Moving Staircases

The most logical way for you to get from one part of the castle to the next, from down to the dungeons all the way up to the seventh floor, is making use of the staircases. Even though using them is logical, that does not mean it is going to provide the easiest route from Point A to Point B. The staircases in this tower are notorious for moving without warning whether you are walking on them or not. Hopefully luck is on your side today.

Covering the walls from the bottom of the tower to the top are hundreds of portraits. While they may be intriguing, it is important that you stay focused on the task at hand: getting from one flight of stairs to the next. If you're not paying attention, the staircase you are on will move and you'll have to maneuver your way back down or up again or wind up sinking through one of the trick steps. Under no circumstances should you be sliding down the banisters -- doing so will put your life at risk and, if you live to tell the tale, cost you two week's worth of detention.

He had homework to do. Wait. Rephrase. He had a lot of homework to do which could only mean one thing. Procrastinating like his entire existence depended on it. Later, when he’d run out of things to do—and only then—would he return to his common room and crack open his Herbology textbook. By then, he hoped he would be tired enough to fall asleep over it.

For now, Kodee stood closer to the top of the moving staircases, half his person leaning over the railing to get a good look at down below. He would have to time it right.

Ensuring there was no one below was secondary and made no real difference to the 7th Year. Beside him said a bucket loaded with balls of varying colours and sizes. If one were to pick them up, one would realise that they contained a substance inside. What that substance was, he would not say because why ruin the surprise?

Rather than toss them over the side, the boy had other ideas in mind.

Phoebe was enjoying riding the moving staircases. It was a bit of a game, wait until the staircases NEARLY lined up and then jump, or wait until it started moving again and take off. Either way, she liked to bridge the gap and pretend she was defying death. In reality, she probably couldn't get hurt either way, but she liked to pretend.

And then she spotted the Seventh Year of Dumbness on one of the connecting staircases, and she hopped off hers and onto his. Peered into his bucket. Measured him up. Decided not to push him while he was hanging over the railing like that. But it was a HARD decision.

"Hi! Want to play catch?" She grinned hugely.

He'd seen her coming. Heard her coming, too, but Kodee wasn't initially inclined to divert his attention from where it currently lay. In his mind, Phoebe would keep walking along her way as she was wont to do when she wasn't finding adorable ways to insult him. Must have been hard having a crush on someone so cool, but he'd make it easy for her.

He'd keep doing what he was doing.

Except, that was harder to do when she'd gone and walked up to him like that. Bold. Most girls her age avoided the cute guy they were dying for. Must be a Gryffindor thing. Had to be. Kodee eased off the railing and turned to look at her, his head tilted as he considered her suggestion.

Catch?

"Sure we could, if you had a ball or something you didn't mind breaking." The bucket full of balls sitting right by his feet? They....were....not....necessarily.......for catching.

Ahem.

He had a weird face. Did he know that? Like there was literally nothing his face could do that would look sincere to her. That made it weird. Phoebe squatted down beside the bucket of balls and dropped her chin into her palm, considering all the balls he had available. All those there and he wanted her to bring her own ball.

"Kodee, I think I can find a ball somewhere in this pail. What do you think? Can't I have one of these?" She poked one very tender finger toward the balls, but she wasn't foolish enough to touch them without his permission. They smelled funny.

Grey eyes fell to the bucket and the second year now squatting by the bucket. Somehow, he’d been hoping she hadn’t meant to use those for her game of catch. Half of him wanted to say yes, to tell her they’d play extreme catch and she could run from platform to platform trying to nab them while he watched the absolute shock appear when one exploded into bright lights upon impact. The other half wanted do the same thing but thought to tell her first so she wouldn’t have a sudden heart attack or hurt herself.

“They’re for fireworks. The moment they hit something, they’ll burst out.” There, explanation/disclaimer given. He was now in the right. “Might be neat to see if you can catch ‘em before they pop—or when they pop. What d’you say?”

It could be like....”Extreme catch—I know what’s better than extreme catch.” Without explanation, Kodee levitated half the balls from the bucket and toward her. “How good are you at the hurling spell? Levitation? Can you throw good?” Because dodging these bad boys on the moving staircases could be even more interesting.

"I'm... not good at magic, but I can throw really well," Phoebe muttered, giving one of the balls a very very tiny poke. Fireworks? He'd managed to put fireworks into this little ball? She had to giving him some grudging admiration for that, since she couldn't even do a hairbrushing charm on a good day.

And no days were good right now.

"Give me half, and I'll run and duck and throw some at you. Or we could plant them under the chair cushions at the staff table in the Great Hall. Exploding bums for everyone!"

“You’re an absolute GENIUS.” Kodee knew genius when he saw it. He knew good ideas when he saw them. This, this was both. Quick as that, Kodee grabbed the balls back and gingerly put them into the bucket before grabbing the bucket with one hand and the girl’s wrist with the other. “Come on, there’s still time before lunch. Phoebe! Ugh!” The future of Hogwarts was safe with kiddos like her coming up. He could graduate in peace now.

The 7th Year could also sprint, and so he did not really waiting for the girl to agree or disagree. Down the stairs, two or so at the time.

They could set several. Then, they could wait for others to pour in from the safety of Gryffindor table. It would be EPIC. Fireworks for everyone. Sparkly trousers and bright lights.

Could anyone ask for a more entertaining lunch? They would be asking for too much.

The fact that Kodee liked her idea and was just RUNNING with it, with all the enthusiasm that she could ask for, endeared him to her completely. All grumpiness and salty feelings were COMPLETELY discarded, and Kodee Chosen was well on his way to being her favorite person. Over Kaiser and Nettie, almost approaching Eiji.

In the Great Hall, Phoebe grabbed up two handfuls of the finicky little fireworks balls and headed for the chairs on the dias. Should she have worn gloves? If the evidence exploded, surely no one would be able to track them back to her. To them. Team Kodee-and-Phoebe.

One under Transfiguration. TWO under Potions. One under Muggle Studies. And one under a goblet, because why not?
