out in nature, you really talk with the people you’re with, you know? And you have to work together to set up camp. Camping is a good bonding experience.”
Rosalie nodded. "Great point, yes. It is often easier to give our undivided attention to each other when we're all out in nature together."

And maybe the exercise, too, like Evan had said. She didn't know that all those Nams liked camping too. "Plus, if it's raining, it's like a little nature lullaby."
Rosalie smiled. "I like the way you describe the rain." Falling asleep to the sound of rain was always a pleasant experience, so thinking of it like nature's lullaby made a lot of sense. "And all of those are very enjoyable parts of the camping experience, yes."

At the mention of camping, Lisa’s eyebrows shot up and she couldn’t help but the glance that Evan sent her way. SHE WAS SUPER EXCITED TO BE DISCUSSING CAMPING. She knew loads about camping because the Nam’s had gone so often. Well… the last time they had gone was to introduce their new adopted sister which didn’t go over so well……. Errr… and poor Noah had just come back from Hogwarts after losing a lot of wait. That was the start of skeleton-esque Noah. Fortunately he was okay in the end. Solana…. She missed. Camping brought memories of family fun as well as sad moments too…

Like Evan said, we go camping every summer. It’s fun and an inexpensive holiday. Cheaper than a hotel room,” she said, taking a business minded approach. “Camping can be fun but if you’re not fully prepared… it can be a disaster.
"That's an excellent point too, yes. It can be much cheaper than other ways to spend a vacation." Rosalie nodded. "And it is very important to prepared beforehand, yes."

"I like cooking food over a fire. I don't know why, but I think it tastes better."
Rosalie nodded. "I think that's a great reason. There is something unique about a campfire-cooked meal compared to a kitchen." Not that something made in the kitchen was worse by any means, but there was certainly a difference.

If so, Professor Applewood couldn't have picked a worse time of year for it!

As Heath heard the question, his thoughts immediately turned to the camping trips his family used to go on when he was a kid… back before his siblings and cousins all settled in their careers and moved away. It appeared that after so many trips, he'd have the whole camping thing down, but everyone else was so much better at it than him! At least camping provided some good stargazing opportunities. That was his favorite part - well, that and one other thing.

He raised his hand and said, "Some people like camping because it's a shared bonding experience with family and friends." He was too shy to tie that into his own camping experience, but he hoped his answer would suffice without it.
"Very true, yes." Rosalie nodded. "It's an excellent way to spend time with those you love." Definitely one of the best parts about camping, for sure.

The Hufflepuff raised her hand and when her turn came, she began to speak. ”I go camping with my mom sometimes. We go to the beach and the mountains. I really like camping. It’s fun and peaceful, being outside with nature……..but, it is definitely not as cold as it is here.”
"Wonderful, yes, there is something very peaceful about nature." Rosalie nodded. The tranquility of nature was a very special aspect of it.

"An excellent point, yes." Rosalie nodded, a flicker of amusement in her eyes. "Sleeping bags excel at keeping a person very warm and cozy at night." So yes, the emphasis on warmth and cold was indeed noted.

Once there were no more hands raised to answer, it was time to continue on. The sooner they got through this short discussion section, the sooner they could move on to the more active part of the lesson.

"Great answers, everyone." Rosalie grinned. "You've touched on a number of the benefits and experiences that can be had while camping. We know it can be a great way to bond with your loved ones and to connect with nature through all the different opportunities it provides: hiking, cooking over a campfire, even walking along the beach, and numerous other activities as well. Nature has a way of helping us to find peace with each other and with ourselves. Understandably, camping during the warmer months is typically preferred, but those who are particularly adventurous also enjoy the great outdoors even during the wintertime.

"Of course, regardless of the season, it still may not be everyone's cup of tea,"
as Miss Fox had indicated, "and that's okay too. Either way, camping can be a great experience, but it can also turn out poorly without the right preparation beforehand, as Miss Nam pointed out." She gave the young Ravenclaw a nod. "So I want us to address some of those things. Camping at any time comes with potential difficulties, but doing so during the winter comes with additional challenges. What is one of the difficulties or dangers that you need to watch out for, either during the summer or the winter or even both?"

OOC: Thanks for the great responses so far, everyone! <3 Second question is up, and I'll move class along in approximately 24-27 hours!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Applewood was right: everyone had their own preferences but did people really go camping in the winter? If so, Claudine thought that they might not be all that right in the head. How would fires even be lit? These people were referred to as ‘Muggles’ for a reason. So what did campers need to worry about when camping? The seventh year thought for a bit.

There was the danger of wild animals and unexpected weather. There were the hindrances that came with making preparations… wow. Now that she thought of it, there were so many things that could go wrong with camping. Claudine raised her hand. “If you unknowingly pitched and secured your tent incorrectly, then you risk it being carted off in the wind or collapsing.”

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina didn't really realise that people went camping during winters. One question - WHY?? Why would anyone even want to spend their time outside when it's freezing?? Yes, heating charms could be used but still. Weird.

"Well, weather is almost always unpredictable. It can end up raining or snowing during winters. One needs to be prepared for bad weather."

Camping in dangerous conditions? See, Phoebe hadn't even included that on her list of possible things to worry about. Like, what if you set up a tent in the path of an avalanche? Or a flood? Merlin, there was a whole list of new things to consider.

"What if it rains and your tent fills up with rain and your socks get wet and your shoes squish? And you get athlete's foot so bad that you die."

Difficulties and dangers of camping? At any time of the year? Evan's hand raised again as well to offer a response. This was certainly a subject matter in which he held extreme interest. Though he would not let his thoughts move towards where Liss' were, not that he knew. "You have to watch out for nature's predators. Bears and mountain lions or... really any other predators depending on where you are camping can be attracted to the smell of whatever sustenance you've brought for yourself. Precautions should be taken to make sure that food is kept in a tree and decent way from your tents for safety's sake." Because losing your lunch was not worth BEING lunch.

Dahlia liked camping. It was something her family did all of the time for years now. She had gone camping with Tadhg and his family too. So it was not only something that she enjoyed doing but it was something she knew a lot about. Plus her Papa own a camping and outdoors shop. Outdoor things was her element.. well besides creatures and plants.

Raising her hand, she waited to be called on. "You always have to be aware of where you are, where you were and where you are going. Being out in the wilderness it's very easy to get lost and extreme weather makes it worse. Like when it's really hot out, you need to know where a clean water source is or how to filter your own water so that you can have fresh water." Witches and wizards wouldn't have that issue but muggles certainly would.

Jordyn listened as the professor summarized everyone’s answers. The next question focused on the potential dangers one could face while camping. Thinking about the many posible dangers, the Hufflepuff settled on one in particular. She raised her hand and then began to speak.

“it is always possible that you could get injured while camping or anywhere really. It could be anything from a cut to a twisted ankle or maybe even a blister from boots that are too tight. So you should always have a first aid kit with you because you just never know what might happen.” It never hurt to be prepared.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash was not so worried about bears and bugs and other dangerous camping things. No, she was worried about other things. "If you're in danger or hurt in a remote area, nobody's coming to help you." She paused for a while. "I would also like to add that familiarity breeds contempt and you might go camping with someone you think you like, only to find out that they are the worst." Ash was talking about camping. But she was mostly just thinking about The Room. Sleeping on the floor right next to everyone else, with nothing to comfort you and in danger all the time. Camping was like the room but voluntary and with no evil humans(hopefully). She didn't say that, but she thought it.

She responded to Claudine's pitying look by silently moving a little closer to her pretend sister. She wished she could lean on her shoulder or something, but she didn't ask.

Well, knowing what type of clothing to pack could be tricky ‘cause even in summer it can be hot during the day, but really cool at night. Winter means not only cold, but a lot of the time wet too because the snow melts on your clothes.” So like, packing light was kind of hard, you know? ”You kind of have to think ahead and be prepared for anything while also not packing so many clothes that your mum and dad end up lecturing you.” Paaaaause. ”Not that that’s ever happened to me before or anything.”

There were lots of ways to answer this question, which was exactly why Kins was quiet for so long. She was thinking the Big Thoughts. Except all those Big Thoughts vanished the moment Fi raised her hand. Kins liked to pay lots of attention when her people spoke in class. In case she needed to agree with them, which she usually did.

O_________O

"Can you really die from athlete's foot?!" That was a horrible way to go. Imagine having to tell someone that you died because your foot was too big a football fan. Tragic. "Why do they call it athlete's foot if anyone can get it and not just athletes?" Sounded like false advertising.

Non-athletic people liked to go camping too! They should be just as scared of dying because of foot problems.

All of these things sounded highly undesirable, making Violet feel even surer that she didn't like camping. "Besides predatory animals, you could run into dangerous plants--like poison oak or ivy. Some people forage for food in the wild, but if they don't really know what they're doing, they could poison themselves."

Claudine raised her hand. “If you unknowingly pitched and secured your tent incorrectly, then you risk it being carted off in the wind or collapsing.”
"That's very true." Rosalie nodded. "Losing your tent makes camping safely a lot more difficult." A few people might be able to handle camping without one, but they would need to be a very skilled outdoors-person for that.

"Well, weather is almost always unpredictable. It can end up raining or snowing during winters. One needs to be prepared for bad weather."
"Weather is definitely important to pay attention too, yes." Rosalie nodded. "It's wise to check the forecast for the area you'll be camping in, but even then, weather can change unexpectedly, so it's important to prepare just in case."

"What if it rains and your tent fills up with rain and your socks get wet and your shoes squish? And you get athlete's foot so bad that you die."
Oh, Miss James had created quite a dramatic story progression for her answer. "As far as I know athlete's foot itself isn't fatal, but it's certainly not something you want to catch while camping, especially untreated. And you are correct overall that a severe rain event can impact your tent and your health. Very good." Rain had many benefits, but it could also cause a lot of damage as well.

"Wildlife, yes." Rosalie nodded. "Animals are often drawn to the smell of food, and some of them can be dangerous when they're in pursuit of something to eat. So keeping it away from your tent, as you mentioned, is one of the many things to keep in mind when storing food."

Rosalie nodded. "Excellent points, yes! Keeping aware of your surroundings and your location is key, as it ensuring you always have water on hand."

“it is always possible that you could get injured while camping or anywhere really. It could be anything from a cut to a twisted ankle or maybe even a blister from boots that are too tight. So you should always have a first aid kit with you because you just never know what might happen.” It never hurt to be prepared.
"Yes, great point!" She nodded. "Bringing a first aid kit along with you is a very wise idea. It's important to be careful to prevent injuring yourself, but sometimes accidents happen, so having some of the essentials to help yourself until you can get to a doctor." Or a Healer, if you were a wizard, but this was Muggle Studies after all.

Ash was talking about camping.

"That's true, and certainly one of the things to keep in mind if you're camping by yourself." Which some people did do, so it came with just as many challenges as camping with other people. Such as the additional statement Miss Fox added. "That's also possible, yes. It's important to be mindful about who you're going to be camping with." It wasn't so different from having a roommate in some ways. Many times it could bring you closer, but other times it could lead to a ruined friendship.

Rosalie smiled. Packing too many clothes...oh yes, she could relate to that struggle. "Of course, yes, that's an excellent point. Preparing for everything is important, but there can be such a thing as over-preparation. Finding the balance between that can be difficult to manage sometimes."

It wasn't a surprise to find this Miss James jumping off another answer with questions of her own. It also wasn't something Rosalie minded. It meant the Gryffindor was paying attention after all. "I haven't heard of anyone dying from it specifically, but it can become a big problem if left untreated. As for its name, it likely was called that because it's most common among athletes, even if it's not exclusive to them. I'm sure it has a proper clinical name too." What it was though, she didn't know off the top of her head.

"Oh yes, excellent point! Sometimes it's easy to forget that plants can be just as much of a danger as wild animals. So it's important to know what to watch out for, especially when it comes to foraging." Putting just anything one found out in the wild into one's mouth was very ill advised.

No more hands? Then it was time to continue on!

"Excellent, everyone! You've pointed out several of the challenges that you need to be mindful of when preparing for a camping trip during any season. There are many more we could list out, but I think we've covered a lot of the major ones, so we'll continue on.

"You'll be happy to know I'm not sending you on a full-on camping trip out here in the snow."
Or she assumed they would be, based on previous comments. Heh. "But I do want to give you just a little bit of hands-on experience as if we were."

And now she moved over to where the tarp was, grabbing the edges of one side, and removing it with a flourish, revealing an assortment of tent bags laying on top of another tarp and of snowshoes lying next to them. There was also a large cooler off to the side, currently closed.

"We're going to practice setting up our tents! It's very similar to setting up a tent during the warmer months, for those who have been camping before, but there are a few additional steps to complete with this snow on the ground.

"First, you'll want to grab a pair of snowshoes."
She selected her own pair of snowshoes and strapped them on as she spoke. "Because before you begin setting up your tent, you'll want to pack down the snow with your shoes in the spot you've selected." She carefully stamped down on a section in front of her, flattening the snow down. "When the snow is more loose and soft like it is now, it's more likely to melt under you and your tent when you lay down to sleep at night, and it won't be comfortable if that happens. You want it as flat and compact as possible so it'll harden together and support your weight."

Now that she had a section flattened down, she selected a tent bag, pulling out the tent supplies. "Once you've finished an area large enough for your tent, you may begin setting that up." She pulled out a laminated piece of paper from the bag. "Each bag has the steps listed on a paper like this for easy reference if you need it, but I will do a quick demonstration as well." For any who found it helpful to watch something before trying it themselves.

She moved through the steps as she spoke. "You'll lay out the ground tarp like so. Shiny side up. Then lay out the body of the tent on top and align the corners. Next, carefully assemble the tentpoles together, then slide them into the sleeves on top of the tent, bending them and raising the tent up to match the ends up with the metal rings at the base of the tent. Then lay out the rain fly on top of the tent and align the metal rings on the corners with the ones on the tent's corners. And then it's time to stake your tent. The stakes we have here are specifically for the snow. You'll need to dig a small ditch in the snow near each corner, loop your tent's rope through the holes on the snow stake, and then you may either lay the stake down horizontally or push it in vertically. Then cover over it with snow and pack the snow down like you did earlier. Do this for each corner. And then you're done!" At least, for their purposes for the lesson.

"One more thing to keep in mind is the direction of the wind." There wasn't any wind blowing at the moment, which was probably a good thing, but important to mention even so. "It's good to have natural wind barriers nearby, such as trees, but you can also create your own with the snow itself. Once your tent is up, you may want to try your hand at creating a snow wall around it." It was pretty much exactly what it sounded like, just a wall made of snow. Very simple.

She smiled at them all. "You may work on these tasks individually or with a partner. There are plenty of snowshoes and tents for everyone. And I'll be happy to assist with any questions you may have. We'll continue on to our next task in about 25 minutes."

OOC: Thanks for your patience, everyone! <3 It's mini activity time! You have at least 48 hours before we move on to the main activity.

Those close to Noah Mordaunt would know that the sixth year was very fond of the outdoors, regardless of the weather. It didn't matter if it was scorching hot, or freezing. As long as it was the great outdoors, he was in his element. Camping brought so many good memories to his mind, thus the grin on his face as the lesson went on.

Setting up camp was something he'd done so many times already, almost always being assigned to the task by his much older friends in the muggle world. Thus, today's activity should be a breeze. Noah looked around as he stood up to get his supplies, but stopped as he considered the younger students in the classroom. "Does anyone need an older student's help?" meaning, was there anyone who'd want to partner up with this good-looking cover boy Gryffindor?

He'd be lying if he were to say he wasn't excited about this lesson so far. They were actually going to set up tents and do some pretend camping type things? He loved doing that, and he was very used to putting up the tents too since Appa usually had him help. Once they were released to start, he moved to grab one of the tent bags, as well as a set of snowshoes. Finding himself a spot to set up, Evan put down the tarp and sat to get the snowshoes on his feet before remembering to also offer a partner for anyone who wasn't familiar with this. "If anyone wants to work with me too, they're welcome to."

But in the mean time, he'd get started. He slowly stood once his snowshoes were on and picked a patch to start trampling down to put the tent up on after.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

All that was left was for her to do was to put her arm around Ashley in order to comfort her. As it was, Claudine lightly nudged her when the girl moved closer. Poor Ash. Maybe one day she’d have a camping experience that will change her outlook.

Listening to the other answers as she leaned lightly against Ash’s shoulder, the Snakette couldn’t help but marvel about the number of things that could go wrong. Who knew? Ooh, look at the snowshoes. She liked the colours on them more than on the tent bags. “Come on, let’s grab our shoes, Ash.” She felt responsible for the younger girl, okay? Claudine looked over at Heath and smiled at him, a way of letting him know that he was welcome to join them. She selected a pair of pink snow shoes and carefully pulled them on.

Huh.

She had not known that it was best to stamp on the snow like that before pitching a tent. Claudine followed Applewood’s lead. “It’s kind of fun,’’ she remarked to Ash and Heath.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash picked out a pair of pretty blue snowshoes and obediently followed Claudine. “We have to pick a spot with no evil energy. And then we can pack down the snow and make a little wall of snow.” How did you pick out a spot? Ash wasn’t sure. “I like that spot over there.” She pointed at a spot near the edges that looked alright. It didn’t seem to be evil, and it was sorta close to trees.

True, he'd been expecting a tiny small firstie to come up for help, so it was a bit of a surprise to see Violet sidling up next to him. It wasn't a big deal really, he just wanted to help, and make the activity less boring for him.

"Sure, why not?" Noah gave Violet a nod and a grin as he went towards the mound of supply to get them started. "We can work on that spot over there," he said gesturing his head towards the blank space nearby Claudine and Ash's. "Here's a a pair of snowshoes for you, mademoiselle...let's go!" he said carrying all of their needed gear onto his back, "We start off by packing the snow in using our snowshoes...shouldn't be hard." he said with a smile, as he get on with the first task.

"Have you ever gone camping, Miss Violet?" small talk was good, yes?

Dahlia gave a bright smile as she continued to listen to Carton talk and talk and talllllllk. This was all things that she knew how to do but that didn't keep her from listening and watching him fully demonstrate how to pack down the snow, properly put up the tent and built a snow wall around it for extra security. There was nothing in making sure that she knew she would be doing everything correctly.

"If anyone would like to work together I know what I'm doing," she offered to the entire group as she made her way over to collect herself a pair of snowshoes and the rest of the camping things. Next it was to find a nice spot not to far from everyone else but far enough away so that she would have her own little area. Once that was taken care of she set everything down and strapped the snowshoes onto her feet.

Back and forth she began to walk, stomping down the snow a bit so it would harden enough underneath her feet for her tent. So far so good.

Claudine was inclined to agree. No evil energy meant less chances of a ghost rising up and haunting their tent. Or something like that. That’s why she had followed Ash’s acquired spot and nodded her agreement. And like she said a short while back, this was quite fun even though there must be a spell for this sort of thing. “You getting along alright there?’’ Because shortly this little team would need to get moving along. The Snakette did a fair bit more ‘packing’ then stopped to look at the space they had been working on. Indeed the snow looked more compact.

A bag was grabbed and brought over. Inside of it, the laminated paper was located. Claudine did her best to focus on Appleby but goodness, this was complicated work. She could only hope that Ash was focusing. “Hey, Ash? Help me get this tarp on the ground, yeah?” Claudine was already holding two ends of the tarp.

He'd gotten a good portion of the patch stamped down when Evan could hear Val's voice behind him. He turned his head a bit, offering a small smile and a nod of his head. "Absolutely. Want to finish stamping down the snow and I'll work on getting the contents of the bag out?" Conquer and divide.

Without waiting for an answer, he moved over to pull the tent bag closer to him, pulling out the ground tarp first and unfurling it so once Val was done they could lay it out over the space together and move on to the body. In an effort to save time, he was also doing things a little out of order and went ahead and pulled out the poles as well to carefully begin the assembly so they'd be ready to go as well when they were ready to feed through.

SPOILER!!: Question 2 catchup
Heath listened intently as Professor Applewood started speaking again. The more he heard, the less sure he was what to make of it. Were they actually going camping tonight? In this weather? The questions seemed to be going in that direction. NEver mind, he supposed he’d find out soon. For now, he focused on the question.

His thoughts immediately turned to dangers related to weather, such as hypothermia and heat exhaustion, but unsurprisingly, that was one of the first things said. What else could he say? He thought back to his own experiences with camping, and he recalled getting a nasty rash from poison ivy his first time. Had anyone said that? Not the story bit because that was embarrassing, but plants in general. He didn’t think anyone had. Raising his hand, he said, “You have to be aware of the plants around you. Some of them are poisonous to eat or touch, so it’s best to leave them alone unless you know what you’re doing.”

Oh, so they were camping? Heath wasn’t sure whether to be intrigued or worried about that. Slightly more the former at the moment, but that could change. He watched with rapt attention as Professor Applewood demonstrated the proper way to pitch a tent the muggle way. When he went camping with his family, Uncle Ad always used magic to pitch the tents, so this was a learning experience for Heath. Jumping Jawas, that was a lot of steps! He was relieved to know that there was an instruction paper in the bags because there’s no way he would’ve remembered all that - and he had a pretty good memory!

Catching the look from Claudine, he followed her and Ash. After picking out a pair of blue snowshoes, he helped the girls pack down the snow. A slight chuckle escaped him as he heard Claudine’s words, and he shot her a smile. She was right; it was fun! Another smile went to Ash. “Good choice of a spot, Ash!” he said.

Seeing Claudine grab the tarp, he automatically moved to the other side. “Need more help with this tarp?” he asked. If not, he could get the tent body out of the bag and have it ready to go down when the girls finished laying the tarp. Looking to Ash, he added, “We could each take one corner of the tarp.”
