Default Lower Level Lifts

*click for live version*

It’s true, the rattle and clang of the lift as it goes frontways, backways, sideways, and the good old fashioned up and down may be annoying. It may make you grind your teeth in a way that will make your dentist recommend you wear a retainer at night healer recommend Skele-Gro to fix them. At least you have those spirited elevator music renditions of show tunes playing in the background as you travel about the Ministry to keep you company? And at least the lifts have been restored, under the guidance of Simone Krafft.

Those with honorable blood status traveling though the Ministry of Magic via the lifts or stairwells have now found themselves somewhere in the midst of the lower levels. Choose a number--seven, eight, or nine, and you'll be dropped off on the level of your choice!

The lifts, however, will only carry you down to level nine. The only access to level ten is via a stairwell coming from the corridor on level nine. If that's what you're looking for, though, you'll find it here.

While the lifts look just about the same as any day, the next employees to take a ride will be in for a bit of a surprise. Just when you think the lift is taking you to your level, the machine stops for a moment... and then proceeds to go in the opposite direction.

Want to go to level four? Well, you're going to level six instead. Meant to end up in the Atrium? Not today! Level one for you!

Adam was still fuming from this fight with Laurel. He was tired. He was cranky. His finger was still smarting – was that blood dripping from his finger? All he wanted to do was sit down in the food court, write out his damn letter to Zita, and drop it off at the owl post on his way home.

The doors to the lift dinged open and – red and white support can tapping the edges to make sure the doors had opened all the way (he’d learned that the hard way a few years ago when he’d had a lift close on him). ”Atrium” he called out to whatever spirits ran the stupid lifts. He hated the lifts. If he hadn’t been worried about slipping on a feather or poop or an owl pellet he’d have taken the stairs, but he didn’t trust himself not break his neck. Not with how exhausted his eyes felt after his all nighter. And not the way his day was going.

After spending the last few days back home with her mother, Delyth was…tired. You’d have thought that being home would have been nice and relaxing but no. Constant nagging had greeted Delyth when she walked through the door “Why haven’t you settled down yet dear?” and “You’re biological time clock is ticking hun, why don’t you find a nice man?”. All in all, it was draining. Mentally draining so coming back to work today, Delyth felt (and most likely looked) tired.

This may have explained why the frizzy blonde had just managed to catch the lift before it left, her hand jutting in between the doors as they closed, the doors opening again as they sensed something in between them. “Sorry…” she muttered to the man in the lift, adjusting her black mini-skirt and white blouse briefly before pushing the button for the food court. She’d been in such a rush to get into work this morning that she’d skipped breakfast, so stopping off to grab something to eat was a must before she started her work. After all, with the school year coming to a close, more and more applications were coming in for next year’s children.

Taking a deep breath as the doors closed, her eyes moved from her feet to…the patch of fresh blood on the floor? “Umm…excuse me, is that your blood dripping on the floor?” her eyes now meeting the face of the gentleman for the first time; his expression contorted into one annoyance and anger. “Are you okay?” she asked tentatively, unsure if that was the smartest question to ask. She didn’t want to pry but, well, it was in her nature to care for people and well, it’s not everyday you meet a stranger who in a lift who’s bleeding. Helping was the natural thing to do, right?

The doors were almost closed and then suddenly they popped back open. Amidst the noise of the lift’s doors, Adam thought he heard a muttered sorry. He shrugged in response. He wasn’t in a hurry. Although not being a hurry was what caused him to be in such a foul mood. Stupid Laurel and her stupid snarky mood swings. The doors closed. Adam took a deep breath, smelling something feminine, shampoo or soap or perfume maybe. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. He needed caffeine if he was going to make it to the owl post.

”Vat?” he asked as he shook his hurt and bleeding finger. He brought the injured digit up close to his very bright blue eyes to peer at it. It was barely visible to him even held a few inches from his face. He groaned slightly. Indeed, he was bleeding. He really needed to take another dose of his vision potion or go to bed. A curse followed in German as he tucked his red and white support cane into the crook of his armpit and dug into a pocket looking for a napkin. ”Danke.” He really wished he was good at healing spells. ”Owl got me.”

They road in silence for a moment and then, just as the elevator jerked, changing direction. Inevitably came the follow up question. Was he alright? AH! That was a loaded question. ”Not really no.” He reached out with his good hand to steady himself due to the elevator’s trajectory change. His cane tumbled to the floor. ”Verdammt,“ he cursed again. ”Chust great...” What else could go wrong?

Another day, another to-do list of things to accomplish around the Ministry! It was a good thing you have the lifts to carry you from place to place, making your travel times within the Ministry walls much faster than if you were to go by foot.

As you approach the lift and press the button to send the lift to the doors you stand before, the button doesn't light up. If you happen to try it again and again, it still doesn't light up. And even if you wait around for a few minutes to see if the lift appears, it... does not.

The lift seems to be quite broken, doesn't it? I suppose that to-do list is going to take a bit longer today, isn't it?

Oh, and if you happen to be IN one of the lifts while it suddenly stops working... Well, good luck getting out.

The accent. That was the first thing that popped into the blonde’s mind as she stared back at the hurt wizard in front of her now, torn between amusement and genuine concern. Biting her lower lip to stop the giggle that was threatening to escape, she replied “Owls can be quite pesky if you’re not careful. That’s why I keep a cat” Well, she was a half Kneazle actually but she wasn’t one to get bogged down on the small titbits of detail. Pulling a handkerchief out of her pocket, she out the blue and pink floral handkerchief to the gentleman, just in case the bleeding didn’t stop “You can keep this, just in case the bleeding doesn’t stop” Sure, it would be easier and quicker to use a spell but a simple thought like this does not often pop into the head of the youngest of only daughter of Amélie Roberts.

Delyth watched the man from the corner of her eye as they rode in silence for a moment. He seemed to be taking his time to ponder her simple question and it was rather…intriguing. She didn’t have time to answer however as the elevator gave a large jerk, causing the rather clumsy blonde to tumble to the ground unceremoniously. “Ow…” Delyth squeaked as something, or someone fell on top of her. “Why is it always me?!” she thought as she tried to untangle herself from the stranger. First, the cane from her side. Then his knee from her stomach. What a massive kerfuffle and it was only the beginning of her day. How could it possibly get any worse?

It wasn't an uncommon thing for the Auror to be down in the lower levels of the Ministry. In fact, the man was a frequent visitor of the food court in the Atrium. Today, however, Frankie was departing one of the courtrooms down in Level Ten. Important business was important. Now that was all over, he was ready to climb up the stairwell, hop on the lift, and head back to Level Two -- either to work out or maybe, just maybe, take a quick cat nap at his desk.

If he could even get there. Why was this damn lift not working?

For what had to have been the millionth time, the blond pressed the button of the lift that was on Level Nine. Clear signs of frustration were apparent on his face, and some rather choice words were being muttered under his breath. It was only a matter of time before the Gryffindor in him was fully unleashed.

Cats? Was she talking about cats? He blinked at her owlishly for a moment as if trying to figure out her words. English was, after all, his second language. After a moment, he did take the handkerchief and wrapped it around his finger. ”Danke.” Personally? Adam didn’t own any pets. Nope it was just him and his fanged Geranium plant in his small flat.

He had just about been ready to reach down the for the cane when the lift shifted again and the girl fell into him. He reached out, extending a hand to help her up while he kept hold of the lift’s handle. Wouldn’t do if they both tumbled to the ground. He also didn’t any more bruises if he was going to see Zita soon. He didn’t want to hear her go on about him working at the ministry. She might think the place was trying to kill him, but ever since Laurel had told him she hadn’t seen that in his future, he felt inclined to believe Laurel. She did, after all, have the sight. ”Okay zere? Did you break anyzing?” He really hoped that she hadn’t broken his support cane. Or anything else, because he was no good at medi-spells.

The lift suddenly stopped. The doors opened and maybe it was Adam's bad eyesight, but it looked like they were still on the lower level lobby. Hadn't this been where he had entered the lift?

With a rather unenthusiastic sigh, Delyth pulled herself to her feet, a little shaken if she was being honest. Sure, she wasn’t exactly small at 5ft6 but she wasn’t large either and well, the fall had taken her by surprise. Blinking the spots from her vision momentarily, replied “I don’t think so. Just my pride. It’s in pieces” she groaned as one hand ran through her curls, checking for any bumps and lumps. Thankfully, there was nothing but the headache that was slowly becoming a problem. What would her mother say when she told her this story? Either laugh or frown. There was no in between.

With the lift doors opening suddenly, Delyth corrected her dress for a second time and went to leave, assuming they were on the right floor and froze, turning on the spot to find they hadn’t even changed floors! “Hmph… Why does nothing in this place work?!” Turning back, Delyth stormed into the elevator, cried out “Atrium” and stood there with her arms crossed, not at all amused. Sure, it was like watching a toddler have a tantrum because the toy she wanted wasn’t in stock but still.

”Ah…used to zat meinself.” His hand remained untaken and so he quickly dropped is hand to his side. The bruise his face had sported a few weeks had finally healed. He reached up touching the spot then shook himself. And speaking of pride, he swallowed his and asked ”Can you hent me mein kane?”

And then she was yelling at the elevator. He flinched. Since his eyesight had been ruined, his hearing and sense of smell had become more sensitive. He didn’t say anything about it though. Clearly the lady was a bit upset. ”May hap ve schould take schtairs?” he offered. With her help he could probably make it without slipping on poop or owl feathers or by an owl flying into him. But of course, just has he offered that idea, the elevator doors closed. Instinctively, he reached out and put a steadying hand on the lady’s shoulder as the elevator took off.

Delyth was, if ever so briefly, in her own world of rage, which might have looked comical to some. Standing there, her arms pressed to her sides stiffly as the doors closed, she stared forward for a moment before actually answering the man next to her “Oh..uh. Yes of course” reaching down now to pick up the cane that resided close to her feet. How had she been so unobservant? Well, that was obvious, the pain in her temple was a testament to that.

As for the stairs, well, that was out of the question. The poor fellow looked like he was struggling to catch the lift up to the atrium, let alone walk up several flights of stairs and this blonde was not tall or strong enough to be a second walking stick for him. No thank you. Even now as he gingerly rested a hand on her shoulder, she could tell he wouldn’t have made it. Although, if he had asked, she wouldn’t have refused for fear of seeming rude. Take now for example, with his hand resting on her shoulder, the blonde didn’t show any sign of uncomfortableness at his touch even if he was leaning on her a little too much. Choosing to not focus on that, and also to distract her, Delyth asked the first question that popped into her head “So, when you’re not falling over people in lifts, what is it that you actually do?” her expression polite now.

Clear signs of frustration were apparent on his face, and some rather choice words were being muttered under his breath. It was only a matter of time before the Gryffindor in him was fully unleashed.
Between his daughter going through A PHASE, his sons reaching THAT age and practically tearing down the walls of their home in anticipation for starting Hogwarts IN ANOTHER YEAR, and dodging owl secretions on his suits...it was a wonder the man did not have more grey hairs. Add the unsettling sensation that someone constantly had eyes on him...and Airey Flamsteed was overstretched like his body was going through spaghettification and speaking in Klingon much more these days. The latter of these was particularly unpleasant, though a rather niche audience so mostly it just seemed as though the department head was losing his marbles*

....which...well...

Presently he had business with the Minister, a report that could not be trusted to be delivered by anyone else, and was on his way to the lift when he saw his former pupil button mashing it. "It's not a video game, Mr. Paton. Pushing the button harder and faster will not speed the lift's arrival."

He hadn’t fallen over…his cane had tumbled but he hadn’t. Surely lady in the lift next to him could tell the difference between a black and white support cane and a 6 foot tall guy. Maybe she had hit her head? He eyed her speculatively through his very large, coke bottle lenses. Was it rude to ask? Maybe…last time he’d asked someone if they were alright, he’d gotten his head bit off. ”Unspeakable. Lefel nine,” he said answering her question and deciding to keep an eye on her for other odd behavior. In fact, now he was wondering if his bad eyes had been playing with him and the lift had brought them to the Atrium…

He pulled his hand back from her. It had been intended to make sure she didn’t fall over again, but the lift was traveling normally for the moment, so he felt like the touching had become uncomfortable. Also, for some reason, he had the feeling that Zita would kill him if she saw him like this. Even if their relationship was still in (and didn’t seem to be leaving) limbo. ”On mein vay home. “ And he was, despite the earliness of the day. He’d spent the entire night working on a potion. ”Ent you?” he asked making conversation.

He was an unspeakable? Delyth had always wondered what the unspeakables really got up to there on level nine. Briefly, she eyed him, curious if they all weird grey, glowing eyes and a walking stick? Sure, it wasn’t likely but maybe. “Oh? That’s interesting” Somehow, she felt as though she wasn’t allowed to ask any other questions about his work. It was after all, unspeakable.

For some reason Delyth had thought they were getting off at the same level but obviously not. Well, maybe that was a good thing because there seemed to be a lot of calamity following them both at the moment and that was something, she could do without in her life thank you very much. “Well, I’m about to have some breakfast”. That was, if she could ever get to the food court. “I usually have some at home but I thought I’d have an early start".

Seeming not to need her shoulder to stay up right, Delyth shuffled ever so slightly to her left so as to lean up against the wall of the lift and waited patiently for the food court which, if she was correct, was the next floor.

”Hmmm…I can be.” He said. He was happy he had worded his answer to her question the way he had, because it cut off some of the usual questions he tended to get about his job. Questions he couldn’t really answer. ”Undt vhat do you do?” he asked. Best to turn the conversation around so she didn’t try to ask more questions.

”Breakfast? In ze food court?” he hadn’t been up there in a while, but the sudden thought that the owls were in the food court as they were everywhere, made his stomach turn. Nope…he’d be getting his breakfast somewhere else while he wrote his correspondence. ”Are you certain zat is a good idea?” He spoke the question without thinking about it. Perhaps it was overstepping to be concerned. Perhaps she didn’t have a different option. Either way…Adam wasn’t sure he’d want to chance it. He’d had too many bad experiences in the food court and no, being turned into an animal from the food wasn’t one of them.

What does she do? Most likely nothing as exciting as what he did but she still found it to be very rewarding an important. “I work on Level One” she replied happily. She really did love her job, even if it didn’t pay amazing well and it didn’t require her to work long hours and take work home. “I’m a student aid advisor”she continued now, adding on at the end so as to not make it sound like she was someone important who worked closely with the minister “I help families who struggle to afford to send their children to Hogwarts. You know, so they can buy books and what not”.

“Uh…yes? Is there something wrong with that?”
Sure, it wasn’t exactly a five-star restaurant but it served decent food, right? She didn’t actually know because this was her first time eating there but surely it couldn’t be that bad? Either way, she didn’t have a choice this morning unless the stranger could suggest something better? Because it was either this or starve and this little blonde does not mess around when starving. Not one single bit. She may be petite and charming but take away her food and she will soon turn into a banshee.

Oh good. She seemed happy about the inquiry. He listened to her, content to enjoy her delight in talking about her job. ”Sounds like a fulfilling chob.” He sometimes wish his job was that fulfilling. Lately it had been filled with endless potions experiments that hadn’t produced anything results. At least he hadn’t had any explosions, both of his eyebrows were still intact, and he didn’t smell like brunt pineapple. ”How long haf you been doing it?” Because she sounded on the younger side. Didn’t mean she was – just that Adam couldn’t tell, what with being mostly blind and all.

And she clearly hadn’t been around the ministry long if she didn’t know about the food court.”Vere to schtart…” he mused. He should probably keep his own personal experiences with the food court of his this review. He doubted she would end up with pudding dumped on her head by an auror who though it was funny to pick on the blind guy. And she probably had no interested in learning he’d gotten into a huge fight with his….what was Zita? He still wasn’t sure even after all this time. But it wasn’t the time to decide if he was single or not. So he went with, ”Ze food zere had turned humans into animals a few years ago undt vell,” he waved his finger which was currently wrapped up in the lady’s handkerchief around. [b]” All ze owls.”[/b He could only imagine the mess. ”Personally, I'd take a few extra minutes to go to ze cafe off uff Trafalgar square.”

Just then the doors opened on Level 7. He didn't hear the sound of the fountain and sighed. His grip tightened on his support stick. It was ok. he could probably manage the stairs down one flight. "I zink I'll try mein chances on ze schtairs before ve get trapped in here like ambassadors did a few monzs ago."

“It really is fulfilling. I get to help people. What more do you need?” It was an interesting question at least. What more did she need? If you’d have asked her a few months back when the memos had been going AWOL, she would have said sleep. But now, she was content with her work even if it did cause her social life to suffer. “I’ve actually been in the ministry a little over a year now?” it was more of a question to herself than her lift buddy really. It had seemed like a life time ago that she’d joined but in reality, it was just a year. One year of hard work.

Eyes glazed over now, Delyth stood there in the lift as it swerved and swivelled towards their destination. True, she loved her job but she still didn’t know how long she would be there for. She wanted more of a work/life balance and working on level one, it just wasn’t working at the moment. Sighing, she forced herself to focus on the conversation at hand. Ah, the food court.

“Really? Animals? How on did that happen?” she replied, covering her mouth now as she chuckled, self-conscious that she would start giggling if she didn’t. Maybe the food court wasn’t the best idea but she’d just coming in from London having caught the muggle train in from the flat and venturing back up to Trafalgar Square was just too much effort for this petite ministry worker. “Maybe I’ll try Trafalgar Square tomorrow” her face a picture of concentration as she tried her hardest, and failed to not giggle at the handkerchief that was being waved in her face. This fellow really was an odd egg. Giving a small nod and polite wave, she stepped back, giving him plenty of space to get off. “You do that. If anyone asks where I am, tell them I’m most likely still trying to go up to the food court”.

It sounded like a grand job. Helping people. Steady work. He almost wished he had taken up work like that. Almost. It probably wouldn’t have been satisfying enough for him though. He really enjoyed tinkering with potions. ”A year?” And she hadn’t heard about the food court incident? Well she either was extremely dedicated to her job or her job kept her super busy. He might have asked her more about her time here, expected she then asked for clarification on the human-to-animal situation. ”I beliefe ze official finding vas zat ze prefious minister did somezing to ze buffet.” But he wasn’t 100% sure on that, and perhaps his voice sounded that way. Personally? When combined with the owl situation and the other things that had happened to him there, he did everything he could to avoid the area.

It seemed that the lady was going to take her chances. He nodded at her as he walked off the lift, support cane tippity-tapping as he moved it side to side. ”Good luck undt daanke again fur ze hentkerchief. If you go to ze kafe, I recommend ze grilled kheese. “ It had apple slices on it and was very very good.

“Yup, just a year. I know. I couldn’t be greener” she conceded with a small smile, knowing full well she was still young and had a long way to go. “But it feels like so much longer” Would she have changed anything though? Not likely. She was content for now. Although maybe she’d have reconsider if the former minister of magic could get away with something like that. “I don’t know how I didn’t hear about this” she confessed, slightly rosy cheeked that it had somehow slipped her attention. It must have been front page news but she had still somehow obliviously gone on with her life. With a small shake of her head she continued “Maybe I just arrived after it happened? Or I could have been away all together. I try to go back to Edinburgh as much as I can”. The large city with its closed in streets and castle overlooking much of it was one of her favourite places and the accent…well, it had been known to make the blonde go weak at the knees from time to time.

With a polite nod and wave, Delyth watched as he got out of the lift, a little torn as she watched him leave. Poor dab might need her help up the stairs. But he seemed sure of himself so who was she to force her help on anyway. “I’ll keep that in mind” she called as he sidled off in the direction of the stairs. After repeating her destination, the blonde stood back and closed her eyes for a moment, still slightly sleep from the early morning and lack of coffee in her system. If she was being honest though, she was simply lost in memories of her university days.

Push. Push. Push, push, push, push!

This lift door was really trying his patience, which the blond knew he had very little of to begin with. The hand he wasn't using to push the button was itching to reach into his pocket for his wand and make quick work (Auror-style) of whatever malfunction the lift was having. With everything else going on in the Ministry, a properly working lift would have been a blessing.

But the wand remained in his pocket courtesy of a rather familiar voice. Immediately he stopped spamming the button and turned his head to face Flamsteed. Of course his former Astronomy professor would be the one to appear at this exact moment. It was almost like being at school all over again.

"I'm aware of that, sir," Frankie responded to the older man. "The lift isn't working." He left it at that, letting the seemingly broken lift speak for itself.
