Default Staff Room

In the corridor branching off the Entrance Hall, you notice two stone gargoyles guarding a door. You will soon learn that these statutes love to gossip. For those that have been attending Hogwarts for a while, it is common knowledge that this room is for the staff members of the school. The grand mahogany door that separates the corridor and the room is typically locked, so it is best that you not to even attempt entering unless you want detention.

Beyond the door is a long, large circular table, big enough to fit each person employed at Hogwarts, stands front and centre. This is where all the professors and support staff sit and discuss important school matters, ranging from discussions on the curriculum to problem students. A large wardrobe, once home to a boggart, is placed next to a small table on one side of the room and is full of various coats and robes long forgotten by their previous owners. The table holds two boxes: one containing spare parchment and quills and the other confiscated student items.

The opposite end of the staff room is arguably the more popular spot in the room. Placed strategically by a large fireplace, comfy leather sofas and chairs provide an excellent place for the adults to socialize with each other or take a much-needed nap.

Default Post Creature Companion stuff.

Had Regina approved of the lake exploration Tristian had set up for the Creature Companion members and whoever wanted to join them? Yes. Did she expect them to see anything beyond the merpeople village and the occasional grindylow? No. Was she surprised that the group managed to have stumbled upon an underwater cave with unknown, mysterious objects? In all honesty, she couldn't say she was completely surprised. Hogwarts, after all, did have many mysteries.

She was just thankful that this one didn't involve any monsters from an alternate universe or a heap of curses or student possessions. A few days had passed since some of the students returned with some of the items and nothing happened. As for the rest of the items she and some others had recently retrieved on their own...

"I think we have nothing to worry about here," she finally said, eyeing the hoard that was now taking up most of the space on the staff table. She made one last swoosh with her wand, concluding minutes of intense spell-casting. "There are no curses or anything dark as far as I can tell. Just some hidden bind runes."

"I think we have nothing to worry about here, no curses or anything dark." Laurel looked up from examining the items in the hoard, at the sound of Regina's statement. ”Good, but I'll still scry for dark magic so we can be super sure." Especially since a few students had needed medical attention after the lake exploration after being attacked by grindylows, and some were Slytherins.

"Hidden bind runes? Who would put bind runes on these kind of objects and why?" Laurel wondered out loud. Was this the work of a long dead wizard or someone with no relation to magic at all? There were plenty of folk she knew that used runes but Regina was the expert.

Curses? Hidden bind runes?

And to think Hirsch had only come in for a cup of coffee.

Currently standing along the table, the man frowned slightly at the piece he was rotating slowly in the air with his wand. Every now and then, he muttered something under his breath but nothing was said to the other companions in the room, not when there was a lot of concentration going on.

At Regina's words, however, he let the item fall gently back on the table before glancing at the Headmistress herself. Nothing to worry about? No curses or anything dark? She was right about that, that's for sure, but then again, this was Hogwarts. Mysterious objects in Hogwarts set his alarm bells ringing, especially given what had happened here in the past few years alone.

Hirsch's eyebrows furrowed even more at the words 'hidden bind runes' and he glanced down at the items on the table before looking over at Laurel. "Could be anyone who's good with runic magic," Shrug. "Maybe the items meant something to them? Maybe they wanted to protect them? Maybe they wanted to protect something else and the items are used as security?" There were a lot of reasons why people used bind runes but those seemed to be the ones he could think of. "I think it's hard to say right now..." His voice trailed off as he glanced over at the others to see their take on this, especially Regina.

As for the items themselves, "What should we do with these?" He personally wanted to keep them as far away from student hands as possible.

Tristan sat in a chair equidistant from the table and the fireplace with his mug of Chai Tea, brooding over the fact that students were harmed on his watch. He was supposed to be listening to the conversation about the treasure and whether or not it was dangerous, but he just couldn't focus on it. He had put his students in harms way...

He sighed, and took a sip of his tea. He knew there was nothing he could do to change it now, but he still felt terribly and kept dwelling on the fact that he should have stayed with them instead of helping the Merpeople. But had he not helped them it could have been bad for the students as well. It was a catch 22 of sorts.

When Roderik asked what should happen with the items that were found his head snapped up to look at his colleagues and his eyes flickered to the treasures and back up. "I think they should be kept under lock and key. We don't know for sure if they are safe or not, even if we can't detect anything wrong." Normally he would be all about letting the students do research about such things, but not after what happened. Overprotective professor mode engaged!

Kalen was mainly in the staff room to refill his cup of earl grey tea. And he was halfway paying attention to what was going on with the stuff on the table, but mainly he was more concerned about his friend. Triscuit seemed down and he couldn’t have that.

Tea in hand he stood behind Tristan’s chair and put a hand on his shoulder, there wasn’t much else he could do, but he could at least try to comfort him a bit.

He looked at what everyone was looking at and he nodded.

“I agree with Tris.” He said softly. “They should be kept under lock and key. I don’t think they should he bear the students.” It just seemed like they were asking for trouble.

Kay felt awkward being there. Here the staff was talking about keeping the kiddos safe when she herself had been a danger to them last term. Some of her fellow staffers couldn't still even look her in the eye and she thought it best not to force things on them. Like Laurel said, she would give them time. That was why when she arrived at the Room, she simply slipped silently in.

Standing behind everyone, she was still able to get a good look at the recovered items on the table. "Enchantments stronger than basic Alohomora,'' she said quietly. There were so adventurous students who might be too inquisitive for their own good. "Do you think the Ministry should take an extra look at it? In case anything was missed?'' Kaysha directed her question to Regina. Not that she didn't trust her colleagues. Second opinions were sometimes good.`

Gaston stood near the far wall, watching intently as Hawthorne and Hirsch performed their spells on the objects from the lake. A part of him wanted to get a closer look at the treasure, but he'd been at Hogwarts long enough to know not to touch a random object, especially after... The events of the past couple of terms replayed in his mind, and his expression turned worried. This wasn't going to be another curse, was it?

He breathed a silent sigh of relief when Hawthorne said there was no curse or dark magic. His attention drifted slightly as Laurel mentioned scrying, and he noticed Tristan . He had a pretty good idea what Tristan must be feeling; he felt the same way -if not worse- seeing students hurt, especially when it happened on his watch. He gave the other man a sympathetic look but remained silent. He knew from experience that there was nothing he could say.

Gaston was jerked out of his thoughts as Hirsch asked what to do with the objects. Tristan and Kalen voiced exactly what he was thinking, and he nodded in agreement. It seemed unnecessary to repeat what had already been said. It was only when Kay mentioned enchantments that he spoke up. "I could help with the enchantments," he volunteered. "I use a series of complicated locking charms on the glass case in my office. I could modify those spells to lock these objects away from the students..." If the others approved, of course.

Haraldur was not talkative in this meeting. He sat at the far end of the table, leaned back in his chair with his hands clasped over his belly in front of him. With a deep frown, his eyes followed the slow, circular movements Roderik’s wand made. The young man muttered under his breath and at first, Haraldur leaned forward thinking he said something to the rest of the group. His hearing had significantly decreased. Pardon? Come again? Speak up, lad. When he realized the DADA professor just mumbled to himself, Haraldur leaned back again. Oh, kids.

He nodded in agreement as his colleagues voiced their concerns and opinions, adding a resounding ‘Yes’ at the first mention of keeping them away from the children. Involving the Ministry however was not something the old man wanted. They just marched in and set up a bunch of rules all the time. Like that Lynley Purcell from Magical Transportation who just had to control his lesson on Flying Carpets a few years ago. He was not a fan. He didn’t mention this though, Kay had a hard enough time back at work as it was without her ideas being shot down. Instead, he just mumbled something about Ministry regulation and refocused his gaze on the items again.

Haraldur trusted his colleagues but he also trusted his gut. And his gut told him to still be cautious. With everything that had happened at Hogwarts the past terms, they did well to be careful. All he knew was that he wanted the objects as far away as possible. They could throw the items back in the Lake or lock them away where no one could find them. Either way. Good riddance. Bye and such.

The headmistress' gaze shifted from the items on the table to those with her in the staff room. First there was Laurel, who mentioned scrying and then asked a series of questions. She wasn't too sure that the scrying was necessary, considering the complex spells she had casted to detect anything, but didn't say so. At this point, maybe it wouldn't hurt to tap into the Inner Eye.

Her eyes then locked with Roderik, and she couldn't help but nod her head at what he said in response to the Laurel's questions. He had taken the words right out of her mouth. "I agree. We can't say for certain at this point what the bind runes are meant to do or who put them there. A closer examination of each individual rune that make up the bind rune is needed to determine that. But my hunch is that the bind runes on these items were used to invoke strength, protection, and so on. If they were being used for dark purposes, then we would be dealing with the repercussions already."

Regina could sense the unease in all of them though, and understandably so. She wasn't surprised at all by the answers given to Roderik's question of what they should do with the items. But she agreed with what they all said. Tristian -- who she didn't blame at all for what had happened -- and Kalen were right about everything needed to be locked up and out of student reach. The woman opened her mouth to agree, but her focused shifted when the Ministry was mentioned.

Should they be involved? Regina, like Haraldur (if only she could hear his mumbling from the end of the table), wasn't too keen on that. She didn't need Ministry employees barging in, thinking she and her staff were incompetent when they clearly were more than capable. "For the time being," she replied to Kaysha, "let's leave the Ministry out of this. We have everything under control at the moment and there is no immediate danger as far as we can tell. I will make contact, though I do not think Ministry intervention is necessary right now."

Now, back to the question of what to do with the items. Hawthorne stood there in silence, thinking of where the safest place would be. The staff room wasn't exactly ideal, and they were there right now mostly for convenience. She briefly considered the Room of Requirement or one of the underground chambers, but those options were ruled out considering how often students explored those areas. "How about we keep these objects in the loft of my office? And, though the gargoyle ought to keep any student out, we can" -- she casted a look over to Gaston -- "set up a variety of enchantments to make sure the items cannot be summoned or easily removed."

Derf honestly had not been meaning to drop no eaves, honest. He had just been chasing down his bowtruckle who had managed to slip away and out of his reach - she enjoyed playing tag from time to time and the Hufflepuff was pretty sure she particularly enjoyed him chasing after her. Picketta had slipped under the shut door effortlessly, causing the fifteen year old to nearly slam right into it.

Thankfully for everyone, his feet had come to a bit of a screeching halt and he had not, however. Unaware of where he was and simply wanting to recapture his bowtruckle (he could have been in front of the girls' loo, the kitchen, an empty classroom for all he knew) Derf's reached for the handle and swung the door open juuuuuuuuuuuuuuust in time to hear the tail end of what the Headmistress was saying. Which meant he hadn't heard anything too terribly important.

That is, he had heard a great deal about not wanting the Ministry involved, and bind runes, and something maybe about the end of the world (okay that last bit was in his head)...so hopefully he wouldn't get transfigured into anything too terribly unnatural as punishment for disturbing the meeting - the door HAD been unlocked and stuff though so....

"I...uh...um..." he stammered, eyes wide and in shock as he stared at the VERY occupied room. His bowtruckle was scrambling around in there somewhere...and the problem was she really only answered to her Home Tree now but even so she was in a playful mood which made her willingness to obey quite slim.

It was a blessing and a curse, really.

"....hello."

Celestia had been leaning against the wall nearest to the table throughout this discussion. Her brown eyes had remained fixed on the objects that had been retrieved from the lake, wavering only to dart to each of her coworkers as they spoke in turn. Despite Regina's and Roderik's assurances, Celestia couldn't help the bit of doubt that was burrowing slowly into her mind as each minute went by. It seemed so unlikely to her that there was nothing wrong with these objects -- not when they had been guarded by a horde of grindylows. As she thought of the grindylows, her eyes darted to Tristan briefly. She knew that it wasn't his fault that the students had been attacked during the trip into the lake in her head, but her heart was not so easy to convince. Any remaining frostiness that she felt towards the CoMC professor had rapidly deteriorated as she observed his behavior in the staff room, though; it could not have been more obvious to her that he felt genuine remorse for the students being hurt. This observation had allowed Celestia to breathe easier and to resume her typically friendly attitude around Tristan. Glancing at the man now, she asked a question carefully to the room at large, "Do, err, we have any idea why the grindylows were gathered in that particular cave? Was it certainly to guard these?" She gestured towards the treasure laid out on the table. Perhaps Tristan or one of the others had learned something when they'd ventured back down to the cave after the students' trip. Celestia sincerely hoped that there was a convenient stash of whatever the water demons typically ate accumulated in the cave or some other perfectly normal explanation for their presence there. But she doubted it.

She was extremely glad that Kaysha's idea of dragging the Ministry into this matter was shot down fairly quickly by Regina. Celestia was no more a fan of that sort of interference than the Flying instructor or Regina were. She shifted awkwardly from foot to foot, and was on the brink of suggesting that they simply chuck all the treasure back in the lake to be on the safe side, when the staff room door flung open and a student rushed inside. Frowning slightly, Celestia raised an eyebrow at the Hufflepuff prefect. "Hello, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne. Did you need something?", she asked in an even tone as she struggled to hide her slight annoyance. Really, hadn't the Hufflepuff heard of knocking? The only thing that had saved him from immediate point loss from the Transfiguration professor for barging in unannounced was the possibility that something was seriously wrong.

Kay nodded in Regina's direction. She didn't really want the Ministry involved either but if it involved the safety of the kiddos... It had only been an idea not a suggestion exactly. Oh hello.

Blue eyes swung to Derf and remained focused upon him. Just how much had he heard? Had he been eavesdropping since the start of this meeting? But no... he looked so taken aback that he couldn't have been eavesdropping on purpose. Unless that's what he wants you to think, said a voice in her head.

Regardless, this was no place for him to be at present.

Noble was sat at the far end of the table, as far away from the door and pestering students as possible. There had been a scowl on his face, his already brief coffee break and time with the football results disturbed, but it had since softened slightly into thoughtfulness as his gaze moved over the items. He trusted Regina's conclusions; Roderik's a little less. And there was an audible grumble escaping his lips at mentions of the Ministry. Which side he supported, however, was unclear.

"I think those bind runes need investigating before we decide too much..." Noble said, sitting back in his chair. He knew it was Regina's field of expertise, but still worth vocalising that as far as he'd picked up, they'd only explicitly looked for dark stuff so far. The bind runes could presumably tell them more about the what and why. "And it's still a treasure find. Which means it's meant to be reported." To where, off the top of his head, he wasn't sure...although the British Museum sounded about right. He just remembered reading something about treasure finds belonging to the Crown, and fines for those who failed to report one. "...wouldn't hurt to get it valued and seen by an expert."

While she waited to hear everyone's thoughts on keeping the objects in her office, she did hear Celestia's question loud and clear. It was a question that she didn't have a concrete answer for. She knew the basics of grindylow behavior: they were aggressive dark creatures, survive mostly on algae and fish but didn't mind a taste of human flesh, and could be found in weed beds. Regina, though, didn't think they were there to guard the treasure. It was more likely that they just found refuge in the cave, safely hidden behind all of that tall weed. But, of course, she was certain that Tristan or even Roderik could weigh in more on that.

The headmistress' head perked up when Ignatius spoke. "Of course," she said, agreeing that the bind runes needed a closer looking at. "I am fairly certain that these bind runes aren't meant for dark purposes." If they were, well, they would already be able to tell. Plus the spells had been casted would have revealed more than just hidden bind runes. "But a closer analysis would make the purpose of them clearer. Even more so with historical context, since these appear to be quite old."

As for his comment about the find needing to be reported, she nodded her head."And where would you suggest searching for said expert to look at these objects?"

Of course, she wasn't expecting an answer to come from him right at that moment. A stammering and then Celestine's mention of the Hufflepuff male prefect caused her to jerk her head toward the door. She, standing in front of the table and blocking some of the items from the boy's view, then crossed her arms, hoping he hadn't been there long enough to hear too much, and waited for an explanation as to why he suddenly decided to barge in a room meant for only staff. "Well, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne?" There had better be a good reason...

Swedishfish Girl! Madame Librarian! Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede!

Laurel sat in a corner of the table and eyed the hoard of objects with equal curiousity and suspicion. Around her the discussion flowed back and forth amongst her colleagues as several good points were raised. Chiming in Laurel concurred with many of her colleagues with Regina’s suggestion. "We should definitley keep the objects away from the students and in a secure place. I think the loft of the Headmistress office would suffice as a safe spot with added enchantments." And not to mention the scary gargoyle at the door.

Ignatius raised his voice and insisted that the old objects should be examined and valued by an expert. Where they’d find that reliable expert though Laurel didn’t catch before the door was opened to reveal a student. Blinking it took some time for her to register who the student until Celestia adressed him. Standing up to go around the table to stand near Regina to block all the objects from view she added her own question to the others. "Do you need professor assistance to deal with a situation that has arisen somewhere Prefect Ashburry-Hawthorne?"

Okay BUT in his defense...if they didn't want students overhearing there should be wards and enchantments and like...teenager repelling charms in place around the room, you know? Like what some muggle shopping centers did - as he had heard from dad - with playing certain frequency music or something to that effect. Not to mention the door being unlocked.

Why oh WHY hadn't Picketta picked another door to slide under and a different room to hide in? An unused classroom or Jessa's...wait no. Not Jessa's lab. The experiments and things that went on in there were sights and such taht the fifth year would rather pretend he did not know his best friend was up to.

And you know something else? Being called Prefect Ashburry-Hawthorne was something he was never going to get used to. Ever. It was still surreal and, well, he sorta had this aversion to titles and labels - unnecessarily so but it was still there.

"I...um..." he stammered, his bright blues darting around the floor in hopes of spotting a flash of vibrant green while also TRYING DESPERATELY to push all the information he had just overheard aside - which really meant that he just thought about it more...sorta like when you told a person not to think about purple polka dotted Welsh Greens. It was ALL you could think about! "Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuum..." Breathe, Derfael, breath. "....bowtruckle." He finally managed after another beat or so while looking at the Headmistress.

So eloquent under pressure he was, yes.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Runes meant no doubt that Regina would be very capable of handling the situation in figuring out what they were dealing with. Roderick could help if there were dark magic, Kay figured. Since they almost all seemed in agreement with where to keep the artefacts, they could focus on the certain Hufflepuff in their midst...

Or maybe focusing that much wasn't such a good idea.

Kay felt sorry for Derf but she was still wondering how much he had heard. It wouldn't do good to have what was just discussed get out to the kiddos lest there cause drama of some sort.

Bowtruckle?

"The bowtruckle ran in here?'' she asked kindly. If that was the case she hadn't noticed the creature.

Celestia nodded in affirmation at Laurel's statement that the headmistress's office would be a secure place to store the objects. As for Ignatius's words about an expert, Celestia was certainly not opposed to the idea. She wasn't entirely sure where they would find such an expert outside of the Ministry, however. Surely he wasn't suggesting a Muggle expert? The Transfiguration professor didn't have anything against Muggles, but if the objects turned out to have magical properties of some kind, they obviously couldn't risk Muggles handling them. She would say so if that was who Ignatius suggested.

The Hufflepuff prefect's obvious anxiety drew a small amount of sympathy from Celestia. However, she still felt that he was out of bounds by bursting in like he had. Why hadn't those useless statues outside the door told him there was a meeting going on? With a sigh, Celestia tuned back in to the prefect's words -- and Kaysha's. Her eyebrow climbed slightly up her forehead at the mention of a creature that was certainly not allowed in the castle.
"How would a bowtruckle get so far away from the grounds?", she asked Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne sternly. As a prefect, he ought to be setting an example for the other students, not breaking commonly-known rules by bringing in such a pet. She supposed that perhaps the creature had managed to escape the barn and the prefect was likely tracking it down. Naturally, the staff had all been so focused on the objects laid out on the table that she doubted they would have noticed a bowtruckle hiding in the room or scampering across the floor.

The question of how much Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne had overheard was another one that required an answer, but Celestia thought it best to leave that aspect of the intrusion -- along with the discipline -- to Regina. She didn't want to overstep her bounds by taking points herself with the headmistress in the room. There was also the fact that a bit of unease at how frightened the Hufflepuff seemed to be was worming its way into her chest. Should students be that frightened of the staff? She frowned slightly as she waited for someone else to speak.

With the loot on the table for the time being forgotten, Regina still stood facing toward the Hufflepuff prefect. Her face remained blank, her arms still crossed. She was waiting for that explanation of his before making any further decisions.

And then that explanation came ... sort of. To be honest, the boy's response didn't make a whole lot of sense to her. It only raised more questions. What about a bowtruckle? As far as she was aware, they were outdoors where they were meant to be. Was there a bowtruckle attack cause by someone stupidly disturbing their Home Tree? Did someone sneak a branch of them inside the castle and now they were running wild? Did Derfael bring one into the castle against obvious school rules and it wound up in their private space?

The questions that were asked by the other female adults in the room were valid. While Regina had plenty of her own, she didn't voice them. Her colleague's questions, as well as the deadpan look on her own face, were enough to let the Hufflepuff know that he still had some explaining to do. She certainly needed more elaboration from the prefect, rather than come to her own conclusions based on a one-word response, before determining what to do.

Gaston stood back, listening intently to his colleagues' discussion, though he had nothing more to add at the moment. He had to stare at the floor to keep himself from rolling his eyes at the mention of the Ministry. A bunch of pompous, power hungry peacocks, the lot of them! He was still angry about their handling of the Dufftown incident and had no desire to see them tromping all over Hogwarts, handing out erroneous reprimands left and right. And he thought the French Ministry was bad! At least his home country had enough common sense to bend their rules in the case of an emergency.

He opened his mouth to express his concerns, but Hawthorne voiced what he was thinking before he had the chance. He nodded in agreement; his expression changed slightly as he considered the headmistress's next words.
He was planning to volunteer his own office to hide the treasure, but he liked the idea of using Regina's loft better. "That sounds like a perfect hiding place," he replied, nodding again. "I'll get on that right away."

Gaston overheard Celestia's question but remained silent, as he wasn't sure he was the right person to answer it. After all, creatures weren't his area,
and he wasn't there when the grindylows attacked. He glanced toward Tristan, expecting an answer. Ignatius's words were also noted, but before he could respond...

Derfael burst into the room. He eyed the boy sympathetically, hoping to encourage him to speak. There was nothing to be afraid of, at least not from him. His top priority was to help the boy; any necessary discipline could come later. Blue eyes blinked in confusion at the mention of the bowtruckle.
He only vaguely heard Kay and Celestia's questions. Right now, he was more concerned with finding the creature than how and why it got here. "Did you see which way it went?" he asked, his eyes searching the room for any sign of the creature. He had to assume it was in here somewhere until he heard otherwise.

Opening his mouth, Derf nearly corrected the Muggle Studies professor with explaining that Picketta did more of a scamper than she did a run, but thankfully he had enough sense not to do that. He was already like an erumpent treading on thin ice as was sooooooooo no need to make things worse.

Which he always inevitably did to himself regardless. It truly was just a matter of time.

Although the Transfiguration professor provided a good enough question for him to sorta correct Professor Stewart anyway. "She scampered...really quickly," he answered sincerely, no snark nor sarcasm. The brunette had asked how and that was how, you know? "...and some leaping."

The Headmistress' silence was, well, mum was right in silence speaking louder than words. At least right now. At least the woman wasn't looking at him like a basilisk or anything? Though the look sorta reminded him of his mum and dad when they came home that one time and found the bathtubs all filled with pond water and tadpoles..and some other creatures...and they had folded their arms across their chests and just stared at him until he broke and rambled off what he had been doing and why. Which had resulted in him having to empty the tubs and scrub them clean for a month. Though he had also been able to keep approximately five tadpoles - that they were aware of at least, ahem - so all in all it had been a rather successful day despite some setbacks.

"I...um...Picketta," he began. So that everyone knew she had a name - though Professor Wayland already knew that since he had given her to him his first year. "She got out when I went to visit her...brilliantly clever and resourceful now...and I reckon she thought we were playing a bout of tag or hide-and-seek like we do sometimes...and she ran in here..." he explained while ruffling his hair a bit. Nervous tick of his that was hardly going anywhere. "Didn't even recognize where I was...too focused on trying to catch her."

...though that hardly explained how he had overheard stuff...but they were unaware of this fact. Thankfully. Finally not a #badluckDerf moment.

Though the rest of this was very much a #badluckDerf moment.

His bright blues quickly shifted to the Charms professor who seemed to be the ONLY one with their priorities in check - THANK YOU, SIR! - and the fifth year was disappointed that he could offer nothing more than a defeated shrug of the shoulder. "I...didn't see..." he frowned. Since she had slipped under the gap between the door and the floor and scampered about somewhere inside here that he couldn't see because there had been a door in the way, you know? "She likes...um...hiding in trouser legs though..." Usually how he could sneak her into the castle. Just rode on the rim of his shoes while clinging to his socks.

So...was anyone experiencing a bit of a pleasant scratching sensation?
Long finger dragging across the floor, the bowtruckle swiftly wove her way around all the trunks before her seeking out the perfect sort of hiding spot for her. Settling upon the trunk of a hooman who was speaking, her Home Tree teaching her enough of his silly language for her to understand that the hooman was offering to help find.....IT?! SHE was NOT an IT! With a fury, Picketta scrambled up and under the hem of his pantleg and tucked her rooty legs into his socks while her teeth chattered. Call her IT again ....

Regina was finding it very hard to believe that a bowtruckle would scamper from where it should have been aaaaaaaaaaaaall the way down in the creature barn. How it wound up aaaaaaaaaaaaall the way up to the castle in particular was a curious mystery. Something there just wasn't adding up in her opinion; bowtruckles just didn't scuttle into castles. And now they had a stray bowtruckle to find.

"Needless to say, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne," the headmistress finally said, her arms still very much crossed. "I am rather displeased with the simple fact that a student, a Prefect at that, barged into a room designated for staff all because you were chasing after a bowtruckle. I will be taking ten points from Hufflepuff." The door had been closed. The boy should have realized where in the castle he was. He should have knocked. It was common sense.

"We will discuss this matter further" -- again, she wasn't convinced that Derfael's pet just happened to flee from the barn to the castle -- "after we find Picketta."

But first, the woman reached for her wand and gave it a wave, causing the items on the table to levitate a few inches in the air and soar into a bag that had an Undetectable Extension Charm placed on it. While that was happening, her attention was on finding that bowtruckle. The creature was not up her trousers, thank Merlin.

Kay nodded understandingly at the prefect. She certainly understood just how mischievous pets could be. But unfortunately, she had not seen Picketta though her blue eyes were sweeping the room. She shot Derf a pitying look since Regina was speaking that sternly to him.

And yet she caught no glimpse of the bowtruckle.

"We should be careful lest we accidentally step on her,'' Kaysha murmured. Not that she doubted Picketta was silly enough get herself squashed. The adults might move too fast before she could get out of trouble.

"I'm sorry, Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne but it seems she has hidden herself.'' They'd just have to hunt a bit more... or summon the bowtruckle.

Default lololol Picketta! xD
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Gaston listened intently as Derf explained what had happened. The story got a slight eyebrow raise from the professor. He wasn't convinced the creature had managed to run - scamper - all the way into the castle without Derf noticing or catching up to her. He wouldn't be surprised at all if he was trying to sneak the bowtruckle into the castle, but he was going to need more proof than just his suspicion if he was going to dock points.

It didn't matter anyway, as Hawthorne had already done just that. Ten points.. wow, Gaston thought that was a bit harsh (he was thinking more along the lines of five), but he wasn't dumb enough to argue with Regina Hawthorne. Besides, they had a much bigger problem on their hands!

He nodded as Kaysha voiced exactly what he was thinking. He stood absolutely still, so as not to accidentally squish poor Picketta. His blue eyes darted around the room, paying special attention to the small nooks and crannies behind objects, but there was no sign of her. Gah! What was that?! Something suddenly tickled his leg, and he thought he heard a faint chattering sound. "I think I found her," he said, his eyes dropping to his feet. Hopefully the meaning was understood; Merlin, could this situation possibly get any more awkward?!

He sighed. Well, at least they knew Picketta was safe. Now to get her out of his trouser leg and back to Derf... He thought for a minute. He could always try to levitate her out, but she might spook and flee farther up his leg, which was the last thing he wanted! He was going to try a non-magical approach first. "Hello, Picketta," he said. "We're all glad you're safe." He felt ridiculous! The creature probably didn't understand a word he was saying, but he hoped the tone of his voice would put her at ease, if nothing else. He turned to Derf. "Do you have any treats we can give her?" he asked. Maybe they could coax her out with food.
