P H A S E _O N E: Congratulations! You're a parent.
This long-term project comes to you as no surprise. Last week's class was entirely dedicated to muggle babycare techniques, a briefing on project specific instructions, and detailed explanations of what was to come. Today when you walk into the classroom, it isn't for a lesson! Instead, you have come here to pick up your brand new (fake) BABY! Congratulations, you're A PARENT... for the next three months.
The classroom itself is set up with several tables around the room. The tables themselves aren't very extraordinary, on the tables, however, are lots and lots of baby-dolls. Meanwhile, Finneas is sitting at his desk with a baby registry on hand. You can only assume that you'll be needing to sign it soon. Your Professor has a HUGE smile on his face as he plays with his fidget spinner. Today is a wonderful day to be a guardian.
You know (because Finneas told you last class) not to take a seat, but to instead approach your Professor who will give you further instructions. You're not here for a lesson today! You're here to pick up your fake-BABY.
OOC: hi! This is our long-term assignment for this term! This isn't a lesson thread! Just post in here and I'll post a reply for you ASAP to get you started. That's all it takes!
This thread will stay open for the duration of the assignment (until march 26). I suggest starting on this phase ASAP so that you have as much time as you need, but there's no set framework of when you need to post, all up to your individual needs.
IMPORTANT: If choosing to co-parent, please coordinate posting in here with your partner. Co-parenting is not required, just another opportunity to interact with your classmates.

Each student (or pair, if choosing to co-parent) will receive one baby doll to take care of over the course of the next 3 months & 1 baby bag containing all the essentials for babycare
What to know about the dolls? With the aid of technology, the dolls have been programed to dirty nappies, need burping, sleep, get hungry, cry, etc. They have a mechanism that records all sounds and a way to alert your Professor should you think to take the doll apart in search of the recorder. The babies behave in a way that mirrors real children, and they respond to love and affection accordingly. They do not like to be left alone and are rather fragile.
What’s in the baby bag? Nappies, bottles, dummy/pacifier, baby food, baby powder, wipes and flannels, etc.
Over the course of the next 3 months, you must take your baby with you at all times. Take care to treat it with love (aka feeding it when hungry, burping it when needing a burp, soothing it when it cries, etc). You will be asked to check in with your Professor periodically on the status of your baby. By the end of the 3 month period you will be given a grade based upon how you treated your baby, the baby’s final physical state, and your overall effort in the assignment.
OOC Instructions
This long-term assignment will have 3 distinct phases that can be sequentially completed at any time. This means that you cannot move to phase 2 until you have completed phase 1. You cannot move to phase 3 until you have completed phase 2. For each phase a seperate thread will be made (ex. THIS thread is for PHASE 1). If you can’t jump in right when the thread opens, don’t fret! ALL threads will stay open until the final day of the assignment (March 26 2020).
For each phase of the assignment, you will simply have to post your character within the thread. I will post Finneas interacting with your character, which will in turn, be a short RP where he will ask questions or ask them to complete a simple task.
For the second and third phase, you will be required to provide 1 link to an outside RP in which the baby doll is mentioned, being taken care of, or used.
While I’m only requiring that you mention the doll in 2 RPs for the sake of the assignment, this could be such a fun opportunity if you’d like to take heed of it and use it for your own plotting purposes! Kid running his own babysitting business as a whole new way of paying a dude to do your homework? Bringing your child to class? Taking them on a casual stroll? HELP--I lost my child in the great lake! …… Lots of fun opportunities! If you can’t think of any come poke me and we can brainstorm together ^^
I will unlock the phase 2 & phase 3 threads once a few people have gone through phase 1 in order to stagger things. I’ll post notices on the noticeboard so you know when the threads have been opened!
To summarize: - You can complete this long-term assignment at your own pace, but each phase (1,2, &3) must be completed in sequential order. You cannot move to the next phase until completing the one before it.

Phoebe bopped over to grab their bag, pausing to poke through it out of curiosity. Merlin, what were they gonna do with all these things? Surely this fake baby didn't need real feedings and diaper changes? Surely...? With a small frown, Phoebe tucked the strap over her shoulder and headed back to find Bernie.

Who had decided this was a good idea? Alexandre was only 14. He was way too young to be a father. And there were people even younger than him. This was probably a bad idea actually. And they had to do it for three months? THREE WHOLE MONTHS? That was such a long time. How much would it really matter if he failed muggle studies anyway? These were the sorts of thoughts he was thinking as he walked slowly into the classroom.
"Um, hello professor. I'm here for...a baby." Was he supposed to pick or were they being assigned?

In the time since she'd arrived in class and found a partner, Isla discovered that her awkwardness about this whole situation was starting to fade. She was going to be a MOMMY! This was just like playing with baby dolls, except now she was nearly twelve years old and basically had 'the real thing' to play with! She was still volunteering Blake to change ALL the diapers, though! She'd feed the baby and rock it to sleep. Nope. What was she saying? She pretty much had to change some of those diapers, didn't she?
Spotting Blake claiming a diaper bag and slinging it over his shoulder, Isla gave her new 'husband' (*giggle*) a raised eyebrow expression. "Wow. Look at you being on a roll," she said. Good. GOOOOOD. This was going to be so much easier with her baby having a father that was willing to step in and help out! "I definitely want a little girl! Is that okay with you?" And names? She'd never thought about what she wanted to name her baby! She thought she still had a good ten years or so before that happened!
"Uhh...a name. Uhhh...," she mumbled. "I don't know. Do you have any ideas?" She was the to suggest they get a little girl, so maybe Blake wanted to chime on the whole name thing? "Olivia? Ava? Aurora? Ellie? Primrose?" She rattled off a few names off the top of her head.
Isla would pick a girl Blake thought. Girls ALWAYS stick together. Didn't men always want to have a boy first?? Maybe he should have suggested a boy ... and then Blake shook his head to clear his thoughts. Though this was like a real baby, it wasn't real..... they only had to keep it alive for a few months not that rest of his life, so what did it matter if it was a girl.
"A girls perfect." He said with a smile, it really didn't matter. He wasn't sure about names... Did it come with a birth certificate like an older student had suggested? .... So many questions, so many thoughts. "I like Ellie." He added at the suggestion of one of her names .. Primrose?? that's a big nope ....
"Ellie Bellchant-Ryan" yeah that's a got a good ring to it Blake thought. He thought it was a rather nice gesture to hyphen the last name rather than just say Ryan. "Well I guess it's time to sign the papers and officially become a family." He added, he grabbed a baby and moved toward Professor Schmoe.
"Professor Schmoe ... where do we sign?" He added holding the diaper bag over one shoulder and the baby on the other hip.... they were going to have to work on a 'shift' schedule as to who has her and when.

Kaiser hadn't even stepped inside the room yet, and he was already feeling immensely uncomfortable. These weren't real babies of course, and that was a very good thing, if you asked him; the only vaguely baby-shaped things he'd ever been near were the smallest Stemps, very occasionally, and even then he tried to given them a wide berth, as suited as he wasn't to be in the presence of such small humans. Even so... he felt like this was not the assignment for him. At all. It was tempting to ask for some kind of alternative, but trying to explain himself sounded exhausting so... he figured he'd put up with it rather than make a fuss. Hardly the end of the world.
Having been bracing himself all the way to the classroom, Kaiser stepped through the door, looking very much like he would prefer to be anywhere else. He was going to fail the assignment. He was going to fail it miserably, he already knew. Did he really need to take part in it to know that? Maybe he could quit a few days in; the result would be the same regardless.
Kaiser approached Schmoe, staring at him rather than the tables of fake babies. He was looking a little grey, but whether that was because of the assignment or because that was just how he looked these days was anyone's guess. Probably a bit of both.
"No partner," was all he said. No. He had no partner, and that was intentional. Nobody else needed to suffer this with him; it was only fair that he totally screw it up alone.

She had just smiled at the professor and went to pick a baby when one was being picked for her. She gave a puzzled look for a second before smiling at her best friend, 'Why yes Louie I think that would be a marvelous idea." Laughing as they used their summer fake names once more, it was fun to pretend to be someone different once in a while and she knew even with this project that the two of them would be having fun.
Walking with him back over to the professor she looked at them both. 'What do we have to fill out sir? I guess I found the father, he came along after all." Chloe giggled and looked towards Ewan, "What are we naming... ah.. " She looked at the doll.
"Do we have a boy or a girl?"
With a grin across his face, the tall Ravenclaw stretched his legs out in front of him for a moment as he looked around the classroom, taking in all of the different pairs of would be parents. Sure, parents of fake babies but still. It was kind of amusing because he had every confidence in the fact that some of these babies would not last. Although, truth be told, he wasn’t confident that he and Chloe Cookie could keep their baby around for all that long either.
Ewan followed as Chloe headed over to sign them both up and couldn’t help but laugh as she asked him what he wanted to call the baby. How should he know? He’d had a hard-enough time naming Kingsley and he was only a dog! “Uhhh…” hesitating now because the names that were popping in his head were honestly stupid. “How about we have a little baby girl? My Aunty is actually having a girl so it’ll be good practice for me” smiling a little now, happy that this was actually doubly useful.
“I don’t really mind the name. Why don’t you pick?”

Just as she said it her eyes went to the door as someone else had come in, Kaiser. She bit the inside of her lip hearing him say he was working alone, of course he was.
She shook her head to get back into what was going on and focused on Ewan, 'So names, what about Mila? Mila Anne?" She thought that was a pretty name. Looking down at the baby she smiled a little, this was going to be easy, her brother gave her all the experience. She was confident she could do fine and she hoped Ewan would be able to as well.
Looking to the professor she waited for the papers to sign and to see if the name worked of course.

Jillian heard about Professor Schmoe's homework and felt like she was up to the challenge of 'taking care of a baby'- err, fake baby, whatever. She thought about it long enough and even on the way here, she was still having some second thoughts but she was just as curious as everyone else. It was an interesting concept and she figured this was a good social experiment, not only for herself but of course to everyone else who will be joining in this assignment.
Fingers crossed.
When she managed to enter the classroom, she immediately headed towards the professor, spotting him on his desk with that smile of his. Of course upon approaching him, Jillian flashed him a smile as well. "Uhmmm…" she took a deep breath with her eyes sort of wandering at the fake babies on top of the tables. They look creepy honestly but it was too late to back out now. Besides this looks like it could be fun. "Hello, Professor" she returned her glance to him.
"I will be doing this assignment without a partner" she continued. She thought about it earlier and she wanted to do this alone by choice. She wanted to know how much agony a parent has to go through taking care of a baby. One she is sure her father experienced since her mother is no longer around.
Yep, sounds like something she can practice with... you know... in the future.

"Alright." Bernie had a good eye for picking out candy, so she'd probably be able to spot a good baby as well. She scanned the line for the cutest one, then scanned it again to make sure she wasn't just seeing 142 of the same baby doll because was it just her or were they all identical?. Finally, Bernie sighed, and selected a chubby plastic child with plastered on plastic hair and blue eyes.
It would do. "How do we tell if it's a boy or girl?" she asked, half speaking to the 'infant' and half to Phoebe. Bernie was currently holding it out at arm's length, as though she needed to see it do something before she would know what to name it. "I like the name Nigel, or maybe she or he needs something longer, like Fitzgerald or Rosamund, or even Cuthberta?" She turned so the baby doll was facing Phoebe. "Wot about Beebie?" It was like Bernie and Phoebe put together.
No, no, wait, she had the perfect name for the babe: "FINNEAS! We should call it Finneas." For no particular reason... Bernie was BEAMING at her partner with this idea. "Finnn-eeee-aaaas, Finnn-eeeee-aaaas!" Finneas James-Grantham. Brilliant.

Blake sure was taking a long time to consider her offer for a girl. In the end, it didn't matter one way or the other. She'd just have a lot more fun with her own little girl! She was hoping Blake would agree with her...
...which he did! Isla smiled at him and tried not to do a little bounce of excitement at the thought of meeting her very own daughter in a matter of minutes! Okay, so this was all fake, and technically she could just toss her daughter to the side and ignore her anytime she wanted to (right?), but it was going to feel real!
"Then it's settled! We're officially the parents of a little girl named Ellie Bellchant-Ryan!" she said. She smiled at her new husband as she started to take control of the situation and get things done. Although, she did feel kind of like a 'deadbeat mom'. Blake had the diaper bag and baby Ellie, and here Isla was just standing around letting him do all the work! He was supposed to be saving his energy for ALL the diaper changes he was going to do!
Nevertheless, she moved to stand beside Blake, ready to sign her life away to become Ellie's new mum!

Finneas hadn't worried about this assignment until this very moment, in all honesty. If Kodee Chosen was excited, that could only mean it was either a very good idea or an extremely terrible one. There was no inbetween. He was worried. He was ALWAYS worried. But especially now.
......... Er. Finneas laughed in the way one does when they are in a very uncomfortable position. "Err... I'll let you decide that with the help of Ms. Motts," because that felt..... just. As for the signing, however, Finneas DID have the answer to that one. So he pulled out the parchment, pushing it to the end of his desk, along with a PEN. "Fill out the blanks and sign at the end." Please?

Finneas was very pleased to see this level of cooperation. It was important for an assignment such as this one. "Excellent," he bobbed his head up and down, pushing the papers toward the end of his desk for them to fill out. "Just fill this out and we can finalize everything."

What made a good fake baby, anyway? Cecelia knew what made a good real baby. Finneas liked to watch as his students picked out their dolls. It was very evident that some were picking with utmost care, whilst other simply took the first they could find. Cecelia was one of the careful choosers. That was promising. Ho, ho, ho. "Just one more thing, Miss Summers," he held out the form so that she could sign off.

Hopefully Phoebe would be the sensible one in their partnership. Either way, Schmoe waited for the pair to make their decision, so that he could give them their paperwork momentarily. Oh Merlin, mistakes were made.

UGH this was one thing he did not like about school. His money was useless here. "Fiiiiine" he said and looked at the dolls on the table. They all looked the same to him. After her name was signed on the paper, she turned toward Blake...and froze. "Wait a minute? We don't do this together? I have to...take her off by myself sometimes?" she asked.
That made perfect sense, though. What was she thinking? There was no way she and Blake were going to spend every waking hour together, so they pretty much had to take shifts. "Right, I uhhh...okay, so how do you want to do this? Each of us taking a day at a time? A week at a time?" she asked. A week at a time might be a little insane. She wasn't even sure she wanted Ellie that much!
It seemed like they were waiting to see if there was anything else they could get, so the first year turned toward the professor and waited.

Jillian still smiling at Professor Schmoe and nodding at his instructions. "One moment then" her heels quickly turned as she walked around the classroom and tried to find herself a potential psuedo-baby with real life needs. It doesn't need that much investigation since all of these dolls look the same so she opted for the one next to her. She picked it up by the leg and looked at it- eye level. She made a face as she tried to inspect it. "What is this?" do muggle teens have to go through the same thing they are doing right now? Besides the point really, this little thing is a girl.
What would be a nice name for this baby? Perhaps something simple like a fruit--- yeah, she can definitely call her Apple or Strawberry... that is not funny at all. Or she could just name it something Korean since she is also one. Did Professor Schmoe told them to make a name? Not super sure. But oh well, just in case he does. She already thought of something.
Still holding the baby on the leg, she made her way back to the professor's desk and handed it towards him. "I'm getting this one, Professor Schmoe" cue in a smile.
Now for the paperwork.

Nodding Stella adjusted the bag on her left shoulder so she could start filling out the paperwork, shifting her weight slightly on her right she adjusted the baby light on her right. If she was going to act like a mother for three months she might as well start now. Taking the parchment with Oceanus's signature on it she took her wand and did a quick charm transferring the signature onto the form. Looking at Professor Schmoe she smiled at him. "Is there anything else that I need to do Professor?" she asked him curiously. Hearing Blake's question she bit her lip, it was a good question.

Their baby was SO cute, even with fake hair and a permanently cherubic expression. He... he? He definitely had her eyes, which was supposed to make her feel more fond of him. Mostly, she just wanted to poke the thing until she could figure out how it worked, and she wanted to take it apart to understand the magic.
That would get them a failing grade.
"Oh, Finneas Grantham-James, you are such a little muffin of a baby. Cute cute cute. Professor, we're ready to fill out our adoption paperwork and take our little baby home with us."

Noticing Chloe nearby, Kaiser made a brave attempt at a smile in her direction, but it might have ended up looking a little bit more like a grimace. After that, he maintained a straight face.
Which was surprisingly easy, considering he had Schmoe right in front of him, being... Schmoe. "Right."
Choosing the... doll... was not a painstaking operation. Kaiser simply picked out the first one his eye fell on, and returned to Schmoe, holding the thing between his arm and his chest, so it faced outwards. Bizarre. Could he not just explain that he was likely never having kids, and that this activity was entirely unnecessary for him?
He supposed not. It was more about learning how muggles did things, after all.
Before Schmoe could say anything else to him, Kaiser quickly intercepted. "Do we have to name them?" Because he??? did not want to. He didn't know why, exactly, other than that maybe he'd end up feeling more terrible if he messed the whole activity up. Mostly he just knew that he would rather not name it. Or personify it. Or anything.
Or do this assignment at all.

Earlier lessons aside, even with any hints that might have been there, the announcement of the topic for the Muggle Studies long-term assignment had come as a surprise to Carys. Mostly because, well, it had led to all sorts of complicated thoughts and concerns about exam studies in combination with taking care of a baby. Granted, it was a fake baby, but still. Even so, she hadn’t had it in her not to do the assignment.
Although, her sister had sort of taken her idea of doing it alone, which had limited her options since honestly, Carsyn had been one of the only people she’d thought about working with because…well, there was the possibility of questions otherwise and she hadn’t really wanted to ask him. She had, though, and Eron had agreed to work with her even if it would probably lead to all sorts of awkward situations. As in, parental questions or even professor questions as to if they understood what they were getting into.
Not that Carys had even thought about that. Not at all. The only real baby in the family was going to be her cousin’s. This was just a project and she’d chosen to work on it with her boyfriend just because it made sense. Sort of. Maybe.
“Hi, Professor Schmoe,” she said as she saw the professor waiting there amongst all the dolls and other students collecting them. “Do we get to choose the gender or is it a surprise?” Did the dolls even have a gender? Knowing things like that definitely helped when it came to coming up with a name, and she was guessing that was part of the assignment. Naming their babies, even if they weren’t real.
It was way easier naming her cat, by the way.

Being a Muggle-born, Jina had been hesitant before she eventually chose to study Muggle Studies. She thought the class would be boring, since she already knew everything about Muggles. But this long term assignment sounded fun! She was glad she took the subject after all. It would be an interesting experience, getting to take care of a (fake) baby. She knew that her biological mother was only 17 years old - the age Jina was at the moment - when she gave birth to her. She could now understand how scared her biological parents must have been to have a child at that age. She felt nervous just going to pick up a fake baby to take care of temporarily!
"Hi, Professor Schmoe." She greeted with a smile as she entered the classroom. "Do I just ... choose a baby?" Oh and there was a bag for the baby things. Cool!
The second year stepped into the Muggle Studies classroom and spotted Mr. Hair immediately. This meant she was right on the time they had agreed to. “Hi, Cole. Hello, Professor.’’ There was no smile, just the usual solemn Claudine even though she was pleased to an extent to see Schmoe. “Would this ‘baby’ have life-like movements?’’ Since they were able to do magic, she wouldn’t put it pst Schmoe to enchant the baby to make it seem real at times.

It also made Finneas wonder if there was anything going on between the two of them, not that it was his business but... Curious. He was that. "Pick out your little one and errrr grab a bag, we'll get to signing the papers afterwards."
Nora smiled, clueless about the curious and also doubting feelings around this situation. She was sure she wanted to do this assignment, considering she never had a sibling, and the babies she got to take care of were hospital ward babies that had just been born, back in the day (long story to tell).
"Alright. Thanks...I'll sign those." She replied as she searched through the bag and looked at the /babies/. The choice was to get a boy. The name was still floating somewhere...

Limited movements. Claudine considered this to be a good thing since it meant that the dolls weren’t magicked to doing things like much crying and wanting constant attention. Hopefully. She glanced up at Cole. He didn’t have a preference? “Boy,’’ the Snakette said, making the decision almost immediately. If she ever was going to have kids in the very distant future, she would want boys, too. They were less dramatic and much easier to get along with for the most part. “Do we just… take a bag?’’ she asked, eyeing all the supply bags. And the forms? The signing came next, right?

One second Mister Chosen," he hadn't forgotten the question about the certificate, there was just a lot going on. And Finneas had many things on his desk, it was starting to become a problem.
He reached over to a stack of papers, and then dipped his quill in some ink. He craned his neck to look down at the form that Kodee had just filled out and inked in the baby's name along with his and Mackenzie's. "Here is your certificate," a receipt of sorts. "And... That's it, yes. Have a good day."

Isla's question elicited a smile, but before Finneas could answer, it looked as if she came to the proper conclusion herself.
While the two chatted, Finneas pulled out a certificate and used their information to jot things down before holding it out to Isla. "Here is your certificate and errrrrr.... you're free to head out into the world with your child!"

That was.... one way to hold a baby, he supposed. Finneas was concerned about some of the others, but he had a good feeling about Kaiser. There was something in his strange noodly ribcage that told him that perhaps this would be good for both of them. The baby and the Kaiser. AnYwAy. "Yes," he nodded, extending his arm and holding the form out for the young Slytherin. There wasn't actually a reason to name aside from the fact that it would make this far less confusing for Finneas when grading. "Please sign."
