Once you've tickled the pear and turned the knob, the Hogwarts kitchen will be revealed to you. Located directly beneath the Great Hall, the kitchen is a high-ceilinged room with five identical tables to the ones in the dining room above. Unlike the room situated above however, heaped around the walls are large quantities of pots and pans. On one end of the room are shelves of plates and utensils, stoves, sinks, and a large brick fireplace.
Here numerous house-elves are working on the castle's next meal when they aren't tending to their other duties as employees of the school. The team of house-elves have specific assignments to accomplish inside the kitchen, whether it is to cook, wash the plates and cutlery, keep the pantry stocked, place more wood into the fire, or set the tables before everything is summoned to its exact replicas overhead. Though the house-elves are incredibly busy, they will surely serve you a snack ... if you aren't asking Algamus. Or you can, of course, make your own food. Just don't leave a mess behind!

Nyle had definitely not intentionally skipped breakfast.
He had simply… postponed it... ish.
After all, what kind of responsible Hufflepuff would interrupt fourth year Herbology mid-lesson with a slice of toast still in his mouth and risk disciplinary action against his when they were in second place? No, no ... so much better to just accidentally oversleep, let the class period pass, and then casually emerge from his dormitory like nothing at all was wrong.
Totally normal. Totally believable.
So hen why did his footsteps echo so loudly down the corridor as if he were a mountain troll? His hood was pulled over his head like that might shield him from the weight of his own conscience as he tickled the pear and slipped inside, the wave of warmth, clatter, and aroma enveloping him instantly.
"Good morning," he murmured, offering a sheepish smile to the nearest house elf as his stomach let out a grumble so loud he was certain he saw he cupboard doors shake. "Er… late breakfast? Or, you know… an early lunch? Whichever sounds less irresponsible."

A certain Phoebe CalypsoDupont typically spent her free periods on her own. That wasn't to say that friends weren't allowed to come along, or that she didn't enjoy their company when they did come. It was just that- well- Phoebe had just always been like this. Being alone had its benefits, anyways.
On this particular occasion, Phoebe was headed towards the kitchen. The plan was to combine her free period and her lunch period and make a secret batch of cookies that she could put in busy locations for other Hogwartians to find. Did everyone know that it was Phoebe doing the baking? Probably. But she always felt embarrassed by idea of handing them out personally. It was a little desperate, she thought- people might think that she was looking for attention, or something. As she poked her head into the kitchen, she was surprised to find that she wasn't alone. She considered coming back later, but then she realized that it was only Nyle. Nyle was like a brother to her, though she had never actually said that word. She knew he wasn't actually related to her. Maybe.
"Eating is never not responsible," she said helpfully from behind him. "I take it you missed your breakfast?"

He froze at the sound of the voice behind him, a piece of toast halfway to his mouth half hanging out and dripping orange marmalade all over the floor - the exact image of someone caught in the act. Which, he supposed, he was.
"Uh—well, that’s good," Nyle managed, his voice pitching up slightly as he turned toward her. "Because I’m being very responsible right now. Hyper-responsible, even." He gestured vaguely toward the plate in front of him as if breakfast at this hour were a deliberate life choice and not an avoidance strategy. In spite of his growth spurt, which had left him feeling like an oak tree among his peers, he felt like a sapling in front of Phoebe right now. Her presence always threw his thoughts into a bit of a spin, but especially now as it felt like at least a dozen people had cast Circumrota on him. Her had always seen Phoebe as one of those people who carried her energy like sunlight, making the whole room feel a little less heavy just by existings. She’d been the first person at Hogwarts to not only indulge his ramblings but encourage them too and that had left quite the impression on the then first year. Being around her reminded him of...well...it reminded him of what it was like to be around someone else...only not exactly. One had the quiet allure and majesty of a Norandola whereas the other more familiar and grounding like a sunflower.
In this moment, however, he felt like he’d been caught with his hand sans gloves in a greenhouse’s compost heap.
"Missed breakfast," he echoed, attempting a laugh that came out half-nervous, half-amused. "Yeah. Stayed up too late revising my History of Magic essay I suppose." A beat. "And, uh… what about you?"
He smiled weakly, trying to sound casual, but the tips of his ears were already pink only to flare red when he noticed the mess of marmalade he had made on the floor.
Oh no...no no...
Algamus wasn't around right now, was he?

"Somehow, I'm not convinced. But okay." Being in the kitchen wasn't inherently suspicious, but Nyle sure made it sound like it was. It wasn't her business why he was here, not really- but she was curious and slightly disappointed as to why he thought he couldn't tell her about it. Everyone had their secrets, she supposed. She didn't tell him everything, and she had never claimed to.
"I'm baking chocolate chip cookies... I was thinking it might make people happy while they study. Happyish, at least." Phoebe certainly didn't associate herself with sunlight. If she was the sun, she felt no warmth because of it- and because she didn't feel it, she wasn't sure whether her presence could feel warm to someone else. But she tried to be warm anyways- just in case someone actually did want cookies or advice or seeds or someone to make them feel less alone. "You can help if you want. I wouldn't mind company." She brushed past him, stepping over the marmalade puddle and moving towards the cabinets to carefully grab flour and sugar and other ingredients.

Algamus did not, in fact, seem to be around... which meant Nyle could breathe a little more easily. At least for now.
“Happyish sounds like the perfect level of ambition for the day,” he said with a lopsided smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. Most didn't these days though, to be fair. The word alone was oddly comforting the more he rolled it around in his thoughts. It didn’t demand perfection or joy, just... effort. Maybe that was enough?
“I can - uh, stir things? Or measure? I promise I’m less of a hazard with flour than I am with the other sort... uh the ones that photosynthesizes.” The admission came unconsciously and paired with a nervous little laugh, one that had both his hands hands running haphazardly through his hair as he followed her toward the counter.
Truthfully, he hadn’t meant to stay. He’d planned to grab food and disappear before anyone could notice him or Algamus chased him out of the kitchen again with a broom. But this was Phoebe... and turning down an offer from her or saying no in general, even while she brushed past him like sunlight slipping through leaves, was something he’d never managed to be particularly good at.

"It's what I strive for," Phoebe said, meeting his half-smile with one of her own. "Sometimes happy isn't possible. But happier usually is. And progress is progress." Even if you were always going to be unhappy, it was good to have someone around who made you feel better than you did before. Phoebe personally wished that someone would bake cookies to cheer her up, and- well- maybe other people felt that way too. She was willing to bet a small bit of her time on it.
Phoebe couldn't exactly reach the high shelves, so she used her wand to levitate down the bowls that she wanted. Despite her normally frowny expression, she couldn't help but crack a smile at Nyle's pun and she even laughed a teeny tiny bit. She loved puns, ok? "Well, I trust you with flowers and flours. But it doesn't really matter if we make a mess, because we can just clean it up and try again."

"Progress is progress…" he echoed softly, allowing the nostalgic optimism to roll around on his tongue. It was a nice idea, a brilliant idea, but one he wished he felt worthy of. Especially after Phoebe's declaration of trust. Lemon juice in the eye would have been more kind.
"I wouldn't. Not after—" His throat burned with something as he swallowed, his voice wobbly around the edges. "—last year. You shouldn't, really." Nyle cleared his throat and forced himself into motion again, following her. He tried to dismiss it all with a sweep of his hand, a gesture meant to be breezy and harmless.
Instead, his fingertips caught the corner of the flour bag.
It toppled in slow, traitorous motion, flour cascading in a powdery white snow across the counter and cascading into the sticky puddle of marmalade he'd left on the floor. The mixture clung to his shoes like guilt made tangible and himself feeling uncomfortably seen by the gluey lumpy mess.
"...seems about right..."
