Middle Floors The central floors of the castle contain several classrooms, the headmaster's office, and numerous nooks and crannies to explore. Be careful around the portraits, they are not known to be the best at keeping gossip to a minimum.

Default Portraits

The walls in the first-floor corridor are covered in tapestries and, hung over them, are portraits of numerous witches and wizards. Whether you are trying to get to class or are just browsing around, the portraits here will try to start up a conversation with you. If you manage to get on their good side, they'll be willing to reveal secret passageways, share the latest school gossip, and more.

If you have time to spare, definitely go on a brief tangent from whatever it is you are doing. Google Stump is your man to go to if you're looking for answers about the mysteries of the castle; Beaumont Marjoribanks can tell you everything there is to know about gillyweed; and Elizabeth Burke ... well, it would be best to just avoid her for reasons that will be obvious should you strike up a discussion with her about magical blood status. There are other portraits here as well, each with their own unique personalities, and figures from other portraits happen to invade their frames from time to time.

OOC: Please do not role-play for the Portraits.

The number of Wilds left at Hogwarts was slowly dwindling, and Simone had found herself thinking about what it might be like when she was the only one left. Granted, there were still two others to leave before then, but that didn’t matter. Soon enough she’d be the only one, and she couldn’t deny she’d thought about asking Astrid about what they could do when that happened. Her dormmate would most definitely have ideas, and not just because she was a Grimaldi and Simone knew by now that they were always involved in any plans that happened.

But first, she’d found herself in the first-floor corridor, just on a random turn after leaving the latest lesson, her curly blonde hair scooped up into a pile on top of her head, humming the latest wrock song she’d heard on the radio.

Beauden had been making his way down the first-floor corridor, a battered copy of Self-Defensive Spellwork tucked under one arm, when he caught sight of Simone. His little sister was making her way down the hall, looking entirely carefree, her hair piled up like she hadn't a worry in the world. Her humming drifted toward him, the familiar melody of a wrock tune he immediately recognised. Typical Simone—effortlessly unbothered and always managing to nick his favourite songs. He wasn't sure whether to be annoyed she was poaching his music preferences or quietly proud that she had good taste.

"Oi, Sisi," he called, a lopsided grin on his face as he approached. "You planning to start a corridor concert, or is this just a preview?"

He stopped a few feet away, shifting the book under his arm as he casually leaned against the wall. His blue-green eyes darted briefly to the surrounding portraits, many of which were casting curious glances their way. "Word of advice: some of the portraits around here don't exactly appreciate live performances." He smirked. "Just speaking from experience. Had a run-in with some cranky bloke from the 17th century once—claimed I was 'disrupting the dignity of the castle.'"

Beauden's grin widened as he gestured vaguely down the hall. "But Elizabeth Burke simply adores a good tune. She is usually lurking somewhere around here."

Diamond strolled into the first-floor corridor, her eyes quickly flicking to the familiar portraits that lined the walls. As always, she couldn’t help but give the tapestries a half-hearted glance as she strut and wonder when these tacky things would be taken down for something more...modern. She was no stranger to this part of the castle, duh, and oftentimes when she was skipping lessons she was wandering around here to see which of the portraits was feeling particularly chatty - like she was right now. Thus far, no one was particularly springing to life and Diamond sighed heavily as she pulled out her compact to check her make-up. Not her usual color palette but such was the life when you had sponsors to appease - but did it really have to be this shimmer centric? Enchanting Elegance, a magical cosmetic palette with shimmering, color-changing shadows and blushes that adjust to your mood and surroundings. Each shade is enchanted to bring out your natural glow, whether you're in the middle of a high-stakes duel or preparing for a night at the Yule Ball.

Gag her now, PLEASE.

She wasn't one for subtlety, and this palette was entirely little too soft for her taste. Sleek? Sure. It could do to be a little more dramatic, but fine. T gold shimmer, its sparkle practically blinding in the palette, was bold and flashy just like she liked it - none of the 'softly glowing peach' nonsense. The whole 'barely there' look was so 2110 and ancient. The bolder shades, like the deep purple with silver flecks and the electric blue with that punchy glitter finish, were worthy enough to blend together but, eh, Diamond wasn't too convinced this deserved to be on the shelves as is.

"Barely worth the knuts to cover the ink," she muttered, snapping the lid shut with a sharp flick of her wrist before tucking the palette into her robe's pocket. She turned her gaze to the portraits around her, who were offering about as much excitement as watching broom polish dry.

"Honestly," she sighed, planting her hands on her hips as she tapped her foot in impatience, glaring at a frame that was, for all intents and purposes, a tragic still life. The figures inside hadn’t even bothered to show up - so utterly disappointing. "Their fault entirely," she scoffed. "Wasting my precious free period on this dullness. Really, the least they could do is be interesting."

Had there been the slightest bit of an eyeroll as soon as Simone had heard her older brother call out to her? It was very likely, and yet she also hadn’t cared if he’d seen it. By now he ought to be used to the reactions, and she wasn’t apologetic by any means as she’d fully turned his way.

“I’d think it would be more likely you would be the one putting on a corridor concert”, she responded, leaning against the wall next to him. With a portrait between them not hiding any curiosity as to their conversation whatsoever, earning a bit of an arch look from the thirteen-year-old snake. The warning from her brother was both acknowledged and summarily ignored, considering that hadn’t been her intent at all. Her interest in music was purely as an audience member. As the one listening to it and enjoying it without needing approval from her brother. Nor was she particularly nor intentionally nicking his music preferences. It was his own fault if he thought she was. “Not surprised one bit”, she said idly, even as she glanced down the corridor the direction he had gestured.

“I’d rather not.” He wasn’t going to trick her. Especially when she wasn’t about to fall for it. Or listen to whatever complaints Elizabeth Burke was choosing to voice today.

Beauden smirked at the eyeroll—it was classic Simone, and he wouldn't have it any other way. Her sharp wit and tendency to keep him on his toes had always been one of the things he secretly admired about her. Though, of course, he'd never admit that out loud.

"Me? A corridor concert?" He tapped the cover of Self-Defensive Spellwork with a mock-serious expression. "I think you're confusing me with someone who has time for theatrics. You know, some of us have important studies to focus on." He let the sarcasm hang in the air for a moment before flashing her a grin that made it clear he was absolutely not taking himself seriously.

Simone's disinterest in engaging with Elizabeth Burke was clearly written all over her face, and Beauden let out a mock-sigh, holding up his arms in mock surrender. "Alright, fine, she doesn't like being sung to. Honestly, the woman doesn't like much of anything. But don't say I didn't try to bring some fun to your day. There's nothing quite as enjoyable as making her face turn redder than her hair."

After a lingering moment of silence, he carried on. "Take it you just got out of a lesson?"

There was something about portraits that lined the walls of magical dwellings that could be equal parts unnerving and comforting. Unnerving, because hearing murmurings from the walls was not exactly conducive to filling a person with a sense of general wellbeing. Comforting, because it reminded him of home. His first home, that was, as unpredictable and transient as it had been. They had had portraits there too. Even that was not especially comforting, only in a nostalgic way, as reflecting on those days also did not inspire a sense of wellbeing. Especially this last week or so.

Usually Yves tried his best to tune out the portraits whenever he passed them, though when his route took him down this particular corridor that was nigh on impossible. He was, therefore, resigned to listening to their mumblings and being dragged on a reluctant jaunt down memory lane.

But perhaps not for too long. Diamond Marchbanks' initial muttering had slipped under his radar, as any mutterings in this corridor was likely to do, but as Yves neared the corner - or perhaps it was that the girl's voice became slightly bolder, or perhaps both - her words broke through his haze.

Turning the corner, Yves found himself looking upon the Gryffindor speaker. "I could try to be interesting," he said, in reference to her last comment. He assumed (correctly, though of course he didn't yet know that) that it was in reference to the portraits. "If you would be interested in that." He smiled.

He assumed (correctly, though of course he didn't yet know that) that it was in reference to the portraits. "If you would be interested in that." He smiled.

Diamond’s frustration was palpable as she stood there in the corridor, her hands planted firmly on her hips, staring down the motionless portrait before her as if it had personally offended her - which it HAD in being as a room full of gillyweed enthusiasts at a silent retreat. She could feel her energy waning in the face of such stagnation, LITERALLY dulling her natural shine.

Diamond didn’t even flinch when she heard the voice. She’d been so lost in her own world of frustration that the sudden interruption was a welcomed change of pace over any sort of inconvenience. She turned, clicked her tongue while narrowing her eyes as she took in the boy standing there, a faint smile on his lips. Okay, so he wasn’t bad looking - dangerously attractive, even - but that wasn’t what caught her attention. She wasn't exactly the type to be charmed by a smile or a decent-ish-looking face. She'd seen enough of both to be indifferent to them. No, it was the audacity. She liked audacity, when it suited her, and she knew guy had it in spades.

She raised an eyebrow, sizing him up in the moment. "Go on then," she prodded. "You’ve got the floor. Impress me."

Her tone was flippant, as if she were calling his bluff, though underneath it was a genuine challenge and almost plea - though Diamond was no beggar. She leaned back slightly, looking him over again, giving him a long, appraising stare.

She didn't like to be kept waiting, for the record.
