It's important to get to know employees all over the Ministry, not just those in your department. Who knows? Someday, you may find yourself stuck with a problem that requires the special skills of a friend you make today. Tucked between two giant potted ferns is a line of small tables with two chairs on each side. Take a seat at one of the tables and get to know the person who sits across from you - chit chat and asking about their experience at the Ministry (or otherwise) is ideal. Once the bell rings, it's time to move on to a new table and a new partner for chit-chatting.
At the end of the event, you'll know a handful of new people from all over the building, which is handy whether you're a new or returning employee. So what if it feels a little bit like speed dating?

No, no. This didn't feel like speed dating. It WAS speed dating.
For Eliora, anyway.
After splitting with Nate, mere weeks ago, actually.. She needed something to distract her, that wasn't the dirty nappies that Levi presented her every few hours. But sure, this was just where she was going to pick someone up. Or something. And at least learn their name.
After having five cups of coffee before leaving home earlier, she was HERE. Here, although she didn't want to be. Taking a seat, Eliora looked around hoping that someone would at least take a seat soon. A male. An attractive male.
... Should she have been looking for someone who had kids already? Was that what her life was now that she was a single mother of two?
No, no. This didn't feel like speed dating. It WAS speed dating.
For Eliora, anyway.

It wasn't that he didn't want to be here. Well, okay, truth be told it rather was. Which was maybe why he ended up at the orientation at all. Life lessons often taught that putting oneself in uncomfortable and unwanted situations could yield interesting results. Mind the notation of 'interesting', not 'good' and not 'bad'.
And interesting should have been his middle name.
So, Rhydian picked the most interesting thing to do. Which was, look for the table that had the conversation cards on it so he could edit them to what he viewed as more appropriate starters. There was some disappointment in finding that that table, or those tables, had been moved. And the cards? Well, they must not have appreciated his handi-work. They were all gone.
Instead, there was some form of speed-talking tables set up. Something which piqued his interest quite clearly. Especially when he caught sight of a person all on their lonesome. No one was going to take the seat across? They were all just gonna amble by and let the person sit awkwardly?
Well, invitation recognized, recieved, processed and accepted. Without any accord, introduction or further ado, Rhydian moved over to the vacant chair and deposited himself in it across from the woman. "What do you say happens, if no one shows up to this thing? Do we just switch sides of the table, or are we expected to talk to ourselves?"
Which, no one should misunderstand. He could fully and adequately do. It was just less entertaining for himself. For viewers, that might be a bit of a different story.

Under normal circumstances, her presence would be found at the buffet station where she could avoid all manner of people and keep her mouth full enough to avoid conversation. Unfortunately for her, the social epicentre of this years orientation appeared to be the buffet table and seating area. Such a shame.
Foregoing her meal for a drink instead, Emily took a seat at one of the small tables to the side that was best sheltered by a potted fern. There were only two others in her vicinity, and she was happy to ignore their existence and give them whatever privacy they desired. She had little interest in mingling at the minute, observation from afar suited her just fine.

After having been struck with the realization that she barely knew anybody she worked with, besides those she actually worked with on a daily basis, the speed dating friendship area had seemed like a logical place to go.
"Anybody sitting here?" She asked a woman seated across from an empty chair. Yes, it was clear that there was nobody sitting here but it was only polite to ask. Maybe the person she had been seated across had just gotten up for a moment but planned to return. Though that didn't seem likely, it seemed rude to just sit down without at least asking first. So Cassie just gave the woman a friendly smile and simply kept one hand resting on the back of the empty chair.
Lynley knew the importance of connections. And so, here the department head was, ready to...ah, make connections.
The brunette swept her hair back into a perfectly neat pony-tail, and she quickly took a seat at a table, tapping her foot impatiently for someone to come along and....swipe her up. Come on, people. Lynley Purcell here. A VERY IMPORTANT connection if you asked her, Hmph.

Simply for the sake of getting to know her Ministry co-workers, Marilyn firmly click!-clacked! her way across the Atrium's hard stone floor; dress swishing and eyes sharp as she entered the venue being used for orientation.
Naturally, she was the last to arrive; not for nothing, of course. Olivia had been in the states over the past week with her father, for a muggle Disney trip, and she'd just returned that afternoon. So, Marilyn had been spending much needed time with her daughter, whom she'd been a little lost without if she were being honest. Even if the small blonde was painfully Gryffindor at this point...AND it had been perfect timing since Liv wouldn't have forgiven her mother had she not been able to help her dress for an event. Fashion was something they did together, and as odd as it might've seemed, she valued her daughter's opinion. Olivia already had a sharp eye for it...and she was only ten. Marilyn had absurdly high hopes for her future.
Face schooled with her usual calculating look, she parked herself at one of the small tables without notecards, glancing around at other occupants as she adjusted her dress. Also, it definitely had a speed-dating feel, but that was ridiculous. She was NOT sat here for that reason...So, if anyone dared approach, they'd better only have platonic intentions in mind or she'd roast them.
Figuratively...or literally. It was dependent on the approach.

Galen Made his way across the room casually. He tried not to show it but he was a little overwhelmed, He hadn't expected his application to be approved so quickly, but here he was orientation day and he hadn't even found a place yet. He tucked the Real Estate section of the news paper under his arm as he spotted an empty seat across from a Blonde woman wearing a black and White dress. " Good Afternoon, Ma'am." he greeted politely. " Mind if I sit?"

There was something therapeutic about being on the outer, looking in on other peoples' interactions. It didn't occur to her that someone might honestly go along with this networking activity. She would opt for a plush lounge and drinks with conversation in a casual manner over this times fiasco they were calling a networking opportunity.
Sipping her drink, Emily continued to watch, only pulled from her thoughts when her table was approached. Honestly, she was probably lucky to have gone this long without being disturbed. "No, not at all," she replied cordially, gesturing that the woman could take it.
"Emily Browne, Magical Law Enforcement," she introduced herself, extending a hand for a shake. What were her chances of the woman simply wanting to sit with mutual disinterest? She figured it was slim, so it was time she put her Department Head hat on and participated.

Marilyn cracked a smile, offering her hand across the small table. "It's Marilyn." There was, of course, no hidden meanings behind this less-than-formal request, but she simply preferred to be on a first-name basis with her peers. That was all.
Crossing her legs, she settled her hands on the table between them. "I've not seen you around before...So, tell me about yourself."

Tala laughed as Lynley patted her arm in a slightly awkward manner, she knew the woman was intimidating to others, but the younger woman found her sort of funny.
"Sorry, sorry, I just- I'm so stoked to see you." One, because they were buddies kinda and Tala didn't have many of those at the Ministry as of yet, and two, because she'd gone through all that trouble with the portkey and Tala was still very thankful. She sat as she was bidden, sitting back and crossing her legs, looking more of the young lady she was. "How did you like the cake I baked you."

I recently was hired into the Law Enforcement Department. I was a bit surprised to hear back so quickly to be honest I thought I would have time to house hunt first." He admitted. Let's see oh I previously worked bank security in the United States.i was needing a bit of a change so I'm looking forward to working here."

At first, Charles thought he would be attending a short orientation briefing when he accidentally walked into this grand room. He did not realise however,that this was an event to get to know more staff through a process similar to 'speed dating'.Only when he made an inquiry from one of the staff members, realization dawned upon him. o.O whhhaaaat?!! He couldn't help express his shock! Believe him, he wanted to bolt through those doors and get out of here as fast as he could but they kept insisting that the event was about to start. No No!! He didn't want to be here and there was no bloody way he would sit in one of those chairs! But they blocked the door! Yes, they bloody did!! He pointed angrily towards them,"Youuu! Open that door! I wish to leave now! And you,don't just stand there! MOVE! You big pile of-"

Lynley just rolled her eyes again. Honestly, Taladona Jordan was like a teenager. Sometimes Lynley thought it was quite endearing; other times, she wanted to grab the girls' shoulders, shake her, and shout B E P R O F E S S I O N A L! However, right now, Lynley merely cocked an eyebrow and nodded. "I suppose I am....'stoked' to see you, too." Even though Lynley hardly showed except for the smirk she wore.

"It was very good. I like lemon...'twas nice." She said as she rocked one of her ankles back and forth in her seat, the one that was crossed over the other. "I didn't expect it--my brother thought it was very good--" she smirked.
Flashes of jewelry hardly went unnoticed by the department head, and this was no different--that ring--it caught Lynley's eye immediately. "Tala--Tala are you ENGAGED?"
Lynley would NEVER have guessed that Tala had .....a partner/person thing!

Humming a merry little tune, Delphine sashayed her way towards one of the tables over there. Did it make her happy to see people already connecting with one another? Oh YES. It meant that these people knew how important connections and networking was and just how much these events would help them in the future.
And yes, this DID feel like speed dating. Luckily the single mother of one was good at dating, eh?

The Senior Undersecretary pushed these thoughts out of her mind as she carefully took a seat on one of the empty tables. Her hands, which were laden with rings as usual, rested on the table as she looked around to see how the others were getting along. She was glad that there was talking going on because otherwise, if she had been sitting here in complete silence, she would have been severely uncomfortable with the whole situation. Silence was awkward and noise was preferred. Just saying.
So what was she meant to do now? Wait? What if no one came?

Eliora needed more coffee. Five cups hadn't been enough and she was sure she needed to have at least doubled her quota before getting here. Not so genius. But she was excited already to get home and make sure her children were still as adorable as they had been when she left. Which was very. Briar had been reading to Levi and Levi had been sucking on the arm of a teddy. Purposely genius. Of course, they had been carried and birthed by her.
"I'm sure we could find something to do with ourselves." She smiled, eye lifting from her nails to the male sitting opposite her. And then almost as if on cue, people began to arrive. "But I'm sure we could also find something to do with ourselves whilst people are around."

But then, there were other people. Rather, quite a lot of other people and all of a sudden it was a bit loud and noisy and Merlin! How was he supposed to listen to all the conversations around if there were so many?
Pity.
But then, not quite. The woman across from him got a curious eyebrow arch. Stand up? Well, no one had told him this was going to be an interactive type of conversation, but it was just fine with him. "Well, since you said please."
With a grin, and not questioning why or why not he should do such a thing, Rhydian got up. He even went so far as to stand on his chair and do a slight twirl about on the balls of his feet. When he was facing the woman again, he took off his hat and bowed a little. "For your entertainment, Miss. Supplied by the minds of the Ministry of Magic."
Merlin if he had brought his other shoes he might have even done a bit of a tap-dance. Just because, he could.
Why, the view was so much better from up here. Why didn't they make it interesting and all stand on their chairs to hold conversation? Likely because not everyone was comfortable at such heights.
Still, it did make him feel a bit better, and abruptly hopped down and sat down. His hat got placed in front of him. "Rhydian Blackhold." He stuck his hand out over his hat in greeting. "And you with such a curious idea of an introduction might be?"

Did she want to be professional? Totally, definitely, but it wasn't exactly easy for her, something in her nature just didn't allow for calm, polite discourse, when it came certain people, at least... And apparently one of those people was Lynley Purcell. She smiled, all teeth and warmth, a lanky sunspot. "it's hilarious hearing you say that word." Tala said, giggling a little.
"I'm so glad, I didn't know if it would be good, I never made a lemon iced cake before." It had been surprisingly easy, but the funny thing was that the simpler the recipe, the easier it was to get wrong. Huh, that sounded kinda like a metaphor.
The surprise was, well, surprising. "Oh, yeah, it happened a few months back." Tala said, laughing a little at Lynley's exclamation, she couldn't fault the older woman, the fact still surprised herself, after all. "Lucas- my fiancé, he proposed to me.. in.... Dude, I think it was September." It didn't feel like it had been four months at all.

She seemed to have distracted the woman. But from doing what? Simply people watching? It was what Cassie had spent a better part of the morning doing. Not that she was opposed to talking to people, but sometimes it was interesting to just sit back and watch the rush, and the interactions of other people.
But this woman would not have chosen that spot to sit had she not been expecting someone to join her. So Cassie took the empty seat and shook the hand offered toward her. Oh yes, Emily Browne, she did recognize that name, even if she hadn't before been able to put it to a face.
"Cassandra White, Magical Cooperation. But you can call me Cassie." What was the woman drinking, she wondered. Cassie had finished her own coffee some time ago, but she was considering going back for a second cup soon. "You're the Head of law enforcement, right?"

"Cassie," she acknowledged the nickname, "it's a pleasure to meet you. What do you do in IMC if you don't mind me asking?" Ever the conversationalist she was, and as dreadfully dull and cliche as this networking thing seemed to be, it did have an element of practicality, IMC was a department they often rubbed shoulders with.
What she hadn't expected was to be recognised for her position. "Quite correct," she replied, smirking slightly in amusement, "returning after conducting some business abroad."

"I'm an immigration officer and a liason to the press. Have been for...three years now. This will be my fourth." She'd had to think about that for a moment. Was this really the start of year four already? Time certainly had flown by. It was crazy. "How long have you worked at the ministry?"
Yes, Cassie had thought so. She was pretty sure that she would recognize the names of each of the department heads, even if she hadn't personally met most of them. "Oh? What sort of business, if you don't mind me asking?"

His wife had forbidden the plaid for today. Technically, Sherman could have still weaseled in the checkerboard patterns, as Lucia had been otherwise preoccupied and wasn't able to attend the event with him. Of course, that meant the Minister could not be prohibited from SPEED-DATING.
Hehe. That was totally what it was.
Every table he approached seemed to be taken with two partners, so Sherman rolled his wheelchair up to an empty table, moving a seat out of the way to make room for himself. Hopefully, someone would show up to speak with him before the next bell rang?
