In the Hogwarts RPG, members have traditionally been limited in how many student characters they could actively play within the school setting. Over time, that structure has evolved to allow for more creativity and flexibility, while still maintaining a manageable framework for lessons and house-based activities.
Since Term 69, all SnitchSeeker members were eligible to play up to five sorted (postbit) student characters in the Hogwarts RPG. Effective Term 73, all SnitchSeeker members are permitted to play as many student characters in the Hogwarts RPG forum as desired ― the caveat being that only those five sorted postbit student characters may be posted in lessons.
These sorted characters represent your primary school participants — the students who attend lessons and are reflected in your postbit. For ease of reference, they may still be considered your primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary, and quinary characters.
Your primary character will continue to determine your username colour (unless overridden by another usergroup), with additional sorted houses displayed alongside in your postbit. At this time, only one character's points will be reflected on the Top Students leaderboard, though all sorted characters contribute to their respective houses.
As characters in the RPG, your student characters are equal in importance — this structure simply helps organize participation.
Updated Participation Guidelines:
Lessons & House Points:
Only your sorted (postbit) characters may attend lessons. This helps keep lessons manageable for staff and ensures clarity when awarding points. While only these sorted characters can earn house points through lessons, any character may earn house points.
It is not possible to award points to multiple houses for one member, only for the primary house. This is how staff member's student characters have their points added, and how points are given to and taken from houses as a whole.
Flexible Roleplay:
Outside of lessons and point-based activities, you are not limited to your sorted characters. Members are welcome to create and RP additional student-aged characters in the Hogwarts RPG forum, including common rooms, feasts, and other special events. These additional characters are also allowed to become members of their House's quidditch and gobstones teams, but priority may be given to postbit characters in the event of limited positions.
One Character per Lesson:
Members may role-play only one character per lesson. You may choose which of your sorted characters to use, but please clearly indicate which character you are posting. The preferred method of doing so is titling at least your first post in any lesson.
Common Rooms:
Access to common rooms will not be tied to your sorted houses. Please ensure your characters are posted in the appropriate house spaces. You may not post characters from different houses in other common rooms.
Character Distribution:
You may place your sorted characters in the same house or across multiple houses. While spreading them out is encouraged for broader interaction, it is not required. The same applies for any additional characters you choose to bring to the RPG.
Clarity in Posting:
If you are role-playing multiple characters within the same thread, please make sure they are clearly distinguishable (by name, formatting, or other means). Ensure they each have a bio posted in the Professor and Student Files for quick reference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quote:
Wait...so I can create more than five student characters?
Yes! You may create and RP as many student-aged characters as you like. The five-character limit applies only to sorted (postbit) characters who participate in lessons. Any of these addition characters must also follow the rules and guidelines in place regarding characters with special abilities.
You are also invited to post any bios for these additional non-postbit characters in the Professor and Student Files thread found in the SSRPG Resources forum, as well as the bio threads found in each common room.
Quote:
Do all my characters need to be Sorted through the Sorting Quiz?
No. Only your postbit characters are required to follow this process. Additional characters may participate freely in open RP spaces without being Sorted.
Quote:
Can unsorted characters attend lessons?
No. Only sorted (postbit) characters may participate in lessons. Any character may earn house points through RPing, should a professor deem their actions worthy of them.
Quote:
Where can unsorted characters participate?
Unsorted characters are welcome in all non-lesson threads, including social events, common areas, Hogsmeade, and other open Hogwarts RP spaces.
Quote:
Can I have multiple sorted characters in the same house?
Yes. You are welcome to have multiple characters sorted into the same house.
Quote:
Can I switch which characters are in my postbit?
No. Not without filling out the Sorting Quiz.
Quote:
Do unsorted characters count toward activity requirements (e.g., re-sorting)?
No. Only participation from Sorted characters will count toward those requirements.

Text Cut: previous information
In the Hogwarts RPG, members have always been allowed one Hogwarts character to role-play in the school, and have listed in their postbit. Several terms ago, the rules were changed to allow for school staff to play one student character as well as their professor. In Term 60, all SnitchSeeker members became eligible to play two characters in the Hogwarts RPG. Effective from Term 69, all SnitchSeeker members are eligible to play up to five sorted characters in the Hogwarts RPG. One condition: they must be sorted before you can play them.
These will be referred to as 'primary', 'secondary', 'tertiary', 'quaternary', and 'quinary' characters to make it easier to differentiate. The main differences between the two are: your primary character's house will determine your username colour (unless you are in another usergroup which overrides this), your primary character's house banner will also be on the left in your postbit, with the additional houses (secondary, tertiary, etc.) will be added to the right side by side. Currently, only the house points from your primary character will show in the Top Students leaderboard.
As characters in the RPG, your student characters will be equal.
In the Hogwarts RPG:
Members may role-play only one character in lessons. You can decide which of your characters to play in each lesson - it doesn't have to be your primary character, and it doesn't have to be the same character in every lesson. You must specify which of your characters you are posting (mentioning them clearly by name will suffice). Anywhere else, you may role-play either or both students (though be sure to differentiate between the two using names and different fonts/font colours).
Staying limited to one character per member per lesson makes things easier on staff in replying to their lessons and awarding points afterwards.
Points for the 'secondary' character will not be awarded to the member, but to the house as a whole (to see these points, view the 'Top Students' page while logged out).
It is not possible to award points to multiple houses for one member, only for the primary house. This is how staff member's student characters have their points added, and how points are given to and taken from houses as a whole.
Members will have access to the common rooms of the houses they are sorted into. Though this means you will technically be able to post your additional character in the house of your primary character, please do not do this. Any posts of students in the wrong common rooms will be deleted.
Your characters can all be in the same house, and in the same year, if you would like, but you are encouraged to spread things around for more opportunities for in-character interactions.
You will be able to add the house information under the characters' names in your profiles. Be sure to do this to make it clear which of your characters is in which house. We will reference the house banners in your site to ensure the correct house information has been added.
If you have any questions about the introduction of additional characters, feel free to ask them here, or to send a PM directly to the SSRPG Admins (Charely Potter, sweetpinkpixie) if you are more comfortable doing so. We are trialling this out to see how it best works and iron out any potential issues, and greatly appreciate your patience and cooperation. More information on how to be sorted or resorted into your secondary house will be available in the Sorting site notice.
